Horrible experience at this place. Sushi falls apart, fish didn't taste fresh. waitresses were incredibly slow. worst part is the price is way too high for the service and quality. vomited after eating here. beware. also waitress ran after me to give me coupons and demand for her tip. i would look else where for sushi. sorry

Not a fan of places that nickel and and dime you for condiments. This was the first time I was there and ordered food to go. I got two rolls. The sushi rolls were crammed into small styrofoam boxes and wasn't as enjoyable as I had hoped. I won't be back here.

I attended culinary school and AM VERY picky. Sushi Ya RVC is my favorite sushi place around. The food is worth every penny. I highly suggest a sushi ya II roll, a bob roll, a neil roll or a kellman roll. I highly suggest giving it a shot.

This is the best sushi place in RVC, period. Have been eating in Sushiya for 15 years (they used to have a smaller place in Merrick Road). The quality never change during these years. I just love the special rolls. Environment: 5 Star Sure, this is not a fancy club. no disco ball. But if you are looking for a comfortable place to spend time with your friend and family, this will be a perfect place. Service: 5 Star The waitress are nice and attentive. This is a family restaurant. Tony (the owner) does care about how customers getting treat. If he doesn't work behind the sushi bar, he always stop by and say hi to the regulars like me. Food: 5 star At the end of the day, it is the food matters most. I just LOVE those special rolls they have. My all time favorite is Kelman Roll. It has spicy tuna, crab mixed with avocado. It is covered with fresh sal. On the top, Tony put crunchy, eel sauce and special mayo.It is just so beautiful and tasty. My other recommendation includes Fancy Dragon roll and January Roll. If you are a pure sushi eater, this is the place for you. You can sit on the sushi bar and ask the chef to make you the most fresh sushi or sashimi. You don't eat raw fish like my mom. Don't need to worry about it. Sushiya has a large selection of kitchen food as well. My mom and my sister love the beef teriyaki and Seafood combo teriyaki. Price: 5 Star Among all the sushi place in the Area, Sushiya is one of most family friendly place with reasonable place. You will get every dollar worth of food. The fish is super fresh. Conclusion: As a long time RVC resident, I can tell you Sushiya is a great place to eat and spend time with family and friend. It has never disappointed me for the past 15 years.

When I first dined at this restaurant I was impressed. The sushi tasted good. The Kelman roll is delicious, there is no denying it. The sushi for three is a great treat for two hungry people. But after dining here several times we started noticing some problems. On more than one occasion the sushi tasted off. The spicy tuna rolls were fishy and left a metallic taste in my mouth. This happened every so often until we gave up and stopped dining here.

Any time I bring someone new to Sushiya, I warn them it will ruin every other Sushi place for them. They never believe me until halfway through the meal when they admit it's the best they've ever had. Everyone I've introduced to this restaurant has become a return customer. If you're a seasoned sushi eater I highly recommend Omakase (chef special) when Toniko the owner is preparing. It will knock your socks off - a whole other level!!!

The space is very small and gets very busy so if you are looking for a quiet meal or to have a private or even just pleasant conversation, this isn't the place. We ordered the pork dumplings and they were amazing. Full of flavor and well cooked. Edamame was also good but how do you mess that up? The sushi was great - super fresh and delicious. Wine selection was laughable - red or wine with no description of what kind. They also did not have a sake menu which we thought was odd. They only have regular or hot. So if you want to eat here (because the food is good), order takeout because service was just ok and they don't offer the best experience.

The sushi here is delicious. You have to go on a night it's not busy though, it can really fill up! During the week for me is the best time to go. Their spider roll is amazing. I also love their chicken terriyaki and hibachi dinners. It's hard to compete with other sushi places that have "half off sushi" specials. However, I will be back because I really enjoyed their food!

Delicious sushi here! I always order the shrimp and avocado roll and the sweet potato roll. Guy always orders the salmon don. Very friendly staff as well.

