Burger topped with green chile was very good. A little kick but not too much. Now to go back for the famous steaks.

Service was despicable, food was terrible. The manager lady is worse than Cruella Deville. DO NOT EVER WASTE YOUR GAS, MONEY, TASTE BUDS OR TIME ON THIS NASTY FESTERING PIMPLE ON CENTRAL AVENUES UNWASHED TAINT!

Worst steak ever saw on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives so had to try. Gross fries and tough steak. Avoid

OK, it's not in a great part of town! Go with what they are good at steaks and hamburgers!! The waitresses are well to the point! Don't expect a bunch of extras because you totally aren't gonna get them. Like DDD shows it is a dive...but the people are pretty much regulars and you can go as is and enjoy relax. We got there at a good time and got seated right away but if you go at peak times expect a wait!!

So so SOOOO disappointed. Was not impressed with this place at all. I really wanted to like it too, because the food looks good...it just didn't taste that great. If I was in the neighborhood I would try the Green Chili burger everyone is talking about. But their steaks? not impressed. Honestly, try it if you're in the area, but I wouldn't waste time or money going out of your way for this joint. Sorry.

Being my first time in Albuquerque, I was skeptical when I was being sent to some small-town dive "steakhouse". Even being attached to the liquor store, and my desire to see a kitchy local joint, was filled with hesitance. Might this be one of those instances where fame and popularity influenced word of mouth rather than the other way around? I can say, regardless of the look of the venue, the food is LEGITIMATE. Easily one of the three best steaks I've ever had in my entire life... no joke...and could easily be #1. The entire meal (bacon-wrapped filet, jumbo shrimp, texas toast, hand-cut fries, salad with homemade ranch dressing, and a local IPA beer.) There was so much flavor in my mouth, I thought my tongue was going to explode. I'm still not sure if it was an actual steak or a meat-covered sack of steak juices, it was that succulent. I strongly recommend out-of-towners to try out this small, mom-and-pop joint for the food alone. You will not be disappointed.

I'm such a dork. Living in Southern California, I've bumped into a few "celebrities" in my life... but to me, it ain't no big deal because WHA??? You think THEIR $#%@ don't stank? But my oh my.... When I came here on a whim (coworker ranting about how "good" the food looked here on the triple D show), ate the food, AND went looking for the owners... I must sadly admit, I was a bit star struck. Yup, I was really EXCITED to meet one of the Greek brothers that own this joint. After I told them I came all the way from So Cal to check out the place, they gave me the star treatment. First off, my husband and I got hooked up with some bomb Greek appetizer dish with grape leaves, cold cuts and my favorite FETA CHEESE! I must say... Greeks DO know their cheese, yum. On our way out... they even took us out front into their liquor store section of their restaurant and said "Go ahead... take what you want". WTF? Are you serious? Of course accepting a freebie offer like that would be a heresy to my asian upbringing so I declined. But wow. This man INSISTED I take home with me at least a bottle of Kahlua... so come on y'all! What's NOT to love about this place?!!! It's totally owned by "peoples"!!!! Okay, so let's get down to the nitty gritty. The location... kind of off-road for this city slicker's standards but it's literally a converted old gas station. My husband (who's a native Greek) took ONE look at this place as we were about to enter the restaurant and asked "Are you SURE about this place? It looks like a typical A$$ bar in Greece". No windows, shady lookin' building with a heavy steel door. And yup! Guess what? You walk inside and it's totally fantastic. Instantly, your clothes start to absorb the smells of the kitchen (remember... NO WINDOWS), it's decorated with everything "Elvis" and "The Parthenon", and check this out.... candy and gumball vending machines just outside the bathroom. Great right? lol.... Anyway, the food. Wow. The pork souvlaki (skewers) are bomb. The marinade is so dang good. I ordered a thick juicy steak (medium rare of course) and it came out just perfect.... just enough salty with just enough fat trim on the side... and here comes the big enchilada..... the TEXAS TOAST. It's gotta be my favorite "side" to a steak now. Forget potato cakes from Claim Jumpers or monster wedges, it's all about the Texas sized bread. I tell ya... CARB perfection with cheese on top (literally!). So anyway... I think this place is a great place to go eat that has decent prices and exudes that "homey" feel that you can't put a price on. You can tell most customers are local regulars... (their "waiting list" is a crusty old Mead Notebook and you jot your name down yourself... LOVES IT!). I totally recommend this place for out-of-towners and natives alike for some good times, and GREAT eats......

You won't believe it... Walk through the liquor store to the restaurant in the back. '70s panel decor. Excellent meat products. Good fries! Okay booze. Like travelling back in time.

My food was cold, both times I've been. They never asked if we wanted a second round of drinks. The Waitress rarely came by, and what they call a side dinner salad is pathetic. I cant believe Guy went there and claimed that it was amazing. The Steak was at least cooked to my liking, but it was not hot, and had very little flavor. You can get a better steak at Outback, which is sad.

I really can't say enough about this place. I was told about through a guy I was chatting with on a plane ride to Mew Mexico. I got a ride over and it was exactly as specified, small place crowded, but a perfect seat at the small but adequate bar. Reggie was my bartender and really nice. After chatting with a few of the locals I decided on the famous green chile cheeseburger. I would have gotten.bacon, but didn't want to mask the taste of the meat that was a comin. After a nice IPA I was brought my burger. 1/2 pound and a lovely flavor. Great smoky taste from the charbroiled perfect amount of spice from the chile and a sizable order of fries that came with it. I dressed it and ate with content. After enjoying my feast I was introduced to the owner George. Great guy I who knows how to make people feel welcome. I told him I liked the burger so much I was going to have another. He was flabbergasted that a guy of my size could manage I only weight 160 but I can eat. After polishing off my second buyer cooked perfectly the same and finishing my second IPA I asked for a shot of Jameson, jamie to his friends, I paid my very reasonable check, said my goodbyes and headed out from a place I knew I would be in again. To anyone that has the pleasure, enjoy the food, say hello to Regina and George and enjoy the taste of good well made food.

