It had been nearly five months since we first tried Gravy and were underwhelmed, but after seeing several reviews indicating that things had improved, we decided it was time to give it another try. I'm pleased to say that our experience was much better this time, but I can't help but wonder if it was largely because of the fact that when we walked in on a Monday night a little after 6:00pm, there were no other tables occupied at all and only one other patron sitting at the counter, so there really wouldn't have been any excuse to receive poor service and long wait times in an empty restaurant. So of course the service was attentive, and the food came out in only about 15 minutes (vs. 45 minutes on our first visit) because there were no other orders ahead of ours (the lady at the counter already had her food when we came in). This time I had the beef stroganoff and my husband had the pork chop. Both entrees were great, and both were served hot this time. I hope the good food and service holds up during their busier times, and I hope that the problems they experienced when first opening have been corrected and that other patrons who tried them before and weren't impressed consider giving them another shot. I'd like to try them for breakfast and lunch some time, too!

This is the best vibe I have found in ABQ. For me eating out is all about ambience and presentation. The food was gourmet and came out fast. Creative dishes served with a great presentation at a reasonable price. Owner hooked us up with free fried green tomatoes and told us the backstory of the building. There seems to be one waitress who is a bit spacey... but other than that it was the best!

I had lunch here today and everything about my experience was excellent. I have eaten here several times and the food is always very good, but today it exceeded my expectations. I had the breakfast sandwich. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. The server was friendly, attentive and efficient. I will be recommending Gravy to all my friends and family.

We just ate here for the first time and really enjoyed it! We've been wanting to try it since they opened months ago and finally made it in. First off, the owners did a great job keeping some of the charm of the long time diner (Milton's) that it replaced but still making a very nice and cool place to eat. The decor is fun and has a Jetson's feel more than mid century with just enough of the original reused. The service was very prompt and friendly! We split two meals, the flight of pancakes and the breakfast sandwich. Both were excellent! The flight of pancakes comes with three very unique pancakes, pineapple upside down, red velvet and cinnamon roll. They all taste exactly like their namesake and we agreed that the red velvet didn't translate well into a pancake but did taste exactly like red velvet cake. The breakfast sandwich was delicious and, like the name of the restaurant would indicate, floating in a pool of...... Yep, you guessed it, gravy. While the sandwich was really tasty, the presentation did make it difficult to consume with your hands, but I did it anyway.... It's a sandwich after all. I had seen some negative reviews and heard some long wait horror stories involving cold meals but that was not our experience at all. Gravy is an excellent addition to the revitalization of East downtown and definitely worth checking out. Also, they serve beer, so you could get "breakfast drunk", if that's your thing.

Food was fantastic! I had the fried chicken sandwich and my friend had the breakfast sandwich -- both were delectable! Fries weren't as crispy as I was hoping for. Portions were fairly large-- had enough to take home. Food gets 4/5 stars. However, once we had our food we didn't see our waitress for a solid 45 minutes--not a single employee even looked in our general direction so we could flag someone down. COME ON. the table next to us seemed to be in a similar predicament. Will not be returning unless they step it up with the service. Service: 1/5 stars.

I had brunch at Gravy's on Sunday with a friend and it was completely forgettable. I ordered the Belgian waffle, which was disappointing. It tasted and looked as if pancake batter was used instead of a waffle battle which resulted in a very floppy waffle. The do it yourself waffles at hotel breakfast bars are way better! My friend got the pancake flight which was okay. We both agreed that the red velvet pancake tasted like boxed red velvet cake mix. We shared the brisket hash which wasn't very exciting either. The brisket itself was passable but the bell-peppers and onions in the hash were completely raw. What I was really missing in the hash were potatoes. There were a couple little chunks of potatoes hiding out in the hash, but the amount was so minuscule that it was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

From the street the line of tap handles looks really impressive, but the tap list is pretty uninspired. It's good that they've kept it predominantly local, with something like 5 taps devoted to Marble, but there's a lot of great beer out there, and if you've got 25 taps, mix it up. Stay local, but how about some La Cumbre? How about some Ska? The food is uninspired. Diner redesigned? Mashed potatoes are mashed potatoes, and if they're bad, they're bad. Cold, heavy, thick and lumpy. They were bad. They don't skimp on the Brussels sprouts, which they rebranded "Brussel Sprouts." I hate Brussels sprouts. The prices are pretty high, especially for mediocre diner food. Uninspired food. Uninspired beer selection. Overpriced. Oh, and the shitty hipster music is too loud.

Have been here a couple of times and the food was great! Mac and cheese balls were tasty and the fried green tomatoes with pork belly was delicious! Also tried the Chicken Fried Steak and it was top notch. They have a great selection of beers on tap. Love the decor...reminds me of a diner you'd see on Mad Men - modern yet retro. Cool light fixtures and really awesome ceiling feature. Can't wait to try the breakfast menu. And yay for another cool Edo restaurant!

Great service, cool mod-retro interior, nice energy. Really like what they've done with the building. Prices are fair, food is solid.

I've been waiting for Gravy to open and was excited to try it out. Overall we had a good experience but it's clear they still have a few things to work out since they are new. Our main issue is that we were sat next to the restrooms and it was extremely hot. It was about 35 degrees outside and 85 degrees at our booth. However, the rest of the restaurant felt comfortable. We brought this issue up to our server and he adjusted the thermostat. My food was great! I loved the Asian Pork Chops! The other three people I went with enjoyed their meals as well. Our server was and accommodating, the atmosphere was pleasant, and it was extremely clean. Once the "new kid on the block" kinks are worked out, I'm sure this will be my new favorite restaurant. I can't wait to return and try it again!

Went with a friend for breakfast on Saturday and I was wary having read so many mediocre and one star reviews here. Boy was I surprised! Our breakfast was great! On the first go-round pancakes came out cold, but replaced immediately. (Mistakes happen--no big deal) And what a tasty treat. The pineapple pancake was delish. My friend had the breakfast sandwich. Fantastic! Crunchy chicken, biscuits like grandma used to make, and savory sausage gravy and an egg over easy.... YUM. My few suggestions: green chile in the gravy would make the breakfast sandwich (and the biscuits and gravy) phenomenal, and a mini stack of pancakes would be great. And as a few have mentioned a couple of gluten free options would be appreciated. Our service was fine and we will be back. Oh and the reviewer who says the decor was confusing? Must be confused. I think they did a great job doing a modern diner. Super fun and comfy.

It takes a lot for me to write a bad review, honestly. I work in the restaurant business and am generally very forgiving/patient, particularly when it comes to brand new places. Unfortunately, I didn't even get a chance to try the food at Gravy. My mother suffers from Celiac (an actual auto-immune disease that makes her unable to digest gluten--I promise she isn't on the gluten-free-fad-diet train, she really, really can't have it). She always calls restaurants ahead of time to ask if they are able to accommodate a gluten free diet, and when she did so at Gravy, she was told that while they didn't have a full on gluten-free menu, they would be happy to figure something out. We felt optimistic, especially since Holy Cow has been pretty good about working with her, and from what I understand, the two restaurants are owned by the same people (I could be wrong about this). Sadly, when we got to Gravy and she asked about it before we were seated, she was told, "Well, it's a restaurant called Gravy. So, no." That's it. Look, I get that not every restaurant can accommodate every single person's food allergies and preferences. And maybe we were silly to think that a place called Gravy would be able to do so for us. But I will say that my mother was treated with incredible rudeness, something anyone in the restaurant industry should know is a terrible way to do business. Had they simply explained that they didn't feel comfortable serving someone with a severe gluten allergy and that they were sorry they couldn't help us, we would have been disappointed but I may have come back some other time. Since we were treated so unkindly right off the bat, I will not be returning. I hope management is able to address matters like this one with their staff before they drive away more business.

How about a patty melt that doesn't melt? That's right. ordered the patty melt with cheddar cheese. It came out unmelted. The waiter told me the cook said this kind of cheese doesn't melt! Nothing more be said. Gravy Is no gravy train

Great place to eat. The food was decadent and very flavorful! I enjoyed it thoroughly! We were served promptly. They also have a pretty decent beer selection.

Very good food, adorable atmosphere. My son and I were super hungry and drove past and decided to take a chance even though Gravy has such mixed reviews. The sign was too cute to pass up and we were curious about how it looked inside, we were not disappointed. It has a very retro Brady Bunch feel to it with a hint of Jetsons, it was precious and comfortable and even the bathrooms were cute (and very clean). I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and my son got the Brisket Hash. To drink he got lemonade and I got black coffee, our cups were never allowed to get low, service was good, food was served quickly and piping hot and very yummy. We were thrilled that we gave it a try and will definitely be back next time we are in town. Good job Gravy!

The food is delicious!!!! The service and atmosphere were great too. We stopped in here for brunch and they had craft beer too. I'm a vegetarian and their eggplant sandwich was a perfect option. My boyfriend had the chicken pot pie. We both approved.

