Named after the style of chairs that accompany the dining tables, Los Equipales intrigued us with their quaint charm. Although we found the appetizers and side dishes to be bland and unimaginative, we were very pleased with our main course (the combination plate). The skirt steak was delicious as is their guacamole. Unfortunately their wine & beer only drinks seemed watered down and they were over-priced for what we got. But their customer service is top notch....yeah a middle of the road experience.

Authenticity, delicious, nostalgic...what else? I'm trying to think of what other adjectives I can throw out there to describe our experience just recently. We walked in for a Valentine's dinner expecting to wait for a while. We waited for about five minutes and then we had a comfy booth. The atmosphere in the dining room is low lighting with red pin hanging lights. It's a little weird but it works. We found this place because the outside is strange and looks like a 'mafia' movie hang out. It has this tall wall all the way around, it looks like it could be an abandoned business but the well kept signage makes you more inquisitive. They have a very limited beer and wine selection (Modelo, red wine, and white wine), so if that is a big draw for you, then you might need to make peace with it or choose another location. I had the skirt steak plate and my fiance had the corn fungus tostadas (they have a sexier name but that's literally what it was). We were happy campers! Great flavors all around. Then we had the Cafe de Olla and Tres Leches cake. There are no words!! If I was doing a happy dance with the beans (made like my Abuelita use too) the dessert portion of our meal was pure perfection! Thank you Los Equipales. I can't wait to go back and try other items on their menu.

Strange place, we left without trying the food after we found out they would not honor our card from our local public radio station ($10 off what was going to be a $75 meal). Expensive, weird vibe when they wouldn't seat us for 10 minutes even though they were mostly empty on a Friday night. We won't be heading back, even if the food does sound good!

Easily the best authentic Mexican food I've had in Albuquerque, possibly anywhere. Everything on the menu is top-notch. Chips and salsa comes with three types of sauce, each delicious. The shrimp cocktail is incredible. They know how to do seafood, but I would recommend you try the Tostadas de Huitlacoche at least once. The staff is the friendliest I've come across and the decor is very comfortable and clean. This place is an absolute gem. Can't recommend it enough.

Best restaurant in ABQ and best kept secret! My family and I love love love this place. It is super quirky and hidden. You kind of feel like you are in Mexico with it's gated area and hidden restaurant. The service is always excellent and the food always fantastic. We all live in other states but when we come home to ABQ this is the first restaurant that we all want to go back to right away.

It's a mixed bag. I loved my chicken enchilladas, Christmas style. The beans weren't that great, but the rice was okay. But half the time I am not sure I am can even eat meat anymore. I suspect in a few more years I'll be totally vegetarian. And there's not a single thing on this menu that doesn't have meat or fish in it. Fish, for me, is a non-starter. I just can't eat it, and haven't in 25 plus years. But that's their specialty, and all my friends eat it, so it was a happy medium. Most of all, I loved how you cannot SMELL the fish here. At all. Friends who had fish enjoyed it, except one dish that was described as bland. The chips are good. Of the 3 salsas that were served, only one was good. One was okay. The other left a questioning look on everyone at the table's face. The margaritas were disappointing. The veggie plate literally had half a carrot and 4 pieces each of cucumber and jicama for four people. It was a little befuddling, and caused our entire table to agree to order chips and salsa at all (we were hungry) which seemed a little, well, gauche for such a place. So overall, we spent more than $130 for four people to leave somewhat satisfied and somewhat not. Service was fine. Food delivery was fast after ordering. But what wasn't great, really wasn't. So, we'll go back and see if we somehow missed something on this extremely slow night. Disappointing considering all the fabulous reviews. We had hoped for more.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised that there hasn't been as many yelp reviews as this place deserves. After debating over places to each for lunch, I decided to choose this place because of the seafood. The restaurant is very large and it can be a bit confusing figuring out where to park (we accidentally ended up parking at the back of the restaurant). Considering that it was a Friday afternoon, the restaurant seemed pretty empty and quiet. The service was great, with the waitress occasionally checking up on us and frequently providing free soda refills. I love anything with seafood, so I was pretty excited to try the ceviche. The ceviche was served in a large bowl with stacks of marinated fish, tomato, avocado and pieces of tortilla chips. While it was aesthetically pleasing to the eye, I've had better ceviche. It's still pretty good, especially with the hot sauces but at times, the fish did not taste as fresh as I would have liked. That being said, GET THE SOUP OF THE SEVEN SEAS. It's the best. Consisting of a mix of shrimp, mussels, a HUGE scallop, clam in a wonderful, piping hot seafood broth, if you'll be missing out on some quality food if you don't get this. The soup comes in a big bowl with a side rice, which is quite filling. I will definitely come back for the soup. yummmmmmmmm

