Average. Not bad for upstate - and the price has to be good - but here for a wedding reception and its just average. Sirloin was ok. Service was good. Open bar good - but no shots. Wine selection decent. The lobster risotto balls were good. It came out only once. The potato cakes (aka hashbrowns) were bland. The venue is also bland. The DJ is cheesy. The rolls were not good and the salad was average. Thankfully the bar is playing the final four - albeit on mute - so I don't have to keep looking at my smart phone but have a real life escape. Ok that was harsh and meant for dramatic effect...

Wonderful Easter brunch. They did a wonderful job with the selection of foods. From omlettes, to roast beef, turkey and ham. As a bariatric surgery patient I was happy to see salmon and quinoa along side rice and potatoes. The salmon was nicely cooked, not fishy at all. The quinoa was tender and nutty. Green beans and carrots were cooked perfectly. I was also happy with the selection of sugar-free desserts though the cupcake was quite dry. I would have liked to see a little kore imagination when it came to the sugar-free desserts, like a fruited cheesecake or sugar-free fruit tarts. All in all, a very nice dinner. expect it to be a bit pricey though. About $250 for 5 people, including wine.

Our organization had a dinner meeting in one of the ballrooms at Century House last night. I cannot begin to tell you what a major disappointment it was. First of all, the room was not properly staffed. There was no one tending the bar. When I asked why not, I was told that they were short staffed that night. To have to tell 60+ people to go to their main bar was ridiculous, and doing so was a fiasco. The place has a very busy bar area (singles scene), and I could not get anyone to take my order for a glass of wine within a reasonable amount of time. So, I left ... empty handed. They lost a lot of revenue from our group because of this situation. Then there was the problem with the food, itself. The lady sitting next to me (one of our evening's sponsors) was not served with everyone else. And when I finally brought it to the wait staff's attention 20 minutes later, it took another 30 minutes for them to bring her salmon ... after I had to ask them a second time. Salmon does not take 30 minutes to prepare. My chicken entree was dry as a bone, like cardboard, overcooked so badly that it was impossible to swallow. I could not eat most of it. During the meal, trying to get a refill on my water was also challenge. Ditto for getting a cup of coffee. They were clearly not on the ball, and I doubt we will have another event there in the future.

My family and I have been coming here for years and we absolutely love it here. They never disappoint. They make fantastic soups. The three onion soup is their version of French onion and it's by far my favorite. They always have a soup of the day which often gives good competition to the three onion. They always have new and tasty specials. Definitely save room for dessert! I've tried several different desserts over time and all have been delicious. My favorite by far is the Grand Finale. It's "house made double chocolate brownie base, three scoops of vanilla bean ice cream, caramel sauce, milk chocolate sauce, crème Anglaise, topped with cookie crumble." How can you pass that up?!

The food was quite good but very expensive. More expensive than it was worth. The ambiance is very, very nice. My pot of seafood tasted good...not great. In truth, I make it better at home. My expensive pot O' seafood came with a piece of bread... no soup or salad. Our server asked if I wanted to add soup or salad to it and I didn't... couldn't believe it wasn't included. Also my pot of mussels, clams, fish, shrimp and lobster came in a red sauce with nothing else. Some rice or pasta would have gone quite well! My husband had a surf and turf, which at least came with potato and veg... but no soup or salad for him either. =( . I won't be back.

Prime rib had solid flavor, beer cheese soup was tasty, very good meal all around. Good seasonal beer selection, I was staying at the hotel on a work trip and was more then happy to find they had a steak house attached, I ordered the prime rib in fear, but the bartender promised me their prime rib was very flavorful and it was. Would recommend and come back in the future.

