This is the very much a college hang-out coffee spot. This can be both good and bad. The upside is I've met some interesting folks, the downside I'm certain that I've been witness to at least one person purchasing hard drugs. Don't get me wrong I've never not felt safe but it can be a very mixed crowd. The staff have always been pleasant and the service has been prompt. The occasional line might slow things down but the waits have never been bad. One Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, there is a gentleman there selling used books which is nice. They also have various events going on throughout the month, including open mics and live music. In summary, a fine spot to spend some time if you're in the neighborhood but not really a destination. Tip: If paying by card tell them beforehand how much of a tip you want to give.

Great coffee, hand-roasted in small batches by Matthew the master roaster. Not particularly clean, but it's still a great place to hang out and view the local university fauna. The "Cafe Burrito" is popular. So is the breakfast burrito. Note that the default version is not "smothered." Try the tuna wrap for a lower calorie option.

Ah, the good old coffee shop. It reminds me of the ones I used to hang out at in Southern California. Good coffee, friendly people, comfy couches. Lots of space inside for poetry readings and such as well as plenty of outdoor seating. Never ate there, but the food looked good. Gets super crowded during the day when school is in session.

My ex-husband turned me on to this place, and it's wonderful. Great coffee, healthy food with vegan options, laid back, though school cafeteria-like, atmosphere, a plethora of evening events, including originals-only open mic night and a great central location. Winning Coffee is also known as R.B. Winnings Coffee. Every month there's a new local artist's work adorning the walls. The atmosphere has improved a bit in the past several months with the addition of French Cafe style cane backed chairs, so it feels a little less like a cafeteria. They have a huge outdoor seating area in front of the restaurant, and depending on who's out there, you may have to wade your way through a cloud of cigarette smoke. Or if that's too much to handle, you can enter through the back door which is off of the alley and a sea of parking, much of which you have to pay for. Several times a week, they roast their own coffee right on the premises. In that same corner, three days a week, Bradley of Bradley's Books, sets up his used book shop. He has all the classics college students and others appreciate. I'm giving Winning only four stars, because I wish they were open a lot later during the summer months. Technically they close at 5 p.m. when the internet access cuts off, though events are after hours. During the winter months, they are open until 9:30/10 p.m., and the internet stays on. UPDATED 9/21/2010: I just found out that their "homemade" lemonade isn't from scratch like I was led to believe. They make it from Minute Maid's frozen concentrated lemonade, which is loaded with high fructose corn syrup. They only offer this lemonade during the summer season. If it's not made from scratch, why offer it at all? They already sell the all natural Simply Lemonade. Yes, this is more expensive, but at least it follows the healthy options Winning offers. My four-star review stands as is, because Winning is a great place to eat, hang out, work, and the prices are reasonable. A side note about their Granola bowl, which is $4.50. The description says it comes with your choice of yogurt or milk, but mine usually comes with yogurt, which is perfect. The yogurt is Dannon All-Natural Vanilla Yogurt, which has 1-percent milk. It's a good choice. The granola is by Quaker. I'm guessing it's their Oats, Honey & Almonds Natural Granola, so it has a bit of crunchiness to it. You also get a choice of two fruits. The selection is great and is bananas, blueberries, strawberries and pineapple. Of course, I'd love to have a sampling of each. This is a solid granola fruit yogurt bowl. But the strawberries seemed like they were thawing out after being frozen and lost any freshness.

