REALLY REALLY delicious! REALLY REALLY fresh! The buffet is simple. The salad bar is small, but what they offer is garden-fresh ingredients. It's not the quantity but the QUALITY that we love! The green beans? REALLY REALLY awesome! I don't eat the pizza but my family loves it! :) Great job Tomato Cafe!

If you like eating cardboard - this is the place for you. I have no idea how long the food was staged awaiting me, a hapless soul, to select my piece of cardboard for sustenance! This isn't a tasty cardboard but akin to your 6 month old box of cheereos which has collected dust then cut into deceiving wedges and topped with un-inspired ingredients. Service - what is that? The staff may great you but try to get a refill on your drink... may as well get it yourself. Even if you have grown tired of the ubiquitous Dion's fare, I would not step into this "café" for variety. Poor service and food make for a dismal dining experience!

Salad, soup, pizza pasta. What is there not to like??? I thought this place was very good bang for the buck. At $8.49 for lunch buffet, this was a bargain. The greens for the salad were very fresh, and even the torn up spinach wasn't mushed up. The toppings were also very fresh. What i really liked was the dressing choices. I had to have several servings so I could try them all!!! Yummy. The soups were very, very tasty. I think there was a chicken noodle and a tomato vegetable soup. The pizzas were smaller pieces. I appreciate that also, as an excuse to take several different varieties. The pasta was well done al dente. The different sauces again were a convenient excuse to try them all. I think I must have eaten more than $8.45!!!! Good, clean, friendly, delicious. Too bad it is not in my home town. Yelp 365 Challenge: 55/365

A wonderfully warm and cheerful ambience for young and old. Locally owned. The salad bar, pizza and pasta are always fresh and well prepared. What I love is the creamy polenta and the sautéed green beans. The concept is an Italian Food bar and the food, service and the space are so much more inviting than any similar place in town. A great addition to the menu is the homemade Tiramisu and the espresso bar. Skip the ice cream and order the Tiramisu for your table. You won't regret it.

The food is ok... the price is right if you have a huge appetite, but don't go unless you're starving. I think it would be good for sports teams, etc. The salad is fresh, the pizza is a little greasy and the crust isn't great. That said, I still like the bread sticks that were from the same crust. The pasta is ok too. There's a variety of sauces. The raviolis are good too. They also have vanilla and chocolate ice cream. with syrups and sprinkles.

Freshest food buffet I've been to in Albuquerque and it was tasty. Especially enjoyed the veggie pizza with a little Marinara sauce to dip the crust in. Pizzas are thin crust, and several pasta sauces and salad choices. Service was friendly and the restaurant clean. The Arnold Palmer was fairly artificial tasting so I'll stick to water next time. Location and parking a bit of a mess, but what doesn't have that problem along the Paseo food corridor?

Had read some reviews and figured it was worth a shot, since hubby is a big fan of Italian and Olive Garden was getting old. lol We went for lunch today and after buffet price ($9.49) plus beverages ($2.49), with tip, lunch was $29. For $29 for lunch, I guess my expectations weren't met. The place was clean, however, and the staff was very helpful. The salad portion of the buffet was very minimal, the pasta was pretty basic (and raviolis and all-beef meatballs are apparently only served for dinner). There was a decent variety of pasta sauces (4 or 5), a couple of soups (the veggie posole was very good). The pizza I tried (veggie pesto) was my favorite item, next to the posole. What bummed me out was that the garlic green beans were obviously frozen, not fresh produce...and I would have appreciated some fruit or some basic dessert item on the buffet (tiramisu was offered for $4.99). But if you want to improve what you offer your patrons, I would never serve frozen veggies. would rather serve none at all...and some basic fruit or dessert item would be appropriate. $29 for two for lunch is just not worth it to us. We really wanted to like it. :(

The Tomato Cafe used to be one of my faves, so I chose to go there for Mother's Day today. What a disappointment. It was fast food quality. My pizza was cold, the polenta was watery, and the salad bar had about 5 items. The garlic green beans were too salty to eat. Servers were nice but slow. We saw others complaining about their food, too. And the tab for all of this was over $40 for 3 people. Won't go back.

