It had been a long time since I'd been to an Ethiopian restaurant and by the time I got here I was a bit dazed.I'd been to a three hour play, opera , dance event without intermission. So things were confused but it went well.Four of us shared a meat combo and a bunch of vegetable sides. Everything was good .We brought wine. The place is attractive and service was good.A little expensive but I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

What a wonderful cultural experience! This place is just absolutely wonderful. As soon as you walk in, you instantaneously feel the Ethiopian culture with all decors and overall ambiance. I appreciate how the back of the menu enumerates the definitions of all the culinary relayed words! The service was excellent. Our server was very attentive, accommodating, and kind. Most importantly, the way the food was presented is the best part. It's just something so new and different. Very delicious as well, of course. P.S. The Ethiopian coffee is a fantastic way to top it all off!

Well I can't speak to the atmosphere of the establishment because I haven't been but I can speak to the food! Our cousin had her vegan wedding catered in Massachusetts and it was catered by the one and only Mesob! This was my first time being eating Ethiopian food and I was pleasantly surprised by not only the taste but also by the culture. The cabbage and the lentil choices were my top two favorite (if I have to pick!) but all of the food was phenomenal. I also feel the individuals who own this establishment must be so kind to travel so far for a wedding. They were all so welcoming, knowledgable about food allergens (brought gf/df injera!) and food activism and just appeared to be so caring. If you have a chance to stop by their location in NJ, I would say without hesitation that you should make that choice. Overall: Great food, caring employees and simply put .... Great overall

I can't believe I passed by this place for so many years. Amazing cuisine. I had the shrimp tibs with collards and cabbage. Sooo amazing. I can't wait to return. I only ended up here because Cuban Pete's had their typical 4 hour wait. I'm so glad I came. Unforgettable food. Great staff and ambiance - BYOB as everything is in Montclair.

This will be the second time I've eaten at an Ethiopian resturant and the last did not impress. Sadly neither did this. I don't care much for the injera which is a big problem because you eat a lot of it. Nothing about the food really grabs me and nothing about it is spicy like indian cuisine, which has similar fare. In fact the food taste to me kinda bland. Also this silly rule of being required to have an entree per person I didn't really like. I get that they're trying ensure they get their money but you don't have to be rude about it, and tell us no sharing is allowed or we'll be charged twice. Which brings me to the service. I think perhaps there may have been a language barrier because for like 5 minutes the waitress is trying explain that in order to redeem our free appetizer we must order something and we cannot order a single entree. The problem is she was telling us in the most backward way beginning with you can't get the free app, we ask why, she says you must order entree...and so on. Also after she actually took our orders another server comes over to begin and we tell him our order has been taken. What did I have? The Miser wat and dinch wat (since you must have 2). Neither were particularly great to me. The other reviews may be high but I'd say this is just a great place as an cheap alternative to a buffet where you can byob since most of the tables had 4 or more people here, but I fail to see the big deal here.

I've ate at several different Ethiopian restaurant's in NJ and this by far is the BEST! They have veggies that are made 100% vegan which is great since I'm a vegetarian. Great food and great service!

I love the food, but hate the service. Since my first time here, the service gets worse and worse. It could be 2 PM or 6 PM and its just not stellar. Altho, this weekend i did come here for a party of 12 around 7 pm for a birthday---i was slightly immpressed with how quickly the food came out. Thats something ive noticed about this place, the food doesnt always take long to come out BUT the waitors and watiresses take forever giving water, taking orders and being organized. They also DO NOT take parties over 10 on a weekend ( even with reservations)_, my friend had to beg and beg to let them do a party of 12 and let me tell you..this place was packed. Their lunch specials are totally worth it but honestly, the service when i came here durin a lunch hour was absolutely terrible---and the place wasnt even packed!

It's not often I get a chance to eat Ethiopian food so I'm not sure how much merit my review has but overall I enjoyed it. The bread even alone was delicious, but warning that in a couple hours it will billow out from time and other liquids you might ingest. The free appetizer on yelp was an awesome bonus. We got the Ingudai Tips-portobello mushrooms-spicy and boy were they spicy..and a bit oily. The Doro Aletcha-mild chicken drumstick-entree was delicious and I absolutely recommend!!! The flavor had amazing flavor! As for the sides, the Gomen-collard greens-and the kik aletcha were my favorite because of the texture. I felt like the shiro and the others were a little too mushy for me. You can absolutely ask for more injeb and of course it's BYOB. Service was laid back giving me and my friend lots of time to catch up with little pressure.

First of all, this place smells delicious. Whatever spices are circulating through the air here definitely gets you in the mood for Ethiopian. For apps, my two buddies and I went with the ayib bemitmita (fresh farmer's cheese mixed with Ethiopian chili powder) and ye-misir sambussa (hand wrapped shells of thin pastry filled with a blend of brown lentils, onions, scallions, peppers & herbs). The latter reminded me of an Indian samosa. Both very good. And thanks to a Yelp check-in, one of these was on the house. For the main course, we split the meat sampler for two ($44). It had: - a combination of Tibs Wat (beef). Wat's that? No idea. - Minchet Abish Kay Wat (beef). Same comment as above. - Minchet Abish Aletcha (beef). - Ye'Beg Aletcha (lamb). - Doro Tibs (chicken). The sample came with three sides of our choice. We opted for the: - gomen (fresh collard green simmered in mild sauce seasoned with spice and herbs) - misir wat (split lentils simmered in spicy hot sauce - dinich wat (potatoes simmered in a spicy sauce seasoned with spices & herbs). The servers (both from Ethiopia) were excellent about explaining everything to us, even though I still didn't leave entirely certain what I had consumed. The only disappointment of the night was that nobody wanted to split the Ethiopian coffee with me. (I'm a self-proclaimed coffee snob and am convinced I will make it to Ethiopia some day just for the coffee). Remember to check in on Yelp to get a free app. BYOB.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! At first, I was very apprehensive to eat at Mesob. I had heard about it from a number of people who raved about it. "What's Ethiopian food like?", I would ask repeatedly. No one could give me a good description except saying, "You eat with your hands." Wait, you eat with your what now? This was VERY off-putting to me. Especially because I was told you eat with your hands off the same dish as everyone. All those hands touching the same food... germs everywhere... Eventually, my curiosity overcame my germophobe-ness and I gave in. I must say, Ethiopian food is delicious! Especially at Mesob! Basically, for any Ethiopian newbies, the best way I can describe it is there are various stews to choose from that include a main ingredient: veggie, lamb, chicken, beef. You choose a few and they are put on a big platter of injera, which is basically like a spongy pancake. You tear off pieces of the injera and use it to pick up chunks of your stew and soak up the delicious juices. The food is so flavorful and intoxicating. After eating there the first time, I ended up going back a few days later to eat there again. Also, not only is the food delicious but it's all reasonably priced and with friendly service. It's BYOB and is conveniently located near a liquor store. Definitely come here if you're looking for something different and delicious to eat.

Great atmosphere, great people & service, reasonably priced. I tried lamb Lega Tibs and Gomen Besiga - Delicious! I'm definitely going back to try other dishes.

Love this restaurant. We always get the vegetarian sampler and my absolute favorite, hands down, is the buticha. So good. Lovely desserts as well - particularly the chocolate espresso cake. BYOB and there's a liquor store around the corner. Mesob makes me happy every time.

I really did not know what to expect with Ethiopian food. I guess I thought it would be like Indian food. Dont get me wrong. It kind of is. However, my main critique (also the reason why I gave only 2 stars) is because I dont like injera ("spongy" flatbread). I like the little portions of their meat platter alot. They were delicious! However, I feel like it would taste a lot better with naan. I also used the free appetizer deal by checking in on Yelp. I ordered Ayib Bemitmita, which is farmer's cheese. Yet again, I expected it to taste similar to Indian paneer. I think I am just biased with Indian food because it's so damn good. Sorry, Ethiopia. The restaurant itself is really nice and quaint. The staff is friendly. The menu is pretty expensive, but its expected in the Montclair area. Everything is all good..... EXCEPT injera. Thus, my review is not that helpful because I personally do not like their flatbread. If you like it, the place is probably more you cup of tea.

Quite honestly this was a very good place but the lingering thought I had was it wasn't the best Ethiopian I've had (I have tried about 4 others all of which are too far apart to be alternatives to each other). The service was excellent and the dining room was very nicely appointed. We were a party of two that shared the vegetarian sampler of 6 items selected from the sampler list. Everything was good but I think we were hoping for some more heat from some of the dishes with berbere as the main spice. Also, the lentil dish was a little bland. Given this I am still rating it high because it was quite tasty overall and I would definitely return for another meal. Next time I will try some meat dishes for good measure. Having tried both their teff and wheat injera I would recommend the teff simply for taste (not gluten issues).

One of the great things about Ethiopian food is the vegetarian options are just as delicious as the meat options. So I was pumped when I heard there's an Ethiopian place in Montclair when I was in the area. Came here on a Saturday evening for dinner after making reservation and was able to walk right in with no wait. The restaurant is located right in the middle of town and has a laid back vibe to it. Many of the people there seem to be frequent diners. I had the vegetarian sampler which is a mix of six different kinds of vegetables of your choice. It comes on the patented and delicious Ethiopian bread that is eaten with the meal. The dish was delicious, however it could have been a little hotter in temperature. That kind of took away from the taste for me. Other than that, it was a very enjoyable meal in a very nice restaurant.

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I really enjoyed it! My husband and I ordered the five-meat sampler and we loved the family-style, eat-with-your-hands approach. It was a lot of fun to taste many of their meat dishes and veggie sides -- I especially liked the collard greens. If you have never scooped up food with this special fresh-made crepe-like bread, grab a bottle of red wine and go give it a shot! There are so many different kinds of flavors, you're bound to find something you like. Extra points for an extremely friendly and accommodating staff!

Before reading up on Montclair, I had no clue there were any Ethiopian restaurants anywhere in New Jersey within an hour of my home. It's been about a year since I last had Ethiopian food, so when the time came to choose a dinner spot during my recent visit Mesob won hands down. It also helped that it was mentioned in a couple online articles I had read about the town. When you walk into Mesob, you feel transported. You're not on busy Bloomfield avenue. You're inside a comfortable, warm (and well decorated) zone. The furniture and seats are all nice wood colors. The walls have a warm white and orange color combination. Paintings hang on the walls and in the center host island are tall lambs with (what I was told) a foreign alphabet printed onto them. The appearance is striking and it immediately draws you in. The smell of delicious spices and food help too! The staff was super nice. Every server was fast, efficient and sweet. They genuinely want to please and they do a great job. We were seated, our orders taken, water provided and food on the table within a twenty minute stretch. It helped that we knew what we wanted, but keep in mind some dishes require about 15 minutes to prepare since they're made fresh. All the food is served on Injera bread, a spongy, slightly sour bread served in a round shape on a round platter. The foods you order are generally scooped on top of this bread when you are served, making for a delicious and dramatic presentation! So here's the verdict on the food I had with my girlfriend: INJERA BREAD Let's start with the basics. The Injera bread was soft, spongy and had the slightly sour taste you want with this bread. This also serves as your "utensil" to eat with (you rip pieces off and scoop the food up in it) and it held together perfectly. LEGA TIBS Cubed boneless leg of lamb marinated & sautéed with onions, garlic, jalapenos, fresh tomato, herbs & spices. This can be spicy, but we had it at "medium". It was very tasty and all the spices were just right, not too heavy, not too light. A couple of meat chunks were tougher than I would've liked, but that was only a couple and not a majority of them. DORO TIBS Scalloped chicken breast marinated & sautéed with red onions, garlic, jalapeno pepper, fresh tomato, herbs & spices. We also had this medium, but it wound up coming out a bit spicier than the Lega Tibs, but that was fine by me since I like spicy! The chicken had a nice texture and tasted wonderful. TIKIL GOMEN (Side) Cabbage and potatoes simmered in mild sauce. I've had this dish in other restaurants before, and it was generally mild. This version however was packed with flavor and hit me with an unexpected (but pleasant) punch of flavor. It was also wonderfully tender. KIK ALETCH (Side) Yellow split peas simmered in a mild and flavorful onion and herb sauce. This is normally a very mild dish, but this version had a sweetness that I really appreciated given the sea of spicy foods on the platter. GOMEN (Side) Fresh collard green simmered in mild sauce seasoned with spice and herbs. This had a mild flavor. The greens had a nice chew and I recommend it as a good palette balancer for all the spicy food you might get. MISIR WAT (Side) Split lentils simmered in spicy hot sauce. This was a lentil dish with some fire! It didn't burn but it definitely had a flavor that will wake up your taste buds! Overall I loved my experience at Mesob and look forward to my next trip!

I have a certain fondness for the food at Mesob. The service has always been good and paced just right, even on nights when we were squeezed in without a reservation (but I do recommend making one especially on weekends, during busy seasons, etc). I've eaten at some Ethiopian restaurants in NYC expecting the same flavor profiles as Mesob's cuisine...and they never came close. We did pig out just a little bit during my latest visit. I used my Yelp check in free app to try the Ayib Bemimita. That farmer's cheese mixed with chili powder is killer and they give you plenty for two people. I had fun mixing the cheese later with some of the meat dishes. I also tried the Ye'misir Sambussa..delicious crispy pastry shells filled with brown lentils and some veggies and seasonings. The Meat Sampler for 2 was almost too much after the appetizers. Every meat selection was excellent: the lamb was incredibly savory, the tibs and ground beef had a nice spicy kick, the chicken was fantastically flavorful, and the beef with clarified butter was nicely spiced. Mmmm..clarified butter.... For the veggie sides, we chose an amazing chickpea one (I wish I had noted which one it was because it was super tasty)..the carrots and green beans side and the potato side were both solid..the cold brown lentils were a bit underwhelming. No desserts on this trip as we left absolutely no room. The servers had no problem refilling our Injera bread as much as we needed. The hot loose leaf teas were great (I tried the ginger and the hibiscus). So there you have it. No utensils...use that Injera to scoop up all the deliciousness. If you've never tried Ethiopian food before, Mesob is an excellent place to start.

In my previous review, I withheld the 5th star due to customer service. I recently went back for the Saturday lunch specials and was completely blown away. First of all, nearly everything on the menu is half-priced until 3pm. If there was a difference in portion size, neither me or my stomach noticed. It was even more crowded than my first time their but service was absolutely phenomenal. They were so attentive, almost to a fault. We could barely take a bite of food without someone coming over to ask how we were enjoying our dishes. While this could be a little annoying to some, I felt it to be a massive improvement to having rushed, non-attentive service. I love this estaishment and plan on frequenting it as often as possible, although I will be going for lunch to save a few bucks!! :P

After getting lost trying to get here after a day working in my Morristown office (me + Jersey + directions = me directionless) I was very close to losing it. Losing my marbles, losing my shoe, losing...well, just losing it. Luckily my ever patient friend managed to deal with my incompetence and we finally parked our respective cars, and walked in (after sitting for 10 mins at the wrong restaurant - don't ask). So worth the mini misadventure. I love Ethiopian food - the injera, the gomen wat, the tibs - it's all good. And here at Mesob, it was all good and then some. We had the starter sampler and then a vegetarian platter, both of us hoarding our favorite items (me the timatim fitfit and he the azifa) and then eating like gluttons after a week of starvation. It was the first time he had Ethiopian food and I think he liked it. A lot. Oh, and it's BYOB. So bring a nice bottle of wine, a lot of time and you'll be fine.* I'm going back! *yes, that was a bad rhyme.

We ventured here because Ethiopian food isn't our normal diet and we were looking for something different. We did not have a reservation. So when we arrived around 6:30 on a Friday night, we were offered a table, provided we would free up the table by 8. I actually liked that the restaurant accommodated us with no reservation and was honest about the timing, rather than simply rushing us out the door. The food is flavorful and like nothing I've had before. It is not eaten with utensils, but rather a crepe-like pancake you use to grasp the food. We ordered the meat sampler for 2 and loved the beef and lamb dishes, as well as the 3 vegetable dishes that came with it. The only weak piece was the chicken, but only because cubed chicken, in my view, can't be made all that well so that it ever stands out. I just find it boring. I'd recommend the meat sampler for any beginners, like us.

I crave the food from Mesob. After moving away from my ultimate favorite Ethiopian restaurant, Dahlak, in West Philadelphia, I was looking for a replacement closer to home and I happened upon Mesob in Montclair. What a find. Perfect Injera, doro kaywat, ye'beg aletcha, misir wat, and shiro. If you have never had Ethiopian food, give this place a try.

As a vegan, there aren't a ton of dining options for me in Montclair. So I was very excited to find Mesob, and my first visit did not disappoint. My fiancé and I shared the vegetarian sampler, which was delicious. Afterward, some coffee and the vegan chocolate sampler capped off a really great meal. We visit Mesob as often as we can, and always look forward to introducing it to people who come to visit us.

I've wanted to try Mesob for a very long time now since I've heard so many good things about it from my friends. I've had very limited experience with Ethiopian food (last time was a few years ago in Philadelphia) so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. The interior is nice and fits the mood/theme of the restaurant perfectly. Very simple and clean. Just a warning: it's a small restaurant, and quite popular, so it can get loud. For appetizers, we had the kategna, which were rolls of the sour bread (injera) drenched in a spicy clarified butter. Good, but not great. I was expecting a bigger punch of flavor for the $7 appetizer which basically only consisted of the bread that they give for free during the dinner portion of the meal anyway. On that note, I did enjoy the injera, which took a bit to get used to at first given the sour nature of the flatbread. Also, spicy here is actually pretty spicy, though not unbearably so. Just a warning to those who do not like to eat spicy food. Since it was my first time, I got the meat sampler which included: tibs wat, minchet abish kay wat, minchet abish aletcha, ye'beg altecha, and doro tibs. The three vegetables we chose were the ye'shimbra assa wat, difen misir aletcha, and tikil gomen. Everything was pretty good and well seasoned, though after a while all the different flavors started to mix together. The dishes prepared with a spicy sauce started to taste alike, and the dishes prepared with a mild sauce started to taste alike. Perhaps it was a problem with ordering the sampler. There was also a problem with texture. Most of the food is very saucy and the bread is also soft, so there was not a lot of contrast in texture (especially with the ground beef entrees). The tibs wat (spicy cubed beef) and doro tibs (chicken) were my favorite meat choices. I was not as thrilled with the minchest abish kay wat and michet abish aletcha, which were both ground beef, one in a spicy sauce and one in a mild sauce. It reminded me too much of chili. I was also disappointed in the ye'shimbra assa wat, which were chick pea biscuits served in a spicy sauce. The chick pea biscuits were too dry and bitter, and left a strange aftertaste in my mouth that lingered for far too long. For dessert we tried the almond cake with berry sauce and a gelato sampler. The ice cream was delicious. Creamy, smooth, and flavorful. The almond cake was a bit dry, but it was saved by the berry sauce which was quite good. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the service. We had a 7 o'clock reservation and had to wait for about 20 minutes before being seated. Then after we ordered, it took over an hour for our appetizers to arrive. I will give them points for giving us an extra appetizer for free since they were "sorry for the wait." Still, for a Sunday night, the slow speed of service was inexcusable. Overall, I liked Mesob and will come back again, though I can't help but be a bit disappointed given the hype.

Wow the food here was excellent. May not have been a tremendous value on the meats platter for 2, but certainly wasn't a really bad deal. The food that was on the platter though was top notch. I also told the waitress I was pressed for time and she certainly came thru with quick service, a job well done!

A unique dining experience. You finally get to eat with your hands and it's acceptable! The atmosphere was great. It's as authentic (from what everyone says) as Ethiopian gets but without sitting on the floor (which would have been really cool). The couple we were there with ordered for my fiance and I. When they bring out the food it's placed in this large dish that covers 1/3 of the table. The dish is lined with their spongy thin bread which can be eaten in large quantities by itself. It has a little of a citrus taste to it. Quite delicious. They also bring out tons of extra of their bread (injera) so you are never left really using your hands. You grab a piece of the bread, clamp onto some delicious food and enjoy. Sampled (everything was excellent -- even the lamb which I normally do not like): Doro Kay Wat (Chicken), Tibs Wat (Beef), Lamb, Ingudai Tibs (portobello mushroom -- fantastic!), gomen (collard greens), difen misia aletcha (not a fan of chickpeas), shrimp tibs, dinich wat...and many more. My recommendations: beef and mushroom dishes... Service was good. No complaints. BYOB which keeps the cost down. Prices, we ordered a lot and everything was worth it. ENJOY!

    1) The meat sampler is Amazing. It is perfect dish if you go with couple of friends. Everyone will have something they will like. 2) My favorite thing about the restaurant was --they give unlimited Injera bread. Highly recommended. 3) The ambiance is nice.

When I lived in Montclair, just about every Thursday my roommate and I would stop at Merit and pick up a bottle of wine, then head to Mesob and feast. This is one of my favorite restaurants ever. Vegan and vegetarian friendly to the max, friendly service, and the best food. Get the vegetarian sampler. Make sure you get the split peas, the mushrooms, and (my personal favorite) potatoes and cabbage. If you've never been, think of Mesob as comfort food in the form of many delicious stews and spongy bread. There are enough options that you'll find something you like, even if Ethiopian is new. Oh yea. You have to eat with your hands. Does life get better?

Very nice interior. Tables were a bit small, but that made it more intimate. The host/waitress was really nice and gave us suggestions. We ended up getting the meat sampler, with the pureed chick peas, beans and carrots, and lentils. We had a blast using our hands to eat. Took some getting used to, but once your fingers get a bit messy, then might as well just go all out with the hands. The meats were all different, yet tender. Watch out for the "spicy" meats, as they are a bit spicy. The bread was a bit sour, but I think that's how it's supposed to be. If you run out of the bread, feel free to ask for more! The platter is surprisingly filling, especially because of the bread, so come hungry! We also had the ginger shai (tea). It had a mild ginger taste, but wasn't sweet enough for me, so we just added some sugar, which the waitress had already placed on the table with the tea. Maybe we'll go for the kemem shai (basically the ginger black tea + cardamom cloves and cinnamon), instead. All in all, great experience here.

