I've been a true blue Bergen Bagel addict for years... Our relationship goes way back to 2002 when I was a poor artsy student in Brooklyn following my New York nose to a decent bagel in the neighborhood. This location was one of my favorite. The bagels are great, the portions are generous and the staff has always been friendly... Except recently, the new staff has been less than efficient from what I'm used to. The new staff specifically. How hard is it to remember an everything bagel over a plain? Or veg cream cheese over regular? Much more challenging apparently than I expected... The new staff is slow and I need to repeat myself several times... And even then they still got it wrong several times. My dear sweet Bergen, I love you but not your baggage... you are really pushing my loyalty....

Lived next to the OG Bergen Bagels on Bergen Street in Prospect Heights for a few years. After a brief time living outside of Brooklyn, I was pumped to be a few blocks from a Bergen Bagels again (albeit a different location). Most importantly, the bagels and bagel accessories (cream cheese, sausage + eggs, etc.) are still GREAT. In a city where there's lots of pretty good bagels out there, this spot is definitely in the GREAT bagels category. When friends or family are visiting, I'm proud to show these bagels off. That being said, the service here leaves a lot to be desired. The location on Bergen Street was tiny but crazy efficient. It was a well-oiled machine, with what seemed like a dozen guys (okay, maybe not a dozen, but they worked at such a furious pace that they were just a blur and I couldn't count) getting you out the door with a delicious bagel as fast as possible. Sometimes they smiled, sometimes they didn't, but they weren't unfriendly. The sense that I get here is that nobody particularly wants to be there, much less is going to go through any special effort to get you out fast. Line is usually pretty long on a weekend morning, and you're not getting out of that line anytime soon. Instead of the "dozen" guys of the Bergen Street location, there's never more then two (maybe three) dudes taking their time to get you out. Guess theres a different -- and cheaper -- owner. So... we order delivery more often than we visit. All the good, none of the annoyance of having to actually go to the location. Hit the Bergen Street location if you can help it. But... most importantly... GREAT bagels.

I ordered an oatmeal and 2 croissants (one strawberry and one cream cheese). Lets just say that those were the worst spent 12 dollars of my life. The oatmeal was a blob of something in a watery base, had no flavor whatsoever, no sugar, no nothing (just awful). And let me tell you about the "croissants", they are just a strawberry (very scant) filled danish and a cream cheese filled danish. They need to review the concept of a croissant. Needless to say I will never ever order from this place again. Horrible experience!!!

This place was across the street from the apartment I was Airbnb'ing. Decided to stop here for a bagel and cream cheese. Asked them how much, and they said $2. When I came to the register, it was like $3. Not sure what changed from the ordering process to the paying process, but it was almost a 50% price jump. Also, they made my order wrong and had to redo it. It did taste great, but the ordering process kind of killed things.

While the food is delicious and the staff friendly, it's also very slow to get your order. Like painfully so. I don't know what the issue is but, it doesn't seem to be a major concern. I am sure they would sell more coffee and other things if, it was less of an ordeal to receive even a simple bagel order. Some days I just can't deal with the process

When we were looking to rent our apartment, the sign announcing the imminent arrival of Bergen Bagels was a major selling point. In fact, I smuggled one of their bagels to a former neighbor who has since moved out of state... The good: these guys are literally next to the train, perfect for those mornings you realize you have nothing acceptable for breakfast at home or simply want to fuel up for a long day. They have a wonderful selection of juices, bagels and cream cheeses, as well as sandwiches and salads. They do a fairly good job of keeping the line moving even during busy times and the store is always super clean. Love having this place on Fulton not only for weekday morning bagel fixes but for Saturday errands, too. Could be better: if they wrapped their toasted bagels in foil instead of waxed paper, it would keep them warm for longer. Not so much an issue during summer time as I write this, but in colder months I appreciate when the toasted bagel I've ordered is still warm by the time I get to eat it. If you've been to Bagel World, you know what I mean...

