This is good French food if you are in the neighborhood. However, it is not my favorite French place. The main courses were tasty. As for the desserts, I wasn't too impressed. I liked that the chef got out of the kitchen and went around asking the customers how they were doing. The atmosphere of the restaurant can be very private and romantic. Some nights they have a piano player and wine tastings. They also serve lunch for $10. The only think that wasn't that good was the service. The waitress was friendly, but kind of forgetful.

Chez Axel is a small French restaurant where one can find a good scallops or Boeuf a l'orange dish, & a good salad & wine.

This is the type of restaurant you come to to sit down, put away your phone, and enjoy amazing food with good company. Don't expect to be in and out in an hour (at least, for dinner) but instead sit back and enjoy the ride. The food is top. I have never had a bad meal here. I recommend the sole or the filet. And the service? Fantastic! Dawn is hysterical. Live music to top it off? It doesn't get much more romantic than this folks!

There's always a decent amount of expectation when a plate passes the $16 (roughly) threshold....more so when it does that in Abq. Chez Axel does surpass that bar (barely) but also meets the bar, so to speak, quite well. Located in a very unassuming corner mall at San Pedro/Monty, you sorta do have to look for it. Inside however, it's a little gem of this drive-by neighborhood. Super quaint inside, immaculately clean, with a nice uncluttered seating arrangement. We were greeted and seated (sorry, dr Seuss I'm not) immediately and enjoyed attentive service throughout. Lucky for us, they have a piano player thur-sat, so that was a nice ambiance builder. Apparently they even have a jazz trio/duo on tue or wed (call to confirm, as my memory fades quickly ;) We started out with what could have arguably been the highlight of the meal, the onion soup. One word. Wow. A hearty portion considering the price, and even more so considering the taste. Suffice to say it was fought over..... Our entree choices were the Fillet Grilee (a beef tenderloin) which was advertised at 8oz, but couldn't have been much less than 12. The brandy peppercorn sauce accompanying was very important as the steak itself lacked significant flavor, unfortunately. Despite the lack of cooked in flavor, it was easy to slice & chew, and came with little fat, thankfully. The standalone taste of the steak was the single reason for rating at 4.5 stars instead of a full 5. We also ordered the Tilapia which was very well enjoyed by my date. Vegetables were all rather tasty, as we received potatoes, squash, & baby carrots between the two of us. Bill was reasonable if compared to a place such as Vernon's, around $50 for two, sans drinks or dessert. All in all a spot I'd likely enjoy again. One last note on the bill, remember a visa/mc or cash if you like to use amex, as they are smart enough not to take amex ;)

This was my first visit to Chez Axel and I'm unsure whether I will go back. With that said, it has an excellent atmosphere. Very romantic and nicely decorated. The service is decent. The food...hmmm. My boyfriend can, and does, actually cook French food much better than this. I had the filet and it was cooked nicely but it was not seasoned. The carrots were fabulous with a touch of nutmeg. The potatoes were meh. I also ordered the dessert of bananas flambé but they were not flambéed table side nor did it taste like they were flambéed at all. Little things would have made it better, like toasting the almonds, using unsalted butter (it was very salty for a dessert). I have been to France and quite honestly I've eaten street food better than this. And as mentioned before, my love cooks much better than this at our house on a weekly basis. I hope the owner either teaches the chef a thing or two or hires someone who has more attention to important details as simple as seasoning all of his food. Presentation should also be much better for a French restaurant.

If you're looking for French + romantic atmosphere, this is the place to go! The staff is very friendly and helpful. Dinner is pricey, but the food is true to French cooking and all very delicious. If you've never had frog legs, this is a good place to try them! And, yes, you must get a glass of wine with your meal. On certain nights they have a piano player in the dining area which makes dinner that much more special.

Chez Axel is an awesome little French restaurant! Very reasonably priced for lunch you can easily get a great meal under $7 and the food is fantastic. Do be aware that it is a French sit down restaurant and not fast food, so block off a little time to sit and enjoy the atmosphere or call ahead for takeout. Dinner is more expensive, expect to pay around $20 a plate, but it is definitely worth it for the romantic atmosphere, friendly staff, and real food.

Wow! What a hidden treasure. Nestled in a little strip mall, it is some of the best French food I have had in years. The staff was nice, a little uneasy with their French.... but the charming location and wonderful food makes up for it. Started with the frogs legs... delicious!!! For an entree we had the fillet and tarragon chicken. For dessert we had the creme de caramel. Everything was absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to come back again.

Food great food deserves a 4.5. The service was a bit lacking there were only 3 other tables and it took the waitress 40ish minutes to check on us and for the check. Perhaps my fiance and I don't look like we have money. But ill be back again, always give a place 3 chances to impress I always say.

I'm extremely hard on restaurants in Albuquerque. But I do have to say, the service, attentiveness, price point and food quality here are simply OUT OF THIS WORLD! It's nice to be able to relax and enjoy your food and wine. The food is privy but worth every penny. No screaming kids, no booming stereo of franchise music. Just good food, great service, in a small, intimate setting. Simply but: It's the finest Restaurant in Albuquerque! **RESERVATIONS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED**

You'd never know it by it's locale, but when you step inside, it's a cute, romantic French restaurant. I've been coming here for about 10 years and the food is consistently good. Make sure to get the French Onion Soup. It's the best. Really. Great service, too.

One of the worst places in town. Frog legs taste like cricket legs. Chicken was like a mushy mess. This place needs to surrender as any other self loathing frenchman should.

By far one of the best restaurants in Albuquerque. What the menu lacks in size, chef Stephen more than makes up with great quality ingredients and a wonderful touch. Stand-out dishes include Beef Bourguignon a l'orange, Cassoulet as well as the Trout Amandine. Be sure to try the Snails a l'Aixoise-great texture which is that of smoked oysters and a wonderful buttery flavor with herbal accents. Overall, you can't go wrong with any dish here.
