BLACK MESA is ominous sounding, isn't it? Well, it's the name of a couple of geological areas of our country: * Black Mesa, OK is the highest point in the Oklahoma panhandle, at 4,973'. * Black Mesa, AZ is a major feature of the Colorado Plateau in NE Arizona with an elevation of 8,000' Black Mesa is also a fictional research facility location in the game of "Half-Life." But even though the panhandle can be a blast (literally) in winter; and the plateau has incredible archeological sites; and who doesn't like fictional games to take the sting out of everyday life, I am voting for the simple pleasures of my favorite BLACK MESA . . . . A small coffee company located at the Albuquerque Sunport. They are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 5AM to 9PM every single day. THE COFFEE IS GREAT! They also have gourmet sandwiches and pastries. Most importantly, they are always there for me as I pass through this airport when I need a good strong cup of COFFEE!! The thing I like the best about this little company is that they support CoffeeKids ( coffeekids.org ) - - an organization that helps children in coffee producing countries. Go to the CoffeeKids website, you will be impressed. You will want this little coffee company to open up branches in San Francisco, Denver, Houston, New York, Atlanta & Miami. Why keep such a good cup of coffee limited to one state? Think of all the kids they could help if they sold more coffee?

Tasty green chile stew and stuffed turkey breadstick (sandwich with green chile inside the bread). Not cheap but not crazy for airport food at $11 for a sandwich with a choice of side: mini-cup of green chile stew, fruit, or carrots. Pastries and coffee look good too. It's all the way at the end of A gates. Just saved you from looking through the confusing map on the interactive digital airport directory. :P

I travel through here often and Black Mesa Cafe had fantastic green chile soup, healthy sandwich options and a super friendly staff. I see the same few faces very time I come through and they are consistently pleasant and all about customer service. Definitely the best coffee/ food stop in the airport past security!

Who said you can't get good food at the airport? Layover in Albuquerque warrants an amazing green chile soup. Don't waste your time walking around the terminal. This is the only good thing you will find.

I've had a lot of coffee from a lot of different places and I truthfully can say that this was the best. The guy took the time to customize each drink to what my mom and I wanted. Couldn't have asked for a nicer guy!! I wish I got his name and left more of a tip

We had to kill two hours at this place. The beer was cold and the nachos were good but very strange. The service was alright but the pricing was out of control. However, when you have two kill time at an airport I guess it really doesn't matter.

Paid $9 for a burrito that they heated up in the microwave! It wasn't bad, but that's a rip-off!

I like the name. It reminds me of a 90's-era super hero. In fact, I might start fighting crime as Black Mesa. Wait. I just gave away my secret identity. Forget you read that. As for my powers? Well, that's an easy one. Here's the origin story: Mild-mannered Johnny T entered into an airport restaurant in search of nourishment before a 3-hr flight back to the Midwest. Determined not to have any more green chiles (seriously, green chiles + empty stomach + 3-hr flight is never a good idea. For anyone. Unless you're a super villain.), he searched for something to pique his interest. There he found the elusive GOLD MACHINE from Naked Juice. GOLD MACHINE!! Not Blue. Not Green. GOLD!!! omgomgomg. This is a juice-a-holic's dream come true. a NEW (for me) flavor of naked Juice? Golden Kiwi (what does such a thing taste like), banana, apple, pineapple, and passion fruit? Together? I.can' t.take.it !!! Wait. Where was I? Oh yeah. Origin and powers. Ahem. Upon discovering and drinking this long-forgotten juice, mild-mannered Johnny T transforms into Black Mesa with the power to... respond to emails after being away on vacation in record time... ? Unexciting? Okay. I'll work on that. But, I'll need a few more Gold Machines to do so. Seriously. GOLD Machine. What? Love.

Out of all the airport restaurants I've been to, I gotta say that I liked Black Mesa Coffee Company. I was on my way home and had 4 hours to kill before my flight. I walked up and down the aisle and nothing peeked my interest except hidden at the end of the aisle, I saw Black Mesa Coffee Co. I looked on Yelp and it had pretty good ratings and everyone loved their Turkey breadstick and Green Chile Chicken soup and so of course I had to give it a try. So I ordered the following: Turkey Breadstick with a mini Green Chile Chicken soup ($11): It was good. It was actually a good size turkey sandwich and green chile was baked into the bread Green Chile, Apple and Cheese Danish ($3.40): I had to try it, it was pretty good. It would have been better if it was warmed up. Small Iced Coffee ($3.00): It was good, strong and not bitter. Don't know when I'll be in NM again but if I have time to kill at an airport, I'll go here again.

