Arrived 10 minutes into a USA World Cup match and found a packed bar. Fortunately a few folks left around 15 minuets later and my friends and I packed in. Our bartender was Alex, who seemed to be a crowd favorite, and justifiably so: super attentive and friendly! The bar (roughly 40 feet in length!) was packed 2-3 people deep and he still found time to remember my name and check in plenty of times. Cheap pitchers of Sam Adams Summer (17$, so NY cheap, not CHEAP cheap) kept us going. More importantly this place has seasoned waffle fries, which were simply amazing. Best of all the acoustics of this place's basement digs combined with an energetic crowd led to an awesome vibe during the match. If you're looking for a friendly place to watch a game or just hang out, come here. If you are familiar with How I Met Your Mother it has a distinct MacLaren's vibe.

Stopped in for a lunch special. Ordered a chicken sandwich for $7.50. Bartender: would you like fries? Me: are they included? Her: yes. Me: okay! Get the bill. It's $10. Me: It says it's $7.50 Her: the fries are extra. Love a good bait and switch.

I tend to dole out fairly consistent 3-star reviews to pretty much all the dive bars I go to, since they're actually all the same. But in this case I feel like the ambiance and the decor was just too lackluster to be worth anything more than 2 stars. I mean, they have the usual set of beers, whiskeys, and bar food, but the basement atmosphere without any kind of redeeming quality is depressing.

First of all I love bars that are downstairs in the basement. It just seems right. You want your bar to be a little dark and questionable and walking down stairs gives you that initial feel. The bouncer is serious but I guess that's the location. Then the doors open and its a well lit (but not too much) sports bar serving delicious smelling nosh and showing the latest game of well college basketball on that Saturday night. There are quarter pool tables that you can play on and darts. A classic establishment. The music is totally random. It went from a rock song, to Boyz II Men, to some random 80's song.

Bartenders Are Awesome and They have great Drink Specials All day. They also have a lunch deal Burger , Fries and Beer for 8 bucks!

I used to live in NYC and so I used to come here to watch bears games because they had them on and like 20 people from chicago will always be there watching the game cheering or suffering depending on how the game turned out. The food is awesome. It is always very clean. I say that because not all sports bars are clean. The people are friendly. Good place to begin a Saturday Night if you are 21-29 years of age. A nice young crowd given it's proximity to NYU . This is one of my favorite bars in the whole world-just for the cool easy going attitude of the patrons and staff.

Two words: Dive Bar Went during happy hour on Saturday which ended at 10PM but as long as you gave the waiter, your order before 10PM, they'll charge you happy hour prices no matter how large your order was. Pitchers were between $10-$16 depending on the beer you wanted. TVs were scattered across the bar showing different games so there is no such thing as a commercial break. There are also 2 pool tables that only cost $1 to play so if you got a few buddies, it can be as cheap as 25 cents per person per game. Good place if you're trying to have a chill night out and is definitely a hangout spot for students from nearby NYU. It isn't too noisy so you can definite carry on conversations with your friends or... the cutie at the end of the bar. There is no dance floor so keep your dancing shoes at home and the music is based off the jukebox which is free so you can switch songs at anytime. Depending on the crowd, you may hear popular songs from your grandparents' generation or current top 40 hits

This is my favorite bar in NYC. It has such a homey feel to it, except on weekend nights when NYU takes over, but it's still cool. The drinks are great and cheap, especially during Happy hour. Best part of happy hour are the $5 wings!!!!!!! GOD, THESE WINGS ARE DELICIOUS. Alex, the bartender, is awesome and once he gets to know you he hooks you up with free shots, drinks. The jukebox has a great selection of music. Even though it might get crowded sometimes the people are still really cool. Even the bouncer is a cool ass dude. This is a bar that once you become a regular they take care of you and they actually remember you. Has two pool tables, darts, and great drink specials. To my HIMYM fans, it reminds me a lot of MacLaren's. :-) (maybe that's why I love it so much...)

  • Brian S.

Overcrowded and dirty. Terrible music every time I come here. Bouncer tried to confiscate my pals ID because he thought he was underage and tried to charge him $10 to let him in. (He's 23) Not a surprise since the bouncer is used to underage kids with no ids coming in every weekend.

  • Marina S.

A solid NYC bar. Wish I could have tried the food but the beers and atmosphere were great! Can get packed, though I'm judging based on coming when NYU was having a happy hour for their MBA students so who knows what it's like on a random weekday. I'd come back, it's super casual and roomy.

  • Krista J.

A classic bar from my NYU days that still has "it!" Josie's, as the bar is well-known throughout the city, is definitely a casual neighborhood bar where you can catch a Sunday football game, drink some inexpensive beer, and chow down on awesome waffle fries. I love it!

  • Christine L.

