K & I Diner was featured on Man vs. Food. I went in to K & I Diner for breakfast on Saturday morning. K & I has a very casual feel to it and all of the staff was very friendly. I ordered the "Carne Adovada", and it was awesome! The "Carne Adovada" was two eggs, hash browns, alongside the carne adovada and a tortilla. The "Carne Adovada" had an amazing sauce and the meat was tender. This is one of the best breakfasts that you'll find. Great food, very reasonable prices, along with fast and friendly service gives K & I Diner five stars.

    B I G ..... R E A L L Y ...... B I G ..... BREAKFAST ! ! ! ! Home cooked, good breakfast, with SUPER SIZED portions and 1980's prices. Casual, blue-collar, roadhouse vibe with very GOOD coffee and friendly service. No one will EVER complain about leaving hungry!

Wow! Bert`s mess was huge. Sausage, bacon and ham chopped over fries smothered in cheese and green chile all covered with scrambled eggs. Too much food but couldn't stop eating it.

K & I is a bit out of my way but the food is usually pretty good. Not today, I ordered a full Travis and It was flavorless. The Chile wasn't even good enough to have come out of a can. The french fries must have been cooked the day before, they were dry and gross. Very disappointed.

Fresh off a 11-hour drive from LA, we decided to have breakfast at the famous Grandma's K & I diner, which was just featured at Man Vs Food. hey, we're not going to let it slip away, so we decided to get the Travis on a Silver Platter. we knew what we were going to expect, 4 of us finishing the whole platter. well, that's what we thought! when the friendly crew arrived with our food, all the people were looking at us like, "whoa, what is that!?!?" we're kind of surprised to see their faces since they were locals and they probably must have tried it once in their lives. but moving on, halfway to the burrito smudged with 3 lbs of fries, we started to get full. 3/4 of the way, we decided that we cannot go on. FOOD WON!!! 4 stars because of their friendly staff, fast service and their Travis Burrito! That was definitely an experience. I suggest you try it too for yourselves and find out where you stack amongst the people who have tried this. remember, we were 4 hungry asians with a big apetite and we still didnt finish it.

This out-of-the-way mom-and-pop diner is EXCELLENT! I was visiting my girlfriend in Albuquerque and actually used Yelp to find it, and boy am I glad I did. We went first for breakfast on a Saturday, were seated promptly and our server was very friendly. The coffee here is great, which is pretty important to me in a breakfast greasy spoon. I decided to try the "Smothered Breakfast Burrito" and it did not disappoint. Perfect consistency of the tortilla and the green chile was a great representation of the cuisine that brings people to northern NM. It was so good we went back the following day for Sunday brunch. This time I got the signature dish - the "Travis" - which was two massive burritos smothered in chili, cheese, and french fries. The prices are more than reasonable, and with the food quality and service being what it is, you absolutely cannot go wrong here.

They can get really busy and forget you need coffee sometimes, but the food is absolutely amazing. for less than $20 you can feed 3 people and have left-overs. The coffee is strong, the biscuits are fluffy and the gravy is creamy! The whole family loves going there. Although none of us have tried the Travis, we all have favorites - mine is the Grandmas Biscuits (2 giant biscuits, filled with: egg, choice of bacon or sausage and cheese, comes with a bowl of white gravy and hash browns). Great place to nurse a hang over or to hang out with friends.

i love little divey diners so I really wanted to like this place....but it was too hard for me to overlook the grit and grime...and the food wasn't good enough to warrant even trying. I feel bad...but at the same time I feel the need to warn others....

If you have 20 bucks and have to feed 2 families, go in, Order the Travis on a silver platter, and dig in. Solid fries, nothing too fancy, however. The burritos have a solid NM flavor (not Mexican, but New Mexican), which I admit is beginning to grow on me. I went in and ordered it for my family, and it fed us for 2 meals, And I can put down some serious amounts of grub. I haven't tried the other stuff on the menu, but from what I saw from people around me, HOLY CRAP!, this place is some seriously grubbin breakfast food. Will go back for a brunch date with just the wife.