This place is built up and not as good as people say. It's cool to try once and that's about it. The food seems authentic and the service is good and knows what they are talking about. However, none of the dishes stood out and I felt unsatisfied when we finished. Decent place, but I would not come again because there are much better places to go in Montclair (Ethnic or not)

We've been very lucky the last 4 years to be within walking distance of this restaurant. It has been our go to for nearly every and all celebrations and gatherings. It's always an eyebrow raiser for those who haven't expanded their palate yet. Everyone always asks what it's like. We answer, "It has your every day foods: veggies, meats and fish, but just cooked and spiced to a degree of amazing." They serve their dishes on top of a large plate of injira and when all the entrees are gone, everyone fights for the bread as it has soaked up all the wonderful flavors. We always go in large groups specifically so that we can order everything on the menu. Yes, everything. The staff are super sweet and always so attentive. I highly recommend making reservations as it can get very busy. Montclair is primarily dry town so BYO. And if you enjoy coffee, stay a little longer and order a pot. You won't regret expanding your belly just a wee bit more.

Delicious and authentic flavors. Best injira I've had yet. Portions were filling and everything was great. I deducted a star for the paltry menu options. It's nice to have a more limited menu, but if you can do something with lamb or beef, you can do it with chicken. I enjoyed what I ate, but the number of times I would come back would be limited so that I don't feel like I keep eating the same thing. Plus, if what they have is this good, then adding more would make it even better! ;)

I went here on Mothers day and at first really liked the look of the place and the people seemed nice. I was there with my wife and daughter (18months) and quickly learned it wasn't a kid friendly place. They had a hard time finding a high chair and the one they did find was broken, straps didn't hold. So I am a newbi to Ethiopian food and we expressed that to our waitress. Asked her what was popular and she told us. At that point though she didn't give us any instructions on how the food comes out. We are Vegans so we were happy that they had vegan options. So I ordered an item from the vegetables section. She told me I get two side vegetables too. I asked her what vegetables can I choose from since I didn't see any vegetables like broccoli or something. The waitress says, any of the vegetables on the menu. I am looking at my wife like, "am I missing something" and the waitress is looking at me like what don't you get? Again, nobody told us how this works. Most places I've been to ask you if you have been there before and explain what to do so you don't feel like an idiot when order. Our waitress saw that we were struggling to understand and still didn't bother to tell us that we will be getting a big piece of dough and on top of that they will put items from the Vegetable section on the big plate of "bread". So my wife and I are flying blind and the waitress still hasn't explained that what they consider to be a vegetable is any item in the Vegetable section of the menu. So after asking a couple questions I come to understand that I can get sides from the other menu items. When I ask for a couple sides that I thought looked good it was an extra charge for those. So I was like well what isn't an extra charge. She told me and by that point I was so amazed at the lack of communication that I said never mind I will just take the item I originally ordered. We also didn't understand that it would come on this huge plate of "bread" so we order so "bread" on the side. When we asked for the side "bread" the waitress said really? you want extra "bread" We had no idea that it would come out with bread, she could have told us! But I guess she saw it as an up sale and decided to keep that to herself. So the food comes out and we look at each other like what is this. We now had this big piece of "bread" and a small scoop of the item we ordered. It started to all make sense now, I was suppose to get three items on this to fill up the bread, but because our waitress couldn't communicate with us, I only got the one item. We also got a side "bread" too and now had two huge pieces of "bread" on the table for one little item of vegetables. The food was pretty good and like I said it has a good atmosphere. My rating is mostly for our experience as a newbi to Ethiopian food. Like others said, we are big Indian food fan and was also disappointed in the flavor.

We went here with a group of friends tonight, 14 people all together, a mixture of adults and older kids, the youngest was eight. The first thing that happened before we even ordered was a lecture from the waitress that there was a minimum per plate sharing charge. They couldn't have cared less if we were there or not. We ordered plenty of food, even with the kids, and it was good, but I won't return or recommend based on the poor attitude and service.

I ate here once a few months ago and it took a really long time to get our food. While we waited, we started to smell smoke and I even saw smoke coming from the back near the kitchen. I joked around saying that I hoped it wasn't our food. 45 minutes later we finally got our food and guess what, my food was burned. I don't remember what I ordered but I ordered it because it was something I had not seen at any other ethiopian restaurant... so of course I wanted to try it because I love Ethiopian food. It was something like chickpea cakes or chickpea squares something similar. Basically my dish turned out to be really thick, hard, and burned squares of chickpeas. It did not taste good. There were one or two pieces that were not black and burned that also didn't taste bad so I knew it was burned. WTF. If i were them I would of apologized for the long wait and not of served customers burnt food. I wanted to complain but by that time I was so sick of sitting in the restaurant that I just wanted to eat what was edible and leave. The rest of our food was okay though... too bad that dish and the super long wait ruined my experience.

I've eaten Ethiopian food at every city I've traveled to and this one is by far the best. The flavors are so perfectly balanced with spice and they make their own ingera so you can request gluten free ingera. The staff is incredibly kind and attentive but I will warn though that on Friday/Saturday evenings, the place gets extremely busy and you can wait quite a bit just to get a water refill or the check. If it's your first time, try to get in for an earlier time if you can swing it. Even when this is the case, I've never been given the wrong order or received poorly prepared food. My daughter who 'hates vegetables' requests eating here at least once a week and always orders (and finishes) an entire serving of the carrots and string beans (atkilt alecha). All their desserts are home made and gluten free as well. I highly recommend getting the coffee pot if you're in a group of 3+ and have a half hour to enjoy it with a dessert. It's delicious and a nice experience.

A really good food and service! Since I know the owner she creates special dishes to my taste such as egg curry. Service is really great and it is BYOB. I eat here once a month and every time is a pleasant experience. Try Ethopian coffee, server will bring you roasted beans to you for coffee aroma! Parking is difficult on weekend. Enjoy he food and hospitality.

I've tried a few Ethiopian restaurants--maybe not enough to *really* know what best-of-class is for this cuisine, but I know what I like--and Mesob is good stuff! On my first visit, I went with the Kitfo (Ethiopian steak tartare) and sides of the Atkilt Wat (seasoned green beans and carrots) and Miser Wat (spicy lentils). The food was delicious and the Injera (bread) was superb. I also tried the cardamom-spiced African black tea, also good. The place was a bit cold (being a winter afternoon with few customers and high ceilings) but the staff was warm & friendly. I definitely plan to go back!

The first time I was here a few years ago everything was perfect. From food to service to atmosphere...perfect! My boyfriend and I were in the area recently and decided to stop in. Again the atmosphere and food were wonderful. However, the service left much to be desired. Our waitress never asked us what we wanted to drink, barely spoke in an audible tone, never made eye contact and stomped around the place like she could care less. When it came time to pay and we used cash, she explained, while not once standing still to tell us, that someone had to go down stairs to get us change. About 10 minutes later she returns with our change and again without even stopping to make eye contact, she mumbled, "Sorry it took so long." When I opened to retrieve my change, I had the correct bills but was missing .50 change. Instead of dealing with her anymore, I took a dollar from her over 20% tip and left. Very disappointing service. Excellent food. We'll think twice before returning and may venture to try another Ethiopian restaurant in the area.

I was heading over to Montclair for a concert and when looking for a vegan friendly place to eat, discovered Mesob, which has many vegetarian entrees (all vegan). This was my first time having Ethiopian food and I loved it. I had no idea what to expect, but was delighted to have so many options. We started with the Ingudai Tibs, portabello mushrooms with onions, garlic and tomato and asked for it to be as spicy as possible. They brought it out with extra hot sauce stuff on the side and it was awesome. I had read that you either love or hate the bread that comes with everything, but I think the slightly sour taste was great. For dinner, we had the vegetarian sampler, which is 6 of the vegan dishes to be shared. I honestly can't remember exactly what we had, but I know we had a ton of lentil dishes (both hot and cold), a chickpea biscuit dish and one the server picked out for us. Everything was fantastic. For dessert, I had the vegan chocolate sampler (4 pretty and yummy chocolates), and a cup of the roasted to order coffee. The coffee was amazing. I will def be back here, I only wish I had discovered it earlier!

Mesob is a great restaurant, very clean, good ambience, and very friendly staff. We went their on a Saturday evening with a couple of friends, we had Lega Tibs (spicy lamb), Doro Aletecha (spicy chicken) and Doro Tibs(chicken) with dinich wat (potatoes in a spicy sauce), assa wat (chick pea biscuits in a spicy sauce), mushrooms, and lentils on the sides. Lamb was cooked perfectly, and the chicken was delicious, the gravy was nice. Their injera (bread) is good, and not overly sour. Their food is bursting with flavor and so so so good, and all the dishes were nicely prepared, served and very filling. Since the restaurant is BYOB so we picked up a 6 pack that saved us on the alcohol. The decor was amazing; lightining was a little dark but perfect for have a causal conversation with a group of friends. This is definitely a place to checkout especially if you haven't had Ethiopian food before. There are a lot of other good places around as well.

another one of those really good food, but awful service places. Note: The service issue is not due to dis-courteous staff, on the other hand the staff is very friendly. But just thoroughly incompetent to handle crowds. And this place gets crowded on most nights. We've been there 4 times now. First time was a peach. Fast service and delicious food. Next three times service was abysmal but the food awesome as always. The issue is that the servers are very slow. The menu requires time for first timers to decipher and typically each order takes 5-10 minutes to just place per table. And to add to that, the restaurant seem to be perennially under staffed in peak hour. So it took us one hour each of the last three times to get a server to stop by our table. And then another 15 minutes for the food to arrive. God save you if you order appetizers first! We just place one main course shared plate. Just don't go there hungry! Also it seems that the loudest and most agitated guest gets the waiter first. So grab one and dont let them go till they take your order. We were nice and hence had to wait for an hour each time. Much more 'opportunistic' people just made noise till they got attended to. Figure out if you want to fight the fight for some good food!!

Very highly priced for the quantity of food served. Portions are really tiny, 7.95 for a tiny cup of crembrulé. Service was slow, but the staff were friendly. Even the food was not tasty enough for the price. Butcha was the only side we liked. There are better places in the city and for better prices.

I am pretty lame when it comes to trying ethnic foods so when my wife suggested we try Mesob I definitely went thinking I'd be leaving hungry. Do not be fooled by what appears to be a small portion when they bring your food to the table. I don't know if the Injera expands in your stomach but I have never left this place feeling anything less than stuffed. I've sampled everything from the vegetarian sampler to the Tibs Wet and the herbs and spices they use are like nothing I've tasted anywhere else. But I think what I really enjoy is the overall dining experience. The servers make sure to explain how it all works for people who haven't eaten without utensils and never rush you out despite an ever growing crowd waiting outside. If you're looking to try something different than the typical pizza and Chinese in the area definitely give Mesob a shot.

Mesob is a clean, inviting place that serves well prepared food in a friendly manner. The staff are pleasant and very helpful. They are always smiling as they demonstrate a good knowledge of the menu. The food comes quickly and is very hot. Meat dishes are not greasy, and flavors are quite nice. In the last couple of years, this place has gotten very crowded in the evenings. It's unfortunate to say, but this has affected somewhat what comes out of the kitchen. Despite a dip in the quality of the food over recent years, though, this place remains a good option.

As we entered this modest yet roomy establishment a drool enticing smell wafted over us as we spoke to the hostess about our reservation. We were seated within seconds of our arrival and offered menus by the welcoming wait staff. As we situated ourselves, a waiter come to the table with a carafe of water, glasses, and a bottle opener for the cold six pack of craft beer and cider that we had brought with us, since Mesob is a BYOB establishment. The waiter opened three bottles for us and left the bottle opener at the table while we discussed the menu amongst ourselves. On the ride over, I had already discussed the possibility of ordering the Taste of Mesob, which includes 2 starters, 2 chicken dishes, 2 beef dishes, 1 lamb dish, shrimp tibs, and any 3 sides from the vegetable entrees, all for just $95.00. I know this is slightly more expensive that my normal frugal foodie finds, but it is slightly harder to find Ethiopian food in this area than it is to find burgers and ribs. The only task left was to pick which mouthwatering dishes would eventually don our plate. The Menu at Mesob is very extensive and will take quite some time to read and figure out what dish you would like to try. Try doing what we did, take your time and enjoy the soothing ambiance that is Mesob. You will hear traditional Ethiopian music playing softly in the background and see Ethiopian textiles and artwork that adorn the walls. The wait staff only added to the calming vibe with their soft spoken tones and eager willingness to help. If Mesob reflects the tranquility of the Ethiopian lifestyle, it makes perfect sense why the peaceful Rastafari movement chose this country as their spiritual homeland. Mesob was winning me over and I had not even tasted one bite of food yet. That is until the appetizers arrived. The first bite of Ethiopian food I would ever eat came in the form of Katenga. This spongy, sour, flatbread made us realize that we had waited entirely too long to embark on the magical food adventure that we were just starting. After our appetizer dishes were cleared from the table, a massive round dish covered in a gigantic piece of Injera was delivered to our table. Then another waiter brought a large serving tray occupied by petite bowls full of the entrees that we had ordered. One by one, the waiter pragmatically spooned the courses onto our Injera plate, making sure that the dishes did not mix, while explaining each dish as he moved along. What we were left with afterword was the best smelling art I have ever had the privilege to be in the company of. At first, all of us were speechless, scared to damage the beautiful canvas that our waiter had just created on our table. But our curiosity and hunger got the best of us, and we dug into this masterpiece of Ethiopian delights. I thought that some of the concoctions would taste too similar due to the comparable spice palettes within each dish, but I was happily mistaken. Each stew tasted different, yet somehow they all danced together on my tongue like a finely tuned chorus line of yumminess. As we tried each and every dish, it seemed that the last one we ate was our favorite until we tasted the next one. Every bite brought new and exciting flavors and none of us could stop eating long enough to speak. I could attempt to describe all the fantastic food that we shared that night at Mesob and smack your brain with a laundry list of adjectives for each creation that was expertly prepared by the Mesob Chefs, but I won't. Instead I will tell you that this foodie voyage is exactly why I love food so much. I most likely will never have the opportunity to explore Ethiopia but thanks to the delightful people at Mesob, I can experience at least a piece of their culture one scrumptious bite at a time, and I assure you each bite is delectable.

THIS PLACE IS WILD!!! This is a giant highchair for adults. Before you, is set forth a bunch of slop - and you pick it all up with this injera bread which is delicious all by itself.. Ethiopian food, cannot really be explained, it needs to be experienced. For $60 I shared a meat platter and veggie platter for 2. So all together it's 8 veggies which was like a red and green lentils, cabbage, potato, collard greens, meat and some other yummy messy stuff. All seasoned to perfection. I also had 2 awesome apps. a lentil pastry puff, and this marinated portobello mushroom dish which was huge and AGAIN, AWESOME! The lentil puffs were great, but only 3 come :( I hate when things come in odd numbers. Regardless it was awesome. plus an ice tea and a bottle of pellegrino. for $60 in montclair, saturday night, come on!! That's a great price! + It's BYOB! That's fantastic. If you are going to come here, come with someone you love and trust, that doesn't skeeve you out - because if you are sharing a platter, that means you are sharing a platter. Otherwise I highly recommend ordering your own dishes. Don't expect utensils - your bread is your fork. We had 1 spoon on our table and that was for the mushroom appetizer, which left with the cleaning of the apps. Test this place out, you will enjoy yourself - you will get messy, and you will have a really fun time experiencing Ethiopian food at Mesob!

Alhough the Ethiopian cuisine at Mesob originated in a country thousands and thousands of miles from where I grew up, the food has such an earthy, homemade feel that I dare call it "comfort food". The casual nature of eating with your hands breaks down any boundaries between you and your fellow diners. Everything at Mesob is just comfortable. I love the energy at this restaurant. The waitstaff is helpful, friendly, and very willing to help you figure out what to order. The sight of a large plate of injera (the crepe-like bread) coming toward a table is quite a novelty. Your waiter or waitress will spoon whatever it is you ordered over the injera, and someone is always walking around with extra injera! Mesob also has a very large selection of vegan entrees, samplers, and even desserts. We tried the wheatless, flourless, eggless, and butterless cookies to end our vegetarian sampler meal. What could possibly be good about such a cookie? Well, the oatmeal raisin flavor - made from flax, oats, and nuts, was wholesome and surprisingly satisfying.

We decided to come here for date night and had a great time! The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxing and romantic. Now the food, oh my goodness, the food was amazing! I had never had Ethiopian cuisine before tonight, so many delicious flavors! Being gluten free and dairy free here was not a problem. They even made us special gluten free bread that was full of flavor! We had the Buticha for an appetizer, it was perfect and zesty! we shared lega tibs and doro tibs for our entree with cabbage, lentils, carrots and green beans. Everything had it own distinct flavor, I loved it all!!!!

Overall experience was delightful. Two of us had our first Ethiopian experience at Mesob. Together we had the doro aletcha (chicken legs) and an order of lamb pieces. Definitely be aware of the spiciness of the dish you order because I could barely handle myself. The only complaint was that despite the fact that we made reservations that evening we had to wait. Halfway through our meal we were asked to move from our seats to accommodate a larger table. The manner in which we were "told" and not "asked" to move was rude. We were given a free dessert after making a minor complaint.

This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in the area... I've also been to Queen of Sheba in NYC and Makeda in New Brunswick, NJ. Mesob takes the cake!!! The wait staff is so friendly and they make awesome suggestions on what to order. I always get the Taste of Mesob since I can never decide on just one dish! The food is delish! I'm looking forward to going there in 2 weeks for my birthday!

My boyfriend and I just adore Ethiopian cuisine. So, we have a few favorite spots - locally, Harrar Cafe in South Orange is our go-to. But I had read reviews of this place and wanted to give it a try. Service was warm, prompt, and welcoming, contrary to what many Yelpers say...the food was our issue. It's not bad food, but certainly not the best. The entire time we talked about how other places have better injera and tastier veggies. Also, their spicy tea tasted like Lipton's. I would recommend this place though if you find yourself in Montclair craving Ethiopian. Otherwise, go to South Orange or NYC.

The food was really good but this restaurant gets an okay because the service was not that great. I had the Veggie Medley dish and really enjoyed it. I also liked that they had Vegan desserts on the menus. I would stay away from the veggie appetizers as I did not enjoy them and many of them are cold. I went with a group and we had a reservation but ran late due to rain and logistics. They were not very happy with us even though we called ahead to let them know of our delay. They don't serve liquor but they do allow you to bring your own just be mindful that they have a bottle opening charge.

I liked this place! I heard so much about from fellow yelpers and decided to give it a try. When I "checked in" on the Yelp app, I was told that I got a free appetizer. We asked for the katenga and they were weary to accept the coupon. In the end, they didn't, but that's okay. I liked the katenga, but it wasn't wowing me. I think I was expecting an Indian roti, but katenga is somewhat sour like a thin sourdough rubbed with spices. It was good, but I'm not sure if I would order it again. Since I've never had Ethiopian food, I asked the waiter what his favorite (vegetarian) plates were. So, taking his advice, I got the misir wat, gomen, and dinich wat. The misir wat was great! I loved it! i actually couldn't even finish because the katenga was SO filling. The katenga and injera (the "crepe" that is your utensil) are very spongy and filled me up super fast; I was kind of bummed that I couldn't finish! The gomen and dinish wat were... okay. Again, they didn't wow me like the misir wat. The gomen was actually a little undercooked. All in all, Mesob was good! I wasn't wowed like most of the reviews for this restaruant, but I most likely will come back again. I just have to go with a very empty stomach.

This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant ever (so far). The staff here is very friendly and welcoming, and the ambience is casual and intimate. Their injera is not overly sour; I've been to a few places where it was just too sour and it tasted gross. Their food is bursting with flavor and so so so good. The Ethiopian meal for two on their menu is a really good deal; definitely go for that if it's your first time there. Don't be afraid to try Ethiopian if you've never been, unless you like really bland, boring food. If you're into big flavors and fun experiences, you will definitely LOVE it.

Worth checking out! My first experience with Ethiopian cuisine, and it was a very good one. It was certainly very different from anything I've ever tried, although some dishes were familiar from other types of cuisines. I'm not sure it will ever become a go-to, but we enjoyed our dinner. The menu is a little different from the one posted on line, but the website version will at least give you an idea of the dishes available. Eating with your hands and the injera feels primitive, but I think it's pretty easy to get over that and enjoy as it is completely appropriate for the cuisine and is not at all crude. If it's your first time as well, get the "A Taste of Mesob" sampler platter. It gives you the chance to try a lot of stuff - and what I would have ordered if I had gotten an entree was not something I would order again. The sampler allows you to try 2 appetizers, 2 chicken dishes, 2 beef dishes, 1 lamb dish, shrimp tibs, and 3 vegetarian selections. Everything is served in a huge dish over sheets of injera, which is the "bread" that comes with everything. You get a small bowl of each selection, which is poured onto the injera tableside, making a cool presentation. Injera is served with everything. It serves as both your bread and your utensils. It's almost like a sour, extremely spongy version of a tortilla... if that makes any sense. The sour flavor is not overwhelming, but it is absolutely present. I thought it would be closer to naan, but it's not close to anything I've ever had before. Here's what we tried (about half the menu), and my thoughts on each (asterisks denote my recommendations) : Ayib bemitmita - farmer's cheese. Really nice, mild flavor, and the chili powder kicks it up a notch. The cheese pairs well with just about everything. Katenga - injera with spices. Even prepared mild, this had a bite! The bf enjoyed this more than I did. *Minchet abit kay wat - minced beef dish. One of my favs! Good flavor (even though it didn't look that appetizing), soaked up well by the injera. Minchet abish alecha - beef tartare. It was a bit bland - needed something (and the farmer's cheese wasn't enough). This would be off-putting to most people. They will prepare it cooked upon request. Ye'beg aletcha - lamb dish in a somewhat tomato-based sauce. I wasn't really a fan, although this was precisely what I would have ordered off the menu. I thought the lamb was a bit dry. It was just okay. *Doro aletcha - chicken legs in a mild sauce. Delicious! The sauce was special - it may sound gross but it was almost gelatinous, and the chicken was tender and yummy. I never would have ordered this without the sampler, but it was wonderful. Doro tibs - chicken chunks in a mild sauce. I wouldn't recommend this - the chicken was dry and tough - just not enjoyable. Shrimp tibs - I couldn't try this due to my allergies, but he really enjoyed it. Shrimp was paired with almost a salsa-like sauce. **Ingudai tibs - portobello mushroom dish. This was the best! A MUST order! Dinich wat - potatoes in a sauce - no good. The sauce was not great, the potatoes slightly undercooked. Buticha - pureed chick peas (with texture - not like hummus). Just okay - he enjoyed it more than I did. Reminded me a bit of tabbouleh. Service was really great, although quite slow at times. Prepare for a lengthy, pleasant meal. We left satiated but not stuffed. The restaurant was LOUD - high ceilings, noise bouncing everywhere. The noise almost seemed appropriate for the type of venue though. However, tables were huge to accommodate the size of the dishes, and seats were really comfortable. Not a romantic restaurant, but good for fun out with friends. Warning - DO NOT check in on Yelp if you get the sampler platter... after I already checked in, the waitress (wisely) advised against using the check in free appetizer offer. While she was right, I think I'll be precluded from using it next time. With 3 drinks (refills on soda are not free), the bill came to $93 with tip for the 2 of us. BYOB.

