I am very surprised Maxwells only has 3 stars. Their food is great their drinks are strong, the atmosphere is comfortable. Check it out just once. I recommend the Thai Calamari. The Long Island Ice Tea's hit the spot (If you like strong drinks).

After a nice walk on Main Street one beautiful Saturday night, my girl and I decided to chance Maxwell's for dinner. Observing the façade, I noticed a wonderful antiquity to the dark-brown wood that was used for the doors and window frames that, for some reason, reminded me of an old train station; and to the left of the front door was an opened section revealing some bar tables and bar stools that were each occupied by seemingly happy patrons, enjoying their meals and drinks while breathing in a cool, late-night August breeze. Inside Maxwell's was even better. I was not expecting such a nice sight. Very homey, if you will. There were hardwood floors, perfectly-placed tables, along with their accompanying chairs, and a sleek-looking bar area. The lighting was dimmed, giving off a very romantic feel. Maxwell's is also a lot bigger inside than one would expect from just observing the outside. My girl and I were seated by a very friendly host, where we were then approached by an even friendlier server who helped us throughout our first Maxwell's dining experience. The food is downright amazing--as if heart and soul went into the cooking. I ordered and (quickly) devoured a Crispy Chicken Ranch Wrap, with a side order of waffle fries that weren't under- or over- cooked; and being not a fan of raw tomato, I politely asked to have it removed (while ordering, of course). The unsweetened iced tea was exceptional, as well, tasting as if it were brewed and steeped for the perfect amount of time--but I was also slowly getting trashed off the lemonade Martini (whose name I've forgotten--I'm sorry) that was a bit more strong than it was sweet. Overall, Maxwell's is a wonderful dining experience with great food, spirits, and people. The booth at which I sat with my girl was super comfy--and cozy, if I may--and the prices are well worth every penny--but nothing there is super pricey. I highly recommend Maxwell's, even though I only have one visit notched into my belt. You will not be disappointed. If so, my bad. Thank you for reading. I hope my review YELPS you decide on where next to eat and drink.

Just had my first dining experience at Maxwells and I have to say that I am really impressed. I've heard great things about this place and iam glad I had the experience of tying it. Let me just say the service here was impeccable: many check backs on how good our food was and offerings of refills on our drinks. 5 stars on service. The food too was also very good: Shrimp Po'boy, fish n'chips, and a surprisingly good parpadelle bolognese. All reasonably priced too. Atmosphere is pretty sweet. Cozy nooks all over. Drinks here are amazingly strong and at a considerable lower price than most other establishments around. I had a generous poor of a Grey Goose Martini (like 5oz.) for 9 bucks! You just can't beat that! I wish that Maxwells were closer to my home, I would no doubt be a regular here. If you're in the area I highly recommend checking out Maxwells. *Bonus is that their kitchen stays open late (11pm week nights - later on weekends), for all you vampire hunters out there!

I don't know what was up with this place today, but if it's run like this on a constant basis, forget it. My wife and I stopped in for lunch, and waited to be seated for well over 5 minutes (there was no line mind you, just no one standing in the host's area.) And to my dismay, that turned out to be the LEAST time consuming problem of the meal. We were ushered to our table, and then we waited.... and waited... and waited. Eventually 15 minutes passed and a waitress finally came to take our drink order. And then we waited some more... about 10 minutes later our drinks (a soda and a beer, nothing complicated) arrived. At that point we waited about 15-20 MORE minutes before the waitress decided to grace us with her presence again to take our food order. We promptly ordered our food, since we obviously had more than enough time to peruse the menu. The menu here is similar to the Library Cafe, which I wrote about ( and enjoyed quite a bit) recently. So if you're familiar with their selection, that's what you can expect here. Unfortunately the service here leaves a LOT to be desired. The kitchen seemed to be having a serious issue in keeping up with the orders, even though the majority of orders seemed to be not much more complicated than buffalo wings and burgers. We waited for an additional 39 minutes (i timed it with my iPhone) before our food arrived. Which, if it had been incredible, I might have looked past. Unfortunately my wife's food was oddly seasoned, and had a very strange flavor to it, and my philly cheesesteak was unremarkable at best. Will I come back? Maybe for drinks and wings, the atmosphere at the bar seemed pretty good. But that's about it. Beer specials are quite good, as are wing specials. And I'll admit the wings smelled amazing. We shall see, maybe it was just a bad day.

Typical bar fare...if you are looking for a quite place to have dinner this is NOT it. If you want to grab a few beers and some eats with friends this is a good choice. Right in downtown Islip!