I am in heaven with Red Chile. Had the Carne Adobada breakfast burrito. It was $6.00 and as big as a house. The red Chile was amazing. The K & I Diner take the "crappy" out of Albu-Crappy. Staff was very friendly.

Pay attention because this is only for those who are looking to have a Chicken Fried Steak. Everything else here seems to be exactly what others have described which is why I gave it a two. Otherwise I would have given it a one. The CFS is a frozen patty. My fault because I didn't ask as I usually do. I was swayed by all of the amazing plates coming out and never thought a place like this would stoop to using a Frozen Puck. If you are looking for that New Mexico breakfast though that can feed your team for $20 this is the place.

Outstanding, ate here twice in less than 24 hours. Lunch had the "wimp" travis, which is not wimpy for lunch. Great burrito hidden under a hill of the best fries I ever had. For breakfast had the huevous rancheros, it was so filling I wanted to go take a nap. The red and green sauce in combination with the eggs, beans and hash browns were phenomenal. Don't let the exterior change your mind, it is very clean inside and the staff is so friendly.

When I go to Albuquerque I expect spicy food. The green chile was super mild. They told me their red chile was hotter but it was about the same. I would not have thought much about it if I was in New Hampshire but I expect more out of Albuquerque. The Huevos Rancheros at Village Inn (chain restaurant) was much spicier. K & I had a Navajo taco. It was made out of a Sopapilla. Give me a break, a sopapilla! I've eaten many a Navajo Taco. None was ever made from a sopapilla. In fairness to K & I, the helping were generous and service was good.

It's a little hole in the wall but defiantly worth the visit. Good food, ok service. Sit in the front room if possible. The ac seems to work better.

Well, that was okay. I had the cheese enchiladas, xmas, and they were okay. My colleague's burger looked like something I would have regretted wasting my calories on, the burrito piled with french fries was excessive and pointless except as a novelty (Look! My burrito is covered with hundreds of french fries!), and looking around the table I was underwhelmed by just about everything I saw. We have too many choices. Only go here if you must to please a relative or something.

The perfect breakfast spot. Huevos rancheros? Biscuits and gravy? You got it! This is one of my fave breakfast places. No matter what I'm in the mood for, I can get it here (and lots of it). They have New Mexican favorites as well as traditional breakfast items like french toast and omelettes. Out of all the times we have been here, there was only one bad experience- and I was really disappointed with how management handled it. We went for lunch (perhaps our first mistake), and I ordered steak fingers and fries. My steak fingers didn't show up until everyone else was halfway done eating. It's cool- those things take a while to cook... Except not. My steak figers were not cooked. They were raw, doughy, and absolutely disgusting. I brought it to our waiter's attention, and he brought the manager over. She whisked my food away with no apology, and didn't even offer me sometthing else. The steak fingers weren't removed from our ticket either. So disappointed. Things happen, but mak it right people. All in all, I would still eat here... But I'm not about to try those steak fingers again!

I'll keep going back to this place for the amazing burritos and/or Travis but I have to say that I've noticed they got rid of their skinny, yummy fries and their portions have gotten smaller, but I guess that's the economy for you! Still a great spot that I recommend.

My husband's co-workers recommended this place for breakfast, so we gave it a try a few weeks back. I had to think about it for a bit because I was not sure if I like it or not. I have had much better breakfast food at a Denny's. It was not the worst, but it definitely did not live up to the hype. The appearance is old could use an update, but that is what some like about the place.

Stopped by to eat quick lunch, and had smothered breakfast burrito with carne adovada. It costed $8.50 ish including tax, with tip it was about $10. Looks like menu on yelp is outdated with old prices. I thought it would come with some stuffs considering cost but it was just one single burrito only. I have had way better burrito for cheaper price and more portion. I do not understand why people raved about this place. There were couple people who were having "travis" but I was not really impressed by it either..