Winning is a relaxing place to go hang out alone or with friends. They have some of the best coffee in Albuquerque, as well as wonderful food, anything from Quiche (and yes, I've seen men order the quiche!) to GadoGado Asian noodles to the best scrambled eggs in the world. "The best in the world?" you might ask. Indeed, it was the scrambled eggs that really turned me into a Winning addict. Three scrambled eggs and two delicious pieces of toast made of home-made bread costs less than five dollars. When I originally went there a few years ago I was not a fan of scrambled eggs, but scrambled was the only way that they advertised serving eggs, so I tried them. There is no need for salt or pepper or hot sauce because these scrambled eggs are divine, no matter who is cooking that day. Winning also has great salad and sandwiches and soup, and, oh, the list goes on. Because Winning has Wifi one can do almost anything one wants. Sometimes I plug my computer in, put in my ear buds, and watch Netflix movies. Other times I bring exams that I need to correct or articles that I must read for my classes at UNM. One never knows what music will be piped in through the speakers. As far as the music goes, I have yet to go into the cafe and think "Hmm, this music sucks." Most of the time I find that they are playing stuff that I am familiar with and like very much. Other times, I may feel more like plugging into my iPod with ear buds, which I can do because the music is never too loud. They have a bookshelf with magazines and books and games that all are welcome to while they are there. The cafe has outdoor seating but I usually find myself sitting at one of the many tables inside because I am so often needing to do school work while I am there, not to mention that I go during the daytime when it tends to be very warm. I have eaten many of the items on their menu and never been let down. They also have many, many baked goods, with the selection changing from day to day. On those rare occasions when I am feeling sociable I usually end up running into a stranger or a friend who wants to chit chat. Another of the things I love about Winning is the books. Brad's Books sets up shot during the day on, I believe, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so if I am feeling like procrastinating I can go look at the very reasonably-priced used books that Brad sells (and he's recently started accepting credit cards so I can now buy a book every once in a while). As far as the clientele goes, well, I'd have to say the majority are some iteration of either hippie, punk, or college student or instructor or all of the above. It's my kind of place. And did I mention the convenience? It is just off of Central Avenue across from the University. Tres convenient! One last thing that needs mentioning is the art. The artwork changes regularly and is, I think, local artists showing their stuff. I have never been at night so cannot speak for the musical performances and night ambiance.

Fun place, the ambiance earned it an extra star. Breakfast burrito very good, but the coffee here (as well as in the rest of Albuquerque - at least at the "local" places") has an odd chicory-like flavor that was unappealing.

The only thing I'll miss when I leave Albuquerque. Very reasonably priced food, coffee roasted on site, and neat atmosphere. I recommend the house (sun) Chai, the breakfast burrito, and, when they have it, the green chili posole soup. Mmm.

The venue itself is cool. Outdoor seating spacious interior. Painted Windows that throw back to that hand painted sign era of the 40's and decent couches. But this is a a coffee shop, and although no extra brownie points are awarded for the free and sllooooowww WIFI, you gotta serve good coffee, and they don't The house coffee is normally burnt, stale, oxygenated. My Cafe Au Lait was steamed poorly, the exspresso suffers from under grinding, or pressure problems, and the milk is not guaranteed to be any less homogenized, hormone free, or soy (actually i didn't ask that question, but it should have been asked to me, for real) On separate occasions i heard people next to me complain about their drinks, and i cant be sure they have yelp so I must over represent for the common man who experiences less then adequate service here... So while i enjoyed this place for hosting a wide assortment of events, poetry, music, open mic, and attracting a cute crowed, its fauxlosophy attracts too many hipster wannabes and jaded and bladed college transitional flunkies to be oh so garish.... Ta Tah.... This place gets a 2 but i put 1 to swish out some over zealous reviews...

The best coffee in Albuquerque! The coffee is amazing and the breakfast menu is delicious. My favorites are the soy latte and the cafe burrito. I like that Winning is a family and pet friendly place. It is unlike other places where I feel I gotta grab my coffee and my kid and go. Absolutely my favorite coffee shop

Winnings is hands-down one of the best coffee shops in the country. I have spent many hours at coffee shops across the States and there is no place like Winnings. Their food, from the breakfast burrito to the green chile chicken posole, is all reasonable priced and tasty--though I haven't lived in Albuquerque for a few years, I still crave the breakfast burrito. The staff are all friendly as are most of the customers. The only downside to Winnings is that in the winter it leaves a little Winnings funk on your clothes--if you are a regular you know what I am talking about. Small price to pay for one of my favorite places.

  • Estefany G.

