They got better at taking orders, so I´m updating my earlier review. Food is great and I see the service has improved.

Poor management today. Everyone getting wrong order including myself, people complaining about their food, trash overflowing, so called fake margarita, very disorganized, asking what you ordered even after placing the order. Not recommended. Had to ask 3 times to get my drink order. Won't be going back.

Prices are super cheap at Taco Cabana. Homemade tortillas. As a vegetarian, I felt there was a good amount of items to choose from on the menu. Wasn't super in love with their refried beans. I ordered their bean and cheese burrito. Not bad. Here is my minus 1 stars justification. Okay what is up with this salsa bar located right in the middle of the waiting area? It is like asking for a fight to break out. I had the hardest time trying to maneuver around, just to fill up my salsa cups. Plus I think if the cups were located on both sides of the oasis, it would make it a little less crazy. Since I'm just a visitor, I had to try the red cream soda. It tasted like I was drinking candy. Wish I was able to try out their horchata, but just one stomach. If I were a cow it would be another story.

Always good - Clean and with the new remodel it's super nice spot for a quick lunch! Best fresh salsa bar around!

Their food keeps my 80 year grandma's appetite. The refried beans are most exceptional!!! They have a great verity of Mexican Food and order anyway you want.

I came here after a movie and it has become one of my favorite places to sit back and relax. They offer free wifi, but I couldn't connect to their router, so we'll see if it actually is true. The food was good and I have a new love for their pico de gallo. Although, I only eat the bean and cheese nachos here, I can only comment on it and I like it. Try it out, and definitely try their pico de gallo. =)

Whenever I am back in town, I love me some Taco Cabana! Their big fluffy homemade flour tortillas are a huge draw for me. My staple is the Eggs Mexicana. It comes with green chile, eggs, refried beans, cheese, and the world's best BACON. Yes, the cheese is fake. But the "white trash" part of me kinda loves that. And for under $4, you can't beat it. I've also tried the carne adovada, tacos, pancake breakfast, nachos... and not sure what else... But I've never been disappointed. They even have an outside little seating area so you can bring your dog if you want. One of the few places open 24-hours in ABQ and super yummy.

Love this place. A great alternative to Taco Bell or other fast food. Decent Mexican food. Affordable. Drive-thru open 24 hours. :)

  • Phil C.

The food is actually good and reasonably priced, just don't expect to be greeted by a friendly staff. The guy taking our order looked like a gang member and as friendly as his switchblade. I would expect at least the proverbial, yet insincere "welcome to (fill in the blank) may I take your order?" My advice- put your friendliest staff up front and maybe I'll come back.

  • Valerie M.

Love this place. It is quick, delicious and consistent. Barbacoa with boracho beans is one of my favorites. Along with the nachos, quesadillas, tacos, street tacos and salsas.

  • Desbah B.

Taco Cabana is A-OK in my book, and the fact that the drive thru is open 24 hours is a big plus. I like their soft tacos, unlimited trips to the toppings bar [when dining in], and their "homemade" tortillas. Back in the day -- I'm speaking of last millennium -- my friends and I would stop here after the good ol' Midnight Rodeo would close for the night. Now-a-days, I come here for a snack stop because you can order as much or as little as you'd like. I think the next time I dine in, I'll try something on the menu I have never tried before. Hummmm... Look forward to the next picture that I post to yelp. Happy eating!

  • Fredward H.

Best chicken soft taco's you'll ever have. At just about a buck fifty each, super reasonably priced considering the fact that the tacos are huge. They home make the tortillas there and you can taste it, the chicken is always perfect and they sprinkle cheese on top which is melted by the time you open your taco to stuff it full of their delicious, roasted, complimentary green chile.

I came to the drive thru to order some dinner. First of all the attendant over the speaker was not friendly at all. She seemed bothered when I tried to ask her questions about the menu and when I pulled up to the window she wasn't any friendlier. Part of my order was chips and quest, in which I informed her that I wanted the large order. When I take my order she doesn't even include the chips. When I go in to complain, I realize that she also over charged me by a dollar. When I explained this to the manager who was getting my chips, he basically said that "she said I didn't want chips," insinuating of course that I must be the one not telling the truth. He wasn't any more friendly. If businesses are going to have rude employees, or bad service, than they have to face the consequences.

They make food just like my abuelita. Excellent enchiladas. Beans and rice are authentic northern Mexico style. Fresh made flour tortillas are the best. The Mexican music reminds me of old Mexico. Can't beat the price.

I was so excited to see Taco Cabana while I was vacationing in Albuquerque. As a former Texan, I have many fond memories of Taco Cabana!! We stopped by for breakfast and Taco Cabana did not disappoint. I got vegetarian breakfast tacos and a drink (the flavored milky water ... can't recall the name). Breakfast was both yummy AND inexpensive. It was a great start to the day. I wish we had been able to spend more time in Albuquerque so I could go again for dinner.