It was like taking a step back into Mad Men with the funky diner decor. Sat at the bar and wasn't sure who our server was the entire time but the whole staff was pretty nice and attentive. The breakfast sandwich is tasty, they can fry a mean piece of chicken. My only issue is that it's ironic a place called "Gravy" doesn't really have very good gravy. Similar to a previous post, the gravy was bland and tasted like flour. Throw some green chile in it! Or paprika! Or something.

I have been there a total of 3 times and every time I have gone it has been really really good. Twice I have had the steak and have been once for breakfast. Breakfast was really good had huevos rancheros it was really good had pancakes as well also really good.

Delicious!! I felt like I was on vacation. It was very comfortable, and I loved the decor. We had the cinnamon roll pancakes and the breakfast sandwich. Staff was friendly and we would totally go back.

I eat the eggplant sandwich and found it to be quite tasty! The flavor of the Hummus and the Eggplant mixed really well. The Eggplant was thinly sliced and fried to a crispy texture. While it tasted great it gave me indigestion afterwards because it was so greasy. I also found the latte to be bitter tasting but it was hot and served in a huge cup.

I currently have plenty of time to write my review while I wait for someone to come by and see if my empty glass might like some new water, or perhaps if I might like my check because we finished eating 10 minutes ago...Bottom line here, the service was terrible. Our food arrived after about 20 minutes and we had yet to receive our drinks. When the food came, we weren't given any silverware. The eggs Benedict was borderline terrible. The "hash browns" we're cold and stringy, the hollandaise was the strangest bright orangeish-yellow color and appeared to be on the edge of breaking. The ham which sat below an over cooked egg looked like it came straight from a package of discount deli meat. I've honestly seen a nicer looking plate at Denny's...We also gave the pancake flight a go and I'm happy to report that the Cinnamon pancake and the pineapple upside down pancakes were totally okay. I wouldn't drive across town to enjoy them, but they were decent. The red velvet pancake however, if you can call it a pancake, was gummy and virtually flavorless. I hope for Gravy's sake that we just got a bad batch because it was inedible. We each took one bite and gave up. Perhaps they were understaffed, maybe something fishy fell into the red velvet batter, perhaps we'll try it again. But I wouldn't expect much out of this place.

It was such an amazing atmosphere!! The music was jamming and I loved the decor. There was little to meow wait. The food was really tasty. Great new spot. New, fun and hip. Definitely will be back.

There was little in the $10 salad to recommend it-but the tired and slimy lettuce was extremely off-putting - they will not be getting a 2nd chance from me.

I live in the neighborhood so was VERY EXCITED when Gravy finally opened. My first visit was a week after they opened and it was crazy busy so I cut our poor server some slack. The food was OK, mashed potatoes and gravy yummy, fried chicken OK, mac and cheese was tasteless. Second visit was the weekend after Christmas around 2:00 pm. The place was a mess, cleaning rags left on the counter, dirty glasses in the drink area. Staff standing around talking, made no effort to clean up while we were there. Patty melt was OK. Today I could not get hostess to acknowledge me and when she walked away from the cash register to talk with a co-worker, I left. I've heard that Gravy hired staff away from Standard Diner, they should have gone to Mannie's where the customer service is stellar. This place won't last long unless they seriously get it together.

Gravy is a nice classic diner on Route 66. The breakfast food was pretty good with an average selection. Building was clean and service was average good. The bathrooms were clean and modern which is always a good sign in a restaurant.

I had a chicken fried steak and that and the mashed potatoes were pretty good but the plate also came with Brussel sprouts that had this kind of Asian sauce on them. I love Brussel sprouts and although these weren't bad they just clashed with the chicken fried steak. Like a piece of sushi served with pot pie. The service was horrible. I used to wait tables so I generally will always leave some kind of tip but the service was so poor I left nothing. I haven't done that in years. In short I don't think I will be back as nothing was particularly special

Our new favorite place Grove was closed Mon so we went to this place. Service wasn't too good, food was ok 6 outta 10. Everything woulda been great, but we found several pieces of hair in the food. So CHECK YOUR FOOD BEFORE YOU START MUNCHING.

This is more of a 2.5 review than a 3. My boyfriend and I wanted to like it but we both left a little disappointed. We decided to try breakfast on a Saturday a few weeks ago. It took the staff almost 5 minutes to come and ask what we wanted to drink. I ordered the Brisket hash. My hash came with zero potatoes, after I asked the waiter why my hash had no potatoes even though on the menu it was first ingredient he proceeded to tell me that it did have potatoes and that I just wasn't looking hard enough. I thought that his response demonstrated poor customer service, he had no sympathy and did not even look to see if they were in there. There were no potatoes on my plate! My boyfriend got the omelet which he said was ok. He asked for the caramelized onions and they were cooked but not caramelized. He also ordered a pancake on the side so he could try them out, he never received his pancake, it seems the waiter completely forgot about it. We were so ticked we didn't bring it to his attention. The only thing we enjoyed was the mac and cheese balls as an appetizer. We are going to give it one more chance in hopes that they were having a bad morning but our expectations are not high.

I had a chicken pot pie which was presented beautifully. Taste wasn't as exciting. Vegetables cut too small for a hearty meal, and there was an odd kind of sweet taste. My lunch date had the eggplant sandwich which was a little bland. The interior is cold and cacaphonus. For the prices I won't be back.

Standard dinner food with a gourmet twist. Like the BBQ chicken and seared tuna salad, though they'd be better off served in bowls. Yummy shakes. Fries aren't crispy, next time I'll ask for extra crispy. Overall, it's a win with a funky ambience.

Took over an hour to get served for lunch. Place was crowded, service was horrible. Got the eggs Benedict which you usually can't go wrong with, by far the worst I've had in NM. Has all the look and feel of a diner but with a bunch of different beer on tap??? Not really what you expect for a breakfast all day kind of place. Don't think this place will last unless they can get it together quickly.

  • Gloria R.

Great breakfast and friendly staff! Why the mixed reviews??? We had a wonderful meal, served in a timely manner and an amazing server. We ordered the 3 pancakes (red velvet, pineapple and one other) a side of bacon, biscuits and gravy. All of it was delicious! It was our first time and we plan to go back and try lunch. Both of us eat out a lot, we travel a lot and know really good food. We never eat at fast food places and have very high standards. Did we get lucky? We love that it's a local diner and that we are supporting local economy.

We went to Gravy on a Friday evening. We were interested in checking out the "re-purposed" diner - had it been a Denny's or had it been Milton's? Turns out it had been both - in that order. One of the (I believe, THE) first Denny's in ABQ, it was subsequently Milton's for a spell. As we walked in we appreciated the attention to detail given the exterior; the wood trim had been stained a rich dark color, the stones were clean and solid and it looks as though they'll be landscaping in the spring (hope so! hint!). The attention to detail in the interior was just as favorable; the kitschy light fixtures, the detail on the ceilings, VERY cool! From previous reviews I guess we're glad we waited a bit; no paint smell, and the service was pretty good. Of course we sat at the bar; a) we get faster service at the bar wherever we go - not to mention getting seated faster b) we get entertainment watching the staff in front of as well as behind the counter and c) I'm just a "sit at the bar" kinda guy. So, we ordered from the menu. It was tough because we wanted one of everything! It's clear some of the previous reviewers didn't "get" Gravy; these aren't your traditional dishes, rather they are contemporary "takes" on classic favorites. The Missus and I usually order two items and share 'em so this time we got the Lobster and Avocado Salad and the Chicken Pot Pie. From the outset let me say both were delicious! And, from the outset let me say the Chicken Pot Pie was not Pie. It was, indeed, delicious thigh meet in a cream sauce with peas and carrots served over biscuits - and I will repeat, it was delicious! So was the Lobster and Avocado Salad. The fish was fresh (important in the desert!) and the vinaigrette was tangy! As for the reviewer who complained about the beer; my suggestion is they go to Denny's since Denny's doesn't have beer and their dishes are the staid and stale fair the reviewer was apparently hoping for. As for me I was very pleased to see this unique, locally owned diner was serving our unique local craft brews! Before we left we agreed this was a place we were going to return to and get one of everything, even if it takes several trips. Yes, the service can use a little improvement; everyone was very friendly and accommodating and as they grow more accustomed to their situation and implement improvements in their "line" and their service they'll improve. I absolutely count on them earning that fifth star soon. And in the meantime, if it's just a little sketchy, well, I call that atmosphere and I was very content at Gravy.