I've eaten in and had take out and have always been satisfied with my meal. The portions are good sizes, and the menu is varied. I've had burgers, patty melts, various salads and apps. Last time I was there, I had one of their entree specials for the evening - a tasty steak. It is a bar and yes, can get loud, but I think that is to be expected in a pub atmosphere. They have a kids menu and crayons, etc for the little ones. A local favorite.

Overall the idea of this bar doesn't meet potential at all. I love the look of the bar but the food and lack of space brings this spot down big time. The feel and look of an Irish pub is the best thing going here. I really haven't had a good meal here its overpriced for the lack of quality this place puts out. The beer prices are a bit overpriced to me. It's good for going with the guys and watching the Yanks game on a Sunday that's about it. They have a long bar however but walking to the bathroom on a Friday or Saturday night and it turns into a ten minute adventure. There's just not enough room at the bar to make it work the way it should. My suggestions would be to by the old hooka bar next door knock the walls down and extend the bar space between the eating area. After that fire the damn cooks and find someone who can make a decent penne alla vodka. Their idea of alla vodka sauce is something I would find in an Arizona Italian restaurant. Now that I think of it I don't know why I'm being so nice to give this two stars I must really like the feel of this bar.

I'd like to give this another star or two, but the atmosphere is absolutely horrible. Sure, the decor is attractive, but I'd really like to hear my table's conversation and get my drink within 10 minutes of ordering it. The food is quite tasty, the portions generous, and overall, well-priced. I'd like to eat here more often, but it's hard to predict when the bar crowd or television noise is not going to overtake your meal.

  • Andrea G.

I'll give it a four, an extra star because it's close to my house. Maxwell's and I have a happy relationship for many reasons. I like the martini menu, I like the unusually seasoned onion soup, and Wednesday Wine night--half-priced bottles of wine, not too shabby. Also: the wings are pretty excellent. The service is spotty, although the waitresses are extremely pleasant and attentive when they, y'know, make it back to the table with my unsweetened iced tea in under fifteen minutes. I suspect they are overworked. Say what you want about the homogeneity of the Lessing's establishments--this is a good one, and it's pleasant for an early dinner, or a raucous time later at the bar, watching a playoff game.

I will admiy I enjoyed a quickie here. I popped in on a thursday evening at like 7, had two seared tuna apps and two pints of Guiness...i know wierd combo. The tuna was fine, nothing special and the Guiness was fresh...+1 star I suppose. There was a decent mixed crowd...singles, couples, guys and gals...mostly my age...~30 . Id go back.

Unless you love under-age drinking, not being able to walk without bumping in to someone, and love not being able to hear your own conversation...dont go!

This is one of our favorite dinner spots. Also our go to spot during Football season. They have a lot of options both food and drink related plus are child friendly (which is a plus for us as we have many to drag around). We have found that Friday and Saturday happy hours are popular there and it can get quite loud.

Good food, good beer selection, moderate pricing. My wife and I occasionally go out on a date night here, we enjoy the food and drinks. The wait staff is always very friendly and attentive, and you don't feel like you've been robbed when you get the bill!

  • Jai M.

I went here during Yelp's Drink Week. Ugh. Typical Long Island pub I guess- loud, really crowded (not because it's a popular place and everybody who is anybody is there but because the venue is stupidly narrow, so you're really forced to squeeze in), youngish crowd, pop and rock music, annoying cover band. Not going back.

    (2)
  • Renee W.

I'm in the boat with the other reviewers who complained about the noise - it was so loud I couldn't hear myself think let alone chat with my hubby at the dinner table. And the food? Ugh. I simply cannot believe this is a Lessing's establishment. What is going on? We won't be returning to this one...

I love going here on a Friday night for a later dinner and some after dinner drinks. The waitstaff is almost always on point with a few hiccups but that's expected (no ones perfect). The chicken springs rolls are always ordered bc they are soooo delish! The BBTC martini is amazing as well. The nights they have bands are always fun who doesn't love live music and some drinks. Maxwells is a local favorite for my friends and family!

It's hit or miss. They did add a lot of space which helps. Depending on who is bartending makes a huge difference whether a drink will take a minute to get or at least ten. I was there on a Wednesday a few months ago. I was one of three people at the bar. The bartender would rather text on her phone then serve a drink or give me a menu

I happen to really enjoy this place and I'm surprised the reviews weren't so great. It's run by the same owners of The Library in Farmingdale and The Post Office in Babylon. The menu is the same in all three places, so expect consistency. The setting is perfect for young professionals. It's clean, friendly, and everyone is looking to have a good time without going over the top. They have live music on weekends. It is a little small, but it creates intimacy. The have a huge bar, seasonal beer selections (including their own brew), and a large wine and martini list. They feature nightly drink and dinner specials. Order the thai calamari or the buffalo empanadas to start. My boyfriend loves their pulled pork sandwich. I almost always opt for the blackened crabcake sandwich. Make sure to also check out the other Lessing's restaurants.

