This review is purely on the food... we actually ate here because Basil Leaf had closed for personal reasons that night. Chips - Too good. Obviously since I ate way too many! Green Chile - Good! They bring out warm green chile sauce for the salsa. I like it. Red Chile - OK, I guess. Had the red chile on my meal and wasn't a big fan. I am typically a red over green person, but not here! Enchilada - Meh. I would pass on the enchilada next time. Enchiladas are my favorite Mexican dish and I almost always get them, but this one was not for me. Tamale - Good! I liked the pork in the tamale, it had a good flavor. Taco - Good! The seasoning on the taco meat was delicious. Sopapillas - best that I have had in Albuquerque. Just the right combo of fluffy, bready, crispy, and airy. Even better if they served them with some fresh local honey! YUM. All in all a good experience, though I'm not sure I'll go back too often.

Wow, exactly what I was looking for. I had the tamale with rice and beans green chile sauce. Sopapilla machine was broken, bummer, but the rest was bomb. The green chile sauce was perfectly spicy, the food came out hot the service was amazing. Our beverages were never empty, chips were always full and salsa was always warm( a new thing for me). Atmosphere is great, place was busy, so folks must like it. There was a wait as we were leaving, so don't go if you're in a hurry. But if your not in a hurry. GO enjoy, and repeat.

I got the chili relleno here yesterday. The green chili was amazing and the relleno has a nice crunch because of the batter. Our server was friendly and attentive. I will be back!

Best chile rellenos in town. Get a combo of a relleno with green and a blue corn enchilada with red and you've got all your bases covered. They also have a surprisingly large selection of vegan options. Only downside is their somewhat restrictive hours of operation.

Pretty good service food and friendly waiters. Fast service. The waiter check on periodically. Will be coming here more often.

It's good, but is it really good enough to justify the drive, the parking, the long wait for one of many empty tables? Unsure. The service, once you get a table, is flawless. (overlooking the Pepsi factor) I will go back next time I'm taking my Toyota for service, unless I'm feeling the call of epic pho at Basil Leaf next door.

I go here for the shredded beef burrito which sadly is only served Wednesdays and if you don't go early they usually run out. It's really delicious. I love both their red and green Chile so I usually get Christmas, the green is hotter though. Also I have to stop myself from eating all the chips and sauce they bring before the meal or I will be too full. They serve a warm green Chile sauce with the chips which is soooo good. I dont like that they don't serve chicken here, they substitute turkey instead which doesn't have the same taste so I usually only get beef or bean plates. All in all a great place for lunch or dinner as its close to my work.

Great food, the chile relleno was excellent! The staff were all exceptionally friendly, definitely a family type atmosphere. If you like mexican food you will love this place!!!!

Very popular with the folks at work, I'm not quite as in love with it. The food is good, but it generally comes COVERED with cheese. I have to order it "E-Z cheese" every time, or it feels like I'm just pumping cheese into my veins. Service is always good.

I hate Mexican food. &, I am not a fan of New Mexican food. So when I am stuck in NM for a week, things are generally not pleasant for me on the food scale. I also have a particular diet- low fat, vegetarian, low carb, minimal dairy, etc. That prefaced, this place was the best I've been to on my several trips over here. I really like how this place has separate menu offerings for gluten-free, vegetarian, & even vegan options!!! They also are happy to customize dishes as you like them. Between the 4 of us we must have had 10 plates because we wanted green chile on this combo item, & red chile on that combo item, etc. The chiles were good, & I ordered veggie tamales, which were nice because they were vegan, & avocado chile relleno, which was stuffed with avocado instead of cheese. You can also order it "naked" which means it is not deep fried in batter! Such a miracle to find New Mexican food that is not sopping in meat, oil, or cheese! Their rice & beans are also lard-free & vegan. However, they did mess up on one part & put cheese as a topping over the chile on my dish. Since I am not strict vegan, I just pushed it aside, but if you are- make sure to specify NO cheese- anywhere! I am also not a big carb eater, but their homemade chips & were warm & good, & actually enjoyed my first sopapilla. It was soft on the inside, light crisp on the outside, and actually had a pleasant taste. Reminded me of pizza crust. I would definitely come here if you want authentic tasting NM food with special dietary options!

Lots of vegan and GF options!! Close to I-40 if you're passing thru. Vegan green and red chile sauces. I'm so happy we found this place on our drive across the country. I was really hoping to try some authentic New Mexican cuisine, but pork kept getting in my way. Enter La Salita! With an expansive menu that included many clearly marked vegan options, I had found my answer! Everything was very tasty and our server was great. She waited til we were finished with our meals to bring out the freshly made, piping hot sopapillas (complimentary with most every meal)! Hot damn, those were delicious. Located a little over a mile off I-40 if you're traveling and looking for something more exciting than a bean burrito (no cheese) or fries for sure! Definitely worth the detour.

La Salita...good New Mexican food and amazing warm salsa and chips! We usually stick with the combo specials. My favorite is #1 with a chile rellano, a cheese enchilada beans and rice. My husband usually gets the #2 with a cheese enchilada, a pork tamale and a ground beef taco. Every now and then, I live on the wild side by ordering the Tuesday/Thursday B.O.G. Specialty Burrito with green chile pork and Swiss cheese. I'm not sure what B.O.G. stands for, but it's a delicious dish and available as a half or a full portion. The servers are ALWAYS friendly and efficient. I love the sopapillas, too. I appreciate the reminder that they can be served with the meal or as dessert. And the lady who greets folks and works the cash register is hilarious....I don't agree with a fellow Yelper who thought she was rude. La Salita is definitely a favorite spot for locals who like good food, excellent service and fair prices.