I'm traveling for work and staying around the corner from Tomato Cafe. I considered going to Jason's deli because I'm gluten free and figured a salad bar would work best for dinner tonight. Tomato Cafe is in the same shopping center and I decided to look them up before I made a decision. Boy, am I glad I did! Their website is handy, gives you all the information you need about the restaurant: what's on the food bar, prices, and highlighted the most important thing I was looking for, gluten free (well, and the fact that they have a wine selection; beer too but I had to give that up because of the gluten). The staff greeted me as soon as I walked in, asked me if I'd been before, and proceeded to tell me all about the restaurant. I was seated and the server came out immediately with a glass of water, asked again if I'd been there, and then asked if I was gluten free. Wow. I told her yes, so she pointed out exactly what was on the buffet that was safe for me. Every item is clearly labeled and if gluten free, labeled with a GF. I also learned that they can make any pizza into a personal gluten free pizza for $1.49! I enjoyed the green beans (they were quite tasty), tried the polenta (it wasn't for me, but wasn't bad at all), soup (both were GF), and salad bar (I have to say, it could have had a few more veggies to select from, but there were lots of dressings to choose and all were GF). I decided to order a GF pizza, it came out within 6 minutes, and was super tasty. My waitress kept my water glass filled, took away plates as I finished, and offered to box up my leftover pizza (I wasn't sure if they'd let me take it home, considering it was a buffet, but now I have 3 slices of pizza in my hotel fridge waiting for a midnight snack). I got a small cup of the soft serve (lactose intolerant friendly) ice cream, and finished up my house wine. The restaurant was clean, service was exceptional, food was fresh, and I saw several families there and the kids seemed very happy. I even saw a couple on their laptop (free wifi) and they looked to be camped out (made several trips back to the buffet while I was there and were not rushed by staff). I commented on the great GF options and the server said "she takes that very seriously." She is obviously the owner and it's clear that she is very involved in the running of her business. Family owned and it shows. If I lived here, I'd visit Tomato Cafe often. If I have a reason to come back to Albuquerque for work again, I'll make it a point to visit.

We LOVE pasta. But everything always looks so good on menus. I have the hardest time deciding what kind of pasta with what kind of sauce...then the pizza always looks good. Italian restaurants are the hardest for me to go to, SO MANY DECISIONS. That is where Tomato Cafe comes in. A food bar full of deliciousness! Small, but just enough. A few pasta choices with about 7 sauce choices. And fresh pizza. Even a small salad station. Not overwhelming, but enough combination choices to make me very happy! There are even multiple gluten free dishes to choose from. They were moderately busy this afternoon. Not sure if we even had a server, but our dirty plates were removed and our waters refilled often enough. The only minor issue was the pizza. There was enough space for 8 pizzas, but only 4 of them were being used. And of those 4, there were but 2 or 3 slices. I would have liked a bigger selection, but I didn't need it. Spent $20 for the two of us to over indulge on yummy food. We will definitely be back. Also...they are locally owned, and a sign out front says that they donate unused food at the end of every day.

I'm giving the Tomato Cafe an overall rating of 5 stars for a number of reasons. 1st, considering it is a buffet style restaurant, the food is fresh and obviously made with quality ingredients. 2nd, the establishment is clean and very family friendly. I have two little ones and given the choice they choose Tomato Cafe 10 times out of 10. 3rd, the owner is super friendly and engaging, but not overwhelmingly. Loves the little ones and they enjoy when she comes around with her tomato stamp. 4th, they have a wine selection to compliment the Italian-American cuisine. 5th, there is chocolate and vanilla soft serve for dessert! 6th, there is chocolate and vanilla soft serve for dessert! I should also note that I read some of the more , what I would consider, unfairly negative reviews and would advise first timers to remember that this is a family friendly buffet style restaurant with quality ingredients. If you are looking for a more traditional pizza or pasta experience you can undoubtedly find one in Albuquerque. Keeping that in mind I see no reason to give this establishment unfairly base and judgmental reviews. Furthermore, did I mention that there is chocolate and vanilla soft serve for dessert?

Check in for a free bottomless drink, worth $2.49. This place is great for families. The pricing is tiered, based on the kids' ages. You can eat healthfully or you can stuff yourself with pasta and pizza. Everything is good and fresh--especially the salad; great salad bar. I like their meatballs and sauce. There's a frozen yogurt machine that offers chocolate, vanilla, or a swirl and you can drizzle chocolate or butterscotch sauce over the top. It seems like they advertise it as (or used to) lactose free, which is a little strange since they serve pizza with cheese, but whatever. Really, no complaints. The service can be a little spotty sometimes, but even then it's not that bad. We usually spend around $40-$50 for a family of 4, so it's not the cheapest meal in town (particularly because if we go, it tends to be on a Saturday for lunch).