My boyfriend and I were airbnb-ing in the area and our host gave us a bunch of options for eating out in Clinton Hill. Bergen Bagels was one of them. My boy friend is a big fan bagels and after we got to know that this place has over 20 cream cheese options, we had to go! It was a 15 minute in-line wait on a Sunday morning. It was pretty organized though. We got Jalapeno cream cheese and Sun-dried Tomato cream cheese. I thought that the jalapeno cream cheese was a little overwhelming for breakfast given its strong taste but the Sun Dried tomato cream cheese was absolutely fantastic. I wanted to steal my boyfriend's bagel. But he loved it so much! I am giving Bergen Bagels 4 stars because they didn't have an option of soymilk for cold coffee and also because it was a little expensive than your usual bagel shop. For 2 bagels and 2 medium cold coffees we paid 13 bucks.

Almost every time I go here to the Fulton Ave. Bergen Bagels, I regret it. The employees behind the counter are sometimes less than stellar and other times my unhappiness is caused by the long slow lines waiting for the cashier (this slow cashier thing also happens at the Myrtle location.) Also the atmosphere here stinks with folks just hanging out in the store (not customers.) Bergen Bagels on Bergen Street is awesome and the lines there move much faster. The same person that takes your order, fulfills your order, and rings you up. Why is one location so superior to the others?

    (2)
  • McKenzie L.

This location is definitely more eat-in friendly. It's big and spacious, but it doesn't have any of the charm the Bergen location has. And the employees here aren't nearly as friendly as they are there! But the food was great. I had a 7 grain bagel with jalapeño cream cheese and it was perfect! The cream cheese was actually pretty spicy (which is a good thing!).

Very, very, very salty everything bagels. Not in a good way.

  • Amanda M.

I've had one just too many bad experiences with this place-----The bagels are not great to begin with. The toaster seems to just suck---I've seen them put my bagel through it, but it seems to make no actual toasting difference to the bread. The coffee is terrible, weak and watery and if they god forbid put sugar in for you it is undrinkably sweet. They have more often than not screwed up my order, sometimes royally and not just on busy days. Often the wrong order has lead me to pay for things I never got---entire bagels, special cream cheese, etc. And to boot, the staff and in particular the girl who works the register sometimes is quite rude, unpleasant, and not real bright. Bye bye Bergen Bagels.

The Food is Great, IF and that is a big if. If you get the right food you ordered. The employees their do not listen, do not right your order down. I ask for a sausage egg and cheese, I get a ham and egg. It's like they are not paying attention. The only reason why I go there is because it's convenient to where I live.

    (2)
  • Anna R.

This is definitely the last time I have breakfast there. I use to go because the location is really convenient the prices are fair enough and they have lots of choices. But the food isn't fresh at all. Once I had a chocolate brownie and I'm pretty sure it was at least 3 days old. brownies are supposed to be wet and soft. This one was dry and literally tasted like old bread. Today the same thing happened with the chocolate croissant. Old and dry. They warmed it up (I didn't even asked for that) trying to hide the bad taste but it didn't work. Last time ever!

This place hit my radar when I was home on maternity leave and a dear friend came by with a dozen bagels a variety of cream cheeses and coffee from Bergen Bagels. My daughter is now 9 months old and I'm still coming back every other weekend for my bagel fix! I don't visit this place more than twice a month and every time I go it's super early on Saturday or Sunday so I never find the joint too crowded. I must say it IS a little funny with how they work their line but as many other yelpers commented it's a bagel shop folks we're not at the Ritz Carlton. I have gotten my order wrong before but the quality of food and selection makes it forgivable. I would recommend anyone give this place a try and just see for yourself... and then of course yelp about it! haha