I came here to watch my cousin play pool and the pool tables are the 'shorter' sized tables. There are only 2. This place has a lot of seating all around, isn't terribly noisy, has a broken juke box, and charges you $2.75 for a ginger ale.

    (2)
  • Alexandra C.

I was really surprised at how empty this place was on a big Sunday game day. I think this is a "bears" bar. It's nice and spacious and the waitresses are sweet! We ended up waiting for friends for about an hour and a half, and were checked on often, but not to the point where we felt like they were annoyed we weren't ordering yet. Service was prompt. The waitress even gave my friend free fries with his wrap! Good service and very easy going. Makes you feel like home. One star off for the sad state of the ladies room.

Typical dive bar. Great music, chill scene. Delicious sex on the beach and great prices for draft beer!

    (4)
  • Yan T.

Decent dive if you like cheap beers and being left to your own devices. At first, the bar tenders couldn't care less that my friend and I were at the bar. In particular, the Latina who was there on a Monday night needs some serious attitude adjustment. But the tallish dude was cool and bought my friend a scotch after learning he'd been laid off (both are lawyers at different stages of their careers). The big Irish owner came out at one point and did the rounds. The drinks were OK but don't come here for anything fancy. Decent place to dive into for a few rounds with your buddies.

  • Thomas A.

This place brings back memories. Coming here when I was an undergrad at NYU, and now I'm back for grad school and again I crawl back to Josie Woods. It is your typical dive bar. It is downstairs so you get spotty phone service. However, how can you resist cheap drafts? They have great cheap drink specials for the block. They have space to let you shoot pool, flip cup, etc... It's a great place to hang out after classes.

    (3)
  • Alison H.

Nice little bar. Stopped in for a drink with a friend. I always heard a comotion downstairs when I walked past so I decided to check it out. Glad I did. Cheap drinks bathrooms were usable. No complaints, left a little drunk, good times.

  • Don B.

I have been to this pub a couple of times. Each time has been different but its a typical bar. The food is okay, I have had the chicken parm sandwich was okay. I have also had the burger which had a strange bun. Obviously I need to learn that this is not the place to eat but it is to drink. I went a couple of times for Barcelona soccer games and the owner was very accommodating except during football season when it becomes a fantasy football geek's dream. They have a bunch of TV's in the pub and the staff is friendly. They have a bunch of cheap beers that I had never heard of but they were pretty good. If you're in the area, stop by and have a drink.

  • Ashley J.

Cool Spot! It's more what I'm used to (being from Georgia). I'ts....NORMAL. Not some grungy dive, not trendy, it's just good. The food was cheap, not bad either, my blt and waffle fries were good, filling and only $7. They had a lot of beer on tap, and the 2 bartenders were nice. Actually...Alex I think was his name, was the most accommodating bartender I've come across. He was on his job and was genuinely nice to us. 2 pool tables, 1 dart board, and a juke box, which could use some updating... i felt like we were in the 90's all night. the only thing i'd say i didnt like was the other bartender didn't chill any shots....he wasn't busy, and being a bartender myself, I don't think you should serve tequilla hot. it's not pleasant. the other thing was a lot of guys were agressive in hitting on me....when i was obviously with a guy, I don't run in to that everywhere, so that sucked, but it's not the bars fault....just thought it might be helpful info for girls. I'll def come back here when I'm in the area and looking for a good spot to have a beer.

  • Margaret T.

I've started coming here a lot recently. The drinks are super cheap; they have a jukebox, pool tables, arcade games, and maybe darts; there's plenty of seating; the bar staff is mostly nice; and there's an interesting mix of people. By interesting, i mean eclectic. No...I mean whacked out. For example, last night, in one corner was a group of kids that looked about 14 years old, one of the girls was desperately trying to get with her obviously gay friend (you just can't wear a tanktop like that if you chow down on fish tacos); at the bar was a group of Asian dudes with long hair with one guy wearing a Flight Club varsity jacket sipping martinis; and in one of the booths was an Irish guy and a tattooed guy screaming the same 3 words at each other for 45 minutes. (oh wait, that last one was my party.) I've also eaten here and the food is pretty good as well. Waffle fries! Any place that has waffle fries is OK by me.

Is it a NYU hangout? Is it a locals bar? Is it a sports bar? Is it a dinner spot? It's all the above. Josie Woods has been a go to spot of mine for the past 4 years. It can get a little crowded when NYU's in session, but there is still plenty of elbow room to get about in. It's great for dinner, if you just want to grab wings or burgers.

  • Joanna V.

Great bar, Never had food here but it looks good. Gets packed with NYU kids starting Thursday night which can be a good thing or bad thing if you like college kids in bars. Charge a $10 cover if you're underage so keep that in mind, Bar tenders are cool and give you free drinks if they know you and if you take care of them.

Have only had drinks here. Used to come here after classes at NYU.