I was just looking for a tasty beef burrito and was surprised by the Barbacoa Burrito from this establishment. It was very good and while it took a little while even at 1:30pm to get through the drive thru I'd go back again. Disclaimer: I do not particularly care for New Mexican food, I prefer TexMex but this was still pretty good.

    (4)
  • Milt S.

good food, very friendly and the prices were pretty good. Their burrito could use more filling, but the taste was good. The tacos were about 10X as good as the Bell's and just a few cents more.

Love this place for a quick, cheap and tasty meal. Breakfast is my favorite -- large portions of tasty food. Two can easily eat and drink for under $10 total. Try that anywhere else!

They may not look very appetizing and the strangely low price may make you skeptical about the huevos rancheros here, but don't worry they come through. In fact, they may be the best deal in town. Unlike a lot of places, Taco Cabana ponies up and gives you bacon on the side of your huevos rancheros, and this isn't some thin, limp, greasy, flavorless bacon, but actual high quality stuff and a lot of it. Then, of course, it the two eggs on corn tortillas absolutely drowning in red chile sauce, with plenty of beans on the side. No potatoes, but those aren't really missed when you get to the bacon. But you do get one of their incredible, fresh, made-to-order flour tortillas. (These come with nearly everything you order and are reason enough to try TC.) The carne adovada is also phenomenal for the price. The succulent, tender pork slow-cooked in spicy red chile is among the best in town, as well as being among the cheapest. It's one hell of a combination. I haven't explored the menu as much as I'd like to, just because I'm in love with the huevos rancheros and carne adovada burrito (I usually order both). But I always sample whatever my wife orders and nothing has disappointed me yet. Quality ingredients, great portions and prices. The Cabana also features an amazing fixin's bar with warm green chiles, pico de gallo, ranchero salsa, tomatilla salsa, onions, cilantro, and pickled jalapenos. Something for everyone. This really adds value to anything you order here, since you can fix it up with as much as you want of these items. Great place for a cheap meal and a great place for New Mexican food, and this location seems to be better than the few others I've tried. It's just cleaner, faster, and cooks the food more professionally.

Taco Cabana is hands down the best fast food you can get in Albq almost everything is delicious from there chicken fajita tacos, red Chile, tortillas, bean and cheese burritos, quesadillas I can go on for days if you haven't tried this place you have to! Not to mention there open 24/7

I am giving this location 5 stars mainly because I feel it's the best Taco Cabana in Albuquerque. The food is always good and fresh and the staff is on top of the cleanliness. The salsa bar is great! I love TC but this one is definitely my favorite!

  • Darling D.

Yeh I have always really liked taco cabana. I always order breakfast taco egg potato and cheese and for a dollar something makes my morning so conveniently deliciously better. Salsa bar is fun too if you have the time to go inside.

Can u say SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW????!!!!!!! The slowest fast food establishment that I've been too!!!! Ended up canceling our order after spending 20 minutes in the drive-thru!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous!!!!!!! This place deserves negative stars!!!!!

It's 9:30 and I'm driving aimlessly down San Mateo searching for something that is true ABQ and not chain hell. Oh there is Garcia's, but it's closed already and then the parade of chain places begin. Every fast food joint in the book looks open and then we have the old faithful, Chili's and AppleBees, but nothing else. Where are all the 24 hour taco joints that every freakin city has, where is the real Albuquerque at this time of night on one of their busiest streets? That's right this town has got nothing after 9pm, just punks driving fast and weaving through lanes til I see them at the next stoplight and lots of tattoos and crooked hats. Found this place (yeah, it's a chain, but not national and I never heard of it) at the far end of San Mateo and hit the drive through. It was a decent meal of chicken fajitas (not all white meat as promised) and the beans were a bit soupy. Rice was good and there was a good portion of guac, sour cream and salsa to dress up the already pre-stuffed tortillas. The thing that sets this place apart is the tortillas - these things are addicting and hot and fresh - and they give you two extra as well. That was the highlight of the $6.59 meal and as I drove back to eat the stuff I wondered what happened to ABQ and why do the people have to suffer late at night here so much.

Just ate at Taco Cabana. The shift manager started taking our order, however she couldn't speak English well enough to understand our order and right in the middle of taking our order she walked away and someone came up in a minute or so and finished taking our order. Our food took awhile and when we went up to check on it all was there except our chili rellano. The woman told us they needed to make some chili relianos and we could take what was ready and they would call our number as soon as the relianos were ready. We were almost done , went to check on the relianos and they had forgotten about them. When we finally did get them, there was a hunk of unmelted cheese in the middle do the chilis, like a piece of string cheese? I ordered a Corona and they said they would bring it out to me but never did, we finally had to ask for it again. Terrible service, mediocre food.