I can't take it anymore. I was so happy when a Bergen was opening around the corner from my house having long loved the one on Bergen and Flatbush. Both product and service were disappointing at first, but I chalked that up to a breaking in period. That was, what, a year? A year and a half ago? The bagels themselves are equivalent to bodega bagels, not quite crispy on the outside and dense inside with incredibly spare toppings (an onion bagel is often a plain bagel with a slight oniony flavor. An everything bagel is a plain bagel decorated with a few specks of each seasoning). But it's the service where this location really shines like a black hole. Despite having stubbornly gone in there for ages, now, and always ordering the same thing I have to repeat my order several times every single time. Yeah, hundreds of people file through every day, I'll give you that, I don't expect every one of them to remember me, but it's not like I order some complicated, twelve-course meal. "A bagel (flavor varies), a little bit of tofu, lettuce, tomato, and onion." Yeah, that's a Rubik's Cube of an order, isn't it? Repeated at least twice, up to four times for that. I've often got to correct them about half-way through and - 1/2 the time - still wind up with the wrong damn thing. And, yeah, I know this is ultra nit-picky, but the fact that every one of them always asks, at the end of my order, "Toasted?" is like nails on a chalkboard to me now. "NO! I don't want it toasted! I would have said so if I did! If you're going to mess it up anyway, why are you introducing variables!?!" Add the sub-par bagels to the near-incompetent sandwich making to confusing customer-to-employee ratios and you get this: This morning there were two other customers. Five employees behind the counter. One guy was making coffee for one of the other customers. One was consulting the kitchen about an egg sandwich. One was poorly disguising that he was texting. One was moving cookies around in the cookie bin. One was stacking slices of american cheese. After waiting for several minutes, noticing the scene was not at all unusual, and determining waiting that long for one of those crummy bagels that was probably still going to be all wrong I just left. It's not a breaking in period. Place is just broken. I don't suppose I'll ever go back.

    (1)
  • Juliet F.

Crack heads and bagels. What more is needed on a weekend morning? Watching addicts creating a scene with the employees while waiting for pricey bagels and lox...

Some of the negative nellies criticizing this place need to lighten the eff up! Who are you, the king of Siam??? I'd like to follow you around for a day and look for reasons to give your shitty life one star. I went here twice and both times the service was prompt and precise. Not exactly the Russian tea room but wtf do you expect?! I had to go back to get another black and white cookie cuz they're so yum! Bagels here are awesome! Keep up the good work guys!

You have to take better care of your customers. Make a mistake? Be gracious, fix it, say sorry, and try not to let it happen again. I can forgive a long waiting period or a forgotten order, but not patronizing behavior. Here's how it went - This is on my bike route, so I pass it everyday. I've been in a few times and see there are definitely some customer service issues. No one working seems happy to be there, and you will be lucky to see anyone crack a smile even amongst themselves. The food is quick take out, so I don't need you to smile with me, but it helps. I went in today and ordered a scrambled egg and cheese on a toasted bagel, with a little butter. It came out lightening fast, which is why I decided to take a look at it before I left. Raw, runny eggs. And I don't mean yolk a bit loose, or eggs scrambled soft, I mean, the egg whites were completely raw and clear in some areas and white and cooked in others. No biggie. "Can I have the eggs completely cooked?" I told the cashier who gave the bagel to someone who seemed to be a manager (older man wearing street clothes.) Suddenly all eyes were on me. I must have looked like a deer in headlights. All I could do was smile and say sorry. Minutes later, the older man comes out with my egg on the spatula for my "approval!" And his expression was so patronizing, it was unmistakable. Two of the workers shrugged their shoulders in sympathy when I looked at them with hurt questioning eyes, like what is going on? I saw him maneuvering through the swinging doors, dodging the workers with my egg in hand to show me what I did not need to see. I lost my appetite. All I wanted was a simple egg and cheese, eggs cooked. When I finally opened the new sandwich, of course the eggs were dry, bagel not toasted or buttered, cheese unmelted. I will never go there again. With quick order cooking, this is bound to happen. Just be more gracious about your mistakes. Not every customer is a jerk trying to give you a hard time. You NEED to be better to your customers. You cannot afford this kind of word of mouth. You see what's happening to businesses around here. They are closing left and right. I'm sure many of them had the same "who needs them" attitude. I spend maybe $5 a week there when I don't have time to cook. Not a lot at all. But imagine $5 x 52 weeks x 5 years. This is money not helping your business grow.