I SOOO wish I enjoyed the food at Mesob. So many people have spoken highly of it that I couldn't wait to have my first Ethiopian culinary experience, however, I was extremely disappointed with my experience. To put it bluntly, the food was bland. I went for lunch with my mom and shared the entree sampler that included 5 different meats and 3 vegetarian options hoping to try a little bit of everything. We also shared the farmer's cheese (thanks to Yelp's free check-in offer) as an appetizer. Again, we were looking for a taste that would differentiate it from other ethnic cuisines, but we were surprised to find that the taste was practically non-existent The injera (their version of bread) is a bit sour (but that should be expected especially since it is fermented for about a day or two) and is used as the side for all dishes. In fact, the injera is what is used to scoop up your meal when torn into small pieces as there are no knives, forks, or spoons. And the meats that were supposed to be super spicy simply weren't. Props to the owners for opening a restaurant offering cuisine that isn't offered in many cities, however, you may want to try another restaurant if you're looking to drop some major cash.

Solid 4 stars for good albeit unusual food, good service and a unique atmosphere. If I offend anybody with the following statement, I apologize but I have to be honest: When I think Ethiopia, the first image that pops into my head is one of those old commercials on TV where an emaciated kid stands next to a rather plump Sally Struthers who then proceeds to beg for money to feed hungry kids. I mean the irony here is obvious, a poor starving kid who probably hasn't eaten for a week next to a woman who eats a week's worth of food in one sitting. It's sad and tragic to be sure. So Ethiopian and Cuisine in the same sentence seemed like Oil and water to me. I' m thinking third world diet of rice and water. Wow, was I wrong and profoundly ignorant. This restaurant had piqued me curiosity for a while now, one of those places that was on the "Must try list" of unusual gastronomic adventures so I could tell people that I "tried Ethiopian". It was one of the most unusual and interesting culinary experiences I've ever had. This is High-end finger food. You definitely won't feel guilty here about eating with your hands: Here's the Breakdown: Food: 4 stars. We shared the Mesob Special in which we basically sampled a whole bunch of dishes (This is a must the first time you go here.) Sort of like Ethiopian Tapas but larger. We had so much food I can't fully describe it all so here is a sample of the samples: Appetizer: Najera: The staple dish of Ethiopian food. Hard to describe. Najera is basically fermented sourdough sponge bread which goes through a LONG process to make as we discovered. You literally can stretch it like an accordion. It's tasty and is basically a blank slate through which one picks up the entrees. Oh I almost forgot, there are no Utensils. You rip a piece of bread and you use it to pick up your chicken or lamb or whatever. It's like being a kid again Ayib bemitmita: Farmers Cheese: Very tasty. A cross between Ricotta and goat Cheese but with less salt. We had it with chili powder. It definitely goes well with the cheese. Extremely Fresh Entrees: Shrimp tibs: I had a Spicy shrimp with a sauce that could be best described as "Ethiopian Salsa". They use a lot of Tomatoes in Ethiopian food. Good dish which I enjoyed. Shrimp were tender and the sauce while spicy was balanced. Chicken :Doro aletcha: The Chicken leg was extremely tender and delicious. The sauce that came with it tasted like onion marmalade. Had a sweet, earthy texture which went well with the chicken. Excellent Dish. Doro tibs: The cubed chicken was good. Chicken was a little dry but the sauce made up for it. Came in a tomato sauce but was a little plain. Beef: Minchet abish alecha: beef Tartare I don't eat Tartare. Sorry! No comment Minchet abit kay wat - Minced beef dish: Ground beef was very tasty. Sort of an Ethiopian Sloppy Joe. The cumin added a nice kick to the beef. Excellent dish Lamb: Ye'beg aletcha: Basically Lamb in a tomato sauce Lamb dish was good. I liked that they gave us boneless and on the bone lamb. Lamb was tender but sauce was a little too gelatinous. Good dish but could have been better. Buticha - pureed chick peas: The chickpeas were delicious. They used a good amount of lemon which added a nice tartness to the chickpeas along with the cilantro and onions. Had the texture of couscous. Great dish. Dinich wat: The potatoes were the only dish that was just awful. Potatoes were ok but the sauce that went with it was insipid. Tasted like molasses paste and didn't go with the potatoes. Ingudai tibs - portobello mushroom dish: The Portabella mushrooms were OUTSTANDING! Probably the best dish we had. Seasoned perfectly and were impeccably fresh. Very minimalist with this dish. Basically a little Olive Oil and some spices. It's a must try! Service: 4 Stars: Service was friendly, courteous and most importantly non-obtrusive. They really have pride in the restaurant and will explain dishes if you ask. However the service can be slow at times. Atmosphere: 4 stars you wouldn't normally put Ethiopian and trendy together but it is a trendy restaurant. Light earth tone colors, high ceilings and African paintings give the place a distinct look. I really liked the oversized dinner tables which made sense considering the presentation of the food required a large surface. The restaurant however is very noisy. Conclusion: This is a place you must go to once in your life for not only the food but the whole experience. I gained an appreciation and understanding of a new cuisine while at the same time had a good meal. While this isn't a go to spot for me, it's definitely a place I would recommend. Be prepared for get your hands dirty.

We got the meat sampler with split lentils, collard greens, and mushroom....SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD. Seriously I left this place very happy. I been to a few ethiopian restaurant and this place is one of the best I been to. I will def be coming back soon.

We went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We got the vegetarian combo for two, as well as a cup of Ethiopian coffee. The food was good, however nothing standout compared to other Ethiopian restaurants we've tried in the NYC area. The service was slow, but helpful when selecting the items for the meal. Injera was good, having that tanginess it's supposed to have without an overwhelming fermented flavor. Very good. Coffee was alright, yet I expected something more intense. The decor and atmosphere was open, decorated nicely (minus the tacky table tent type things), although the place was very loud. Great for lunch, but intimate chatty dinners...you may want to go elsewhere as you'll have trouble communicating with all the noise. Just OK.

Do yourself a favor, and drive 5 miles over to Lalibela in South Orange. You won't get the same atmosphere, but you will get food that is much more authentic and affordable than at Mesob. That's not to say that the food at Mesob is bad - it's fine. But a little overrated. You can even ask my friend who is from Ethiopia - he didn't know authentic Ethiopian food existed in Jersey till we went to Lalibela. We plan on going back shortly. Mesob is your typical "date" restaurant in Montclair. Aesthetically, the restaurant is pretty upscale and decorated nicely, and the waiters are helpful in explaining how to eat the cuisine if you're a novice. And the location is nice too - right smack in the downtown area, so there's plenty to do and see once you've finished your meal. But again, I feel there's way too much hype about this place.

I just wanted to update my review. We still have not found a place to supplant this as "best" restaurant in area. Great food, excellent service.

Extremely well-balanced injera. While this place serves delicious meat dishes, its vegetarian dishes are very satisfying in taste, texture, and options. I suggest ordering a variety. Mesob's entrees lend themselves well to great family-style dining.

The food is authentic and fresh!! My 1st time here and I loved it. Once you get pass the food texture you can taste the full flavors! We had the meat sampler with 3 veggies!! The spicy beef tibs and the mushroom was our favorite!!

Ethiopian food is so, so yummy. Another wonderful outlet for vegetarians to bask in some seriously uplifting food, aside from the usual eggplant-pasta-o-rama that is most other places. The best part about Mesob & other Ethiopian places is the communal, fun feeling of the meal. I went with my boyfriend and two other friends and had a lot of fun diving in to a giant platter sized plate of injera bread covered in all our dishes. We shared, and gushed over most the food together. It was different, new, exciting, something to do as a night out. We also got a free appetizer via checking in at Yelp and showing our server, which was great & convenient. I ordered the dish that consisted of carrots and green beans which was good. With all the entrees, you get two more side dishes so I also got some potatoes & cabbage (my favorite) and chickpea fritters. Another dish I enjoyed was some sort of lentils my friend ordered. While my review on the food leads to what was mostly a good experience, it was both the service & a price communication that leaves me with a bit of disappointment. First, very slow service - we were there at least two hours. Further, I wasn't warned about a $3 charge for certain side dishes - such as the chickpea fritters. When my server asked for my sides I chose the dish and then she didn't even mention this difference in price to me, as I was under the impression it was inclusive... I know it was stated on the menu, but at that moment, I believe it would be good for her to point these aspects out rather than simply ask me, "what side dishes do you choose?" then walk away. I think it's a joint fault, but I still felt somewhat bummed by this. Overall, a fun experience but at a steep price. I think it's definitely a one-time deal.

These place offers a wide variety of vegetarian options, but the service is horrible. On a Saturday lunch time, there were only two staffers and it was busy. They should consider hiring more employees especially on weekends. We waited so long that we were there for more than two hours. The food was good and they offer vegan chocolates and cookies, which we ordered and took home because we were tired of the poor service.

We've had dinner here a few times and have loved it every time. We usually get the meat platter which comes with 5 different kinds of meat and 3 vegetarian dishes. I recommend the collard greens and portobello mushrooms - they cost extra but are really good. The service here is a little too laid-back but they are very friendly. It's a nice spot to go with a group of people. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Montclair.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! If you're bored of the usual dinner fare, consider trying this. If you love food that is full of flavor and spices, this is just for you. I love the chicken and shrimp tibs, and pretty much all the veggie dishes. Be prepared to eat with your hands..no worries though, they give hand wipes before and after your meal. It's super fun sharing with someone and the best part is all the flavor soaked into the injera (their bread) at the end. It is a little on the pricey side, but it's worth the experience!

We are Ethiopian food connoisseurs and it ranks as our favorite cuisine. It all started by Katie being the first person to eat at a small place in Bayonne that since closed. Since then, no matter where we are traveling (We even had Ethiopian food in Amsterdam!!), we always seek out Ethiopian food. We lived in Denver and that got us to understand the difference between good and bad food, injara (the bread used to eat) etc. Now we live in the shadow of NYC which has some sick places all over from downtown to Harlem Out of every Ethiopian restaurant we have eaten at Mesob is our favorite. It is by far the cleanest and healthiest. All of their vegetarian dishes are prepared vegan without the use of any animal products. Their bread is what every other bread gets compared to. The sour smell, the texture....nothing beats it. We always get the vegetarian sampler for 2. Our staples are Misir Wat, Kik Alecha, Bucha and the Y'sembra Asha. When we introduce people to this type of food, we always go to Mesob. We like it so much that it is hard to try out other places in Montclair because we gravitate towards them. Staff is all family related and super nice. Stay for coffee or Kemem Chai....they even have Vegan desserts. Cant wait to 'go to here' this weekend. *I wanted to add that Denver has a large population of Ethiopians and Ethiopian restaurants..hence the reason for mentioning it.....

Wow! This place is amazing. The food was perfect. Shared the meat and veggie platter with a friend. Although it is a bit expensive, it is absolutely delicious! Not to mention the platter is huge so you will get to enjoy left overs the next day. The owner came out to great us. She was a very nice woman! Great, authentic Ethiopian and its BYOB. Can't lose!

The best Ethiopian food I've ever tried!! And I've tried at least 5!!! The injera bread is like lace! It's soft and thin and perfectly fermented!!! The ambiance is very nice and service is perfect!!! Love this place! I wish I lived closer! Or maybe not, because I always eat too much when i come here!!!

Food is ok and Terrible service. Bathroom is dingy. Waitress brought a wrong meal and blamed us for it. I will not go back again. Go to Lalibela in South Orange. Their food and service is much better.

This was my first time havin Ethiopian food and I was not disappointed. I got the meat sampler option and had several different lamb beef, chicken and vegetarian curries. Coffee was great. BYOB and portions are normal. Options for all diets are available.

AMAZING!!! I'm embarrassed to admit that this was my first time eating Ethiopian food... I'm a fan! I had the vegetarian/vegan sampler - such wonderful flavors! and that injera bread! Delicious! My absolute favorite part of my meal was the Ye'Shimbra Assa Wat - described as chickpea biscuits in spicy sauce. Wow... If you love heavily spiced foods - you have to give this place a try :) Service was super friendly as well...

I had Ethiopian food with some coworkers a few years ago and have been encouraging my husband to try it ever since. We had tried to eat at Mesob a few months ago but the place was packed. So we tried it again last night (Wednesday) and although there were several parties eating dinner, there were plenty of tables available. The service was great. We immediately received a large pitcher of cold water, and the waiter opened our wine for us (we love BYOBs!). I read some Yelp reviews saying that a Yelp check-in will get you a free appetizer, so I checked in and we selected the Ingudai Tibs (marinated sauteed mushrooms). The waitress brought over a small bowl of it within a few minutes, along with some small rolled-up strips of the injera bread. The mushrooms were really tasty. For our entree, we selected the Meat Sampler for Two: tibs wat (beef), minchet abish kay wat (beef), minchet abish aletcha (beef), ye'beg aletcha (lamb), doro tibs (chicken). I don't remember which beef was which, but there were two servings of ground beef in sauce - one mild, one spicy (the consistency and taste reminded us a little of hot dog chili), and a serving of spicy cubed beef. The lamb was my favorite meat - I accidentally grabbed a small piece containing a bone on my first helping, but the rest was boneless - very tender and tasty. The chicken was good, too. For our three vegetable sides, we selected the Difen Misir Aletcha (mild brown lentils), Gomen (collard greens), and Dinich Wat (very spicy cubed potatoes in sauce). Everything was really tasty, and the waitstaff checked on us a few times to ask how we were enjoying the food, and also to offer us more injera refills. They had some background music playing, then suddenly turned up the volume and played Happy Birthday while they brought someone a dessert with a candle, which I thought was cute. We were REALLY full and still had some leftovers that they packed up for us to take home, so we declined dessert (although the dessert menu looked really good, and I'm sure the Ethiopian coffee is wonderful as well). The final bill with tip was about $55, which we felt was well worth it. Good food, great service, generous portions. I'll gladly come back.

Great Ethiopian food experience. Do make a reservation for the place if you're going on weekends. And its BYOB, including beers. Even if you don't bring anything, there's a wines and spirits shop right around the corner. We were a party for 6. We tried the vegetarian sampler, and took samples of all the 12 vegetarian dishes. The experience of eating out of a common dish and sharing breads with fellow diners was a great one. The food is amazing too. The server will explain in detail what each one is. The quantity was good too for the 6 of us. Do not forget to check-in on Yelp for a free appetizer.

What can I say - this is one of my all time favorite restaurants in Montclair, NJ. The service is great and the food is even better. My fiance and I always order the vegetarian for two (6 items) and it is our favorite. If you're looking for a bargain, go there during lunch! It is such a deal.

I am a huge ethiopian fan in general, and Mesob did not disappoint. They are not very receptive to large groups, but we managed to scrounge together a table for 10. We ordered a meat sampler for 6 and a veggie sampler for 2 (which was mroe than enough for the 10 of us) and just told the waiter to choose for us with a few mild options - all were very good! I don't know the names of anything since it was just brought out, and we did not receive a full explanation - but the spicy beef chunks, lentil side, mild ground beef, potatoes with cabbage, greenbeans and carrots were all delicious! Chicken and lamp were so-so (though another member of the group loved the chicken).

The injera is so good and thankfully comes with refills! Highly recommend the cheese appetizer and lamb tibs. Each entree comes with two vegetarian sides, which is definitely great if you're not quite sure which flavors you'll like.

How the mighty have fallen. Mesob used to be the center of a great Ethiopian restaurant empire, its dominion unquestioned and unchallenged as a Montclair restaurant linchpin. And yea, as the gluten-free craze (yes, I mean the people who believe a gluten-free diet is a good thing even if you don't have celiac or one of the other severe gluten allergies or intolerances) has spread, Mesob has rode it and thrown on the vegan angle that is such a big deal. (Homo sapiens is an omnivore, people, and there's a reason iron is hard to come by in vegan diets - enjoy meat, you're meant to eat it by evolution!) Well, we went after going to Lalibela in South Orange, and you know what? Mesob is not that good anymore. Okay, the quality of the food is still good, but the portions have shrunk to fine-dining proportions. It used to be at Mesob that you just ordered whatever dishes you want, but now they do veggie sides with entrees. What they don't say is that the veggie sides are done by about 1/4-1/2 cup. We ordered the brown lentils, collard greens, mashed yellow peas, and green beans/carrots as sides. They were just a few bites worth of each. The mains were normal sized, sure, but it was a pretty dang visible stinginess. I get it. In Today's Economy (damn, I can't wait to read the history books on this period when we get into the 2030s) they need to find some way to keep prices down to keep customers happy while maintaining the business. But dammit, there's no reason to go to Mesob anymore unless you live in Montclair and it's easy for you to walk or park. Lalibela, for around the same price, stuffed us like pigs and had a bit broader menu, too. I guess Mesob is now a date-night place for relationships that aren't yet firmly at the steady-dating phase. "Hey, listen, there's this great place. Really nice atmosphere. We should check it out. It's really cool, you feed each other using spongy tart flat bread. And since we're both pseudo-globalist hipsters with a foodie bent, it's right up our alley." The dessert menu is pretty forgettable - basic stuff and a nifty halwah, but nothing you can't get in South Paterson for better price. If you want really, really good Ethiopian food, Mesob is okay as your first place - but Lalibela could, and SHOULD, be your new go-to. Don't let the terrible website fool you.

Beautiful atmosphere! Great options for non injera fans like rice or pasta. Descriptive menu for Ethiopian food newbies, which makes the experience less intimidating! Byob-always cool! 20 min wait just to get menus. 45 minutes+ for our food (which is totally unjustified for Ethiopian food). While they did bring water right away, we asked for a refill carafe 10 minutes into being seated and received one only after the end of our meal. TINY TINY PORTIONS on the Vegetarian Sampler. Not rude service, lots of smiles with indifferent service at best. We've been here many times before but after many attempts to fall in love, this'll be our last. Hate to do it buuuut, I'll stay with the tried and true Lalibella in South Orange. All around better food, service and portions there. But again, Mesob is certainly a more chic atmosphere which you'll have PLENTY of time to enjoy!

I've eaten here three times now. Each time has been absolutely wonderful. The food is fresh and tasty. The selections are all pretty exotic, so you get a change of pace. The service is professional and courteous. It's everything you could want in an enjoyable night out. Great food and nice ambiance.

We went to Mesob on a Tuesday evening. Making reservations on Open Table makes it easy. We were met at the door by a friendly woman who offered us a choice of seating. Always nice to have a choice! The decor was in keeping with its cuisine, with pretty African Art adorning the walls and a center island. The dining room had multiple warm textures - bare brick, raffia, and textiles. The lighting was at a perfect level. I immediately felt comfortable there. On to the food: I was eager to try Ethiopian cuisine, as I don't get a lot of opportunity to experience it, and I love bold flavors. We started with a vegetarian sampler appetizer. We received dishes of sauteed mushrooms, brown lentils, some crushed chick peas and farmer's cheese. It is all served with rolled up pieces of their unique, spongy, soft brown bread (which you use as a "utensil." At Mesob, you don't use a fork...that's part of the fun and experience.) The waitress asked us what we preferred for "spice level." We said Medium to start. For Entrees, we picked a Portabello Mushroom dish, Ingudai Tibs, and a Chicken dish, Doro Kay Wat. Each came with two sides. The Mushroom dish was good, but the chicken was OUTSTANDING. The spicing on it was amazing and tasty. I would go back and order 2 of these! We ordered Ethiopian coffee (fabulous), and an order of oatmeal cookies for a light dessert. Mesob is BYOB, so we brought a white wine with us. It was perfect with the spicy, unique and delicious cuisine. Overall, this is a great place - ambiance, decor, service and food. I would definitely return, and I would recommend this to friends and family.

I LOVE MESOB!!! Have been there a bunch of times. The vegetarian sampler is phenomenal!! I was there a couple of weeks ago with 1 friend & am going again tomorrow! Can't wait! The vegan chocolates are also delicious. The ambience is very nice and the waitresses have always been lovely. I only wish it was right in my town!

I recommend the meat sampler if it's your first time. Everything we ordered was flavorful and quite an experience. Now, i know you don't go to a restaurant just for their coffee...but it was the best coffee I ever had!!!!

Ironically, given the name of the restaurant, there isn't a single mesob in the dining area. Nonetheless, it was a delightful dining experience and well worth the pilgrimage to Montclair. The food is delicious. The menu is vegan-friendly, and if you call ahead to alert them, gluten-free-friendly too. One person in our large party avoids gluten, and even though she hadn't called ahead, they easily accommodated her. The only item she couldn't have was injera, which they'll prepare differently if they have advance notice. She had rice instead. By the way, carnivorous diners needn't fear. There are plenty of delectable meat dishes to devour on the menu too. If it's your first time eating Ethiopian food, I would recommend getting either the meat or vegetarian sampler with tibs as one of your choices. The collard greens are tasty as are the red lentils. Those were my personal favorites, but pretty much everything we ordered was great. Service is attentive and the staff, who are Eritrean, were all very pleasant and helpful. Ambience is good. The bathroom was clean and tastefully decorated. They are conveniently located on a busy street. If you can't find street parking, there's a garage around the corner.