We went there for lunch this weekend. We went late, around 2:30. Service, my big complaint last time, was amazing. In fairness, there was only one other occupied table in the place, so bad service would have been inexcusable. We had drinks, water and our order taken in 5-10 minutes from sitting down. Not bad. We finally got to try the chicken fried steak. I loved it. Spices are all there, the breading is great and the steak was correctly tenderized. The gravy was great. The potatoes, though, tasted a bit like they came from a box. I would sub those out for some french fries- their fries are great. Box mashed potatoes? Not so great. I could be wrong, but they definitely had that flavor. I got the BBQ chicken salad. It's huge! I was not expecting a portion that large, even though with how large all of other portions are, it would not have surprised me. The flavors were good. BBQ chicken (grilled), corn, poblano dressing and fresh mixed greens. It was nice. This was a very nice experience. Lost a point: some of the tables still looked a bit dirty. Taking a minute to wipe them down again would have really helped.

I went to Gravy for the first time today and it was awesome. The interior is beautiful, very retro modern yet inviting. It is definitely a great addition to the Edo neighborhood. The restaurant was packed when I got there. I sat at the bar and was greeted by a very beautiful and very attentive server. I ordered the breakfast sandwich which was fantastic! It comes with bacon, crispy fried chicken thigh, cheddar cheese, white gravy, an egg which I ordered medium rare, all of which is nestled in between two house made biscuits which were buttery, flaky and divine. It was one of if not the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had!! Well done Gravy! I will be back to try everything else on the menu. I am super stoked for Albuqueque! They have needed a place like this for a long time!

I went to this place just expecting something new and was disappointed i ordered chicken fried steak and eggs omg worse ever, the sunny side eggs were overdone the meat was chewy n the flour covering a mystery and don't get me started on the potatoes, the only good thing was the buttermilk biscuit sitting alone bravely surrounded by that horrible food. The table next to me had the chicken n it was daaaaark brown a step from burned the horror I would never go back..

To be fair I came at their peak rush on a Sunday. I wish them the best with their new business. The food was plentiful but a little bland - at least my breakfast hash was. The chicken fried steak was good, and their red chile very rich and smokey. Some of the best red I've had in a while.

Today is Gravy's second day, and despite some typical new restaurant glitches, it was outstanding. The menu is creative and the food was delish. The server was responsive and made up for the new locale delays. I'll give it a few weeks to work out the kinks, and then I'll be back.

Just Ok. The three of us came in excited and enthusiastic about eating here (we're fans of sister restaurant Holy Cow). The tuna melt sandwich was over cooked and dry. The filo pastry with spinach, artichoke and feta was dry, lacked filling and flavor. We will give Gravy another month or two and try again. Thanks for reading. The Bike Chaplain

I have been here several times now for breakfast and dinner. My wife and I really enjoy this place! BTW she has a gluten sensitivity and they are always accommodating and there have been no problems. Chicken fried steak was 7 out of 10. I would probably go with 3.5 stars for the food but the beer selection and mid century ambience easily add the extra half star.

Don't go if you need gluten-free. I was excited to try this place and dragged five friends across town to do so. I have celiac disease so have to get gluten-free food and I called a couple of weeks ago and was told it would be no problem. When we went inside, I asked the guy if they have a GF menu and he said (while rolling his eyes) "Uh, you're in a restaurant called GRAVY. So...no." I said, "really -- nothing?", and he said "I guess you could eat some lettuce, but its not going to be gluten-free".

Nice atmosphere, poor, cold food, and very, very bad service :( Check added wrong, didn't have silverware with our food, never got a drink we ordered when we sat down until long after we ate our food. Food was not what we ordered, cold, and tasteless. We hoped it was all a horrible fluke with just our table but after looking around, it was obvious that other tables were having problems too. I got sad watching so much food sitting ignored in the window for 10+ minutes, getting colder and colder. This isn't even all that was off. Please re-think any decision to dine here until something changes.

A friend suggested Gravy for dinner one evening while hitting all the points people mention; Holy Cow, diner, new, etc. I was torn between the meat loaf and chicken fried steak. When in this situation, I'll typically ask the server to be the tie breaker, as they may have tried the food or have heard customer complaints. The server suggested I go with the chicken fried steak and stated "the brussels sprouts are so good." That did it for me, as I cook brussels sprouts all the time and was looking forward to these amazing brussels sprouts. When our food finally came out, my order was wrong. I got to sit at the table while my friend ate more than half of his meal alone. My food came out and my first thought was, 'damn, I should have taken the other plate.' The chicken fried steak was so tough, I had step it up to a steak knife, it was also tasteless. The brussels sprouts were burned and not in a crispy, delicious way, just burned; and so salty. The mashed potatoes were less than mediocre. I would have rather eaten at Cracker Barrel. The decor and location are really great. Gravy has potential. The menu has some great menu options. I cannot help but wonder what those prices are all about.

Stopped by for breakfast and left happy. Service was awesome, our waiter was quick, pleasant, and engaging. The food was good, came out if the kitchen fast, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the coffee cup was never empty. The only thing that would have been nice is a "seat yourself" sign. Other than that, we will be back.

Ive been working in the downtown area for over ten years, and what a breathe of fresh air this place is.. great food as well as great staff. The owner is one that works right alongside his employees and actually cares about their well being as well as his customers. A fantastic addition to downtown albuqueque. Be sure and try the chicken fried steak.

Was cruising the streets on Albuquerque and Michelle said "Lets eat something downtown" I suggested a new place that opened up and always look forward to something new. So Gravy was the Place. We walked in and no greeting, grabbed our own menu, and sat ourselves down. The energy was very off with it being uncomfortable just being there. I had to wave at the sever to get our order. Simply said, the service was horrible and the food was mediocre.

The food and atmosphere is great here. The only reason the food takes longer to come out to your table is because everything is made individually and fresh! This isn't a Denny's people! Just sit and relax, and enjoy the food!

We dined at Gravy on the first day it was open. It was filthy. My clothes were full of construction dust when we left. The bathroom was filthy. The exhaust fan in the kitchen didn't work well. We left smelling like grease. The food? Cold meatloaf, cold fries, over fried eggplant. We waited a very long time for that unappetizing food. The breakfast menu looked great. Other diners seemed to like their breakfast. Lunch menu was just ok. Hopefully it will get better. We really hope it gets cleaner & the food improves. It was the first day, after all.

My daughter ordered the Mac and cheese was more like mac and cream she didn't want to eat it so I tried was nasty. My son ordered the BBQ salad was soaking in there dressing which was disgusting. I ordered the brisket hash the potatoes and brisket where cut so small you couldnt tell which was which maybe it was to hide the lack of brisket which there was very little of. If you can't get Mac and cheese right you should be in the restrant business. Told the waitress that we weren't happy with salad and Mac and cheese so she took them back didn't take them off the bill we payed for everything figured they needed the money more then we do. Price's to high staff ok food disgusting save your money.

Visited for breakfast for the first time last weekend. The service was great and the menu had a variety of choices. Love the retro decor. I ordered the pineapple upside down cake pancakes, they were delicious, will only order 1 next time because the portions are huge. Everyone else I was with enjoyed their dishes.

I popped in on their first day... Not a smooth launch. First, the place was filthy. Every surface was dirty and the bathrooms were really dirty (someone had an assplosion in the toilet and it looked like it had been there for a while). The food was slow, cold, and unappetizing. Of course, I ordered off the lunch menu and they appeared to still be serving breakfast. About that: the whole place smelled like bacon. When I left, I smelled like bacon. I had to go home and change my clothes. These guys have been "remodeling" the old Milton's for over 2 years and it looks like they did very little. The Restaurant Impossible guys do much more to change a place in days, and somehow they managed to change very little in years. I've never been to a "new" restaurant with 40 years of filth built in. I don't see a reason to go back. If you want poorly prepared food, to leave smelling bacon-infused, and to be thoroughly disappointed, go to Gravy.

Train wreck. Can't comment on the food as we had to walk out after watching the total chaos that was this restaurant. The place was pretty full when we walk in for breakfast. There was no receptionist so we sat ourselves at the counter right in front of the kitchen. Always enjoy watching the cooks. We waited 10 minutes before a random person gave us some water. Another 5 minutes before our order was taken and then the wait really began. We watch as order after order was cooked and placed on the outgoing rack from the kitchen. The food never moved. An order of the breakfast potpie sat for over 15 minutes, no heat lamps. There was absolutely no direction, control or seemingly anyone who even cared in the front of the shop. The gal next to us at the counter left money for her coffee and walked out, we followed suit 5 minutes later. We'd spent over 45 minutes and had received water. None of our other ordered drinks, no cutlery, scant recognition we existed, we think our order was never even turned in. Some of the menu items look very interesting, but who would know how they taste. The place was not very clean on top of the other issues. Wait a couple of months for these people to get their s... together before you visit.

Went twice last week. Once for Lunch, and again for Dinner. Lunch wasn't terribly busy and service was so-so. Food on the other hand was great....my fried green tomato BLT was hot, delish, and ooey gooey with the pimento cheese. Side salad was a great choice and was plentiful. Dinner was again kinda quiet, but service was much more attentive thanks to Chris, one of the owners being at the helm. The fried chicken was hot, crispy and generously portioned. The collard greens was the real reason why I ordered the chicken in the first place and they didn't disappoint. Smashers were tasty, too. The biscuit looked great but was pretty dry. Overall, the vibe is great, and it definitely seems like it is a "diamond in the rough" just waiting to be polished up and properly displayed. Will definitely give it another try for breakfast....the pancake sampler I've read about seems like a must try.

