This place seems promising from the outside, but do not be fooled. To start the chips were so hard it was impossible to eat them. I ordered steak tacos and had to send them back because the meat was so undercooked the corn tortilla was stained with blood. My boyfriend that usually eats two whole burritos could hardly make it through one. Lastly, our margaritas were watery and poorly made. This was the worst "Mexican" Ive had in New York. Don't waste your money. I would rather eat Chipotle.

Fantastic. Great guacamole, fun taco variations like the gringo: short ribs, cheddar and fantastic hot sauce. Also try the Day of the Dead beer from Mexico.

In the 4.5 years I've lived in Clinton Hill, this is the third restaurant to live in this space, and the first time I finally made it in to eat! Some quick facts: Hoja Santa is delicious. Hoja Santa is pricey Mexican food (something NYC loves to do). Hoja Santa is worth the price. Hoja Santa is SPICY. Makes sure to ask a lot of questions about everything, and that your waiter has a clear understanding of your spice level. The good news is if it's too spicy for you, they will fix it! We ate a wide variety of foods, some quick facts about the food: -the guacamole is delicious! if you like spicy, ask for the hot sauces. -the chips are fresh and crunchy and stand up strong to the guacamole or the pico (which was also delicious). -they will grill the fish tacos for you, and it's worth it. -the ceviche is a little too citrusy for my tastes, but otherwise fresh and refreshing. -the plantains were amazing, the sauce they put on it is FIRE but delicious. They made us a fresh batch with sauce on the side, I would dip into the sauce and then wipe most away on a napkin ... the smokey delicious flavor was worth the effort. Although I wish they had a medium version of this sauce. -my companions ate and enjoyed the Octopus, Carnitas/Short Rib/Fish-fried/fried chicken tacos. We were two couples, and us ladies ate fairly daintily, but the boys split the 4 tacos, and were extremely full and satisfied. We were all on Januapause (taking the month of January to pause from alcohol), and our server was awesome about it! Taking care to fill our water drinks often and even commenting that it was cool of us to be doing this (I thought he'd be irritated). Overall, we had a great experience here and the next time I'm craving expensive Mexican food, it's nice to know that the perfect little nugget of a spot exists right in my own neighborhood. I just hope there are enough people to support this restaurant in a neighborhood full of college kids and low-income families.

I live a block away, and this is my go to spot. Great service, all you can drink bloody Mary's and mimosas on weekends, best huevos rancheros in the neighborhood. And if that's not enough--BACON GUACAMOLE!!!

Delicious spicy margarita, friendly staff, yummy octopus appetizer, salmon was delicious and so were the ribs. Fun decor. Loved it.

Hoja Santo is a fabulous restaurant with delicious choices! Fish tacos and chicken and macaroni tacos are spectacular. The calming lighting and decor are romantic and comfortable. Great for couples, families and groups of friends. It's s nice treat to have this restaurant in the neighborhood. I love going there. Staff are friendly and overall service is super. They are very attentive and welcoming. Between the food, desserts, drinks and price for all, it's great.

I like this spot, solid margaritas, solid menu.I have never had a bad time/service here. I love tequila,I love Mexican food this place has not let me down in any aspect.

Oh for the love of G** please stop. I have lived here since the 70's And this is not a "newly thriving neighborhood" This is just a neighborhood. Hoja Santa is just yuppy chow with salsa and highly overpriced. Tacos de tofu teriyaki? ¿En serio?

