I got the turkey bacon cranberry sandwich, in other words Thanksgiving in June and it was very good. It has a very fun quirky coffeehouse vibe, complete with typewriters. My only complaint was my latte was not very good, will return though.

Went here with coworkers on lunch break. I will probably go again because it is convenient and the staff was very nice. I ordered a sandwich and asked for it in a wrap instead. The woman let me know that they would have to put less of everything so it fits in the wrap. I said that was okay because that makes sense. When I got back to the office and started eating there was WAY TOO MUCH wrap. They definitely had enough room for more meat and other ingredients because the actually wrap took up more of my lunch then what was inside. Even though it was tasty... That was a little annoying!

I wish this place was around when I was going to school at nearby NJIT. Just a short walk from the campus and located right in the heart of Rutgers-Newark, this is a nice little coffee shop that also offers tasty sandwiches and cookies. Walking in, I was a little surprised at how hidden it was. The space as actually quite large but utilized very well. Ordering a Chai latte, and a bagel with smoked salmon I was well pleased. I do wish they had more bagel options, as my first three choices were not available that particular day. Good use of the space and quick service; a nice little local establishment.

I come here for lunch every now and then and usually choose between the black bean avocado wrap or tomato/mozz/pesto sandwich. I like the casual artsy cafe type atmosphere. The service is quick and friendly and also love how they make my coffee.

I was at ArtKitchen for just a short while, but am absolutely sure I'll be back. Give me a coffee shop with food, casual comfortable ambiance, and good coffee and I'm a happy girl. Give me all that plus very reasonable prices, friendly staff, and amazing cookies - tickle me pink and call me thrilled! A coffee shop first and foremost, ArtKitchen offers coffees and teas both hot and cold. Their beverage menu is not as mega-extensive as some other shops, but once you cover basic drip, latte, cappuccino, and chai tea lattes is there really anything else you need? I got a small cappuccino which was perfectly made, and $2.80. The food menu looked very good and reasonably priced... only $5.50 - $7.00 for sandwiches and salads! That may not be a big deal to you, but I truly appreciate not breaking the bank over lunch. The meals I saw on tables all looked delicious, and I will surely be back to try the food. I did indulge in a chocolate chunk cookie (fitness be darned, we all need a 2PM coffee and cookie break once in awhile!) which the register guy said was the best of their cookie selection. Granted I haven't tried the peanut butter or oatmeal raisin cookies, but I still believe him absolutely. The cookie itself isn't huge, but the chocolate chunks are. In total, a delicious treat that leaves you satisfied but guilt free. Small bistro tables fill the space with seating good for 1-3 people and can be pushed together (albeit awkwardly with round tables) for larger groups. Call the decor a cross of rustic, shabby chic, and hipster charm. In total, a place where you can throw down your coat, pull up a chair, and be comfortable lingering. I'll update this review once I've sampled some of the lunch items, but I'm already sold.

Still great. Possibly new owners? Bigger menu Awesome white chocolate macadamia cookies.

They just added the most amazing menu item.... Grilled Jalapeno popper sandwich. OMG.

First time here. Ordered grilled chicken pressed sandwich with gruyere and tomato relish (which was more like pico de gallo). Unfortunately sandwich was bland. It had no personality. I'll give this place another try but not too excited about it. Loved the decor.

I went for lunch on a Wednesday and it was about 50% full, but there are only about 20 seats. This hipster cafe was really nice. The food was quick and the decorations were really interesting. It has a distinct feel from other cafes of its kinds. The cashier was really nice and the menu was a little typical (nothing too interesting) but expansive. My Bacon/Turkey/Cranberry pressed sandwich was really good. If you want something different in Newark, I would recommend ArtKitchen.

A hipster's paradise, Art Kitchen folks in a niche that didn't even know it existed itself. The main selling point are the cupcakes, which are adequate at best. Drinks are hit or miss, but sandwiches are nice. It used to have a nice selection of art supplies for sale as well but I haven't seen any good supplies there lately. Visually appealing, immersing decor gives Art Kitchen a point for people to come visit at least once. I suggest anyone try it, but not if you want a full meal. Go for a snack or dessert if anything.

This is a great place. Delicious coffee, fdelicious bakeries, delicious sandwiches.friendly helpful staff. Oh, they also have various freshly squeezed juice. Their pricing is 1/2 of Le Pain"s. Precious Newark's jewel!

Really bad bagel with cream cheese and lox. 1. The bagel (that was supposed to be everything had a ton more poppy seeds than it did everything) looked nothing like the Manhattan bagels I'm used to. 2. Very little cream cheese 3. The lox was...dry and shriveled up. I don't think it was very fresh. Smoothies are good but overpriced. I'd pass on the coffee. Salads are good.

