I've never been to Benihana's but I reckon this place is similar. It was fun to see the cook's ninja skills with their knifes and fire. The food was pretty darn good, and we also had some nice drinks at the bar. There's no sushi at the place we went to, but I guess they have a sushi bar in a spot next door.

I have always had a good experience here, but last night was a different story. My steak came out extremely tough and tasteless, the veggies were very greasy and salty. I would need serious convincing to come back.

On our last night in Albuquerque the family headed over to one of our favorite dining spots, Japanese Kitchen. It's a teppanyaki grill style japanese restaurant with great quality food. Our dinner was as memorable as ever with that interactive experience this style of restaurant brings. Yummy food, strong tropical style drinks & entertaining atmosphere make Japanese Kitchen a dining destination for sure.

I ate here Saturday night with my family and some friends--we thought our kids would enjoy the show, which they did. We had an early reservation (5:30, when they open) and we were all on time and seated promptly (they tell you that they'll cancel your reservation if your entire party isn't there within ten minutes after the reservation). Since there were seven of us, we had the table to ourselves. Service was pretty prompt and our cook was excellent. I had the NY steak and shrimp with fried rice. My friend and I ordered a tuna roll and a dragon roll and I had a Japanese Colada. The sushi was fresh and delicious, as was my main dish--they steak perfectly tender and cooked to rare/medium rare. My colada was rather flavorless. While our food was good and the service was prompt, our experience here was that the staff does not wish for patrons to linger and visit, as the venting over the grill is loud and the waitress rushed us through our entire meal, though we fought with some resistance. I get it--they had reservations (probably every hour) waiting and since they have to fill up an entire table before people can eat, they have to keep things moving. At the same time, considering how much the food costs, it's a drag to be rushed so much. My husband and I came for a 1 pm lunch on a Friday a couple of months ago and the service was much more laid back, but the food wasn't as good. I'm sort of torn as to how many stars to give them. Based on this meal alone, the food was a 4.5 and the service was a 3. Averaged with our lunch experience, I guess a solid 4 is probably appropriate.

Steak House side is OK, a little pricey. Good if you like salt and butter. (Sushi is what makes JK special.) Tepan was able to make fried rice and veggies vegan: cooked first on the grill. Salmon was good. Others enjoyed their steak. Lots of families and birthdays. Good service. JK Sushi is 1000x better.

Get double fried rice! Trust me. The food was excellent and the show is fun ( I want to catch eggshells in my hat). I came here for the first time and really enjoyed the food. The wait staff did forget about me once I had my first beer in hand. I waited about 10 min for a second beer once I finished the first one (bummer). Other than that I would definitely come back. Everyone reserves a second chance, right? :) P.s. Don't forget to get double rice ( you will only thank me later)

The food was good, and they do have some interesting specialty drinks, but there are other places I would go in Albuquerque for Teppan. I really like udon noodles, but all they offer is white rice or fried rice (at an extra charge).

Very busy, but the food is great. I've had dinner and lunch and its always good. I usually get the same thing but it is always perfect. The sauce they provide for the meat is amazing.

In my opinion, this is the most authentic Japanese/sushi restaurant in ABQ. By authentic, i mean it is actually run by Japanese people who know how to serve authentic Japanese dishes. This is not a sushi place owned by non-Japanese people that specialize in pleasing the "california roll" palate. Instead, you have to appreciate Japanese cuisine outside of the standard caterpillar/dragon fly rolls.

My boyfriend and I wanted some teppanyaki on this particular evening and it was either Japanese Kitchen or Sakura. The latter was too far away and we were starving, so our decision was made. We had a little bit of trouble finding the place. It's tucked away between a tall office building and a parking garage, if I remember correctly, so don't fret if it doesn't appear where the map says it should be. But once we stepped inside, our troubles vanished. The restaurant is quite roomy and seems to be comprised of several sections: a room full of teppan tables, a room of standard tables and booths, a bar area upstairs, and a separate building just for sushi. The ambience was great in the teppanyaki section, so I would assume that it's similar throughout the rest of the establishment. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and my boyfriend got the sukiyaki steak, medium-rare. We also got the seafood tempura appetizer, which was decent. (I wish there had been more shrimp.) Our waitress never kept us waiting for long, so the service was good. Our chef was nice and funny, but a little distracted. I've seen better and I've seen worse, but this one definitely leans towards the better side of the scale. Good amount of tricks, but at some really excellent places I've been to, the entertainment is nearly nonstop. That being said, the food was delicious. The meat was cooked just right and the amount of seasoning and sauce was perfect. The prices were pretty standard for teppanyaki, about $14 to $20 a plate. I should note that the teppanyaki room was packed by 6:30, and it was a Monday, so clearly Japanese Kitchen is worth a visit. I would definitely come here again.

I ate here last night with my husband. I was feeling under the weather and was in serious need of a good bowl of ramen. I found out when we got there, that they only have it on their lunch menu. However, they were wonderful and made an exception for me. Everything was perfect and I am so thankful! I will be back in the future when I am feeling better for some sushi. :)

Good sushi for the price. The rolls are reasonably priced and good sushi. The sushi chef from Japan was fun to watch and made some great rolls. I liked the miso soup and mochi ice cream after dinner. I had 3 rolls and some sashi and was needless to say full. I can't remember. The sushi boat looks like a good deal for a group. The sake was awesome. This restaurant has a nice casual vib. I've been doing for at least 5 years and it's still the same consistent place. Never would have discovered this gem for sushi in ALB unless I was staying at the Marriott. Next time I'm going to try their benehanna kitchen across the plaza from them (same owners I think).

My family and I love Japanese Kitchen! If you go to the sushi side or the teppan, you won't be disappointed! The staff is friendly and always pays attention. I've never had to ask for refill! I would recommend to anyone looking for great Japanese food!