Probably should not have been surprised at how busy The Century House was on a Friday night about 8 pm, but when we saw all the cars outside, all the bar seats taken, and possibly a full dining room, we asked the hostess how long of a wait for a table for two. She cheerfully surprised us by saying she could seat us right away. Wonderful! We started with a couple pints of beer ($5/ 16 oz.) since they offer a decent selection of craft choices. A Bear Naked Ale from Adirondack Brewery and a Brown Ale from Brown's Brewing were great choices to accompany our meal. Looking at the Tavern Favorites and Small Plates Menu, we shared an appetizer of Falafel ($7.95), I believe there were 5 in the serving. They came out quickly from the kitchen, were nice and hot, crispy on the outside and not greasy. But there was not a lot of flavor to them. They were better when we dipped them in the tzatziki sauce. My wife had Steak Frites ($16.95) - a bistro steak (London Broil) with a Bordelaise sauce and steak frites. The steak was more tender than we expected and properly cooked to the requested medium-rare. More on the steak frites a bit latter. I ordered the Beef Short Rib Slider ($10.95) - tender, juicy, and flavorful short rib meat with roasted garlic aioli on two fresh slider rolls, fieldgreens, and French fries. Now you may ask if there was a difference between my wife's steak frites and my French fries. Well, they tasted the same, but hers were longer than mine (see pictures). At least this let me know that they were freshly cut in-house and not frozen. We finished off sharing some Maple Caramel Gelato ($7) that was really rich and creamy, YUM! And I can't overlook the excellent Coffee ($2.25/cup) - truly, a very rich and flavorful coffee, worth coming here just for that. I don't know if the price included refills. They mention on the menu that it is a fair trade organic coffee blended just for them and roasted on site. It's even available for purchase to take home (7.5 oz. package $7.95). Our server, Mary B. was efficient, friendly and helpful. As busy as the restaurant was, she timed the delivery of our courses perfectly and answered all our questions. We really need to return here more frequently. The atmosphere is also very inviting with its early American look and fireplace.

Update 6/8/14 prime rib Ordered mid rare prime rib. This time it was not cooked as I wanted. Was more mid-well. Quality has definitely taken a plunge. :( sorry century house, but consistency would be nice. 3/5 stars this time around

The first time we went here the food was wonderful and the service exceptional hence the return trip. On our second trip we were not as fortunate, our mere presence seemed to be bothering our waitress we were left waiting for menus then left waiting again for drink orders and after a considerable amount of time we were finally asked for our order. The prime rib which is what had us coming back for more came out way over done not the medium rare it should have been. The mashed potatoes were a small dollop on the plate and that dense piece of bread could hardly be called a popover. The cup of coffee at the end however outstanding. Our waitress was non-existent for us and everyone in our party had the same impression that she was focused on her "regulars" and didn't want to be bothered with us a shame for her as we are frequently in the area and will come back but will be sure to request not to be seated in her area again.

The dinning room is dark and pleasant revolutionary war era decor. Great waiter Gordon, who not only was knowledgeable and pleasant but even sang a show tune for my and another dinners birthday! He recommended the lobster Mac and cheese which was fabulous-the best I've ever had served hot in a pewter bowl. I had the special which was veal oscar. Nice presentation, temperature perfect, the oscar was Lobster instead of the typical crab! The veal was a bit tough and slightly breaded. Potatoes were ok, asparagus delicious they used both a hollandaise and bernaise sauce. My companion had steak and scallops. Scallops were perfectly done and tasty. Steak was a filet and done perfectly as well. Served with broccoli rabe which was tasty. We took dessert to go as we did not have time.i have attended brunches here but will def be back for dinner!!

This is probably one of the better restaurants in Latham but that doesn't say much. It is fairly pricey for semi-casual dining. I usually end up getting some kind of seafood because it is fresh and cooked well which is hard to come by in this area. The lobster chowder may carry a hefty price tag but it is rich and comes with a full claw on top of the meat in the actual soup. I think the recipe is a little different than it used to be though. It was more of a bisque in the past. The Light House Shore dinner is a favorite of mine. It comes with 3 scallops, 2 stuffed shrimp, a lobster claw and half a tail, as well as mashed potatoes and vegetables. I'm not a huge fan of scallops in general but they cook them just right here. The mashed potatoes are seasoned well and the vegetables are always cooked nice and firm. For dessert I was disappointed to hear that they no longer get their cheesecake from Carnegie Deli. But they have replaced it with a comparable substitute from New Skete. The Brunches and Special Parties never really live up to the actual restaurant quality so I wouldn't recommend them.

I love the feel of the century house. The food and servers were great. The cheese plate was better than most. I enjoyed my sea bass and my boyfriend really enjoyed his dessert. Our table was seated next to the door by the ball room which wouldn't be bad but because of so much traffic it was awfully cold in the winter. Still, worth being chilly for.