Yes, I went to NYU. And yea - i know that an "NYU Crowd" in Yelp-lingo is usually a negative connotation. Why all the hatred? YES - JOSIE WOODS IS SWARMING WITH NYU KIDS during the school year. It's 2 blocks away from school, how can that be helped? Still, 5+ years after graduation, I STILL like Josie Woods!!! Why do I like Josie Woods? Good service. Happy staff. Good drinks. Plenty of seating. Great drink specials ($5 pints). Pool table. Stacked juke box. Darts. They let you bring in outside food if the kitchen is closed. What can they do better? Get bigger TVs. Yay for Josie Woods!

Stopped in with a large group as part of a pub crawl. Very close to Washington Square Park and it was a nice surprise to find out that it's a basement bar, since it was over 80 degrees out and the bar was nice and cool. Friendly but slightly overworked bartenders. Lots of TVs, with a different sport on each one. Good, standard beer selection with a few interesting options (the Angry Orchard cider was a big hit). The owner, Martin, was on hand and made us feel quite welcome. Only weird thing was that there were workers continually carrying bar tables back and forth through the bar. I must have had to move five times for a guy carrying a table from one side of the bar to the other, and then another five times for another guy carrying them back the other way. We were joking that there must be a table factory in the back and they were running out of places to put them all. Not a big deal, just funny. I know we'll be back and I'm looking forward to trying the food on the next trip.

Stopped by here to catch a playoff game with a couple friends because their happy hour went til 9pm. I had Josie's Ale all night which was $3.50 each. My friend got the chicken tenders and he said they were good. i had the chicken breast sandwich with steak fries. I had to add a good amount of salt and pepper to the fries to enjoy them and the chicken sandwich was mediocre. There was a good crowd for a friday around 7ish but I felt that had mor to do with the Knicks being in the playoffs than this place really attracting people in. If I'm in the area and want to catch a game there's a good chance I might drop in here because they don't get too crowded and you could probably grab a seat at the bar. Good: Happy Hour til 9pm tv's all along the bar and seating area pool table Josie's Ale Bad: NYU crowd

A solid NYU dive bar. Seating is comfortable and good for groups. Can get pretty busy with guys taking over the pool tables. Never tried the food though. Good happy hour.

*Food/lunch review only* Been her twice now having both the burger luncheon special and the Steak wrap. Both were very filling and worth the price, though the flavors will not induce a foodgasm; however, the onion rings are notably delicious and are worth trying out this joint all on their own.

I cannot speak more highly of a pub in the city. I've been there twice now and have yet to have anything but a nice time. Most recently, I organized a birthday party there. They were helpful, friendly, understanding, and even baked a cake for the birthday boy. The service was great. I'm sure we were pretty noisy and they were wonderful despite our noise level. The food's pretty darned good, too!! I always get hot wings. Others got mozzarella sticks and burgers and reviews were positive all around. Great for a group and a laid-back good time. I'll be back.

I came here before for just an afternoon brew with a friend. It was a good experience. I came here for food on St. Patty's day. WOW- really good. I enjoyed it. I'll be back for lunch. Hmmmm.... it's an awesome place. I'm a fan. For sure. 5/5 service 5/5 for food 4/5 for price 5/5 for atmosphere A very laid-back experience.

I go here on my lunch break when I want a place that is not open to pedestrians. It's in a basement but I have to tell you the service is GREAT! The bartender is a sweetheart and the waitress always checks in on you to make sure you are good. I enjoy going there when soccer is on. They are VERY excited bunch of folks in there. The burgers and steak fries or chicken wings are to die for!!!

Hit Josie Woods again the other night and it did not disappoint! We needed a spot with an extended Happy Hour on Friday (i.e. until 8 instead of 7pm) so we ended up back at JWP. We easily found a table and each ordered a salad and split nachos. The nachos were more plain than most, but still decent. It was more like chips with beans & cheese, then guacamole, pico, and sour cream on the side, like I said they were simple, but the worked. The salads we got were way better than expected - big scrumptious cobb salads, but be sure to get the dressing on the side or else it shows up swimming in sauce. For drinks, we went for the JWP Ale to start off and then flipped to Stella. Good times. After finishing our meals we joined the crew at the bar. The bar tender was excellent! He quickly took care of us and event stored our coats behind the bar without being asked. In summary, the crowd was great. The tunes, though from a juke box, were bumping. The bartenders were excellent. The food was better than expected and wasn't too expensive. NYU kids, stay away from this place. It's too cool for you!

  • Hank C.

An underground bar that you wander down into, forget it if you can't make it down stairs. The stairs even overarch on the walkway - bow down in order to walk from each side of the bar to the other means you have to be careful... pool tables on one side, and barely enough space to have one, much less the two they have. Seating on the other side... service can be slow, especially when the place is packed. Relatively cheap college bar, they do deals for groups.