Stopped in here for lunch today and had an awesome meal. The location is so cute and cozy. The coffee choices are various - I had a chocolate peanut butter coffee! The sandwich menu was long and I couldn't finish it because there was so much awesome stuff on it - I had a turkey sandwich which cranberry and muenster cheese that was all melty and delicious. Top it all up with the free wifi and I'd happily return.

I almost forgot why I stopped coming to art kitchen. Especially when I was initially such a strong supporter of the business when it was just a art supply store and when the two merged with supply's and cupcakes for sale, to when they were alone and the kitchen was born. The other day on my way to work my throat was sore. I thought why not try a small business type instead of the local Dukin donuts. But boy was that a mistake... Well going to art kitchen was . I literally stood there for four minutes while I watched two staff members behind the corner slice lemons and things. No one said a word . I just waited thinking... I thought ... Oh as soon as they notice me they will put their knives down and come over to assist me. That couldn't have been further from the truth. I just stood there... Waiting. I almost left when I glanced over my shoulder and asked the guy dusting shelves.... Could he help me... " they will help you" was his reply. And to make matters worst. I actually parked in front of coffee cave. I should have gone for their tea instead. Their chai tea is amazing Basically Art Kitchen will never receive my business again and if your into being treated like a human being you might want to shy away too

Such a great small little cafe. Pressed sandwiches and pizzas, all below $10 (and most are hovering around $5). Great coffee, espresso, lattees, etc. And lots of fresh squeezed juice. Vegetarian and vegan-friendly, and also very friendly to all you carnivores. My favorites are the Avocado Black Bean Wrap and the Prosciutto/Mozzarella Panini. The cupcakes here are really good as well. The atmosphere is very bohemian, and the staff is polite and quick. Interesting furniture and free WiFi!! If you are a student at Rutgers in Newark, walk the two and a half blocks from campus and kiss Starbucks goodbye!!

Feed Me Some Art Yo! Art Kitchen is a breath of fresh air in Downtown Newark! Price: $10-11 for a drink and food item (on avg.) Ambiance: Cute, warm, inviting and spacious. A rustic Pottery Barn kind of feel Location: Downtown Newark. Near Rutgers-Newark, NJIT, Berkley College & Washington Park (this area is better known as University Heights) Typical Crowd: college students (studying or catching up), young professionals, college staff/ faculty, cops & emergency service personnel from the hospital nearby. What To Order: Sandwiches, coffee/ beverages, salads & breakfast foods. I am absolutely in love with the Chorizo Panini! Special Diets: Vegan, vegetarian and health/ diet conscious options available. Staff: Never consistent! You either get one of two employees; an employee who is very friendly and helpful or an employee whose mind is somewhere in outer space. What Not To Order: Major disappointment, the cupcakes and pastries. The cupcakes were dry; the frosting did nothing for the cupcake and could use a major flavor boost. In other words, the cupcakes aren't terrible but they are pretty dull for a place that screams cupcake from the inside-out. My blueberry muffin was oily and tasted like something I could have easily made better at home from a pre-mixed box. Overall, I think Art Kitchen is a great place and a wonderful place to check out if you happen to be in the area. They have some kinks to work out, but I am glad that a place like Art Kitchen exists in Downtown Newark!

What a cute little gem in Newark. I walked in not expecting much and in return I got a vintagey cafe filled with eclectic furniture. I went around lunch time on a Thursday and it was packed. I was lucky enough to grab a wobbly seat at the picnic table in the back and enjoyed a cup of joe and the free internet. The case of cupcakes were staring at me in the face, but I withstood the temptation. The menu is standard, filled with the sandwich, salad, panini and cupcake fare. Everything was reasonably priced and looked absolutely delicious. And the smell? It was hard not to order any delicious treats since the place's literally smelled like a melted cheese and sweets factory. If you're ever in Newark and need a quick lunch, a place to study, or to meet a friend for a coffee, definitely give ArtKitchen a chance.

Alright. I can now say with confidence that this place is a gem. Pros: -super creative menu! lots of variety -excellent prices -cozy atmosphere/nice ambiance/cute wallpaper/lovely decor -fabulous veg*n options -soy milk!! -friendly staff -vegan desserts -delicious drinks -free wifi -perfect portion sizes Cons: -slow (not great for grabbing something to go during lunch hours) -small tables (difficult to share a table if you both have laptops) In general, I'm a fan! ArtKitchen definitely fills a void in Newark for a cozy coffee shop (sorry, Dunkin Donuts, but you just don't cut it!).

