Not only is the food exceptionally great, but the presentation and the restaurant's atmosphere really set the mood. Highly recommended.

We heard very good things about this place from locals so we were excited to try it out. We arrived a bit before they closed and thought to escape the warm outdoors by sitting inside- but that was a big mistake as it was burning hot inside and we kept drinking water to cool off. They were out of butter tea- so we couldn't try that. I got the chicken thali which was ok, but not really good. The roti was the best part. My husband got the sautéed thenthuk, which are noodles, and he liked it. We didn't really get to enjoy too much because it was so hot inside and we were too full of water- wish they had a way to cool off the restaurant.

We had a pit stop at the Himalaya Restaurant on a recent road trip to Montreal. We were surprised to find a Himalayan restaurant in Plattsburgh. Himalaya is located in the downtown area, pretty close to the interstate Highway 87. Parking was easy on the street. The space was very nice inside and the service also was also ery good. As we were newcomers to Himalayan food, we took some recommendations. Everything we had was very good and I loved the Roti. The food for me was a cross between Indian and Chinese cuisines. Our party of three really enjoyed it. The only slightly negative point is it was a little pricey Not expensive by any means but a little higher priced then we expected. I really liked the Himalaya Restaurant and I wish we had something similar around Philadelphia.

Food was excellent, service was admirable. outside seating was nice, but cramped. We were there on a warm day and the indoor area was unbearably hot.

We decided to do a day trip to Plattsburgh simply to try some food we'd never tasted before - Tibetan, Nepali, and Bhutanese. It was well worth the 2 ¼ hours drive up and a bit longer on the way home in some heavy rain. Inside, the exposed brick walls are decorated with framed photos of Himalayan life, while paper lanterns and bunting of Tibetan prayer flags hang from the ceiling. The dining room is small, holding maybe 25 -30 customers. There are also a few tables outside on the front sidewalk with an awning above. We arrived just past 5:30 on a Saturday and garnered two of the few remaining seats. The hostess promptly provided us with menus and a carafe of iced water. The menu is divided into appetizers, side orders, momo (dumplings), and entrées from the three ethnic cuisines. There is also a separate beverage menu proclaiming at its top that all house wines are from Trader Joe's. In addition, they also offer soda, bottled beer, and a variety of teas. We went with the bottles beer, each enjoying a Lake Placid Ubu ($5 each). The two of us were definitely in agreement that we wanted to try the Momo ($11.25 for eight dumplings). These are native to both Tibet and Nepal and can consist of either meat or vegetable encased in flour dough and steamed. There are eight to an order and they are served with a shredded cabbage salad and a moderately hot sauce. We opted for the mixed variety which gave us two vegetable, and three each chicken and beef. The vegetable and the chicken were our favorites as they both had really nice combinations of spices and flavors. The beef variety was a little less moist and not quite as flavorful. My wife selected a Tibetan dish for her entrée, Shapta ($16.75) - meat sautéed with seasonal vegetables, garlic, ginger, and served with either rice or drobuk. My wife chose beef for her meat, and in case you're wondering what drobuk is, it is steamed, white flour dough bread. And that's what she chose. Once again, the thin slices of beef were on the chewy side, but the spicing on the beef and vegetables, and the broth at the bottom of her bowl were absolutely delicious. Tearing off pieces of the drobuk allowed her to soak up all that broth to fully appreciate this preparation. My selection was from the Bhutanese cuisine on the menu, Tsipsha Paa ($16.75) - three large, slow-cooked pork back ribs with kale in a mild pepper powder served with white rice. Supposedly, it is a delicacy enjoyed during annual rituals. The ribs were very tender and coated with both a very light batter and seasoning like I've never had before. The kale was tasty and I used every bit of the rice to soak up and enjoy the sautéing oil on the bottom of my plate. I could definitely make this an annual ritual! We had no idea what Tibetan butter tea (Suja) was, but it sounded very intriguing. It was listed both on the appetizer menu and on the beverage menu. We asked our server about it after we had placed our food order and she replied that she thought we would have enough food with what we had just ordered. I later looked it up on Google to satisfy my own curiosity. She was also right, we did have plenty of food to fill us up. I don't want to overlook that each of us was asked how spicy, on a scale of one to ten, we wanted our entrees. My wife chose a six and I said a little less than hers. I could still taste some spiciness in my dish, but didn't find hers to be too spicy either. If we don't find someone closer to offer these cuisines, I think we may have to plan more trips to explore Plattsburgh. I'll take their word that the food is authentic, and you can tell that a lot of care has gone into preparing this food.