Guy Fiere u so disappoint me. I was ok with dive but the service and food was disgusting. We ordered their prime rib medium rare and the cut of beef served did not only taste old and tough but lacked the juices running out a prime rib. This prime rib was crying for help. We asked for a baked potato with cheese and the cheese was served were literally processed cheese slices that were torn in shreds. Whe the server came back to ask.how the food was i told her the meat tasted old. I saw her call over the owner and i could over hear her say "that's not possible" with the same belligerent demeanor she denied and couldn't fathom that the prime rib tasted old. I informed her that if she was so sure to taste it. The owner has the worst table side manners to the point i would call Gordon ramsey to come and do an episode of kitchen nightmares here. Monte Carlo has all the elements for it. Terrible food and its leading tv personality a belligerant owner with the worst and diva rude like manners. I would never come back here ever again.

Does not live up to the hype. We've been to other triple d places, and were disappointed by this one. They didn't knowmhownto make even a basic mixed drink, and my rib eye steak was well done instead of medium rare. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

I was visiting from the Bay Area and just had to try the place. We had so much fun there. It is old school which really makes the place! Black tufted round booths and dark wood paneling with pictures of Elvis on the walls. The staff and regulars were fun and the food was great! I had the Prime Rib which was amazing and it even came with a salad and Texas toast.

Great, great steak. And I had a cold so my taste buds were slightly dulled. Can't wait to go back healthy. Funky vibe inside, the way a steakhouse should be. The bar also made me a nice hot toddy to help with my cold, and help it did.

So yes, this place is a little dive, it's old, it's dark, it has a liquor store attached but this is one of my favorite places for a few reasons... The staff is always very friendly. Even when other guests aren't so nice, even when there's an issue with your food and even when they're crazy busy. I can choose a bottle of wine in the liquor store and have it corked and brought to me at my table and take the rest home if I don't finish it. Plus, they have a full bar. The french fries are made fresh and they are beyond good. The prices are great! There are some things on the menu that are a little pricey but I get a 10oz. sirloin with salad and a side for $12-$13! Definitely worth the try but stay away from Friday and Saturday nights, the wait can get a little long.

Unless this place is writing their own reviews, we really must be the odd men out here? WTH?! This place SERIOUSLY sucked! We only ate there because of Diners Drive Inns & Dives featured it and, man did we regret every second/penny of it! First, the steaks were minuscule, dry and tough, at best. The salad was literally only a few pieces of lettuce and a TINY sliver of tomato. The fries were limp and greasy and, the staff literally came off as, "stuck up." Also, the place was honestly a dump! A true measure of any restaurant is their restrooms. Check those out. I dare you! In fact, we darn near walked out the second we laid eyes on it! [so, so, so freaking sorry we didn't!] What's more, there wasn't one table they could sit us at as it was more of their rush hour. But, we understood. However, we did see one large booth both empty and available. Like normal folks, we politely requested it. The waitress sharply barked at us, "No! That's the owners table!" And, then she went on to leer at us as though we were three quarters stupid for even thinking to ask! WTH?! Seriously?! I'll tell you, few restaurants have left us livid by the time we've paid. This was CERTAINLY one of them! But, I suppose we're actually the ones to blame here. You know, for not just walking the hell out of there immediately once we saw the conditions and recognized our dismissive treatment. But again, we were slightly stoked about the feature on DD&D and, we really wanted to give it a chance. Lastly, I'll say this. Never once has ANY business I've EVER left a derogatory critique for on Yelp - sent in others to verbally attack me. But, this one certainty did. Look fellas, I'm sorry your establishment, staff and food sucked. But, I will not apologize for speaking the truth. So, quit sending in your minions to intimidate me and attempt to alter an honest critique. I will not sway. Regardless of how hostile and venomous the boys you send in can get.

I don't know why people leave bad reviews but the rib eye I had was cooked perfectly. I think people who can only eat meat well done and are used to fast food quality complain. It's never good to have steak well done anyways. Everyone who works there is nice and attentive even it gets pretty busy. (I was here on Tuesday.) The whole restaurant is retro and it feels like you are back in the 60's or 70's. We will be back when we come back to Albuquerque :)

This little "diamond in the rough" steakhouse is a gem! They offer incredible lunch weekly specials $7.95 people :) I have tried their burgers & fries, Greek Chicken, chicken fried steak, and of course their "Steaks" all were absolutely fantastic, along with the sweetest waitstaff which Im assuming who have been with Monte Carlo for years~~~ extremely friendly, attentive & always inviting waitstaff. This is a busy lunch spot with alot of working class(blue & white) that come together for the quick, delicious and no thrills and very affordable lunch! I have yet to dine for dinner but if you can get a steak for under $40 that's a steal in my world! I look forward to a casual relaxing evening of steak at Monte Carlo :) Monte Carlo has been around for years they dont need a remodel, they just need to tidy up the place a little bit, the awesome outdated decor is "Fabulous" that's what this diamond steakhouse represents "Old School feel Steakhouse" putting out stellar food' Monte Carlo is a national Landmark, you dont change what's been working all these years!!

I was thinking about passing up on this place mostly due to the valid Yelp reviews. I went to complete my perfect score of Diners Drive ins and dives restaurants in Albuquerque. After a read through the uninspired menu I decided on the Louie Special sandwich. Tough overcooked sliced beef with caramelized onions on a soft bun with sliced American cheese. Freaking yucky! Greasy and dried out at the same time. It needed catsup and A1 but it still sucked. The fries weren't horrible but it's really hard to mess up fried potatoes. The dining room is dirty and gritty and dated. It may have been cool in the 1940's but it's gross today, Just like the carpet. The waitress was a sweetheart. It's up to you to decide if the place is good. The reviews on this place are all over the map. My opinion is this place is a dump.

Best food. The flavor explodes in your mouth. Love the burger with fresh onion, tomato and lettuce. The fries are great also. Yummy.

Found a saltine wrapper in my salad. Evidence that they don't wash the salad bowls after each use or the salad making station is next to the trash? Steak and fries were good. Baked potato was very good.