I really enjoyed this cute little cafe. The menu is extensive with various smoothies, cupcakes, pressed sandwiches to choose from. A great hit for university heights and those seeking for a new place to try out and take a break. My favorite thing about this place is their delicious smoothies! SO good and great alternative to an actual meal bc they are actually filling! They have a vintage feel throughout, offer free wifi. Difficult to find a table during lunch time.

I do adore the art kitchen was the Newark art supply was taken over by the art kitchen .. wish they kept the "Newark Art Supply" as their main display outside the building the coffee there are so many choices i was a bit taken away at first. and i love coffee. i get the regular with two shots of espresso i need it strong cupcakes they have the miniature velvet cakes that everyone is crazed over. the funny thing I cant think a place in grove st, NYC, NY Brooklyn that is decorated so nicely. the tables are marble french cafe-esque cool looking couches at the win dow i work in Newark so i come here to get some work done or relax i wish it stayed open later but it is Newark its a 6pm town and everyone clears out.. you can even see the art kitchen in the move "Cadillac Records"

Sandwiches are just as good as their beverages . I recommend the avocado panini with grilled chicken! Price is fair and their wifi connection is always running smoothly. This little hidden gem reminds me of the coffee shops located in the village in manhattan. Definitely a go to spot for any student looking to get work done at an amiable atmosphere .

This was my little home away from home when I was taking a class at Newark. I'd go to the pool, then go to Art Kitchen to do the reading. The salads were good. The cupcake, despite its status as the Art Kitchen logo, was not. The icing was too solid and not lickable. I like a cafe much better than the library or a picnic table.

Great cookies and really nice people. It seems to be the only place to get a coffee and hangout in the neighborhood. Worth the walk, though.

This place is so wonderful, the staff is very pleasant and hilarious to talk to as well! I go there in the morning for my chai tea latte and oatmeal, which is super delicious! I found this place after I left Central Cafe for their rudeness and I'm so glad I did! Definitely an at home environment with the shops down in that area on Halsey. Everyone is so nice and I love the boutique style feel. The seating is small but cute! I have had lunch there, but I think I will just stick to the breakfast menu. Plus I have a hard time deciding over some of the restaurants in that area as it is, so everyone gets a fair shot.

Art Kitchen is a real gem in Newark. It has everything you would want in a quirky coffeeshop and lunch spot. The food is all fairly priced, so the decently sized salad I got was $4.95. It has all kinds of unusual offerings, like the prosciutto, brie and artichoke hearts panini dipped in honey...yeah it sounds weird, but it was truly delectable. They also have great coffee, and sell smoothies and juices for those of you who are in the liquid diet cult. Aside from the delicious food and drink, this place is so welcoming and low-key, not pretentious at all, and there is ample room for those of you who'd like to set up shop and do some work or reading. Finally, the decor is so varied and intriguing, you really want to check out every corner and see what it holds! I believe they have pottery from a local artist on sale as well, always great to support the local community.

Want to update my review after trying the food. I really wanted a chicken salad sandwich. Not exactly sure why, but pretty sure a Wendy's commercial I saw on TV is to blame. After searching yelp for "chicken salad" and "chicken salad sandwich" and coming up empty, I thought of ArtKitchen. Didn't know if they had chicken salad sandwiches but I knew they did have sandwiches and figured I'd give it a go. In the end, I got the sandwich I wanted. It was Friday night and the place had a spoken word performance going. Although I got my sandwich to go, I stayed to watch the performer finished as she was really good. My sandwich was under $5 and a pretty good deal. Standard chicken salad, nothing amazing but it was okay. The bread was really good. It was perfectly toasted and I normally do not eat white bread (forgot to ask for wheat) but it was delicious. Not sure where they get it from but the bread totally made the sandwich. Considering the price, taste, and location (Newark doesn't exactly have a myriad of casual cafe options after lunch hours end), I give it 4 stars. Would come back to try the other sandwiches. Also, in my previous review, I mentioned how I prefer T.M. ward coffee which isn't much further. Well, this place (like many other places in the area) actually serves T.M. Ward coffee. They don't have as many flavors and I believe the cost is more but since they are open until 8 (and Ward's until 4:30), not a bad option for a great cup of coffee in the early evening. Overall: pretty good coffee and (from what I have seen) food. Don't recommend the cupcakes but to each their own. Just wish they were open later...