Ive been jonesing for months to come here and see for myself what Gravy's all about. I like Holy Cow and it wouldnt be wrong to think their success would spill over to their sister restaurant, would it? Alas- the food looks beautiful, like they were destined for a photoshoot for a magazine, but there's just no follow through for the taste. My wife had the breakfast chicken sandwich while I had the breakfast burrito. When the sandwich arrived, I was instantly jealous because it looked SO good. However, the gravy was not great and really, the taste didnt live up to its vision. As for my breakfast burrito, it was decent for sure, but the red chile sauce felt rushed and like it was made from powder. A pancake ordered on the side was good on the first bite, then not so good for the rest. If you like food porn, by all means, do come here. Seriously gorgeous food. But taste could use some improvement. Hope that happens so Gravy can become a bona fida breakfast destination.

As much as I prefer positive comments, no can do on my dining experience here last night: 1. Turn down the AC - that was the start of my un-Comfort Food meal. 2. We were two - while it shouldn't be necessary to ask a server to make sure the meals come out at the same time, I did. They didn't. The 10 min differential allowed my meal to be stone cold - the casualty of wanting a shared dinner. 3. Meanwhile, my companion was very clear that she'd gladly settle for fewer pieces of fried chicken - all she cared about was it being white meat. 10 minutes after my pork bellies and fried tomatoes arrived, she was served a plate with 2 robust thighs (as in dark meat). 4. I normally wouldn't have considered pork bellies but I read someone's rave and figured, Why not? Why not: c'mon guys, at best these were lardons - 1" x 1/4" strips of thick cut bacon. No surprise that the tomatoes were also a bust, 10 min post- arrival. Question: Do you have to have eaten it in the South to know how to make a good pimento cheese? 5. On a positive note, even at room temperature, the mashed potatoes were awesome. Heads up: add a kids menu for customers who really only want about 1/3-1/2 of the size portion you're dishing up. It's less about price - and more about obesity. So, I ask myself: Have they just not worked out the kinks? I just don't think it works - now or six months from now. Unless we have an influx of hipster lumberjacks. Sorry - I really wanted to have a go-to diner, so I was ready to love it. Holy cow, what a disappointment.

I consider myself an expert when it comes to fried green tomatoes.....so of course I needed to try this place out. Before I get to the food, I need to discuss the cleanliness of the place.......not good, not the worst I have seen, but still not good. The service was okay, not the best, but okay. So the food was just average, I do not think the fried green tomatoes were "home made" they gave me a vibe of being pre-made and frozen. I was very disappointed.

I'd much prefer to rave about Gravy but to keep it real this eatery has been a mixed bag for me. I caught wind of it long before it opened its smudge covered door and once it was finally built out and running I heard not so good things. So I waited out a reasonable grace period to find out that Gravy is just ho-hum. First off, it should be more clean than it is! Practically brand new inside but there are boxes of sweeteners etc on the counter-clutter that doesn't invite you to sit there and of course no one was. I thought this was a diner? Our table had crumbs all over it, the bathroom is already looking rough.... *Each time I've visited Gravy the servers were very gracious.* For as long as it's taken to receive my meals I've been fairly underwhelmed with the kitchen however. Under seasoned is the main problem I believe. Guess I will just continue to wander the 505 searching for a Chicken Fried Steak to brag about. Something else is missing at Gravy besides salt. It's the smiling face that sees you walk in, welcomes you, gets you situated. This person brings energy and ensures the experience is good for the entire room. They make sure the food comes out in a reasonable time and tables bussed and ready for the inevitable line. Where is this competent leader? I will visit Gravy again to try a couple more things I've got my eye on. Personally I'd love to see a Brown Gravy offered as an option. That makes sense to me.

The sign out front caught my eye: Beer. Gravy. What else does one really need? I was intrigued, so I went in for a beer. They have a very nice selection of local and other brews that will satisfy any beerocrat. As far as the food goes, from the look of the place, I was expecting standard greasy spoon slop, but the food actually looked quite good (I saw some fried chicken that looked quite tasty). I already had dinner plans elsewhere, but decided to return the next day for some "eats." When I returned the next morning for breakfast, I had a hard time deciding what to get. The pancake selection was impressive. But the brisket hash sounded good, and I opted for that, with the green chile sauce. Wow! It was amazing...excellent flavor, just the right amount of heat. It was classic "stick to your ribs" food. It came with a frisbee sized tortilla. I did not expect food of this quality, and at a price that was very reasonable, given how good it was. The serving was huge...couldn't even finish 1/3 of it. The coffee was excellent too. Service was very fast and friendly. The decoration of the place is pretty cool too....sort of a googie-Jetsons decor. Loved it. Can't wait to return and try some of the other dishes. I wish I got to Albuquerque more often.

The fish tacos are possibly THE thing to order here. Nice balance of tangy coleslaw and battered fish. One thing I don't like in fish tacos, which is not a problem here, is when the fish has not been seasoned. The fish is very flavorful here. I also had the chicken fried steak (CFS) which is massive and will make a large man pass out before bedtime if completed. The CFS was hot and smothered in white gravy. It was definitely a contender for this strange niche trophy. (I understand most people do not consume CFS and those of us who do have borderline eating disorders.) The mac and cheese ... (wait hang on, NO I did NOT order all this for myself thank you very much! I was with my FAMILY...) anyway, the mac and cheese is great if you like creamy indulgent varieties. Big time kid pleaser. The pancakes are incredi...(WAIT, NO! I did not also order pancakes. This was at a different day! I do not have a serious eating disorder!... ok may a minor disorder but not a serious one....) Ahem! The panamacakes were great. I had the pineapple. The owner came by to evaluate and he complained that there was too much pineapple and that they were over cooked. Whatever! They were perfect! I recommend you order them extra crisp with too much pineapple. (just hope the chef doesn't take that liberty too far...) Regarding the recent improvements that reviewers have been eluding to, I can attest that they've done a great job getting the flow down. I stopped in for lunch ON A TOTALLY DIFFERENT DAY. Total time for lunch: 35 minutes. Total cost $18. Food was good, hot, and correct.I was greeted within 1 minute of arriving and seated quickly. The waiter came to the table in less than 2 minutes. I ordered the burger in celebration that they offer a burger. The burger came out in 12 minutes cooked medium-rare and correct. It was Dagwood tall and caused juice to run down my hand. I'd recommend wearing a t-shirt or those 80's style elastic sweatbands on your wrist if you're too proud to use a fork on a burger, as I am. The fries were fresh, real cut potato, and fried for the correct amount of time to get the right color and texture.

Food and service was excellent. I had the breakfast sandwich and my husband had the berry cream cheese French toast. I'd give it 5 stars except the restaurant felt dirty. The windows were filthy with fingerprints and the tables weren't thoroughly cleaned. A place that is surrounded in windows should showcase them...

There's quality and quantity - Gravy seems to go for quantity. We had the fried chicken - it tasted like KFC - not even an exaggeration. The fried chicken tasted like KFC and the "brown" gravy (beef gravy) tasted EXACTLY like KFC's gravy. Maybe the kitchen was playing a joke on us. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and extremely heavy. The collard greens were pretty solid. Overall, it's overpriced and for the quality, but I guess since you are getting 2 meals out of each plate, it's good quantity.

First of all, I support local restaurants ALOT. Second, I'm so glad that Gravy finally opened..........I do miss Milton's though. I'm happy that the very nice owner has a successful new restaurant. But after three visits I've decided that it's not for me. The music is loud. The food doesn't wow me......hashbrowns were mostly raw, toast was drenched in butter (margarine?), the omelette was good. Lastly, the staff is not very friendly. No one checked on me, brought me my check, asked how my meal was, or was very thankful at checkout.

I really wanted to like this restaurant. When you walk in, the decor is trendy and tasteful. They have a large collection of local brews on tap. We were greeted and told to sit where we wanted. But, it went downhill from there. Our party consisted of 3 adults and one child. We ordered a cheeseburger, an Italian chopped salad, a spring salad and mac n cheese for the kid. The cheeseburger was ordered without lettuce, onion and pickles, all of which were on it when it arrived. Not a biggie, easy enough to remove. As my friend removed the shredded lettuce we noticed that it was very brown, not just a little brown in places but, it should have been thrown out brown. The fries that came with the burger looked like fresh cut potatoes but they had weird, spongy, freezer-burned looking spots. The Italian salad had ingredients not mentioned in the menu and was lacking in substance. My friend that ordered it happens to be allergic to one of the unmentioned ingredients. They brought her a new salad and it was good. I had the spring salad, it was fine. Not sure it was worth returning for and I know I make a similar salad at home and it's much better. The mac n cheese was a hit with the kid. I tasted it and it was good. The redeeming value of the cafe was the service, the server was quite attentive and took care of all of our problems. Ultimately they took the salad and burger off of the bill without us asking for it. I doubt that we will return, there are too many other restaurants that are better but from reading the other reviews, their strong suit may be their breakfasts. So my advice is take this review with a grain of salt and give Gravy a try, we may have just hit it at a bad time.