I don't frequent steakhouses, but I do know good steak! Monte Carlo was one of my favorite stops in Albuquerque. Let me just start by saying that this ambience, as some reviewers have mentioned, is practically non-existent in the Southwest these days. It's a low-brow social situation, with high-brow foods to create a lasting impression. "Old School," I thought at first, and then I thought, "Where's my cigar?". Monte Carlo has aged as gracefully as the wines they serve. I think the bar is a nice component to the feel overall. I can just imagine watching a game, enjoying a drink, and having some of their amazing appetizers; instantly I am taken to my happy place! Picture frames of autographs, celebrities, memories, and local recognitions. Something about Monte Carlo is nostalgic, so is the charm that makes it a great place to dine either as a family or on a date. I loved the old timing feel, the roundabout booths, the friendly servers and the to-die-for New York strip - one of the best I've had... Ever. I loved the fries with the food, the abundant fried battered mushrooms (ugh, so damn good!), and the entire meal altogether... A sweet Arnold Palmer to sip up along the way. So much food, so generous with portions. On a Friday night, it was somewhat of a longer wait, like 30+ minutes but the food was out fast and it was all worth it. I cannot wait to be back. Overall, this place is on point.

A childhood and all time favorite, I used to come here as a child with my parents to eat all the time and continue to go eat here until this day! The burgers are delicious but my all time favorite is the steak with a side of green chile! Cant go wrong ordering anything on the menu tho! Try heading over on a Thursday during lunch to try some of the greek chicken! Its amazing. One of the best places in Albuquerque hands down.

Go here often for celebrations,I love the grilled chicken it's always tender and juicy. The baked potatoes can bake a little longer and wasn't fond of the bloody Mary but never been disappointed. My husband gets the steak here and always loves it which is good because he's a critic when it comes to his steak.I always forget to tell them no Texas toast which comes with the meals other than that I'm always satisfied.

Good steaks, and yummy appetizers. I like the zucchini in particular. The staff is nice. The place is kind of a dive, but don't let that fool you. Not really a good place to bring kids. They don't have a kids menu or kids cups.

Excellent food and great service Great place to get prime rib and rib eye. The prime rib is only served on certain days. Make sure you check with the restaurant. I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the restaurant could use a remodel.

My husband and I had dinner here on a Friday night. I figured it would be crowded and we arrived at 6 pm with no difficulty being seated. It was busy, but there were a few available tables (mostly for parties of 2). The interior was what I expected-nothing fancy--a steak house/bar, loud, but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other. We started with the Greek appetizer which had salami (the really soft kind), feta, olives, one dolma, and pepperoncinis. I had a Blue Moon and my husband had a glass of house Cabernet. We decided to share a meal since the steaks are so large. We ordered a medium rare 14 oz. ribeye with the rice pilaf and a salad. We ordered a second salad, as well. For dessert we had a slice of apple pie with vanilla ice cream on top. What can I say? Everything was good. Not fancy or pretentious at all. I have no complaints about the food, but don't except anything to be gourmet. I read in some review that the steaks are hand-cut and that may be true, but nothing else seemed housemade. But again, everything was good. Would I come back? Maybe. I think Paul's Monterey Inn has better food and is a little nicer, but still a throwback to the 1970s, like this place. I'm glad I finally tried it. The two of us, drinks, appetizer, shared main course, extra salad, and dessert spent ~$55 without tip.

Watched it on D, D & D... went tonight with friends from ABQ that had not heard of the place. WOW! I had the Porterhouse (as reccomended by Guy), and the rest had the Strip, the Rib-Eye & the Prime; we all shared bites & I must say, it is by far the best I've had in years! On par & if not better than the Palm & the old O'Briens in DC.

Bacon wrapped filet mignon is the best. Staff is awesome. I even enjoy coming to hang out at the little bar. It's nice to have a package liquor attached so we can grab a bottle to take home after dinner. If you come on a Friday be prepared for a wait in a small area but it is worth it.

Last night the husband and I went to Monte Carlo Steak House. We had a pretty good idea of what we were getting into, having read the reviews and driven by a couple times. In Los Angeles we used to frequent a steakhouse called Billingsley's, on Sawtelle ) yelp.com/biz/billingsley… ). It was old, and a bit worn at the edges, with a long bar where you could have your dinner and a huge dining room with lots of old patched booths. None of the wait staff had worked there for less than 30 years and the menu hadn't changed in all that time. We went for the big prime rib, but other stuff was good too. The cocktails were stiff and the clientele all regulars. We were looking for that in Albuquerque and we thought maybe we found it with the Monte Carlo. We were right. In front is a package liquor store, so we entered through the side door. The sudden darkness was blinding after being outside, but then my eyes got used to it and I realized I was standing by the bar, and there was the guy who must belong to that yellow Harley parked right outside the door. A really nice guy led us to a booth along the wall - it was the only table available, the place was packed. They were super busy, but a nice lady came over and took our order with a smile. Everything people have written about the food is correct. The salad is unremarkable, the bake potato, while yummy, you could easily reproduce at home. We didn't go there for those things, though. If we wanted awesome sides and a sophisticated ambiance, we'd go back to Vernon's. We went for the meat - and it was awesome! I had the prime rib special, medium rare. It was perfect, lots of meat, just the right amount of fat, warm and pink. Husband had the boneless rib eye, medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection. I had a bite of both and I didn't know which I liked better. I've had a lot of really good steak. Ray's the Steaks in Washington DC, The Pacific Dining Car in Santa Monica, CA, The New York Steakhouse at the JW Marriott in Bangkok, Thailand ... I could go on (notice I didn't mention Ruth's Chris? That cause they suck, I said it). The prime rib and the rib eye at Monte Carlo were on par with all of those that I listed. And ... here it comes ... the meat at Monte Carlo was better than the meat we had not too long ago at Vernon's. Oh, snap! Don't go to Monte Carlo for sides and salads and décor. Go for the meat. It will dance in your mouth.