Such a great alternative to the usual fare. Really delish. It's a quaint little place. The servings are deceiving, you get a lot of food. If it's your first time going, I would suggest getting the Taste of Mesob sampler. It's a perfect amount for two people. They have an option for four people as well. I wouldn't go here if you are in a rush or just want a quick bite. Much of the food is made to order so it take a little longer than most places. Well worth it though! Don't forget to make a reservation if you go with a party bigger than two. Sometimes they have a wait even for just two people.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant for some time and finally went for my birthday last Saturday night. My fiance and I really enjoyed the different dishes and the entire experience of eating with your hands. We got the appetizer sampler and then I got the vegetarian sampler and he ordered the meat sampler for our entrees. It gave us a great chance to experience all sort of different dishes to determine what we really liked for next time. The mushrooms were phenomenal and we loved the lamb! The staff was also so helpful and guided us as this was our first time eating Ethiopian. All in all, fun and delicious! Also, BYOB never hurts! Love that!

Great service, and VERY GOOD Ethiopian food. I've had better Ethiopian food in the past, but Mesob's food is high quality and tasty! The only drawback is that the place is very large (almost has a warehouse feel) and does not feel cozy which makes it difficult to enjoy for several hours.

With many reviews citing the bold and spicy flavors I was expecting something along the lines of Indian.....do not go in here thinking Indian you will be disappointed. We ordered: The Starter Sampler (for two), Meat Sampler (for two), two coffees, and the Mesob Vegan Dark Chocolates sampler. The highlight of the Starter Sampler was the mushrooms. There was nothing exceptional about them they simply had the best flavor. The farmers cheese was good but there was no hint of chili powder. The lentils were okay but you never got the "jalapeno" hit. Chickpeas were the most disappointing as they lacked any real flavor. My girlfriend and I were torn on the Timatim Fitfit (which is chopped Injera). I get her point which was why do you want to fill up on Injera that your dipping into ground up Injera...but I thought it was the third best app (behind the farmers cheese). The Meat Sampler was fine. I remember we had two beef dishes that were the consistency of ground taco beef. One was supposed to be spicy the other not. One was darker then the other...I assume that was the spicier one we couldn't taste a difference. The lamb was very lamby (if you know what I mean). I probably enjoyed this the most my girlfriend was not a fan due to the gaminess. The chicken was okay. My girlfriend enjoyed the third beef dish the best (my 2nd fav) probably due to texture is was more chunky and not ground (however still not much different in overall flavor). I don't recall our vegetarian options other than the collard greens which were very bland. Chocolate sampler is a sampling of four (VERY TINY) vegan chocolates was okay, in flavor, but certainly not worth the $8.00 price tag esp. since the differences in the candies are so subtle. We also had two cups of Ethiopian coffee. Due to the length of service (and it does take a long time) we decided to just order cups and not the Bunna (a pot for your table which takes 20 minutes to brew). The coffee was very tasty but (again) not worth the price ($3.50 for a espresso shot sized "cup"). All in all in was a good experience. Others have commented negatively about people calling out the price due to the experience....and I'm torn. I will say for a meal with no drinks (alcohol; they're BYOB) ordered this was pricy. I'll also say the quantity (and quality) of food for the price is also lacking...however, we did leave quite full.... I hope that makes sense. The restaurant is quite nice. Good ambiance. Yes, it is a decent/different experience and yes the service is slow. Servers ranged from nice to impersonable. I would come back but I'd be interested in trying a different Ethiopian restaurant for comparison purposes first.

We are vegetarians and the food here is amazing!!! We have gone here twice and everytime we leave so happy. The food is the best Ethiopian food I have ever had. My husband have had Ethiopian food in NYC, Columbus, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan, Philadelphia and Washington DC and other places in NJ and this place is the best. The owners are very kind and generous and the story behind the place is great. The kale is amazing there. So are the red lentils. I love this place! Don't forget to bring wine. This place is BYOB. You should definitely make reservations. There is a parking deck across the street where you can park- not expensive at all.

I went to school in this area, and everyone always raved about it. I finally had the chance to experience this place with a friend of mine! I had her order for us, I would say the spicy beef is my favorite, and if I could I would have just had the injera (fermented spongey bread) covered in that! They bring out a large platter with injera and the different toppings that you chose, on top. We had lamb, beef, chicken, lentils, in different sauces. They give you a plate with smaller pieces of injera that you use to scoop up the different meats and veggies with your hands! Love that part! As I said, the spicy beef was my favorite, so next time I think I will just have them bring me a ton of that and lentils. We also shared their flour-less chocolate torte. O.M.G. it was to die for! The service was VERY slow. I think they kind of forgot about us. It took them for what felt like forever, to bring out our food. And when it came time to get the check, my friend actually went up there and asked for it. Otherwise, it was absolutely delicious and I will definitely be back. Especially to try this famous brunch I see so many people posting about!

This place is great for a group of friends or even a romantic dinner. The softlight ambience is a great setting. Foodwise- the thing that impressed me the most is the huge selection for vegetarian / vegan dishes. The food is a perfect combination of spices, flavor and color. The staff is great and friendly. Being a little bit on the expensive side, it is worth every dollar spent. The icing on the cake- BYOB. I definitely recommend this place

I'm going to say my sister & myself have been eating at Mesob for quite sometime. We would do the Sunday brunch at the end of each month. The food is so good. I wish we could give ten stars for the food & staff. The staff is beautiful, friendly they make us feel welcome each time we visit. We feel like family.

I came here to celebrate a birthday with my family, and we had a great time! We ordered the taste of Mesob for 4. There were 5 of us, but it was more than enough food! The food was great, and with the sampler meal we were able to taste pretty much everything. The meat was extremely tender and flavorful, and the vegetable dishes were just as good as the meat dishes. The service is extremely friendly and helpful - our waitress pointed out her favorite dishes to help us decide. Mesob is BYOB, and as soon as we arrived they brought out wine glasses and an ice bucket for us, and sent someone over to open up the bottles. Now that's what I call having your priorities in order! Be warned that the space can get very loud. When we first arrived there were a lot of families with small children, and by the time we left the restaurant had filled up with a more adult crowd, but at all times it was rather hard to talk across table due to the noise. The waitress even had a hard time hearing us because of the noise.

Ok. So first let me start by saying that this is my first review and that I had zero expectations when trying out this restaurant which claims to serve authentic Ethiopian cuisine. My date and I arrived around 8 o'clock on a Wednesday night with two bottles of pinot noir and were surprised to see that we were the only two dining there at the moment. We picked our own seats and the waiter came immediately with warm wet towels and a large pitcher of ice water. The atmosphere was very romantic and dimly lit, but not overly dark inside. Brick walls and large lamp structures adorn the restaurant. We were informed that Mesob did not give out any forms of silverware and that the towels were to clean our hands as we would be using our fingers to scoop the food. (probably a little too intimate for a first date) After being handed some menus we decided on 2 appetizers, the mushrooms, and mashed chick peas with jalapeños and onions. We also decided to have the meat sampler for 2 (recommended by the waiter) as an entree to split. Both of our appetizers came out within 5 minutes and were absolutely delicious. We were given rolled up crepe-like bread called "injera" which the waiter referred to as the equivalent of a pancake. He even gave us a bowl of the grain used to make it, which was incredibly fine, almost exactly like sand. This bread could be unrolled and ripped apart to pick up all the types of food served throughout the night. Despite his comment about the bread being like a pancake, I thought It was light, airy, and perfect to rip apart and grab the mushrooms and chick peas. When the entree came out it was a large plate with a circular injera and more served on the side. A waitress mixed all the different types of meat and scooped them onto our plate with spicy meats to one side and milder ones to the other. I feel that none were too spicy for the average non-spice eater. Every single meat on the plate was wonderful from the spicy "Abish Kay Wat" beef to the "Ye'Beg Aletcha" lamb. We were full before being able to finish much of it. Although too stuffed to grab dessert, by this time the restaurant was definitely bringing in more people, some of which who seemed to love the coffee flavored chocolates and other after dinner treats. I would say the food here is done pretty well. Along with being an interesting experience, this is certainly a place I would come back to just to try more new menu items. The staff is friendly and knowledgable, and the place itself is very chic. 4 stars.

Good options, but the quality of food here varies. Chef needs to maintain better consistency. Still great flavor and friendly staff. Parking can be a hassle depending on day and time.

For my monthly dinner with friends, we wanted to try something new. One of the girls suggested Ethiopian and after reading the amazing reviews this place had we all agreed. As soon as we arrived, the staff was very friendly. I checked in on yelp and got the free appetizer, we chose the bread in butter. We couldn't describe the texture of the bread but the combo was good and the butter was flavorful and a bit spicy which I liked. We opted for the lamb dinner with chick peas and potato side, the beef shiro with potato and collard greens and the chicken with chick peas and potato. Everything was delicious. The waitress told is how to eat it and encouraged is not to use utensils but if we really needed them she would bring them. I'm glad we did this because it was a fun and delicious experience! We had to scoop up the food with slices of the bread which made me full pretty quickly since I don't normally eat bread but if I could fit more food in my belly, I would have finished all of my dinner! It was so good. Thanks to this positive experience we are making it a point to try new places of different cultures.

Stopped by here while in town. It was recommended by my friends. I was surprised to find some of the freshest and amazing flavors I have ever had. I've been to a bunch of Ethiopian restaurants as this is one of my favorite cuisines. Mesob is one of the best I have ever had. Everything on the injeera was amazing! We had a party of 3 and ordered a huge platter! I liked how they served each dish right on the injeera in front of you, one at a time, and explained what each one was. It was a busy weekend night, but the service was great. They brought out extra injeera for us without asking. Great service, great food, great atmosphere, and BYOB. Oh Yeah! 5 stars.

A lil expensive but still worth it. The lamb and chick peas were my favorite. Do not forget to end with the original expresso. It was deceptively filling.

This is our favorite restaurant on earth. The owners and employees are gentle and kind. The food is fantastic. We used to live in Montclair and eat here during the discounted lunch hours almost daily, but now that we live far we drive to Montclair just for Mesob. Eating with your hands over a shared plate in such a classy place is a wonderful experience. The many children we've brought here think it's all so fun and genuinely enjoy the food. It's flavorful without being spicy (usually). I don't personally like spicy food so I appreciate the many non-spicy options and the vegetarian selection. I'm not a vegetarian anymore but prefer the vegetarian dishes. The portabella tibs are amaaaaaazing.

What an experience!! The food was delicious, the variety in spices were very interesting to say the least. I wish I could remember exactly what I had. I'm a newbie at Mesob so my expert friend ordered everything. No forks were provided only the Injera which is a spongy bread, I believe it's a sourdough. Not my cup of tea at all. The different stewed meats and vegetables were very good! The lamb and shrimp were especially AMAZING, the different kinds of lentils were yummy but definitely an acquired taste. Toward the completion of my meal I couldn't take it anymore I had to ask for a fork because I just couldn't bear another bite of that sponge like bread. Once I asked for a fork my "expert" friend and I literally looked at each other in complete awe! The forks should have been asked for at the beginning of our meal. I say this because the different stewed meats and veggies tasted completely different when eaten with forks. My palate was able to taste every spice individually. Scooping the meats and veggies with the injera was an interruption not allowing all those sharp spices to shine:) Oh yeah, be sure after dinner your going straight home because you'll smell like a walking spice rack.Yuck!

Mesob was a great and unique place to dine for adventurous foodies! We ordered the taste of Mesob for two, which really gave us a good idea of what Ethiopian food was all about. If you are new to Ethiopian cuisine I would recommend this dish to allow for exposure to the different types of foods Mesob has to offer. The sampler for two gives you the option of two appetizers, two chicken dishes, a shrimp dish, a lamb dish, two beef dishes, and three vegetables sides. All of these dishes are served on a HUGE piece of injera on an equally large plate. It was definitely a different experience to eat with your hands by using the injera to gather the meat and vegetables, but its worth it! Every dish was well seasoned and spiced in a way that you've probably never tasted before. I wish I could remember the specific meat dishes we ordered, but the names were slightly overwhelming to remember. It does seem that no matter what you order it will taste delicious! I do, however, remember the names of our appetizers. The Ye'misir Sambussa (lentil pastry) was yummy and not too spicy. As others have commented Ingudai tibs (spicy mushrooms) is amazing if you like food with a kick. Service was quick and efficient and kept the injera coming!! I will have to take friends and family here to try! For those with an open mind to food and don't mind anything too spicy Mesob is a must to try in Montclair!

If you want to use your hands & looking for a new experience to eat food, this is the place. It's in Montclair, so you know the quality is better than other areas. BYOB! -- Food portions are good to share with friends & family. It might be too intimate for a first date with the food-sharing concept. Ambience is relaxing & they dim the lights just enough after sunset. Music is just right so you can have a nice convo & not yelling to be heard from the other side of the table. Waiters are nice, calm, & not bothersome at all.

While this place is known widely for its dinner menu, their once-a-month brunch is where it's at! My husband and I had been trying to go for months, but since we were dating long-distance at the time, trying to schedule my visit for the last Sunday of the month didn't always pan out. Finally, when the time did come, it was worth the wait. Served in traditional Ethiopian style, the brunch comes with a selection of sweet and savory dishes along with injera - the delicious sour crepe-like bread that you use to scoop up all the tastiness before you. The Ethiopian coffee is the perfect complement to the meal and will make for a most pleasant Sunday. My only complaint is that this brunch only happens once a month.

Just recently came here for my first taste of Ethiopian food! Best bet for variety is getting 2 samplers for one, a meat and a vegetable - great for a small group, or 2 very hungry people! The place has a very cool vibe, and is by far the fanciest looking restaurant you'll ever go to where you're expected to eat with your hands. The staff is very friendly as well, they'll happily explain what each dish is made of. It's all very good; I love spicy food, but be wary if that's not your thing!

Mesob is one of my favorite restaurants in Montclair. I love Ethiopian food, mostly because it offers me plenty of choices as a vegetarian while my omnivore friends have lots of options, too. My favorite veggie dishes are misir wat, shiro, and yeshimbra asa. The injera is always fresh and plentiful. It seems that there is always a waitress walking around with a basket of injera ready at a moment's notice. Really, my only criticism is that I wish they had a more reasonably priced lunch menu.

Delicious food. Had meat combination. Most of it was really tasty, some could have used a little more spice. Unfortunately you can't substitute any of the dishes part of the combination...

Mesob is a great find in Montclair and it's BYOB. I am not a fan of spicy foods, but there are many options to try. I have gone there a few different times, but recently this past week we went with another couple. For an appetizer, we had the Buticha. It was a very delicious spin on Hummus. It was crumbled, not the smooth texture we were expecting, but flavorful nonetheless. We decided to order the dinner meat sampler for 4, where you try 5 different types of meats and get to pick a side. (Def try the Gomen!!) The meat was so tender, but my favorite was the lamb. The most fun part, is everything is eaten with their bread, no utensils. I enjoyed the bread, it was spongy, but has its own unique flavor to it. For Dessert, we enjoyed the flourless chocolate espresso torte. It was very good, but extremely rich. We split the small piece among 4 people and it definitely satisfied our sweet tooth! The only negative I have is they would NOT accept my coupon for a free appetizer, which was very upsetting. I received it via email and when I gave it to the waiter, towards the end of the meal, he said it was too late. He also said I was not able to speak to a manager about it because she was not there. I said if I had known the rule I would have given it earlier, but it is customary to wait until the bill is on its way. He would not take the appetizer off, which even though was great, we would not have gotten if we had known it was not free. I would still recommend Mesob to try. The food is great, but remember to show your coupons as soon as you get there!

This is the first Ethiopian restaurant I've tried, and I haven't found any other that matches it. Great ambience. Absolutely wonderful food, vegetarian-friendly. Especially the coffee and desert--they had some good choices for back when I was a vegan. Love this place and come here quite often. Definitely a must.

Our favorite Ethiopian restaurant (Makeda's in New Brunswick) closed after 18+ years so, yearning for the cuisine, we decided to try Mesob while in the area. The food here was good, but not as good as Makeda. Also, while the meat/seafood portion was ample the 2 vegetable sides were tiny and inadequate. The injera was perfect. Prices were reasonable and as a BYOB that makes it a reasonable choice so we would consider going back if in the area but I wouldn't make the drive otherwise.

some of the better Ethiopian food i've tried, although not the best! get ready to eat w/ your hands, you can ask for unlimited injera (mildly sour sponge-like bread). although you can opt for a fork if you're just not up to it for 5 people we got an appetizer, the vegetarian combo plate for "2" & the meat sampler for "3" & were WAY OVERSTUFFED! don't remember every dish we ordered but my favs were... ---ye'beg aletcha (lamb) ---dinich wat (spicy potatoes) SKIP the doro tibs (chicken) it was really dry! NOTE: check-in on yelp for a free appetizer!! (great way to try the Ingudai tibs which normally costs extra when ordered w/ a sampler plate)

Great restaurant! If you have never had Ethiopian food before, it is a really unique taste and experience. All of the food is served with a delicious sourdough crepe-like pancake bread called injera, which you use instead of utensils. Every dish I've tried has been flavorful and very simple. The seasonings and spice really enhance the natural flavors of the meats and vegetables. This would be a great place to go with a vegetarian or vegan, as the vegetable options are just as good as the meat options, really plentiful, and an equally fun experience. I love that you get to choose so many different options, and get a little taste of everything - great for anyone who is indecisive or just wants to try everything. On our most recent visit, we started with the AYIB BEMITMITA, tangy fresh farmer's cheese with delicious chili powder sprinkled on top. YUM! My friend and I split the meat sampler, which was great because the menu can feel a little overwhelming - this made all of the decisions for us, and they were great decisions! Our favorites were: YE'BEG ALETCHA - delicious simmered bone-in and boneless lamb. So tender and delicious! MINCHET ABISH ALETCHA - ground beef in a delicious mild sauce MISIR WAT - lentils simmered in a spicy sauce My friend is gluten free, and we made a reservation online the day before and requested gluten-free injera, and they were very accommodating.

Good food, unique experience. Definitely worth a try if you want to Came here for dinner a few months back and ordered the following: YE'SIGA SAMBUSSA: fried pastry triangles filled with ground beef, spices INGUDAI TIBS: sauteed eggplant with spices. the spicy option is very spicy and not recommended if you haven't ordered something light to take down the heat. YE'MESOB SELATA: nothing special Meat Sampler for 1: out of which the lamb was my favorite. GOMEN with ATKILT ALETCHA and TIKIL GOMEN: the Gomen was delish! Couldn've eaten a plateful of just that. Here's the only miss: We had wanted to get our leftovers doggy bagged and had instructed the injera be packed separately, twice. However after we got home, found the injera mushed in a tinie container with the leftovers. Good food in a comfortable, relaxed space. Recommended over Lalibela atmosphere-wise and Queen of Sheba (NYC) food-wise.

Mesob is over the top amazing food! Every time the food is fresh and delivcous! As one of the best Ethiopian in the world they also have elegant service and a beautiful dining room! I enjoy the chocolate and coffee as well! I totally endorse Mesob! You will love the clean quality of this food!

I've been here too many times according to my boyfriend because I just genuinely enjoy the place. The food is great, the ambience is just right and overall it's just a nice experience. I've only ever had Ethiopian food in LA before this and Mesob is right up there. I would recommend the Timatim Fitfit and the Lega Lamb though any of the Tibs entrees are very good. Everyone should try this place once, if only just for a break from your usual dining routine.

Overall a great place. I've spent many years enjoying Ethiopian food at Makeda in New Brunswick and it's great to find a place that is up to that quality. We came in at 8:15 for an 8:30 reservation on a busy Friday night, popped next door for a bottle of wine (it's BYOB) and were seated promptly when we returned. The place is buzzing on a Friday night, with a great energy. There were lots of large parties and seems like a great place to bring a crowd - both for the atmosphere and for the "all hands in" style of Ethiopian dining. We went with their farmer's cheese and their fitfit salad to start. Both were very good, but the cheese + the rolled up injera that it comes with were quite heavy. If you were to eat the whole thing, you'd be done for the night. Not an issue if you have a bit of self control, but just be aware. Everything was very delicious. For the main, we went with the meat sampler for two. Everything was great and they are quite generous with the amount of meat and side. Don't discount the sides at all - the lentils and split peas are fantastic. They are generous with the injera and right on top of it if you start to run low. We skipped dessert and ran across the street for a movie. Overall, it was a great experience and we will be back.

I never had ethiopian food before, and this was an AMAZING first time. The food was delicious, and it was so refreshing and interesting to eat in the way of their culture. I will most certainly be back to order the appetizer sampler and lamb entree again!!

Absolutely the best restaurant in Montclair and the best Ethiopian food I've had to date. The staff is friendly and accomodating, the food is authentic and the energy is infectious. I was going to give four stars due to the level of noise in the restaurant; it get's very loud and crowded, making conversation sometimes difficult. But this place deserves rave reviews and is a great place to start someone on their culinary journey to new and exciting places. A must try!

went their on a date, the atmosphere was not what i had envisioned, Im not one to use my hands when eating, unless it ribs, corn on the cob and such, and that might have been the reason of my 2 stars. The service was nice, and friendly, BUT the quality, and here again it may have been me, wasnt to my liking either. I will not be going back

So I have been dying to go here for a whole year but the only person who also wanted to go was always busy, I finally asked someone else and holy crap, it was worth the wait! Let's start with the ambience, very peaceful but probably because we were there early on an afternoon, it looked like a museum! I'm like omg it's so nice in here are you sure this is a place to eat? Lol. BYOB is a plus, and you know Montclair with their local wine & liquor shops adds to convenience. The waitresses were nice & the dining ware is articulate. My friend had a lamb type platter with the injera & of course as a newbie I had the meat sampler. freah-kin-de-li-cious! That soft bread is addictive! The appetizers were amazing (See inset photos) I learned alot here & makes me proud to be open-minded about different culture foods. I've already raved about it to my open-minded foodie friends & can't wait to bring them next time! Please go! Clean, healthy, fresh, flavorful and absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!! :D

Great place. Not what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fantastic, and the service was equally as great. Having never been there before I was pleasantly suprised by the accommodation to my wheat allergy. I never expect a restaurant to be that understanding of an allergy. I would recommend to call two days before, to make sure the have the bread ready for you. My only other piece of advice, is do not order spicy unless you have extreme hate for your bowel. I love spicy food, but they take it to another extreme. I can't wait to go back, and not order spicy.