I maaaaay have drank a little too much here, so by the time I left, I was quite happy with my experience. But after the alcohol-induced fog cleared, I thought twice. And I have to preface this review by saying Mexican is in my top three favorite cuisines, and it takes a lot for me to not like a Mexican place. Serve me cheese and guac and tortilla chips, and I'm a happy camper almost always. But, this place...I don't know. Bad: -The food was not bad, but not exceptional, and considering the price...it was pretty disappointing. -The price. Dinner for two came to $88 for four drinks and three small share plates. Eek! -The atmosphere was not my favorite -- really loungey with blue lights backlighting the bar, and dark. Felt more like a club than a restaurant and didn't really fit the vibe of the 'hood. -The chef forgot about one of our share plates causing us to wait an extra 20 minutes or so. Our server was super apologetic and brought over free mexican hot chocolates (which were delicious) at the end of our meal to make up for it. And I work in a restaurant kitchen, so I empathize. Sometimes you just forget...but that doesn't mean it's ok. Good: -Service was top notch! Our server, Taylor, was the sweetest guy ever. Besides bringing over the hot chocolates, he also brought over samples of hot sauce to try when I said I liked spicy food, and recommended an awesome tequila. And we just had fun talking to him. -Day of the Dead decorations. Nothing like some skulls to break up the Manhattan-club feel. -Bacon guacamole. Whoa, whoa. I would have never thought to put bacon with guac, but damn. That's what I'm doing for my next Mexican potluck for sure. Overall, I had fun, but it was because of the company and the service and the tequila -- not the food or the vibe. And unfortunately, I wouldn't go back. Sorry!

3.5 Seems like a new addition to the neighborhood. Just moved into a new apartment a block away and was with friends looking for something to do prior to NYE festivities. Hoja Santa welcomed us in from the cold and we proceeded to order many margaritas and a variety of dishes while on our way to tying up a nice buzz and filling our stomachs with beef, tortillas, and guac. Everything seemed reasonably priced and I particularly liked the Surf and Turf Sope (OXTAIL and lobster, YES). I am giving it 3 stars for now because we were already tipsy and perhaps the taste of the food was enhanced as a result. I just moved close by and predict I will be back numerous times. Expect an update.

Delicious food, great atmosphere, great service. Mexican-inspired cuisine fused with comfort food, "New American" influences, and crowd-pleasing flourishes (e.g. opportunistic uses of bacon). What a good addition to the neighborhood! Highlights of our meal: bacon guacamole, steak tacos (perfectly cooked, flavorful steak strips), and a perfect margarita (not too sweet; high-quality Tequila). Food: dishes are relatively simple, but they use fresh, top-shelf ingredients and a few well chosen flavors that make for really good eating. Drinks: huge selection of tequilas, some hard-to-find Mexican beers, some good stuff on tap (Jever!), and a list of well made tequila and rum cocktails. Service: they're psyched about their food, and it shows. Also, they were very willing to accommodate an allergy, making guac w/o onion especially for us. Ambiance: former location of ABistro; they've done some minor redecorating. Mostly it has the same feel -- exposed brick, modestly quirky decoration, etc -- that you'd expect of a hip/comfortable Brooklyn restaurant. Ate here about a week after they opened and will definitely go back. Recommend it to all you Ft. Green/Clinton Hill folks!

A great addition to the neighborhood: the food was wonderful, the service was great, and the atmosphere was comfortable. I had the tomatillo guacamole, short rib gringo tacos and a margarita. Everything tasted very fresh.

I love Hoja Santa. Even though we have other Mexican restaurants in the area, they all seem to drown their food in cheese -- not this place. The dishes are much more refined, vegetarian friendly, and so flavorful. I especially love their brussel sprout or cauliflower tacos (vegetable depends on the season), and their veggie burrito (which has beets, kale, avocado, etc -- yum!). The guacamole is a must too. They also have a great brunch with especially delicious huevos rancheros.

Best new(ish) restaurant in Ft Greene - always plenty of seats (for now) and great beers. Definitely recommend the black bean soup. Still am sad that Abistro is gone from this location though.

Stopped in two Saturdays ago. Loved the rustic, Mexican ambiance and candlelit tables. Highlights included the bacon guacamole and the jalapeno relleno (the best dish of the night). The tacos were fine...I had fish (it's battered, I should have asked first) and my partner had the pork and the fried chicken (very unique)...I thought the pork were the most flavorful. The absolute miss were the plantains (dry and tasteless). Cocktails were flavorful, but a little light on the pour for the price. Overall, it's a good addition to the Dekalb strip.