We found this restaurant by typing "best Mexican restaurant in ABQ" into google. It was! I had shrimp enchiladas that had so much shrimp, they just fell out! Fabulous flavor! Husband had skirt steak that was incredibly seasoned--perfect! The fajitas were unbelievable. You can also have fresh fish. All the sauces are made fresh and on site. The beans are perfect. I really cannot rave enough! It is in a neighborhood and has a lovely atmosphere. You must try it!

We had a delicious shrimp dinner and very good mole. The service was prompt and attentive. This might be the best Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque. It's just about the only Mexican restaurant with fresh seafood. BTW, make sure you enter on Jefferson St. If you just drive by on Adams St, it will look closed. (It is closed on Mondays.)

First, this is a *Mexican* restaurant, Veracruz cuisine. Not New Mexican. If you're not from around here, the distinction is critical. Best Coffee in the World. Seriously. You must try the cafe de la olla. You will not regret it. I have friends that don't drink coffee who now order this as soon as they sit down. The three of us can easily drink a pot of this stuff over dinner. It is ^&%$^*$* amazing!!! I bring business associates here for lunch from out of town. I tell them about the coffee and they don't believe me. One sip and they're converts. They insist on coming here now whenever they are in town. Call ahead if you want some with lunch as it takes a little while to brew a pot. Veracruz style is different from a lot of other Mexican food. Lots of seafood. The tomatillo salsa they make is fabulous as well. Dinner: I recommend the Ceviche. You can share this easily with another person. Don't forget the hot sauce and mariscos sauce they provide. The queso fundido is yummy as well. You'll want to share this. Homemade guacamole, if you like it. I do. I like the Huachinango de Mojo de Ajo, and anything from the del Ranchero section is good. I like the steak Rancero with its chiles and veggies, but the Tampiqueno or the fajitas are good as well. If you're feeling adventurous, try the Tostadas de Huitlacoche. Tastes like a cross between corn and mushrooms. Really good. They have a rellenos dinner special sometimes. Get them Lunch: The chicken enchiladas are popular--and good. Try the Pollo en Mole too. Dessert: The flans are good. They had a seasonal pumpkin flan in October that was fantastic. I can't recommend the tres leches cake. It just doesn't measure up to the rest of the menu. Very plain, almost tasteless. The picture of the woman and the monkey is kind of creepy. But don't let that keep you away. The only drawback is that this place can be kind of hard to find. It's inside it's own walled compound. I got totally lost the first time. But don't give up, you won't regret it.

We flew in from out of town and our concierge highly recommend this place. It's a Saturday afternoon around 230, I know it's an odd time, but not one other customer was there. The place is cute, but the minute I see flies hovering around it immediately turns my stomach! I ordered the fried chicken fluted tacos, I thought they tasted like beef so I asked my husband to taste them, he did and as he was chewing I heard a loud crunching sound. To our surprise there was a huge piece of glass in the taco! I think that says enough. I told the waiter and he apologized and gave me 20% off (-$1.98 total - wow thanks a lot) the carne asada I ordered to replace the glass filled tacos....it doesn't seem like much for glass in your food. And on another note....what Mexican restaurant charges for chips and salsa? The waiter was nice, but it's hard to overcome a huge piece of glass in your food! I would avoid this place if I was you!

The shrimp enchiladas were pretty good but the cafe de la olla...OMFG! You MUST order that if nothing else. It's incredible. It doesn't need cream or sugar...just trust me and drink it as is. I gotta say that this is a bit expensive for mexican food. Perhaps I'm spoiled being from LA where we can stuff our faces with good mexican food for under $10.

