Ever since I can remember every time it was someone's birthday in my home, my dad always got us a Ms. Maxwell's cake. I have been there dozens of times now that my father has passed and it's usually my turn to buy the cake. It's such a tradition to me that when I am not asked to bring the cake and I find a Nasty Costco cake or Carvel Ice cream cake I'm almost brought to tears. My family has owned a business a few blocks away from Mrs. Maxwell's for over 30 years. We even banked in the same branch with the owner what's his name. I can't even guess how many times I've been on line in front of or behind him. I couldn't imagine how many times we have glanced at each other and not even said hello. I'm sure my father and what's his name probably knew each other and were a bit more cordial and he probably doesn't even know who I am. This is fine, because I'm a fan regardless, and have a healthy respect for obviously a hard working man. The last time I was there he was outside in their new parking lot on a ladder lifting up his sign screaming at a delivery guy who's truck was striking his sign as it tried to leave. They added some new doors and are pretty uptight about entering through the wrong door I always get stopped and literally showed back out like a flipp'n little kid. If I tried to do that to any of my customers in Park Slope I'm sure they wouldn't come back (not that I would because every time they do it to me I almost feel like telling them to flip off or just not come back myself). I got to say one thing though through the years he has done his share in the neighbor hood and hired from within. They have a funny way of charging customers. I think they really need to come up with a new system, at least bring it up to the 1950's man. The service behind the birthday cake counter is great and their always very artistic with what they write on the cakes. But I have to say my experiences on the other counter are always much different. if you're in there on a busy day and you don't cut in front of someone else or scream load it is very easy to find yourself standing there for hours because their employees don't seem to understand the concept of a line or saying who's next. This is probably my most confusing review, if I was another person reading it I don't think I could figure out whether or not I like the owner, whether or not I like the service, but three things are for sure I really like his manager Sam (Hey Sam) who I have known for probably 20 years since his days in the bank, I really love the cakes for flavor or nostalgia take your pick, and I would defiantly recommend this place and always come back.

I live in Queens and I drive to Brooklyn just to get cake from Maxwell's. They have the best Cheesecake , much better than Junior's , and very affordable !! I pay $25.00 for a whole strawberyy cheesecake at Maxwells, and if I went to Junior's I would probably have to spend atleast $60.00 !! They alo have a vast variety of cakes and cupcakes . Just yesterday I bought the Black and White Cake ( Black and yellow cake with whip cream topping and filling) , and it was delicious and affordable !! Only $15.00 !! They're cakes are nicely put together, tasty and moist !!

Nothing bad to say about this spot. The best tasting cakes I ever had! I can do without the food coloring but other then that, the cake and cream itself are tasty. Im so glad I don't live close to this place because I'd be 400 pounds already. They also take EBT folks.

Mrs. Maxwell's is a family tradition for me. My grandparents bought their cakes. Then my aunt bought their cakes. Now I buy their cakes for family functions. There's a real old-school feeling to this place, which I love. I also like looking at the old photos of people at the bakery. The cakes are pretty affordable and moist, but are so light that they sometimes don't stand up to the fillings with real bits of fruit. They sometimes crumble when you cut into them. I would suggest cutting the bits of fruit smaller and making the cake just a smidgen more dense. Also, it's not uncommon for their cakes to shift slightly en route. Stabilize them well during the drive. My staple flavors include mocha, strawberry and pineapple. They're pretty tasty. The frosting is never too sweet and compared to other bakeries, it's not an overly excessive amount of frosting. Other goodies abound at the bakery: cookies, cheesecake, marble pound cake, but I'm more a fan of their yellow cakes with fruit fillings. It's also a convenient one-stop place where you can pick up a card, balloon, milk, cocktail size beef patties for parties and a cake, of course. And there's a parking lot, and they take credit cards.

Mrs. Maxwell's cakes are so delicious had to give it a five star rating. The staff in the bakery was cheerful and helpful. The bakery is very clean. The cakes are baked fresh everyday what more can I ask for.

picked up a yummy Mocha chocolate cake here for Mother's Day. there was a line but it was being handled. People need to know that there is a great selection of cakes here and a lot of parking. they will fulfill your needs, write on the cake, and they have balloons available.