  • Marley N.

Meh...their drink selection was fine, I guess, but I got shoved too often. The DJ was good, but I really would have preferred never coming here.

I've been coming here for years (usually to meet friends at NYU) and I have to say Josie Wood's Pub is pretty solid. They have decent prices, good food and pretty attentive service. Bonus points for pool tables and an internet jukebox. That said, it's not THAT cheap. And the waitstaff can forget about you... but they're always super nice. Josie Wood's is a 3 star oasis a mostly 2 star area.

    (3)
  • Tasha R.

Josie Woods is a pretty cool spot. They have pool tables and a dart board. The bartenders are pretty cool and mix a good drink. It's a nice spot to go after work. I have had birthday gatherings here and they were very accommodating.

For an NYU bar, not bad! My younger self steered clear of this area due to the thronging student hordes. There's something about NYU people in the Village--or Hopkins people in Baltimore--that's irritating at best. It stimulates the locals to accentuate their distance from them, to set themselves apart, to distinguish their city savvy from the questionable taste of a transient population. But now, I must reluctantly admit that I have become an NYU person (albeit with a good decade on the most egregious violators). And, as part and parcel of being an NYU person, occasionally I indulge in pub night with my classmates. At that time, *we* are the transients with questionable taste, clogging up the bars and being loud and insular. And if I have to pick a place to head with classmates after lecture, Josie Woods is a top bet. Maker's Mark is cheap. The burger's nothing to write home about (and I'll probably not order it again), but bourbon is really what I need to wash away my shame at becoming the privileged tipsy gownie among townies that I had disdained.

    A. Packed B. Beers are cheap C. Drunk is a default state every visit D. Good for warm up/happy hour and end of eve/pre-coma E. Patrons vary and I don't remember having a bad time (although I don't remember much when I'm leaving that spot) I will hit again.

    (3)
  • Dave C.

I went here after class one day with some friends from NYU. It is a pretty standard bar with a bunch of beers and TVs / pool tables. The one major down side is that the bar is down in the basement. During this winter this would be cool but when we went it was a nice spring day. That kinda sucked because we weren't able to enjoy the day but the place was pretty standard. If it is rainy day or cold out, this place would be perfect. But, on a nice day, you can do better.

    (3)
  • Steve A.

Why don't more dive bars have booths? Josie's takes the experience of meeting up with a bunch of friends late night at an Applebees and transports it into a basement bar experience. There have been many times when I'm in the area during the week and I've been with people that to talk, drink, and eat some bar food...Josie's always delivers. There are even pool tables and a juke box (though the speakers are oddly placed so depending where you sit you might not hear your selections). Games are always on and college rats are a plenty.

    (3)
  • Paul J.

Best basement ever. No windows or clocks that I'm aware of so you may stay later than you think. Real people, real staff including Alex who humbly whooped my butt in pool. Great drinks and bar food including cheezy waffle fries. I'd compare it to a DT Mpls Grumpy's. Lots of room and flat out cool, non-pretentious people. I'll definitely be back for my next NY visit.

World traveler top three favorite bars I have been to, take care of the bar tenders they will take care of you. You won't be able to leave if you want to.

I set-up two junior-high reunions (I know I know, who the fuck does that - but 14 years has to count for something). 20+ people and we all decide to do shots (actually, I was the one who initiated). I think I even thought I was going to pay for it all. scary. So us having already been there for an hr or two, and me being familiar with the kick-ass bartenders, I order the shots and what do I know, "This round is on me guys." Damn man, 20+ shots (actually, I think it was more like 16 because some folk were driving) but still, how accomodating is that. This is exactly why I love this place. I always seem to manage to stop by when it's not so busy, just to sober up a bit with a maker's on the rocks (hmmmm) and get in a few games of pool. You also meet the most interesting of people here. I haven't encountered the bum-rush of NYU kids but if I do, I'll just tell them I'm a leper and they'll leave me be. Get their nachos and chat up the bartenders. They're cool peoples. And if you ever see me, you can tell your friends I'm president of a leper colony.

The bartenders are really nice and friendly. A great place to go if you are looking to sit a the bar without bumping into a ton of people. Cheap beer, the food is good, the music is good and best of all they have a dart board and two pool tables! My friends and I make this a regular stop when we can't think of anywhere else to go :)

    (4)
  • Johnny A.

Yeah okay-- two pool tables (clearly patroned by people who would get SCHOOLED by this yelping shark) which are set apart from the bar. Not crowded on a friday night (clearly the over 21 nyu crowd picks elsewhere) but the drinks were relatively cheap. Lots of beers on tap. My cohort for grad school went here for drinks to get more acquainted with each other (ie. talk shop and trade notes about professors and programs)-- and there were about 11 of us. The service was great, quick, and friendly! Definitely a place I would recommend for large groups from nyu-- better than the service at DOJO.

