My papa never made burgers this good! This place is a hidden gem in the north valley. I've been here a few times and the burgers are soooo good. The chips are pretty impressive too. The staff is really nice and the business is family owned. The owner makes his rounds and makes sure everyone is enjoying their food and having a good experience. This is a great lunch spot and the tv's always have something interesting on. They have an impressive arcade too! Bring the kids and have a fantastic time.

As tourists in Albuquerque staying in this northwest area of town, we tried Papaburgers as a place to please two vegetarians and two meat eaters. As the name suggests, Papapburgers serves mainly burgers but they also have a really nice grilled cheese that comes with a roasted green chili. We got this with sweet potato fries and regular fries, and everything was yummy. Do they cook the grilled cheese on the same flat top as the burgers? Who knows. Sometimes, when you're a vegetarian in a pinch and on a road trip, you just do your best. The inside has lots of tables with a diner vibe. We waited a bit for our take-out order, leading me to believe these are all made from scratch. They were very friendly and set us up with lots of silverware, napkins, ketchup, green chili salsa and some kind of yummy white dill dip in to-go cups.

I have loved and still LOVE Papaburgers. I frequent the North Valley location and I have seen that they opened a new Heights place too! Last week when I had a burger there...it was a beautiful thing. The green chile on my "ciara" burger was thick and flavorful with just the right amount of heat to compliment the swiss cheese and yummy NM beef. Also I had a perfect size root beer float...$2 or $3 bucks and worth every penny! The North Valley location also has a little arcade in the back...fun times.

As per my husband who lived in El Paso for 11 years, his direct quote is "if you are yearning for Chico's Tacos, this is as close as you will get without a road trip!" Burgers are always tasty, service is friendly, tables are clean. Love that the salsa is waiting on the counter for you upon arrival!

Excellent Burgers at a great price, delicious shakes and very friendly staff. We will definitely be back.

Was disappointed. This place has gone downhill. I ordered a green chile & avocado cheeseburger. It only had two small strands of green chile that was way too mild with no taste to it and they are using cheap processed cheese. I could have honestly got a better tasting green chile cheeseburger at McDonalds on their value menu for half the price. Disappointing because they claim to specialize in New Mexico Homestyle Burgers. Thats a bogus claim in my opinion. The beef was even bland and under seasoned. I do appreciate that they are locally owned and they do use whole green chile but it just had no real taste to it and I got vary little. Two small strands.

The best BLT I've ever had! The toasted bread was super buttery, and the bacon crisped to perfection. The sandwich didn't fall apart like most BLTs. I haven't tried the burgers yet but my parents said they're the best they've tried so far in Albuquerque. I'll be picking one up next time I'm there.

Had the biggest craving for a burger but not the pre-made patty kind. Read some of the reviews for Papa Burger and just had to head over. Definitely worth the trip, the bacon burger and sweet potatoe fries were excellent.

Fresh, Super Tasty Burger! Had mine with Green Chile and a side of Fried Green Beans. So good. I love a local burger!

Mediocre. Blah. Green chile cheeseburgers ... we Burqueans have a certain expectation about our green chile (with everything) cheeseburgers (GCCB). Papaburger Heights missed. I give two stars instead of one because of the big puffy burger bun straight from the kitchen that was a miracle of chefliness, plus the best onion rings ever. I can not fairly give more than two stars, because that big puffy burger bun was burned. And because the onion rings are just a side. And because, by Burque standards, the meal was kinda pricey (almost $10 for the basket meal). But that was not the worst part. The worst part was that my green chile cheeseburger totally missed the mark. It was flavorless. It had no flavor. I could not taste it. I would not be complaining about the price if the GCCB was right ... I'd be raving about going back ... which I'm not planning to do. Because this burger I ate (most of) had NONE of that special GCCB goodness we Burqueans know when we ruminate on the first bite, This burger had no flavor. There was no flavor in the first bite, or in the second bite, either. There was no flavor in any of the bites. The green chile ... flavorless. Cheese? Flavorless, when I could find some. That beefy juicy grilled goodness we expect from a GCCB? Not there, zero, zilch, nada. What's up with that? This was my second meal at the Heights location. Most likely I will not go back. A disappointment.