I've been to Los Equipales a couple of times now and I want to like it so badly because there are few places in Albuquerque that attempt to serve authentic Mexican food including seafood. Also the people are very friendly and the decor is eclectic and appealing. Unfortunately, they get so much of the food wrong, in part because they cut corners on quality and freshness of ingredients. The seafood in particular is highly variable in quality. The ceviche is totally uninspired, uses long-frozen red snapper with tasteless tomatoes and with tortilla chips jammed into a glass with the fish to make the portion seem larger -- I love ceviche of all kinds but I just don't get this one! Our entrees were served with a frozen veggies mix that had just been boiled and served still watery and tasteless -- it's just not that hard to get fresh broccoli and carrots and caulifower! Unfortunately, I couldn't resist ordering seafood even though I should have been tipped off by the fact that the following species were listed as having come from the Gulf of Mexico: salmon, sea bass, and tilapia. None of those three non-Gulf species belong in this restaurant either, and I hope the owners rethink the decision to serve those or any other seafood that is not top quality and freshness. Carne a la Tampiqueno: very good. Chips and salsa: good, but small servings of salsa. Guacamole: good and fresh, but oddly vinegary, and small portions. Shrimp: Fantastic. Shrimp con Salsa de Tequila recommended. Arroz marinero: terrible disappointment -- the shrimp and scallop were fantastic, but the mussels, oysters, and calamari were all less than fresh-tasting (to put it politely). Wine margaritas: blah -- please get actual tequila. Snapper: not very fresh, smallish portion; but Veracruzana sauce is good. Deserts: flan, tres leches cake, brownie ala mode -- all just ok, but they should be great here. SUMMARY: Stick to ordering land-based cuisine (with possible exception of shrimp), or just save up your money for a trip to actual Mexico. Five stars for intentions but the execution falls flat.

I came here with a big group of people and I don't think a single person had a bad thing to say about their meal. This is by all means a crowd pleaser and was even described to me as such by the concierge at the Hyatt. The sangria was awesome and they were good about keeping it flowing and just every dish is delicious. A good friend of mine who goes there a lot and who took us, said that she orders something different every time and has yet to find a dish that she didn't enjoy. Start with their house specialties and the Ceviche for an appetizer. On their website, there is even a coupon for a free appetizer, so you have nothing to lose. You won't regret it, so get your butt over there!

Back by Highland HS, this place looks like entering a secure compund. Inside the mood is serene and cool with flowers and sky lights. Vera Cruz style mexican menu. Our table all had different fish dishes and each was fresh tasting with interesting sauces that were light enough to let the flavor shine through. Dessert and their special coffee was a marvelous cap on the meal. Service was attentive and efficient. Definitely a place I will go again!

Went to Los Equipales for the first time in a few years ( its kind of hidden) last night. I should have stayed away. The host told us she'd have a table in 5 minutes. 20 minutes later, I asked for an update and was immediately seated in a room of empty tables. We ordered and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, an hour after ordering, we were served cold food that clearly had been plated some time earlier. When I approached the host, she told me she wouldn't charge for my entree. I informed her I didn't want to pay for anything ( our 2 drinks and $5 chips) given the service. She then accused me of being rude. She then belabored how unfortunate it was that we wouldn't even try the food. Really? When we suggested that if they couldn't manage one additional table, perhaps she shouldn't have seated us. She said she was only trying to accommodate us, blamed us for not having a reservation ( didn't realize we needed one), and negated our complaint by saying it was a kitchen problem. Ummm, isn't the kitchen a huge part of a restaurant? She offered us dessert ( yes, when we hadn't even eaten our cold entrees) as a 'gesture'. I was tempted to offer her a gesture of my own. My advice: stay away from this overpriced, tackily decorated, and ridiculously ill prepared haven of bad service.

I had the Filete de Huachinango (Red Snapper) which was alright, nothing special. The sauce was rich in flavor but the overwhelming taste shadowed the flavor of the snapper. Others in my group had the Parrillada de Mariscos, the Arroz Marinero, and the Carne a la Tampiquena. The Parrillada was my two friends favorites and to them the dish didn't disappoint. But they did say the Lobster didn't have the expected flavor. Another friend that got the Arroz Marinero would rate it 4.5 out of 5, only because the Oysters where slightly overcooked. The teenager that got the Carne a la Tampiquena would rate is 1 out of 5 for that the chili was bland, tamale was more Masa than meat, and the corn tortilla was hard. The cost is reasonable for a semi-upscale seafood restaurant. I personally would not be back. For desert they offered a brownie dish but then told us they had no brownies.

This is the best mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at! The food is authentic Mexican. The staff is very attentive and helpful! 4 of us went to eat and 2 were vegetarians. They made a special meal for them and it was not your run of the mill throw it together dish.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