  • Sean M.

Amazing place to come grab some good food, cheap beer and watch a game. They have most major sporting packages so come a chill out. Beware on Sunday there is a group that plays dungeons and dragons in the corner. They are quiet but they take up a lot of room.

    (5)
  • Adam M.

4.5 stars I like this place a lot. After class gets out at nyu across the street around 8:30, I still have 30 minutes to slip in and take advantage of happy hour pricing. Good beer and food and prices even non happy hour time. Downstairs, air continued, plenty of room and TVs. Friendly staff. I love it.

Your basic dive bar....pool tables, electronic jukebox, somewhat crowded & lots of fun. Don't come here if you are looking for hipster night life, this is a down-to-earth place where they sell Miller Lite. xo

  • Mark L.

Josie woods was the place to go when you went to NYU, the reason being they didn't card you if you were under 21. Now that I've grown older and wiser I have realized that going downstairs to play pool amongst a group of people who have never seen daylight is no longer cool. I was hear one new year's eve and my friend had to go to the bathroom he decided to leave the bar and go home rather than use the one at Josey's. Now I'm not the one to choose a place based on its bathroom but they have a toilet in the middle of the bar. By that I mean the entire place looks like it's made to receive excrement. The girls that frequent this place are okay and by that I mean if they walked outside in sunlight they would melt and pool near a sewer grate.

    (1)
  • Phil H.

Oh, Josie's. As an NYU grad, been going here for years and always end up going back from time-to-time. Standard beers and standard prices in a cozy underground bar with two pool tables and a lot of seating. Have tried different menu items over the years and have been pleasantly surprised, so a good stop for lunch if you're in the neighborhood. Can't give it particularly high marks, but I'm sure I'll be going for years to come.

Hey, Josie Woods? Do you remember that night when my friends invited the annoying girl out? Remember how I got drunk and asked for one of her chicken fingers and then threw it on the floor and laughed? That was a pretty good dick move, right? Wait, you don't remember? Fuck you then.

    (2)
  • Marcus D.

This place wasn't horrible, I just forgot I was here last night (which should tell you something and I wasn't drunk - well, not VERY drunk). There were some girls we were harrassing. I remember chants of "white skirt." There was also a bride-to-be (Jackie?), who we managed to frighten, and one of her bridesmaids, some broad from Ireland (Co. Kildare) that had on a Red Sox hat, yet she couldn't fathom why being from Boston I wasn't too shocked by it - I told her that Boston has more Irish people than Ireland and she couldn't fathom that, either. Other than that, would I want to come back here? Probably not....

  • Steele F.

This is a "bar". What do I mean by that? There's no pretense, no show. Just a place to go to knock back a few with friends or watch a game. BEER SELECTION: About a dozen standard/above-standard brews (Bud, Coors, Blue Moon, Guinness) FOOD: Typical pub fair, but always strong stuff. SERVICE: Great. Quick, efficient, and a good table always gets free drinks. It DOES get packed with NYU students during the college season (particularly during weekends), but the sports deals they do are great, the happy hour is okay, and the pool/darts tables are always there for amusement. Like I said, a great bar for those looking for a place to grab a quick drink. Walk on down the stairs; it's always a good time.

u have to be in the right mood for it - when u r in that mood, this place is great! it's nothing fancy, but not like sketchy dives either... i feel like im hanging out at a frat basement - energetic and fun at times, laid back and easy at others. i guess ppl wouldnt come here primarily for the dining experience, but the food is actually pretty great too.

Place is alright. Stopped in here for shelter from the pouring rain. It was empty. Cheap beers. It's just too damn bright in here and maybe better song selections next time?

Big fat juicy steak fries! Big fat juicy steak fries! Big fat juicy steak fries! Big fat juicy steak fries! me love potato! Walk down a flight of steps and you'll find yourself in an airy pine wood panelled bar. On a Friday afternoon it wasn't busy, so we were able to grab a booth. Service was quick, one philly cheesesteak (yum) with lots of steak fries and one humongous French onion soup. No frills, no fuss, attentive service. Would have given it more stars but had to yell over music.

Josie woods, to me, is nothing more than a practical venue... The drinks are cheap, the staff are friendly. I come here for ameetup about once a month. I am told, though i am not sure i agree, that the wings are the best in the city... a tough call, if you ask me. Anyways. Its worth a look if you would like to have a friendly get together. the pool tables and dart boards add to the pub atmosphere. Enough said.

  • Pat S.

Mike D. is a hater. I'm older now, and the last time I went to this bar I felt about 97 years old, but I loved it back in the day and have many Josie Woods memories. So I'll write this from my 22-year-old self's point of view: There really isn't anything you need at a regular-hangout bar that isn't here. TVs to watch sports, pool tables that have people playing but rarely much of a wait, a dartboard, reasonably priced drinks (especially Yuengling - hell yeah), and an Irish theme. The food is decent; I wouldn't exactly come here to eat, but it's OK for a bar. Plus, there are hot college chicks everywhere during the school year. A definite five stars.