So I drove home from work yesterday, and needed To buy a last minute cake...I read the reviews on yelp and figured that this place must be good, the reviews were okay, but for a place that been around for so long only 30 reviews?!?...anyhow it was for my one year old brother's birthday. I ordered a plain cake with whipped cream...the smallest cake, pineapple filling, it was $28. That was the base price, I need light decor, it's was going to be around $41 to add a children's theme on a small cake, with no fancy filling. I decided to just stick to the "Happy First Birthday" writing, and it totaled up to around $30 and some change. I think that's a bit pricey for a plain cake, but money wasn't the object, I just thought maybe it tasted heavenly. I went home, we cut the cake and sadly it was strawberry (love strawberries, just sick of it). The extra they charged me for whipped cream was pointless, because it was flippin buttercream, got the opposite of what I ordered, and it still didn't bother me. What bothered me was that it tasted like a packaged cake from hostess, fake chemical frosting, and yucky packaged cake that's filled with crap, and that is what pissed me off! Maybe this place was good a long time ago, I don't know, but my experience was negative. I am not picky, despite all the downsides, and getting the wrong order, all I needed was for the cake to be worth the taste. Everyone hated it, not just me. I don't like being negative, but please, don't be naive like me, this place is a waste of time and money, go somewhere else for a good cake, my local PathMark bakes more better cakes!!!!!

  • Tasheena S.

Call your cake in ahead of time. It saves lots of time. There's parking in the lot right outside so no worrying about meters. You can run in, give them your name and watch them decorate your cake and you'll be ready to go within minutes.

We happened to run into this place by chance....it was last minute and we decided to have a bday party for our son. Their cakes looked so beautiful we had to at least try them once....it was perfection. We had the whipped cream cake...everyone loved it.

This place is huge! I love that they have their own private parking lot. Unlike cake man raven down the block , but their cake is so good it over look their faults. Maxwells is cheap on the pastries but their also not that great. I ordered a bunch of stuff , I have a sweet tooth and I wanted to try everything to see if we can have some type of relationship going ! I don't think we're going to make it, the red velvet didn't melt on the roof of my mouth like cake man raven , they also have blue velvet which I never saw in my life. The carrot cake is like spongy crap. Oops I meant spongy crap with icing. But everything was so beautiful, clean and the women working there are soooooo nice !! I wish we could have made it but I'm dumping you Maxwells!

This place is good. I have purchased a few cakes for this place on occasion. I have also had to purchase a few last minute like i need it on the spot cakes and so far i've always been satisfied.

Just ok not the best pasteries. Some are too sweet. This place has been, around forever but you won't find extraordinary pasteries here

  • T. L.

Ruined my wedding cake...they didn't want to refund my money and wanted me to drive ALL the way from my wedding location to have drop off the cake, have them take two hours to fix it (which was not guaranteed), and drive all the way back to pick it up. Granted, their cakes are delicious, but they will no longer receive any of my business. Save this place for petty birthday cakes or cupcakes because I had a memory ruined because of them. I am reporting them to the BBB. I'm just shocked how arrogantly they handled the situation. I'm only giving them one star because I have to in order to place this comment.

I've originally intended to go to Valencia Bakery in ENY to buy a pineapple filled birthday cake for my Dad-in-law. But it was closed. Then I remember about Mrs Maxwell's Bakery. I've brought a 8" yellow cake with pineapple filling for $22. I agree with the other reviews that the cake was fresh and tasty. But what impressed me the most of how fancy the person wrote "Happy Birthday Day" (see photo). It was artistic.

  • Nasilele H.

I have been enjoying these yummy cakes for years!! My Mom used to buy my birthday cakes from here and now I buy my son's. I favor the whip cream cakes and when I order in advance I get whip cream only within the layers. It is sooooo perfect that way and not to sweet. Well not to me ;) I LOVE Mrs. Maxwell's!!

  • Helen L.

We picked up a strawberry shortcake for a birthday event. It was light had just the right amount of strawberries. The cream was a typical cake cream. The prices are reasonable. The writing on the cake was magnificent. I don't think I have come across any person that has done dual colors!

I always LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their Banana Cream Pie. The smell of cake fills the air. I read the complaints and feel so bad. All the staff since my father took me there as a child has been so courteous! I still stop by whenever in the area. They are never expensive (Thank God). Good luck Mrs. Maxwell's Bakery.

Cakes are good, but customer service is terrible. They really need to step it up in the service area.

  • Chino P.

Mrs Maxwell's cakes have been at 85 percent of my family and friends celebrations. Always courteous and reliable service...with the ocassional language barrier here and there but, delicious moist cakes. Recently we had a big baby shower and we had an accident with the handling of the cake(our fault not the bakery's) and it was a full sheet cake. I called back the bakery and expalined the situation and they told me to bring them the cake box and all which I did. We could not get the same exact cake but, the bakery worked with me to ensure i had a presentable cake( or in this case CAKES) for our celebration. I am Thankful for the professionalism and manner in which they handled my situation which left us all very happy cake eating campers. I WILL DEFINITELY RECOMMEND AND CONTINUE TO PATRONIZE MRS MAXWELL'S BAKERY. HEADS UP BAKERY PERSONEL.....I am going to need a 50th Birthday Creation for the end of February for a female....so get your ideas ready...i will be in soon to order it as well as my holiday stuff.

  • Brandon D.