I ate there last night with our son. I liked it, the place was packed. The waitress was pleasant looking and behaving. I ate a pork taco with red chili. I didn't know about asking for E-Z cheese which at least one reviewer here on Yelp has mentioned in connection with this restaurant. That would be important. The meal I had last night had way way way too much cheese. My son liked his food. It was raining outside. The red chili was not particularly good but it was not bad.

Service / Wait - We arrived at 6:20 PM on Friday, January 3. There were enough people waiting in the 5x8 ft front lobby / hallway to fill it. Door to restroom area opens out into this lobby, and there was a regular stream of people squirming through to use those restrooms. We saw and heard a customer arguing with the hostess to get her to move him up the waiting list. We also spoke with an out-of-town visitor who was back for another meal for the second night in a row. Our total wait was about 25 minutes, after three large parties were seated. Food service was acceptable for a busy kitchen - beer & wine drink arrived and our order was taken within fifteen minutes. Food - The salsa and the sauces on both our entrees (half burrito-chile relleno-taco combination and Naked Rellenos) tasted nearly identical - high-heat chile flavor, with very little complexity or difference between green or Christmas. On burrito, Naked Relleno and chile relleno, cheese was more a sauce than melted cheese, with a very stringy texture and no flavor. Shredded turkey in both entrees was acceptably cooked. Sopapillas were good. Overall impression - The floor was littered with scattered fragments of corn chips, and a child dining at the table behind us threw an empty chip bowl on the floor. Restaurant staff walked past chip fragments without apparent concern, and no one came to sweep the floor. Both of us had digestive problems afterwards - GI upset / heartburn. We are familiar with New Mexican and Mexican cuisine, so this was surprising. We couldn't figure out why the restaurant was so packed with customers for mediocre, one-flavor food. ** Should you eat here? You decide. The price is good for family dining, if you know what to expect. We much prefer Mariscos Altamar or the Pueblo Harvest Café, for the variety and complexity of flavors in both and authenticity in Mariscos. Less than five minute wait for a table at either, too.

Wow, great find off of the I-40! We completely enjoyed our dinner and really enjoyed their table salsa (heated too!) enough that we bough jars to take home too! Great flavors, portions and variety. I loved the Carne Adovada burrito.

  • Portia H.

I got (2) blue corn tacos. There was an up charge of $1.89 for the blue corn. The lettuce and tomatoes were of to the side of the taco? The meat tasted like Alpo canned dog food. This is definitely how i do not like to dine. I won't be back!!! The so papilla and honey was delicious! Parking is virtually nonsexistant.

Makes this pregnant lady happy! The ultimate Mexican comfort food for a good value. Love the warm salsa too. Wish they had longer hours and open more often because I crave it!

Excellent New Mexican food. I had the Carne Adovada Christmas and my colleague had Chilles Rellenos one stuffed with Artichokes and the other with Swiss cheese. Great food, very friendly server. The wait on Friday evening was long, but the food was great! I have another favorite in ABQ.

Great food and service. Local family run restaurant and it shows. I have several of jars in my fridge of their green chile sauce.

  • Jazmine V.

La Salita! You must be after my own heart! Why is it that I gave you five stars? Was it the warm chile sauce/salsa that greeted me upon arriving to my table or was it the perfectly seasoned ground beef covered in delicious red chile? Maybe it was the hot, fresh buttered tortilla that accompanied my meal. Actually, it was probably the melt-in-my mouth sopapilla, the best sopa I've ever had. The service was quick and attentive..and my meal came to the table super fast. The menu is fabulous. It includes something I look for: healthy options. There was an option of getting naked chile rellenos stuffed with turkey and cheese. I really like the idea that this restaurant serves healthful food, too. Simple flavors combined wondefully well. New Mexican food at its finest. Period.

This is my favorite spot for New Mexican food. Everything I have ordered has been great. They are wonderful for gluten free options and they even made my son a squirrel shaped sopapilla and offered a kids plate for free. The only slight knock I have against this place is that they don't accept American Express.

  • Randy V.

Aaaawsum food. Went with my family (6 people) and everyone ordered something different and all expressed that the food was excellent. This is great authentic New Mexican food. The rellanos were especially good. I will be visiting this restaurant every time I am in Albuquerque.

  • Cruz K.

Maybe they got hotter chile? But the salsa and my green chile had great heat..My lite plate of beef enchiladas with green chile came out hot and the sopaipillas were fresh .I came right at lunch rush and had to wait like 10 mins but that was ok..The lady at the front desk was nice and said thanks for your patience and it was all good and there food made up for the wait..

We tried out La Salita tonight based on reviews we read on Yelp and other sites. The positive things about our experience was the service (prompt, friendly and professional), the beans, tortillas and sopapillas. The disappointing things were the salsa that was served with the chips and the green chile sauce are are not fresh (they are from a jar sold by La Salita), the chile rellenos are smallish and have a crisp batter and the rice is tasteless.