The K & I is a little hole in a wall diner that has great food and large portion sizes. It became more popular when the show Man vs. Food filmed an episode here. They are most famous for their Travis.. It's a bean and meat burrito with green and red chili smothered in French fries. They have it in different sizes and a huge 7 lb burrito that is the challenge to eat within 1 hr. I've only ever had the quarter Travis and breakfast here, and it's always been delicious. Worth the drive to the South Valley.

Came here because I read other reviews that said it was good. As a fan of good NM food and chile, I was not impressed. I had the breakfast burrito plate smothered with red and green. Both chiles were thick and gravy-like, which was kind of nasty. The chiles were not hot at all. The inside of the burrito was not good either. It came with two eggs and hash browns. It was hard to tell the difference between the two and tasted like a pile of mushy potatoes. Overall, this place is a glorified greasy spoon at best. I will not be back.

The Carne Adovada and the funky diner atmosphere at The K & I make it worth the trip! I remember enjoying their famous French Fry smothered Travis burritos for lunch many years ago, but lately I've rediscovered this Albuquerque institution as a wonderful breakfast destination. It's close to the freeway and features good food, efficient service and reasonable prices. Both the red and green chile are yummy, but fairly tame.

Such good food! Try the Bert's Mess!! The service is always excellent here, and the diner lively but quiet enough to hear others. I really like meeting my mom here to visit with her.

K & I has very "rustic" truck stop diner feel in an industrial section not far from the airport. The Red Chili was simply excellent (as good as mine!) and the Green Chili was also good. But, it was the Carne Adovada that stole the show. It was one of THE best I ever tried! 5- stars and I would have licked the plate clean.... but after I saw the total filthy disaster in men's restroom room, I opted not. IMHO - don't use the men's restroom room here. Go before you arrive, and/or bring handi-wipes before eating. But in the end, the food was outstanding and there were no digestive "express check-out" issues. ;-)

I've been wanting to try this place for a very long time, but with my ridiculous work schedule I could never make it. Finally, I had a day off and before hitting up the rio grande my SO and I headed to this lovely diner for breakfast. We were promptly given menus and asked for our drink orders by a lovely and sweet waitress. Our drink orders were promptly delivered and our orders were taken. As we sat there reading the paper, drinking our coffee, and waiting on our food I felt ridiculously relaxed. The restaurant buzzed with people doing their own things, talking, enjoying each others company, and enjoying the large portions of food for a fair price. It's the perfect place to bring your family, friends, or SO for a great value and great bonding time. I got the chicken fried steak and eggs while my SO had the ham and eggs. It was promptly delivered and I was very pleased with the portions of the orders. You can get a tortilla, toast, or a biscuit on the side with a side of gravy only being $.50 extra. What a freaking steal. I went for the toast, because I was worried my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I couldn't eat my whole meal or all of my toast, so I'm super glad I didn't go for a side of biscuits and gravy. Either way, the meal was perfect. I'm excited to have another day off so I can roll out of bed, drink coffee out of christmas mugs, and enjoy some delicious food all for around or under $10 a person.

I have been a fan of the K&I for over 30 yrs, I hadn't been there for a while so this morning on my way to work I thought I would grab a Travis on the way. When I pulled into the parking lot I thought it was closed there weren't any cars in front like usual. When I walked in I noticed they had painted and done some other remodeling (different pictures up and such) but I really didn't think to much about it. I ordered the 1/4 Travis with red/green and a large drink to go. While I waited I looked around some more, looked at the menu and noticed the prices had gone up quite a bit but knowing what I would get for that money I was fine with it or so I thought. I received my to go order and the first thing I noticed was how light the bag was, hmm ok it's been a while, gotta get to work. Got to work opened the box and...... WTH is this? the fries looked like greasy little slivers of wood NOT the golden brown delicious fries I was used to getting, then I looked for the burrito HMM ok there it is, it was hidden under one of those greasy little slivers of wood. I thought maybe I was the victim of a new cook or because it was so early and they had just opened they weren't ready so I'll try it maybe it tastes better than it looks(WRONG) OMG the fries(YUCK) were TERRIBLE, the burrito forget it ! now I know why the bag was so light, this wasn't a 1/4 Travis, this was an emasculated miniature version of the ONCE great Travis and the Chile forget it I've had better out of a can. Now i'm really disappointed and wondering what the heck happened so I do some web searching and find out management has changed and so has the food and not for the better as I stated previously I've been eating at the K&I for over 30 yrs SAD to say I will not eat there again I loved the OLD K&I it's sad to see this great go-to place go down. If this is progress you can have it I don't want any part of it.

