I was in Portales on business from New York State. All these good ratings are right on. Steak fingers! Have never seen this and loved it. Good fries, very good cole slaw and roll. Gravy to die for. Very friendly staff. Quick service. Inexpensive. Even a drive through. Wish I could take this place home. Man, that gravy!
BEST STEAK FINGERS EVER! If you like chicken fried steak ... you will love chicken fried steak fingers, basically chicken fried steak that is chopped into a finger food, that you can dip into your gravy. *yum* The food is fresh ... and just really delicious.. definitely a must try, if you are ever in Portales,New mexico.
Stopped at McCarty's yesterday for lunch. The food was very good We both had taco salads, which were only average in content, but tasty. Service friendly. No atmosphere.

My friends finally one of these small town restaurants live up to all the hype! With my standards being high and well traveled this place has great greenchile cheeseburgers! The tacoquitos are just as I grew up just like tastee Frezee. The Cyclones especially the Almond joy one is amazing. Thank you for living up to the hype! This is the best place in town all others have failed!
Besides the brewery, this is the only restaurant I miss in Portales! The shakes are heavenly. They are unlike anything I've ever had. I'm lactose intolerant but they don't make me sick. Soy milk? Who cares? Even if they made me sick they would still be worth it. My favorite was the chocolate and peanut butter. Worth it every time.... + I once tried the grilled chicken salad. It took forever to make and they forgot the dressing but it was still good. + The cheeseburger was so good...and it comes with a baggie of fritos. Only in New Mexico could you get away with that BUT you can order a side of chili and dip it in. MMMM...This might be part of the reason I gained ten pounds. Opps.
The first place I found here to eat that has not been a disapointment.I just moved here a month ago.I heard the locals get mad when people compare their restaurants to big city restaurants.Well, too bad lol.Cant always have only local people doing the ratings.I am writing this review for the new people in the area.I will admit,I wasn't expecting much considering that the outside looked like a shack lol.The cyclones (ice cream mixed with candy) are awesome, the taquitos were probably the best I have had and the green chili burgers were pretty good as well.Prices are also very resonable.I can't wait to go back and try more items on the menu! Service is a little slow, but it's because they make everything fresh.

Awesome family restaurant in Portales. The butterfly shrimp were good, though the popcorn shrimp were not. The sides were good and plentiful. The salad bar is very good and has plenty of variety. The beer is cold, and the service was excellent. My only complaint is that there are only TVs in the bar area, though maybe that's a good thing because people will actually talk to each other more. Anyway, a very good place to go for dinner if you find yourself in Portales.
Mark's has the best steak fingers and onion rings in town. I've had almost all of their menu and enjoyed everything.
Stopped in here for dinner once, then took my class there for lunch a couple of times. Atmosphere: It is part of a strip mall, but parking was never an issue. It may not look like much from the outside, but was quite nice on the inside. There's no doubt that there is a country vibe to the place. It is very small with a limited amount of seating (biggest table has 6 seats). However, it was never full, so we never had an issue getting a table. Staff: The staff was always friendly and helpful. They were polite, professional, and ensured we always had full glasses. They were kind enough to provide us drinks to go. Food: If they would have had the steak I wanted on my first visit, this place might have earned that last star, but they were out. I tried something different each time I went there and each selection was fresh, cooked as expected, and tasted good. I never had enough room for dessert, though it always looked good in the display case. Overall, this is a very good restaurant with very good prices. Even though I'm not a local, I felt comfortable here thanks to the staff.