I love coming here and seeing the police officers with their little espresso cups and tiny saucers. They even follow the "pinkies out" rule. It was adorable. Then, they ride off in their badass motorbikes after doing their badass paperwork at the cafe. But anyway .. When I come here, I usually get the chorizo pressed sandwich, the hummus, or the nutella &banana sandwich. Yum. Great capuccinos and delicious smoothies/shakes. I wish they had more outlets here, but on the bright side, there are lots of seats. Oh and they have dynamite brownies. It's thick/gooey and kind of reminds me of fudge.

  • Bob J.

I came here feeling a little iffy, but their spinach lentil soup made me feel a lot better. It was the only soup that day, but came with a decent portion of bread and was just what I needed. I like the vibe here, it's very chill and seems like it would be a good place to work - outside of the normal tables, there are two larger seating areas with bigger tables. Inexpensive and cozy.

  • L. Eliza C.

It is close to Rutgers and it is full of students with their laptops. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about their coffee and cupcakes. I come here for coffee since the nearby Dunkin Donut coffee seems weak to me if you get it after 4pm. I have had a few different types of coffee and sweets here and I have been happy with them. So if you are looking for a nice spot to chill and have your coffee, guess where I recommend, this place!

I am very conflicted about this place. This used to be my go to spot while taking classes in grad-school. I liked the reverse Victorian wallpaper on the sides of the room and the whole vintage feel. The coffee is rather good and the one smoothie I got was good as well but a bit pricey for the size. I really like their assortment of Boylan sodas and Mexican Coke. Their paninis are also good. I recommend the turkey cranberry sandwich which is delicious. They are known for their cupcakes which were delicious but for some reason are no longer available. My conflict with this place is that while it does a hipster vibe, it became too hipster. I would come in multiple times a week to study and would get the same thing. After a few months I joked about getting "my usual" to which they looked at me as if I had never passed the lintle of the building. After that incident I came with a friend to get cupcakes and found out they no longer carry them and the fellow working was rather snarky about it. They apparently take hipster too far to the point where they don't care about regular customers.

This place is great for newark, and hopefully will encourage more cool, young and hip people and stores to come to Halsey Street! They should bring in more art to look at/sell, that would be awesome. Their fresh juices are superb and so are the freshly baked goods. They put three whole apples in my fresh pressed juice! Very healthy spot, but also has some treats that i would seek out, such as the Nutella Pressed Sandwiches!

Here we are walking to a event in Newark and we decided to stop here to grab a quick bite. Trust me this place looks like as if it is in east village. If one removes the Prudential Building from the backdrop, no one can say that it is Newark, it definitely looks a cozy joint in east or west village in New York. The decor of this is simple yet elegant. They have some couches in the front and some tables in the back. I ordered the Chorizo sandwich and my friend had the espresso coffee. Damm that sandwich was super delicious and after a very long time I had such an awesome sandwich. They have an exhaustive menu covering from salads, soups, sandwiches to cupcakes. I hope to try other things on the menu next time. The servers behind the counter were quick and attentive.

I guess I'm an ArtKitchen hater. I think the sandwiches are pretty good, esp their pesto and nutella ones. I do think they're kind of small for the price and don't bring chips or anything with them. But considering they have the financial district, Newark PD, and art supplies - I guess they figure those people can pay a little extra for their paninis. Personally I think they'd do a little better by throwing in some kettle chips or something with their sandwiches like the Rutgers Business school cafe does. The cupcakes are pretty mediocre and small for the price. I don't like that their refrigerated sometimes (who wants a cold cupcake??). The only thing that saves them are their smoothies, my coworkers will walk in 30 degree weather to go get one. Anyways, I've been there only once and will probably go anywhere to subway for my sandwiches, they toast them there too. Oh and no credit cards, which really sucks if you're a plasitc lover like me.

Describing Newark to friends back home, I often compare Newark to Oakland. A down on its luck city that has a lot of government workers and lawyers downtown and always on a verge of a renaissance. There are three main differences however, (1) not a lot of ethnic mixing, (2) there is a lack of good, inexpensive, fresh food, and (3) there is way less drama from the Occupy movement in Newark. ArtKitchen, reminds me of Oakland and yet reminds me of what I miss. Take ArtKitchen out of Newark's own Hipster Row on Halsey and plop it in Uptown Oakland or Temescal and it would not look out of place. It serves nice sandwiches, coffee and cupcakes. The ingredients are good and they're probably organic and local and all that goodness. It has an artsy, hipstery vibe that reminds me of home. All I need is somebody saying "hella" and a Korean restaurant down the street and it would be just like Oakland. However, the food here may be good, but it is not inexpensive and the portions are tiny. A lunch can set me back close to ten dollars and would sadly leave me wanting more. As a broke law student, I can't afford to eat here often, especially if eating lunch here would necessitate me eating a snack later in the day. For what I spent here, I could have purchased a lunch at Bakesale Betty in Oakland. yelp.com/biz/bakesale-be… The difference is that the fried chicken sandwich from Bakesale Betty is a filling meal. Cheap good food that a foodie can get excited about, that's what I miss the most and that's the hardest thing the find in Jersey, let alone NYC.