ABQ Tradition that I fully embraced! Looks sketchy but aren't those the places with the best food? All I have to say is get the Burts Mess... You wont be disappointed!

Stopped in with my wife this morning, got the Wimp Travis. Service was great, I ask for both red and green (also called Christmas) and we got red on the side. Besides being delicious it allowed me to add it as I chose and made for a really tasty brunch. I really tried but couldn't finish the Wimp. The atmosphere on this Sunday morning was family friendly, the whole experience was positive. I really like the large glass for water and ice tea. This is another local favorite when I vacation I often look for places like the K&I they really showcase local cuisine.

The decor and service in this place is spot on. The food was not very good, very large portions and inexpensive, not really memorable. Our server was a doll. She made me feel at home. I loved the colorful plastic flower in her hair. She made sure our coffee was filled up and that we were happy. The interior is a blast from the past. They have rusty cast iron on the wall against retro wallpaper, you could call it the wall of tetanus. It reminded me of some of the country eateries in VT, NH, and ME. I had a breakfast burrito, boyfriend has biscuits and gravy with sausage links and eggs. My burritos filling was luke warm and texturally slightly off-putting. The carne adovada was good, but the potatoes I wished were not so mushy. When combined with the eggs it was not ideal. I would eat here again, but would stick to more standard breakfast fare like the peppered bacon and eggs with toast. 5 stars for service, and atmosphere and 2 for food.

Hungover from one drink too many the night before, I randomly stumbled across K & I via my search for dive-y diner food. Intrigued by the fact that my friends and I had never heard of this place, my husband and I decided to give it a try. Plastered to the wall, there are photos of people taking on 'The Travis.' This gargantuan undertaking is not for the faint of heart. Think "Man Vs. Food" style here. After gazing upon the almighty Travis in it's french fry encrusted, green chile smothered glory, I decided "oh heeeellllll no." So I ordered a 1/4 of the Travis. The green chile was perfectly spicy and flavorful. The ground beef was juicy and flavorful (and not greasy!). The fries were cooked well enough that the green chile sauce didn't immediately turn them into mush. Everything on the menu is super-sized. Your hunger will definitely be curbed and you won't be disappointed by the food. Both the red and green chile are awesome! My only complaint would be that service can be slow at times because the layout of the restaurant is awkward. My advice? Order a large drink-- then you are guaranteed to not need a refill. Also, maybe try and sit in the front room to get more attentive service. I may have only managed to eat an 1/8 of the Travis, but I will definitely be back...maybe with 12 of my friends...maybe to try and take on The Travis.

The value proposition here is absolutely insane. Huge portions. Tasty food. Dirt cheap. I don't know how they do it.

We strive to find local places to eat on the weekend and found this gem. I only gave 4 stars since it took almost 30 minutes to get our food. The ambiance is just what you would expect from a diner...old farm items hanging from the wall and a casual feel. My husband had told me about "The Travis" some time ago so getting here and actually seeing it, all I can say is WOW! We didn't order it but a couple of tables did. If you do, good luck! This food item did make a showing on "Man v. Food." Our waiter was super sweet and attentive. Made sure our glasses were always full and took time to talk to my friend's granddaughter. I had the huevos rancheros, Christmas. I ordered corn tortillas but got flour. Oh well. No gluten allergies here so I just went with it. Chili was tasteful and eggs were perfectly cooked. My friend ordered carne adovada and biscuits and gravy. She said the carne adovada was good but I didn't try. Did try the biscuits and gravy. Yummy. Would recommend if you're looking for a new place to try. Enjoyable experience.