This place is REALLY good. They have a buffet-type setup with salad, soup, pizza, and pasta. Everything that I have tried here is delicious. The only downside is that it is a bit pricey. For a family of four, expect to pay about $40 including a tip. Other than that, this place is great!

Great place to eat. They have a little bit of everything! Pasta, soup, salads, and of course pizza! Come in the evening for dinner and they yummy ravioli too. Staff is very nice and the place is very clean too!

Staff are nice, kids are welcome, food is constantly good. I only give 4 stars because they water down their alfredo and cheese sauces. I was almost sure about this, then today I watched the chef guy pour hot water into the sauce. I would love it and be back more except for this.

UPDATE: I am downgrading my review of this place due to the consistently poor, slow service. I know - it's a buffet right? You'd think service doesn't matter. But it does and here's why. You can't get your drinks (even water) or your check without a wait person. And the servers are slow, disinterested, and frankly downright worthless most of the time. I continue to come to this place hoping that one day I will get a good server. So far - it's never happened. I'm dropping it from my favorites list. -------- Italian pizza and salad bar buffet - midrange to high priced but the pizza is delicious. There are vegetarian options which I like. The service can be very iffy. I'd probably give them 3.5 stars if I could. One day you get a very attentive server - the next - kids more interested in hooking up than bringing you drinks. The dinner is slightly expanded and includes more pasta options. The soups are very well done. All the food tastes fresh and good. One other small complaint is that the menu NEVER changes. It's the same thing EVERY TIME YOU GO! So I don't go THAT often because I know it will always be the same choices. If they offered slightly more salad toppings, changed out the pizza type more often, and did away with the servers and let you get your drinks self-serve, this could easily be a five star place.

My boss brought us here for a reward lunch and my initial reaction was "Is our company in trouble?" I thought the salad portion of the buffet was missing a few basic fix-in's. The pizza was alright. Nothing to write home about. I really liked the pasta bar. I think that made the meal. The soft serve machine offered vanilla, chocolate and swirl. Very standard. If you seek simplicity, eat here. If you are looking for something to tantalize your taste buds, pick another venue.

Great people and great food! We walked into the place packed with the football team. The staff kept the food flowing and the atmosphere upbeat even though very busy. Don't miss coming here when you are in town! Thanks, Deb, awesome owner. Thanks, John, awesome manager. Thanks to all the great staff. Refreshing to have great tasting, non greasy, pizza with a delicious crust. Wonderful pasta and best of all...the green beans! Don't skimp out and make sure to try the tiramisu!

Our group was pleasantly surprised at the variety of food. Everything was fresh hot and simply delicous. The service was excellent. We highly recommend it and will be repeat customers. Delicious freshly made and better than homemade! !

Before I begin my review I feel it is only fair to state that I'm not a huge fan of budget or mid-range Italian food - if I'm going to eat it, it is generally going to be the fancy schmancy stuff. Mostly that's because of the same reasons I wasn't blown away by Tomato Cafe. Another reviewer mentioned that the food was cardboardy... and I wouldn't say that he was completely wrong. In fact, the pizza was quite shameful... hardly worthy of being called pizza. The pasta and meatballs, on the other hand, were decent and at least had fair texture and flavor. Was the food edible? Sure. Was it delicious? Not really. The real problem lies in the rest of the story. You see, the buffet was $11 or so + drinks. That's pretty steep for a plateful or two of food I didn't really enjoy. But even that I can kind of justify because theoretically I could have eaten a lot (I didn't) and so the price might have been justified. What tips this place into the 2-star category is the fact that the service was terrible. The first thing our waiter did was complain that he was overworked (dude, it's a freaking buffet - all you do is fill drinks!!) and then never bothered to check in on us or actually fill our drinks until we were about to leave. Then when we got our checks he pulled a very tacky no-no and picked up our paid checks before we left the table because he wanted to go home. Seriously?? Looking back at it, I wish I wouldn't have tipped (yes, I know that that is a mortal sin in the Yelp community). Anyways, go here if you don't expect much out of your meal or service. The only thing I can really say about my trip here was that the company I ate with was enjoyable. Had it not been for eating with friends this would have been a 1-star review.

Good food, poor service! Mariela brought us our check 15 minutes before we were done! Assumed my daughter was 5 and charged us for the more expensive meal at first. I guess if she would have stopped by our table before hand she could have taken the time to find out. No tip! Earn your keep, I do.