This is actually my go-to sushi place whenever I'm in Rockville Centre. I've seen them improve over the years - I've been visiting this place for 2 years now. During my experiences here, the wait staff has always been friendly to me and my friends. We received warm towels to wipe our hands on before we ate, and the wait staff made sure we were attended to. The sushi has good presentation and is very well-made. It is not the absolute BEST quality but it is much better than other sushi places that I've tried. I suggest trying the JB roll and the Eel/Avocado roll - they're fantastic! The fried ice cream is okay, I've had better. Also, skip out on the miso soup. Overall, I love this place and I go here with friends pretty often. It's worth a visit.

Sushiya is the best sushi restaurant in RvC, they have the freshest fish and the owners are very nice.

I've had my share of sushi in Long Beach, Rockville Centre, and Lynbrook... sushi ya has been consistently delicious and fresh EVERY time I order from them. For the food quality, the price point is cheap. Definitely a casual place. Service and decor is okay. Eating there is FAST, even with a group you can be in and out in under an hour. Salads, soups, appetizers come out instantly. They make your sushi in minutes. I typically feel rushed, even when you order slowly, eat slowly. 4 stars for sushi quality.

  • Donnie D.

no.... just no. the spicy tuna melted in my mouth, for all the wrong reasons... the yakisoba was some type of modified lomein with instant noodles. the quality of the fish was slightly worse than sushi buffet quality. it's like.. did they even try?

This is going to be a short & brief review.....I did not enjoy this place at all. Starting from the service to the ambiance to the food....1 star. I'm very picky when it comes to sushi, and I make it my point to order sushi (not rolls) when I go to Japanese sushi restaurants for the first time to determine whether it'll be worth a second visit. The sushi here is horrible....thick chewy slices of fish that you can barely eat in one bite. They were not fresh at all, with a bit of foul fishy smell. My BF saw the expression on my face after my first bite, and he told me to stop eating because he can tell I hated it! I really felt bad about that, but their sushi was unedible to me. Will NEVER go back.

I struggled with giving two or three stars. I settled with two for the following reasons: 1. Sushi did not taste that fresh. It was OK, but I really wasn't crazy about it. 2. The waiter seriously upsold us. Hubby and I placed our (substantial) order and the waiter then asked if we wanted to try the "very special, very fresh tuna appetizer for summer". Honestly, I had a hard time understanding the waiter, and we were wiped out from work, so we agreed to this appetizer. It wasn't very fresh or special, and was priced @ 12$. That really annoyed me, especially since we alread order 60$ worth of sushi. Wouldn't return.

I only had dinner here once, but from my experience it was reasonably priced and delicious. I ordered calamari and chicken teriyaki and loved it. My friend ordered sushi rolls, which were delicious too.

Spider roll!!! the best. those japanese low tables are pretty awesome! great experience, great service. Try it out people!!

  • Mr C.

Been back for takeout about 3-4 times since my last review. They've raised their prices a bit too much, IMO. The quality took a hit too, from what I can tell. I would really like to give them slightly less than 3 stars because I have had somewhat less than appetizing tuna from them over the past few times I went - and I paid quite a bit for it. When they're game is on, they're great, but the sushi business is a tough one to be consistently good at. I will still be visiting Sushiya, but less often due to their prices.

Decent sushi, Decent prices. Their service really won me over. My friend and I decided on Japanese for dinner tonight. As soon as we walked in we were seated. The waitress was friendly and always made herself available. We were given complementary cups of green tea, which was perfect for the cold weather. I ordered one of the specialty rolls and my friend ordered a la carte. My specialty roll was good. The portions are big so I did not finish. And the waitress asked me if I wanted to take the rest home before I could even ask. She's so sweet! The prices were decent, dinner for 2 came out to be 30ish dollars. There are plenty of dessert shops next door and down the block for some after dinner treats:)

Easily the best sushi I have ever had (and I eat a LOT of sushi). FRESH and TASTY sushi every single time. Everything on the menu is delicious, filling and reasonably priced. The servers are always friendly and attentive to their customers. Just beware - once you come here, sushi will never be the same for you again.