This place has a warm feel and plenty of T.V's and 2 pool tables. Try their signature ale.

It is a nice low key bar with a friendly staff. I also really like the set up and vibe of the place. They also have a pretty decent bar so I was happy with the selection. I would recommend it to friends.

I love this place. If you are looking for a scene...go to the Meatpacking District...and stay there. They have pitchers of Bud and Bud Light for $13 (I believe). Two pool tables that only cost $1. They have all of the sports packages so every sporting event that you could ever want to see is on TV and they will gladly put on whatever you would like to see if you ask. It is a classic NY pub. On Thursday-Saturday it can get overrun with NYU students, but it rarely gets unbearable. There are usually a manageable amount of people there. I highly recommend it for NFL Sundays because they have awesome bar food. The wings are great. The chicken tenders are the biggest I've ever seen. Go to Josies, but if you're a douche I will tell Mundo to kick you out.

why would you ever bring a date here? why? why would you ever take a girl to dine here? why? why are you coming here... yet NOT a NYU student? why? why did you admit to bringing past dates here? why? back in october 2008: honestly, Josie Woods isn't horrible. it's actually nicer than i would have imagined it to be... being that you are walking downstairs and afraid your date is taking you to a sketchy bar. it's spacious, not-too-loud and the bartenders are quite nice and entertaining. the chicken cordon bleu was actually good. - my date asked me if i'd like to share it with him. WHAT!?!?! the bathroom is kind of scary. - my date asked me if i'd like him to be in there with me. WHAT!?!?! what a nightmare of a date. kudos to Jose Woods Pub to have futbol playing on the tube. it saved my sanity. end result: i do not speak to this person any longer. i have told him to lose my number.

I heard Josie Woods was a good place for Sunday football games, so I came here with a few friends. I HEARD WRONG. There is absolutely no draw to coming here to watch sporting events. There are a few flat panels, but the technology is awful. Not only was there an obnoxious delay on the volume, but the staff had no clue how to change the channels. The bar was 2/3 filled with Bears fans waiting for the game to be turned on, and it took 30 minutes to get it on after the end of the previous game. It was finally on with 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter...awesome. We stuck around anyway to finish out the game, and were only more disappointed in the food and service. The food was terrible and overpriced for a crappy hole-in-the-wall underground bar. $10 "special" for some unappetizing sandwiches. The wings were dried out and disgusting, and the burgers were pre-made-looking. BUT NOTHING IS WORSE THAN THE SERVICE. The bar was not very crowded during Sunday football (apparently because most people knew to stay away) yet the waitress still managed to screw everything up. She couldn't understand anything we ordered and acted like it was our fault that she didn't understand. She even brought us the wrong beer - I'm sorry, but how hard is it to tell the difference between dark brew and light?! When we tried to ask her to fix it, she grabbed it angrily and brought us a new one FILLED WITH FOAM. I'm usually forgiving of bad service if the server is nice about it - but there's no excuse for such a crappy attitude. Now I know why Bears fans usually end up at Gael Pub.

3 Dollar pints of Sam Adams, cheap wings and kick azz chili cheese fries......yea you bitches know how I roll and JW is my kinda joint! Its a great place for cold draft beer and awesome bar grub. They even have a great jukebox , pool, and darts. The only thing that could make this place better would be a stripper pole

Dirty and stereotypical. Underage kids but pretty good ale. A staple for every NYU kid who needs a good bar story or two.

you have an hour in between classes. where do us hotelies go? josies of course. a quasi-tradition, the hospitality kiddos frequent the happy hour before another boring 3 hours of class. always makes it better. this place is exactly that you would think a bar is. its as if all the bars in movies and tv shows were modeled after josies. it has a decent selection of drafts, a decent happy hour, pool tables, and the dark, oak-y feel. come to watch the game and chow down on calamari sorry for throwing up in your urinal.