A fantastic addition to this newly thriving neighborhood, Hoja Santa is a go-to for authentic and fresh Mexican food. The tomatillo guacamole is out of this world, and a perfect starter to whet your palate! Also equally delicious are the chiles rellenos and black bean hummus. I dined with a large group of friends and family and received the same caliber of service that you'd expect to receive as a table of two. The staff is friendly and competent; the owners are down-to-earth and checked in with us several times to ensure that we were enjoying our dining experience. There's something about this level of service that makes the scratch-made food taste even better. Although it was tough to decide on an entree, I finally went with the tacos al pastor. I'm so glad I did because they were amazing! Tender, juicy, well-balanced flavors, and just the right amount of food. I'm pregnant so I wasn't able to indulge in the impressive range of tequila offerings, but my dining companions were thrilled with the informed service they received in this regard. When baby arrives, my partner and I will certainly return to partake in the hand-crafted margaritas and other cocktails made with premium tequilas that have been carefully selected by the knowledgeable staff. All in all, Hoja Santa offers a wonderful night out for friends and families alike. Highly recommended!

Solid taco place in the neighborhood. I went during happy hour, so I'm not really sure what the regular menu prices are like, but happy hour was reasonable. Great drinks. We had some Carne asada, fish, and pork tacos (maybe pibil?) between the two of us and they were all good, other than the pork being a little dry. Nothing special but all were fine. I would come back for happy hour, not sure about dinner. It's located extremely close to me, which helps. Oh- it's worth mentioning: outstanding service. That does mean something to me!

Hmm, I'm a bit conflicted about this place. Usually when I want tacos, I go to a spot on Bedford that I won't mention by name and they are fast, cheap, and tasty. This place is a sit-down restaurant, so it's understandably going to cost a bit more, but I'm not sure that the taste warranted me going here as opposed to the other place. Tacos are about on par with other taco joints. Not sure that I would go back here. I do like the outdoor seating options and the restaurant which sits a few steps below street level.

Tried to go for brunch today at a few fort Greene staples at around 12:30 and there were long waits... Decided instead to try this out and was very pleasantly surprised. I think there were only 3 tables being served and for the quality of food that was a real shame. Interior is also bright, open and eclectic enough to be interesting (without being overbearing). Had a mushroom omelette with bacon, cheddar and jalapeño and it was terrific. The torta perhaps had a little too much going on but ingredients were high quality. We will be coming back to try this for dinner... The brunch was certainly considerably better than many of the places down dekalb. Support this restaurant!!

In short: go for the guac, stay for the entrees, and watch out for the dangerously drinkable cocktails. My wife and I picked this place for a late New Year's Eve dinner. We were fans of Abistro, mourned its passing, and were intrigued by this new arrival in our neighb. We shared everything, and left stuffed. The guacamole is made to order, and it's fantastic. It's thick without being too creamy, generously garnished with small bits of chopped tomato, and with just the right about of lime. The butternut squash soup is creamy, with jalapenos hidden beneath the surface ready to surprise your taste buds. The sweetness of the soup nicely balanced the salty vinaigrette flavors of the grilled kale and escarole salad, which came with chunks of delicious chorizo. The fish tacos are battered, which usually aren't my favorite, but the slaw inside made up for it. Really quite something. Go for the appetizer size: you don't need more than two of these. We shared the "chicken cooked two ways," which consists of a breast grilled with some kind of pumpkin humous, and chopped pieces of leg and thigh meat in mole. Some of the best chicken I've had. On the drinks menu, watch out for the "White Oaxaca." It's fantastic. We'll be back.

We went to try it out based on a passerby's recommendation. We will not be returning. We waited 15 mins for someone to take our order, but I had questions. Then, we waited another 45 for our food. I had to approach a server to ask about our dinner and then was given an excuse that the kitchen was backed up and my Husbands meal took a long time to prepare. On top of that the food wasn't that good for the price, ie. $12 for 2 small steak soft tacos with hardly any flavor, $23 for "half" chicken and sautéed greens. If we had been told about the delay in the kitchen, or really had somewhat decent service I wouldn't have written this review as the food was so-so. But that on top of the long wait/slow service and high prices just make this place a complete joke! I gave it two stars because the food wasn't revolting.