My boyfriend absolutely loves the half red chili and half green chili breakfast burritos so I'm forced to go here every once in a while. Someone on here said the crowd scares them but I actually feel quite comfortable with the crowd at Winnings. Maybe because I lived in San Francisco and I'm used to hippies, hipsters, grungy seniors, and smelly people. (I mean that in a good way). I don't like the coffee here so I don't hang out here as much as I'd like to. The eggs with a side of salsa and hashbrowns are good so that's what I order when I go there. I rate it 2 stars for food and coffee and 4 stars for ambiance.

  • Christopher S.

This coffeehouse is of a rare species for Albuquerque. It offers the best coffee in town and good food for a solid price. Best of all, you can spend hours inside (or outside on the patio) reading, writing or studying. Try their breakfast burrito, a favorite.

Winnings is a winner. Good coffee, plenty of seating space. WiFi too. Parking and an abundance of students is cumbersome. Thanks for reading. The Bike Chaplain

I meet up with people at Winnings all the time. The staff are friendly and nice, the coffee is strong (and you get 2 refills!) and there is a huge cooler with cold water in it (for rehydration purposes). The crowd is an eclectic amalgamation of college students, hipsters (?), professors/academic types and some families. Free Wi-Fi and decent , reasonably-priced food round out what is a good alternative to the sometimes sterile atmosphere you get at Starbucks. It does get crowded, so you need to stake out your table early. As with anything, early risers are the winners here. There is also a used book seller that swings through every now and then, with a decent selection, although I don't know exactly what the schedule is - I've only seen him once.

  • Aaron S.

I'd be lying if I said I'm not sitting on that patio nearly EVERY single day. The food is priced well and super tasty. Not mind blowing! The coffee is cheap and comes with many free refills... once again, not mind blowing! As a matter of fact there isn't anything here that is memorable or particularly exceptional, but I come here everyday... like clock work. I blame the amazing staff and the unparalleled atmosphere. It's more than worth it.

The best cappuccino I've ever had in my life. Inexpensive, great food with huge portions. One meal at Winnings will hold you for two - at least! Laid back setting. Free wifi for customers. Love it.

I miss you, Winnings, you and your fat-ass "deluxe" breakfast burrito stuffed with sausage and smothered with green. I miss the beat up hardwood floors (how you supported me!), the card tables, and the constant revolving parade of ne'er do wells I can show off to out-of-town guests. Except now I'm an out of town guest, how the tables have turned (wtf) Your cafe breve is to die for, your wi-fi is free, and some of my best memories are when I'd meet my best friend for brunch wi/ side of trash talking and sit there for 4 hours and graze on some pastries. (Side note: dude below with his comment about coughing on the scones skeeved me out, thanks dude) Also, we saw the dirty novels and the foxx there, which was a weird venue, v. high school battle of the bands, but a good show. Yay.

Good bagels and excellent coffee. Dont let the dirty hippies out front turn you off.

Coffee is AMAZING, food is very solid and ambience can't be beat, especially when there's live music and poetry. There's really nowhere better to chill out or get something done in Albuquerque. The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable.

This place has pretty decent coffee and food, but the real draw is it's laid back atmosphere. It attracts an equally laid back crowd. Prefect for hanging out with friends or doing some homework. Check it out.