Ok I'm not sure what to give this place as a star rating but based on my experience I'm going to go with 4 stars. We bought a living social deal that came with 2 martinis an appetizer 2 entrees and dessert to share. We made a reservation for a Tuesday night thinking we there would be no crowd so easy In and easy out. Not the case. We had reservations for 615 and we order pretty much right away and we didn't get our entrees till 730. When we got our entrees I got ny strip and my wife got a chicken dish. Her chicken dish was cooked on the outside but raw on the inside. We sent it back to the kitchen and they brought over some filet appetizer to be nice and it was delicious. They cooked us a new chicken dinner that we took home and gave us the dessert to go as well. They also told us that they were not going to redeem the living social deal and we come back again and use it another time So as much as we did not have a good first experience here they did the right thing in all aspects and we will give it another shot soon. Kudos to the management.

My husband & I had Father's Day dinner here with our daughter. The choice was prompted by a "Living Social" coupon for a discounted Three-Course Prix-Fixe Dinner. First, the coupon allowance was very generous & well worth the cost. I also was pleasantly surprised that it was accepted on a "special occasion" evening. The food was delicious & plentiful. Our service was friendly, polished & efficient. The menu selection was extensive & had something for everyone. I had the prime rib, which I see someone previously complained about. Mine was cooked perfectly & was delicious. From cocktails, appetizers, entree & dessert.....an enjoyable experience. I would definitely go back when in the area & would highly recommend to anyone.

Great dinner with my parents. We stopped overnight north of Albany on our way across New York and picked this one off the Internet. Our server Dawn was fantastic. We tried a bunch of different items. Everything tasted good and was cooked well. The spring rolls, caesar salad, and lobster mac and cheese were my personal favorites. They brought a birthday treat of their insanely chocolate mousse out for my mother. It's a little pricey (but worth it.) The service was the tiniest bit slow paced in our fast paced world, but if you aren't in a hurry, definitely give this place a try.

This is one of my parents favorite restaurants. I have been coming here for years for dinner and special events. I've never had a bad meal but I know my brother does not like this place at all because the vegetarian gluten free options are limited (if any and he gets really sick of eating dry salad). They do a really great job with seafood and steak. The waiters are always lovely. Like super great. I've been to several events here...several weddings and other reception type gatherings. The catering for an event I went to recently was well done; oddly enough one of the stand outs was some fresh green beans that were cooked but miraculously not soggy at all even after hanging out in chafing dishes. The weddings I've been do have been nice events, but the food has not been good (probably has to do with the volume of people that they need to serve).

In all of my years living in upstate NY I have driven by this place hundreds of times and never thought to go there for dinner - mostly because it appears as more of a banquet hall than a restaurant. I was definitely curious about what it had to offer, and excited to try it. My first impression of the restaurant was that it was a little dated on the inside. It was just something about the dark wooden chairs, and the very dim lighting, it seemed homey but almost log cabin like. This restaurant definitely has a bit of an older crowd (there was a woman celebrating her 97th birthday that night) so if you are looking for a trendier spot this might not be for you. For appetizer's my dad ordered the French Onion Soup, I ordered the White Asparagus Soup of the day, and my mom ordered the Century House Wedge Salad. The white asparagus soup was absolutely delicious. The texture of the soup was extremely pleasing, and the portion was just enough that I actual finished the whole bowl. The asparagus flavor really came through without being too overpowering. The french onion soup was a traditional french onion soup with tons of that creamy crunchy cheese on top - my dad really enjoyed it.The salad was iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, shaved red onion, cracked black pepper, pancetta crisp and avocado ranch dressing. My mom enjoyed her wedge salad, but to be honest I'm not a huge fan of the presentation at all. First of all - too many red onions and not enough pancetta (or BACON).... Also, the cucumbers are all different sizes, and why is the dressing on the opposite side of the plate? Definitely not my favorite presentation for this kind of salad. For dinner, I ordered the Peppered Hudson Valley Margret Duck Breast, My dad and Kayla ordered the Light House Shore Dinner, and my mom ordered the Veal Oscar. The duck was crusted with both black and pink peppercorns, served with a smoked blackberry duck sauce and a crackling and confit wild rice cake.I enjoyed the duck, however it was a little too dry. I asked for the duck to be served medium rare, and I was hoping for more pink on the inside. The sauce was nice, but there was a lot of it, and it tasted more like BBQ sauce than blackberry, but overall I enjoyed the consistency of it. The cake was okay, I had a few bites of it but it just didn't make me want to keep eating it. I'm disappointed because I love duck and it's hard to find it cooked in this manor (usually it's served as a whole breast), so I was really looking forward to it - I just wish it was juicier. The Light House Shore Dinner was broiled lobster, pan seared scallops, crab stuffed jumbo shrimp, and whipped potatoes with veg. This dish missed the mark a little. The scallops were pretty good, but the potato was bland and it just didn't seem like a great plate of seafood. My dad seemed to enjoy, it for the most part, but my sister wasn't really a big fan. I think her and I have become seafood snobs after living in Boston and being around great, fresh seafood all the time, but at the same token I don't think restaurants should serve an entire seafood dish unless they can deliver. My mom's Veal Oscar was veal scaloppini, poached asparagus, topped with lobster and scrap meat, a hollondaise sauce, and whipped potatoes. The asparagus was done nicely, and had a beautiful green shade that added nice color to the dish. The overall flavor of this dish was nice, however I found the veal to be a little dry. I think this is because it was such a thin cut of veal that it would be almost impossible not to overcook it. My mom seemed to enjoy the majority of the dish though. Finally for dessert we ordered the Baked Alaska. It was a coconut sponge cake, with a passion fruit sorbet center, with torched swiss meringue and fruit coulis. The presentation was very appealing, but it just wasn't my favorite. My mom liked it, however the whole texture of the dish seemed a little off - for me personally. I will say that I would never order this type of dessert, simply because it's not really my cup of tea, so it may be a win for others ... just not for this girl. I have to say that I'm kind of disappointed with the way this review turned out... but I think my family needs to take some of the blame. One of my big issues is the number of entrees on this menu. There are so many different choices that I think the restaurant set themselves up for failure. I can tell from my asparagus soup that there are definitely some hidden gems in this menu, and I think this was a case of poor ordering. If I were to do it again I would love to go back and try the pot pie, and perhaps the potato wrapped cod, and maybe even the lamb. I think that this restaurant has some amazing things on the menu (my dad insists because he's gone there for lunch on several occasions and loved it) and I would like to dine here again before I completely write them off. full review at theloveofpasta.com