This is my "Go To" place for sushi in the area. Always fresh, always tasty and lots of variety. My wife and I have been going here from it's earlier Merrick Rd. location. It's a family owned establishment and they take great pride in putting out a great product. We really like the Kellman roll, Rainbow roll,RVC roll, The tuna platter appetizer. They always have something special on "The Board". If you're a sushi lover this is THE PLACE!! If not they have good non- fish dishes as well. We were there for Valentines Day and the chief made us each 2 pieces of heart shaped sushi!!! Of course it was wonderful.

Food was pretty good but service is bad...they close at 1030 during the week...I just flew home from Chicago on a delayed flight starving. I got here at 930 and was rushed to give the order and told by 950 that too made sure I don't want anything else because the kitchen will be closed...worst thing a couple came in after we ordered and ordered...even with good sushi there is other sushi places much friendlier and tasty

This is my dependable, go-to sushi place when I'm at home. I've been a loyal customer since the time when Sushi Ya was originally located on Merrick Rd (where La Bottega is now). Considering the price range, the sushi and sashimi are excellent! When it comes to maki, I challenge you to find a sushi restaurant in the area that gives you the same level of quality and quantity that Sushi Ya delivers. As far as special rolls go, I'm a huge fan of the Kelman Roll, RVC Roll, and the May Roll- definitely give them a try. For non-sushi eaters, the Chicken Yaki Soba is particularly delicious and you can never go wrong with their Chicken Teriyaki. The decor is fairly simple, nothing out of the ordinary for a Japanese restaurant. The staff at Sushi Ya is extremely cordial and friendly and though the waitresses tend to be on the soft-spoken side, they're never unwilling to provide excellent service. Definitely give Sushi Ya a try if you're in the mood for affordable, simple, Japanese fare- also great for take out!

Nice looking place, paying for parking during the day kinda sucks (thanks RVC). Sushi is good, good value. They have a wide variety of specialty rolls. Service is above average as well.

I don't know what to say because my last experience was a weird one. I've come here for years without incident. It's a great, upbeat atmosphere with good lighting and a contemporary modern feel to it. I will take this any day over the place up the block which is drab on the inside, dark and always dead. It's always busy which is a very good thing when dealing with a sushi restaurant! So yeah, anyway. Hubs and I are having a delicious dinner when suddenly he discovers something hard in his udon noodles. Upon further inspection, we reveal an actual large piece of hard, clear plastic which had obviously come from some kind of packaging. We bring it to the owners attention and at first they tried to laugh it off as if we wouldn't care and honestly, the food was so damn good, we kind of didn't? Well, they gave us some gift cards like $4 worth in total and some drinks on the house which was nice of them, but they didn't comp the dish which I think would have been the appropriate course of action. I'm sure I'll be back because of its convenient location to the movie theater and the fact that I don't really like any other restaurant on the strip and have had no problems otherwise.