  • Finlay L.

Update: a few more weeks and BB seems to have ironed out some of the kinks I mentioned in my initial review. More guys behind the counter, a little more streamlined system, and a greater sense of efficiency overall. The line still tends to build up, but nothing that's going to dissuade me from stopping in for a bagel. Meanwhile, some cautions: I was excited about the dill cream cheese, but it was so beyond salty I could barely eat it (and I LOVE dill). Also I got it into my head that a chicken salad sandwich would somehow be a healthier lunch option, and spent the rest of the afternoon feeling like someone had rubbed butter on my face. So...stick to the straight and narrow path.

I finally checked out Bergen bagels after a morning at Prospect Park a few weeks ago, and have since been there several times despite their being a bagel spot close to my apartment. The first time my boyfriend and I had bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches that were so, so good! The bagels are fresh and deliciously chewy. I like that they toast them lightly. I usually get the everything bagel. Recently I tried the whole wheat everything bagel and found it equally delicious. I've also had the lox cream cheese which was as expected, and today I had the garlic cream cheese. My word! My boyfriend is a bit overwhelmed by my garlic scent, but I don't care. I truly love garlic. The garlic cream cheese is not for the faint of heart in that it has raw garlic in it. I'm glad I tried it. Definitely something to eat on the way home instead of when heading to work. There is always a line when I go on the weekends, but there are a lot of employees so it moves fast. I will be back.

We ordered two bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches on bagels. When we received the delivery, both bagels were missing cheese (which I paid $1 extra for), there was barely any egg on each sandwich, and the egg that was in the sandwich had clear undercooked egg whites. I've ordered this more than once from here, and it wasn't always bad. In fact, it used to be good. Unfortunately lately, it's been mostly disappointing.

  • Amiyr B.

I'm always at Bergen Bagels for my early morning Bagel Fix. Their fast and get you your bagel so you can get out of there. They usually have a long line on the weekends but it tends to move quick. You have to time it just right. As for the Bagels they have so many varieties along with wraps and paninis, pastries and other cookies. They even can scoop out the Bagels or flatten them so they have a Bagel to suit every taste. They are somewhat lacking in the fruit department. I had to go across the street to get a fruit salad as their fruit salad options are paltry.

  • Caitlin M.

Big bagels, relatively good price. I think the bagels and cream cheese at The Old Bagel Shoppe down the way are tastier. Staff sometimes are friendly, sometimes not. Gets busy on Friday mornings. Credit card minimum of $5. Muffins are really good actually!

They flubbed our order but fixed it by delivering correct order to our door- thank you for doing the right thing BB! Great whole wheat everything bagels, perfect ice coffee. Check your order before you leave the premises- it's happened more than once

Their pumpernickel bagel with lox is absolutely the best. I did, however, see moldy tomatoes in their salad section (yuck!), but I've never had anything else than bagels from this place. :~)

Thank you to Bergen Bagel for supporting our neighborhood community school PS11! The school staff is always ordering and having food delivered. Our school is pleased to offer Bergen Bagels at our school tours to prospective parents. Thank you! facebook.com/PS11Brookly…

I was so excited for Bergen Bagels to open, with the choice of an early breakfast in the area limited to bodegas and Subway. BB is quite different from Manhattan bagel stores in that it is spacious and airy. The mid-wall to ceiling chalkboards list the details and prices of nearly everything on the menu - which is a lot. The rest of the walls are composed of floor to ceiling windows, usually open, giving the place an open, clean feel. However, it is most likely that you are here to grab a quick breakfast/lunch than sit and enjoy the atmosphere. The bagels are OK, nothing special and nothing not special. I don't think their toaster works well because twice I ordered a toasted bagel, and twice it came to me not toasted (even though I saw it enter the toaster). Also, their breakfast specials are appealing, but limiting. For example, they have a bagel w/ cream cheese + coffee special for $1.95. Sounds great! However this only includes regular, plain, cream cheese. There's no substituting either. When I asked for scallion cream cheese I was told I'd have to pay full price for the bagel, and full price for the coffee. Without coffee, a bagel with scallion cream cheese comes to $3.48. This is obviously still inexpensive, but the whole no substituting/plain cream cheese only is a crock.