Josie Woods is my home away from home. I play weekly pool league out of Josies (taking a break for the year for law school in Boston but back in the summer!) and I honestly have not found any place that compares to Josie's. As soon as you walk in, you're family. If you don't want the underaged NYU clientele, then going on any day during the week or earlier on a weekend night is what you have to do. But after Vinny starts making you drinks, you might end up staying! The staff are some of the best people I've ever met and I can call every single one of them a friend of mine. If you don't want to get hit on by the old men, then avoid both extreme ends of the bar. They're honestly harmless and are regulars.. most of them I know too. (They actually really just like chatting and playing pool!) The food is INCREDIBLE (try the Chicken Swiss sandwich, or the Caesar salad, or the hamburger/turkey burger! The hardest choice to make is whether or not to have steak or waffle fries) and is reasonably priced for NYC and for the portion you get. Drink prices are also reasonable, especially since the staff is apt to give a lot of drinks on the house. One of the main reasons I'm so excited to get back to NYC is to come back to my home away from home! If you see the girl at the pool tables with the purple pool stick, come say hi to me! EDIT: The jukebox has every song imaginable, and Josies is separated by dining area, general bar area and the pool area, where you find most of the sports nuts, so it's easy to both avoid people and converse with people at the same time. They just added about 10-15 new flat screen TVs and play any sports game requested. Though Vinny, a Yankees fan, might look at you crazy if you want the Red Sox and Josh, a Mets fan, might look at you crazy if you want the Braves. I've had the best times on weekend afternoons when I was stopping in for some lunch/pool and ended up saying to talk with my bartender friends until they changed shifts... at 7PM. Sometimes, you might even find the owner Martin behind the bar serving drinks himself! Make sure you tell him you want him to start selling his Irish cheese potato chips. Unfortunately, be sure to avoid at all costs when there's an NYU party. I went to NYU and still couldn't stand the NYU parties. It's the only time I tell my home away from home "See ya!" If you end up going, tell them Morgan (on pool league) recommended you and I guarantee you will get the best service!

Josie Woods, i can understand slow service when all your tables are full and you only have two waitstaff on the floor, but if I have to wait for my food, I'd expect the food made-to-order. Why did all the burgers on the table appear well-done despite requests for medium and medium rare? How did the nachos and quesadilla end up taking 15 minutes longer than the burgers to appear on the table? Aren't they all but premade? Oh Josie, no offense, but I don't think there will be a next time.

We went here to watch NFL games because they have the NFL ticket, and only require a $15 per head bill to stay at a table for hours. The food is terrible. Everything tastes as if it was straight from a freezer bag of bulk produced frozen food. Each item we ordered was worse than the one before it. There is no flavor, no texture, and nothing special whatsoever about the food. Every time I go, I just drink $15 of beers to make sure I cover my NFL ticket minimum bill, and steer far away from any of the food.

Hate for my first review to be this place, but this bar is awful. Came here with Pam Z. for the Bears game and the waitress was godawful. The manager was nice, but he's not the one taking your order. Maybe they should reevaluate their staff if they don't want to drive everyone away. No one around me seemed happy with the service. In fact, one guy behind me asked when the Bears game would be on, and the waitress actually raised her voice and told him very rudely that he'd just have to wait.

The buffalo wings here are some of the best in the area. They are tangy and spicy, with sauce that is evident without being messy. That you can order waffle fries makes the place even better. Also, while the happy hour specials seem targeted to their college student customer base, they still make it worthwhile for the after-work crowd. To bring the joint into the modern century, the pool table competes with guitar hero for attention. I'm pretty sure the pool table still wins, most evenings.

"I mean, it's a burger, right? heh heh..." Don't embarrass yourself by bringing people here to eat a burger. Maybe that's harsh. I mean there's just nothing to it. Standard bar burg at a new york price. Bored service, lame sports bar.

I came here last month after a 10 year hiatus (when it was Boo Radley's). God, was I really as obnoxious as the NYU students in there? Unfortunately probably worse. Lots of great memories of this place . . . losing EVERY friggin game of pool, listening to Bittersweet Symphony every other song on the juke box, drinking Heinekens in my pajamas, and that's just the stuff I remember.

You can come here for any reason. My usual one is that I work nearby, and I love coming here afterwards. And quite as frequently as I can. I wouldn't bring a date here, unless it was a small group outing. But the price of beer and shots aren't bad. Staff is pretty good. THere's a dart board I like to hit up too. But it's practically home.

The Good: extended happy hour (to 9pm) with $3.50-$4.50 pints depending on your beer of choice; after 9 a nightly $4 pint special. Decent, certainly not spectacular, food for a good price. Cavernous, plenty of seating on a Thursday night. Plenty of entertainment: pool tables, decent music, good people watching. Bar tenders are friendly, and like to joke around with the customers they know. The Less Good: lots of (legal?) NYU students can get loud, but also part of the charm of a student joint. Hard to find, but not if you're looking for it. Service is good, until some regulars show up. The Great: Sports, and not just any sports, but hockey. Lots of it. The staff/owner must love hockey b/c they'll put ANY game on if you ask. Plus they have enough TVs for hoops, baseball, and whatever else you ask for.

I went here on Saturday night and the place was pretty much dead. There were darts and pool tables and pitchers of beer for $10. The jukebox was playing 90's music and random eclectic hits. Considering it's in the heart of NYU hell, I really have no complaint about this place.

  • Tiffany T.