The selection here is a bit limited. I had the banana nutella panini & a latte. Kind of hard to not like those ingredients together. It was decent. Didn't find it out of this world. I thought the place was cute. There are sitting areas near the windows where you sorta feel like you're in a living room.

Great ambience!!! This place is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Newark. Great service, food, desserts and coffees. I came in and had one of the fresh fruit juices... For the price it was good to see that they actually juice the fruit and veggies right front of you. While they were a little heavy on the ginger, I still enjoyed it. The thing that will keep me coming back here is definitely the customer service and ambience. Next time I'll actually try a cupcake... Trying to watch my figure!

This place is really cute and I hope stays open for quite a while. Its places like this that give Newark a better image. And on top of that, it helps promote the art community of Newark. On a store level, this place was much better when it first opened. A decent amount of supplies for the students for Rutgers and NJIT. I have no clue as to what they're doing now beside custom framing. On a food level, its almost awesome. The only major complaint I have about this place is that their logo has a cupcake on it and when you walk in, there are no cupcakes on display. I tried a classic RED VELVET cupcake - and from what I remember of it, it was just good. Moist...the perfect size....except the icing wasn't cream cheese frosting, it was vanilla. So don't listen to these loonies stayin its freaking awesome, because it's not. ( I've only tried one their sandwiches, the TURKEY w/ Bacon, Muenster, and Cranberry and I have to say it was quite delicious! The french bread that it came on was very fresh. Their ingredients were fresh and the cherry on the top is that they panini press them. I think if they bring back the supplies and show more cupcakes, this place would have gotten that last star. Great sandwiches and selection of drinks...cute hangout...free wi-fi...one thumb up.

Nice little cafe on halsey street. Great place to have lunch. Food: The wraps & flat bread pizzas r great. Try the flatbread pizza with olive paste and chick peas. The food servings are perfect for one person, not oversized as most places are. The pricing is also affordable. Drinks: You could go for hot tea, coffee, juices or smoothies. The coffee is really good. Espressos are good here too, which is a rare finding in most part of this town. Decor: I like the decor here. Its cozy with some interesting antique elements. All in all a refreshing experience.

I went to ArtKitchen to attend an art gallery for my friend Dannu on March 1, 2013. His 13 paintings were displayed in "ArtKitchen", one of the most comfortable artistic cafe' place to lounge around anywhere in the facility from sitting at a chair, bench, steps or couch. ArtKitchen has room for all and is welcome to enjoy not just the artifacts, but the variety of choosing which foods, hot or cold beverages, desserts, and snacks to munch on. Dannu's artistic style is phenomenal, creative, and talented. He chose the right place to display his paintings, as well as greeting and explaining to his buyers and press what inspired him to create such a work of art. As a blogger I took the liberty to interview him and his art, which was an honor, and proud as a friend. Go to my facebook page to view more on Dannu's Art and interview questions. facebook.com/sherlley.al…

An inconspicuous gem in Newark that feels out of place, in a good way. Healthy food, good prices, and unlike anything around in downtown Newark. Stop in for lunch or dinner and you won't be disappointed. I had the oatmeal with walnuts and raisins with coffee for breakfast on this particular visit. For lunch they have a variety of gourmet sandwiches to enjoy all made to order. Friendly waitstaff and good service. I'd go here over subway 5 out of 5 times.

Pro: The avocado-black bean-tomato-lettuce wrap is pretty baller. Great if you want to eat vegan, but are too lazy to make food for yourself. Con: They are too hipster to carry cheap name brand sodas.

The first time I came here I got the tomato/basil/mozzarella panini. It was alright, VERY salty. The next I got the bruschetta personal pizza. If you're very hungry I would recommend getting fruit/chips with it because it's rather small. Good though, it was very sweet. The main reason I'm giving it a 3 is the one server. Blonde, perhaps an Eastern European accent. She was not friendly, she had no patience, and (this is an odd comment, I know, but it was rather distracting- ) I could see her entire butt. Literally the whole thing. Her shorts were cut like halfway across. It was really bizarre.