Still as good as it was 2 years ago! Finally got back there last night (my final evening in this area) and had the momos, steamed bread and salmon in a spicy homemade tomato curry broth (served with a pile of rice, a side of lentils, awesome flatbread and pickled baby carrots). I was so happy and ate everything to the last drop. Seriously - I would be here all the time if I lived closer. If you ask for spicy, you'll get it. Owner is very friendly and helpful - she will explain anything on the menu and even give suggestions as to the best ways/traditional eating methods.

This is a tasty place and brings some welcome diversity to the Plattsburgh restaurant scene, and as others have mentioned, it is a friendly, welcoming place. But I am down to 3 stars since I will be seriously thinking twice about eating here in the future due to their recent increase in prices of 25% or more. Of course, the owners have the right to charge what they want, and no doubt they have made a calculation that sales should drop off only slightly with the increase. If that's the case, I wish them (and everyone else who can still afford to eat here) luck. But paying $16 instead of $12.75 for my favorite dish is a big difference for me and I don't personally think is justified given the portions, quality or overall selection.

Great Tibetan food in a quaint town of Plattsburgh. I ordered the thupten (a classic Tibetan dish) which was very good. They even ask you what spice level you'd like the food to be. Unfortunately they were out of butter tea. Overall the staff were very gracious and inviting.

I went here a few months back. This is a small place, but the food and service are very good. The food is similar to Indian and Chinese food in that much of it is like a saucy stir fry, but different in a good way. I like spicy food and the Bhutanese dish I had did not disappoint me, but could have been spicier. The waitress said they tone the heat down a little for American tastes, but if I called ahead they could make a true Bhutanese spice version for me. The flavors were great. My wife and our friends also enjoyed their dishes. The only down side is that they are not open for lunch on Saturday. We found that out when we tried to go there last weekend. Hopefully that will change. I will go back and I recommend it for a change of pace.

Great little restaurant in downtown Plattsburgh! This was my first experience eating Himalayan food and I will keep coming back. Atmosphere: on the smaller side but decorated to make you feel just as if you were in Tibet and very pretty with lots of lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Food: we started off trying the butter tea. It is like nothing I have ever drank before. It tastes just like you are drinking melted butter which is strange. After a few sips it was enough - but interesting to try. As for meals I had the shapta with beef served with the drobuk which was delicious and a good enough amount of spice (for me) with the mild...the extra spicy one would have been just as good too. Service was average for a small place like this, our server was friendly though. Keep in mind they close at 2pm and then reopen back for dinner service at 5pm again

This is by far one of my favorite Bhutanese restaurants in New England. I've only been here once with a friend, but the food and customer service is exceptional. The owner came out and greeted us when we first stepped foot inside the restaurant, and went through the menu with us, and provided information that led to us choosing our dishes. I started out ordering some dumplings as appetizers. It was a good choice, because we didn't want to be full before the main meal. After finishing up the appetizers, we ordered one of my favorite dishes, which were Tsipsha Pa. It's pork ribs slowly cooked with green leafy vegetables, onions, tomatoes, chilli powder, ginger, and garlic until it is nicely tender. We also requested the kitchen chef not to add too much chilli powder, and it came out perfect just the way we wanted it. The dish came out nicely and tender, with a little spiciness to. Needless to say, I'm stoked the owner of the Himaylayn in Plattsburgh will be opening a new location in Burlington, VT.

Never pass this place! The food is the best comfort food and their hospitality is a breath of fresh air! It doesn't matter what item you pick on the menu it will be fantastic! Just from reading the back ground on the style of cooking and the history of their culture was convincing enough to order everything.

In a city filled with pizza shops, burgers bistros and chain restaurants, its so nice to know you can get an incredibly delicious meal that is lovingly prepared by a local family that serves authentic cuisine. From the second you walk through the doorway, your nose is met with an aromatic explosion of freshly prepared food with complex spices. If its your first time trying Himalayan Cuisine (think Chinese food thats healthy and does not make you feel like crap after you are finished), then ask the owner or whoever is there to order for you, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommend this restaurant for couples, families and people looking to dine rather than eat.