This place was certainly interesting. First I found it curious that there wasn't a Hispanic diner in here and I wasn't sure if that was due to the location or to the food. Well, I can say with confidence that the food here is on par with any of the other good New Mexican restaurants scattered around the city, from Cecilia's to Cervantes. The chips and salsa we received were delicious and I liked the fact that the salsa had been warmed---not the most common way of serving this app, but I generally approve. The salsa had a slight bite but was mild enough for my spice-despising wife to enjoy. Then came the food, rather quickly actually, and we were pleased with the presentation (if not slightly perturbed at the quick arrival, but hey). I ordered the Combo #3, a taco and stuffed sopaipilla with both red and green, and plowed right in, thinking foolishly that I could eat everything in my then hungry state. Really, I should have just gone a la carte and gotten the sopa, because I never touched the taco. Moreover, it was that boring New Mexican (see American-inspired) style taco with the hard shell straight from a package, which to me is almost as shameful as our use of fritos in a common dish. Anyways, the stuffed sopaipilla really was quite outstanding. The ground beef was well-seasoned, something that plenty of restaurants overlook in their reliance on chile to provide flavor. Here, the chile was flavorful but very tame, which was somewhat of a disappointment but certainly didn't affect the overall flavor. Plus, it allowed my wife to enjoy her food, so good job, La Salita. Overall, the place has a fan in me for it's solid food, healthy portions, and the fair prices, with our whole lunch clocking in at under $20 with tip. That reminds me, I have two sopaipillas at home waiting to be eaten since there was so much food on my plate yesterday. It's a good day.

This is the best New Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque as far as I'm concerned, just edging out Los Cuates. Everything is top notch, and the rellenos are the best in town by far!

This is one of my two favorite restaurants in Albuquerque. It is just amazing: the atmosphere, the food, the service. No wonder they keep busy every single day. Their chile is delicious (I'm not a big fan of spicy food) I love their stuffed sopapillas. They work around your needs and preferences. This is a place I'm proud to take my friends to dine out to.

Amazing authentic old school New Mexican! Stuffed Sopas or Turkey Tacos with Turkey/Rice soup are my favs! Turkey and green chile go so well together, it's amazing!!!

  • Paco R.

The worst example Mexican or New Mexican cuisine I experienced in NM. No idea why the locals think is good. Beware of Yelp reviews from people don't know about food.

    (1)
  • Caitlin O.

Staff is great, but the food seriously lacked flavor. Maybe I didn't catch them at their best time, but it was some of the most bland New Mexican food I've had outside of the usual tourist traps.

  • Meagan T.

We see why this place gets busy! Great, fresh food with a descent variety and sizes to split so a money saver too. Waitress recommended avocado chile relleño dinner which my partner and I split and had more than enough w one relleño each plus sides. The fry on this thing was spectacularly crispy and light (best I've had here). Delish beans and well seasoned papas (not just drowned in butter- although that's tasty too). Sopapillas a bit more doughy than I'm used to but still good; although the honey tasted strange. Wednesday night was busier than expected but no wait. Small parking lot w addl spots in back. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Growing up in Albuquerque and moving away for college and jobs, La Salita is my absolutely favorite restaurant still. It's the first place I stop at whenever I come home. The salsa is absolutely incredible and we keep a stock of it here in Dallas (thank you for selling that now). Service is fast, but get there early as there is often a long wait if you arrive around 6:30 PM. Personally I like the tacos, I know they're simple but so great. You can substitute papas instead of beans/rice which I would highly recommend.

  • Natacha D.

Best food I've had in Albuquerque this time around- I had the avocado stuffed chile relleno and it was fantastic- crunchy deep fried deliciousness on the outside and wonderful green chile avocado yumminess inside. Big portions- we both had the lite options and it was more than enough- and very cheap! Great ambiance too. Also- this place has lots of real veggie options! Not just loads of cheese instead of meat like a lot of places.

Headed treasure that the locals love. Great menu that will make anyone's mouth water. I had the Naked Rellenos and they were amazing. Don't forget the queso because it is a must try. They also sell there red and green chile sauce. I use it on my own mexican dishes at home. You can buy it at the restaurant or at Smith's.

I've been going to the Basil Leaf next door for a few years, and always wondered about this place, because it always seemed really busy. We took the opportunity last night to give it a try. We're very glad we did. My wife requires a gluten-free meal, and La Salita has a very respectable selection. I had the beef burrito with both red and green chili and it was really great. We'll definitely be back!

IF YOU'RE VISITING ABQ, GO HERE. This is the epitome of awesome authentic traditional New Mexican food. Believe me. I have lived in Albuquerque for 20 years. This is THE BEST. And if you've been here long enough to realize, Albuquerque has some fabulous eateries. But no other New Mexican joint even touches this place. Get the Thursday special. Although everything is good. I promise, you'll be addicted.

My "go-to" restaurant every time I come back home for a visit! It's been a family favorite for years! Don't miss the chile rellano and sopapillas, the best in town!

  • Brad A.

Kind of like Basil Leaf next door, La Salita does some things very right and seems to have a big following, but at the same time seems to miss a bit on other things. My biggest complaint is the menu - it just isn't very deep compared to other New Mexican places. Seems like some of their best dishes are specials that are only available a handful of days of the week; but frankly if I have to ask "what day to they have adovada" I'm probably just going to go to Sadies or somewhere else. Possibly due to the fact they never quite have what I'm hungry for, I've never been super impressed by anything. Seems to be fairly standard fare for Albuquerque New Mexican; though perhaps a bit milder and bit heavier on the cheese than other places. They're very, very kid friendly though. Big points for that.