I'm completely buying the theory a friend passed along about this place, and the plates it serves up: Gravy is completely bucking the modern eatery trend. Instead of small plates with feel-good, locally-sourced-picked-this-morning produce, Gravy specializes in just piling that motherf@#ker to oblivion. The philosophy is essentially hey, you're gonna pay dearly for these calories and you'll love every bite of 'em. Seat yourself at the counter and watch the kitchen kick out dish after towering dish, there's no skimping on anything around here; if you're looking for an artisan take on Croque Madame, you best look elsewhere. Which isn't to say the place isn't, at its heart, artisan. It's a refreshing take on the old diner concept that reminds me, virtually precisely, of the Valley Ho in Scottsdale. The food is good and often very good; people sound like stoners when they talk about the pineapple upside down pancakes, I've had them, they're that salivating. The steak frites is an astonishing lunch deal. The menu also has its less-than-interesting finds like the chicken pot pie and the french toast stack that somehow manages to cram a vat of cream cheese between the toast, totally unnecessary. Surprisingly, the very best dish in my experience is the one that doesn't conform: the spinach, artichoke and feta phyllo triangle is fantastic, human-portioned and inspired. Whatever hiccups this place dealt with at startup are gone. I fully anticipate Gravy to be a mainstay in this neighborhood for many years to come, it's really good. Like I mentioned, I think it has an uphill battle to fight regarding uppity modern dining expectations, and honestly, I probably won't eat here very often. But when I want to absolutely kill it, Gravy is where I'm stuffing my empty gut.

2.5 actually. I'm going to take this opportunity to come out: I am transitioning to a predominantly vegetarian diet. I'm telling you that to explain why I ordered the eggplant sandwich. I had high hopes. However, the eggplant was sliced so thin and breaded so heavily, deep fried so thoroughly, that it could have been anything at all and tasted exactly the same. I was looking forward to more of a parmesan style - thick cut, earthy flavor, moist. No such luck. It did have melted cheese, an ordinary ciabata roll, some pesto-ish spread, but it was meh. The fries were good. Husband had the cobb salad. The greens were fresh, but they were tossed unevenly in the mustard based vinaigrette (which had unfortunately been over mixed and had emulsified to an unpleasant consistency). There was so much salad piled on the plate that it wasn't possible to mix it in a little better with food going everywhere. As for the space, I really like what they are trying for. The original shape of the diner is preserved, and the booths are clever. There is this feeling though, of the place being ... kinda ... dirty. The entryway is dirty, the windows are dirty, the place just feels unclean. That's all I got. I think this would be great for a late night bite after clubbing, or if I had been driving all day and had just checked into the Hotel Parq Central across the street I'd be grateful as all get out that Gravy is so convenient. But as a destination? As a place my mind jumps to when I think "let's go get a bite!" No, this isn't going to ever be that place for me.

Solid choice for brunch. And dinner too! Don't be fooled: not everything comes smothered in gravy (unless you want it that way)! After reading some of the not-so-great reviews, I was skeptical, but this joint exceeded my expectations. A couple of us went down the road from Presbyterian Hospital for some mid-day grub on a Saturday. The place was packed! We had a couple of things and shared. Our waiter was great despite being pretty busy. My comrades had bacon/eggs/hash browns and said they were a bit greasy, but that's expected (or even hoped for) at diner-esq places like this! Everything I tried was yummy.

Having heard all the hype, I wanted to try Gravy's today. I walked in and I thought they were closed. I was the only one in the place and it was 5 o'clock. The waiter handed me a menu and told me to pick my own table anywhere in the joint. OK... I was expecting breakfast to be served all day, but I was informed that they stop serving breakfast at 3 o'clock. So, I decided on an old standby, chicken fried steak, but the fried green tomatoes with a pork belly topping and tomato jam sounded delish. I got those as an appetizer along with coffee and Mimosa Those fried green tomatoes were outstanding. The tomato jam balanced the saltiness of the bacon and the whole thing was very well balanced. The mimosa added a great tart flavor to the fried green tomatoes nice pairing. The chicken fried steak came with a huge portion of mash potatoes under it along with Brussels sprouts. The gravy over the steak was not salty as some other reviews have mentioned and they were real potatoes, not instant because instant don't have lumps. There were a few, but tasty. The brussel sprouts were absolutely great. They were charred and sauteed in some kind of demi glace. Overall, I liked it. I liked the food and the service was good. I'll be back for breakfast some other time.

Nice place, quiet and comfy. Good service, attentive without being in your face, and so-so food. I had dinner tonight being one of only three tables occupied the entire time I was there. They had a nice selection of beer on tap. The one I wanted on the menu was out, but they had my second choice (a tasty vanilla porter). The waiter was friendly if very brief and I didn't see much of him after my order was placed and food delivered, but he was present and busy the entire time. I had the fried chicken dinner 3 piece fried chicken, braised collared greens, garlic mash with sausage gravy and a biscuit. I also had the mac and cheese as a side. The chicken was the best part of the meal. Perfectly fried, hot and super crispy and still very juicy. It needed a bit of salt but no complaints otherwise. The mash was good and gravy had great flavor, but needed a bit more for the amount of potatoes served. The colored greens were fairly plain, but tasted fine and the biscuit I couldn't do. It was super doughy and incredibly dense. The mac and cheese was really good, but needed something extra to make it stand out. Some salt or green chili or smoke. It tasted good but was pretty standard mac and cheese. Overall I was surprised that the place was empty at dinner time downtown, but was a little underwhelmed with my dinner but would absolutely return for other options on the menu and to enjoy the homey and comfy atmosphere. I'm absolutely interested in their breakfast menu as well.

The fact that they serve breakfast until 3pm is hilarious and a rockin' good time! I mean that is pretty legit but with red velvet pancakes like Gravy serves up, it makes total sense. Caution, you either better have a serious love for red velvet, a humongous appetite, or be sharing with someone because these bad boys are ginormous!! They are fluffy and delicious. Totally melting in your mouth. They come with a nice cream cheese drizzle that just adds to the euphoria. Others in my party had the brisket hash and the egg white omelette....no complaints here, just pure delight. I'm digging the interior...so eclectic, it really works with the place and neighborhood. I'm sad that Milton's is gone but this place is a fine replacement.

I came with not enough time for a sit-down meal. My kids and I ordered and then I had to ask them to serve my son's as soon as it was ready and box the other two meals. This was my fault, not theirs, and they were very accommodating. My son had eggs, a pancake, and bacon. I ordered fried chicken and mashed potatoes and greens, and my daughter ordered a burger. Unfortunately, we didn't check our order before we left the restaurant and it turned out they gave my daughter the seared tuna salad sandwich (??). Weird mistake. I ended up having to switch meals with her. The tuna salad was a little too eclectic for me. Think chicken Waldorf salad but with cubes of rare, cubed ahi and then covered with a layer of melted cheese. I like ahi, but this was... weird. The fried chicken was plentiful and was okay--not phenomenal, but okay. The potatoes and greens were good. Decor--odd. It's like they are trying to be an upscale diner, but it still feels like the place it was before. Maybe they aren't finished updating to the posh retro look? Anyhow... Not sure if I'll go back. Maybe for breakfast.

After all the rave reviews I decided to give this place a shot. Well I wasn't wowed or disappointed. Maybe it's because I missed the breakfast and had dinner. The service here was outstanding both servers that were working were super polite and attentive. The atmosphere is very 70s chic retro modern! I liked the atmosphere and the comfier than most seating. The food here was rite on average in my opinion. I had the pot pie which had a distinctive flavor. The chicken in it was pretty good considering it was fried and crumbled on top of the pie. It was deconstructed pot pie would be the best description. The super negative about it was the biscuit. It was spongy like when you microwave a biscuit that was made in the morning or day before. Oh and the lemonade was I believe country time powder mix, No bueno. I'll be giving this place another shot at breakfast to see if it can live up tho these 5 star reviews I've seen. Fingers crossed for something marvelous.