Been stopping at Black Mesa Coffee for over 10 years now for that post flight, pre baggage claim and rental car caffeine hit. Very convenient! While I'm not too big on those cloyingly sweet frappe concoctions I was so fond of back in college, this place has been a reliable standby for a decent cup o' Joe. The House Coffee was excellent; just the right balance of acidity. Almond and Soy Milk are available for those with sensitivities to dairy. The lady working that morning (Wednesday, August 5th) was a total sweetheart. You can also get food here - Never had it, but I keep hearing how amazing their Green Chile Chicken Stew is. Check it out for yourself, weary-eyed traveller. ;)

Food is awesome! But...Steve, the guy mopping the floor and working around counter, had a horrible attitude and was rude. Honestly, he probably should be reprimanded or suspended for a few days unless he changes his attitude.

  • Jason K.

For an airport lunch, I was pleasantly surprised by what Black Mesa had to offer. I had the chicken tortilla soup, which was flavorful and served piping hot. Also had a piece of cranberry bread, which was good and moist. Again, nothing spectacular for an airport location, I was impressed.

Black Mesa is outside the security gates so grab your meal/coffee break first before going in. Really good coffee, pastries and good service. This is a fun Albuquerque Coffee place-give it a chance!

    (4)
  • Rand R.

Black Mesa is always a required stop, particularly when catching an early flight. Great coffee and espresso drinks, great meals and pastries, and nice healthy options. Fast, friendly service. Only gripe is this place is really expensive. I know to expect to be gouged for airport food, but geez, $20 for a latte, breakfast sandwich and a fruit cup? Ouch!

    (3)
  • bert s.

Definitely the place when doing southwest at support... I think I'm forming an almost unhealthy emotional attachment to their southwest turkey sandwich and mocha.

  • Brian H.

Seriously the worst coffee I have ever had in my life. Maybe it's because it's masked by the 10 pumps of vanilla syrup that makes my teeth jump out of my mouth for fear that they will rot before I have finished the coffee or this review. Either way I had to water it down before it was even acceptable to choke down.

Big portion, perfect amount of heat, delicious!

  • Zoe D.

Passing by the typical fast food options in the airport as I walked from the Delta gate at the end of B to Black Mesa Coffee at the end of A, I wondered if it was going to be more than just a NM themed coffee shop. Not an extensive menu, but when you find a huge menu at a small place you know it can't be fresh. I opted for the chicken green chili stew to eat now and the ham and green chili to eat later....a couple hours until my flight plus a large water to go with. The stew was delicious, fresh with a heat that lingers for a few minutes and is gone. There were chunks of chicken, potato, tomato and green chilies. The quiche was probably 1/5 of a pie pan, cheesy & dense. I don't eat gluten so skipped the crust, sorry can't tell you how that was. The water was just that...water. The cost for these 2 meals...$16, not out of whack for airport food. The water was a bit pricey over 3 bucks for 24 ounces and that might of rubbed me the wrong way-I could have gotten a gallon of the same purified water at Wal-Mart for a buck. That being said...they had a special if you bought an entrée then you could add a 16 oz bowl of the stew for $3.50 (normally $6), so being a half full kinda gal I just got myself a free bottle of water with the purchase of the two items What a Bargain! I'm flying back through the Sunport next week and will stop by the Black Mesa Coffee Company again, maybe even try their coffee!

    (4)
  • Lyssa D.

I haven't had the food here, so I can't speak to that. But, if your at the airport, you have finally made it through security, and you're jonesing for a cup o'joe, make the walk to Black Mesa. The other coffee is not so nice. Even when I am flying Delta, I walk all the way down to the end of the Southwest area and then walk all the way back to the Delta area, because if I am going to drink the drink, I want it to be worth it.

    (4)
  • Deborah S.

Perfect spot to grab a hot beverage or quick bite when awaiting a connecting flight or simply sipping a latte and surfing the web until boarding begins... replensih your superpowers with a little caffeine at the Black Mesa, it's all good.

    (5)
  • Dolores G.

Sometimes I just need that jolt of caffeine to keep me going on my adventures. While not a big coffee fan I only occasionally find myself stopping in at the location on the "secure" side of the Sunport across from gate A6. They also have a location just at the top of the escalators on the "unsecured" side. I have had some of their baked items and they also offer sandwiches and fresh fruit. A great local chain!

    (4)
  • Marc V.

Had a quick chicken soup here..... Surprisingly fresh and just the right amount of spice. Shocking but quite good! Coffee was very good too. Finally a decent airport bite.

    (4)
  • H D.

This is a coffee place inside the ABQ Sunport airport. I loved their coffee drink. The best mocha I have had in awhile. So smooth, cold and satisfying that I was content for my flight. I also grabbed their signature bottle of water which was fine as expected. The store has mostly coffee but also a selection of grab and go items like sandwiches, drinks, snacks etc. The service was friendly and timely. I would recommend.

    (5)
  • Gail P.