When I'm feeling a little uptight, I like to hit up Winnings Coffee for chai and an attitude readjustment. There are always local hippies sitting outside, so if you tend to be intimidated by the dreadlock and patchouli crowd, I suggest you get over it and venture inside. There you'll find a quirky restaurant (complete with a community table and a few beat-up couches) with great drinks and food. The space is surprisingly airy and open, and all traces of patchouli vanish once you're inside. You order up at the counter and the food is brought out to you...with the server looking for you based on what you are wearing. Because they don't have a very sophisticated system for locating the correct diner, keep an eye out for your food, or else it might walk by you several times. I find this quirk to be rather charming and amusing, but if you're looking for speed and accuracy, don't expect it here. When I come to Winnings, I know what to expect and therefore come with the paper or a book. They also always have new art displays on the walls, so I like to take some time checking those out too. Generally, I'm quite content to sip chai and wait. There are two drinks on the menu you must try (and you pick them up at the counter, so you don't have to wait): the chai, which is strong and peppery, and the mocha shake, which is the epitome of delicious frozen coffee (and is made with rich ice cream). I tend to like the chai cold, but if you're ever suffering from the sniffles, the hot version will pick you back up in no time. Though they're open all day, Winnings only has a breakfast and lunch menu with fairly basic fare. Depending on my mood, I'll go for the bagel sandwich (with bacon and green chile), the waffles (which usually come with eggs...and for some reason, that combo is awesome), the BLT (on wheat bread with a side salad- so that makes the bacon healthy, right?), or one of their soups. Everything from the kitchen at Winnings is fresh and you can definitely taste the fact that it was made just for you. My only word of warning with the food is that you thoroughly inspect any of the baked goods that are out on the counter...I've had a couple stale pastries of theirs. Other than that, the food is always quite good. With their awesome chai and good food, I find Winnings to be a very pleasant place to have a bite to eat and relax. Something about hippies outside just screams "zen zone" to me, and I always leave calmer and fuller than when I arrived.

I'm surprised there aren't more rave reviews of this place on here. I spent some time in Albuquerque last summer and I hit this place up every morning. The iced coffee is fantastic and served in tumblers, and the breakfast burritos are huge and smothering with green chilies. Plus there are always a bunch of grungy looking types sitting around and talking about the latest thing they are enraged at or enamored of -- you will not be disappointed.

  • Heather C.

The coffee is quite tasty and the food really good-BUT the staff there is beyond unfriendly. I actually dread when I am craving the food because I have to deal with the service.

Winnings is a bohemian college coffee house that can be enjoyed by student and non-student alike. Espresso drinks are sta-rong. Good, but strong. The space is huge by coffeehouse standards, and still it can be tough to find a table, at times. They have decent baked goods and a whole menu of other tasty edibles to keep you going while you hit the books or just shoot the breeze.

    (5)
  • LooooAnn R.

Still the best cup of coffee in town. Not a fancy place and the service is up and down, but I'll deal with it to have the Greatest Coffee-EVER!

i've been on a hunt for a coffee shop that lives up to my standards in albuquerque for quite awhile now. i went here 3 times when i first moved to albuquerque. the first time i went here was fine, nothing special...but reasonable enough. the food was cheap. the coffee was tolerable...the atmosphere was lacking in several departments, but i can forgive that. on my second trip the cream for the coffee was sour. i brought my cup up to the counter, they were nice enough about it and gave me a new cup of coffee and fresh cream out of the fridge. forgivable. the 3rd trip the cream was sour again. again i bring my coffee to the counter. the person behind the counter pulls a container of cream from the fridge and says, "looks like its expired", pulls another one out, "this one is expired too, but it hasn't been opened yet, want to try this one?". i'm sorry, but i'm pretty sure its not legal to serve expired milk products. bad milk twice in a row is not forgivable in my book. i will not be going back.

  • Ashley E.

The coffee is great, the people are....interesting. The staff isn't very friendly and the customer base is decidedly crunchy. The cream of mushroom soup I had was sooooo good. THe bagel was decent but the "green chile" cream cheese had maybe two tiny pieces of green chile in it--so it lacked the flavor and heat I was looking for. Hubby was very happy with his burrito though. I'd go back just to see what other homemade soups the do!

When people think of coffee on Harvard and Central, they think of another quirky coffee place - My client gave me this knowing look and smile when I had told him I spent a Monday camped out on this side of town working. At least I hope that's why he was giving me that look ... Hah. No, sir, it's not what you're thinking - I was at Winnings! How can you hate this place when you can get a nice mug o' Joe for a bucksomething with a free refill?! I love the hippie vibe going on inside. Brought me back to college (Go Rams! Sorry, Lobo friends!). Great for people watching too. Perfect place to get some work or studying done or curl up with a good read. I also had the Green Chile Quesadilla. The chile didn't have that blazing, vibrant spice I crave; however, it was delicious, filling and affordable. Is there ever an open mic night or live music? Because the setting is perfect. Too divey or dumpy for you? That's OK! Just know when you come here, you won't have a sanitized, soulless coffee experience like when you visit a Starf!cks. This place is indeed a winning option for coffee, and the perfect office away from the office on business trips.