Gravy and I, we aren't going to have a love affair. My food was good, but it wasn't love. I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese... They let me choose between white or brown gravy which is awesome because I detest being told which gravy I can have- I like brown gravy on my CFS. This was obviously a portion for a mountain man, because I wasn't even able to put away half of it. The CFS was good- crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. The folks have real mashed potatoes, which were good as well. The mac & cheese was creamy and cheesy, and definitely hit the spot. Now we get to the reason why there will be no Gravy and Ashley love affair. The gravy. Brown gravy is supposed to have it's own flavor profile. You shouldn't be able to see through it, and it's not supposed to resemble water. It wasn't gross, it just wasn't GOOD gravy- as you would expect tonget at a place called Gravy for pete's sake. Our server was an awesome guy, he checked on us often and kept us happy. My drink never emptied, and we didn't have to wait a year for the check. We will be back to give this place another shot because I think they can do better... Our server said breakfast is delicious, and I want to give it a go. I'll update my review then. Until then, Gravy is solid but it won't knock your socks off.

My family really enjoys eating at Gravy for breakfast. I usually go with the brisket hash with Christmas and one red velvet pancake on the side. The red sauce has gotten better and better each time I go, however I still feel they need to work on the green chile. My last two visits found it fairly greasy. Always great service and great music playing on their radio. This is one of my favorite places in Albuquerque.

Sat down and visited here for the first time this morning, just finished the Eggs Benedict and a side biscuit and gravy.. Let me tell you, it was fantastic. My buddy got the brisket hash and he enjoyed it thoroughly. The hash brown here are to die for! Will definitely be coming back again and again. Ambiance is pretty cool, old school vibe mixed with modern contemporary touches in decor, a really cool spot.. Oh and did I mention they have like 15 - 20 beers on tap! Hello new favorite!

Comfort food with a twist. I tried the fried green tomato appetizer (a classic hipster / Southern home-cooking hybrid), the chicken fried steak with delicious white gravy, and the "chicken pot pie." This last dish consisted of a piping hot, delicious bowl of chicken pie fixings (gravy and vegetables), with big chunks of crispy fried chicken, topped with buttery biscuits. This is chicken pot pie taken to the next level through the addition of two comfort foods everyone loves: fried chicken and biscuits. Genius. The food was very good. Not transcendent, but very good. My one small gripe was that the biscuits could have been more buttery and less crumbly. The interior has a cool retro theme with large windows and natural lighting. The small booths look like they haven't been modified since mid-century. Accordingly, they look like they can comfortably accommodate four people with mid-century proportions. Since we had a large party (two couples and two babies), we were seated at one of the tables at the end of the restaurant. The sun was going down, and since there were no shades on the huge windows, the sun was beating down on our necks. The guys, who were facing the window, had to wear sunglasses. If Gravy could figure this out (i.e. add shades or blinds), the experience would have been better. This isn't my favorite restaurant in Albuquerque, but it does have a great concept, and definitely deserves more than the 3 star rating it currently has.

I'm from the South, so any restaurant that's based on our favorite fixin' is goin to call my name out loud. Breakfast on a Saturday seemed like the perfect time to try Gravy. I was inspired enough by the description of the house specialty pancake flight to try it, despite the call of breakfast pot pie with biscuits and gravy which was sorely tempting. I was shocked to love this ginormous plate of delicious and delicate pancakes. Score one for me. Hubby, who ordered the biscuits and gravy, did not fare so well. I have honestly never had such bland and utterly unremarkable biscuits... or gravy. And 3 flecks of sausage does not a sausage gravy make. The nouveau diner redo is somewhat charming though not super comfortable. The service was meh, though the boys certainly are nice to look at. I rarely tip less than 20% but this time I did. A little communication, like "I'll take your order once your (specialty) coffee comes up" is much better customer service than being denied eye contact for a solid 8 minutes while my waiter does everything possible to help anyone but me to answer my menu questions. Update: 5-15-15 Went back today and the breakfast pot pie was good enough to earn an extra star. The service was still meh but the gent who provided it was good. He was just working solo so it took a while. ;)

I rarely write poor reviews. This was a horrible experience. Poor service..., we watched food set out and cool while server did other tasks.....pancake flight was cold... Biscuits n gravy... Biscuits were not done. Make less portions of biscuits and bake thoroughly. Gravy was tasteless.... Used too much flour. Even adding salt and pepper did not help! Had to get up out of the booth to ask for more coffee. Coffee was good! Server gave discount on cold pancakes. Hope this was a bad day since it was a Saturday!

Ate at Gravy earlier this week with a group of coworkers. I was determined to eat healthy after gorging myself over Easter weekend. Which was REALLY HARD. I literally had to completely ignore most of the menu and focus on the salads. I was doing pretty well until someone mentioned pineapple upside down pancakes. OMG. And then I heard mention of a Nutella milkshake. OMFG. Why must I have such a sweet-tooth?! Luckily, my strong will prevailed and I ended up with the lobster, shrimp and avocado salad. I'm actually really glad I did, because it was downright delicious. I'm always wary of ordering seafood in the desert (especially Lobster) but this stuff was cooked to a T. The salad was served louie-style with the seafood mixed in a creamy dressing and served on top of greens with a fan of perfectly ripe avocado on the top. I left feeling very happy with my meal and not at all guilty about eating it! As for the decor, this place is one-of-a-kind. While you can see from the outside that this place is housed in a traditional old diner, you cannot see the unique decor! We kept commenting that this place seemed like it was out of the movies - like Pulp Fiction with a twist. You can tell that all of the booth seating is custom made with a bit of retro/industrial/modern/bowling alley(?) flair. The ceiling has very cool cut-out wood paneling and the lighting fixtures are just as cool. Anyway, I can't wait to go back again when I can explore the guilty pleasures!

I went back to Gravy in February, to try their lunch menu. The place was dead and it still took longer than normal to get anyone to acknowledge us/take our order/even be friendly. Do the staff really think they're just that amazing that they can't be bothered to smile or welcome you to the restaurant? My companions ordered the mac n cheese balls to start. Kraft mac n cheese deep fried. How exciting. Not terrible, but not great. The marinara they're served with was not good at all, either. I ordered a salad for my meal...when it came in I couldn't even eat it. It was DRENCHED in dressing. As in, the dressing was pooling at the bottom of the plate. It made the salad inedible. Everyone else loved what they got--maybe I need to start ordering other things? I could, but I don't think I'll actually be back to do so any time soon.

Great food but service could use some work. Had to ask for silverware. Finally received cream when coffee was already cool and asking multiple times. Basically just a calamity of avoidable mistakes on a Sunday morning when the place was not full. Would advise the owner make his employees read a couple chapters from waiting for dummies....oh but did I say that the food is super yum? It is.

I ordered the fried chicken. I got three large, burnt pieces of breading thickly coating some scrawny bones. Did someone already eat all of the meat? The mashed potatoes were luke warm and the gravy tasted like it came out of an envelope. The service was slow and snarky. Sort of the same hipster a-holes from Holy Cow. This place needs to pull it together.

The food was alright, but this place was filthy. They let you seat yourself (which was one of the few things I like about this place) and I chose a table in the back hoping for a quiet breakfast with my wife. I took a picture of my viewpoint and uploaded it. If you want to find this picture and view it, this may help explain some of my issues I had with the cleanliness of this restaurant. THE BAD: *The table I sat at was not wiped, but it was set up for people to sit. This could be my fault for sitting at a dirty table, but the server never stopped me or said "hold on let me clean that table real quick." *The menus are stock paper and are not laminated. This makes them very absorbent. My menu had a barrage of coffee, gravy, syrup, and god knows what other stains all over it. This was two "ewws" for me within 30 seconds. *The first mug of coffee I was given had a lipstick print on the rim. I was given a clean mug when I pointed this out to the server, but this was now strike three and I hadn't even ordered yet. *From the table I sat at (seriously, go find the photo!) I got to watch the servers grab lemon wedges with their fingers and stick them on the rims of customer's glassware. *From this same vantage point, I also got to watch them ignore the ice scoop and instead just stick glassware straight into the ice. This lets the servers possibly touch the ice as both the glass and their hand both into the ice station, and it also allows them to get broken glass in the ice (if they knock the side of the station and break a glass). Servers are supposed to use a plastic ice scoop with a built-in handle for these two reasons. *The third thing I got to see from my table was two cartons of creamer sticking out of the ice they use in patrons' drinks. If this does not bother you, imagine me picking up a dirty fork from the floor and placing that in the dirty dishes area, then picture me pulling a bottle out of the fridge and getting my hands all over it as I open it and use it, then picture me placing that bottle in a bucket of ice, and now imagine me giving you ice out of that bucket to chew on. Yeah, gross. THE GOOD: *I do like the decor. This place has a fun not-quite-retro thing going for it. *The music was good. *I like that you seat yourself, even if I ended up at a dirty table. THE CONCLUSION In case you missed it, I am giving this place one star. I'm not going back to Gravy. I had high hopes for this place and was extremely disappointed.

I went here after hearing so much hype about this place, and I have to say I was just not that impressed. I really expected to be more wow'd by their food, instead I found a very limited menu with very basic food and higher than worth it prices. I got the salmon, which was pretty good, but again nothing out of this world. We also ordered the pork belly appetizer, which was tasty and a great concept, but again nothing that special. The service was pretty lousy that night and the lighting in the place was just odd and too dark. Also, I love the concept of the tables and chairs, but as a girl there was no where to set a purse or hang a jacket, so this was kind of annoying to me. All in all the experience was just really mediocre and didn't really impress me at all.