I visited Monte Carlo steakhouse which is a restaurant in Albuquerque New Mexico on November 14th at 5:23pm .They offer great food and the atmosphere is expected from a restaurant like this. The appetizer was delicious and freshly baked to perfection :) . The time it took for our order of our appetizer to come out took less than about 3 minutes to be brought to our table . When I needed a refill my waitress didn't even ask me she just said "I'll get u another refill" and I didn't even need to ask that's good service . Now about my meal i ordered the Monte Carlo burger which is 3/4 ground beef with fries I thought it was totally amazing it was so delicious I ended up taking it home and it's going to make a awesome snack later I'm definitely coming back soon . Our server billy she was awesome and provided the very best service to me and my family tonight when you come here ask for her and you'll get world class service :) .I'd stand on a roof top and recommend Monte Carlo steakhouse to the city and surrounding areas perhaps the world.

I'm really surprised at the reviews this place gets. It's really not good at all. I've been in this dirty, dingy place a half dozen times, and every time tried something new hoping to discover what everyone raves about. The salad is lackluster, made with iceberg lettuce and the ranch tastes like the over processed crap that doesn't have to be refrigerated. I think McDonalds has the same stuff. The pork chops were thin and overpriced. You can get better pork chop meals from waffle house. The steak fingers are disgusting, the sirloin steak was tough, covered with fat & left me feeling sick the rest of the day. Texas toast? Its just like a fat slice of Wonder bread, and I'm pretty sure they even charged me extra for butter. Even the baked potato was terrible and I had to keep pulling foil out of my mouth because they cut it with the foil on. Really, for a place to be raved about so much, I would expect to enjoy it, but I'm done giving this place chances. It's almost the worst steakhouse I've ever been to.

Been here a few times, and it's progressively gone downhill. What used to be our third favorite steak place, MC keeps dropping down the list. These reviews saying 'unpretentious' is an understatement. Try dirty, dingy, and someone might want to dust the 1970's decorations. Don't get me wrong, the ribeye steak was good and cooked to my medium rare liking. But it was severely under seasoned, fatty and grisly. The (generally fluffy and perfect) baked potato had a rotten end and was the texture of sand, which couldn't be salvaged with butter and sour cream. I never got the green chile I ordered with it. Our appetizer of fried zuchinni and mushrooms and a cement-like batter crust. The growing crowd immediately next to the dining room is awkwardly staring at you to finish your food so they can be seated. No draft beers on tap, only bottles. The salad was decent, but the tomatoes were pink - not red- and flavorless. For $75, it was disappointing. And the liquor store is super sketch. On a positive note, our waitress was lovely and very kind. Good Lord I miss Great American Land and Cattle.

Saw this on television a week before visiting. We got the most simple looking steak I've ever seen. It looked like something you can cool on your own. But... MIND. BLOWN. Easily one of the greatest steaks I've ever tasted, and cried a little bit leaving in knowing its nowhere near where I live. If you're lucky enough to be in town, go there ASAP and enjoy the juiciest, most flavor filled simple steak ever.

Members of the CBOA Board of Directors ate a nice dinner with sufficient alcohol at the Monte Carlo on July 28 during the NASO 2014 Summit in Albuquerque. The Monte Carlo reminds me of Jocko's in Nipomo, CA. The tab for 11 was $300 plus tip (very good service earned a very good tip). Compared to what I'm used to paying in So. Calif. (at Flemmings, Ruth's Chris, etc.) the Monte Carlo was a good value. The Monte Carlo is curiously located behind a liquor store off of Hwy 66 (Central Ave.) near Old Towne ALB. For those with eclectic tastes in liquor you can purchase liquor in the liquor store and take advantage of the Monte Carlo's corkage fee and then immediately enjoy it with dinner (and not just wine either!). Steaks are usually cut smaller and thick to allow the juices to be sealed-in. At the Monte Carlo my 20 oz. steak was cut oddly -- very large and thin rather than smaller and thicker. As a result it may have been overcooked to my exact likes making it somewhatr difficult to cut (though I still ate it all). Because of the cut my medium rare was more towards medium-well. I dressed nicely (Tony Soprano shirt with kakhi's) for which I felt overdressed. Wear your levi's and boots or shorts and athletic shoes. Considering everything if I ever get back to The Duke City I'd eat at the Monte Carlo again.

First, let me say that my wife and I truly love this restaurant, but this is only for a particular kind of audience. The food here is not fancy, it will not be gracing the cover of food magazines with its beauty, but this place is simply a good old-fashioned steakhouse. The steaks here are big to borderline obnoxious, so hopefully you are in the mood for a serious meat fest. The steak comes with fries or baked potato, a salad or soup, and Texas toast. You will not walk away hungry or craving meat for quite some time. The steaks here are well cut with a well balanced amount of searing on the outside. No $40 steaks that are 90% charcoal at this restaurant. Even the sirloins here are tender. The decor, as you can see in the pictures, is something like you would find in your grandmother's attic, but don't let that distract you from the great eats.

I love this place!!!! Vinyl booths, under six dollar gin martinis, and red meat galore. What's not to love? Expect old school and you won't be disappointed. Expect hoity toity, and you won't be happy. Lunch for two: five martinis, 8oz bacon wrapped filet, chicken fried steak, and apple pie ala mode. Oh, two salads and Texas toast included. A big 68 bucks with tax. (Tip not included) Thank God we took the bus:)

I've been here a couple times now. This place is an enigma. The food is quite good, and that's the most important thing to me. The beer selection, being second most important, is also not bad; definitely not the best in town, but respectable. The service, being third, is hit or miss - one time it was quite good, the other, well, not so good. The waiter the second time just really didn't want to be there. He was attentive, I suppose, but I really got the feeling that he resented us asking for anything. Lastly, the atmosphere. Well, this place is dark, woody, and intimate. But it has been in ABQ for, approximately, 1,000 years, so it feels a bit run down. Not bad, not dirty, just not, well, shiny. Honestly, I don't care much about that. And, on the plus side, this place has a liquor store attached to the front of it. Pretty unique, and kinda cool. What pisses me off, however, if the smell of cigarette smoke from the liquor store. I'm not sure where that is coming from, but it is disgusting. It's not bad in the restaurant, but it's terrible to walk through or be around. That needs to be fixed! The first time I was here, I had an opportunity to talk to the owner for awhile. Wow, super nice! I actually love this place, and will certainly come back. But I would be much more inclined to do so and to bring visitors to this unique little piece of ABQ, if they curtailed the smoking.

Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, this back-of-the-liquor store steakhouse is certainly a dive! Steaks were good but the rest of the menu is where the good stuff is. Service was a little slow, but the atmosphere was fun and classic dive.

Blue collar atmosphere with a full bar and serving amazing steaks. They have homemade french fries, homemade baklava and more. You're not going to get a hoity toity mixed green salad here it's iceberg. You are going to get a great steak, steak sandwich or green chile cheeseburger

Ordered the Monte Carlo Burger and my husband ordered the Rib eye. I thought his steak was amazing, but he tells me he's had better. My burger was good but its one of those meals you immediately regret when not able to move and beginning to get gassy. 20 minutes after we ate we had the poops. I don't think we'd go there again, but the food was the stick to your rib kind that if you love you should at least try once.

My wife and I and another couple decided a burger for lunch was in order and we had heard positive things about the Monte Carlo. So here is my unbiased opinion. The fries served with the burger were very good. Maybe not the best but certainly in the top-5. The burger was very good, not great but what was a little disappointing was that we ordered the green chili cheese burger and I thought the green chili was blah and boring. Barely able to detect it and no zip whatsoever. Otherwise, I ordered mine medium and it was perfectly done. The burger was generous and the fries were equal to a couple of potatoes... lots! My wife would have rated this lower but she ordered hers well done and that is what she got. Not my fault that she "has to have her meat cooked all the way". Must try the steaks.... at some point. I might go back but not with my wife.

The stench from the filthy bathrooms ruined my appetite. I hope the kitchen was not as dirty as the bathrooms. Will never eat there again. What was Guy F eating when he went to this place?

I am a firm believer in the importance of atmosphere and the Monte Carlo has an abundance of it! This place serves as a substitute for my old favorite....The Townhouse. I know, the Townhouse has reopened, but it isn't the same. Very sad. I don't think this is the best steakhouse in Albuquerque but they have good steaks, prime rib, and burgers and it is a ton of fun. They will accomodate a large party (with a reservation) which makes it a great place for a celebration. Full bar and package liquors attached. It is definitely a relic, but for those of us from Albuquerque, it's a fun reminder of growing up here. Check it out!! It's fun!

Solid. Very old school joint, without feeling worn out or tired. Surprisingly full at 4:30. Packed by six on a week day. Strong ass drinks. Good steaks. Giant pile of various fried things appetizer. Service was fine. What's not to like?

Ok no no no! Went to this place because it was on diners, drive in, dives the show. Plus we were meeting a friend. It's located in a shady area kinda scary. It's cool that its a liquor store front and you walk to the back and it's a restaurant. It has an urban cowboy (the movie) vibe to it minus the cowboys and two stepping. I ordered the bacon wrapped steak. It was dry and non flavorful. Sorry but it's a no in my opinion.

Great place in the heart of the South Valley. My wife and I escaped from our boys for the night. I was in the mood for a steak, she was in the mood for anything. I didn't tell her we were coming here to have dinner until we pulled up into the parking lot. Upon arrival, there were some biker guy out front smoking. The first question my wife asks is "Where did you bring us"? We were fairly greeted when we walked in. The seating hostess looked a bit over worked but in the end seated us right away. Our waitress seemed a bit mean and grumpy, but after carrying conversation she was very nice and kept our drinks full. I ordered the 1 lbs sirloin, and my wife ordered the small sirloin. I ordered a baked potato, she ordered the fresh cut fries. We also shared mozzarella cheese sticks with Ranch. These were very good. Our steaks were cooked perfect. They were juicy and trimmed of almost all the fat. The fries and baked potato were also perfect. I picked this place because it's known for its great steaks and also for it's relaxed atmosphere. It's been there forever too. We were in the mood for a quiet, relaxed steak dinner and the Monte Carlo Steakhouse made it happen.

A few years ago, some firefighter friends brought me to dinner here when I was in town. If there's one thing I've learned over the years it's that firefighters (and cops for that matter) know good food! Since that first visit I've been here a handful of times as I visit ABQ fairly often. Monte Carlo is unlike any other steakhouse I've been to. It's completely unpretentious, has very reasonable prices, and incredibly yummy food. I love that the dining room looks like it came straight out of the 50s or 60s. They aren't trying to impress you with the decor; instead they are trying to feed you delicious food. Have I had better steaks elsewhere? Why, yes I have. But I've also paid through the nose for them. Have I had a better steak for the price? No, I have not. If you are looking for a good, no-frills, steak with perhaps a baked potato and side salad, then give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.

This place was recommended to me by the owners of the motel I was staying and they didn't get it wrong! It was a great fun casual atmosphere and the Prime Rib I had was absolutely delicious. I washed it down with an insanely cheaply priced Australian red (that same bottle would be easily $40-50 in an Australian steakhouse). Add the great service and the great company provided by other patrons I had a brilliant meal that I'll never forget. Great food and great fun.

In the battle of the old-school ABQ steakhouses, Monte Carlo passes but is not as good as my fave, Paul's Monterey Inn. Quick rundown: Ambiance: super casual - you seat yourself. Food: decent cuts of steak, but nothing special about the preparation or taste. Pretty much a steak that you could cook for yourself at home. Drinks: strong, just how they should be poured. I enjoyed my meal there, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't like I'd go out of my way to come here again. I guess I just like the classier vibe of Paul's. As a matter of fact, after dinner, we went to Paul's for a couple more drinks.

Steak: 20oz. Porter House Steak Cooked: Medium Price:$28.95 Result: Dry & flavorless. Poor quality meat. Horrible experience. (Just order yourself the texas toast and put A-1 sauce on it, its way cheaper and will taste about the same Monte Carlos liquors & steak house you definitely have to be liquored up to eat their steaks.