My husband and I stopped in for a burger after early voting, since it was next door. It was a pleasant surprise. As I ordered, I could see the cook preparing the fresh ground beef, (not frozen patties), and I knew it would be good. We both had green chili cheese burgers and I can't really say I've had better, other than my own. Fries were nice and crispy. I will go here again when in the North 4th St area.

Heard mixed reviews on this place want sure what to expect. The staff was extremely friendly and efficient. My daughter ordered a green chili, avocado cheeseburger she loved it because they give you one big chili cut in half she said she liked that because she got chili with every bite. Fries were ok nothing special. They were very busy and i was surprised how quickly our food was served. If i were to compare it to a burger I'd say a cross between Freddy's and Blakes.

Wow! My favorite Burger Joint in New Mexico!!! Staff was great and so was my green chili cheese burger & jalapeno fries! I would definitely recommend this place!!! :-)

  • John P.

This is a very tasty burger! I love the bacon grease dripping off the elbow. Cheese fries are delicious. The place itself is really cool with lots of Johnny Tapia stuff all over. Plus I like the IPad register setup, to me it's a really modern touch. I will return to this location, and would recommend that everyone tries it at least once.

I come here all the time. I use to be a hardcore regular until they expanded their valley restaurant (which was necessary). The prices are ridiculously reasonable for the quality of the food they serve. This restaurant is family owned and the owner and his daughter(s) use to regularly work the register and they were really pleasant to talk to. One of the complaints I have is that since these guys get so busy, and have a lot more room to take care of, sometimes the hygiene and cleanliness of the restaurant is clearly in bad shape. I have definitely seen swarms of flies around the trash cans, but that was a while ago.

I like a good burger. I like a locally-owned burger joint even more. Thanks, Papaburgers for being both! The burgers are all good here, I love the fries. They also have shakes and hot dogs. You can't really go wrong with any of it. Bacon green chile cheeseburger? Yes, please. This place certainly caters to the family with kids crowd. Bright, vibrant colors, a gaming area, it's like every little league team's dream come true. So be aware that you'll see a lot of kids and families here if you come in.

  • Chris Nyman W.

I swear to god this place makes the best hamburgers in Albuquerque, and possibly the best anywhere. The trick is they put chopped onions inside the burger. The second thing that makes them so fantastic is a huge solid slice of NM Green Chile. (Small farmer Hatch green chile of course!) Third and not the least important to me, is that they offer a nice, fresh whole wheat bun. They also have excellent french fries, sweet potato fries, fried green beans and fried jalapenos. I'm not a huge hamburgers fan, but when I have one it better be here. The best deal on the best burger in town.

One bite of a Papaburger, and you'll wonder how you ever wasted your time or money on the likes of McDonald's or Wendy's. Albuquerque lacks my beloved In-N-Out Burger, but that need is more than adequately met and exceeded by the old fashioned goodness of Papaburgers. The menu is simple: burgers, fries, hot dogs. That's pretty much it. I'm not sure why you'd want anything else, though... Especially after you sink your teeth into one of the juicy, all local hamburgers here. Even better, top that burger off with a couple of green chiles before you take a bite. It's obvious that quality is the guiding star for Papaburgers: the beef is juicy and tender, perfectly cooked; french fries are just crispy the way you'll like them, and not plastered in salt or dripping in nasty grease; portions are perfect to satisfy that craving for a good ol' American meal. If you force me to nitpick, I can only find two itty bitty things to complain about. First, the green chile could stand to be a lot hotter, although it is darn tasty. Second, I am consistently bummed when I want to get a tasty hamburger and realize it's Sunday, and alas Papaburgers is closed. The fact that those are the only two faults I can name should tell you just how awesome this place is.