I don't think I'll be returning to Gravy. Service was SUPER slow. Chicken pot pie completely lacked herbs and was sweet...which was gross. My eggplant sandwich was super greasy. One person in our party was decently happy with his meal--the brisket and eggs...but 1 in 5 satisfied are not good odds. No thanks!

Gravy, I like this place. That might be one of the issues with Gravy, though. I like it, but I wasn't wow'ed, I didn't want to cry tears of joy while I shoved my chicken fried steak into my face. It did not make me feel like my grandma was feeding me after I had fallen, or a typical faturday breakfast I would make myself. I did like the meat quality of Gravy. I even enjoyed the meat loaf, which is unheard of, because I only see meat loaf as a disgusting, greasy, underflavored, cake of meat. Gravy's was good, tender, held it's shape, and had great flavor. The chicken fried steak was obviously not from frozen, real pounded out steak, crispy on the outside, nice on the inside. The potatoes were good, the brussels had nice flavor, but were slightly undercooked. Basically, I have one main issue with Gravy, and that is their gravy. The brown gravy is incredibly salty, like way way way too salty. The white gravy, although it has nice texture, does not taste of sausage gravy. I love sausage gravy, I make it at least twice a month and put it on every bread-piece I can find, and honestly, I would rather smuggle my own gravy in than eat Gravy's gravy... Which is weird, considering the restaurant should be capable of making some crazy-off-the-chains-what-happened-in-my-mouth gravy, but they're not, and that is something that is honestly going to destroy this restaurant. (Seriously, do you guys want me to show you how to make some sausage gravy, because I will.) The one thing that did WOW me about gravy was their milkshakes. They have a fried bananas one and an apple pie one. I went with fried banana, and holy-effin-bajesus. I loved it. That milkshake alone was more comforting than my pile of salty sad gravy. You should try this place though. It's good, it's not wow, it's salty, but it's good. One can only hope the kitchen staff figures out how to make a staple of food that we don't serve a whole lot of in New Mexico.

Surprisingly wonderful! Our group of 5 friends had heard about this place and decided to get together and give it a try tonight for dinner. Here's what we experienced... Service - Top notch! We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door and had water in the table within minutes. The decor was that of a diner you'd see in an old photo with a modern twist. The staff was very attentive and friendly and smiled as several members of our party asked for omissions and substitutions in their entrees - everything was perfectly prepared! Food - we had two appetizers; mac & cheese balls and fried green tomatoes... the table agreed that both were very good, particularly the tomatoes! We had 3 entrees; 2 Chicken Fried Steaks, 2 Steak Frites and a Stroganoff. Everyone tried everyone's dish and from the steak to the mac n' cheese to the fries and the noodles - it was unanimous, we were all very impressed. We will definitely be coming back to try more, bring more friends and recommend to more people. See my few photos...

I was hoping the negative reviews were wrong. They weren't! I had chicken fried steak and my partner had spinach artichoke phyllo triangle. The chicken fried steak was just wrong! It wasn't tenderized at all. The coating was also just wrong! It looked a lot like they deep fried in a fryer! Plus, there was way more coating than steak, how can that even happen?! The cfs at The Range is WAY better. The spinach dish was way lacking in content compared to my gigantic filled plate. For the big price, the spinach dish was not filling. I don't think I'll eat there again.

Nice looking diner on Central not far off the interstate, with a big parking lot in the rear. Stylish elements inside the building give it a modern feel with retro touches to tie everything together. You wouldn't know it from the street, though, as the exterior facade and glass look a bit rough - though this means it blends into the neighborhood well. Don't leave your car unlocked while eating breakfast... The menu is equally modern, with staples like pancakes getting gourmet twists - pineapple upside down pancakes, for instance, and brioche french toast. I was only interested in breakfast and didn't spend much time on the rest of the menu but at a glance it fit the bill of the theme here; classics with moderate twists to take it past boring old greasy spoon grub. I settled on the 'stuffed' french toast, two slices of the brioche french toast with a cream cheese and strawberry mix. I got my plate (from the super cheery and attentive server) and found what looked like maybe two strawberry mashed together with a cold lump of plain cream cheese - and not very thoroughly. Topped with a rock-hard dab of butter that was difficult to mash when pressed between a fork and the plate, I was less than impressed. The concept had promise but the execution ignored the little details that made the extra work worth the effort. My coffee mug was enormous - and was refilled promptly - which is something I wish more place would take to heart. I hate having a waitress hover over me, constantly throwing off my carefully cultivated sugar-creamer-coffee ratio. I mean, I like it when they're there, making sure I'm good, but the constant coffee patrols gotta go. BIG MUGS FOR EVERYONE! I've had worse food, to be sure, but I think the cook staff might not have their heart in it - something you can get away with at a crappy diner but not in a place like this. I overheard the manager and some wait staff discussing menu items and the feeling is one of great intent so I'll try to stop back if I'm in town long, but I'll be ordering something else. My first visit wasn't disastrous by any stretch, I'd give them 3.5...

After the stellar review in the Alibi, I just had to try this place out. The gravy is just tangy enough, just spicy enough, and if Goldilocks were eating this, she'd find it just right. I had the omelette because I was wracked with indecision over the selection of dishes; everything sounds so good that I'm going to have to become a repeat customer to try em all. I was sad to see their breakfast burrito and huevos have pico on them, but I'm sure I can get that on the side.

Gravy is delicious, but your mind won't be blown. Ultra hip with brand new retro furnishings and good soundtrack, wait staff is friendly and attentive. Breakfast was the pancake trio with coffee and mimosa. Pancakes were good, red velvet was the best. Cinnamon swirl was disappointing. Juice was fresh squeezed and mostly pulp. Dinner was chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and sprouts with the sausage gravy. Generous portions and super yummy. The whole menu looked comforting and delicious, and there were several dishes that caught my eye. It's worth a visit!

The food at this place is so plain and boring. I think they're riding a trendy wave of biscuits, putting bacon on everything, etc. and haven't really thought out making good food with flavor. I've been several times, months apart, and am always sad afterwards that I spent money on something I could have made tastier at home. Why aren't things that come with gravy smothered in gravy at a place called gravy? And why not get a little inspired and make a green chile/red chile gravy? They're doing the bare minimum here. Egg was ordered over easy and came out hard. This is basics, people. Come on. Service is pretty shoddy and the windows sills and windows are dirty! Not going back.

Garlic Shrimp appetizer was heavenly, and the Fried Chicken taco plate is an interesting take on barbecue, very filling. My favorite thing is the 1960's retro deco, very Rat Pack. Overall a great addition to the neighborhood.

Went to Gravy on its soft opening last week and fell in love! We loved the vibe and the super friendly service! We got the Pork Belly & Mac n Cheese bites for the appetizers, the Pork Belly was seriously one of the tastiest things I've ever had (the mac n cheese bites were pretty good too). In our group, for entrees we had Chicken Pot Pie, Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Chicken and a Cobb Salad. All were delicious! Very perfect for my boyfriend who is mainly a meat and potatoes dude with a unique twist for me! We'll be back! Actually, we may be placing an order now!

I love the ambiance and the fact that they have great local brews on tap. The food however lacks flavor. For a place called Gravy the gravy is their weakest point! To become a staple breakfast restaurant they need to take a look at their recipes and dare to add more flavor. All the ingredients are there we just need more "cowbell"!!!

Would not come back. Place smells like drains are dirty. Glasses were actually dirty, beer is expensive, and food is soso. We will not return. Employees were nice. Floors are in serious need of being moped!

Easily loses 2 stars because of the lack of friendly staff. Not one friendly greeting, or smile after I attempted to smile and ask how they were doing. This was with the initial greeting to be seated and the waitress. And that's all part of an experience when you go out to dine. You want to feel welcome there, am I right? Food was served fast and she was there for a coffee refill, so no complaints on timing. 3 stars because the food was good. We had Huevos Rancheros (wife liked it), The Breakfast Sandwich (really good) and the Red Velvet pancake (not good at all. Don't get it). Coffee was good. Orange juice was fresh squeezed and delicious. Overall, worth a try because of the quality food. Interesting style and atmosphere too. A bit loud in there. Peak time on Sunday afternoon.

We came for lunch tome on a sunday. The atmosphere is nice, the fried green tomato appetizer was great, and the server seemed overextended but she still managed to serve us pretty efficiently. We definitely want to come back to try more items on their menu.

Based upon 5 visits. I'd really like them to succeed but the kitchen needs a lot of work and some of the waitstaff could use it too. Served the wrong beer on two occasions (sucked it up once and sent it back the second time and the waitress was obviously displeased and unapologetic). Wrong chile on the breakfast burrito (!!!). Stale pita bread with the salad. Undercooked burger, like rare instead of medium. Super fatty brisket. Cold-ish food a couple of times. Food is okay but not worth the price or the gamble. I'm not giving up hope but it'll be a while until my next visit.