I think this is the first 1 star review I've given on Yelp. I was seriously disappointed in Monte Carlo, all around. I moved to NM 3 years ago and my husband (born and raised in NM) has spoken about Monte Carlo in the past. I have gotten at least 4 people telling me to go there, not to mention the Triple D episode. The atmosphere is dive-y, and that wasn't at all the issue. We came in and hung at the bar for a beer unril our table was ready (about 15 minutes, and the bartender was great) We sat at the table and the server came around after 10 minutes or so and asked what we wanted. Again, she was really busy so I was not affected too much. But the service was minimal at best. I ordered the surf and turf and my husband ordered the special NY Steak. NOTHING was good about my plate, the steak was blander than bland. For comparision, I cook alot at home and hate adding salt to a dish...yet my husband pointed out that I added more salt (and pepper!) than he'd ever seen me add. Seriously, it was the first time I added salt and pepper to anything, and it did not help. The french fries were so old and dry that it was hard to eat them. Also they added some sort of hot sauce to the cocktail sauce...I hate tabasco and could not dip the shrimp into it at all. So dry shrimp. Overall I felt the dishes were Denny's quality at best and not worth the price we paid. I will not go back, and I am disappointed.

Get the bacon wrapped fillet. There may be other things on the menu, don't know, don't care. Just get this special steak and enjoy. Best value for steak I've had in ABQ. Atmosphere is always entertaining. Other items, sides, etc, could be better, but I don't come here for side salad or fries.

I've been to the Monte Carlo Steakhouse several times when I travel to ABQ. I first became aware of it through a co-worker who had seen it on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. This is not a fancy place, but they do make good steaks at a reasonable price. Plus, one of the benefits of being in the back of a liquor store is - they have a great selection at the bar. I've never had a bad meal there. I just try to keep my expectations right for this place. This is a decent place to chill out and have some decent grub after a long day of working. Will I be back? Yeah, next time I am in ABQ.

Stop #9 on the 9 restaurant/10 hour eating my way through New Mexico extravaganza. The Monte Carlo is both a liquor store and a steak house, how cool is that? I'm sure you have seen those license plate frames that say things like, "I'd rather be fishing," or "I'd rather be playing baseball." Well, my ideal license plate frames would say, "I'd rather be eating," "I'd rather be drinking," and "I'd rather be sleeping." Monte Carlo Liquors & Steak House hits two of the three things I would "rather be doing." The only way Monte Carlo could get better would be to add a hotel...that would be the serious trifecta! At the point we were driving from Santa Fe to Albuquerque we had been eating for 8 hours and were approaching our food capacity, but there was no way I was going to miss an opportunity to eat in a combination liquor store/steak house. We walked into the liquor store, through the door in the back, and there we were in a 1970's style steak house. Amazing! Here is what we ordered: 16 oz. house margarita ($5) - Not the best margarita I have ever had, but not the worst either. NY steak special ($18.95) - This included a standard coffee shop salad (i.e. a bowl of salad dressing with some iceberg lettuce floating on top,) a large and perfectly cooked baked potato, a perfectly seasoned and expertly cooked 14 oz. boneless NY steak, and a large slice of Texas toast. Was it the best steak I have ever had? No, but for the price it was damn good and a really good value too. It is important to note that the menu points out all of the fried appetizers (which I think is ALL of the appetizers) are served with a trough of ranch dressing. I mention this because it speaks to the overall vibe of the place, the style of food, and the type of patrons who frequent the restaurant. Folks, this isn't Craftsteak. That being said, it was well worth the drive from Santa Fe to sit in a red "leather" booth and eat in this old school steakhouse. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, and the service is outstanding. The kitsch factor is high here and I definitely had a blast!!! I highly recommend taking a trip back in time (or at least through the liquor store door) to the Monte Carlo.

My husband and I went there with another couple. We all ordered italian dishes. We asked for bread and were charged quite a bit extra. Everyone knows you can't eat italian without bread!! Obviously, they just don't get it. Besides the mediocre food, we had an abrasive waitress who verbally abused us all night......no, she wasn't funny.

Five stars for originality! Thank you Yelpers for this recommendation. My boyfriend and I were on a road trip from Los Angeles, and though we don't eat a lot of meat, something about the Southwest gave us both a dinner craving of STEAK. I yelped Steak in Albuquerque and decided to go based off the Liquor Store/Steakhouse combo. I added some photos. Sorry, we don't know the differences between the different kinds of steak, but we split the the New York combo ($18.95) and it definitely satisfied our random craving! Service was friendly and helpful with our lack of steak knowledge.

Monte Carlo Liquors & Steak House was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. The Monte Carlo is one of the most unique businesses that you will find. The front part of the building is a liquor store and connected to the back of the building is a steak house. I went to Monte Carlo on a Saturday evening and had quite a wait. It's a pretty small restaurant and has a very small bar as well. The restaurant probably has 15 to 20 tables and the bar only seats a handful of people. It was consistently busy that evening, from the time I got there up until I left. My server was helpful and friendly and suggested I try a steak instead of one of their green chile cheeseburgers. I ordered a 10oz Ribeye, which came with a dinner salad, baked potato, and a slice of Texas Toast. The steak was pretty good but more on the average side then spectacular. The Texas Toast was really good and the salad and baked potato were just average. Unique restaurant, helpful and friendly service, and a decent steak, give Monte Carlo Liquors & Steak House an above average rating of four stars.

The front part of the building is a liquor store and connected to the back of the building is a steak house. My wife and I split a 20oz. porterhouse with fries and a salad with an appetizer of deep fried mushrooms. Had a glass each of the house cab. All I can say is if you like charbroiled then you will love it. We knew it would be busy so went a little before 6 pm and we were seated right away. Our waitress was very patient answering all of our first time to a restaurant questions. Everything prepared exactly to order. Fast and good service. We loved the place and will be back anytime in ABQ. First class old school dive. Love it.