Our waitress was the reason we had such a great time at this place. We were unsure of what to order since it was the first time trying Ethiopian food. She recommended we do a platter with chicken, lamb, beef, and vegetables sides. The platter seemed very small when it came out (for a group of 5) but by the time we began eating we realized we were not finishing everything. My favorite was the lamb. Very delectable. Next time, I really want to try the shrimp. I couldn't this time because my friend was allergic. The restaurant is BYOB, very cozy atmosphere!

Mesob serves great Ethiopian food at a price that's not a bargain but still relatively reasonable (compared to sticker shock at Makeda in New Brunsick). Vegetarian dishes are terrific. It says a lot when a carnivore like me walked away loviing the vegetarian plates more than the meat dishes (even though their goat and pork dishes are especially good). Unfortunately, we made a reservation which was not honored until 10-15 mins past the reservation time, and wait staff was sometimes hard to flag down, so one star off. The noise level in this restaurant can get very loud as well.

  • Devashis R.

This should be a four or even five star place. I found the food to be delicious and filling. We came with a group of 8 people, so we kind of sampled off of everyone's plate. The meat sampler and vegetarian sampler seemed to be hits. I had the Lega Tibs (lamb) and it was fabulous. Person right next to me had the Shrimp Tibs, and they were cooked perfectly. You do get two vegetable choices with your entree, so that was nice (quantity of sides seemed small, though). My complaints are as follows. They were actually very accommodating for our birthday group reservation, which arrived a bit late. They are a busy place, so we appreciated that. However, the waitress seemed like it was a big inconvenience to be serving us. I understand a large group can be a hassle, but this is your job; customers aren't trouble when they are providing business. I have a feeling that because our gratuity was going to be included, service didn't have to really excel. There did seem to be a lot of large groups there, so I believe they are used to them. It's unfortunate. The "Sambussa" appetizers are grossly over priced. Two small sized pastries for about $7? There should be at least one more; won't be ordering that again. Also, they did charge us a plating fee per person ($2pp x 8 = $16) to bring a birthday cake. A bit annoying since that essentially doubled the price of the cake, but I understand. I would go again with a smaller group and see how service was. BYOB is also an added bonus.

Definitely one of the more interesting/unique dining experiences in Montclair. Nice restaurant. Liked the vibe and experience but the food was just OK in my opinion (personal preference). I didn't really like the injera bread, too sour for me. This is the only time I had Ethiopian food so it's hard to say if I am just not into it or not into this particular restaurant's take on it. Menu is vegetarian friendly. Nonetheless, I would absolutely recommend venturing out of your comfort zone and trying a new cuisine.

Very good quality Ethiopian food. Everything tasted really good. Nice upscale atmosphere but definitely make a reservation in advance. A tad bit pricey compared to other Ethiopian restaurants I've eaten at, but definitely worth it considering there aren't many Ethiopian restaurants around.

Mesob is definitely a delicious Ethiopian restaurant in Montclair, NJ. I have to be honest, though, and share that I am completely biased because my favorite Ethiopian is in my neighborhood in the City. The ambiance is cute, the waitstaff is absolutely amazing, and the food was tantalizing. The restaurant is BYOB/W, which adds a nice, romantic flair to the atmosphere. Between guzzling your own wine and eating with your hands, you feel like you're on an exotic picnic. I mean, you definitely need to check it out. Who doesn't like injera?!

    ayib bemitmita (farmer's cheese mixed with Ethipian chili powder, I really liked this!! It was served with small rolls of injera; the bread itself was cold and tangy and with the tangy cheese, it was a great combination of flavors, I really liked the chili powder that was dashed on top, I wish there was more of it); ye'sigga sambussa (pastry filled with minced beef, scallions, onions, peppers and herbs; I liked this, it was like an empanada, lightly fried, thin flaky pastry; the meat had a good flavor to it and salty enough, it was more plain than anything, not my favorite thing in the world); gomen be'siga (lamb cubes with collard greens simmered in a sauce with mild spices; I liked this!!! it was a little sour too but I loved the flavor, the lamb was a little too well done for me but still tender; the combo with the collard greens was awesome); bozena shiro (cubed prime beef simmered in shiro, which is spicy yellow split peas; I liked this, it was a little spicy and the beef was really good, it is reminiscent of vindaloo); dinich wat (potatoes in a spicy sauce; omg I loved this!!! it was the best side we had; the potato was so nicely cooked and I don't know how they prepared this but it was awesome; the potato was perfect); buticha (chickpeas pureed and chilled seasoned with red onions, garlic, jalepeno, olive oil, lemon juice and spices; I liked this! it was served cold, it was chunky and grainy but the flavors were nice); ye'shimba assa wat (chickpea biscuits simmered in spicy sauce; the size of the biscuits and how they were cut looked like Cheez-its. haha. I guess they used a cutter to get uniform biscuits; this dish was interesting; I liked the texture of the biscuits and the sauce was good but I wish the biscuits soaked the sauce, but it was disconnected, I felt like they didn't gel well together); miser wat (split lentils in spicy sauce; this was the spiciest thing we ordered; I liked it to a point but I felt like there were no definition of lentils in there lol); injera (the Ethiopian bread was so interesting, it was like a cold chewy pancake, I think people who have texture issues would really dislike this bread; it was sour too which was totally unexpected; it went well with everything, I think it being cold made it easy to handle and a good vessel for the food, which we ate with our hands) Tib wat (cubed prime beef sautéed and simmered in a spicy sauce seasoned with spices and fresh herbs; yummy!! this was really good; I loved the flavor of the meat and it was spicy enough); YE'BEG ALETCHA (tender pieces of lamb, boneless & on the bone, simmered in mild sauce seasoned with spiced and fresh herbs; it was mild but still very good, I wish it was more lamby though); tikil gomen (cabbage and potatoes in a spicy sauce; yum!! I love the way they cook their potatoes, always good); DIFEN MISIR ALETCHA (whole brown lentils simmered in a mild sauce seasoned with spices & herbs; it was alright, not my favorite side) Been here twice and definitely some of the most interesting meals I've ever had; I loved using my hands to eat everything, the way the food was served was awesome, I would totally go back to try more of their food. Service is great and the atmosphere is super cozy;

Really solid Ethiopian food in Montclair. Great dining room. Top notch service. It's BYO so bring your own bottle if you so desire. The meat sampler was very good - the only item I was not wowed by was the ground beef. The mushrooms were the best I ever had. Highly recommend this place.

I had the lamb with collard greens (gomen be'siga) and the lamb was so tender. Each dish comes with two vegetable sides so I had the dinich wat (potatoes in a spicy sauce) and ye'shimbra assa wat (chick pea biscuits in a spicy sauce). I loved that spicy sauce, it really was delicious and I love a little kick to my meal. The bread that they put it on (and they provide you plenty on the side) was delicious. I can still taste it in my mouth as I am writing this. It's so delicious and filling. I don't think I stopped to talk or breath for a good hour or so while stuffing my face like the foodie I am. They were also friendly enough to check for gluten free bread for one of our diners (even though we forgot to call a day ahead because this was a last minute decision to go) and were able to give us some. The gluten free bread is also really great! The service is friendly and attentive. I love when I feel like I can smile with my waiter and have a good time (especially since we kept accepting more and more bread). The decor is tasteful and inviting. Also, the lighting is dark enough that it'd be perfect for date night. FYI it's BYOB so that's a perk and saves you some money! I'm definitely going to go back more often than I have in the past. GO! Now! Don't waste your time - check it out!!!

Usually after I go to an Ethiopian restaurant, I leave and say, "Okay, I don't need to do that again for another five years." The good news is that I didn't say that after my visit to Mesob last night. I think the secret is that they've updated the Ethiopian traditional restaurant for local tastes. Gone is the basket-like table and you're not sitting on the floor. Mesob offers a warm and stylish setting to enjoy the food of Ethiopia. I ordered the mixed greens salad along with the portobello mushroom entree. The waiter helpfully suggested I get the mushrooms in the appetizer size. It was delicious, with a spicy kick you don't usually find with this mushroom, but may have been a bit much as a large plate for one. A nice balance to the mushroom dish was the chickpea appetizer. The chickpeas are crushed and it tastes almost like egg salad (without the eggs!). Another welcome addition is that while the food is served with the spongey injera bread, you can also use utensils. Sometimes eating with the injera can be too filling, if not tricky at times. Judging from the crowded dining room on a Tuesday night, I would say that Mesob has created a great recipe for bringing Ethiopian cuisine to the people.

3 and a half stars I enjoyed this place but some of the people I was with didn't. It's a unique experience! and the food was delicious but I would say I enjoyed the experience MORE than the food . The food isn't something I would go jumping around about but it was filling. Pricey. Wish I knew sharing is smarter than each of is getting our own individual plates.

We live in the city but come here for Ethiopian food cause we have been disappointed with the ones in the city. If you are a vegetarian, this place is a heaven. Stick with the vegetarian sampler. I likes most of the lentil dishes but the red lentils(Misir wot) one is the best as it has the right amount of spice for my taste buds. I would stay away from the lentil sambusa and tikil gomen(cabbage and potatoes) as there was nothing special about them. My wife loves one of the lamb dishes and I have tried Doro Kay Wat which is chicken drumsticks and egg in a spicy red sauce and it's delicious. Did I say we love eating food family style from one large plate!.. Try this place and you won't be disappointed.

If it weren't for the bad service, I would have given this place 4 stars for the food and the unique experience. Definitely one of the worst services I've ever had in a restaurant. The staff was unbelievably slow and unfriendly. Now if they were busy, I'd be more understanding but they were obviously not. Eating with you hands was definitely a unique and fun experience. The food was good but it wasn't amazing. It's definitely worth checking out but as for me who has seen the place, I most likely wouldn't come back.

A delightful, different dining experience. Excellent vegetarian sampler - the four of us had virtually every vegetable dish - and each was wonderful. Collards, three types of lentils (red was my favorite), potatoes, etc ., all with a lovely spice, but not crazy-hot. The "bread" (think spongy crepe) takes getting used to, but eating without utensils is fun (you can use a fork, but when in Rome...) Staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive. Atmosphere was stylish and comfortable. Well worth a visit for a different experience.

3.5 Stars. Last night was actually my 3rd time dining at Mesob, so there must be something i like about it right? This review will be a summary of my three visits. My initial visit was after my gf pleaded for me to try this place. Since i had zero experience with Ethiopian food, i was a little nervous about what to expect. I clearly recall the aroma of fresh roasted coffee beans hitting me as walked in. It smelled great and managed to help put me at ease. I am truly a "Meat & Potatoes" kind of guy. So while the meal was enjoyable, i was left with a sense of being unfulfilled. On our second visit, i already knew what i was expecting, so there were no preconceived notions or nervousness brought on by the unknown. The second time around was a much more fulfilling experience than the first. So on to last night... We got the Taste of Mesob for 2. You get 2 starters, 2 chicken dishes, 2 beef dishes, 1 lamb offering, and 3 sides from the vegetable section. You can customize this to your personal preferences. My lady can't handle too much spice, so everything was mild and we got the spicy-ness on the side for me. Everything was yummy and filling but didn't weigh you down. So if you are in the mood to travel the world while in Montclair and don't want the usual pizza or chinese take out, this would be a place to expand your culinary horizons. Enjoy!

Since this was my first time sampling Ethiopian food, I was pleasantly surprised to find that so many vegan and vegetarian dishes could taste so d[a]mn good! The servers are so incredibly attentive and extremely nice. I was very happy with how my table was treated. Highly recommend that you make a reservation so that you do not endure the 30+ minute wait we endured. Eating with our fingers & injeras (thin holey crepe-like utensil replacements) was a fun experience, not very hard to master. Now onto the food - portions are HUGE & the options are expensive. We each ordered an entree because it is either that (and have some leftover for the next day) or pay a $7/person sharing charge, definitely losing a star for that. Here is what my table ordered: [Appetizer] Ingudai Tibs: portobello mushrooms marinated & sautéed with onions, garlic & fresh tomatoes. We ordered it medium for spiciness level and it was really enjoyable. Their spice isn't tasted immediately, it is more of what kicks in after you have finished the bite. I definitely recommend ordering this as an appetizer (we got this for free because they give you a free appetizer for checking in through Yelp). Ye'siga Sambussa: Two hand-wrapped shells of thin pastry filled with a blend of minced beef, onions, scallions, peppers & herbs. This was actually three pieces and it wasn't anything special. The skin was crispy & flaky, but the portion was really small (and the 3 itty-bitty pieces came out to be $7) and the flavor wasn't super-memorable. [Entrees] Doro Aletcha: tender chicken legs & a hard-boiled egg simmered in mild sauce. Super-delicious! I chose the gomen & the tikil gomen as my two vegetarian sides - definitely some good choices! Gomen Be'siga: cubed lamb mixed with fresh collard greens & simmered in a mild sauce seasoned with spices and herb. I normally don't like lamb, but this was REALLY good. For me, I am really sensitive to the gamy taste of lamb so I found that still to be present, but lamb enthusiast or not, it is a darn good dish. Ye'shimbra Assa Wat: chick pea biscuits simmered in a spicy sauce. This was my favorite dish of everything I tried. The chick pea + biscuit was a great combination that combined a saucy crunch packed with amazing flavor. Yesssir, add this to your dinner! Make sure to give someone a gorsha - an Ethiopian tradition of feeding someone, usually a "larger bite." Good bonding experience! Unfortunately, the food doesn't taste as good the next day so make sure to try to consume as much as you can while there. The appetizers are smaller, but the entrees are HUGE.

Due to a weak stomach, I was a bit apprehensive to try this restaurant. With that being said, I have to say that the food was delicious and I can't wait to go back! The waiters were nice and patient. They were willing to explain the menu and make amazing suggestion!!! The decor was spacious and calming and provided a nice dinner ambiance. If you're in Montclair, NJ please stop by this amazing location.

Would be 5 stars but it was so HOT in there it was uncomfortable. This was my first go at Ethiopian. What screams FUN more than eating mystery meat with your hands. All the dishes were very tasty. Nothing was overly spiced or lacking. Can't wait to go back!

I got a hankering for Ethiopian food after getting a Groupon/Living Social email for another restaurant but I ended up choosing this place instead after I read a Yelper preferring Mesob over the other one. A roundabout way of choosing Mesob over their competition (I assume), I know, but my fix was satisfied and so was ma belly!! My friend and I came here on Father's Day for an early dinner, and I had made reservations anyway just in case. And good thing I did, because not long after we were seated, the place started filling up. Upon the recommendation of our waiter, we started off with Ingudai Tibs, which are portabello mushrooms sauteed with onions, garlic and fresh tomatoes, and served with what I've been craving for: Injera. I probably would've been satisfied with the Injera alone which, I guess, I was after we ravished those mushrooms. For dinner, we shared Lega Tibs--cubed boneless leg of lamb marinated & sauteed with onions, garlic, jalapenos (we ordered the dish mild), fresh tomato, herbs and spices--with a side of Gomen (collard greens) and Dinich Wat (potatoes simmered in a spicy sauce seasoned with herbs and spices). I just salivated. So yes, everything was delicious! Sadly, we were too full to peruse the dessert menu but that's OK because we will be back! We ended our meal with Kemem Shai instead, which is East African tea with dried ginger, cardamom cloves and cinnamon. It was a wonderful experience, overall. We absolutely recommend.

This place is a gem and I wish the owners would adopt me. If we lived in Montclair, we'd go at least once a month. I love Ethiopian food, and Mesob is one of the best. Our go-to favorites are any of the vegetarian dishes (veggie sampler is a great way to go!), the ingudai tibs (portabella mushroom), and the shrimp tibs. So good. They also serve a special brunch every last Saturday of the month. That's also great and worth a try at least once. I still prefer their regular entree dishes just because they can't be beat. It sounds like people have had so-so experiences with the servers, but personally I'm a fan. They're very patient, helpful, and are always smiling. I also love the warm atmosphere of the restaurant, the wood detailing, the Ethiopian decor, and the delicious smell of spices that greets you whenever you first walk in. Love this place.

Mesob offers delicious authentic Ethiopian. It is a cultural experience to eat here, with beautiful interior decor that compliments the vibe and food. The set up is great for groups and couples. No utensils required here - you have crepe-like, spongy inerja to use instead and soak up all the brothy goodness. Who doesn't want an edible utensil? For first timers I'd recommend the sample platters - both meat and veg give a lovely assortment of flavors.

This wasn't my first Ethiopian food experience, but it certainly was my best. I split a GIANT vegan sampler made for 4 people, and we all downed it in about 5 minutes flat. I wish I was joking. My favorites were the cabbage/potatoes and the one with mushrooms. As far as I'm concerned, everything I ever eat should be scooped up with injera.

Delicious! My suggestion: order the Taste of Mesob. You'll be able to try a little bit of everything. Even better, let your server decide which items to include in it. You won't be disappointed.

Have gone here many times and always get the same thing - the appetizer sample and the meat sampler. Both are amazing and definitely can serve more than 2 people. I've split it with 3 and still not finished either. Just delicious.

Gave my GF a hard time about Injeera and Ethiopian food after reading a travel journal book. The traveler in the book disliked the food and was sick of Injeera. However, I am always willing to try something at least once and was pleasantly surprised with Mesob. Mesob requires a reservation and we set one up online. We arrived a little late since my GF was walking from Little Falls and I was taking the train from Jersey City. When we rendez-vous, I was happy that my GF had remembered to bring a bottle of wine from home (Mesob is BYOB). Otherwise, I was going to pick one up in Montclair while walking from the train station. Once inside, we enjoyed the atmosphere immediately. It was dark and homey with interesting artifacts (such as traditional clothing) pinned on the walls and on the floor. We were promptly seated and provided menus. Checking the menu (which had a description of various terms such as Tibs, was rather useful and informative), we had no clue what to order and decided to get a few samplers: Starter Sampler (for 2) Meat Sampler (for 2) Vegetarian Sampler (for 2) While waiting for the food, we enjoyed the atmosphere and picked up the paper pamphlet menu to take notes of what we liked. The Start Sampler was served with rolled strips of Injeera and the Meat/Vegetarian Samplers were served atop huge round sheets of Injeera. We ate the traditional way without utensils using the Injeera to pick up and eat the food. Throughout our meal, we never ran out of Injeera as the waiter made regular rounds to provide more to all of the tables. My favorite items were Doro Tibs (chicken) and Ye'beg Aletcha (lamb). However, I could honestly eat any of the items all day long, it was just all so delicious. The water service was very good with it served in carafes. We only had to prompt the waiter once for more water (however, we had ended up drinking about 3-4 of them). Other items to note include that the paper pamphlet menu is a bit outdated and does not include some of the samplers. Their online dinner menu (pdf) was not accessible but fixed a few days after I mentioned it to the waiter during dinner. Their menu has 'A Taste of Mesob' option for 2 at 65$. Wish there was another option less meat heavy for vegetarians at a lower cost. All of the food is great and we liked the ability to sample most of the items. However, the 'A Taste of Mesob' option allows for a similar flexibility with the added ability to focus on the items you enjoy the most. Also, there are many options for traditional non-alcoholic drinks (such as freshly roasted and brewed Ethiopian coffee) and deserts (homemade chocolates). We were too full to try these and still had to walk 5+ miles home. In summary, the experience was very enjoyable and I would go here again. However, the 60$ price tag for 2 people does put a small damper on things (especially when we did not order any non-alcoholic drinks or deserts).

This is a great restaurant to go with a group of friends. It's fun, exotic and delicious! The service tends to be a bit slow, but I don't see that as a bad thing. You are neither rushed nor constantly interrupted, so you can enjoy your conversation and meal on your own terms. The standouts: Ingudai Tibs, Shrimp Tibs and the Ethiopian Coffee. For the first timers try the sampler - it will give you a good variety of their offerings, trust the servers; they know their stuff. Don't save room for dessert - Montclair has plenty of other places you can go to get better dessert. If you plan on going on a weekend, DO make a reservation - you will get a better table. This is my go to place for a friends night out, you won't be disappointed.

I don't believe I've ever had Ethiopian food before this place, and it was a fantastic place to start! For anyone who isn't "in the know", you basically order a whole bunch of meat, fish or veggie dishes (your choice: mild, medium or hot), which are served with a very thin spongy bread. You tear off pieces of the bread with your hands and use this to scoop up the chicken, or lamp, or whatever you ordered. The menu is fantastic, with many options for all palates. If I had to complain about anything (and it would be a small complaint if one at all), it would be that the menu is slightly confusing to navigate. It states that you receive your choice of two sides with each entree, and then stipulates that you are not allowed to choose one of the sides. Then it FURTHER stipulates that if you choose either of TWO specific sides (it mentions the names of all these, but alas, I do not speak Ethiopian), there is a $3.50 upcharge. There is also a $6 upcharge if you're sharing a dish (not specific regarding whether this shared dish is an app, an entree, whatever). So that's a little confusing, but, hey, we were there, it was great company, and money wasn't REALLY an issue that day as it is rare we get to spend a meal with these members of our family. Now, beyond that, the food itself is outstanding. We ordered "Medium" heat on everything, which proved wise, as the taste was enhanced and our sinuses cleared, but it was not unpleasant. They also kept refilling the water regularly, which warrents extra points. The atmosphere is interesting. I can assume, from my MidWest American Caucasian Protestant roots that it's authentic Ethiopian decor, but what do I know? Regardless, the place smelled like cloves and was very cozy and warm. The ONLY reason I'm giving 4-stars instead of 5 is because my fiance said she wasn't a fan. She didn't elaborate, other than to say "I don't like Ethiopian food" (She'd had it before). Quite frankly, it's a smart move to agree with her, as she is right far more often than I can ever hope to be.