An Albuquerque original. The concept is pretty simple: Italian food buffet. You've got salads and soups, pizzas, and pastas. Also, veggies. They make sure to offer vegetarian options of everything, and even have gluten-free things as well. For the adults (or at least those over 21) they have beer and wine available. Service was excellent, even though the place was pretty busy. Expect two major demographics here: families with kids, and poor/hungry students. For ~$10 you can feed a person all they can eat, so it makes sense.

My FAVORITE restaurant in Albuquerque. I have been coming here for YEARS with my family and even though I've moved away, I still come back to visit every time. It's a simple buffet, but its sooo good. The owner is super friendly and always there to greet you, help out behind the buffet, and check on you during your meal. They will make you any pizza if you request it which is so nice. The buffet has pretty much been the same since I first started going there and I'm completely fine with that!

Fantastic! Service with an exceptional smile, done right with basic, tasty ingredients. The salad was fresh and crisp. Pizza was good, pastas were properly cooked and the sauces were all top notch. Drinks were very reasonable and the kids left happy. We walked in with a supervisor greeting us with an open door, and left with the owner giving our kids hand-stamps and smiles. We will be back! Everyone of the staff was friendly and happy. The establishment is kept VERY clean and the buffet is never sloppy. Neighborhood prices on alcohol and sippy cups for the kids makes for happy parents. I love great customer service and love being a valued customer.

Some reviewers seem down on Tomato Cafe, but I like the place. Buffet-style dining with salad, soups, multiple pizzas, pastas, sauces, and veggies. But the food quality is gourmet-level and the prices are surprisingly good for what you get (Adults $8.49 lunch or $10.49 dinner; kids $5). It's quick, the food is excellent and you don't break the bank. Plus the place is spotless. What, exactly, is not to like? Salad - Not a huge variety of toppings, but the greens are crisp and unwilted, and everything is super fresh and ripe, including the namesake tomatoes. And they offer a fine choice of dressings, including some interesting vinaigrettes. My salad was most excellent. To the people who complained about variety, the name of the place is not "Tomato's Salad Bar Extravaganza." If you really must have your baby corns, go to Wendy's. Pizza - Thin crust, very high quality and delicious. Replenished often so very fresh Pasta - Not my thing in general, but several choices with multiple sauces; Definitely not the "out of the box" style; The meatballs were homemade and fantastic - I ate these as a separate side dish Homemade Soups - I tried the vegetarian posole and tomato-basil. Both were excellent but I especially enjoyed the posole - who knew it could be so good w/o the pork? Veggies - steamed broccoli was perfectly cooked; garlic string beans were phenomenal (if you like garlic) And one more thing: any place that can please both me and my picky daughters with exactly the same selection gets a thumbs up any day!

We've been following Tomato Cafe around for a while, to all its various locations. I think I like this newest location the best. I've been coming for my birthday for the past few years. I like the openness of the restaurant. It isn't too stuffy and the food is good. They have a big buffet with different sections; salad, pizza, pasta, sauces and veggies. I am a huge fan of the Greek salad dressing. I like the saltiness and tanginess. I even dip my pizza crust in it! The salad bar is just pizza toppings plus lettuce. I don't mind. They are fresh and crisp, which is more than I can say for places like Sizzler that pride themselves on their salad bars. The vegetarian posole is my favorite. I love the beans and hominy combination. The tomato basil soup is usually good, too. I only really ever eat the pepperoni pizza, but they have several kinds. The veggie pizza is just blah, however. The pastas are not overcooked, nor gummy. There are several good sauces, most tomato based. I tried an artichoke sausage one the other day that was delicious. In the same section, there are green beans and broccoli, along with some ravioli and meatballs. I like all of it, except the meatballs, which I think have a strange texture. Everyone else loves, them, however. The servers are always attentive and are good about clearing plates and refilling drinks. I will continue to go back, year after year. (As long as I can find them!)

We've been going here for YEARS and have never not had a problem with the food until this past weekend. The pizza was old, the green beans were withered and tasted like they were from an industrial bag of frozen food, the salad was dry. Even if the salad is bagged and "prewashed" you still need to wash the lettuce! Service was non existent. Done with this place. It's time for the owner to get a new hobby.

  • Mitch G.

I think this place was better by a little then I expected. The food seemed to be pretty fresh. The salad bar items were crisp and there was a decent selection of veggies. Most importantly there was none of the dreaded Ice Berg anywhere. As for the pizza, it was decent, not great but not horrible either. The pasta was pasta nothing spectacular there. it was nice that they had a Whole Wheat one also. The I believe five sauces were good not home made good but okay. Overall I might visit this place once every 2-3 months if I lived here. Price wise I think it is a little expensive but that is because this town has some of the cheapest eats of anywhere in the nation. If you want Mexican/New Mexican style food you are going to pay around $5-8 for dinner per person. This was $11.