Not bad but the food was almost unbearably spicy. We both ordered mild, mine was hot enough my eyes were watering and I had to keep taking breaks to let my mouth cool down. The flavor was good but mostly tasted like chilly powder. My wife's meal was equally spicy, she took 3 bites and refused to eat any more. I enjoy spicy foods but this was too much. Prehaps they screwed up our order and made it hot. There was only one waitress and she was trying to deal with phone orders and about 10-15 tables. We never saw her outside of ordering our food. After finishing and sitting about 1/2 hour I finally got up to pay at the counter. I don't think I can give this place another chance with the lack of service and unbearably spicy food. I'll stick to the Thai place.

We had a fantastic dinner here last night. We have never been to Plattsburgh, but were up here to spend a quiet birthday weekend in Schuyler Falls snowshoeing and enjoying the scenery. Both dishes were delicious and awesome. Spicy means spicy and it is amazing! The ambience was great, and everyone who works there is friendly and attentive. Next time we are up here, we will definitely be back! A second location in Troy, NY would be awesome. ;)

Always a great meal! The food here is really flavorful which is refreshing in Plattsburgh. The curry-style main dishes are always excellent although I will say that the beef in the Nepalese dishes is very tough almost as though it is dried, which I do not care for, so I always ask for chicken. The momo appetizers are tasty but have a thick wrapper so if you prefer a delicate wrapper they might not be your favorite. The roti are the best I've ever had and I've been to Asia! My main complaint is that it's beer and wine only, so there are no cocktails. Other than that it's a really fantastic place for a meal in Plattsburgh!

I came here while traveling for work after checking out their yelp reviews and their wonderfully clean health inspection. OMG I am soooo glad I did!!! I had never tried Himalayan food before, now I only wish we had one in my home town! I hope that I find myself back in Plattsburgh again.... Just so I can eat here! I had the dumplings and the Dahl- truly wonderful food, service and ambiance. Peaceful, calming and deliciously nourishing!

What a gem! Was in town for work and looked to yelp for a good place for dinner. Outstanding flavor and quality of food. The portions were just right and the service was really nice. I loved the flour bread and they also carried two local beers which was nice.

Yes this is as good as it gets. This is one gem in a sea of mediocrity in Plattsburgh. What a great find. We live in the Hudson Valley of NY and there is a dearth of ethnic restaurants in the valley. Farm-to-table restaurants are a dime a dozen but just try to find something as interesting as Himalaya here-you won't. We were spending a couple of days up by Lake Champlain so we figured we would check out the restaurant choices and we could not have been luckier. The food is unique, inexpensive and extremely yummy! The owner of Himalaya welcomed us graciously into is well appointed restaurant and then proceeded to fill our bellies with his made-from-scatch food. We were not disappointed.. Now to figure a reason to go back to Plattsburgh.

I came here the other night with my family after hearing all the great reviews. I've never tried Himalayan food before so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The menu was a little hard to understand especially since I wasn't familiar with the items so ended up ordering a simple noodle and vegetable dish. The food that was brought to my table all seemed very well prepared and put together. My dish was very delicious and just the right amount of spicy. They don't have much of a drink selection (water, tea, beer, wine) but they do have a large variety of dishes from three different types regions- it was very interesting to see. Overall, the restaurant is nicely set up and very comfortable. The service is great but we did have to wait a little while. Luckily we caught it on a slower night because I'm sure we would have had to wait a lot longer than we did. If you're in the area, this is a great place to get authentic and different food. I would highly suggest trying it out.

Stopped for lunch at the Himalaya Restaurant while visiting a friend at SUNY. We had read the previous reviews and were hopeful after hearing it was vegetarian and vegan friendly. We were not disappointed! The food was amazing - I highly recommend the vegetable thenthuk soup! Locally sourced, organic ingredients, everything is handmade, and the service is wonderful. The lady who served us even went out of her way to ask about one of the art pieces on the wall we were curious about. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in NY.

I wish I lived closer to this place! Definitely a gem in Plattsburgh! Everything was extremely flavorful but not too overwhelming. The employees were so friendly and warm. I have never had Himalayan food prior to my visit but I can ensure you I've fell in love. If I am in the area again I will make it a priority to come here!