We came to the conclusion that the only reason this place is still around, is because it's so dang expensive and there is no competition. This is not your regular steakhouse. When we first were being seated, we followed the hostess to 3 empty booths, all three were filled with crumbs. She had us sit at a table, while she went in the back to get a sanitizer rag to wipe down a booth. After a not-so-great wipe down, she put our menus on the table and said, "Here." Then she moved to the other dirty booths to wipe down. We sat down and waited....we had waited 10 minutes for a waitress, no one even looked in our direction for us to get someone's attention. Our hostess came back and asked if we had been helped, which was painfully obvious because we had an empty table, no bread, no waters. So she took our drink order and we waited for even longer to be brought our drinks. Our hostess, ended up being our waitress for the night. My steak was over-cooked, for a steakhouse, you would think they would know how to make a steak properly. I asked for my mashed potatoes with gravy on the side, there was slopped gravy all over my plate onto my steak. My boyfriends salad (from the salad bar) had the longest black hair in it, mind you he has a shaved head and I am blonde. When the waitress came back to pick up our plates, she asked if there was anything wrong, I told her there was a hair in his food and she just snatched the plate and carried on. No apology. To top it all off, our beers were warm. They are lousy and a very poor ran business. Disaster was written all over the managers face. Maybe it was a bad night for them, but as this was a first experience here, we will not be coming back, so we will never know if it was an off night, or poor restaurant. Cleanliness was also an issue. Not just because the tables were not wiped down, but because I was crunching food from my table to the salad bar with every step, the salad bar needed to be wiped down, window guards needed a good cleaning, just a very dusty feeling all around. My advice, don't waste your time or money.
Traveling through Portales NM on business. Saw this place online and it looked like a good option in a town without many choices. Well I was hoping that a local steakhouse would be a good experience. Sad to say but a national chain would have been better. Salad bar is nice. I was eating my salad when my dinner came out. My wine had not even arrived yet. Ordered a ribeye, medium. Cut into the middle to check and it was fine. This was absolutely the toughest ribeye I have ever had though. When I got to the one end, it was not remotely medium. The end was bleeding. The baked potato was dry. For what I paid, I expected better. If by some odd chance I happen to come through Portales again I won't stop here. Doubtful I would try any of their other locations either.
So the salad bar has a great selection and is unlimited which is nice but to be honest no one goes to a steak place for the salad I had the 10oz ribeye and for 25$ I could have bought the family pack of ribeyes from Walmart! Disappointed to say the least

Pretty good for fast food Mexican. I had the New Mexicali beef taco salad and a small beef quesadilla. The taco salad was fresh and came with refried beans, black olives, tomatoes, cheese, and roasted green chiles, and the lettuce was crisp and fresh. The fried taco shell bowl was tasty. The salad is large and covers up an entire paper plate. It comes with Taco Box salsa in a cup that was tasty. The beef quesadilla was just ok. The taco salad was more than I needed for lunch. It was clean inside and they were busy at lunch.
Just got a steak and potato burrito at Taco Box...and paid over $4. The main ingredient was the tortilla...the "steak" was some form of meat but had no flavor at all. The potatoes tasted like they were frozen or out of a box. The whole thing was DRY. Save your money for Juanito's or even the deli at the grocery store.
Who wouldn't want to try a taco place that's local, has a line of cars waiting in the drive-thru and has a billboard sign advertising $1.00 tacos?! Count me in. As an avid "Yelper," I'm pretty ashamed that I didn't even check Yelp before I went to order my meal... My first experience here was OK. I ordered the chicken taco salad bowl and I suppose I had some pretty high expectations. The deep fried taco bowl was everything I had hoped for and more. It was crispy, just greasy enough and tasty. Probably the best non-stale taco bowl I've ever had; however... the actual salad part of this taco SALAD was mediocre at best. The taco salad bowl contained an "ice cream scoop-worth" of diced chicken (not much), and there was no sour cream on it (in the picture at the drive thru the bowl looks filled with ingredients), the extra guac I paid for seemed like a small dollop, not to mention the limited amount of tomatoes and olives. C'mon now, if I specifically order EXTRA guac, don't hold back! So basically the salad consisted of shredded lettuce dotted with olives, and spotted with tomatoes and some cheese. You disappointed me Taco Box. I really wanted to like you! I wonder if there's a way I can just go back for the crispy taco bowl.... it's good y'all... but the salad could use some improvement. jus'sayin.. Since I'm a fan of 2nd chances and now that I've looked at other Yelp Reviews, I suppose the next time I go I'll try the pig in a poncho (I have no idea what that is still), the chile relleno burrito and the vanilla coke. Until next time... **update** The Green Chile burger is excellent. Nice and spicy with just enough heat and the burgers are grilled fresh when you order.