Pretty awesome!! Love the big slab of chile! Glad they opened a new location that is closer to me. (Louisiana and Montgomery)

Great place for a quick bite to eat, they have milkshakes too! Great prices, cool atmosphere, and not that greasy. Green chili is good, not burning your mouth hot, just right.

Best in class for griddle burgers, by which I mean those thin, griddle fried burgers with the crispy edges. The patties here are fresh, juicy, delicious, and just a little crunchy around the edges. Yet, unlike Freddy's or Culver's, these burgers aren't insanely greasy, in fact, they're barely greasy at all. Perfectly cooked, deliciously fresh and beefy, and served on slightly grilled buns. The amount of toppings options at your disposal is downright impressive. You can really make a custom masterpiece here. And the toppings are all very high quality. The bacon is thick, the tomatoes and lettuce are fresh, and, instead of green chile bits, you get a green chile, as in, the whole pepper flayed out atop your burger. That is awesome. The burgers are beyond reproach. They are phenomenal, and reasonably priced. My only complaint is that the fries seem like an afterthought, as they are very boring, pretty mediocre, and relatively small. It's a shame, but the burgers more than make up for this oversight. And they serve some damn good Nathan's hot dogs as well.

I am a burger fanatic. I eat at least four a week. I passed Papa Burger and I decided to give them a try, and boy am I happy I did. I had the Avocado Chile Burger and it was out of this world. Everything was really fresh and the contrast between the ingredients was perfect. I will be back again for this NM style burger.

I noticed a giant change in customer service. They hired more staff and lunch hour seemed very organized today. For the money, the food is great. The burgers are cooked to order and priced fair. I'll definitely be back.

Papaburgers is a nice local restaurant, with a little room for improvement. The food has been consistent and the dining room is always clean. Drink refills are always free, and the owners have always been on site every time we have eaten there. The one problem I have experienced on more than one occasion is the actual preparation of the food. Our toppings seem to come out wrong more than they come out right. Very rarely have we received all of our food like we ordered it. Don't get me wrong, I will continue to patronize this business, but a little more attention to the final details could make this place great.

  • Steve P.

Papa Burgers used to be a good value, it is no longer. I had not been by in several months and was first surprised by significantly increased prices. High enough that they are in danger of hurting their business by getting too close to higher quality burgers. Additionally, they purportedly sell milkshakes, but they are not on the menu, why would anyone buy without knowing the price? We ordered to go and the ticket time was greater than 20 minutes, simply unacceptable. Nearly half of that time the order was ready, the cook rang the bell and placed it on a shelf. The owner who was also working the cash register went by the window twice without delivering it. I witnessed the cook telling them it was ready. So either the owner is vindictive or wasn't paying attention. Neither is a good thing. I asked the owner about the issue and he sort of apologized but offered no remedy for my cold dinner. No thank you Papa Burgers, from now I on I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I love this place! I appreciate that this is a locally-owned restaurant. They seem to take great pride in quality. It has an old fashion appeal that's relaxed and fun. The juke box is often playing.

Delicious burgers. They use whole green chile, and it's plump and juicy. Be aware that they grill the burgers over sauteed onions. If you want a little more green chile flavour and spice add their green chile sause they keep in little cups on the counter. There is usually some special, with a bonus burger or dog sandwich, and some different menu items, be sure to check the whiteboard behind the registers.

My favorite burger place in Albuquerque. I have been going there since it opened and it's great to see how well they are doing. Be sure to put the green chili sauce on the burger. It's spicy and adds a great flavor. Next time you're in the mood for a burger, you have to have papa burgers!

Looks and smells like a Blake's. The beef is fresh, but you can't really tell cause it's smashed so thin. Chile's in strips, but not hot enough. Real nice family runs the joint.