  • Michael K.

I'm a vegetarian and I don't eat flesh of any kind, not even shellfish. This is a disclaimer. The salad bar was paltry. I expected 20 feet. This is 3 feet. The main course was various pizzas, probably 7 - all thin crust and the usual combos. The vegetarian model was a joke and cold. Pastas were the other main course and it was good. Pick from 3 pastas (spaghetti, linguini and rottinni (?)) and dip the sauce you like from 5 choices. I chose linguini and the roasted eggplant sauce. It was nice enough. The dessert was a bummer. An ice-cream machine barely cranked out the worst ice-ice flavored vanilla cream. There was butterscotch and Hersheys for a topping and that was it, a lonely ice generating machine in the corner. The price of $8.49 plus overly priced iced tea at $2.25 meant I spent over $11 for a quick lunch. The service was exceptional though and I spent another $2 for that so nearly $14 puts me at a very decent restaurant for lunch, otherwise.

This place is awesome, the food is fresh and very tasty. The atmosphere is very warm and friendly. The staff keeps the restaurant very clean. The pasta sauces are made in house. The 3 soups they have are all made in house, and very good. I'm not a big fan of meatballs but the ones there aren't to bad, everyone else seams to love them. Anytime I have been in there seams to be families there, kids love this place. If you go in on your birthday you can get either a free rootbeer float or Italian soda. They have a good selection of red and white wines, and beer. The homemade tiramisu is fantastic, they also have garlic green beans they too are fantastic. The servers are very friendly and nice, they do a fantastic job of keeping the drinks filled and plates cleaned. It is a must try when in the area. Don't let the reports about traffic being bad in the area do to construction stop you. Traffic is not as bad as reported. It is worth it.

We brought a group of 50 youth runners and their families to Tomato Cafe the night before a big race and the restaurant was perfect. The food on the buffet was simple, fresh, healthy, and replenished continuously. The buffet offers a tremendous value for the price. Everyone was seated and fed within 90 minutes. Deb, the manager, accommodated all of our needs, even making a special order of green beans to meet the gluten-free needs of one diner. The restaurant itself is modern, clean, convenient to the freeway, and has a huge parking lot. I can't recommend Tomato Cafe more highly for families.

The pizza was okay. The BBQ chicken pizza was disgusting and I couldn't even finish my slice but the other other slices I had were decent enough. The pasta was okay. I just wish there was more of a variety.

I once went to a restaurant called Platanos and was told that they were out of plantains. Tomato cafe had tomatoes but they were not so good. I started with a salad, the salad bar was pretty fresh, but there were only about a dozen items, including dressing. The tomato basil fat free dressing was way too sweet and pretty much rendered my salad inedible. Pazole soup was next. The soup was actually very tasty (I'm a pazole virgin though), nice and spicy, but I was not a huge fan of the actual pazoles. I did appreciate that it was vegetarian. Then I moved on to pizza. I recognize I am in Albuquerque and not in Italy, so I will say that the vegetarian pizza was pretty good, except the crust was dense and hard. If it had been any thicker, I wouldn't have eaten it. Pasta, I tried the green chile alfredo sauce - it was barely spicy.and not too alfredo-ey. The pasta was well done though, not too soft as one would expect at a buffet. By the time I got to the veggies I had much lower expectations. The broccoli was really mushy and over done, and the alleged garlic butter sauce was not detectable by my palate. The garlic green beans were tasty, but the beans weren't fresh, tasted like warmed up frozen. You'd do better going to whole foods to get a salad and some other prepared goodies... and at $11 a head, it wasn't even that cheap.

The bright colors of the food let you know how fresh the food is. My family always wants to go for the meatballs, fresh green beans, and the bbq pizza! I love the neighborhood feel of the restaurant and that it has a local owner.

This is a great, family friendly place for a healthy variety of good food in a very family friendly environment. There is a salad bar, pizza bar (much better and fresher than most pizza bars) and pasta bar. It is a serious cut above the standard teen pizza place. Wine by the glass is a good sign. You and your kids will love it for dinner and it makes a nice lunch as well. ts hard to take your posole review seriously from a virgin, but Linda is if right-that is great vegetarian posole (that Z spelling is not so common in New Mexico). I do wish the meatballs were all beef instead of beef/pork.

great breadsticks and pasta and green beans! you can see the food prepared behind the buffet which is comforting!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
