This is a pretty nice restaurant with a surf and turf menu. The food is good and also includes an unlimited salad bar. But food is not the reason I go there. It's the salsa dancing! They have live bands Thursday through Sunday. Even if you don't dance salsa, it's amazing to watch the pros doing their stuff. Several of the local salsa classes meet here for their practice lesson. Fun! PS: If you want to people watch instead of dance, I recommend you cradle a drink and act drunk. Otherwise, someone invariably will come and ask you to dance.

Honestly, I've lived in ABQ for years. Steaks are mediocre at best but great salad bar. If you're going there for after dinner entertainment, like the fabulous bands they offer, beware that they charge a cover charge, which isn't bad at $5 p/p, but they do charge for WATER, even if you have spent $$$ on drinks. This alone is outrageous! So much for trying to be a responsible driver by sobering up first.

The food is good. The inside is dated, in the sense that it can use some renovation.

Since I had not been to the Cooperage in over 7 years, I was looking forward to the return. Unforgettably, I was very disappointed. As I never base my opinion solely on environment; I did take notice while waiting for my party (on an overly uncomfortable sofa) that the staff were young, unprofessional, and the decor was extremely dated. I felt this was a little strange for a restaurant with such a high reputation in the community, but stayed for dinner. The bread was quite delicious, and a good thing too, because when the entrees came out. I dove into more bread. Their steaks were tough and overcooked, the $42 Lobster was like chewing rubber (my 19 year old cousin wouldn't even finish it, and he enjoys McD's chicken nuggets), and the $12 endless Salad Bar looked like it came from JB's in 1984 (Come on, seriously, in 2012 you think you can dump bad veggies on the informed and healthy youth?). Overall, the five of us spent $200 (Alcohol = 2 glasses of wine + 1 beer) for a meal that was at the quality of Denny's on central. If the Cooperage does not improve, their customer base (being the elderly with a serious lack of taste buds) will disappear within a few years.

We went at lunch. The food was decent to poor, but also quite cheap compared to the dinners. No one's food was prepared correctly. The service is what makes it a 2-star review. Slow and unfriendly. The much-hyped salad bar was the highlight of the meal, and while good, not anything spectacular.

It was like watching a bad old movie with an outdated menu.

Kitchy, but worth it, the Cooperage is a fine "old style" steak house. It's an unbelievably good value, as well! The sheer volume of food that's included in the dinner price is astounding. (In a good way!) If I remember correctly, included in the price of a dinner entree (i.e. steak) is the salad bar, soup, potato, and bread service. And the entrees are good! The steak and prime rib that I've had were delicious and well prepared. The interior is round (like a barrel! cooperage! hah! get it?!?) and that actually does lend to a sense of privacy. You don't see a big, empty room full of tables, so you won't necessarily know whether the house is busy or not while you're there. I remember that a lot of the lights had wrought iron and amber glass shades that looked like something STRAIGHT out of 1980. Pretty retro, but not in an ironic or run down way. Just unchanged by the passage of time. The soup and salad bar is plentiful ... though some of the items included are Jello and suspiciously ambrosia-like substances. The decor clearly hasn't been updated in a my lifetime. It's the kind of place my dad and granddad would really, really like. The tableware reminds me of what Denny's used to carry when I was in high school. The service is pretty good (attentive, quick with refills, good with special requests). The prices are exceptionally modest and the food is plentiful. Overall, I think the Cooperage is an exceptional value and I look forward to my next visit!