I attended one of those dreaded work related holiday parties here yesterday. I was definitely unimpressed. The hors d'oeuvres table was pretty lame, I'm sure the office planners approved the food so I can't fault the facility for the chocolate fountain before lunch but the veggies looked old and tired, the dip was actually just salad dressing, the cheese and crackers were sub par. Lunch was okay but the service was very disorganized. All the tables around us got their salads while we sat and waited but then we got our entrees before them and were done by the time the table next to us got their food. I had chicken with bland sauce, mashed potatoes and a few green beans. The dessert was either some type of gummy mousse or tiramisu, not really sure.

I was quite impressed with Century House. I had dined here for lunch many times but I brought my wife here for dinner and I impressed with the service and dishes. Overall, great experience.

I went to Century House a few times growing up and I just recently went back with my boyfriend (I'm 26 now.) We definitely felt like we were the youngest patrons in the restaurant but we were looking for a quiet, low-key night so it was perfect. The piano player really made our night. The food was excellent, probably the best sea food we have had since moving to this area. We each had wonderful meals which included lobster, crab cakes, stuffed shrimp and delicious salads as well as an amazing steak filet for my boyfriend. He still raves about it. The service was good. We were walk-ins and were told it would be 15 min. It was more like 40 but we went to the bar and I have to admit, the character of the building really lends itself to an OK wait time at the bar. There's a lot to look at and admire, the bar is quaint and the piano is nice. Our waiter was informed, swift but not too much so and courteous. We had a feeling he might have judged us in the beginning. We look young and we order expensively. We're used to people thinking we might stiff on a tip. However, we do tip well and we're sure he won't doubt us next time he sees us. All in all, I can say he will see us again, as we can't wait to go back. We just have to save up the funds first!

In a dining market dominated by chain restaurants the Century House is a welcome establishment. I've been attending banquets there for years and my wife and I decided to try it for dinner. Before our meal was over we were both ordering how we could overlooked what was right under our noses for so long. It has the ambiance of a "turn of the century" inn. It has excellent service and food as well. It is comparable to Tavolo at Glenn Sanders Mansion. Since we started dining there two years ago it has become our "go to" place for special occasions.

Fantastic meal. We've had several dinners there, and every one has been wonderful. Filet was cooked perfectly. Ambiance is very nice, if traditional. Easy to have a conversation. Service was amazing. Our waiter, Paul, was very knowledgable, and treated us like his only customer. Made a wonderful wine recommendation, and knew the menu inside and out. Wish every waiter was as good as him. Will be back there again.

This place has been here forever. Have gone here for dinner several times and brunch for a few different holidays. They do a great brunch I might add. For dinner its traditional American. Steak, chicken, fish. Decor is certainly old.