I had one night in Albuquerque before flying home and wanted to eat at the best Mexican restaurant here. I found it! This place is AWESOME. The food is excellent and the service is outstanding. Also a very friendly and casual atmosphere.

  • Clay G.

I found this place through Yelp, and agree with the others; this place serves very good New Mexican food. I had the blue corn beef enchiladas with green chile, and enjoyed every bite. What keeps me from giving a five star rating? Ground beef is used instead of shredded beef; No chicken enchiladas on the menu; and the green chile sauce could be a bit hotter. Overall a great place for lunch.

    (4)
  • Claudia A.

This place has great New Mexican food. Very tasty and fresh. However, the waiting times are awful. Normally you have to wait 20 minutes to get a table, even when it seems that there are tables available to sit immediately. And then you have to wait at least another 20 minutes to get your food. By the time you see a plate in front of you, you're starving and bored. No matter how good their food is, I don't have the patience to wait for that long for it. I can cook the same meal at home faster.

    (3)
  • Nick S.

They start you off with chips and salsa the salsa us fresh green and homemade Carne adovada. A burrito with slow cooked pork cushion with their signature red chile blend, wrapped in a flour tortilla and topped with cheddar cheese. I had it topped with both green and red chili. I liked the red more than the green, but both were quite good. It was a great meal with great service at a reasonable price. They also include sopapillas, which was a nice finishing touch. Also the prices were quite affordable.

  • Jeffrey L.

I am a regular at La Salita. I usually go there on Wednesdays for lunch to have their 'Shredded Beef Burrito". I think it is the best thing on the menu although their chile rellenos and enchilada plate are also very good. Their queso is good but the best thing are their sopapillas. They are freshly made and melt in your mouth. The service is always good and the owners now know me by name. My only complaint and it is a minor one is that the decor is not quite worth a 5-star rating. I think they should add more "new mexican" theme to the restaurant and get rid of the amateur pictures/paintings. I would like to have given them a 4 1/2 stars but that isn't possible. One other item of note, they have a child's finger-food plate that used to be (and possibly still is) complimentary. It is probably made for kids under 5 and is one of the things that adds to their customer service. One of the best in ABQ for New Mexican food.

I have been eating at La Salita since the early 80's. ONe of the very best Green Chile sauces I have ever tasted. They fairly recently added something called the bach burrito it is carne adovada (green) with swiss cheese. what a wonderful flavor combination. Seriously though I have not eaten anything there that I didn't love.

    (5)
  • Nathan B.

Outstanding -- I highly recommend the avocado "naked relleno" with swiss.

  • Margaret M.

Two words. No way. Baffled by all the rave reviews. Aside from decent price and our waiter (without whom this would be a 1 star rating), the food was greasy, covered in cheese - my arteries hardened while chewing the papas. The red/green chili weak! Shredded beef okay, but not as good as Ortega's. The hostess/cashier did not even acknowledge us when we walked in - we had to ask if we were supposed to seat ourselves, it was only later that I realized the veteran diners know the drill - you have to declare yourself, or be prepared to be ignored. The chick that seated us got drinks wrong then set them on the table with unnecessary force. And as I said, the food wasn't worth it. No mas. Ever. Again.

First time here. Have seen it time and time again so the wife and I decided to finally stop in. Was very surprised at how busy the place was for the size which was a good sign from the start. The chips and salsa were good, with the salsa being warmed which you don't see too often. It had good flavor and just the right amount of bite. I ordered the Combo 3 which is a stuffed sopapilla with ground beef and beans along with a taco. I loved my stuffed sopa! I asked for Xmas on the chile, but should have stayed green all the way. The green had more flavor and a little more bite. The taco was not a fave at all. Standard store bought taco shell along with more of a "paste" of ground beef which I think had entirely too much potato. That's the best way for me to describe the consistency. The wife loved her chile relleno as it arrived crispy the way she likes it and not drowning and soggy. The service was excellent, and the prices are not bad at all. Me and the wife always like to rate places after our meal on a 1-10 scale. We both gave it a 7. Would we go back? Yes. Would we order a taco? No.

  • Matt D.

When I'm in Albuquerque for business, my hosts almost always take us to lunch at least one day at La Salita. I haven't had anything I haven't liked here. The Chile Rellenos are fantastic. Almost all of the meals are really too much to eat for lunch, and you get sopapillas and honey at the end. If you have someone to split a meal with do it, otherwise you'll be getting a box to go.

  • Jennifer I.

This place is really delicious! The service was great and it was definitely packed with people in there. I ordered the Carne Adovada Burrito, which they only serve on Fridays and Saturdays. It was delicious, very spicy, and the sopapillas were also great. The only thing that really worried me, and perhaps took the 5th star, is that the food came out VERY fast, which makes me have to question the freshness. Either way, the food was delicious and I would definitely return here again.

  • Nick R.

This friendly little family owned restaurant is a real gem. We had the best Mexican dinner of our lives there. Terry admits she's a bit of a snob when it comes to Mexican food, living in Arizona most of her adult life, and she said her chile relleno was the best she has ever had. I had the pork (carne) adovada burrito smothered in cheese. Delicious!

  • Malcolm A.