Very cute place with interesting decor and seating. My friend and I came here after lunch for a sweet snack. I ordered a hazelnut cappuccino and peanut butter cupcake, while my friend had a red velvet cupcake. The cappuccino was delicious and the pb cupcake definitely had potential. As I was eating it, I did wonder just how many of those desserts this medium-sized place in downtown Newark could actually sell in a few days. The cupcakes could have been fresher, although the flavor was very good. My friend was not impressed with her cupcake, especially since the frosting was hard from storage in the refrigerator. Honestly, the refrigeration thing worries me a bit because it means they probably make too many cupcakes at once. The gentlemen behind the counter were very friendly and helpful, so that always helps.

consistently inconsistent.. how many strikes before i stop going here? i seem to end up here out of desperation as the Thai place around the corner has a line that is too long for me to wait on during a work lunch hour.. so i head over to be disappointed at Art Kitchen.. again.. some of the reasons for two stars: - never open at the same time in the morning.. i drive by here on my way to work and i'm always there about the same time (8:00-8:15) you'd think a place that serves great coffee and breakfast items would have already been open! and if they are, and you want a breakfast item - i've had them tell me the items haven't been delivered yet.. yikes.. - long wait - even if no one is there.. this has happened quite a few times to me.. they seem to run on a clock that's been dipped in honey.. - always out of one ingredient or another.. usually you only find out AFTER you've ordered and they tell you halfway into making your sandwich about what substitutions you'd like.. ugh.. this changes everything when you're set on a certain kind of sandwich.. today, however, i decided that i will probably never get lunch or anything else there again.. i got the usual Marinated Chickpea sandwich ($6.15 with tax!) which is supposed to be on thick sliced wheat bread with marinated chickpea spread, preserved lemon, olive tapenade and fresh spinach.. at least, this is how it was the first time i ordered it and fell in love.. ever since that first time - it hasn't been the same and i've given them more than enough chances.. either they're out of spinach or they're out of tapenade and need to sub hummus or they didn't have the wheat bread or they were simply out of the sandwich completely.. this has happened more often than not.. so when they do have it i get all excited and start to drool and don't mind paying the outrageous price.....unfortunately, this sandwich consistently sets me up for disappointment.. what was the problem today? i thought there wouldn't be one for a change! no wait time (place was dead at high noon), i got my sandwich and wasn't told about any shortages or substitutions.. great! so i get to my desk.. open it up.. and it's on a portuguese roll.. a very hard and stale portuguese roll.. and no spinach.. and the olive tapenade was covering the tops and bottoms of the sandwich as much as the inside.. what's worse, my stomach isn't really agreeing with its contents right now.. in fact, i could say more, but i've got to run to the bathroom (totally serious)..

ArtKitchen is a welcome spot of tranquility in a long-standing (but little known) artistic enclave in Newark. The food is great: sandwiches, breakfast items, smoothies, soups, and paninis have all been tasty every time I've tried something new. The cupcakes usually get all the attention in this place, but the food and tea/coffee beverages need some Yelp love too. Ambiance is relaxing and very smooth, with eclectic artist supplies for sale and lots of great info about local art events. Really dig this place, and would recommend it to anyone who wants healthy good tasting food in downtown Newark.

Went there today for lunch with a co-worker and I completely loved it. It's a really chill atmosphere with free Wi-Fi, a couple couches and cute little tables. We chose to sit in the back at a shabby-chic picnic table. I could see this as a good spot to hold a casual meeting or get-together with some friends. The food selection was excellent with a choice of wraps, grill-pressed sandwiches, salads, individual pizzas, smoothies, coffees and teas. A lot of healthy options for the health-conscious or vegan, vegetarians in your party. I decided to go with the grilled chicken breast with spinach and goat cheese on grill-pressed whole wheat bread with a strawberry banana smoothie made with apple juice. Loved, loved, loved my meal. The service was also excellent. The staff were super-nice and concerned that you were satisfied with your meal. So rare these days to get that kind of customer service. Forgot to mention that they have some great fresh-made cupcakes and other desserts. I ordered a piece of red velvet cake to go and completely forgot about it, until they brought it over to me before I left. I highly recommend this place and since I work nearby, I will definitely be in again.

Quaint little place that gives off the feeling that you're in NYC as opposed to Newark. They have a couple couches in each corner which are great for lounging. They have a great selection of food (salads, soups, sandwiches) and drinks (excellent coffee) which are moderately priced.