My husband owns a coffee shop/restaurant in our area, so one of our vacation pastimes is to see what folks are doing elsewhere. After reading the reviews of Winnings, we were truly hesitant - there were so many consistently harsh reviews. However, we weighed that some of that tone seemed to be a diatribe about the customer base, the lifestyle leanings, etc., that it really sounded like the reviewer tried to hit on an employee and got shot down. So, we tried it late one afternoon. At a glance, the brick light district consists of all of "those people" other reviewers didn't like, so why be surprised about the clientele? SERIOUSLY. That wasn't our issue, actually; the descriptions of the service and ambience were more to the point. The barista was outside when we came in, but when he got to the counter he wasn't super interested in helping us. We explained we had never been there and asked about suggestions of what to try, but he was distracted by something happening out the window and not paying attention. Tried the sun chai, which he did explain was spicier than most and not sweet (correct on both counts). Tried a raspberry brownie, which was just thick WHITE icing on a chocolate block, which my husband felt was equivalent to that in a convenience store. Overall, not impressive. The space is huge, as local shops tend to go, but strangely sterile. Customers were busy on computers (I think it is finals week here), but it didn't give off the warm "coffee house" vibe that many may be looking for. I really didn't expect that deadness from a place that is across the street from a college campus! Sadly, I can't give this a high rating. The food and the chai were just meh. Not on a list of place I would try again.

Winning is the kind of place that probably doesn't serve many Republicans - i.e., it has a crunchy granola, hippy, alternative college student vibe. They don't run the AC but the breeze is pleasant. Surprisingly, perhaps, Winnings' bathrooms are well stocked, large, and clean. The wifi is free but slow, and most of their big, sturdy tables have good outlet access. This is a big deal for a coffee shop scholar like me. The coffee tastes legit but I'm not a connoisseur, and others tell me that the food is basic but good. The location is prime: lots of foot traffic = good people watching. The biggest drawback for me is that they close early: 5p on Saturday, for example.

Lots of seating. Funky vibe. Crusty punks and cool folks out front. Cheap and delicious. Iced coffee gets a refill! Buzz buzz buzz.

  • Tess W.

I thought this would be a great spot given the location and cute exterior, but it's not the cozy coffee joint I hoped it would be. The interior is pretty stark and uncomfortable, and loud, too. And when I ordered tea I was disappointed to find that my choices were bags of celestial seasonings or trader joes...yikes. Their vegan burrito was fine, a bit bland. I'll go back to give their coffee a shot, but all in all this place didn't do it for me.

  • Emily C.

Great coffee shop and study spot in the UNM area. Pros: - Cheap and good coffee / iced coffee (with 1 refill) - Cheap and competent food menu. I recommend the chili taters for under $6! Homefries topped with melted cheese, green/red chile, and sour cream. - Good people-watching - a mix of locals and hippie/hipster type college students Cons: - No A/C (or bad A/C?) It can get pretty warm in there during the summertime. - Not enough outlets - gotta grab a seat by the wall to plug in!

This is the place to go in Albuquerque if you want a killer breakfast burrito, delicious coffee, and fresh, locally sourced, and very tasty sandwiches. You can't go wrong with the soup--especially the posole if they have it. My girlfriend loves bacon grilled cheese. You can get work done easily there--plenty of tables, wifi, and the sidewalk cafe scene is colorful and crazy. Don't let the other reviews about the people dissuade you. You won't ever enjoy life or good food with that attitude. Ps get the green chili sauce on the burrito. I can't wait to go back here.