This restaurant is the epitome of New Mexican food. My favorite dish is the Turkey Stuffed Sopaipilla. Where else will you find Turkey as a protein choice? La Salita is generous on the cheese, the chile, and the flavor. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. They also offer their sauces and salsa to go..

    (5)
  • Nat L.

The salsa that comes with the chips is great! The sopapillas are mind-blowing! The entrees are...meh. It's actually a confusing dining experience. It starts out SO strong! The salsa is really good. Then the entree arrives and it's just OK. Then the bring out the sopapillas and it's back to awesome-land. I'll be going back though. If there is stuff on the menu that is better/more representative I want to know. If I can get this into a trifecta of tastiness in my mouth I'll be a regular here in a heartbeat.

Excellent. Try the chili rellenos. Great service and even better food! Highly recommend

I give this place 5 stars because they produced the best New Mexican meal of my time in ABQ. I had the blue corn beef enchiladas, red and green chile (don't hate, they are both good). The chips and salsa that they give you are good, the refried beans and rice are good, and the sopapilla, the best I've had. I've been there twice and both times nearly ruptured my stomach trying to fit the sopapilla in. I should add that the posole is good there, too, if you happen to be around when they are making it (holidays?). The bizcochito? Meh, you can probably do better yourself (and avoid the lard).

    (5)
  • Richard G.

There are two other New Mexican restaurants that get all the buzz in ABQ, but I think La Salita is on it's way to being a ABQ TOP 5! I LOVE their shredded beef burritos and the warm green chile salsa with the chips on the table! They made big points with my kids by bringing them mini sopapillas in Christmas shapes sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar!

Oh man. We went for lunch today (Wednesday Special, of course) and waited a whopping 50 minutes to be seated. Yes, for lunch. I've never seen the place so packed! You could tell they were moving people as fast as they could. Once we were seated, everything was perfect. Our orders were taken quickly and our food was out ridiculously fast. It seems my whole family is now on first name basis with the waitstaff and our waitress had their order memorized. Holy cow, the green chile was HOT today! We were all sweating with dripping noses. That's when you know it's good. ;) They are were also advertising that they are now open for private parties on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Jane B.

In the land of a thousand Mexican restaurants, this is pretty much the only place we eat. Consistently excellent food, great portions, and for my husband, the vegetarian entrees and salsas are really "clean." The shredded beef (on Wednesdays and Saturdays) is outstanding, and it's nice to have a place that serves turkey. I love their chili con queso and their sopaipillas are excellent (stuffed or plain). We've been coming here since we moved to this part of town in 1995. They have a loyal following so a bit of a wait is possible. Yum!

  • Teresa R.

If you want good green chili this is the place to go. Best New Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque by far...

    (5)
  • Matthew W.

The salsa for the chips is almost like green chile, served warm, and it is very good. I felt the red and green chile were just average, and the chile relleno was good, but not spectacular. Sopapilla's were just average, and they only give you one. I'm being a little harsh on them, given their 4.5 star rating, thus the 4 stars. They get really busy at lunchtime (and dinner too I think), so come early.

    (4)

What a find! Was passing through on vacation & stopped for dinner. They have a "lite bite" menu and are flexible to let you split entrees with no hassle. The food was great (green sauce has a kick). Friendly waitstaff, good service. Will eat here again!

Went on a Wednesday, I had the special of the day and my wife chose a selection off the light menu section. Our wait to be seated was minimal as there was two couples ahead of us. The wait staff was friendly, took our drink and food orders promptly. The complementary salsa was delicious. The drinks are sized right. As for the food, it was excellent. Our order was delivered fast. My shredded beef burrito was great, but the chile relleno my wife ordered was excellent. I would recommend this place.

Great food and good service. I enjoyed the Burrito Eduardo (turkey and sour cream) and my wife had the seasoned beef tacos. My wife said the sopapillas were the best she ever had. Would definitely go back for more!

This is some of the best New Mexican that I have had since I have been here. I went once for a work lunch and enjoyed the food. I can't remember exactly what I had but I plan to go back soon.

We've eaten at La Salita more times than I can count over the years. The standards are consistently high for ingredients, taste, service. The place is crowded on Friday and Saturday nights (the restaurant is closed Sunday), so there may be a line. The queso is fantastic! My personal favorite entree is the blue corn enchiladas. If I have any complaint, it's that they don't serve chicken, and I don't like turkey.

We went for dinner. Since it was Tuesday, the special was the BOG which is a shredded pork burrito covered in cheese and green or red sauce. My BOG and soda was $11.22, which also included complimentary chips, salsa and sopapillas for dessert. Another recommended entree is the chili rellenos, which are made fresh to order, not made up in advance and frozen. This place is a little small, so you may have to wait to get in, but is worth the wait.

This is a great place for a no-nonsense New Mexican lunch. The place is family owned and is housed in a small--and a little bit dingy--setting, but the food is good, fast, and reasonably priced. If you're in the mood for New Mexican, check it out. I don't think it's open for dinner, so you'll have to head over before 2:00 in the afternoon.