We've eaten here twice, both for Wyoming Cowboy bowl games, on Guy Fieri's recommendation. The neighborhood is rough, the clientele is mainly bikers, and they are totally cool. The food is down-home, simple, but perfectly cooked and served in a gracious environment. Go for the prime rib with the horseradish, off the hook cooked and succulent. We love this place for its un-pretentious atmosphere and true blue food.

Ate here while we driving LA to Chicago on Route 66. Great meat and sides. We had the prime rib and big steak. The prime rib was very good. The steak meat was good, but I wish it had some chili rub on it or something more southwest like. The place is slow and hard to get a table on busy nights. Great local flavor.

Interesting place to visit. The restaurant is behind a packaged liquor. Seriously, you'd never know they were cooking a mean steak behind those beer fridges. They know how to cook a slab of beef.

Okay, if upon hearing that this is a steakhouse/liquor store you think "awesome!" and when realizing they actually serve delicious food you think "double awesome!" THEN this is the place for you! Go and bask in the glory of your steak filled meal! You'll love every minute and regret that you don't actually live in Albuquerque (or at least that's how I feel). BUT if you saw this restaurant on TV and think that because a way too blond chef got superb service, you should get the same...you aren't ready to handle the awesomeness and will just end up leaving an undeserved negative review. LOVE THIS PLACE!

The best steaks in town (aside from my house). Good enough on every count - consistently - which is more than I can say for any other place. Clean enough, service is friendly enough, food is GREAT, and the atmosphere is perfect. We went there for our post-wedding dinner. Porterhouse. Damn.

Saw this place inn DDD and had to stop in while passing through New Mexico. It lived up to the hype. Awesome steak sandwich and Ortega burgers. Told the server about our road trip and he gave us a couple shirts. Had a great time and would definitely go again.

With all the mixed reviews for the Monte Carlo, I can say the bad reviews are unfounded as my visit was as expected; an older restaurant that has remained the same for years and years and that is a GOOD thing. George and Louis Katsaros, run a liquor store up front and a timeless steakhouse in the back complete with a simple menu of meat for meat lovers that really cannot be found at a chain restaurant. You will enjoy your food and atmosphere of the 1970's or earlier. I especially got a kick out of the old school Las Vegas curved red leather booths! Go there. Thanks George.

This very unique restaurant in Albuquerque was quite a surprise. In a area I would have not usually ventured to , I totally enjoyed the entire experience. I truly enjoyed talking with both George and my server Beverly who did an outstanding job in making me feel comfortable and making suggestions as to what was great for that day. I ended up having the new york strip with green chilies which was an outstanding meal. For anyone looking for a unique, truly authentic local Albuquerque restaurant I would recommend a quick stop by.

Everything was good except for the staple, steak! Environment was as expected so not a big deal. Service was fantastic. Portions were unbelievable including the baked potato. The problem was the steak. Not as fresh as a steak can be and very bland. I had to put steak sauce on it to finish. Not a good sign for a new York strip which should be natural juicy with flavor. The locals love this place though so more power to them. Folks from Texas well not so much.

We were excited to try this place as there are no DDD places where we live. So we stopped here on a road trip to my parent's place during Christmas vacay. It was really sad. I got the kabob and it was so incredibly dry. No tzakiki sauce?! wtf?! My husband got a steak and only bothered to finish it because we needed road fuel. This was a totally worthless experience.

We had heard of the place when some out-of-towners asked to go there since they had seen it featured on one of the food channels but it was closed when they wanted to go. We are rarely in that part of town but we started getting hungry heading home one night & decided to stop in. As soon as we walked in we got the sense this place has a very loyal following. It has the comfy feel of restaurants from the old days - welcoming & not pretentious but with food good enough to keep families coming back for generations. There is a small bar near the entrance if you feel like a drink or several. We started off with a basket of onion rings (very good, old-fashioned style) and had a green chile cheeseburger. Everything was very tasty - simple food done right. The service was very good and friendly. The staff makes you feel right at home and you will leave satisfied and full.

We saw this place on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and were visiting the area so we decided to try it out. I definitely would classify this place as a dive. We walked in and everyone in the place looked at us...we obviously were not regulars, ha ha. It does have a unique atmosphere and you can tell it is family-run and full of frequent visitors. I ordered the Green Chile Cheeseburger and must say that is was pretty stinkin' good. The burger is huge and the green chile sauce is amazing...just enough kick to make your tongue happy. The fries that come with it were very delicious as well. However, my wife ordered a steak and was not impressed at all. First of all, the steaks are very expensive. The steak itself was nothing special. It was good, but not much better than a steak you'd grill at home. We had our two small children with us (3,5) and there is not really much for them on the menu. Probably not a place to take your kids. Overall, it was a neat experience but perhaps Guy was a little overdramatic on his show.

My pork kabob was absolutely delicious. So tender! Service is okay, hard to get waitresses attention to fix an improper cooked steak. I was done eating before the order was fixed. When properly cooked everything was great.

I am pretty sure the burger I ate was pretty fabulous. It was hard to tell because the ambiance was freaking amazing and anything I put in my mouth was going to seem awsome.. Monte Carlo is totally a throw back type of place. It is as if it were in some sort of time capsule for the last 50 years. This place is a must stop for any person who loves a good dive. giddy up!

The service and prices were great. The food was ok. I had a Green chili burger cooked almost to perfection. But, the chili tasted frozen. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was terrible. The greek platter appetizer was so-so. The feta was a little too salty. The fried zuchini was amazing! Went with a group of 15. We all got our food at the same time. The waitress was great. She had a hard time splitting up our bill, but that's not her fault. Typical Albuquerque friendly restaurant. I'll go back.

I was reluctant to enter the side entrance that looked sketchy! Once inside, the place hasnt been updated since the 70s but is charming with memorabilia on the walls. The important part is the food of course which was great. Best steak sandwich I have had in a very long time. The fries are also perfect, fresh cut and greesy! Great prices for what you get. Good service. Only complaint is the ice tea isnt fresh brewed. Great place for a reasonable steak.