This place is huge, much larger than I remember it previously. Went in on a Friday night with a party of 5. They only take reservations for a party of 6 or more. Ok, no problem. When our full party arrived at 7:45 the hostess (who needs to learn to smile and greet people) stated it would be a few minutes. Ten minutes later we asked how much longer and she stated we needed to wait until 8:00 to be seated even though we clearly saw open tables. When we were seated the waitress was in such a rush she didn't even give people a chance to finish their sentence before she turned around and walked away. By the way there were three other open tables on this side of the restaurant, in addition to what we saw by the main entrance. Food was average, French fries were ice cold... Weak but they were waffle fries which is awesome. One person ordered Mac and cheese, simple dish but more expensive then a burger.. That's crazy. It came out ice cold, we sent it back and it took 10 minutes for another one to come out. Others at the table were finished by then. She explained they had to make it again from scratch. Did not even offer to comp a drink to keep the person entertained. G-d forbid they refill waters at the table while people eat. Waitress needs to slow down and interact more with customers and spend less time talking to her other staff members at the register. Probably wouldn't go back.

Decided to check out Maxwell's this past Saturday night...our party of 4 was seated immediately & found service to be excellent - our drink orders were very quickly taken and filled, and we were never kept waiting long for anything...not sure why the complaints about the beer list, I found several local options not from the typical macro brews as some other reviews claimed, not a huge list but certainly not restricted to the cliched brands either...food was quite good, had the tequila lime shrimp which for the health conscious is an outstanding choice, nice portion of grilled shrimp accompanied by asparagus, fire roasted tomatoes & some truly delicious quinoa - others in our dining party enjoyed their meals as well to sum it up: good food, decent beer list, reasonable prices, friendly service - return is imminent

Nice setting for lunch, service was very very slow but helpful in deciding. The first item I tried to order from the menu was told they didn't have which was a bummer. The food was pretty good and made up for complete lack of service. Our chips were stale that came with the artichoke dip. Drinks should be made self-serve. I would call in for a to go order or stop in to have a beer. But I would probably not go back to eat.

Went to the Islip Fair for lunch today and decided to stop at Maxwells for lunch. I ordered the roast beef melt and I have to say it was the WORST roast beef I have ever eaten. It was dry and discolored and when I mentioned it to the waitress who very rarely showed up , she said "sorry". Well I'm sorry too, that I decided to give this establishment a try. Never again!!!

I give this place five stars. The food is delish great environment, friendly staff, a lot bigger than it appears to be from the outside. Recommend the sweet potato fries are to die for, wings are good as well as the burgers and surprisingly the baked clams are amazing. Cant go wrong.

I came here on the Yankees Home openers. Joe the bartender was awesome. The beers are nice and cold. Plenty of TV to watch the game at the bar or any seat. We only ordered some nachos and wings. Nachos were ok not great, the wings are also just wings. I enjoyed the place, the food is not to desirable if the nachos are anything like the food they serve. I will come back and try the food. Okay type of place.

This place, like the review of the post-office, has amazing service behind the bar. The food was also LARGE portions and appropriately priced. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable when we went for dinner but I could see it getting loud/rowdy/FUN after dark. The food and drinks were tasty too. They accomodated my meg-ryan order and the wings must've been delicious- bf ordered second order after his first! I was overly satisfied and the "on the house" Jameson shot on our way out sealed the deal!

This place has what I'm looking for in a bar with good food and a great beer selection with good specials. I don't like sweet food but the sweet potato fries with its maple glaze are spectacular. The texture of the fries are perfect and with the glaze it's awesome. Highly recommended.

37 minutes to get our drinks at table. Cmon maxwells. Wings were cold. Burgers were ok. Disappointed. Been here before and liked it but tonight was not good. Felt like we threw 200 bucks out the window.