I had the best restaurant experience tonight that I came really close to crying. So I feel I just HAVE to share with you all. Under A friend's recommendation we went to La Salita restaurant with our 18 month old. Restaurants recently have been ROUGH. He just wants to throw everything, screams about everything, and goes into a meltdown, even though we pack a bag of toys and games. But I've been so busy with being a teacher and work for both of us that eating out recently has become a necessity. For one, they have a finger foods plate that is FREE for kids under 6. A good size for toddlers, too. Then, they brought out his food early. And then within seconds of my son crying/screaming and I went to go pick him up and the manager came over and started chatting with him and pulls out 4 hot wheels cars for him to play with right when our food gets there. They placed foods out of reach of baby and were totally focused on him the whole time, which was amazing. She starts playing the cars with him and tells us, "you got at least 5 minutes now! Be sure to eat!" While she leaves and he is SO HAPPY with these little toys. I seriously wanted to cry in happiness with how awesome that was for us. He threw a car and the manager came over and showed him how not to throw a car, where he could play the cars, showed how to create a little barrier, etc. just totally did an awesome job at distracting him and showing him how to play with them while we ate. She even would run up and pick up any toys he dropped. Sopapillas came and they even gave him a mini dinosaur shaped sopapilla. They noticed when he was starting to hit his wall and quickly got us everything we needed to help get out quickly. As we left, the manager chatted with me about how hard it is at that age, and gave me a helpful hint of getting the miniature containers of play dough and saving them for only when out at restaurants and only when our food comes. They were amazing, and I totally felt catered to there. FREE plate for my kid, extra cute small sopapilla for him, and actively working just as hard as us to keep him happy and entertained. I loved it. Our bill was only $30 after taxes for an appetizer, a drink, and two entrees (plus our free toddler meal) and I left an $8 tip. It was awesome! Oh, and food was delicious. Seriously amazing.

Sometimes I struggle to differentiate New Mexican places. They all serve similar things and often have a similar take on the menu items. However, I saw some items at La Salita that were quite intriguing. I ordered naked chiles rellenos, essentially stuffed peppers but not fried, and was very happy with my choice. Their other menu options looked interesting including the option for smaller half-potions. The sopapillas were a bit doughier than what I am used to. I guess some of that comes down to personal preference

We tried La Salita based on the awesome Yelp reviews. The place is seriously hoppin! The hours are really restrictive, and the waiting line goes out the door. This place is filled with friendly regulars and we had multiple conversations about what's good during our 40 minute wait. When we were seated it took a long time for our server to take any orders. However water, green chili, and chips were dropped off as soon as we were seated. I think this place is just super busy so service is a bit slow. We waited for 45 minutes for our order once it was placed. Our server kept us stocked in chips and chili and our water glasses full. He was friendly and repeatedly apologized for the wait. The food came and all around was delicious. Everything we ordered was tasty, hot, and freshly cooked. We have no complaints on the food. The style is tex-mex food, with of course the New Mexican Green Chili highlighted beautifully. We all had our meals smothered in green and had the chili relleno. La Salita boasts the best chili relleno in New Mexico so of course we had to order it. Honestly, it really was spectacular. Crispy shell, creamy (cheese or avocado) filling, and of course a mild poblano chili as the vehicle. The green chili is served on the bottom so there is no soggy texture. The chili starts out at a medium heat but grows and grows until you're sweating. We all thought it was the best chili we've tasted in ABQ. We all want to go back to La Salita, and are going to try to be there right as the door opens to hopefully get in and out a little faster. When we left around 8 (closing time) there were still people waiting to be seated. The regulars seem to be treated exceptionally well by the staff and you can tell families have been eating here for years. I hope to become a regular as well!

Abq, Local, N.M. Shop and Staff This location is the only one in Albuquerque. It is a very cozy restaurant with a good amount of tables for lots of people, and little wait time. I will admit the floor inside needs to be updated. Hard wood flooring or just new carpet. The staff are very nice, and they are accommodating. There used to be a West side location, but due to bad location it closed after a few years. Food and Experience Lets talk about the chips and salsa for just a minute. The chips are made in house and so is the salsa. The love they put into making this is apparent in every chip. I crave them all the time. Untill you have had the chips and salsa from this restaurant you dont know what you are missing out on. The food my girlfriend, and I got filled every spot we needed to be filled. It was her first time, and she had no complaints. The food came out hot, and fast. I got the chile rellenos, and beef tacos. My girlfriend got the chile rellenos, and beef burrito. The service was spot on, and I love taking people from out of town to this hot spot.

O.M.G. Soooooo good! The place was packed and for good reason! We both got the create your own combo. My absolute favorite was the Avocado Stuffed Chili Relleno! If I could go on and on about it, I would! That was the BEST CHILI RELLENO I'VE EVER HAD! The salsa that comes with your chips and salsa as you arrive is spicy and flavorful! Please note, they bring it pretty darn temperature warm, on purpose, to your table....not cold salsa! Very surprising and very good! If I could ship their salsa, green chili and their avocado chili rellenos to us, I would! Our server, Mark, was GREAT!

Ok, nothing special. Don't recommend it. I read the reviews and got excited. I have been there twice now. It's ok. The food is nothing special. Nothing hot/spicy. It caters to non-chile eaters. Chile is supposed to have a bite, be spicy. At least mild but nothing. The first time the server took forever to take our order and then to bring it. It was a group of 6. I went a second time with a friend. Party of 2. Same thing, slow service. Below average food. No good chile. Haven't been back. Won't be back.