I have been wanting to try this place for years, finally my family and I went today for lunch. Our meal came out it wasn't anything great. I had the Que Linda and my husband had the Travis. He said my plate was much better than his. The table next to us found a "tooth" of some sort in her beans which totally grossed us out. The owner didn't seem to concerned that she found that in her food. Sadly, I will not be going back. Very disappointed.

Mmmmmm... Really good food (had the Travis burrito). The portions are huge, and the value is outstanding. The staff is friendly, and the food came out pretty fast. The restaurant is clean, and the atmosphere is decent. Overall, I like this place a lot and would highly recommend it.

This place looks like a total dump but the food is really good so don't let the looks of this place fool you. I tried the Travis which was awesome this place puts fries on everything which isn't bad. A few friends tried the roast beef, chicken fried steak, and Navajo taco and all of them liked it and would go back again.

K&I diner is far from "fine dining" but nobody is claiming it is! Let me say this up front, it is good food! To be honest though it is a bit of a dive. If you are a brave soul you can find it way down on South Broadway in ABQ, and trust me you can't miss it. Just look for what seems to resemble Santa's workshop with red and white candy cane looking stripes complete with the distinct scent of fried food that you can be pick up on as soon as you reach the parking lot. The inside isn't much better looking than the outside. Think Mel's Diner meets a thrift store. But the people working there are friendly and the food is awesome, I just hope that fly that was buzzing me didn't get a chance to walk over my food. I got the Quarter Travis; which is 1 quarter of the famous Travis burrito. Well they tell me it was a quarter anyway, personally I don't see how it could be possible for this massive thing to be only 25% of the full order. But anyway, the Travis is basically a burrito underneath a plate of fries, and for me, coated with Red Chili. But this isn't a Taco Bell burrito, it's mammoth and I can only imagine the full Travis is brought out to the dining room by a team of body builders that can pull over 500 on their deadlift. Burrito Supreme you are truly a false advertisement. Of my quarter Travis I ended up taking at least half of it home (on a side note; it still tasted good after reheating in my oven!). Kudos to K&I diner! Great food and friendly wait staff. It isn't a place to take your honey on a first date or an anniversary, but if you like going somewhere off the beaten path and you have a big stomach then you got to try K&I. -Rattlehead

I'm in Albuquerque from time to time, and usually make it a point to swing by "Grandmas" for breakfast. The food is cheap, service is fast, and the portions are HUGE. If i'm not feeling like a gut buster, I go with the Ham & Eggs or the Biscuits and Gravy. The biscuits and gravy I think are only $2 or so. With a drink and tip I usually spend about $5. When I want to destroy my stomach, I go for the Carne Adovada Smothered Burrito. The thing is HUGE but is soooo good. I usually can't finish it all in one sitting, but its still worth it. They also have a thing called The Travis that i'm too chicken to try. Its a smothered burrito, but has fries and chili piled on top. Again, its humongous. This place is a bit of a dive/locals joint, but don't worry they are all super friendly.

One of the places I miss since moving away from NM. The service is fast, the staff are so friendly, the portions are HUGE, the price is cheap! And the Travis platter is amazing. A Huge burrito smothered in chile, cheese, fries. We would share it (my family of 5) and have enough for another meal (or 2) for all of us...for a whopping $15.00!

I loved their food and their friendly home-style welcome. I have had their Travis burgers, chicken fried steak, carne adovado, biscuits and gravy (all at different occasions, of course) and truly could not eat the entire meal. This is a gold-mine to my palate!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