Food is very good and we enjoyed everything we had. The iced tea was very good. The atmosphere is welcoming as are the staff. Our food was served quickly and the brought us more injera as soon as we needed more. I am not quite sure if they were really slow bringing the check or just did not want to interrupt us. I asked for the check and they brought it to us right away. I think the spicy dishes could have used a little more spice, but overall very tasty.

Delicious food, can't wait to go back. Got both the appetizer and meat sampler. Very different and tasty. Cannot go wrong here, great for a group of adventurous eaters. Waiters/waitresses didn't really explain what anything was so we had to kind of just guess as we ate.

This place is incredible! I dined for the first time yesterday and was amazed with the amount of effort put into such high quality dishes, flawless service, and friendly-like atmosphere. The portions are very large and can be shared among the party. Definitely save room for the amazing desserts, especially their roasted coffee done on the spot.

I have really enjoyed Mesob, and the staff is wonderful. My only critiques would be that in all the times I've been there there haven't been a lot of changes to the menu. I also agree with Kyle S. around some more interesting spices or flavors. But for local Ethiopian, it's quite good, extremely convenient, and again, a great staff.

A different experience and the food is delicious. I wasn't really into to this when it was described to me, especially after being told I would be using my hands to eat. But after trying the food, I didn't care. The only thing different I would have done was ordered rice to eat the food with instead of eating the bread they serve the food in. The food is well seasoned and not to hot if that's not your thing. The atmosphere is very relaxing and a great place to bring friends and allow them to enjoy the experience as well.

I am very familiar with Ethiopian cuisine, so I was not surprised by menu of Mesob. The food is very good but to be honest I have had better at the Ethiopean Diamond in Chicago. I think that their food is authentic, vegetarian friendly and definetly tasiter. However, since I cannot frequent the Diamond, Mesob is a great alternative. It seems like it can be pretty busy on the weekends so I would suggest going early, Also, they are BYOB which is disapointing because Tej (Ethiopian honey wine) really makes a meal!

When I think about a good night out at a restaurant, I think about this place. The staff is super friendly and the food is so delicious! We got a vegetarian sampler split between the three of us and it was plenty of food. The bread is SO GOOD and delicious. This place should stick around for a LONG time! BYOB, too!!!!! the pictures you'll see on the internet are not helpful at all. just go to this place and try it if you've never had ethiopian food. it's a lot like eating Indian food. who needs silverware when you've got hands and fingers?

One of my favorite places to eat and the one that I seem to go to the least (it's hard to find anyone as often excited by injera as I seem to be). I always get the vegetarian platter where you get a variety of their vegan prepared dishes. Lentils, chickpeas, collard greens, split peas, potatoes, all in varying degrees of hot and spicy, warm and cold, rich flavors and simple notes. Comes on huge pieces of injera and I love scooping it all up with my fingers. The service is excellent, the decor and ambiance of the place is warm and the place just smells like something I wish I could bottle and wear behind the ears everyday. I really must make it out there again sooner than later.

I love the casual ambiance of Mesob. Exposed brick, wood accents, and earthy colors lend warmth to its hip-yet-relaxed atmosphere. The scent of cloves permeates the room, adding to the anticipation of the exotic meal that lies ahead. An oval-shaped bar in the center of the restaurant serves as a hub for busy staff, and offers some temporary seating to patrons waiting for tables to empty. This does come in handy; we went early on a Sunday evening and were seated right away - but by the time we left, the place was standing room only. We decided on the Vegetarian Sampler for Two. They placed in front of us a large platter covered with injera (a spongy, crepe-like flat bread with a pleasantly sour flavor). They then brought out six different dishes, which we got to choose from their large array of vegetable entrees. Each dish was scooped out onto the injera, and additional bread was provided for the scooping. (They will bring extra injera when they notice you've finished your supply; we didn't even have to ask.) Of our six choices, my favorite dish was the Shiro (pureed split peas and chick peas cooked with onions, garlic and spices). It had a thick, creamy texture, rich savory flavor, and just enough heat. The runner up was Misir Wat (lentils cooked in a spicy berbere sauce). The berbere imparted a lovely deep red color, complex flavor, and perfect amount of heat; this was probably the spiciest dish of the bunch. The Kik Aletcha (yellow split peas simmered with onions and spices) was mildly spicy with a slightly tangy flavor; it had a chunkier texture than the other legume dishes. The Ingudai Tibs (slices of portobello mushrooms cooked with onion, garlic, tomatoes & spices) was very flavorful, and had a meaty texture that added variety to an array of mostly soft-cooked dishes. Gomen (collard greens cooked until tender with onions and spices) and Atkilt Aletcha (green beans and thin strips of carrots simmered in a mellow sauce until meltingly soft) were simply spiced but very flavorful, and rounded out the meal nicely. Of course, the best part of the meal was the food-soaked injera, which we tore apart at the end. Yum... We followed our meal with an authentically prepared Ethiopian coffee. House-roasted coffee beans were ground and brewed to produce a thick, richly flavored espresso-style coffee. It was served in small, demitasse-style cups with milk that I think had been warmed with spices - I definitely detected a hint of cardamom. Delicious! Just watch out for sediment on the bottom of the cup. We didn't bother with dessert. Flourless Chocolate Espresso Torte and Creme Brulee seemed mundane and out of place after the exotic meal we'd just experienced. The Halewa with Pistachios sounded more traditional, and their gourmet vegan chocolates are at least infused with traditional flavors (berbere spiced ganache!), but we weren't in the mood for candies. It would be nice to see a few more imaginative dessert offerings. Overall, Mesob offers a nice atmosphere, delicious food, and a fun dining experience. This is the best Ethiopian food we've found in this area so far, and we'll definitely return.

We've been for lunch several times. Very disappointing both times and VERY pricey! Especially for the small amount you get during lunch (and I do mean small). The dishes tend to be very same-y, same-y. We went back a second time to see if our experience would be better. But it wasn't. We're very experimental diners and have travelled many places. Sadly, I cannot give a better rating. Very nice, friendly atmosphere with very good service tho.

Love that Montclair has such a diverse group of restaurants. I have been to Mesob on numerous occassions and have never been disappointed. Everything is good and it is fun to eat with your hands. Once I order, I tend to forget what everything is but it all tastes good. My mother is vegetarian so we usually get one plate of vegetarian and one plate of meat. The wait staff is very nice and it is a good atmostphere.

Really great food. Service was a bit slow, but probably just because it's busy (on both occasions that I went). Healthy, vegan friendly and good location for taking a nice walk afterwards. Great for an intimate group of people (or a couple) who enjoy eating family style. Delicious vegetarian / vegan options (I still can't believe how much I love cabbage now as a result of dining here). The meats were tender and well-flavored.

Had a great meal at Mesob the other night...4 adults, 2 teenagers, a 9-year old and a 3-year old...we loved the experience of eating with our hands, all of us reaching into the same giant platter of wonderful food, sampling and commenting on the delicious flavors...so much fun! The service was gracious and proficient, the decor beautiful, and the music just right. Thank you Mesob! Also, the new hibiscus iced tea was quite good and refreshing after slogging around New York City all day!

I was taken all the way out here by some jersey friends when they found out I had never tried Ethiopian. Now I like ethiopian. I started with the beef sambussa - they have a veg one too. Very tasty. Somewhat similar to indian samosas...and I wonder if I'd prefer the veg, as I do with those. We shared the vegetarian sampler as an entree. It was plenty of food for all of us. They serve you this giant round sourdough flatbread with each of your items spooned out onto it (separately)...and more of the bread on the side to eat it with. This is entirely finger food. The bread is quite delicious, unlike any other I've had, and each item we got was a nice unique flavor. They seem to love lentils here, but that works - I do as well. It's not the most comfortable restaurant, I noticed, but the service was alright and the food was amazing - and it introduced me to an entirely new cuisine which I can now enjoy.

Hand down one of my FAVORITE restaurants of all time. I've had my fair share of wonderful cuisines and while Ethiopian food is on the top of my list regardless, Mesob is the best Ethiopian food that I've ever had. Everyone says the best Ethiopian is usually in DC, but honestly, I found that this gem of a restuarant in Montclair beats DC Ethiopian restaurants by a long shot. What's so great? The service is wonderful. I've been there at least five or six times and always had friendly warm service. It has a nice warm decor with traditional Ethiopian artwork and a nice comfortable homey feeling to it. If there's only two of you, you can even ask to sit on the traditional straw stools that they have up in the front of the restaurant. Additionally, the food is always up to par and has the right combination of spices and flavors that really allow you to savor every single bit. I've enjoyed just about any vegetarian option I've had as well as the Shrimp tibs. The shrimp is essentially a staple in my meals there. I will warn you though, if you're taking friends for the first time make sure you warn them that you will be all sharing a large plate and eating with your hands. Traditional Ethiopian food is served on a large piece of bread called Injera and laid in a circle on a large platter. Then you have some extra injera on the side that you use to pick up the food and eat. You can't get more authentic than this folks. So yes, in case you didn't notice, I LOVE Mesob :)

I've been on an Ethiopian food mission for the past year and Mesob continues to come out on top. In comparison to recommended restaurants in Ferndale, MI, DC, New Brunswick, I still think Mesob comes out on top for the following reasons: 1) Atmosphere: Walking into this restaurant, you are hit with the wonderful smell of the spices. It is dimly lit, romantic, and well decorated. 2) Food: The food here has by far been the best seasoned Ethiopian I've tasted. The wait staff is hit or miss, but the owners are great and friendly. I consider this a place you spend the night in, enjoying some wine and taking your time eating. If you are in a rush, I don't recommend eating here. Mesob is still the best Ethiopian I've had and what's even better is that I can walk here!!

Visited for the first time and while I have had Morrocan food in LA in the past this was my first foray into Ethiopian cuisine. Honestly while the food was ok and tasty I was put off by the texture of the bread. Not really bread as far as I am concerned, more like a moist sponge. The texture was unappealing. There were 14 small dishes in our sampler, meat and veggie and while there is variation and choice, nothing really stood out as exceptional or memorable. Again not bad but nothing to write home about. Service was excellent friendly and helpful.

Besides creating tasty authentic Ethiopian dishes, Mesob is a great place to meet friends. It is spacious, well appointed, and the staff is well trained and attentive without being overbearing. It's also an excellent place to meet because their menu serves both carnists and vegans. In fact I hear they have a seperate kitchen for the vegan foods.

This is the best Ethiopian restaurant that I have been to in the NY, NJ area. I would travel here every weekend if I could. The service is slow, but that's not always a bad thing. Especially when it gives me time to digest the goodness that I've devoured. The food is delicious. You really can't go wrong with any of the dishes, especially the portobello mushrooms. There are three different selections for spicyness and I would definitely recommend the medium, to enjoy the flavor of the dish. My second favorite is the beef shiro. Slamming. Injera. Slamming.I've been there two weeks in a row and I would keep going. The best part about it is that you can grab a coupon off restaurant.com , and get more food for your buck. I have absolutely no complaints about this place. Never thought that I would say that.

I've been here a few times and everything is great! The ambiance, location and staff bring me back for more. I always get the vegetarian sampler and I am always pleased.

Went here with a group of friends, and it was pretty good! It was my first time trying Ethiopian food, so I was quite excited. We ordered about 4-5 main entrees with of veggie dishes sides. My favorite was the cubed beef and cabbage & potatoes... sooo good! Service was really good... the waitress kept bringing us more bread, and we ate them so fast each time! A bit on the expensive side, but nevertheless, we'll be coming back!

Stated from the start, Mesob is an attractive restaurant offering very good Ethiopian food and the hospitality of a warm and gracious owner and staff. It is the ideal place to be introduced to the unique flavors and rituals of Ethiopian dining, but certainly a restaurant to return to as well. To the uninitiated, Ethiopian food embraces some flavors which-- while being completely enjoyable-- are unfamiliar to newbies. The meal is eaten by tearing strips of a soft and fluffy bread (injera; also unique) and scooping up various stews from a communal platter. Like Indian food, Ethiopian food is not "eaten with the eyes first;" it is visually unappealing. This said, taking the initial plunge into an Ethiopian feast-- without plates or silverware-- is an experience. The folks at Mesob are helpful and understanding, and fellow diners who have already been captured by the lure of its ritual often watch the newbies for that glimmer of pleasant discovery. The menu at Mesob contains a few more options than those of the nearby (S Orange) Ethiopian spots, and food which-- on a dish-by-dish basis-- is usually as good. The Ethiopian dining experience is enhanced by group dining, as a fuller array of vegetables and sides may be enjoyed by all. Mesob has the ability to accommodate larger groups than does its local competition. Also, what the Mesob experience brings is more of an attractive, fine-dining setting at the (literal) expense of higher prices.

Awesome! Great food and service, remember to BYO. Also, it's delicious, but beware the sponge bread - if you overdo it you will feel like you just ate 30 pancakes.

Went here with co-workers last month after trying an Ethiopian restaurant in DC. This place is fantastic. If you have never had this type of food before, definitely get a platter to share. They have a meat platter and veggie option. Fantastic Food!

I can't speak to the quality of their meat dishes, but from a vegetarian's point of view this place is wonderful. Get the vegetarian combo, it is at least three full meals for one person.

Update: 1/2/08: Was here about 2 weeks ago. Much better experience. Avoided the mixed platter this time. Had the shrimp (hot) w hich was excellent. Mushrooms are really good and meaty. Chickpea biscuits are also a highlight. Yummy in my tummy. One downer is that the service is super slow. So slow that I wanted to order some tea/dessert but there was no one to be found. It also took quite a long time to get them the check. People seem to disappear for large chunks of time. Really 2.5 stars - somewhere between "meh I've experienced better" and "A-OK" I was really excited to come here again. So much so that I had planned to come to Mesob for my post-bar exam dinner. I couldn't make it that day so I went today. I was really disappointed. I was here in September and it was great. Today, not so much. Service: The restaurant had only a few tables with patrons, yet the service was super slow (aside from our meal coming out lightning fast). I asked for paper napkins which never came. Maybe twice during the whole meal someone came to check up on us once to ask us if everything was okay, and then to ask if we needed more injera. I asked for more injera as we had run out, but then had to wait another 5 minutes for it to come. (no, they dont make it to order). I wouldnt mind waiting except that our food had come out lukewarm (if that) already, so now the food was just plain cold to go with the cold injera. Not so great on a rainy night. At the end I asked for a menu so I could order some tea, but it took someone so long to come back, I decided to just get the check instead. We waited awhile again for the check to get picked up from the table (it was, however, returned 1 minute later which was nice). Food: Anyway, the food was good, but not great. I was suspicious because it was brought out maybe only 5-7 minutes after we ordered AND it was lukewarm. We had the meat sampler platter. I think maybe this food was already prepared and they just reheated. Next time I think I will try to order something a la carte rather than get a platter. I noticed that other patrons who had ordered from the regular menu waited considerably longer for their food, which arrived with steam coming off the top. Besides my suspicions of reheating or just not freshly made food, I think the food was not as good quality as before. This time, the food seemed a little bland. Maybe I had built this place up in my head over many months. I will try Mesob again. The shrimp looked really good.

This is one of my favorite places in montclair.. A bit overpriced but I think the atmosphere is worth it in comparison to some of my other Ethiopian/etrian experiences.

  • enid s.

Loved the atmosphere and the concept but was not crazy about the food. Had no idea there were so many ways to prepare chic peas and lentils. Not sure I will go back simply because it did not appeal to my taste buds. I could see many of my family and friends loving the place, though.

Fantastic Ethiopian fare. Courteous service (though the wait staff is in no hurry to get the food!). Went with a group of folks from office - all of them felt nice about the experience and taken care of. Will go again....

Delish! Always had a pleasant experience there. Food is tasty, atmosphere, decor, wait staff is just right. I managed to turn on the pickiest of eaters to Ethiopian cuisine. There is something for everyone.

Mesob was my introduction to Ethiopian food, and as such, I'll forever be a fan. The space is beautifully decorated, with the titular basket tables and carved wood chairs, Ethiopian art on the walls, and a brick-and-cream color scheme. My favorite thing on the menu here is the ingudai tibs, a portobello mushroom dish that's both hearty and refreshing. The butcha, which I believe is made with chickpeas, is also wonderful and light, and I have yet to see it elsewhere. And I can't write an Ethiopian restaurant review without mentioning the miser wat, which is definitely not light, but is delicious and packed with flavor and heat. Honestly, there's very little I've tried here that I didn't adore. My usual order is the vegetable combo, and I always end up stuffed, but still wanting more. I really can't say enough about this food; it's probably my second favorite Ethiopian restaurant, after Meskel in the east village. I've never had trouble with the service here; they're not very fast, but I've never felt neglected or been served food that wasn't at the right temperature.

A great place - a real find. You WILL be happy with your meal. I am not familiar with Ethiopian food so I can tell you if its well ranked according to its peers but I certainly enjoyed my meal. We had the meat sampler which easily filled us both. The spicy stuff is quite spicy!!!! The chicken and lamb tasted great! We brought our own wine a nice Bordeaux and it fit every element of the meal. THE SERVICE IS WONDERFUL. They are all very very attentive and you wont wait more than a few min for any request to be fulfilled. Prices were fair, portions were hefty, service as excellent, food was yummy. All together I'll highly recommend this one. Enjoy Yelpers!!!!

This was my second time here, after having it two years ago and missing it the last time i was in the area. My friend and I got the meat sampler, and everything was great minus the chicken which was a bit dry. My favorite was the cubed beef, I don't recall the actual name though. The service was extremely friendly, but there was about 10 minutes were we were all suffering because we were out of water and the food was pretty spicy. Overall this place was worlds better than the other ethiopian place I'd been, but I feel like there is better out there.

  • Ethan B.

This place always impresses. I've had every item on the vegetarian menu and it's all good. Friends have all liked the vegetarian and non-vegetarian items alike. I always get the butcha appetizer (like hummus but chunkier and with little pieces of onion and hot pepper) and kemem shai (Ethiopian tea). You also get 2 vegetable sides with each meal or can get a sampler platter for 2 (which is good for people new to Ethiopian food). This place also smells really good (like Ethiopian spices) and the service has always been good, even with a toddler in tow. It's never too crowded at lunch, but gets packed at night, especially weekends, so I'd make a reservation. It's very roomy inside, so you never feel like you're sitting on top of anyone. The only negative is that is a little more expensive than some other similar places, but I think it's worth it. If you've never had Ethiopian food, give it a try, it won't disappoint.

I LOVE this place! The culture is wonderful - the food is SO unique and tastes amazing - and the staff is ultra friendly! A great place to go with friends - close friends though because you will eat with your hands :) Also - if you have a gluten allergy you can call them up a few days in advance and ask for them to make you some gluten free bread - perfect!

The food is excellent and authentic! I had the vegetarian platter and the coffee (must try!). They brought the freshly roasted beans to the table and I could smell them for minutes after they left to grind and brew the beans. The service was excellent and the atmosphere is great.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to eat drawer liner? Order the injera. Otherwise the food was not terrible but not great. The injera was the most memorable part of dinner. You might call it the cornerstone of the whole Mesob experience. I say that because you are not provided with forks or knives and are required to use it scoop up the food. This is pretty fun at first. But after eating it for a while, I began to picture myself chewing on the liner in my kitchen cabinets. I am a vegetarian but prefer vegetables in a form other than an oily chickpea mush. I don't think I'm going back to Mesob unfortunately. But I wouldn't discourage others from giving it a try.

  • Mia L.

I had my first Ethiopian food experience here...and I LOVED it!! The food was great. I went for lunch in the middle of the week (I believe it was a Tuesday), so it wasn't crowded at all and we were able to pick where we wanted to sit. This is definately a place to go with a group of friends because everything is shared and you eat with your hands. Also, be sure to give the coffee a try. They roast the coffee beans there and bring it out to the table for you to get a smell of the roasting beans before they make your coffee.

Not that I'm aware of any other Ethiopian food in the area, but Mesob is excellent. The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the wonderful smell of spices. The injera is huge and just sour enough. On a cold, blustery night like tonight, I wanted spicy lamb! I usually go for vegetarian at Ethiopian restaurants, but not this time. I couldn't help drooling over plates I saw go by me. It's BYOB, meaning a bottle of wine would have been perfect. Unfortunately, I was traveling for work. It's not recommended that you go to this Ethiopian restaurant alone. It's too much food! I'll definitely add this to one of my favourite spots for the Clifton area.

A very charming find in Montclair. Food is flavorful and unique, the ambience is appropriate and the wait staff is friendly and smiley and attentive. Germophobes beware, there are no utensils involved with Ethiopian fare... You'll be using your hands only! Being East Indian, I felt right at home here in that respect. Love it, would like to come back here soon.

I had the great pleasure of getting my first Ethiopian cuisine experience from Mesob, and what an absolute delight! Four of us split the vegetarian sampler, and I'm still left dreaming about it. The spices and flavors were so amazing and extremely fresh. I can't wait to go back!

Best Ethiopian food between Seattle, Washington DC and New York. Great atmosphere, excellent selection of vegetarian and meat dishes, served on tasty injera. (I don't usually love injera because it's either too mushy or too sour, but this was delicious!)

im not adventurous when it comes to eating AT ALL. my cousin has been talking about this place for months ranting and raving about it but to be honest, and forgive me if i offend anyone, but when i think Ethiopian i do not think gourmet cuisine. Well i was wrong and extremely ignorant the the fact that gourmet cuisine can be found anywhere with anyone with a passion for food. This place was DELICIOUS!!! I never in my wildest dreams thought so much flavor could be packed in one dish!!! There are no utensils, you eat with their customary bread called injera, it's spongy and looks like a giant crepe, SOOO GOOD! I have INGUDAI TIBS (made to order) portobello mushroom marinated & sautéed with red onions, garlic, jalapeno pepper, fresh tomato, herbs & spices, ATKILT ALETCHA fresh green beans & fresh carrots simmered and YE'SHIMBRA ASSA WAT chick pea biscuits simmered in a spicy sauce. The tibs is the main dish and you pick two sides from anything on the menu. I was blown away. I'm sold and can't wait to go back, the flavors were just bursting! We went for lunch and have 2 kids with us just over a year old and even they liked the food!! Definitely going back, would be a great place to take friends!