  • G V.

The torta is just a hamburger patty sans the promised chorizo and $14 on top of that. There is a great place down the street with a $4 torta that resembles Mexican food. Wait staff is great though.

I had a really unique, and genuinely great meal here for lunch. I never would have thought to throw some Brussel sprouts into a taco, but you know what? It works so well! I got here just in time for happy hour and had a few deliciously crisp and hoppy Jever's. The bartender was super friendly and attentive. I'll be back to this spot anytime I want a great meal in the neighborhood.

New great spot in the neighborhood. I went for Saturday brunch and chatted with the owner as she hand made her margarita mix. She cares about what you eat in her restaurant. Everything was delicious. The tequila bar is filled with winners. You will find me sitting outside this summer after the flea market sipping on a yummy margarita.

So happy to have found a GOOD Mexican place in the area. And they deliver, which is even better. We tried the fish tacos, the sweet potato tempura tacos, and the brussel sprout tacos and they were all delicious! The tomatillo guacamole was amazing too. We'll definitely be ordering from them again and again!

First off, I don't usually like Mexican food, but I was cajoled into having dinner here and thought the food was really quite good. They also have an interesting selection of drinks. The problem is the price of the food versus the portions; I had the mushroom sope and if you removed the sauce, the $16 plate had maybe 500 calories worth of food. (My date's dinner of tacos [$20?] was larger.) You're probably not paying more for the service: Our waitress forgot our order no more than a minute after leaving the table. Otherwise, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the lighting is dim. The two of us got seated a booth towards the back (seemed like an odd choice, given just how wide the booths are; the tables are like those for a castle's dining room), but it was quieter and away from a large party.

This place is so good, worth trying it all but the margaritas and the corn on the cob are the best! Nice atmosphere, super friendly service and open late

Fort Greene has needed a Mexican restaurant (besides Pequeña) for a while. I really WANT this place to succeed. I'm giving 3 stars as a bit of tough love. They're working hard but still have to find their stride. Pros: I've ordered/dined 4 or 5 times within their first 3 months open. The food is quite good. I have yet to have a bad experience with the food. Their drinks are great and the atmosphere is warm. The staff are nice -- they once even invited me and my girlfriend to the bar for a drink on the house on a slow night. They have some unique recipes and a cool selection of Mexican beers. Cons: they seem to get a little frazzled by high volume attendance/orders. it's quite expensive. perhaps due to the complexities of opening a restaurant in a happening neighborhood at a popular, busy intersection. They should do free chips + salsa in their first year here while it feels a little overpriced. I think that if they can achieve consistent, seamless service that appears effortless to the customer, their price will be justified and they will earn their keep as a restaurant in a neighborhood full of great options.

I really like this place, the food, and the drinks and I hope it does well and gains many more fans. Happy hour, friendly staff, delicious food and drinks. Make sure to visit this place soon and give it some support so that it can stick around awhile.

Grotesquely expensive. I mean, if you're into spending $20 for 4 street tacos, go for it. I personally wish people would stop trying to make Mexican food fancy. It should never cost $10 extra to get some rice and beans, but here it does and that's just dumb.

We've been going to Hoja Santa since it opened a year ago. The food has been consistently good every time. The guacamole is always fresh - never a bad order for us. The salsas are delicious (the habanero is super super hot... but I love it!). My husband has celiac so we are limited in what we can order, but Gary, the owner, has been more than accommodating for us and most of the wait staff knows what we need and we've never had a problem. We LOVE the Veggie Burrito (and get it "deconstructed" with corn tortillas on the side). Our favorite tacos are the carnitas, short-rib gringo, brussels sprouts, fish... plus the new ones they have added (a pork one and we had a sweet potato/lentil taco that was divine). The drinks are really quite unique and delicious - our favorites are the "Fiery Scotsman", the "Spicy Gin", the margaritas (of course) and the Sangria. Additionally... we have young children and all our requests for special cups and stuff on the side are happily accommodated - it's our kids' favorite restaurant. Having been a regular for the past year... I would say that there are the occasional kinks in service - especially in the beginning or when a new server is brought on board - but the regular wait staff has been awesome to us. And I would agree that the prices are on the high side, but this is much more than a taco stand and I've learned to accept that this is the price for doing business in this neighborhood, unfortunately. The fact that the food remains consistently high quality and the owners are so nice makes me able to accept the price tag that accompanies it.