If you want an HONEST REVIEW read this one! Normally i wouldn't bother writing a review for a restaurant out of the city or the areas that frequent, but I felt like I had to write a review for Sushi Ya to do it justice because I was appalled at some of these suspect reviews... First of all, by chatting with the owner who was not only friendly but so sweet and attentive, I found that there are 4 other sushi restaurants in the area which makes for pretty stiff competition. No wonder I see some negative reviews from totally unreliable Yelpers. Also, the owner informed us that he only owns ONE restaurant which is this one in Rockville Center. The other Sushi Ya's are not affiliated. To address the worm review... in the 22 years of eating fish has he EVER seen a sushi chef cut and filet the fish? There is no way a worm could've gotten in between his fish unless the worm bore into it in which the cutter would've seen the damage in the flesh that the worm caused. Sure, you can say the worm was that tiny but really? How is it that his ONE piece of fish had a worm it in? And it also coincidentally perfectly fit into his ONE piece of fish. I find that pretty hard to believe that he seemed to have missed the worm also with his one perfect bite... ummmmm what? Seems pretty suspect to me. Oh, and he has only 2 reviews and both were on the same day? Definitely suspect. Just sayin' Anyway on to the food... 4 stars for the food and 5 stars for the fish. We ordered a bunch of appetizers including the beef negimaki, fried chicken, edamame and seaweed salad. The beef negimaki and chicken were great and prepared well. Seaweed salad and edamame are pretty standard but they were good as well. Miso soup was strong and not watered down, the waitress is really Japanease and speaks fluent Japanese. She's totally sweet and our tea and water never went empty. For mains my bf and I ordered a sashimi deluxe and 2 rolls, the Susan roll and the Sushi Ya #3, sister had the sushi sashimi combo and OMG!! It was some of the best cuts of fish I've had, even better that many places in the city. Buttery cuts of fish that I swear was just plucked from the sea and for $20 a platter it was soooooo worth it. I also had a piece of uni (sea urchin) which is a huuuge sign of how fresh the fish is and it was amazing, better than that pale yellow stuff I always get in the city. This uni was great quality and bursting with the sea. I hope you guys give Sushi Ya a try, I hate it when people give BS reviews, it really hurts a business especially a neighborhood joint. I'm not from the hood but I rely on Yelpers to be honest and I hope my fellow Yelpers feel the same. :)

I found that if you are going to call in your order here just expect it to be late, incorrect and awful. Every time I order out the order has the wrong roll or it's missing half of the items. The owners are no help either. When I ask them showing how the order is wrong they laughed, have said "so?" and just shrugged me off. My friend also told me about how they ran out of tuna, so they didn't put it in his roll. After he asked where the tuna was they accused him of eating it all and wouldn't refund him. The food itself is sub par, its not perfect, nor the freshest. The one plus side is the prices are good, I guess that's how they stay in business. For myself I'll go down the block and pay an extra dollar or two for a better quality roll that comes as ordered.

rating is based on the fact that its rockville centre... not exactly a hub for great sushi. so, out of the sushi rest's i've been to around here it gets 4 stars. service is friendly and attentive. restaurant is clean and right across from the movie theater. short walk to red mango for some dessert! i'm getting older and my metabolism is not what i used to be. also, i'm allergic to exercising. sooo, i have stopped ordering rolls and stick w/sashimi or sushi by pieces. bf loves sushi rice... so, sometimes i'll get chirashi... only b/c i know that guy will finish up the rice lol. got the sashimi regular and the pieces were thick and good! its 3 pieces of each: mackerel, tuna, salmon, octopus, yellowtail it also, comes w/a bowl of rice... but, its not sushi rice. its weird... its korean rice. which i don't mind since i'm korean and love it. but, i think the bf was sad about it lol

Absolutely LOVE Sushi-Ya!!!! The food is always very good (I'll be honest though, the sushi can sometimes leave you a bit wanting if they're having a busy night) and the service is always impeccable. I've loitered in there chit-chatting with my girlfriends for literally an hour and a half after we were done eating and they NEVER make us feel rushed. Wonderful service and very cozy atmosphere. Oh and their fried green-tea ice cream? Awesome!

i always come here from brooklyn for the avocado salad with reeeally good ginger dressing, yakitori and yogurt broccoli. i do the occasional brown rice veggie/boston roll but it's really the simple kitchen food that sushi-ya does well in my book. their teriyaki dishes are also really solid, i've never eaten a whole one but i've tasted them on numerous occasions.

Best sushi for a very reasonable price that you can get. Kelman Roll and Green Dragon Roll are my favorites. Staff is polite but occasionally their lack of understanding of English can get orders mixed up. That is the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. Overall, great place.