I love the coffee, especially the café breve, and the scones are great. But please do something about the flies! I was nearly eaten alive on my last visit on a Saturday morning. And I had just taken a shower, honest to God

This is one of the few cafes in Albuquerque that have an actual beat coffee culture. On Wed. and maybe Sat. they have an uncanny book stand which sells only the books you want to read. And their deluxe breakfast burrito is probably the best I've ever had.

I know that Winning is "not for everybody" as the people who have reviewed it before have said. However, I have brought family and friends of all backgrounds into Winning, and they all enjoyed themselves. It is an experience, and certainly not generic or boring. There is always great people watching and interesting artwork adorning the walls. What I would recommend trying is: Breakfast Burrito for sure- best ever. I miss it every day since I moved away. Especially good if Jose is still there cooking. Smothered Breakfast Burrito- bomb. Yerba Mate- just the plain kind. They serve it in a giant french press, and it lasts for at least an hour. This is the drink to get if you need to write, grade, or do homework inside because it will keep lasting and lasting, you can make it strong or medium depending on how long you let it seep, and it will keep you wired for hours. Great staff too. Everyone there is always there when I visit again- that definitely says good things about the establishment. Best to you, Winning. Hope to stop in soon!

What can I say? Great coffee, good pastries, local business. There's always a colorful and fun crowd hanging out in or out. They sell some righteous beans, as well. Their honey walnut cream cheese is life-changing.

  • Scarlett S.

Make no mistake, this IS a college coffeehouse; on that same coin - this is possibly the best college coffeehouse in town. The coffee is great, the food delicious, the local scenery ...interesting. Which all makes for a funky vibe you may not get elsewhere in Albuquerque. Carve out some time when visiting to read a good book or just take in the eclectic crowd who frequent the place. Parking can sometimes be a problem, unless you visit by bike. Inside and outside seating, cheap (but good) food, and good service. What else could you ask for on a lazy Sunday morning?

  • Andy L.

I'm a repeat customer to this place (this was my fourth time here). I like the food and the coffee, but today I had a terrible experience with the cashier. I'm legally blind and have trouble seeing (obviously). I read the sign at the beginning of the line that said Today's Quiche had onions, cheese, etc, and when I got to the front I told the cashier I wanted Today's Quiche. He said "which one?" I said I don't know, the one on the sign. He said "do you want the vegetarian one or the one with meat" and I said I hadn't noticed that so I walk back towards the sign, and he follows me. He points at the sign and says "mushroom or bacon". I say bacon and then he asks if I want a soup or salad with that. I asked him what types of soups they have, and instead of telling me, he points at a sign off to my left and says the soups are listed there. Really?! You can't just tell you customers that the quiche options are bacon or mushrooms, and what the soup options are? You have to be rude, and try to make your customers feel like their presence and questions are an inconvenience to you? I won't be going back.

    (1)
  • Jen J.

The iced latte I got was so bitter and burned that I couldn't have more than my first sip. The guy behind the counter was rude, and I didn't get the feeling that I would get a better latte if I told him. So I left. While we were waiting for someone to come to the counter to help us, a woman came up and put a dead bee on the cash register and then walked away. I don't really know what to say about that one. The vibe is pretty hipster, but I liked it and thought I could see myself coming there to get some work done. But there are better places nearby to get coffee, like Duggan's or Michael Thomas. Plus they are really nice to you there. It's possible I just had a random bad experience, but with so many other reliable options I don't think I'll be coming back.

  • El W.

"Sometimes Winning can take all day" was the saying and also a Facebook group at one point. Although my old crew here has disintegrated the vibe goes on dude. Bring your own cup and regular coffee, hot or iced is only a buck and change. Double shot espresso drinks only two bones amigo(with cup). The breakfast burrito prices went up but they're using local eggs now and it makes a difference! The breakfast burros are bomb.com and I also love the reuben sammy. Before Albuquerque's coffee boom this was our "central perk". I still see many friends, fellow students, acquaintences, community members and professors here. Decent coffee, good random conversations on the patio, great food at a good price, this places is a staple man; a real community coffee shop. WINNING POR VIDA!

  • Charisse L.

Food is amazing. Too bad I can't say the same about the service and the people who work here. And the coffee. It's a coffe shop, it should have good coffee.