Newark ain't the easiest place to find something delicious and healthy. I'm here for for work around lunchtime on a somewhat regular basis, and while I love the elegant (expensive!!) Portuguese restaurants, sometimes I just want something simple. Art Kitchen is a rarity here. I had the proscuitto, artichoke and brie sandwich which was big enough for a meal but light enough that I didn't need to crash for an hour afterwards. I'm big on bread quality and t was served on the loveliest toastiest of big crusty bread. It was also extremely reasonably priced - $6 for a sandwich. I'll most definitely be back.

Cutest little place, loved going here while I attended Rutgers. Best of all, they have HEALTHY stuff on the menu, juices and smoothies, and a few really good vegan options

I had a very, very yummy panini, great chai tea latte. Internet connection is very fast. Staff friendly and quick. Great alternative to the chains. And very cool art :)

So I went back and although the cupcakes are still without cream cheese frosting, most of them are flavored now... their showcase cakes-by-the-slice do indeed have the right frosting- and it was DELISH. I also like the peanut butter/banana combo I had. Their coffees are good-- and their garbanzo bean sandwich with lemon is also very well-made. aaaaaaaand they're smiling more--

I only went to Art Kitchen once, but since my time working in Newark is up and I won't be able to try it again I figured I'll write a review with the bit of information I have. The place is very open and comfortable, definitely a good sit-down option for lunch. The staff was friendly, and I could see it being a place where you'd become friends with them if you went constantly. I got some sort of chicken, goat cheese, and vegetable wrap. It was good (I'm a sucker for goat cheese), though the chicken was a bit dry. Hard to say based on my one eating experience, but it seems like the ingredients are relatively good and fresh, if not certified fresh. I got a wrap and a cappuccino, and it came out to over 12 dollars; that surprised me. The coffee was good, though. In hindsight, I would have probably gone here a few more times to mix up my lunch options. This is another place worth checking out on Halsey Street that won't blow you away, but is more than satisfactory in the area. Also, you can definitely get a clean healthy meal here which is nice.

Art Kitchen is owned by the same great folks who run Hells Kitchen in the Ironbound. It's namesake can be attributed to Newark Art Supply which originally shared its space. As the kitchen grew, it took over the space and NAS moved to Gallery Aferro. (But I think NAS is now officially closed--sadly.) They are known for their cupcakes (just make sure yours isn't too hard, as they've grown, sometimes the cakes sit too long). The lemon ones are tasty, as are the classic red velvet. A box of 4 makes a nice bday surprise for coworkers and friends! I've also had the hummus and fresh tomato & basil panini, decent, but not worth a special trip. A good move in the right direction for Newark businesses!

Ughhhhh I think everyone just has really low standards for cupcakes in NJ. Please hop on the PATH train in Newark, transfer in Journal Square, and take it to the 9th Street station. Walk to Molly's Cupcakes (228 Bleecker St) to taste THE REAL DEAL.

The ArtKitchen does everything right. The assorted panini's are simply composed of quality ingredients. The coffee is strong, the cupcakes are fresh, and the staff is friendly, young and hip. I owe my JD, and probably my first born, to this place.

I love Art Kitchen. I wouldn't have survived 1L without it. Bruno, one of the several bearded shop staff, makes amazing foam. I miss Sammy though!

The bad: 1. They never have ice. (Don't advertise frozen beverages if you can't make them!) 2. They never have soup. (Don't put it on your sign!) 3. Employees need to learn the difference between ICED and FROZEN/BLENDED (one is cubes of ices, the latter is put in a blender) \ The good: 1. It's close to Rutgers. 2. You can write love notes on the typewriter and they don't yell at you. 3. Usually they play indie rock music.

Comfy and cupcakes....what a combo! This place rocks. It is hard to find a good cupcake spot. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled on this place in the middle of downtown Newark.

Came here today hoping to eat cupcakes. However, they didn't have any... Ordered a Chorizo sandwich and it was honestly the best sandwich I've eaten all summer. Indefinitely recommend this place.

Healthy, tasty food for a fair price (sandwiches are about $6 or so). I like their cupcakes and iced coffee as well. This is a cool little coffeeshop in downtown Newark, and there's really nowhere else like it in the area.

I love the ArtKitchen. It's my go-to lunch spot because of my favorite take-out sandwich of all time: the chickpea, preserved lemon, and tomato sandwich on rustic bread. It's delish and just $5. As other reviewers have said, they serve TM Ward coffee which is excellent as well. The staff is consistently friendly and pretty fast and while I'll miss the vibe of the art supply store, I'm glad there will be more room to sit down. Parking sort of sucks in the area, but I do pretty well on Washington around lunchtime, just watch your meter closely.

I'm a great big fan of the Art Kitchen. The coffee is consistently good, the baked goods are very tasty, everything is affordable, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The only things that would make it better is if they were open longer hours on the weekends and if they served beer!