Thai City

I was a fan of the original restaurant in Clovis, NM...and was pleased that a version of it was coming to Portales. The quality of the food is good...well seasoned, hot, and good portions. Prices are reasonable...often I get two meals from a single plate...so the food is a good deal. The issue that will determine whether Thai City makes it will be staffing. The wait staff is just average...and the last time I was in the resturant...the floors were sticky...very sticky. I want the business to succeed, but the managers MUST have quality control or folks in Portales will begin talking about the Thai place that USED to be in the old Dairy Queen.
Oh wow. Ever since I moved from a big city with a variety of ethnic foods, I have been searching for a place to fulfill my Asian-food cravings in P-town. I'd been hearing about the hype of a "new Thai restaurant" coming to town and I finally had a chance to try Thai City today for lunch. It's always a good sign when the Sunday church crowd files into a restaurant for lunch. The place was packed yet the service was pretty quick. Looking through the menu and seeing all the different options I already knew this place would be my new "go-to" restaurant. The prices are reasonable for the most part ranging from about $1-$9 for starters to about $30 for the more expensive Japanese selections. The average amount runs between $7.99-$12.00 for a majority of the entrees on the menu. Not bad. Back home, I love eating Pho (Vietnamese rice noodle soup with beef slices and beef meatballs). In fact, there are restaurants that are dedicated to making all different kinds of Pho. Nonetheless, I was pretty excited to see that Thai City had beef Pho on the menu under "chef's specials." Of course, I ordered pho and my boyfriend ordered the Pad Thai with beef. For our appetizer, we ordered the chicken satay with peanut sauce. All three items came out within 10-15 minutes and the dishes were steaming hot! The chicken satay pieces were tender and had that nice char for added flavor. The peanut sauce was sweet and I added a little Siracha hot sauce to make it spicy. Yum. The Beef Pad Thai was a portion size fit for two but of course, my boyfriend ate the whole thing. The Pho was a piping hot bowl of noodle soup and the broth was pretty savory. Add in some bean sprouts, jalapeno slices and squeeze a little lime and you'll have a delicious meal. So far so good. Thai City's wide selection of Thai, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine in one little restaurant is truly a great addition to Portales. The only con about this restaurant is that I noticed a lot of rice on the floor, under tables, on the seats of chairs... nothing that can't be remedied. I love food as much as I like to eat at clean restaurants and I'd just hate for the cleanliness of this place to be a turn-off for future customers. Perhaps cleaning up the floors after every party leaves will help keep this place a nice shiny gem in Portales. A pro about Thai City is that they offer dine-in or carry-out. Pretty convenient for those of us with on-the-go schedules. Overall, my experience was great and I'll be back very, very soon. Thanks Thai City!
Sad. Before I begin, mind you I ordered take out & they can't even get that right. Food is ok but some of their employees can't even take orders right. I ordered chicken pho & combination fried rice. I got home & discovered that they gave me beef pho & meatballs. They got the combo fried rice right but they poured chillies all over the rice. I drove back to the restaurant & explained the problem to the same employee that checked me out (probably the same one who took my order over the phone). She took the styrofoam filled food & walked away w/ it. No apologies, no nothing. I hate incompetent people. All their employees are idiots, except for one.

This used to be one of my favorite places. They have gone downhill for some time now. I went today because I had a gift certificate and figured I might as well use. I ordered the "chicken" Alfredo. 12.95 for the noodles and $2.00 extra if you want chicken. It was a small bowl of barely warm noodles with strips of parts of parts chicken that was COLD. Cold bread sticks and wilted salad!! I hope I don't have any friends that want to go there because I never want to eat there again!!! And by the way....this is no longer an Italian Restaurant!!
I was going to try Vines tonight at the recommendation of the hotel clerk. Walked in and there was only one customer at 7pm. No staff to be found. Poked around a few moments. No one showed up. Walked out. Wasn't looking very promising!
We moved to Portales for work, and we go out every Friday. This was a nice change. We walked in and two men greeted us right away. Our waiter was Robert, if I remember correctly. He was so very nice! And helped us with the menu. We all could not decide what to order because everything sounded so wonderful. This has to be the nicest restaurant in Portales. We will definitely be going back, we haven't found a restaurant here that we liked as much as Vines.

They were Closing down 30 minutes early which made my order take longer to make. It appeared the manager was sitting at the table doing paperwork so it was ok that staff was closing down early so customer service is not important here. I asked for one line of mustard and instesd the sandwich was drowned in it. Thankfully I was just passing through and dont have to order here all the time. I love my hometown Subway.