  • Citizen T.

Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in town. The Teppan, and the Sushi bar are equally excellent and the quality and quantity for the price is unmatched. The tempura is amazing too. I've been a customer for years and will continue to be. Gambatte!

  • Breena S.

It was a pretty good atmosphere and great service. The chef was very unique and did some fun tricks with fire, really impressed our 4 year old. We didn't really like the mixed vegetables in the fried rice, but we loved the other vegetables. The scallops, shrimp, and teriyaki chicken was amazing!!

  • Rand R.

Typical teppan restaurant. Good food, good service, kind of pricey. My only negatives--(1) they really rush you through your dinner. Each course is brought out in lightning speed, often before everyone is done with the prior one. (2) Every entree tastes very much like all the others. Yes, of course, the various meats and seafood options are different and taste so, but the way they are prepared is exactly the same, resulting in dishes that taste very similar. I say go for the teppan experience, have a drink, enjoy it for what it is, but be prepared to pay a lot for it.

  • Candia M.

Typical Japanese-American style grill. Great for kids. I am not a fan of the butter and oil saturated meats and rice thing but for someone who is, this place has good service and is as good as the next one, maybe better because they had more than one option when I asked for a glass of white wine. Clean and fun for the kiddos. Saw a couple of young (teenage) couples. I think for the younger crowd this is a great idea for an evening out.

  • J-Shawna A.

I have been to the sushi side plenty of times. I made a reservation for the Hibachi weeks in advance for my friends going away dinner, they were very accommodating they allowed me to book my reservation weeks in advance and made everything work with our group size. The service was excellent and food was delicious. I ordered filet mignon and side of shrimp with fried rice everything was cooked to perfection. I will definitely come back.

  • Cass A.

Decent Tepan, sushi is better but usually hit or miss. Saw some one drink maybe 6 alcoholic beverages then the managers or some random women working there asked the person if they were driving, after they had 6 drinks. I don't respect service like that, ask someone after 2 or 3 drinks not 6. That was on the Tepan side. The young men in sushi side who bus tables were extremely friendly and refilled waters and drinks while the waitresses barely came around and give poor service. Seriously wish I could tip just the bus boys. Not many sushi places in Albuquerque and this one is probably one of the better ones, which is sad.

The thing about Japanese Kitchen is.... their sushi is fresh and the food on their menu is authentic. It is probably the one of the only Japanese Restaurants owned and run by Japanese Immigrants. I usually go in and order their Bento boxes and it is amazing. Last night I had their Udon Noodle soup and it was delicious. It is one of those places that have been in ABQ for a very long time. If you are a Japanese food (not just sushi) fanatic do give this place a try. I can't speak for the side that has Teppan, but the side that serves regular Japanese food and sushi is definitely a must try.

  • Snehal Rudra B.

I am a bit of a snob when it comes to sushi. When we moved to Albuquerque from the east coast years ago, I tried a number of sushi places around the city to find my regular joint. I ultimately settled on Japanese kitchen. They serve, hands down, the freshest fish in town. They also have some good specials on the menu. Over the years, I have enjoyed Samma, kohada, black snapper, Japanese oyster, and other selections of fish. They are also the only sushi bar in town thAt has good quality tuna toro on offer. I don't usually eat rolls, so can't comment on it, but for nigiri, this is the place to go.

    (4)
  • A C.

If the onion volcano keeps amazing you through your old age, this is the place for you. If you want decent rolls or nigiri , go somewhere else .

We went here for our aniiversary and we had a really nice time. I had never been to a place like this before, but I plan on going back for sure! They start you off with a beef broth with paper thin sliced mushrooms in it....it was okay. Next, you get a small salad with this fantastic vinegrette dressing. On the advice of another reviewer, we had the egg rolls....and he was right. They were large, well stuffed and the skin was very light and crispy....fabuolous. My only complaint of the egg rolls was the sauce they served it with, had a dallop of the spicy mustard on it (I thought it was butter), and I don't do well with spicy sooooo...... The chef came out and actually scared me a bit when he yelled and smacked the grill, so keep that in mind if you're still eating your egg roll, like I was. The chef then proceeded to make the fried rice, and a vegetable mix. We all got a sample of some shrimp with our rice and it was yummy. I ordered the filet mignon and the chicken and the chef cooked it perfectly. My husband ordered the teriyaki filet mignon and it was wonderful. The chef finished off the meal with some grilled bean sprouts. Sitting with strangers was also a bit weird........both bottles of soy sauce ended up on the other side of the table. Our busboy was very attentive, constantly filling our glasses......he was also humming everytime he did it which I thought was a hoot! All in all, it was a wonderful evening and I cannot wait to bring my 8 year old here. He will love it!

Being from the 505 I thought I'd show my Yelp Travelers around. This place is what I measure every other Tepan/Jap Gill against. Down to the basic Teriyaki Chicken dish with fried rice it instantly becomes memorable. My fav is the steak and shrimp. And oh my gosh you have to get an order of the egg rolls! Seriously you think you have tasted some of the best but wait till you taste these babies! Must be in the technique, ingredients, or sauce...I have yet to figure it out. As with most of these places the dinner experience itself can be a fun atmosphere for celebrations and groups. I have many good memories here. MOST OF ALL ask for a Saki Margarita....YUM! 2-3 later and whoosh man those are tasty. This will stand out in your books even if your pitting it up against the high cards. Try to make a reservation at least 24-48 hours in advance if your going for a weekend for dinner. Enjoy and take an empty tummy with you.

They have two styles of restaurant: teppanyaki and regular sushi/menu bar. They are separate and at walking distance. I prefer the regular side. The service is good and family friendly. If you're a bit adventurous, try the unaju donburi (eel with rice). Its super-delicious.