My sons and I had dinner at this restaurant for the first time and found it to be quite a local gem. As none of us are experts in the cuisine we followed our Ethiopian waiter's suggestions and ordered the chicken and beef along with various vegetables as our main meal, and spicy mushrooms and something like empanadas as appetizers which were really good. If you check in on Yelp you will get a free appetizer instantly. We liked everything we ate except for the bread, too spongy and bland for our taste. I know this may sound odd, but the meal would be so much better with Pita Bread!!! The restaurant and bar decor is quite beautiful (upscale African) and its BYOB and the prices are quite reasonable. Reservations can be made on Opentable.

First, the food hear is fairly good. Don't let my star rating food you. This restaurant just failed to live up to my expectations. 1) There's no liquor license here. Needless to say, you will not be ordering Ethiopian beer here. 2) The kitfo costs $20.95. Kitfo is one of my two favorite dishes. I've never seen it sold for more than $13.95 and usually $11-13. 3) it's the smallest kitfo dish that I've ever received. Again, don't let me scare you. If you've never had Ethiopian, come here and have a wonderful dinner. If you're an avid Ethiopian food eater like I am, skip this place and have Ethiopian next time.

This was the first time I had Ethiopian food. My husband and I are happy we finally decided to give it a try. Since this was new to us, we decided to try the sampler dishes. We ordered the Sampler Appetizer which was 5 different vegetarian type dishes...we are NOT vegetarians but we did enjoy the appetizer. The appetizer included separate small dishes of the following: 1- chickpeas grounded with spices 2-portebella mushrooms in marinated in a spicy sauce - really spicy 3-lentils mixture 4-tomatoes mixed with bread 5-farmers cheese, spicy They serve is with rolls of a crepe like bread, that you eat with the Appetizers. No Forks. As an Entree we ordered the Meat Platter. It came with 5 different meats and you can choose 3 vegetarian sides: Everything is in a sauce..and they give you some mild, some spicy, so in between. 1-Mild ground beef 2-Spicy ground beef - really spicy 3-Cubed ground beef - really spicy 4-Chicken tid bits - mild 5-Lamb - medium spicy..my favorite of all the meats, next time I will order this by itself. For the Vegetable sides we got a potatoe in spicy sauce, collard greens, and lentil mix. All very good but the lentil mix was too spicy for me, but my husband like it very much. Last but no least for dessert I ate the Chocolate Espresson Torte...wow and amazing. So delicious that I wish I had the whole cake to take it with me home. All in all VERY tasty! However service was slow, but I only saw 3 servers and the restaurant was almost full on a Wednesday night. That's a very good sign when a restaurant is full especially on week day. Prices are not on the casual side, total bill was $75 for an appetizer, entree, and we shared dessert. No drinks, just water. If I find another Ethiopian place with much cheaper prices I may visit more often. At this price range maybe every 2 months might work for my budget.

I have been to Ethiopian restaurants all over the East Coast and Mesob is at the top of the list. The food, the servicee, the atmosphere is csecond to none. We always to Mesob on Valentine's Day, a special treat. Please-- give it a try. You can select anything from meat to seafood to vegetarian and the result is always the same: excellent!

This might be my favorite restaurant. Always get the vegetarian sampler. I'm vegan, so it's great that they let you know they don't use eggs or dairy in any of the vegetarian dishes. I've been here so many times and have never been disappointed. In fact, each time I go, I wonder why I don't go more often. An amazing plus is their vegan chocolates they offer for dessert. It's byob so I'm also a fan of that. I have only great things to say about mesob!

We came here only for the sole reason that it had one of the highest rating on Yelp and all of us in the group never ate Ethiopian food. I don't think we really knew what was in store for us, but we got a quick dose once we walked in. It was something that I have never seen before - All the tables had these huge flat breads that took up the whole table and it was filled will various types of meat, chicken, seafood, veggies, etc (all minced). To be honest, it didn't look very appetizing and I was getting a bit nervous..but I figured I am here, I might as well try (everything) out. Side Note: I checked into Yelp and the best thing happened...my check-in automatically prompted a coupon for a free appetizer for that night. Awesome! What a great way to make your customer happy as soon as they walk in the door. Anyway - back to the food....We decided to get the appetizer and dinner samplers so we can all share the food and experience each item they had to offer. And I have to say - I was shocked on how good it was. It may not look appetizing, but it is packed with flavor and delicious. So if you have never been here, come here and get the samplers you will not be disappointed. PS - The people who work there are super friendly and take the time to explain to you what you are eating and how everything works :-)

We went before a concert at the Welmont on a Friday night. It became very crowded so I would recommend making a reservation. The staff were friendly and very attentive. The restaurant is BYOB and there is a decent liquor store close by. The food was amazing and the inerja was perfect!!! We had the lamb, spicy beef and the ground beef all three were amazing.

Great Ethiopian Restaurant in Montclair. There is food is sort of similar to Indian food, where you have to eat your food with Naan. The one thing to remember is that this place is BYOB, so dont forget your choice of beverage.

If you've never had Ethiopian food, please try Mesob. My wife first went with friends and told me how good Mesob was, I was like, Ethiopian? Really? Meh I dont know. But I said what the heck and went with her some time after that, and wow, it was great! We've now been coming here for years! Wait staff is always so friendly, and the food is always delicious.

We invited my family here to announce our engagement. Unfortunately the engagement took a back seat to the amazing food. 7 of us split samplers for 6 people. The waiter was helpful in describing the dishes and spiciness. Everything was great although I was a tiny bit disappointed with the chick pea biscuits (I had imagined something else). We rotated the dishes twice throughout the meal to keep the variety on each side of the table "fair". Decor was nice and intimate. If you byob from the liquor store around the corner, don't get the honey wine that they suggest. It was entirely too sweet and ended up being wasted. I saw some fancy looking coffee coming out towards the end of the meal and will have to try it next time. We will definitely be back.

My first experience with Ethiopian food was at Ethiopian Diamond in Chicago. Suffice it to say, it's hard to beat... Mesob had some big shoes to fill! The verdict: not bad. We got our food pretty quickly, and the staff was unobtrusive but friendly. We ordered a meat sampler for 2, which probably could have comfortably served 3. The more I ate, the more sour the injera seemed to become, until it was almost an awkward mixture of sour, salty, and sweet. But not being an Ethiopian food connoisseur, I'm not sure if it's supposed to evolve like that. Kind of like trendy clothes from H&M - by the time they start falling apart, your inner fashionista says they were due for retirement anyway. The food at Mesob tasted so good initially that I was full by the time it got funky. I could be talked into going there again, but I won't rush back. Though it was good food, I was disappointed, having expected something great like I discovered my first time.

My lady and I love this place. Aside from the beautifully decorated restaurant the food is completely authentic. We always order and share a meat sampler for two and have developed a slight addiction to the food here. We love how they utilize social media and the service is always first rate. A must for any Montclair dining excursion.

Ate here very recently and enjoyed my meal. My wife and I were able to walk in off the street and get a table for two (luckily) within 30 minutes...they really went above and beyond to accommodate us. The food is a bit on the spicey side, which my wife loved...I have a bit less tolerance, so wasn't as enthused, but if you go in expecting interesting, unique, and food spiced as advertised, you will be happy. We ordered the sampler platter (had beef, chicken, lamb, and vegetable dishes)...I was expecting to be focused on the lamb, but was pleasantly surprised to find I took to the vegetable dishes.

My wife and I love foods from around the world, but, somehow, we never got around to trying Ethiopian cuisine-- until tonight. A friend recommended the place, so off we went, and we had a very satisfying dinner, full of flavors and textures unlike other cuisines we've tried. Perhaps you could place it somewhere between Morrocan, Middle Eastern, and Indian food, but that would only be an approximation. Anyhow, being no experts in Ethiopian food, we can only say that everything we tried was tasty and enjoyable. For those not familiar with Ethiopian restaurants, no silverware is used-- you scoop up the food with an incredibly thin, spongy bread called Injera, and this can be a bit challenging at first. One drawback to all of this is that it's easy to fill up on too much bread, so you needn't order a lot of different dishes, but like food mavens, we did just that. We started with the appetizer sampler (all vegetarian), which was wonderful, and seemed like a meal in itself. Then it was on to two entrees (each is served with two vegetables) and the whole meal is served on a giant, round plate covered in one giant, round Injira, with more Injira on the side for scooping. We asked for the Shrimp Tibbs (don't ask) to be moderately spiced, and the chicken we chose came in a mild, flavorful sauce with one hard boiled egg. The four vegetables on the platter were delicious as well. Service here was perfect, and the staff are happy to explain all that needs explaining. The bill, with drinks, tip, and tax, came to $80 for two. Next time, when we go back, we may order a little less food, if we can resist.

We have always been very happy with this restaurant. We always get a sampler between the two of us and always leave very satisfied. The service is always prompt and courteous. • C M.

Overall a good restaurant. Pros - BYOB or Wine, they give you the glasses Tasty food, there is not much room to go wrong. Good ambiance Helpful staff Cons - Entrees are expensive (could cost you $30 along with a non-alcoholic beverage) Meat Platters - you cannot substitute one of the sampler with something else, you can only double or triple the ones listed. If you share an entree or single sampler then there extra $7 charge for other person. Suggestion for the restaurant - It would be good to pictures of the dishes on the menu, to get some idea of how the dish might look. Might help to have slightly brighter lighting, it was hard to see the food properly. Other If you like Thai, Indian, Mexican spicy then order spicy option, as their spicy is not too spicy relatively.

I love Mesob! My husband found this place for us several months ago. I'm a vegetarian and he is not, so sometimes it is difficult for us to find a place to eat that has good veggie and non-veggie food! Usually it's one or the other. I'm so glad he found this gem though! We've been here several times, all very pleasant. The staff is very kind and polite. The only time we had a problem with slow service was because the fire alarm went off in the building as we were waiting! Obviously not their fault. It smells wonderful inside and the food is always delicious. What really inspired me to give them such a rave review happened last weekend. We had just been brushed off at another restaurant (we had told them we would wait outside the door for our table since it was so crowded inside; after 40 minutes we popped our heads in the door only to be told that they "don't call names outside" and they had passed us up). We wandered around for a bit before deciding just to walk over to Mesob. Being a Saturday night, they were PACKED, and when we asked for a table for 4, the waitress said they were completely booked for the night but that she would see what she could do. After a few minutes of talking with her floor manager, they both came over and said they could squeeze us in if we didn't mind being done in an hour. We had somewhere to be anyway so it was perfect! We all ended up having a really nice dinner and the staff was really gracious and accommodating. They could have just brushed us off like the other restaurant - after all, it wasn't like they were hurting for business! But they fit us in anyway and it was a great night. Thank you so much, Mesob!

First ... the explanation. I would give this place 4 stars for being unique. It was interesting... The food itself, maybe a 3. This was my first time having Ethiopian food. The restaurants was fragrant with unfamiliar scents. I had the meat sampler. Honestly...I was reminded of Indian food. Except the bread... the bread was a completely different experience. At first, I liked it... but by the end of the meal, it was just too sour for me. I don't know if I would go back. I just think Ethiopian isn't for my palette. suggestion: I think Ethiopian food is actually better with any other drinks except wine. Wine brings out the sour/acidic nature of the bread and it just becomes too much. Definitely opting for their drinks if I ever go back.

the buticha is the best! i recommend the vegetarian and meat combos. I love that it's byob, especially with so many liquor stores nearby. the ambience is pretty casual but nice and service is a little on the slow side. overall i love it here!

What a wonderful dinning experience!!!! The restaurant is beautiful, the staff is friendly and the food was delicious! The gentleman that seated us explained the menu and answered our questions. It was my fiancée first time eating Ethiopian cuisine and I needed a refresher. We went with the delicious meat sampler and we ordered another side ( the waiter recommended) it was just amazing! The restaurant was packed and the atmosphere was lovely! We will return! Please try it ;)

Mesob, you've absolutely transported me from suburban New Jersey to the wild, exotic landscape of D.C. Yes, that's right, D.C. Someone told me that D.C. has the second largest Ethiopian population next to the country itself. There are some delicious Ethiopian restaurants there, so my injera fix was always taken care of. Since moving further north, I've not found a restaurant of similar quality. I can't say anything about authenticity, never having traveled to the country myself, but Mesob hits all the right notes on what I do know. Namely: The injera was fabulous and the attentive staff made sure our basket was always full, and we found the flavors to be rich and nuanced. Most importantly, I learned something, which is that I actually like mushrooms when they're served just right. We tried the butcha (chickpeas) ingudai tibs (mushrooms) doro aletcha wat (chicken) gomen (collard greens) dinche wat (potatoes), miser wat (lentils) and shiro and kik aletcha (more peas/beans). The mushrooms were by far our favorite. The lentils were also a hit. A helpful hint from friends who've gone here several times: it's a better deal to choose your own meals rather than do the samplers. Also, the portions are a bit small so you'll want to choose several. The injera *is* filling, but you might be disappointed by the entree sizes.

Oh Mesob how I love thee. Really, truly. A groupon brought me here with only one Ethiopian experience under my belt - and this restaurant did not disappoint. A plethora of vegetarian options, a dimly lit airy ambiance, BYOB and unlimited sponge bread. I almost cant finish this review as memories of my meals here make my mouth water. I have consistently shared the veggie platter with one other person and have never been disappointed - rather wonderfully stuffed and satisfied. The food here is rich and comforting and I have yet to try an option that didn't leave me begging for more. It's like the Trevi fountain - once you come you will be returning.

I will definitely go back! This place was so delicious. A friend and I got the Veggie Platter. It consisted of 6 different veggies (potatoes, lentils, green bean/carrot...); some were cold and some were hot but all were seasoned to perfection. This is a no utensil restaurant, so you eat with your hands which makes it an interesting experience! Its a must try place, for sure! I went in on a Friday night at 8pm without a reservation and the staff was great- they got my party of two seated within 20 minutes and it was packed! Very nice staff too!

I'm a regular here, absolutely love this place. The service is great, although on the weekends when it's busy they can slack a little, but the servers are always nice. The food is amazing! For apps I order the mushroom one ( I won't attempt to spell the name) and for dinner my fiancé orders the shrimp Tibs (it's very spicy) and I get the veg sampler platter. It's BYOB, romantic, and all in all a great place. The food has a lot of spices in it so drink lots of water because the next day ull be super thirsty!

Reading other reviews, I was very worried about the level of service we would receive and was waiting for it to be slow. Well they must have listened to people's comments here. The service was outstanding and we went on a busy Saturday night without reservations (90 min wait). Food was also excellent. This was our first visit and went for a vegetarian and a meat sampler and asked for recommendations from our server. He steered us in the right direction and I would recommend the samplers for first timers. The food was a nice mix of spice and heat with more than enough for 2 of us. We also "checked in" using the iPhone Yelp Ap and got a free appetizer ($6 value). We will be headed back in the near future with reservations next time.

Wow. This was a delicious meal. I have had Ethiopian food before, and this restaurant blew everything I had thought of the cuisine out the door! I never knew eating with just your hands could be such an experience. Remember to order the Ethiopian coffee at the end of the meal! They bring out roasting coffee beans for you to smell. It also gives quite the jolt.

After having walked by and peeked in several times, we finally had the guts to walk in and try it; and definitely glad we did. It was one of the most "interesting" meals I've experienced in Montclair. Nice atmosphere. The wait staff was Ethiopian and knew the food they were serving. The decor also looked like it was in keeping with traditional Ethiopian decor. When we got the menus they were pretty gross with food stains, which put us of a little. Anyway...since it was our first time, what's better than samplers. We went for the appetizer sampler and meat and vegetarian samplers for our entrees. Everything was served with this gummy, rolled up bread, which was not my favorite, but different and edible. We were told to put the different "thick stews" into the bread and eat with hands. Made it fun, but not a first date spot. haha. The desserts didn't look like anything special and we were full, so we skipped it. I will most likely go back, but won't become a regular.

There are just too many things wrong with my visit. The food took one full hour and was room temperature. I had to go up after 10 mins of sitting around to get service, I mean, no one came over after getting seated. Of all the Ethiopian places I've been to in NJ and NYC, this one is mediocre and I have to pass. I suggested it because I love ethiopian food and was never so embarassed. The service was sooooo slow, it was the longest 2.5 hour dinner and the food was room temperature after an hour wait for it.

Simple. Great food. Vegans don't have to be weary they know what we are talking about. For Ethiopian the service was above normal

  • Dan B.

The food is really exceptional. It is great if you are not in a rush. Most of the staff is very friendly. There is a special on the menu that is a two person sampler, "Taste of Mesob", that lets you do a nice amount of picking and choosing. It was definitely enough food and it was tasty. I originally left a very negative review about the service at this place, but was pleased when I received a direct response from the owner. They have since improved greatly in terms of service and hospitality. It was a 360 degree turnaround when we came in and they made sure to bring wine glasses and even a scotch glass with ice on the side. This was excellent and shows that the management took the criticism and directly made the needed improvements in response. If there is one thing that still bothers me, it is that no one is ever there to welcome you when you walk in. You almost always need to get their attention. The reception should be set up right near the door and tended to. Even a sign telling you where to wait would be a decent improvement.

I recently went to this place, when my friends decided to try something new. I was a little skeptical at first having such a "mild" palette, I guess you could say I really love meat and potatoes, but this changes my outlook on different cuisines. We decided to order on the menu "A taste of Mesob" for 2 since it basically is 1 of everything from the menu. The taste for 2 was more than enough food for our group of 3, who have a decent appetites. You get 2 appetizers and basically 1 or 2 of each type of meat (chicken, beef, lamb, shrimp) and 3 side dishes. You get to pick most of the dishes. We had the waiter pick them, and his pick were good choices. For apps we had the the veggie and meat sambussas, which is like a flaky empanada. It was hot, crispy and addictive. Then for the main courses, they serve you this bread which is soft and crepe-like, and kinda had a sourdough taste, which went well to scoop up the hearty stews and sides. My favorite being the ingudai tibs which is sauteed mushrooms. I love meat but it was hearty and buttery. My group also loved the michet abish aletcha, which was the beef, it was a must as soon as I saw the words clarified butter:) Our table was stuffed and satisfied, and was a good deal. Overall, the service was helpful and friendly, and the food was good and satisfying. Its a fun experience not using utensils and scooping up food with bread, definitely a must try.

OK, so i'm the zillionth person to review Mesob. There is not much that I can say that has not already been said, but the service and the food here are excellent for vegetarian and non vegetarian diners alike. You should eat here, often.

This is my favorite restaurant in Montclair! I go here often with family and friends, just because or to celebrate, because they all love this place, too! The service is always warm and welcoming. How attentive the wait staff is depends on who you get, as it is a family run restaurant, and some are more attentive than others. But everyone is polite and friendly. The food is pretty amazing! I have never had a bad experience. The stewed lamb(lega tibs) and beef kitfo dishes are the best, in my opinion. they have a vegetarian menu that is filling and delicious as well. I wouldn't go for the seafood dishes. They can be a little on the dry side. If you go, it is totally worth the wait to end your meal with a pot of traditional Ethiopian coffee. They roast the beans when you order, and bring them out for you to smell (apparently a tradition). So delicious and fun, and a great ending to the meal! The prices are moderate - about what you would expect to spend in Montclair without being overpriced. The atmosphere is so pretty! Ethiopian paintings and fabric art. It is a really fun place for dinner, and I always look forward to going! I am a regular customer!

I am a HUGE fan of dining in Montclair. I love BYOB's and there's plenty of them to choose from. I have been to Makeda in New Brunswick, but I liked Mesob much better. The food is amazing and the atmosphere more lively than Makeda. Definitely try it. The staff will help you try new dishes and introduce you to the cuisine.

I've been eyeballing this restaurant for a few months, since it opened, and finally got a chance to tuck inside for dinner with my wife a few weeks ago. I loved it. I'm already kind of a fan of injera food, because I like to eat with my hands and make a mess, and this was quite a treat. The atmosphere of the place is really calm, warm, and inviting. The tables are small and nicely spaced, and even when the dining room is crowded you feel like you're in your own little booth. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and are happy to explain anything on the menu. The food itself is delicious, prepared with the love and care of native Ethiopian cooks. The owner of the restaurant told us about her cookbook and described how the particular chilis that they use are prepared specially in Ethiopia by drying and soaking and roasting for weeks on end. The bread they serve is beautifully soft and has its own kind of fermented zing. It is always uniformly bubbly and doesn't have any of those hard, dried, crusty bits around the edges. It reminds me of the suppleness of a calf's skin, or some large, fluffy creature's stomach lining. Yeah, I know that doesn't sound so great, but trust me on that one--stomach lining is pretty soft. An important note: Mesob is BYOB, so if you want a glass of wine with your meal, bring it yourself. There is no corkage fee. And for a good selection of wine and beer and spirits, try Amanti Vino, on Church St, about a block and a half away.

Great food and atmosphere!! Can get quite loud during dinner service, but the staff and food more than make up for that. Also, BYOB, which you can't beat! I generally stick with the Mesob sampler, but all of their dishes are delicious.

Went to Mesob tonight with friends to celebrate a birthday. WOW! Their food is absolutely delicious. We had the vegetarian samplers and plenty of bread (they walked around to make sure the baskets were always full). Favorites were the shiro watt, gomen watt and mesir watt. Fun cozy atmosphere with great service. Owner walks around to check in on customers, which I love to see. Definitely a "go to" place for our group of friends. I've had Ethiopian food before, but this place was far superior. Vegetarians and vegans will have no problem ordering but there are meat dishes available too if you wish.