I've bought many birthday cakes, especially for parties from Maxwell's. The cakes are baked on the premises so they are always fresh. Everyone always loves the cakes and enjoys the fillings. The icings can be on the sweet side, but for a kid's party, that's not a problem. Their prices have been steadily increasing, but if you want a fresh cake, without that store-bought taste, to feed 30 or more people, decorated any way you want it. Don't hesitate!

  • Janie Z.

Yum!!! Yum!!! Yum!! I ordered my best friend a red velvet/ cream cheese cake and it was some of the most awesome cake I've ever had in my 31 years of life!! It's a cool set up too because you can see the cakes being decorated; there's an open layout. The only minor drawback is that they could have a better system established for picking up cakes that have been ordered. I waited for 20-30 minutes for a cake that was supposed to have been ready for pick-up and it's kind of difficult to do that with a toddler in tow.........( but I'd only deduct a .5 start for that because the cake was so, so yummy!!!!)!!!!

  • Natasha B.

Two words. Red velvet. I am quite the cupcake enthusiast and have sampled them from many a bakery across NYC. A friend of mine threw a party and I had the good fortune to taste the savory goodness that is Miss Maxwell's. It had to be the fluffiest, tastiest cupcake I've ever had. No frills or huge sizes or over frosting. Just one damn delicious cupcake! I've since then purchased cakes and cupcakes for my own events and the premises is clean, all pastries are baked fresh and they have a HUGE variety of sweets. Not to mention the fact that they're open every day (including Christmas and thanksgiving) and you can buy cards and balloons. Definitely a fan! (As if you couldn't tell by reading this)

yesterday was my first time having this cake, and it was sex in your mouth good and it was affordable. I can't wait to have an occasion to buy another, this will definitely be my new bakery!

  • Quincy G.

WARNING!!! If your diabetic or are on a low sugar diet than I would recommend steering clear!. Although they do have diabetic cakes, I've heard that they just doesn't taste the same....it would be like eating Tex Mex at those Chinese owned bulletproof places! This bakery is awesome!!! My grandmother, who had a legendary sweet tooth and pretty much introduced me the sugary sweet heaven that is dessert, bought all of our cakes for all occasions from this bakery. Now....I know that the amazing birthday cake is completely subjective and can even depend on one's upbringing and even ethnic background. For example, I LOVE Dominican style birthday cake...but Ms. Maxwell's is the complete opposite of that...I dare to say that it is a Semi-Southern- African American style cake!!! So that you can get the full spectrum, I'm going to extol the virtues of amazing birthday cake in order of importance 1) Icing - Should be a sweet and thick butter cream and have a little over 1/3 thickness of the actual layers of cake. There should also be thick decorative pipping along the top and outer rim of the cake with some kind of floral designs on the top in that same butter cream icing. For non-birthday cakes, love it when it is decorated with shattered orero cookies! That's right...I used "shattered" to describe cake decorating! Maxwell Rates - 4 solid stars! The icing is amazing! 2) Filling - If fruit based, should have real chunks of fruit in a gelatinous fruit flavored sauce.....if its going to be an Icing based filling, I would say, make it as thick as possible but not as thick as an actual cake layer (yes I love icing!) Maxwell's Bakery - 3.5! I'm only giving it that because the cake that I got for my Mom's belated birthday celebration, the filling was good but it could've been better...they needed to put more peices of fruit in the middle and make the layer a little thicker. 2) Cake - The cake itself should be so properly made as to be able to be eaten on its own. It should be moist but not sponge cake esque with a medium density and preferrable golden. Maxwell's Rating - 4 stars - To be honest, I rarely eat the actual cake of the birthday cake....if its not touching the icing or the filling then its not gettin' into my belly! They also have a party decorations area in the front part of the store and I was able to pick up some party plates, napkins, and cups...all for $3! in the clearance bin (My mom is extremely frugal!) One note of advice, I would just watch out on the prices when you get to the cashier, not saying the woman did it on purpose but....it was just annoying.

  • C. H.

One of the best bakeries in Brooklyn! They are one of the only places where I can get a fresh tasting cake. Some places have their cakes sitting out for days and the cake tastes stale or hard or they coat the thing in enough fondant or Marzipan (yuck) that you have no idea of when the cake was actually baked. Mrs. Maxwell's cakes are legendarily good and they have only gotten better over the years. Fresh cake, soft and moist and iced to within an inch of it's life. I love both the butter cream and the whipped cream. The only warning I have is to stay away from the red - it has a bitter after taste.

  • Nick A.

After hearing about all the buzz on the street and on yelp i decided to give this place a try. I ordered the blue velvet cake and disapointment is the only word that comes to mind. There was way too much stabilized whipped cream and the cake itself was tasteless

The best bakery In East New York Brooklyn! The Cheese Cake is delicious! (great with a cup of joe) the Brownies is really really good. Right amount of chocolate, and really good with a cup of milk. The place it self is big, private parking lot and the inside smells so good! Service is great! Great place to buy desserts!