Great addition to the neighborhood! Great spot to come and just hang out at the bar for cocktails or a group of friends for dinner. Must try the spicy margarita...Brussels sprout tacos and fried chicken tacos! Delish. The tequilas are a must try! Honestly can't say one bad thing about this place, love the ambiance, decor, staff and food. A+

  • Stacey G.

So happy to have a great new Mexican place in the hood - the neighborhood has been missing this level of deliciousness since Bonita left. I definitely recommend it. I got the quesadilla with squash for brunch and it had smokey Gouda which I was unsure about after reading it on the menu but it was great - the kind of crave-able ingredient that will keep me coming back.

Over-priced for tacos and salsas. Everything tasted pretty good. Maybe the entrees are the way to go.

  • Sue Z.

Decor is adorable and the beer was great but my boyfriends steak tacos were charred and terrible. The pork and pineapple taco was much better but it was all a little pricey for what you got. I would go here for drinks and an appetizer but would skip dinner.

  • M L.

Eaten here twice. Pros: Their spicy is honestly spicey. Be careful. The salmon was delicious. Guacamole was good. Cons: way too dark, drinks were fantastic the first time inconsistent the second, food is okay not necessarily worth the price.

    (3)
  • Ames Z.

The restaurant is good. Staff is friendly. Food is average but pricey. Pricey average doesn't work for me. My fish was nicely cooked on the outside but raw on the inside... by a lot. So was my husband's. When I complained, they fried up the rest of my remaining fish and sent back to me. By then, I was not hungry for the remaining chunks. I am not sure what the problem is but there is a disconnect between what they are trying to be and how they come across. And in the end, the customer pays.

This place was open for a year before I decided to eat here. I wrote it off as another overpriced Mexican restaurant. I was so wrong! I went for the prix fixe brunch. Such a deal! I usually avoid those offerings because they're typically garbage. The cocktails are good and the breakfast burrito was big enough for two meals and so tasty! The crispy hashbrowns inside really make it. Although the food was amazing it's the coffee I can't stop thinking about. If I could I'd go there everyday just for the coffee!

  • Ian H.

First and foremost, I downloaded this app so that I could give this restaurant a 5 star rating! The service was fantastic, prompt and very very polite. Quite honestly the only aspect of this place that was better was the food itself. I came for brunch during a brisk snowy winter Sunday. We first got the bacon guacamole, nuff said. Then came some carnitas tacos, not sure if I can have them anywhere else now! The finally was the huevos rancheros, which I could finish because the portions are so generous, made the meal for me! I plan to come here all the time! Either by myself, with my boyfriend, or just collecting random people I meet on the street. I wish I could give them a 10 star rating!

This is cute place serving up Latin fare and as can be expected, margaritas in Fort Greene. Much like the other places I've yet to try, i didn't get to try the food but i can tell you about the drinks that's available. They have a well-stocked full bar although I specifically came here for margaritas during happy hour. Of course, i had to have a few just to get a good feel. They were refreshing however not otherworldly. Service is quite friendly and I'd imagine this would be a good lunch/brunch spot based on the offerings available. It was buzzing here on a Thursday evening despite the warmer weather that's arrived. Bingo on a Tuesday is advertised everywhere and I'm not quite sure what to make of this, whether it be a geriatrics night out or what not.

Went for the 2nd time on this years Cinco de Mayo. The first they were def not as busy, this time they ran out of plates and were asking us to combine or took them as soon as they became empty. Guacamole although small is delish! Salsa verde, pico de gallo and sikil pak are also fresh and delish! Chips are thicker tortillas that hold up well to any dips. Elote had super sweet corn but toppings could have been a little more flavorful. Plantains are a nice side. Tacos: Brussel sprouts is the best, short rib lacked flavor and is served in a hard taco, steak was tough and bland, fried chicken is a bit much. I would always come back for the guac and dips but prob not the tacos.