One of the worst dining experiences I have had. My companion and I were nearly the only customers in the place. The waitress took forever to take our order, bring our coffee and didn't even put in our order for quite some time. Meanwhile the manager was sitting talking to another customer about happy hour. When the food arrived the biscuits were leaden and the gravy tasteless. My companion ate about 3 bites and gave up. I had the egg white omelette and it was bland. I ordered whole wheat toast but was served white toast and the cream for my coffee was curdled. Needless to say, we'll never go back and I've told everyone I know who was interested in trying this place not to waste their time.

This place was an okay price range but their food was disgusting. I had the cinnamon roll pancake and it was gross, hated it, tastes far better at ihop

  • Christopher O.

The food is fine if not overpriced but the reason for the 3 stars is the subpar customer service. The three times I've been here I've waited longer than I should for someone to take my drink order, my order, refills and getting my check. And don't bother trying to place a pickup order. Was just left on hold. Good thing there's The Standard just down the street.

Decided to stop in and try this new breakfast/lunch spot and old landmark in the "Q" previously Milton's was really excited to experience some great new breakfast, however I was a bit disappointed as the food was okay, nothing out of the ball bark at all. I ordered scrambled eggs/hashbrowns and their green chile sausage the food didn't make me feel like I would come back for more. Sad as this is definitely a very cool retro feel of a breakfast spot, kind of reminds me of an old Mel's Diner but I don't think Mel at "Gravy" really has his culinary skills going on over here, but if your a "Denny's or I-Hop kind of a person this is your spot! Cheers

Another example of New Mexico's brilliance in mediocrity. After two plus years of waiting, this is what you deliver? Let us begin with the horrendous design, which appears to have been construed by the joint effort of Ray Charles (posthumously) and Crackhead Bob, a wonderful blend of postmodernism and noveau kitsch, to the menu which looks like it might have been envisioned by Bob Guccione while he pleasured himself during a 70's porn convention, to perhaps the actual food itself, which tasted like Alpo mixed with horseradish. On the plus side, I think I saw Frankenstein working the kitchen, so I can cross that off my bucket list.

Seeking a hearty breakfast on a Sunday afternoon, we decided to check out Gravy. I couldn't resist the biscuits and gravy, a rare guilty pleasure. The sausage gravy was tasty though a little light on sausage. Biscuits were perfectly fluffy and huge. Partner had the brisket hash with red chile & eggs. The meat & eggs were perfectly cooked, with potatoes, peppers, onions on a bed of red chile. The chile is straight up NM red with no doctoring up, which I love tho my partner would've liked it spicier. I had coffee - good roast. He had a mimosa he liked but I didn't. By the way if you're used to the $5 mimosas at Slate in the champagne glass (like, what 5 oz?) this is a $6 mimosa in a pint glass (16 oz!) The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed but I didn't like the taste of the champagne they used. Decor is cute retro diner. Love the lamps! The soundtrack was not oldies (thank God) but hip electronic music we both really enjoyed. Overall high quality ingredients, well prepared. Good service, perfect location. Will definitely visit again to try out more of the menu.

I'm joining the ranks of those who are baffled by the reviews on here. I used to live in the SF Bay Area and have been in ABQ for almost a decade. There are a few breakfast places I like in town (the Grove, mainly), but I've found ABQ to be really missing the kind of place where breakfast is interesting and exciting. Honestly, this is my new favorite breakfast place in town. Really fun menu. Delicious food (my friend and I split the breakfast sandwich and the pancake trio). Nice service. I do recognize that they are new and still ironing out the kinks, but all in all, I had a really excellent time and am already wanting to go back! (the one point off is for the no gluten-free option. My wife can't eat the wheat and also doesn't eat cheese or meat, so I can't return with her. But as for me? Pretty dang happy.)

I went back to Gravy. Very uninspired. Fried chicken was good the first time I went (see earlier review) but this time it was terrible with very thick crust. Uninspired menu, slow service. That's it. Won't go back again.

Really swank new place. Very cool decor, almost an overload of textures and colors, but really fun. Love the interior & all of the details to it. Service was very nice, attentive. They were out of the beer I ordered, but the manager hooked me up on my second choice. Totally unnecessary, and totally appreciated. The beer selection is rather huge--taps for miles--but not as diverse in styles as one might expect. Still, impressive for a little joint like this. And a good number of local taps mixed in, to boot. Really enjoyed the food. We were there for dinner, and vegetarians be aware: not a huge selection of things for us to eat. BUT, the phyllo spinach & artichoke dish was pretty dang good. We had the mac & cheese balls for apps, and while we loved the concept, and the presentation was frankly delightful, the balls themselves were a little under-seasoned. The tomato puree was delicious, but the balls themselves weren't quite there. We will absolutely order them again, but I might dash them with a touch of salt if necessary. My husband had the pork chop, and it was great. He love the chop, and we both were VERY pleased with the mustard sauce. The asian-style rotkhol was a bit OVER seasoned, maybe a touch over on the sesame, so I pecked at it (I liked it more than he did) and he left most of it on his plate. For dessert we shared the fried banana milkshake. Fantastic. We both

We went to Gravy this morning for brunch. There was no wait, which was a little surprising for a Sunday around 11:15. We ordered brunch food- I got the huevos rancheros, which is one of my favorite breakfast dishes. I often order it to determine whether I think a restaurant is a breakfast worthy joint)- whether I like their huevos or not. My favorite huevos in town have been at the Range and at Hurricane's (the latter being cheaper and with a flour tortilla instead of corn). I have to say, I loved the huevos at Gravy! They were super yummy! My partner got the biscuits and gravy and said they were pretty standard, that maybe there could be a bit more flavor, but that he liked them and he liked the place and would return. I liked the vibe of the restaurant, the server was friendly as was the person who greeted us. The food took a long time to come out though and we saw other people getting their food so we asked what was going on. The server, who was really nice, said she had gotten the tickets out of order and that had slowed things down so she comped us one mimosa and a coffee- which was nice- and our food came soon after. The slowness wouldn't keep me from going back to this place- I liked the food and the windows were fun to look out. Overall, it was a good experience. I'm giving them four stars only because we waited longer than we should have.

Had breakfast there with a friend. Service was excellent, coffee was decent for a diner (I'm a snob), and both our meals were good. I had the Belgian waffle, he had bacon & eggs. Nothing fancy, but well executed and presented. Will be back.

Service needs work, food is doing the right things but not in any way excitedly. Been there twice, once for brunch, and once for dinner. First off they need a sign, that is either please seat yourself, or wait to be seated, because they dont people stand around it was close to 10 minutes for me, (what kept me waiting was one of the bussers popped his head up in the first few minutes saying they will seat me shortly. eventually someone else wanted to sit me at a 4 person table (there alone) when there was a nice 2 person table i could take and leave the 4 person open, they agreed with my logic... (seating was not only my issue, i watched 2 people come in, wait... and wait... and leave without being greeted. Same thing the second time, but it was probably closer to 5 or 6 minutes before we were told to sit at a table, (it had no been bussed, so we sat there uncomfortably looking at the napkins and bill and plates. First time the order took a good 30 min or so for a breakfast burrito. and when it came it was sausage not bacon like i asked for, and drizzled with a sour cream sauce and just kinda patted with a few chunks of bland green chile. (more californian style than NM). I was ok with the order error (and at the slowness i was not going to send it back and wait another 30min) , but the blandness off the chile and the drenching in a thin runny ranch like sour cream sauce, left it less than awesome. on the 2nd visit, i got a great looking porkchop, (the asian porkchop) it was good, potatoes were pretty good, the mustard sauce was very weak, and the cabbage only had a hint of flavor other than limp cabbage. My waiter didn't even bring a steak knife, but a busboy noticed me using the butterknife and brought me one. My dad got the Beef Stroganoff, the beef was pretty good, had all the right parts, egg noodles. beef mushrooms sauce. but the sauce was band, it was more like a jar of alfredo, than the zingy sourcreamy sauce one expects on a good stroganoff. I think my dad summed it up well, the service needs work, and the spicing in the kitchen, is only whispering, its good but it needs the spice levels to be turned up from a 2 to a 7!

The food was excellent, no complaints what so ever. The service was horrible. You don't take an order, drop off the the food and not check on your table other than to drop off the check after being asked to by another waitstaff. If not for the quality of the food and price you pay, very reasonable by the way, I would not go there again. But like my wife pointed out, better the food be good then the service.

First stumbled in here on their opening day. They had some issues to iron out but the food and service were great so we decided to give them some time and try again. This time around everything was spot on. Our server was very attentive and the food was great. We split the fried chicken dish along with an extra side of mac and cheese and we didn't have a single complaint about anything. We will be back!