  • Andrew M.

Hands down some of the best coffee in town. If you bring your own vessel it is only 1$ for a cup o joe, foods good, and a good portion for the to go breakfast burritos. Get the burritos with red chili.

    (5)
  • Robert C.

Very low key bohemian vibe inside. I especially loved the man who was selling used books inside the cafe. Apparently, he does this everyday? It was my first time as well as my friend's. We had no idea what to expect but had heard good things from a local. Dear lord, the servings are massive and delicious! We went with the huevos rancheros and our plates were packed edge to edge with food. It was all deliciousness so we happily stuffed ourselves. Best part it was super cheap! Go hungry. Leave happy.

Great breakfast burrito and a coffee shop feeling right out of metropolitan town. Smooth coffee, definitely will be back

  • Ilya W.

As a New Yorker visiting Albuquerque for the first time, I realize that my expectations and perceptions might be different from the average customer here but here 'tis: customer service was excellent. You will feel welcomed and appreciated for your service without having someone breathing down your neck every five minutes. That said, the food was just ok. I ordered the christmas taters--potatoes with green and red chilis. Too little food and WAY too much sauce. The chai was delicious but heavy on the spice--throat-burning heavy. The place could also use a good sweep. But the comfortable atmosphere and affordable prices are worth coming back for.

So, after telling a friend of mine about my hatred for Winnings he convinced me to give it another try. So, me being me, I did. He wanted me to try some of their food, which he claims is delicious, but I got off work too late to get there in time to try any. I was working on a 20 page research paper and instinctively reached for a cup of joe... The flavor of it was fabulous and smooth. It was genuinely a good cup of coffee. The layout of Winnings is nice. The front room with the counter has large couches for people to sit and chit chat. The other room is set up like a normal restaurant with tables and chairs to work on homework, read the paper, and enjoy a meal. I still am having trouble accepting Winnings mostly because of the other restaurant patrons. Although, most of them seemed to be solid people there were 3 or 4 groups of really obnoxious trustafarian kids rolling around on the couches, making a scene, and talking about their righteous movements. Hint, refusing to wear shoes or bathe yourself is not a righteous movement. It's gross. So, I'll give Winnings a try on the food, but I don't think it's ever a place I will see myself studying or hanging out with friends. I guess I'm more of an uppity Starbucks patron because I'm judgmental and easily annoyed by loud, obnoxious, new-age hippie youth which frequents this place.

Great staff in a little bit cheaper than Starbucks. Are you the scones are good. but I tried the banana bread. Lots of cheating with couches tables and chairs a great college feel right across the street from unm. Beware the parking Nazis I came here when an appointment was cancelled last minute, got distracted and nearly got a parking ticket.

Tried ordering a late lunch this afternoon. Cashier was when asked about specials. I decided not to stay. As I left, I realized they were closing in an hour. Maybe that's why they were irritated...who knows. I was just trying to support a local business, instead I had lunch at a chain. At least they're consistent.

Winning always is a great place to go, whether you want exquisite coffee from different parts of the world or some great New Mexican food, it has it all. I usually come here for coffee but the food is great an inexpensive. It's a fun coffee shop- always has art up... Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Bradley's books every mon, wed, Friday where you can find great books for cheap. Last it's a great people watching place- lots of interesting people around Harvard district.

The coffee was enjoyable. The decor was ok but clean. The staff polite although not terribly engaging. The best part was the amateur musicians who were there to sing and demonstrate their talents.

For starters the coffee beans are over roasted. I had a macchiato, what I saw was just sad. They topped the macchiato with pre made froth. Literally pulled out from a container in the fridge. The burned flavor of the beans just ruined the drink. On another note, I also ordered an iced chai that ended up coming from the fridge. Again pre made, and also too spicy. This review is specifically more towards the drinks I had.