While the bagels here are QUITE solid (and really the only ticket in the neighborhood bagel wise) I'm not going to call this place the best bagel in NYC like others have. I have had better bagels. Not anyways near where this spot is though, which is a prime location right by the C train station, so you can grab one on your way to/from wherever you're off to. Certainly a clutch spot if you're craving a (good) bagel at any time of day.

A new worker (2 days in) gave me attitude over "new policy". Ive been 2 this location over 5 times. Never had I been given my order, it is usually brought over to the register because the place is so busy anyone can walk out with their order. SO as he is handing it to me I gesture to the register and say Ill pay over there and with attitude he says, "new procedure we give you the bag to avoid confusion." Ive been to the location on Bergen off Flatbush and like I said its never been handed to me.

Just had some bagels delivered very bleh. The bagels were good but the whitefish salad was gross. Salty and yet bland. No flavor AT ALL. All I tasted were freaking salt fields. But again bagels were good just scraped whitefish salad off. My husband hated his tuna salad but he can write his own review. Fast delivery and great prices.

best muffins. best breakfast bagels. an assortment of juices and drinks. endless cream cheese flavors. quick when busy. very affordable.

  • Eddie M.

I would give this place a higher rating but their service and assembly line both need help. On the plus side they have great bagels and assortment of cream cheeses. I had an experience last week where the employee felt that he could change what was included on the menu and that I had to pay extra for it. Weird. Also, when it gets crowded in there it takes way too long to get a bagel and cream cheese. I feel like they could figure something out to speed up this process.

    (3)
  • Paul B.

The food is 75 percent as good as at the Bergen Street location. The service isn't half as efficient. And they get the order wrong more often than they get it right. I was a loyal customer on Bergen Street, but it's time to make the switch. Cafe 11238 is just up the block, and is superior in every way. Go there instead.

    (2)
  • M E.

Better than a lot of bagels out there. Especially breakfast sandwich bagels. It's usually crowded, and the staff always seems a little overwhelmed - they get orders wrong more than they should, but are quick to fix any errors, and are nice about it. I will always walk the extra distance to come here rather than just get a deli bagel on the corner.

    (4)
  • Tracy D.

Make sure your not in a hurry when you come here. The bagels are good always fresh, a large variety of cream cheese, the staff is pleasant enough. This place gets really crowded and there should be more then one cashier. Other than that, no complaints...

  • Shaniqua G.

Food is good, they have wifi but area is dicey along with the customers. I literally put my headphones in to drown out this guy cursing every third word...gotta love NYC. Don't let that deter you because eventually it got quite and somewhat peaceful.

A great Brooklyn bagel option. High ratio of bread to cream cheese and the line moves really fast. Cheap and easy.

BEWARE OF THE SCAM. First of all let me say that the employees here are a bunch of idiots. Honestly, they are doofuses. If you don't believe me, step inside and watch them work. They constantly mess up orders, and get defensive when you ask them to correct the mistake. I have seen them throw away and waste many many bagels all because they forget orders. WRITE DOWN THE ORDERS ON PAPER, IT'S REALLY SIMPLE. Most importantly... I'm very very skeptical on their taxing of purchases. Today I argued with one employee because he tried to tax me on each individual bagel & each individual drink I ordered. When I got back to my apartment I researched online and found this is against the law!! The correct way of taxing is to add each item up, and TAX THE TOTAL PRICE AFTERWARDS. Please beware of this next time you choose to go to Bergen Bagels. I argued with the employee over this, but he said that his manager tells him to charge that way. Again, this proves my point that the employees here are a bunch of imbeciles.
