Don't come here expecting the typical Chinese food you'll find at large restaurant throughout Chinatown. This restaurant specializes in Fukienese food which is a bit more simplistic or rustic as I would like to think. My friend who is Fukienese brought us here for lunch on Sunday and it was good for what it was - a tiny restaurant with communal tables and mainly soups/noodles. Sometimes you just want something a bit lighter and not stir fried soy sauce or a heavy sauce which this place definitely doesn't serve. We shared the ox tail soup, wonton soup, fried rice, noodles with duck and clams. The fried rice in my opinion had a bit too much oil and everything else tasted fine although I couldn't help but add sriracha for a kick. Overall, I liked the food, but only gave it 3-stars because I didn't think it was anything particularly special to keep me coming back. But I do recommend trying it out if you want something different from time to time.

I went with two other friend. One of my friend ate a fly out of the wonton soup... we told the lady and she stuck her finger in the soup, took out the fly and rub it... then she told us it is just ash from the wok... not recommended

Solid hole-in-the-wall spot. Going to up this review to four stars from three just because they have more seafood options than most of the other hole-in-the-wall noodle spots (clams, crab, etc), plus an intestine dish. Average price is $4-6 per dish.

I am one of the 4 friends who went with Costa D (other reviewer) to this place. I am writing to defend the honor of Ah Ping from its benighted detractors. I think a lot depends on what you're looking for. If you want glorified beef with broccoli, don't come here. If you want interesting, delicate, inexpensive Fujianese food, the kind that makes you feel like you're back in China, this is your place. The service is very good. They have a full English menu, and the language barrier is simply not a problem. In fact, although the place is small, the waitstaff went out of its way to accommodate us and prepare a table for five. ("Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies," 23rd Psalm) Ah Ping 1, Other Places 0. Furthermore, they allowed us to bring in wine and beer of our own (which they also serve on site) with no corkage fee. Ah Ping 2, Other Places 0. As for strange meats, the primary meats on the menu were lamb and duck. Plenty of seafood here too. Not sure what Costa is talking about. Costa D, who wrote an unfriendly review based on "disposable plates," "all-women staff," and "strange" food, would probably be more comfortable at Panda Express. That's fine. If you want real, authentic Fujianese food, the kind that makes you feel like you're living in the Joy Luck Club, Ah Ping is your place. I do agree with Costa D, he of "too nauseous to catch a cab" fame, that they overdo the MSG. (Interesting fact: it took 10 minutes to catch a cab because it was raining. MSG had nothing to do with it.) (Interesting fact #2: Costa threw up another time that day, but not because of Ah Ping.) Ah Ping 3, Costa -1. Again, if you're a wide-eyed tourist looking to eat your General Tso's and pathetically laugh over a banal fortune cookie, don't go here. You'll be out of your element. If you're a bit more intrepid, though, this is your place.

This place is not your best Chinatown option for Dinner. It's a hole in the wall and has only 3 tables. The all-women staff are friendly and don't speak English. I went with 4 friends off of a "recommendation" from another friend. We ordered an array of food, of which the only thing that was good was the braised sliced fish. The appetizers and entrees are dirt cheap, but served on disposable plates. The rest of the food was either so strange, poorly cooked, or bland that it wasn't edible. Over 2/3 of the menu is soup with MSG and every strange meat/fish you've ever imagined. I got the Pork with vegetables and white noodle soup, but it tasted like water and there wasn't really any meat in it. We all left the restaurant not full, heads swimming from the MSG overload, and feeling generally awful. We had to wait to catch cabs because we had to let our sickness subside. Basically, go to the more well-known places just a few blocks away.