I have tried their sushi on three occasions, and it was mediocre at best. They have a great location in rockville centre but its nothing to go out of the way for. Also, here is a review from citysearch.com that I found disturbing and wanted to share with everyone. I don't know if its true, but here it is anyway: "THEY GAVE US FOOD FROM THE GARBAGE 1 Star Rating: Not Recommended 06/17/2008 Posted by kristysica DO NOT EAT HERE!! They fed us food from the GARBAGE! I ate here one friday night with a grilfriend at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs at the bar handed us our rolls before we finished the appetizer, which was fine. So we began to eat the rolls and pushed the appetizer to the side (calamari). When we looked back the calamari was gone. The waitress had cleared the dish that we hardly ate. We politely asked where our dish went. The waitress rudely said " Oh, You weren't done!" she came back minutes later with WET COLD CALAMARI. A customer who was sitting across from the kitchen quickly sprinted to us and screamed "DO NOT EAT THAT! I SAW HER TAKE THAT OUT OF THE GARBAGE! SHE RAN WATER OVER IT AND PUT SAUCE ON TOP!'... After hearing this we got up and told the woman off, she did not even deny that she did it . Everyone in the resturant got up and walked out. THEY ARE DIGUSTING! we called board of heath. DO NOT EAT HERE"

One of the best Sushi restaurants in Long Island. I have been going to Sushi Ya for a long time and every time I discover a great new roll. For the newbies I would recommend trying the "Tony Roll" , "Kito Roll" or "Crazy Roll" They are excellent! I took a lot of my friends to Sushi Ya, especially my friends who do not eat raw fish and they ended up loving it.

Not the best sushi I've ever had but definitely the biggest table I've ever sat at to have sushi in a sushi place. Usually those places are packed and cramped (see Kotobuki). Here, you've got lots of room and pretty quick service. The sushi is fresh enough but not "tastes like you scooped it up from the ocean" fresh, the way I usually like it. Not that I like scooping stuff out of the ocean and sticking it in my mouth. I'm more of a stay on the sand and adjust my bikini kind of girl. I suppose this is now way off topic so I'll stop here.

went for lunch and definitely no complaints. 5 stars only go for dinners. great seaweed salad for under 5 bucks, large green salad under 3, and lunch specials for 10 and under. cant beat that. tuna was fresh and plentiful. rolls were awesome because they actually used the ingredients and didnt overload on the rice! yummmmm going again soon!

This place was my place for sushi take out when it was around the corner and a much much smaller location. I've eaten in their new location several times and was glad to see it hasn't changed much as far as the menu or quality is concerned. And, no, while it isn't the BEST sushi I've had, it IS still very very good and they have a fantastic variety of special rolls to choose from. They are a bit cheaper than most places, and the rolls are a bit smaller in size, which is actually nice, since I can order more rolls and have more of a variety in the same meal. I read a nightmare review two back, I've never had an experience like that when eating there. I mean, all restaurants have bad moments. But I'm definitely a fan of Sushi Ya. I see it as Taiko (around the corner) is like my best friend, and Sushi Ya is a great drinking buddy I like to hang out with here and there. Uh huh, I'm all sorts of analogy-ish today.

Okay, so I love this place. My fiance loves it too cause they have two huge ass big screen tv's and they ALWAYS are playing some sort of game on there so that's right up his alley. But the FOOD!!!! It's an orgasm in your mouth! I highly recommend the Tony Roll, I get that everytime I go. The rolls are also pretty sizeable, the price isn't bad at all. The seating is lovely. The waitstaff is also pretty cool, this group next to us brought in their own bottle of wine and the owner of the restaurant didn't beef. He charged them $5 for opening the bottle for them, but that still wasn't bad. The seating is intimate, the atmosphere is pretty sexy, and I just love sitting on the dais to the side of the restaurant. Don't blink, cause walking down the street you might not notice the restaurant. And there's a parking lot in the back so you never have to worry about that. As well as a Citibank and a shitload of other places so you can walk off that huge meal!