This week, Chasing Cheeseburgers decided to venture slightly farther from our usual haunts and head up to the Village of Los Ranchos in Albuquerque's North Valley. A friend of ours who works in that area had recently brought a new burger joint to our attention, so we met him for a tasty lunchtime treat. Papaburgers is a locally owned and operated mom-and-pop shop -- and you know that from the moment you enter. Next to the jukebox and arcade games (everyone appreciates a little Ms. Pac-Man every now and then) are photos of the owners, staff and happy customers enjoying burgers. You order at the register, next to a tall display of Hatch green chile, and there are little cups of green chile sauce to take to your table, if green chile is your thing (and why wouldn't it be?). The menu is a complete assortment of cheeseburgers and hot dogs, chili bowls and onion rings. Needless to say, we were ordering like children in a candy shop. With extremely reasonable prices (a cheeseburger and fries basket is only $4.85) one can easily stuff himself silly and not break the bank. Chopped onions are packed into the fresh ground beef to give the patties a little 'umph' and the buns are grilled to warm, crispy perfection. Avocado, bacon, or a strip of green chile can be added to any order at only a slight extra charge. Of The Rose ordered the Chiara Burger (pickles, "long green chile," swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mustard) for $4.25. Lindsay G Rocks had an Andre Burger, which is a burger that -- in addition to American cheese, mustard, pickles, lettuce, and tomato -- comes with a sliced, grilled hot dog and chili on top. Oh yeah, and high cholesterol with a chance of afternoon naps. Also on special that day were sweet corn jalapeno bites, which were essentially delicious little sweet corn hush puppies with chopped jalapenos inside -- a true delight to the tongue. We decided Papaburgers was deserving of a 9.5 rating. The burgers are melt-in-your-mouth fantastic and the flavor of the patties is phenomenal. The all-beef weenie on the Andre Burger was so good it could easily have been a meal in itself. Needless to say, we will be returning to try the chili dog. The Chiara Burger's green chile was not chopped or a chile sauce, but an entire slice of magical New Mexican chile with the perfect amount of heat and flavor. For those who enjoy things a little less spicy, the complimentary chile sauce had all of the flavor with less of the kick. The fries are cooked to a golden perfection. After an enjoyable lunch and a little kickball conversation, we left -- overly satisfied and slightly food-drunk. If ever you have the craving for a big beautiful burger head to Papaburgers and you won't be disappointed.

Burger Bliss finally in ABQ. Anyplace that grounds onions into their meat (and I can't think of many) is off to a good start in my book. The taste was even better. Toasted bun, long green chile (on the Chiara Burger) and I had to add bacon, although it really wasn't needed. No condiments needed either as the green chile slice added it's own unique taste to this burger which had Swiss Cheese melted all over the superior tasting ground beef. Every bite sucked, only because I knew I was getting closer to finishing. How's that for reverse psycholgy? Papa is on his game.

Great lunch Spot. Fresh beef patties with onions grilled into the meat. Great fries too. Simple Menu. Girl at the counter has been very friendly and said she likes it when we call ahead.

We started eating here in the spring of 2011. Sadly it has greatly declined in quality. The last couple of times they have gotten the order wrong, or forgot the green chile or just put a tiny strip on it when you bring it to their attention. They used to be so generous and so nice, but with success they have gotten lazy about treating their customers right. Last time I went I placed my entire order, the girl turned from the counter to turn the order in, but forgot to take my money for 2 meals ($23.00). I stood there and the wife of the owner rudely said, "I thought you had already been helped." I said, yes, she took my order, but not my $$. That lady didn't even thank me for my honesty and acted like it was a chore to find my order to get my money. Geez! I could have just walked off and waited to have my order called without paying. We are DONE with Papaburgers and will no longer recommend it to our friends and will tell the truth that these people get your order wrong more often than not and they treat people like crap when they get busy and they are getting stingy. We go to The Grill now, better burger and they are very nice and friendly and in a good mood ALL the time. They know how to treat customers right and they have a nifty condiment burger bar where you can fix your burger the way that you prefer it & they have all you can eat FREE chips and freshly made salsa there too. So long Papaburger's it was good...for a while.