Terrible food. Got the pork kabob and mom got the Tuesday chicken fried steak special. Salad was a little warmer than I like and so was the dressing. The kabob was very heavy handed on both the thyme and lemon and was dry and overcooked. The chicken fried steak wasn't browned and tasted like raw flour. Sent it back and asked for a new one. The new one was even worse and when we alerted the management she said, "that's how we cook them here." Won't be going back. I wish I could give them zero stars, but in all fairness the french fries and diet coke were acceptable.

So, the Griswald's adventure of eating across the middle of the US continued to Monte Carlo Liquors and Steak House. What a bonus. Good food, good drink prices and we walked in through the liquor store just to get the full experience. My steak was good, my wife's Green Chili Burger was awesome. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't drinking and I don't do wine. Otherwise, we could have walked into the liquor store to choose our own wine and just bring it back to the table so they could pop the cork and add it to our bill. No corking fee. Reminded me of the same feel I used to get from the Turf Club (san diego) back in the day, before it got invaded by the Hipster crowd.

Went to eat here on a Friday night because I was craving their Monte Carlo Green Chile Cheeseburger. What a DISAPPOINTMENT! The chile had neither heat nor flavor. I had to add the raw onions just to give it some taste. The patrons at the next table were drunk, loud, and cursing, and Management did absolutely nothing about it. I left with my head hung down since I had decided to over-ride my husband's suggestion of Mexican food for this place and I was too embarrassed to look him in the eye after that dinner.

Best green chile cheese burger in town, and probably 2nd or 3rd best in the state (I still haven't been to Bobcat, hence the probably). This place is billed as a steak house, and I've never tried their steak. I can't really say I want to either. Maybe I'm scared, but I can't imagine it stacking up to a grass-fed, local and organic ribeye from Jenny James. But that's just me, and I'm not here to write about their steaks that I've never tried. I'm here to write about the GCCB. I first came here for a work related Xmas party a couple years ago and was impressed right away by the shadiness of the bar patrons, the fact that it's tucked away in the back of a liquor store, and the god-awful decor. I knew right away I was in for something special. The burgers are excellent, and served with a massive plate of fries that will put you in a food-coma. Someone mentioned that they wouldn't bring a date here; well I have and it was a hit! Something off the beaten path, adventurous, spontaneous...just what we needed to have an exciting evening.

Traveling frequently to Albuquerque for business for a decade, I've heard about Monte Carlo several times. I'm not a beef eater, so I never tried it out. After they were on "Triple D", I saw all the Greek stuff on the menu and knew I had to try it. It's everything the Yelpers say it is; a dive-y steakhouse in the back of a liquor store. It's like going back in time, and reminds me of the vinyl booth restaurants that my grandparents used to go to in the 70's. I was with three colleagues, and they all had steaks, while I had the pork kabob. My fellow diners loved their steaks, and my slouvaki was the real deal. I just wished that I had ordered rice, instead of the boring potato. We all started with their great shrimp cocktail and had salads with the housemade ranch dressing. Very tasty. Service was somewhat gruff, but we expected it. I'll definitely go back.

My last trip here we had a group of 14 people for my dad's birthday dinner. This is a dark greasy dive in the hood at the back of a liquor store. But don't be a-scared. The salad simple iceburg. The menu has some greek selections. I should have ordered a steak, I ordered the pork chops. Two large bone in pork chops and fresh cut fries, the pork chops were too dry to really enjoy. The green chile cheese burger looked good, a thick grilled patty. Get there early or make reservations, although that can depend on who you talk to if they actually take them, or else you may be stuck waiting especially on the typically busy Thurs, Fri and Sat nights.

Between a three and a four rating. Burger and steak were very tasty. Prices reasonable. Service slightly less than average (never checked on us). I would definitely eat there again when in Old Town, but wouldn't go out of my way. Next time I feel like drinking, this will be the place.

This is the perfect defintion of a hole in the wall. I didn't even know where the entrance was because it looked like a service exit. Pretty crowded and small inside (think steakhouse in the 80's). I ordered the green chile cheesburger, the hubby the prime. Burger was ok, I've had better, and the fries pretty good. My husband like the prime, but not like Paul's Monterey which he swears by. The best part was the app. Deep fried goodness! Mushrooms and zucchini. Yum! Service was good once we were seated. The service at the bar leaves a lot to be desired. And it's not because they were busy, the bartenders just looked like people you don't want to say the wrong thing to. And make sure you bring your own limes because "they don't have any." Tecate with a lemon?! That's craziness.

Sadly, I am posting my first negative review. There was a small group of us and we went here for a little Xmas dinner. We did call ahead and make a reservation. I have to say it was one disaster after another and I really had been looking forward to eating here. I had heard good things about this steakhouse and I really do love a good steak. To start with the salad was very plain and worse yet, ICEBURG lettuce! Ok not a deal breaker. But the filet mignon was supposed to be medium and it was so well done! It was shriveled up and not a bit of pink left. I was actually embarrassed for this establishment it was soooooo BAD. My attitude was "well thank God I didn't have to pay for it! " If I had to pay for it I would have sent it back. The service was lacking in that NO ONE asked how anything was..... not once did ANY ONE check back with us. Also the baked potato was on the tiny side.....again nothing special that you can't get at Wendy's for 99c. The bread that came with the meal was very ......shall we say, "uninspired"..... think Texas toast. I can assure you that I don't have unrealistic expectations but for $27 for a Filet Mignon, I do expect something better that what I received. My friend had another type of steak but it was overcooked as well. She ordered rare and it was really about a medium well. Her fries were not only "ugly" ((that is the only way to describe them)) but they were greasy. I don't know if I will try this place again or not but in good faith I could not recommend it.

Saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It definitely is a dive!!! Located behind a liquor store. Great! That's why it got five stars. Great ribeye steak. Nothing fancy. Service was a little slow and they were late with on of our party's orders, but they were busy. It is definitely worthy of the feature on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. Would recommend it as a stop for cross country travellers looking for a story to tell. I would eat there again my next trip to Albuquerque.