Dined there 9/20/2014 evening because my son had a craving for home-cooked Asian food after a month in the dorms. Atmosphere was comfortable and tranquil. Menu took some time to grasp. Food took some time to come out but was excellent and tasted v healthy and fresh. Prices were reasonable and portions were fair.

I stumbled upon Himalaya while visiting Plattsburgh on business and looking for a place where I could get a decent vegan meal. Thanks to yelp reviews, I was certainly not disappointed! I had their subzi thali and thought it was a great value and deliciously prepared. I enjoyed trying a variety of small servings and would suggest a thali for those wanting to try different offerings. The food was spiced exactly to the level I specified and was truly a treat! The owner and server was very kind and clearly appreciates her customers and their support. A great and rare find!

I have never had Himalayan food prior to tonight, but I have to say, based on this visit I have a new favorite cuisine. Everything is prepared absolutely from scratch (fresh) and it shows. I can't even describe the robust flavor combinations that I experienced, except to say that you have to try it. Even the curry is prepared fresh to order. All of the beef is locally raised and is grass fed. They only use olive oil, and the all of the salt that is used is sea salt. These are the little things that make the difference. The staff was very friendly, and we were waited on by a woman who said that she was the owner. If you have never tried this place, I truly hope you do soon... Because you are missing out!

I only have it a 4 start because I have nothing to compare it to. Very fresh, deliciously spicy (I ordered it that easy), and did I say fresh?!? Definitely recommend! If you like Indian, this will be right up your alley! You will not be disappointed!

I was expecting something different from Indian food. I had wild caught salmon with rice, dahl and bread. I thought it was good but it was spicer than I expected considering the description states that it is less spicy than Indian food. The restaurant is nicely decorated, the service was excellent and seating is comfortable. I am going to give this place another try soon.

I've been a couple of times now and the food is excellent. If you're a fan of Indian or Thai they offer something different (Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet) you'll enjoy. A great addition to downtown Plattsburgh. The drink and alcohol selection is a bit basic I think it's mostly due to the owner's cultural background. Service has always been friendly and attentive.

We read a local newspaper review of this place and craving something different from the usual variations on fusion-American-Frenchish food in Burlington, we made a trip of it and went across the lake to Plattsburgh. Totally worth it; love the fact that they have three very different if related cuisines -- Tibetan, Bhutanese, and Nepali. We tried some of each -- beef momos from Tibet, a mushroom curry and a beef and potato curry from Bhutan, and roti and dal from Nepal. All were outstanding; very fresh, beautifully spiced, and attractively presented. The service was excellent, with the owner coming out to talk to us at length, offer helpful suggestions on the menu, and even brought out a couple of his own specialties (for his own tastes) that were not on the menu. I highly recommend this place and only wish it were a little closer.

I didn't really know what yelp is until i got my new iphone place. My parents were gonna be in Plattsburgh and i saw the reviews for the Himalaya. We went that night and the food was great. The appetizer was a beef sort of dumpling and before you dip it in the sauce you are supposed to suck out the juice. Anyway those were good. I had pork and it came with this homemade dough that was awesome. The ribs were good and so was the salmon. This is not a normal college student meal or downtown meal but it is worth it. The price is fair. Also for al you soda drinkers they don's serve any unnatural food. They serve wine and natural carbonated flavored drinks like soda. Overall the surrounding environment was cool and very unique too. Ultimately, this is a good restaurant and the workers will take care of you. Enjoyy!

The food was AMAZING and the staff was extremely friendly. After mentioning that I was from India, our server became much more conversationally engaged, and we learned that she and her husband owned the place. They use as much local and organic produce as they can, and never shop in bulk, always buying their fresh ingredients every two or three days. Note that the menu has three different nationalities of food, each on a different page: Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese. Be sure to try the steamed bread. The soups and curries were extremely filling and very flavorful. The decor was also very tasteful, with hanging artwork created by monks and Tibetan prayer flags stretching from wall to wall. The colors of the artwork and walls allow for a very warm yet interesting atmosphere but don't overshadow the food. I loved the fact that the lights were bright enough to see your food clearly, as opposed to some fancy restaurants that keep the lights so dim, you can barely see your food. Service is not the fastest, so be sure you have ample time when you go, but it's well worth the wait.