To say I love this place would be an understatement. I found everything is tasty but there is one dish that is above the rest. One dish that makes me forget this is supposed to be fast food. The beef fajitas are to die for. They have been the same tasty fajitas since I have been coming here (10 years+). Occasionally I will mix it up by having a tostada, spinage quesadilla, or a burrito but I almost always get the fajitas. They are served 1 pound (good for 3-4 people), 1/2 good for 2 people ($5 lunch), and single fajita plate. They have a salsa bar with many choices. Margaritas are very cheap but more like a spiked icee. The deserts are tasty, flan, Leche cake (seasonal I believe), and my favorite churros that are fresh and hot when they come out with a gooey center. There watermelon and cantelop drinks are great in the summer. This is my favorite restaurant. I found the Montgomery location is the best followed by San Mateo

Please note, my five star review is due to my deep, personal love for this place. Your own experience will vary. When Bound To Be Read was still around, and I was there 40 hours a week, I developed my Taco Cabana addiction. It got so bad, that I found myself running there for lunch at least 3, sometimes 4 days a week. I always get the #14 with red. Usually to go. I'll post a picture of it up here, because I love it so much. I live downtown now, far, far away from my beloved Cabana. I still have to get myself over their at least once or twice a month. It's cheap, and holy god, I love it. I still go to this one on San Mateo, as I think they make their food better than the other locations. That's probably a delusion.

This is one of Albuquerque's Original Open-kitchen Taco Cabanas and It's amazing, from the super fresh ingredients, the salsa and breakfast bars to the fact that they're OPEN 24-7. This is Fresh-Mex at it's best, and I can't wait to get back to ABQ for some of their home-made horchata!

In college this place (the one in San Antonio, TX) put me in the hospital after too many nights eating thick, fresh tortillas and queso... stuff like concrete in my gut... Anyhow, GREAT place for chicken tacos, quesadillas, etc. Yum. Wish they had them in NorCal.

Mexican fast food that's more than a notch or two above Taco Swill, er, Taco Bell. Good selection of salsas and nice atmosphere. The 2 times we've visited here we've had very nice counter service.

  • Melissa S.

Went here because it was close to my hotel and I saw some OK reviews. It was pretty bad. I mean, I ate it all, but I would not go back. Definitely not authentic. The queso tasted like it came from a jar. The beans were pretty good, flavored with pork. The tacos were kind of gross. It had a drive-thru which should have been the first red flag. Cheap though, but you get what you pay for. SKIP IT.

I used to love Taco Cabana when I lived in Austin, until I got food poisoning from them and refused to eat there for years. My wife, however, loves this place, and over the past couple of years I have started to appreciate it again. It is by no means my favorite place to eat, and I'm still a bit grossed out at the fact that they microwave your plate before serving it to give it the appearance that it is steaming hot off the grill or stove or whatever. However, with all that said. I have not got sick from eating there since that first time over 10 years ago, and it is fine for some quick, relatively cheap food. The horchata is really good there, and I love that they have Red Creme Soda. So it's ok, but nothing to be too excited about.

  • Christopher B.

This is either a joint where only the locals are able to appreciate the food or I got a bad BAD meal. Now I have an iron stomach and eat out quite a bit in many different states. But Taco Cabana put me down!!! As a chain, I'm not likely to visit any again to give it another shot.

Not bad for fast mexican food. Lengua tacos and horchata. Decent crispy chicken tacos however the shells are premade. Nothing not to like except it's a chain. I was desperate and in a hurry.

  • Jace G.

I'm floored that people think this is good food! It's better than Taco Bell, but the simple fact that I'd compare it to Taco Bell should tell you about the quality of the food. The one plus (and why it gets 2 stars and not just 1) is the salsa bar: good and fresh. This place is mexican fast food nothing more nothing less. Nothing about the food seems particularly fresh, nor good. And yes, I've been here a few times (at different locations in town), thinking I must have missed something, because of the other raving reviews. Turns out I didn't.

    (2)
  • Cass D.

I missed this place so much since moving from San Antonio where it was a must have once a week. This location did not disappoint. I visited twice driving through NM. You CANNOT find better Mexican in many restaurants, the tortillas are AWESOME. Okay, so maybe my opinion of this place is a little biased based on my love of their food... the prices are decent and after living in Arizona and Texas and growing up in a Mexican home, I like to think I know what I am talking about. How can you not like a place that has Barq's Red Cream soda in a fountain?! I accidentally dropped the hot plate in the trash on one of the stops in, and the staff was nice to me about it despite the fact that there were signs posted everywhere saying NOT to throw them away. If you don't like the food at this place, you obviously know NOTHING about real Mexican. BONUS POINTS FOR HAVING NUTRITION INFORMATION AVAILABLE. I love you Taco Cabana, I don't care if you are pink I still want to have your babies!

Love this place. It is quick, delicious and consistent. Barbacoa with boracho beans is one of my favorites. Along with the nachos, quesadillas, tacos, street tacos and salsas.

  • Milt S.

good food, very friendly and the prices were pretty good. Their burrito could use more filling, but the taste was good. The tacos were about 10X as good as the Bell's and just a few cents more.

I am giving this location 5 stars mainly because I feel it's the best Taco Cabana in Albuquerque. The food is always good and fresh and the staff is on top of the cleanliness. The salsa bar is great! I love TC but this one is definitely my favorite!

  • Brad W.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
