Awesome family restaurant in Portales. The butterfly shrimp were good, though the popcorn shrimp were not. The sides were good and plentiful. The salad bar is very good and has plenty of variety. The beer is cold, and the service was excellent. My only complaint is that there are only TVs in the bar area, though maybe that's a good thing because people will actually talk to each other more. Anyway, a very good place to go for dinner if you find yourself in Portales.

Mark's has the best steak fingers and onion rings in town. I've had almost all of their menu and enjoyed everything.

Stopped in here for dinner once, then took my class there for lunch a couple of times. Atmosphere: It is part of a strip mall, but parking was never an issue. It may not look like much from the outside, but was quite nice on the inside. There's no doubt that there is a country vibe to the place. It is very small with a limited amount of seating (biggest table has 6 seats). However, it was never full, so we never had an issue getting a table. Staff: The staff was always friendly and helpful. They were polite, professional, and ensured we always had full glasses. They were kind enough to provide us drinks to go. Food: If they would have had the steak I wanted on my first visit, this place might have earned that last star, but they were out. I tried something different each time I went there and each selection was fresh, cooked as expected, and tasted good. I never had enough room for dessert, though it always looked good in the display case. Overall, this is a very good restaurant with very good prices. Even though I'm not a local, I felt comfortable here thanks to the staff.

Mark's serves up some pretty tasty burgers at a reasonable price ($8.61). There's no nonsense about them and they're not dripping with grease. A simple cheeseburger at Mark's has the softest bread/buns, fresh crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and a perfectly charred meat patty topped with melted cheddar cheese. What more could one ask for? I ordered my cheeseburger with a side of french fries and I was quite full afterwards. I will say that the french fries weren't hot when they arrived at my table but I guess that was made up for in the flavor of the burger. A little warning is that the service is pretty slow (I had a party of 3) but the burger was worth the wait. I'm sad I didn't venture out to try Mark's burgers earlier on in the semester (instead I went and got mystery meat burgers from McD's across the street)... Now that school is about to end, I guess I'll just have to make more trips to Mark's for my burger cravings, but next time I'll be adding a kick of green chile ($0.75) to my cheeseburger. :)

We stopped here on our drive from Roswell to Amarillo and it was recommended in my Fodor's New Mexico guidebook. It was... nice. It was freezing outside and lightly snowing and not much warmer inside with the door opening and closing and a broken skylight above us. The service was friendly and quick and the menu was decently sized. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with a cinnamon roll and the husband ordered the chorizo omelet (the special) and added onions and peppers. The biscuits and gravy were above average, but nothing to gloat about. The cinnamon roll was more like toast with some icing. The husband's meal was good as well, but nothing stand out. An average little local diner with friendly staff and cheap prices. I can't imagine myself in the area anytime soon, but I'd check out something else next time.

When I first moved to Portales about four years ago, I use to go to Mark's all the time with friends (especially for the live music on the weekends). The past year, it has just continued to go downhill. The coffee is great, but the main waitress there is a bit sour towards the guests. Plus, menu pricing is not relative to the value you get in their food there. They get a three star rating because their country fried steak is still pretty good and the best in the area.

Eat there one time will never go back! My wife had a grilled cheese it was just a slice of Kraft singles and plain white bread 7 dollars really? I had a burrito was nothing but seasoned meet that had clearly been way over seasoned so much salt it actually burned my taste buds. When I complained about how bad the burrito was they said I still had to pay for it since I took a bite. I will never go back.

My first time eating here and I must say.. very good food. Nice family atmosphere, simple decor and very friendly staff. Nice size portions and prices are reasonable. I had a chefs salad which looked a tad weird with the slice cheese on it, but it was good. Wife had taco salad which was better than mine. Kids had burgers, of course and they were good. Great sweet tea!! Ate here again and had the green chili burger. GREAT!! again, this is a good family spot with good food.

Marks has some pretty good down home meals. You know the kind... that good ol southern ... carb loaded... gravy coated... nom nom nom kind. Personally I find them a bit pricey , but , the service is good, and they really do have amazing fried okra and their onion rings are probably some of the best I have ever had. (did I mention they serve the nectar of the gods Dr. Pepper) . Definitely good for a family dinner their are many choices.

I have ate at this restaurant many times over the past 15 years, It was one of my favorites in the town of Portales, but I ate here last week when I came into town and was disappointed, I had the chicken fried steak, which was smaller than usual and just not that great for some reason, my potatoes were blah and my roll was almost rock solid, I would not serve a roll like that to someone. Overall the restaurant just wasnt the same, not very many people in there either, I hear its under new ownership so that may be it.

The service is hit-or-miss. Some days you can get a server worth tipping ten dollars, other days you'll get one that looks at you with a blank stare on her face when you ask her the time. The food is OK, definitely some things on the menu not worth ordering. Atmosphere is great for family's, not sure the prices are, though.