When you come to Albuquerque, you owe it to yourself to get some Mexican food, and La Salita delivers. Not a huge place but not too small, it provides good food at reasonable prices. The chips and salsa are good, the tacos, beans, rice, and tamales are outstanding. I can only suggest that you try something from the large menu. The red chile sauce was not overly spicy and complemented the meal. So what can I add to the other reviews? Just this: a lot of meals come with a sopapilla, which you may wonder about. It is a roughly 3" x 3" square of fried dough that you can order with meat or other fillings. With many meals, it comes on the side with nothing in it. You can have them brought at the end the meal, hot on a plate and ready to serve as dessert. The tables has bottles of honey that you can pour on your plate for dipping the sopapilla in. That makes for a very sweet ending to the meal. I could probably eat three or four of them for a meal, but they do make a good ending.

Amazing food! We moved here from CA and couldn't find a decent New Mexican food place we enjoyed and this place surpassed all expectations! The food is fresh and the salsas are AMAZING! I had the green chile stew and I would come back and steal a whole pot of it and just eat it for days! Yum! Plus my 1.5 year old's meal was free (who doesn't love that) under 6 free with the finger meal (rice beans tortilla and cheese yum) The servers were sweet and friendly plus VERY ACCOMMODATING! Basically - we love it and we will come back over and over again!

This place has amazing chili, both red and green. They both have some heat to em, depending on your taste buds. The service has been excellent both times I have been here. And their lunch specials during the week are perfect for a short, quick and simple lunch. This place fills up fast during the lunch hour , so get here early to avoid any waits.

I ordered the special which was a slow cooked pork in green chile burrito, topped with swiss cheese. It was a very small portion for almost $10 so that was disappointing; the cheese was the "Kraft" slice kind - you could see the lines from the wrapping on each; the chile had no real heat. This place was really busy - so I am happy for them - but I will not head back.

My husband and I had a problem of going out and eating Mexican food. Usually, the portion sizes were too big for our diet. One day we decided to try a new restaurant and went to La Salita. When we first walked into La Salita we were greeted and served warm salsa and chips. They have a lite menu, that fits into our living style. I order the lite chile relleno plate. And he order the lite blue corn enchilada plate. Both were delicious. They had excellent salsa, red chile, and sopapillas. It has a great atmosphere and attentive staff. The best part though, is now we have found the solution to our problem. Hooray!!!!

So- had to put these guys to the test and must say I am seriously pleasantly surprised. ordered the green Chile and red Chile as well as the Relleno plate. Was blown away that when asked about what's good for my 2 yr old they said the Finger Plater....... it was beans rice and sliced up tortilla - and it was complimentary.!!!!!!!! The green Chile was very flavorful- Chile was spicy but not overpowering. The consistency itself was not as thick as I like, however that wad not a serious issue. As for down right home home style flavor and that desired warmth right into your bones- perdection. The red Chile was as well very wholesome. My mind was blown with how well the Relleno held up in the transport container from the store to my house. With the increased moisture it was expected to be soggy. However- it was still crunchy. My only complaint for it was it tasted like it was a different batch of green chile's used than the stew- the flavor was not there and I struggled to find it between the batter and cheese. The batter was very nice though- seasoned well and held together nicely without being too thick. My wife was blown away with the level of attention given by the owners to her while she waited for the order- she said they explained their humble beginnings and how they make the majority of things fresh and in house. I could tell this to be true by the refried beans served with the Relleno plate. The flavor was of regular cooked beans and the consistency did not have that "creamy" blended tecture. It was more a taste of hand smashed and ground down beans- very nice, very impressive. I would say easily- forget those other big name places- La Salita holds down the saying- the small hole in the wall, family owned places are ALWAYS the best.

Delicious! I would definitely eat here if I were you. It is New Mexican food...not Mexican food so there are different options (and some of the same) from your traditional Mexican fare. I did the "build your own" option where you get to choose 3, 4 or 5 of: enchiladas, taco, chile rellenos, tamales, half burritos, or stuffed sopapillas. I had an 'avocado relleno' which was stuffed and topped with avocado slices. The batter they fry the rellenos in is fantastic! Light, thick, crunchy and flavorful. Get one of these. I also got a tamale and was pleased to find more filling than most tamales.

My favorite New Mexican restaurant! Every time I come home I HAVE to come here and get the Grand Tomas. They have the best chili rellenos.

This place was ok, I liked the food but was impressed by nothing. The service was very good and very patient with a big family and small children. The food was really overpriced. I was shocked by the bill. I made everyone try the chile relleno for which they are famous and no one liked it. I think we are just an anti-chile relleno family. I like the tamales and burritos, but even those were pretty commonplace.

Was pretty good. Would prefer hatch chilie but was good. Red much better then green. Green they seem to make a sauce that has lots of other non green in it. Service was quick we went at 6 so really busy but in in 25 min

I came here on Wednesday with co-workers for lunch and this was just the New Mexican food I was looking for. The restaurant is kind of small and we waited about 10 minutes for a table, which wasn't too bad, but the waiting area is pretty cramped. Once we sat down, our server immediately took our drink orders and I started to go through the menu. One of my co-workers said that the beef burrito is awesome and they have it on Wednesdays, so I should get it. I am always looking for a personal recommendation, so I went with that. I couldn't decide on red or green chile, so I got both on the side. When my meal came, it looked amazing and I tried out both chiles. The red was a little milder, so I used all of that and only a little green. The burrito was awesome. The beef was super tender and full of flavor. The best part of the meal is when they brought out the sopapillas for dessert....I put a little honey on it and it was like heaven. I'll definitely be coming back here when I'm back in Albuquerque.