3 dollar yuegling pints doesn't sound so bad to me. Great turkey burgers. It's a dive, it's half nyu kids, half older neighborhood people...Cheap beer, 2 pool tables, friendly staff..it's good for a casual night out or pregaming beforehand.

This is like NYU's official bar, so avoid it if you don't like college kids or frat boys. Love the cheese fries.

The former "NYU bar," has been on the decline ever since NYC really started cracking down on underage drinking and ID's. The last time I came here, it was near dead and I don't see things getting any better for the place. But if its anything, they've got a great jukebox, pool tables and darts---things all great spots need, so who knows maybe Josie Wood's is due for a comeback?

There is no better place to eat wings, drink beer and watch football (especially the Chicago Bears). The service is great and the bartenders and servers are very friendly.

It's the summertime, so I can't tell what it's like when NYU is in session, but I can imagine. It's looks like a great place for underaged horny frat boys to hang out, or at least designed by a few. The food is medicore. The only good thing about this place is that it has two cool pool tables, and cheap 10 dollar pitchers of beer.

I heart Josie Woods. Kick ass bar food, great bartenders, wait-staff and bar-backs and a fun and diverse jukebox! A great place to stop by after class, play some pool, some darts or just hang out at one of the many tables and discuss existentialist films. Sure sometimes you get the annoying NYU undergrads, but overall you're bound to have a good time. Yay for Josies.

When I was a freshman at NYU this was THE bar, right around the corner, certain nights they'd let anyone in. I've only been back a couple times since the first two years of college, and there's nothing wrong with the bar or the space really. The bouncers and bartenders are congenial; the problem is there's a cover sometimes because the NYU frats host parties, its usually nothing more than 10 bucks. There are plenty of other good bars if you're actually over 21 to go to: you'll see less popped collars and more people who can actually hold their liquor/conversation. The thing about this bar is the crowd. If you're under 21, its fine, there's the certain novelty of being able to get into a bar. For everyone else, well, the novelty wears off. I've had the food during the day, it isn't half bad, cheap enough.

awww man i hate giving one star, but really this place kind of sucked. you have to know where you're going to find this place because there were no other bars/restaurants/people in the general vicinity, and frankly, i felt as if i had stumbled upon this hidden oasis, which was in reality only a mirage. hmm. i like that analogy. note to self: must use that analogy again. anyways, my friends and i may have gone on an off night, but it was dead dead dead and the people who were there were just sitting around and people watching the other folks in the bar. josie's is definitely not the place to go if you want to keep the party going.

    (1)
  • Tina S.

mm hmm. it doesn't get any better than this. like tara s. says, being ogled like i'm in a porno is just about the main reason i frequent this fine establishment. the other reasons being: the best f'ing wings on the planet. cheap beer. no cell-phone reception (a true rarity in the city). the best bartenders on earth. oh yes, and, they will always play the chargers games for this tru cali girl. anything less would be uncivilized.

Perfect, perfect I say for some good Sunday football watching! $11 pitchers, 35cent wings, TV screens everywhere you look, every game you want to watch with the surround sound blasting--it definitely doesn't get better than this. Actually, any major sporting event--this is the place to be. Located downstairs off one of the streets on NYU's "campus" be prepared not to have cell-phone reception for the many hours you lose yourself in here. The bartenders are funny, attentive, and personable. There's a quality high-tech jukebox for non-sports watching moments. There are wooden tables and booths as well as a raging fireplace in the winter time that also make for a nice "quiet" drinking & dining evening catching up with friends. The menu ranges anywhere from your typical bar food (nachos, mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, potato skins, quesadillas, etc) to soups, salads, sandwiches, fish-n-chips and other serious entrees. My personal favorites include the poppers, wings, quesadillas, and fajitas, and the waffle fries (AMAZING!). There are two pool tables and some arcade games in addition. Note however, if you're not a big fan of mass-assembled drunk NYU undergrads stay away and/or wear protective armour if going on a Thursday--Saturday evening.

This bar is pretty terrible. Even if you are underage and looking for someplace to hang out, you can do better. The drinks are expensive and the amount of older guys hitting on girls that can't be older than 18 is just creepy.

    (1)
  • Tara S.

Probably the worst bar I've ever been to, but NYU youngsters and guys huntin' illegal tail seem to love it here. But for anyone with an ounce of class or the desire to not be ogled like you're in a porno, go somewhere else.

    (1)
  • Andrew J.

This is one of the better places to watch football in the city. They've got enough tv's for every game. Mostly flat screens. Good burgers. Cheap wings. Cheap beer. It's usually not too crowded... just avoid friday and saturday nights if you don't want to hang with the NYU undergrad crowd!

    (4)
  • Emmy F.

expensive drinks and an underaged NYU freshman clientele with the occasional clueless Jersey clique strewn about. if you're into that kinda stuff, this is the place for you. if not, there's about a hundred other places to get a good beer or gin and tonic within a 5-block radius.