Their selfish and frivolous use of 86ing and police calls in an open space is completely unacceptable. It is a place that many pedestrians have to go by to get to other places. Their tables are set up in a way obstructive to pedestrians. It's hard to explain. Some people are banned from there for life; I've met at least 10. Not serving someone is common, but this is a wide open area where the staff is saying it's permanently illegal for those people to even stop walking for a second or to talk to someone. I had not seen it before. They make no apologies, as if they have no understanding of why that makes people uncomfortable. Besides, it may not be pleasant for some people even just walking through there with all the second hand smoke and crap one might trip over.

Really cool coffee place, great variety of coffee drinks and awesome snacks. I guess they do have some more substantial food, but I just had a chocolate-pumpkin bread slice, along with a drink I can't remember the name of, but it involved a shot of espresso in coffee. good wake up drink, for sure. Having traversed so much of the West Coast, the coffee can stand on its own. Love the vibe, and the spaciousness of the place along with solid, free wifi. Judging by the posters on the wall, seems to be a good place for the LGBT crowd to hang out. I'd be here a lot if I were a UNM student, hells yah!

The food is ok. With the exception of the big, hairy pretentious prick who was working the register at around 1:00pm on 4/12/15, the staff is generally courteous and efficient. However, as I was reminded today when I asked whether they had a Mexican latte, "This isn't Satellite Coffee." So, if you're out for some decent, affordable breakfast food and don't mind being talked down to by a homeless circus clown with poor personal hygiene, this is your spot. If you want a Mexican Latte and/or a clean bathroom, cross the street to Satellite, where many of Winnings customers were originally exiled from.

Great coffee + delicious smothered breakfast burritos = a great New Mexican morning! I love this place. (They are open on Saturdays).

I've been waiting to try this place for awhile. I stopped by at about noon on a Monday. The place is very "divey". It was crowded outside, but there were some tables available inside and air conditioning was just what I was looking for :). I ordered an iced coffee and some chicken posole. I must admit, when I was handed a bowl of posole with little stewed tomatoes peeking out, I was skeptical. I thought "this could be really bad." But I was pleasantly surprised. The posole still had the spicy, chile flavor with yummy hominy that I've come to expect. The chicken was a nice surprise. It was tender and delicious. The tomatoes added a nice flavor. It was kind of like your favorite bowl of homemade tomato soup meets your typical delicious posole. The iced coffee was also really good. Buy the iced coffee for there and not for to go. They'll give you a free refill, and you can take that to-go if you'd like.

Let me start by saying, I come here frequently because I like the coffee. It's cheap and I don't necessarily mind the junkies, hippy burnouts, crust kids and miscellaneous fringe people who have pretty much turned the place into their clubhouse. With that said, I will say that my last experience there was pretty damn terrible. Me and my friend both ordered breakfast bagels with bacon. We were kept a waiting a very long time before our breakfast actually arrived and it turned out to be the WRONG ORDER. The waitress (tall blonde girl with a pixie haircut) brought us two breakfast burritos instead. I told her that this was not are order and she gave me back a lot of attitude. She didn't apologize or offer to amend the situation she just said'" I heard breakfast burritos" and stared at me expecting to take the burrito instead. She then said "what do you want? with a lot of rudeness and volume. Not apology, no offer to correct the order. I then told her that I would like what I ordered and she just walked away. About 30 minuted later she finally brought me my (correct) order and when she literally dropped the plate on the table and walked away without saying a word. I have never experienced such shitty service in my life. I have been a regular customer to Winning's for years but I doubt I will return again anytime soon. If the management at Winning'''s reads this review, hopefully they will reprimand this waitress or have her fired. She should not be in the service industry.

    ~~~ Winnings would be a good coffeehouse, even if it were not in Albuquerque, a city a little behind the curve. Winnings has the Funk Factor going on! That's important! While I must say it's hard to get a electric outlet and a parking space. I found Winnings light years ahead of Satalite Coffee around the corner. If you go, please know, while I didn't have a refill, I'm told their Re-Fill policy is great! Food is good too! Best of all, the people watching is awesome!!! Albuquerque is a place where some very colorful people end up, and the University District is a cool place to watch everyone in verious stages of hippiedom.