Food is out of this world great! Service tonight was slow. We waited 15 minutes after being seated for our waitress to get our drink order and then another 15 - 20 minutes for her to take our food order. Our table was the one closest to the door. I had people staring at every bite I took because one of the benches for people to wait to be seated is located IN the dining room. Very disconcerting! The entire meal was delicious. The ambiance like a cafeteria in a crowded high school lunch room.

Hooool-y smokes this place is good! I've lived in New Mexico my entire life and been to many, many (manymany) Mexican restaurants here. This may be the new #1 (or tied for 1st with El Patron) because of their nice staff, incredible green chili sauce, and overall deliciousness of the food. They have vegetarian options and the plates that come out look like they've been put together with careful planning and you really have to be careful not to eat too much! We had the enchiladas, full burrito plate, and half burrito plate and we were all super impressed with the quality and tastiness of the food. We were actually out to lunch with our world-traveling Colombian friend, and even he agreed it was outstanding. I can't wait to return again and again, especially to try some of their margaritas... Thanks La Salita!

We loved our experience at La Salita, I'm so surprised at how few reviews there are! Either people who dine here don't write reviews, or this is a hidden gem in Albuquerque. My gf, family, and I were in search of some good Mexican food on the weekend after Christmas. We heard great things about La Salita online and once we saw all the vegan options (my gf is vegetarian) we headed straight over. We got there early, about 4pm, so there wasn't a wait at all. After we were seated we were quickly given what appeared to be typical salsa and chips. Not so!! THE SALSA IS DELICIOUS, AND IT ARRIVES TO THE TABLE WARM! I've never had warm salsa before, but La Salita really made this work. I felt in the mood for stew/chile so I ordered the Green Chile Stew and the Red Bowl of Chile. The green chile stew is probably the 2nd best I've ever had in my life (Dad's is still the best), but that's saying something!!! The green chile used is spicy, but still so delicious. I wish I had gotten two of these instead because the Bowl of Red Chile was not that great at all. Me being a red-chile lover, I was really hoping for something great here. Unfortunately I got a Bowl of [dull] Red Chile. Hardly any spice/kick to it at all. And they use ground beef, which adds grease to the chile giving it a weird consistency. I poked at this a little. Good thing I got the Green Chile Stew, otherwise I'd be leaving a whole different tone of review here. The sopaipillas and tortillas are the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD (I'm born and raised in NM, so I've had my fair share). These tasted freshly made, as in right before they brought them to the table. The sopaipillas were soft on the inside and flaky to perfection on the outside. I wish I had a whole basket of just those. I didn't add honey or anything, it was perfect as is. The tortillas were so warm and soft! I swear I got a buttery taste from them, which is interesting since it didn't look like there was butter on them. So tasty. They have a ton of vegan/vegetarian offerings. And they don't just do a cheese tamale, they actually offer a veggie filled tamale. The only hiccup of the night I saw was that they added cheese, TO A VEGAN DISH!! My gf ordered a vegan dish, so why would they add cheese?? I know traditionally cheese is apart of all the dishes, but they need to be more mindful if people are ordering off the vegan menu. Unless of course they used some vegan substitute for cheese that I don't know about, in which case I am completely wrong and I apologize. Service was friendly, and VERY FAST. Although, the place was empty so with a more full restaurant things will likely slow down. They jar their salsa and sell it!!!

Horrible absolute horrible. Arrived for lunch and was told 15 min wait. Then the server took and placed people that came in after us. When I approached her to tell her the error she said I was wrong. We left! Horrible serve! I would give zero stars if possible! You are terrible! What a freaking joke this place is.....

Tourist style chile here in terms of heat but not everyone likes stinger hot. La Salita has a loyal following in my opinion due to consistently prepared dishes, good service, and lots of melted cheese! Four stars means I will return again and possibly go often enough to get that Dukedom in the game side of the Yelp world I'm in. Like any restaurant I frequent there are a few favorites that keep me coming back. My number one choice is simply the Avocado Relleno & Whole Beans. If you are a Relleno freak like me I say try it. La Salita has a break in hours between lunch and dinner so be advised. The place is solid and although it doesn't have Mariachis I think its a good spot to take folks who want the flavor of New Mexico without the high Scoville Units.

On my search for the perfect beans I decided to try La Salita. The service was great, upbeat, happy, and readily willing to answer any of my questions. They were absolutely fantastic. The food, however, is lacking, at least in my book. It wasn't BAD, so don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the best freakin' new mexican food I had ever eaten in my life kind of food either. Nothing stuck out to me, nothing made my mouth feel like it was on fire, and nothing stuck out to me as the best thing I had ever eaten in my life. So, it's a solid New Mexican restaurant, but it is not some place I will go out of my way for.

I think waiting for the food took the longest amount of time. It was well worth the wait. I got the chili rellenos plate. The batter was incredible with the perfect amount of spice. The soups definitely have a lot of spice to them so be careful. Overall great food for the price.

Recently moved to New Mexico and tried La Salita with some coworkers. It was AMAZING. I am from AZ so I've had good Mexican food before, but this tops anything I've ever tried. I came on a Wednesday and had the daily special (Carne Adovada Burrito) and it was delicious. I am new to the whole red or green question, but I chose green and I was not disappointed. Right after the meal they serve a hot sopapilla, which is great with some honey and cinnamon sugar. I will definitely come back for more!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