  • Grace C.

4 star level Mexican food. I am obsessed with Mexican food, and this is good but not amazing. The tacos and bacon guac and breakfast burrito are my recommendations. They also have freshly made chips. They're open to substitutions, which is nice. We enjoy the unlimited drinks brunch but wish the mimosas were less OJ.

Went there today for brunch... i had the fried chicken, mac n cheese n collard greens tacos.. they were pretty tasty... i had a mango margarita that wasnt to my luke but it was pretty strong.. it's one of those spots I could go without stepping foot in again as I wasnt really impressed.. but if you're in the area looking for moderately priced food I guess you can check them out...

Nothing like a little post-marathon brunch...even if you weren't actually running in it! I've been eyeing this spot for a while so after 6 hours of cheering/passing out water/getting drenched, a burger and a mimosa were definitely in order. I got the gringo burger and an order of chips with sikil pak, a hummus-like paste made of pumpkin seeds. Never had it or heard of it before and it was great! The gringo burger was aptly named -- thanks to the lettuce and tomato, it really did taste a lot like a taco, in a good way. It also came with a nice salad of arugula greens with a lemony dressing. The space and service were both lovely, especially given that it was prime brunch hour. We were not rushed at all and the waitress kept offering me more drinks under the impression that I went for the prix fixe because oh yeah, there's a $28 unlimited mimosa/Bloody Mary deal which I am definitely going back for. Can't wait to come back and try dinner!

Such a nice vibe and really unique, yummy cocktails. Spicy margarita and michelada are great. Also highly recommend brussels sprout tacos as a vegetarian option.

Wow, this place does some fun things with Mexican food. I strongly suggest the quesadilla (with Gouda!?!), the fish tacos, the spicy pork burrito (which is not that spicy, so ask for the house hot sauce that is absolutely delicious and ass-kicking) and definitely, definitely the guacamole. Oh, I forgot about the mighty nice margaritas... No, this ain't authentic, but it sure is creative, which keeps me coming back. Easily worth the price tag.

It's a cutest little place! The service was exceptional! Our lovely waitress was engaging, funny and suggestive. The guacamole and salsas were delicious! Grilled corn on the cob was fantastic! I got the Veggie Burrito which was huge and delightful :) Fish Tacos were yummy too. Great place!

New favorite spot to watch the World Cup! The food is amazing and the staff is super cool and efficient. We got our drinks and food quickly. The space is very cool and comfortable. We ordered a mexican cob salad thingy which was SUPER DELICIOUS and I highly recommend it. It came with chicken that was maybe the most tender and succulent chicken thigh I've ever eaten. Drinks! The drinks that we had were delicious! I had a spicy marg that was so tasty that I had to order 4! You will be happy if you go here so do yourself a favor!

They have vegetarian tacos! Which is a huge plus, however I was underwhelmed. To be fair I made veggie tacos at home all the time and have high standards for them. Also their margaritas weren't on their A game the night I went, especially for the price. However our server was very nice and the inside was fun. Plus the guac and chips were good :)

Who messes up fish tacos?... very little flavor and no texture... Horrible! The waitress acted like we were idiots when we asked things about the menu. The salsa was practically spoiled guacamole was not fresh.... hamburger big in size wimpy in flavor... this place is embarrassingly bad.

  • Eric S.

My girlfriend and I call this place tiny taco now whenever we go by it, the portions are weak and the server was incredibly rude I wanted to pull him away by his giant hipster earrings. I thought there was nothing special about this other then the guacamole and the good Mexican beers on tap, the service and portions are not good enough to keep me coming back, I will give it another shot in the future perhaps.

My folks and I LOVE Hoja Santa! We've been here several times and have yet to be disappointed. The atmosphere is always pleasant and the staff are on point. We will definitely be back for more delicious food and yummy drinks (Spiced Margaritas are AWESOME). If there was a 6th star, they would get it! YAY HOJA SANTA!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