This place is great! I love their cupcakes and HUGE muffins. They also have wonderful warm drinks. Their chai latte is the best I've ever had. They have some of their sandwiches. Their warm grilled sandwiches are very tasty. My only complaint is that they say they open at 8 on week days but many days they are not open then so I cannot get a coffee on my way to work

The ingredients are fresh, and the food's good, but the portion's aren't great for the price. If you go on a Saturday, be prepared for them to be out of at least one ingredient. The staff are friendly and warm, and the atmosphere is cozy and eclectic, which makes up for the small deficiencies.

I frequented this location several times. They have some simple sandwiches and bagels, and delicious coffee. I'd say they're vegetarian-friendly. Drop by and hang for an afternoon!

Awesome cupcakes - definitely not overrated. Their red velvet cupcakes have ruined all others for me. Aside from coffee and dessert, it's a nice stop for lunch. I usually get the fresh mozzarella sandwich. My one complaint is that they only have one size for cold cups - 12 oz, which is REALLY small when you're getting an iced beverage. This would be my morning stop for iced coffee and a bagel if only they had larger sizes!

My friend from work would always but the red velvet cup cakes and bring them back to office. I fell in love with the first bite. These bite size red delicious, oh have I mention the sweet cream icing...oh yes! Have not stayed yet for a coffee or sandwich. I was tempted to purchase a slice of carrot cake that looked like heaven but I thought about the beach and stuck with my little red velvet cup cake heaven

What a great place in the central ward, coffee and art. This place makes the best espresso in the central ward. Plus the fresh baked cupcakes are a sinfully delicious afternoon compliment to a double espresso. The espresso I have had is well made, not over or under extracted and has a nice firm crema. Plus I have had stuff framed here, they did a wonderful job. Plus they have a few seats inside and a great vibe, by far the best place to relax and enjoy your espresso in area.

Crumbs cupcakes got nothing on this place. You can buy some decent sandwiches too for a quick lunch. You can buy art supplies here too, if you have the sudden epiphany that you need a paintbrush while licking a cupcake. They also use Ward's coffee, which as I have established, is the best coffee pretty much anywhere.

Newark art kitchen. Artsy and cool This place actually serves a mean cup of joe a delicious pressed sandwhich and Freakishly good cupcakes. I got 2 of the mocha cupcakes in some vain attempt to bring one home for my birthday..... That just didnt happen. After eating one the other was destroyed in my mouth. The sanwhich was also pretty damn good and crispy. They also have art supplies and lots of artists types hanging about. Ahh yes a cool scene indeed... ill be back!

With very limited food options around Rutgers, this is definitely a great place to grab a bite, get some coffee, or just to chillax. Since their portions are generally smaller than other local places, the recent price hike took me by surprise. But they have ample seating inside, so it is usually one of the only places where I can study or chat with friends without the pressure of turning tables.

I got a smoked salmon sandwich with capers - it was really good. The place is cute and serves as an art supply store as well. Ive seen cafe + other venue combos work terribly, but this is perfect, especially if you're within walking distance of the place. Makes me wish i was still a rutgers newark student :)

This quirky corner art supply store has become a favorite afternoon coffee break spot for me and my colleagues. I really enjoy the iced latte, which is also a bargain at $2.75. I also highly recommend the lemonade, which is homemade, flavorful, and just ever so slightly sweetened. I had the unsweetened iced tea for the first time today, and found it to be very refreshing with a slice of lemon. If you're stuck in Downtown Newark on hot, Summer afternoons, try to make your way to the Art Kitchen for your afternoon refreshment needs

This place is great! I stop in every morning on my way to Rutgers because of Sammy, she is so great! The service when she is there is wonderful. I have only had one sour, not so pleasant experience with a thin tall young man, Octavio, who would not take my $4 with a debit card because there's a $8 minimum rule for debit card, so that was a bad morning without caffeine. This was after I had waited in line for a couple minutes. But thank God Sammy is so great and makes my morning run smoothly. I would recommend the cupcakes, sandwiches, coffees and smoothies to anyone. Everything I've tried has been great...

I'm so glad that this place is close to my job in Newark. First of all, the coffee, food, and cupcakes are great. Right now, I am a fan of the hummus & flatbread and their iced coffee. Second, the decor and feel of place is super cute. Third, the staff is friendly, stylish, and they play really good music. Fourth, it is nice to have access in Newark to art supplies, framing, and cool framed pictures . I bought a lovely framed etching of the Newark skyline for only $20. They have a lot of other nice rendering of Newark available for sale, as well.