Visit 08/20/2013 Came here with a friend that had been here before. We were looking for a local place to eat but didn't want to go to our usual spots. This was my first visit and had no idea of their menu. The menu had a large selection of items ranging from bar type food to full entrees. We weren't interested in eating heavy meals so decided on sharing a few smaller plates. We went with the Blackened Salmon with spinach, pretzel bites and seared tuna appetizer. Both fish dishes were very good. The pretzel bites would make a better bar type snack to pick on while drinking. We also tried tap beer that the server recommended but it wasn't to our liking. Not a place I would go out of my way for dinner. I can see it being a better fit for a gathering of friends to drink and eat. Being I came here for dinner, I can only rate it based on that experience. And I guess if Yelp allowed for 1/2 star ratings I would have given it a 2.5. This visit took place on 3/28/2014 Came here knowing my first visit was the greatest experience but believe in second chances. Party of 3, food ordered: Pear & Goat Cheese salad with grilled chicken, Buffalo wings, French Onion soup, Quinoa & Shrimp and Homemade apple crisp. I ordered the salad thinking you can't really go wrong with a salad and was proven wrong. The salad was pretty bland and the dressing that comes with it was awful. I asked for a vinergrette dressing instead and while better, still pretty bad and I ended up eating it dry with no dressing. The Quinoa & Shrimp dish was different. The quinoa consistency was the norm and was very wet. Buffalo wings were decent and I was told the soup was good as well. Here's a little surprise - we were charged $1.99 for side sauce. Now it's not the $2 that bothered me as that amount won't make or break me. However, I was surprised at the charge because it was either for the second salad dressing I asked for (1st one was horrible) or for the extra hot sauce my friend requested to go with the Buffalo wings. Two simple requests that most anywhere else would have happily been served with no additional charge. Being the food was no better than on my first visit, I'd stick with not coming here for dinner but possibly more for drinks and bar food type items.

I frequent Maxwell's a lot with my wife and kids....for the most part since the expansion we have been seated on the quieter side....the noise really never bothered me before maybe because I'm with two little ones. The food is decent--to me Maxwell's is what it is--I'm not expecting a 4 star meal when I go in...but a friendly place where my family is treated well. Great place to watch football during the season as well.

Sometimes when you lose two kickball games in a row you need a beer to calm down. When you lose to a team with players nicknames "Unibomber" "Tiny" and "Butch", you need a few pitchers. Enter Maxwell's. As part of the Lessing's crew, they rock a taps and apps special every Tuesday featuring $3 pints, $12 pitchers and $5 apps. Team Yelp kickball squad came here after our most recent defeat and ordered 3 pitchers along with half the menu. Note on the pitchers, they have Local Ale and Local Blonde on tap and they're made by Blue Point specifically for Lessing's restaurants. They are delish, so don't immediately grab a blue moon or whatever else is on the taps menu before you try one of these. On to the meal! I rocked: -Chorcos (spicy asian pork, serrano pepper, napa cabbage, citrus chili vinaigrette, crisp wonton shells) from the food truck taco menu $9. They were actually good, although I could've gone with out having a fried wonton shell. Nice flavor on the pork and dressed cabbage on top make it a winning dish. Be warned, since the shell is fried, after one bite this guy crumbles apart. -Wings $5 - Above average wings, go for the hot. No problem here. Service was solid. We all had drink refills and when an order came out wrong, another dish was brought out quickly with the mistake corrected. They recently expanded and now you can hang out around the bar without feeling like you're in a cramped hallway. I can't speak for the crazyness that might go down on a weekend, but for a sulking kickball crew on a Tuesday, Maxwell's did us right.

I wish I didn't have to write this, but, 1 more strike and they are out! Got a salad with grilled chicken and it was 90% lettuce! We got the baked clams and they were burnt, no flavor and to top it off we waited 45 min for our food!

  • Brendan H.

Maxwell's is a bar and grill that has perfected the recipe for targeting the proletariat: Horrible draft choices of the standard macro brews with the token Blue Point tap and blissfully ignorant patrons who consider Shock Top and Blue Moon the "fancy" stuff, combined with typical bar fare that appeases the limited palate range of it's clientele. I suppose I should be wearing a fedora while writing this, but it is honestly how I feel about the place. Wait staff are very pleasant. You could do worse.

  • Jennifer C.

I went here with my fiancé and 2 daughters. We went for dinner and all the dishes were horrible. The only good thing to order is the Thai calamari. The salad was lackluster and the dressing had no taste.

  • Jeanine C.

Well the food for one, these people can make food. The Stuffed Clams were absolutely delicious! As well as their chicken sandwich and waffle fries. Pricey? A bit. It wasn't over the top though. Their drinks are also amazing. I had the Pink Lemonade and White Sangria - both highly recommended for you fruity drinkers. Our service was on point, as well! After dinner the lighting does get dimmer, of course for the nightlife. So if you're still seated you'll be hurting your eyes to see the person in front of you. Yes, for sure I'd go back again!

Went there for lunch on a Friday and had the roast beef on a garlic hero with mozzarella. It was good food at a fair price. I agree with other posters that time in between ordering and actually getting something should be cut in half. Also, if you like sweet potato fries, they have some good ones.