Hoping for a Starbucks at this "Sunport," but had to suffice with Black Mesa instead. Which is okay because their Chocolate Pinion coffee is delicious! And fairly strong too! They also had a very tasty Vanilla Iced Coffee. Since I only had a few minutes, I got the freshly made granola & it was very good, flavorful and crunchy. For $5.90, it also includes your choice of fresh fruit--either apple, orange or banana. Of course, this being New Mexico here, there was green chile up the ying-yang. I was just looking for a quickie healthy choice but you can certainly satisfy your southwestern cravings for spicy at Black Mesa. The service was okay and since the Southwestern gate agent recommended Black Mesa, that is good enough for 4 YELP Stars for me.

    (4)
  • Alyssa G.

Very decently priced for an airport coffee stop. The banana bread is really delicious too!

    (4)
  • Amy N.

The best green chile chicken soup that I had ever had. So much flavor with just the right amount of spice! I had a morning flight and was surprised to find out that they serve soup all day! The breadstick that comes along with it is also rich in flavor! Must try!

    (5)
  • Arielle B.

This is a review of their coffee only. I always get the chocolate pinion coffee. It's black , strong and hot- like all coffee should be. They sell various assortment of sandwiches, soups and deli grab and go type food.

    (4)
  • Scott I.

Had the turkey breadstick with chiles baked in the bread. It was a great sandwich with a little kick. Also had a small green chile stew. It was very good and flavorful. There aren't a lot of food options in the sunport but the food here is great and delicious although it was a little pricey ($11)

    (3)
  • Mark M.

My only comment is that they have the best damn roasted green chili chicken soup I have ever had! How you like them apples? You won't get a more savory, smoky, and tasty meal elsewhere here at this airport.

    (5)
  • David L.

We got the stuffed turkey breadstick and it came with a small side of your choice -- and by small...I mean small. The green chile stew had a smoky and spicy kick to it. The stuffed turkey breadstick was a fresh healthy alternative to some of the other rather limited dining options at the ABQ. Black Mesa does seem like the best place for food by far.

    (4)
  • Rick H.

OK, don't let me tempt you...you decide if Black Mesa Coffee Company is where you want to "pop in" before your flight or immediately after you land... Three Words: Turkey Stuffed Breadsticks. As in a Green Chile breadstick stuffed with turkey, cheddar, onions and tomato. It's a torpedo Club Sandwich...who does that? The awesomeness that is Black Mesa Coffee...oh, sorry did I tempt you? (And you thought Seth was just gonna pour you a Pinion Nut extra large with double vanilla looking over his tip jar, did cha)?

Wasn't this a starbucks?!? Anyhow- had a good apple gallette. Also found something the vegan could eat here. Not bad airport stop.

    (3)
  • Claudia A.

I really liked my breakfast here. I had the egg and bacon biscuit and a cafe latte. Muy bueno!

    (5)
  • Nicole J.

My husband and I ate at the airport location twice on a recent trip. As far as airport options go, this is as good as it gets. They have tons of healthy, fresh options for sandwiches, salads, and snacks. I had a delicious spinach salad and my husband had quinoa with tomatoes and other veggies. The service was good and the prices are reasonable. It's almost worth stopping over at ABQ just to go to this place.

    (5)
  • Ken G.

I don't drink coffee, but it's convenient to have place to stop by for a quick snack, like sandwiches, drinks, fruit and pastries. I had a chocolate brownie, that was pretty good, although a bit on the sweet side. The service is great and the staff is friendly and helpful.

    (3)
  • A G.

While the breakfast croissant was very good, I can't believe I paid $9 for it. The coffee was great and the people are very nice. The inflated price takes one star away.

    (4)
  • Tori L.

the chai tea latte here is the best EVER and the staff is super nice!

    (5)
  • Christine P.

The server was very helpful, friendly and polite. I actually didn't feel like coffee which is crazy! so she recommended an italian soda. She made me a strawberry one with cream and it was GREAT! I thought she went out of her way to find me something different and fun. Will stop there more often when at the airport.

  • Lesa C.

Food was way over priced. Family of four was over $40. Few places to sit. Tables dirty. Food was ok but microwaved. Daughter liked apple Danish, eggs not real and cheese tastes like plastic. Chilli cheese quiche was better than expected and piece is huge.

My husband and I ate at the airport location twice on a recent trip. As far as airport options go, this is as good as it gets. They have tons of healthy, fresh options for sandwiches, salads, and snacks. I had a delicious spinach salad and my husband had quinoa with tomatoes and other veggies. The service was good and the prices are reasonable. It's almost worth stopping over at ABQ just to go to this place.

I don't drink coffee, but it's convenient to have place to stop by for a quick snack, like sandwiches, drinks, fruit and pastries. I had a chocolate brownie, that was pretty good, although a bit on the sweet side. The service is great and the staff is friendly and helpful.

While the breakfast croissant was very good, I can't believe I paid $9 for it. The coffee was great and the people are very nice. The inflated price takes one star away.