I'm new to Ethiopian food, and I have to say, I really enjoy it. I'd liken it to Indian food, without the curry. I brought some hand sanitizer too, since Yelpers stated that you eat with your hands (fun!). We ordered the farmer's cheese and injera for our app, and it was just fine, but I wouldn't order it again. The injera is spongy and has a tangy flavor, which I didn't expect, but I learned to enjoy it since it's served with everything. We shared the meat sampler (which comes with 5 meats and 3 choices of veggie dishes - don't remember all the veggies we got) and it was delish. The lamb was my favorite. The beef cubes were a bit tough, but the chopped up meats were soooo good. I would stick to the lamb though. And I do remember enjoying the spiced up veggies. This place is definitely worth a try, although I have to visit other Ethiopian places before I decide which is my fave. And I heard about Tej, but since they don't serve it I'll have to find some place that does. But thank you Mesob for the tasty introduction.

mesob is pretty big, very clean, nicely decorated w/ african/ethiopian decor and the staff are all very kind. this is more of a family or date kind of restaurant which fits in montclair, a very suburban area. menu is a bit pricier and more limited then other ethiopian places i've been to in nyc, dc and miami. if i was already in montclair, i would definitely eat here but i would not travel here specifically to eat here.

Great ethnic good; prompt and friendly service. BYOB! We came in without a reservation after a movie -- the staff appeared stunned that we did not have a reservation, but they did find us a table within ten minutes; I guess it is better to call ahead and make a reservation. Be prepared to eat with your hands.

Been going to mesob for abt 2 years. Love the food and the staff are very friendly. Have the vege platter when we're here. Must haves are the shiro and the ingudai tibs. Also delicious is the farmers cheese appetizer. Absolutely yummy. Highly recommend this place

Yes, the atmosphere is nice, but the service was shotty with LONG waits (we missed our movie) and an incorrect order. Although less of a "date" atmosphere, Lalibela in South Orange is FAR superior Ethiopian food (with larger portions, kinder service, and less expense to boot!)

I really like the communal dining experience when eating Ethiopian. Mesob is good and the staff is very friendly. However, I've had Ethiopian food elsewhere and it's been better. I had some kind of beef dish which was a bit like eating a slightly spicy sloppy joe. I went for my birthday one year and they brought me out a free dessert cake, very much appreciated. Mesob is a quality dining experience but it's a little bit more than I'd like to pay.

This is a great restaurant to go to as a date or double date. Eating off of a communal plate encourages sharing and hospitality...plus eating with your fingers slows everybody down. I found that we had time to relax and enjoy our food with plenty of opportunities for conversation. The wait staff was very friendly, unobtrusive, and easygoing. It is BYOB. I made our reservation online earlier that day and the restaurant was full when we got there so I would definitely recommend this.

Yes, if you're in the mood for Ethopian, this is the only option in town, but having had Ethopian elsewhere, I'd say this is still a very good bet. I find the prices to be a bit on the high side of $$, but the quality is solid, atmosphere is nice, and service is very good.

This place is awesome. The service, the food, and the ambiance were all excellent. A bunch of us shared the meat combination platter for 3, and it ended up being so much food! I had read prior reviews so based on that, we ordered ingunai tibs, which was really tasty. Most of the meats were really delicious, especially the cubed beef one. The injera bread just kept coming, although like others have said, it is pretty easy to fill up on that. As we were paying, they brought out fresh coffee beans that they were roasting, which seemed like a pretty cool idea. I think next time we go, we'll be ordering coffee and desserts. I would definitely recommend making a reservaton because this place was packed on Saturday night. Also, don't forget to byo. Overall, a great experience!

Yum! Definately an experience for the adventurous tastebud. I love teff bread, and the endless variety of condiments to wrap into it. The fruit shakes are addictive too. Really fun eating experience and I concur- the staff there are as friendly and welcoming as they get.

4.5 stars for the food and atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated tastefully and beautifully, and is clean, fragrant, and cozy. The food is always wonderfully flavorful and I appreciate that the veggie dishes are vegan. The Shrimp Tibs are to die for, and on the veggie side I love the Miser Wat (lentils simmered in sauce) and Tikil Gomen (cabbage and potatoes.) Unfortunately, the service is not up to par. The staff is friendly enough, but often there are not enough servers to handle the number of customers. We've repeatedly had very long waits just to order or to receive our bill. The worst experience for us was during one of the monthly Sunday brunches. The sign in the window, all of the flyers on the tables, and even their Facebook page all advertised a $24.95 brunch sampler for 2, which we ordered. However, the bill showed a $25.95 charge. When we brought this to the attention of our server, he first told us it was tax (it was not - tax was separate) and then after several runarounds informed us that it was a mistake but they could not honor the posted price. We dropped the issue since it was not worth making a scene over $1, but the experience left a very bad taste in our mouths after what had been a pleasant meal. This type of bait-and-switch seems unethical regardless of the monetary amount, and it's very disappointing to feel that Mesob values their customers less than an extra $1. Mesob was one of my favorite restaurants in the area, but I will be looking elsewhere next time. Edit: Received a very prompt and gracious response from owner Berekti apologizing for the mistake after I posted this review. Will update the review if we visit again... Mesob really does have great food and hopefully can remedy these unfortunate service lapses.

After a long 20 minutes of looking for parking on the cute, but busy street of Montclair, we arrived at the dimly lit restaurant. To our surprise, it was half filled at 7pm on a Friday night and we were seated immediately despite being late to our 6:30 reservation. It was our first time eating Ethiopian food. We have wanted to try Ethiopian food for a while and going to Mesob ended up being a great decision. Initially, we were a little uncomfortable and surprised that we had to eat with our hands but we got used to it really quickly. Our first dish was an appetizer--- spicy portobello mushrooms and some kind of sour dough wrap. The mushroom was delicious. However, the best part didn't come until our main entree; we ordered a meat platter and vegetarian platter. They were delicious. Our waitress was nice and was very patient with us while making our selections. It's a good thing we got the sampler for our first visit. We selected the lamb, chicken, spicy beef, and mild beef. The meats were very tender and my boyfriend enjoyed every single bite as he finished the entire platter haha! don't remember everything in the vegetarian platter but the chickpeas and "couscous" went really well with the meat. it didn't seem like a lot when the waitress brought the small dishes, but once compiled on one large plate, it was a lot. the food was good. all the spicy dishes were good, but i just like spicy food. At the end of our meal, we ordered the Ethiopian coffee and creme bulee. The creme bulee was the perfect finishing touch to our evening as the sweet, mouth-watering dessert melted into our mouths. The crispy top layer of the creme bulee only added to the richness of the flavor. All in all, the service at Mesob was friendly and the waiters never made us wait. We would definitely go there again if we have the chance because of our favorable experience.

My husband and I are vegetarians and we had no problem finding lots of menu items in Mesob that fit the bill. The food is served on beds of injera a type of spongy bread that tastes like thinly rolled sour dough. If you're finicky about eating with your fingers, spicy food or adventurous dining Mesob is not for you. The lentil and mushroom dishes were delicious. Be warned, the bread adds up. We were stuffed after the vegetable sampler. The hibiscus tea is super refreshing on a hot summer day.

I previously gave this place 5 stars, because I love the food, but I have to downgrade now. Their service is TERRIBLE on busy nights. They just can't seem to handle a full house. If you walk by and see it's over half empty, I highly recommend! But if it's almost full, keep on walking. Our latest visit, the restaurant was 3/4 full. We made a reservation, but after being seated, went 30 min with absolutely nothing. And even after asking one of the staff if someone was coming, we still waited. We eventually had to leave without so much as a glance from someone! This was the second time this happened. Fortunately, it's okay on slow nights.

"I'll try Ethiopian but honestly it doesn't sound like my thing. But I'm open to trying it!" My sister was not enthused, but she didn't have any other ideas on where to eat before the show at the Wellmont Theater (only two blocks away). I was super excited, as it was something out of the ordinary and knew it would be good. We brought beer (it's BYOB); once we were sat, they stored the rest of our beer in their fridge. The dining room is open, warmly lit, and a subtle, spicy smell pervades it. We decided to try "A Taste of Mesob" for three. There were four of us, and, while we didn't understand why they couldn't accommodate the portions accordingly, there was more than enough food for all of us. First up was an appetizer of the farmer's cheese with pepper powder--a spicy feta relative that went well with the injera (served cold; other Ethiopian restaurants serve it warm). We also tried the sambusas, both lentil and meat varieties. Similar to Indian samosas or Arabian sambusak, the fillings were good inside the crisp, pan-fried dough wrapper. When the entree platter came out, our server explained what each course was as she dumped it on the injera-lined platter. Mild chicken with hard-boiled egg, spicy chicken with tomato, jalapeno, garlic and onions, mild lamb, spicy simmered beef, spicy shrimp with onions, jalapeno, tomato and herbs were the proteins; split peas with garlic and onions, cabbage and potatoes, and portobello mushrooms were the vegetarian courses. Some were more successful than others--the Tibs preparation complemented the shrimp perfectly. The spicy beef (Tibs Wat) was by far the standout, as was the chicken (Doro Tibs). The food is reminiscent of Indian, but the flavors and heat are much cleaner. Montclair, NJ is a significant trek from Brooklyn, but we definitely plan to go back.

We had been meaning to try Mesob out for a while - but never got around to it. So finally, on my wife's birthday - we went out - and have loved it ever since! We had never had Ethiopian food before - and were surprised to find how much we loved it! The service was amazing, and the food had such a great distinct taste. We literally can't wait to go again! Oh, and the owner contacted me on Facebook after I'd mentioned Mesob - and invited me back themselves - with a free coffee! If you give this restaurant credit - they will reciprocate!

THE place I go to for Ethiopian!! Every chance I can get to visit friends and family in the northeast, I make it a POINT to go here. Everyone. Needs. To. Make. It here at least once!! The initial smell when you walk in the door will hook you for life.

Living in NYC, I have enjoyed Ethiopian food since 1986 when I was in college and we went to Zulu on upper Amsterdam near Columbia University. Zulu is sadly gone, but now I live in NJ and am thrilled to have found Mesob. The food is delicious, the prices are good (not as dirt cheap as Zulu was, but I'm not a student anymore either). I usually stick to the vegetarian options . .Shiro, spicy lentils, etc, but have also tried some of the meat options, and they are excellent as well. The vegetarian sampler option is a good way to go, but I have also ordered the various vegetarian entrees and each of those comes with 2 sides. So if there is a vegetarian option you just want to try, you can do it with a side. I found that worked out really well for me. Also when I ordered the individual entrees I was sure to get enough of the yummy shiro!! Park in the lot right behind Mesob since street parking can be hard to find.

My first experience at an Ethiopian place was good. Eating with your hands took a little getting used to. I never realized that Ethiopian food could be so spicy. My brother picked this place for his birthday. Since there were four of us we decided to try the Taste of Mesob - it is a sampling of all the food - we get 2 starters, 2 chicken dishes, 2 beef dishes, 1 lamb, 1 shrimp and 3 vegetable entrees. We got it for 3 people even though we were 4 people. The bread they give you is very filling. There was not much left over. The food was good. It is also a BYOB. Our waiter was quite helpful and friendly. Will probably go again.

Come one, come all - a great place for two and even better for groups. Delicious, fresh meats and vegetables cooked to perfection in a wide range of sauces (ranging from mild to spicy). If you're new to Ethiopian food, this is a great place to start. A warning, though - you will be hooked and be a regular in no time. Beef, chicken, lamb, and seafood are available; and a range of vegetable dishes including chickpea, lentil, potato, greens, and more. Newcomers to Mesob will be surprised that you eat with your hands - sort of! You're given delicious Ethiopian style bread called Injera (made of teff flour) to pick the food up with (and the food is served on the same bread - save room to eat the Injera left at the end because it's soaked up the delicious sauce). The restaurant is family owned and they could not make you more welcome. People is what makes a good restaurant great and they have this to spare! So come - and bring your friends - and get ready for a unique, fun, and delicious experience!!!! PS: Ethiopia is where coffee was discovered and is still home to the world's best coffee. Let Mesob make you a pot of coffee - they hand roast the beans to order and will let you smell it first. It's to die for!

I had my first Ethiopian dining experience last night and I am hooked! I didn't experience any of the poor service that others had mentioned. We had the starter sampler which was great because the majority of our group had never tried Ethiopian. We had a group of 7 and got the app to feed 3 and had more than enough left over. For dinner I had the Doro Tibs (chicken) which was delish, with buticha and dinich wat. Everything was great! I can't wait to go back. So much fun, especially with a group!

I love Mesob. The ambiance is so beautiful. Eating here always makes me feel so zen. The service is great - and its really nice that the staff are actually Ethiopian. I like Ethiopian food once in awhile. It is a refreshing change of pace from the usual options of food. The place is either severely understaffed or the waitstaff is inefficient. Service is extremely slow and lacking. It takes awhile to get seated and we waited about 20 minutes before someone showed up at our table. It takes awhile to get anything done. We were going to get dessert but once we got the menus it took awhile before anyone came back so we just got the check. Mesob does have good tasting Ethiopian food and the fresh brewed ice tea is great. The food is on par with other Ethiopian restaurants but since service is so lacking I probably will go somewhere else if I'm craving Ethiopian food.

I hate cinnamon so I'm biased. The place smell like cinnamon and I couldn't take it. Besides that the service was good and the food was ok. Some of the dishes were spicy but I didst mind that. I couldn't get over the fact that your fingers were utensils.

The atmosphere is serene and the waitstaff is friendly and doesn't rush you. They have some pleasant nuances that I've never seen before that I really appreciated. For one, appetizers are served with proportionate 1" rolls of injera instead of full pieces. Simple idea, but adorable and it makes sense. When it comes to your meal, as another added element of service, they place a plate before you consisting simply of a piece of injera and then each selection is served onto it from an individual bowl. Again, not necessary but appreciated. The food isn't as tasty or spicy as my favorite Ethiopian restaurant (Makeda, New Brunswick), but some favorites that stand out are the Butcha and the Miser Wat. Bonus points for having the word vegan printed on the menu for the veggie options.

Delicious food. Authentic Ethopian food. Loved loved the chicken curry dish. The whole experience of eating food with injera was amazing.

I truly can not say enough about Mesob. The first thing I notice is the welcoming atmosphere and hostess. It always has a aromatic fragrance that I believe is their tea. I usually get their meat sampler because I am able to sample 4 stewed meats: mild beef, spicy beef, another type of beef, chicken and lamb along with my choice of 3 veggies. It's all served on the ethiopian styled bread called injera, which you also use as a utensil to eat with. It's delicious. The food is cooked to order is a BYOB restaurant. It's a calm atmosphere and you never feel rushed. Due to the welcoming and calm atmosphere, friendly hostess and waitresses/waiters and superb food, I usually eat here 3-4 times a month. Mesob is a true neighborhood gem.

This is definitely the best Ethiopian restaurant that I've ever been to. The decor is inviting, the service is friendly, and the food is delicious. We always get the vegetarian sampler (the constituents of which are all vegan); the food portions are generous and I always get the Ingudai Tibs(spicy) and the Ye'shimbra Assa. Their injera is much better than what I've had at other places. The beverages are alright, and service can be slow sometimes. I've taken many friends along with me and they all appreciate the wonderfully intimate dining experience that Mesob provides.

I mentioned Mesob in my review of Zoma in NYC, so I figured I owe it to them to come and write a review for this place too... I cannot believe it's true, but it is. Mesob is the best Ethiopian restaurant in the entire Greater New York City area. I know that's quite a claim, but I've tried them all now, and hands down Mesob wins. The food here is fantastic. Great ingredients, plenty of fresh, fluffy injera, and wonderful spices in the stews. The service is friendly, to the point where you actually feel like the place is run by a group of friends. The atmosphere and decor is pretty typically ethnic Ethiopian, which I have to admit is a little nicer than the nouveau-wallpaper magazine Zoma. Plus, it's in Montclair, which means: - It's easy for NJ'ers to get to - easy / free parking - BYOB with friendly provision of corkscrew & glasses If you live in the city, then you'll probably scoff at the idea of going to Montclair for a great meal. But... if you live in NJ, Mesob is proof that you don't have to go into the city to have a fantastic meal.

There are very few restaurants in the area that offer a vegetarian so much variety. This place is great for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. All of the dishes are unique and delicious. It's fun to eat something a little messy with your hands. My only nitpick is that the waitress forgot to bring us the waters we asked for. It most definitely would not stop me from going again.

my favorite restaurant in montclair!! my boyfriend and i use every special occasion as an excuse to go to mesob. the doro tibs (chicken) dish is truly amazing! ingudai tibs (portobello) is also really delicious. every meal comes with 2 veggie sides, and i'm pretty positive i've tried every single one - the best is probably tikil gomen (cabage and potatoes). the ambiance is nice, the staff friendly (but at times a little bit slow or a little bit inattentive, but it definitely doesn't bother me enough to have an unenjoyable experience there). it's somewhat small, so i would make a reservation for a friday or saturday evening during dinner rush, as i probably would for any montclair restaurant on the weekends. the wait can be 1 hour long. byob, so grab a bottle of wine at the liquor store 2 blocks down the street. really cute/different place for a date. also, every friend i've recommended mesob to that has never even had ethiopian food before loved it. all in all... love it love it love it. check out mesob.

Mesob is a beautiful, intimate Ethiopian restaurant with good service and delicious food. It's a great alternative to New Brunswick's Makeda restaurant, which is overpriced and has bad service and oversalted food. The kitfo is wonderful. The waiters are caring yet not obtrusive. It's nice to know that such a restaurant exists in NJ. Before, I had to either go to Washington DC or NYC to get my Ethiopian fix.

mesob was my first ethiopian love... it took me awhile to enjoy the injera bread (at first i didn't like it.) and then i started to visit more ethiopian restaurants, going around like some heathen. finding a place to see if another was truly better. but looking back, after reminiscing about the stews, the romantic foodie in me can always say " i have been blessed and spoiled by my first ethiopian (restaurant)"

My first Ethiopian experience. I guess it was okay but what I didn't know about the "bread" is that it is very light, airy, and SOUR. Not my cup of tea since I was expecting it to be more like indian naan. It's nothing like naan and I couldn't really enjoy the food because I had no other bread to eat it with. But some people really like the bread!

This is the best ethiopian restaurant I have been to. We ordered the meat platter each time, which gives you a great range of flavors. The service is very friendly, though you might have to flag them down occasionally. Inside it is very clean and quite an enjoyable decor. Good for a date, if you go for the BYOB as well.

I know it's not fair to give this restaurant 1 star, they deserve less! I saw a special on groupon and decided to take me son. We use to go there when I was vegetarian/vegan and it was closer than going to the City. I want to say the food was expensive but after eating at Pure Food & Wine this week, I can't complain. I just hate paying a lot for food equivalent to McDonalds! The service was slow. This is not a place for a quick meal and asking questions only delays your order even more. My son ordered 2 appetizers and the vegetarian plate. I wanted a salad, with uncooked veggies. I request a salad with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos peppers. I not exactly sure what I got. I informed the waitress that this wasn't the salad I ordered and there was an unidentified object in it. I was told not to touch it! The mgr told me that was the only salad they serve and to take it or leave it, so I returned it. My son liked the mushroom dish, the other items he was forced to eat. Then there was desert. My son wanted desert but had to go to the bathroom and couldn't stand the wait, so I decided to order for him. I order the almond cake. My son has autism and doesn't talk much. Throughout the meal I question him on how the food tasted. He only commented on the cake. He said the cake was good, it just had hair in it. Gross! He was given another slice which he gladly ate. To my surprise, I was charged $8 for that slice. Unfortuntely, I brought 2 coupons from groupon. My son protested when I told him we may have to go back!

Mesob is ok. It has a great atmosphere and smells amazing, plus it's such a unique place to visit (where else do you eat with your hands besides a sports game?). But I've been to other Ethiopian restaurants, even in NJ, particularly New Brunswick. And I have to say, Mesob just doesn't cut it - it's like Spanish food to me. Really, I could season ground beef and say it's Ethiopian too. It's a neat little place to take someone visiting Montclair, but don't make it a habit. Drive or take the train to New Brunswick and try Makeda Ethiopian!!

My boyfriend and I went here on Friday and we liked it for the most part. I had a 7:30 reservation but we were running late due to there not being much parking in the area. If you're going on a Friday or Saturday night I would recommend giving yourself some time to search for a place to park. However, the staff was really understanding and we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table once we arrived even though the place was super busy. For apps he had the Ye'misir sambussa which was absolutely delicious!!! Reminded me of Indian samosas. I had Kategna (I think that's how it's spelled) which is an Ethiopian bread. It was good but I didn't expect the soft, spongy texture. For our entrees I had Atkilt aletcha with a side of Dinich wat and Difen misir aletcha. The Atkilt aletcha was good, the veggies were slightly overcooked but maybe that's how it's supposed to be? The dinich wat was great..tasty sauce and the potatoes were cooked just right. The difen misir aletcha was good, but my boyfriend's misir wat was better. He had the misir wat which was supposed to be spicy (it wasn't) but it was flavorful. He also had the Buticha and Azifa I think. Hard to keep track of them all..they all sound alike and have similar ingredients. He cleaned his plate and enjoyed himself. :) I think we'd go again but would order a bit differently. It's a great place to try if you're in the mood to be adventurous and try something new. BYOB and be prepared to eat with your hands!

Mesob is amazing. The owner and staff are extremely friendly, accommodating, and helpful. I had been there once before for lunch, and the lunch prices are a great deal. I spent around $14 with tip for a large portion that I ended up finishing for dinner. When I returned last night, it was a last minute decision. The restaurant was packed, but the owner greeted us and promised if the next reservation did not show up in 5 more minutes, we could have their table. They did arrive, but we decided to go buy a bottle of wine (it's byo), and take our chances waiting on another table. When we returned, the owner had a table waiting for us. We ordered the sampler for 2 for $44, and had plenty of food to spare (though we were tempted to finish it all since it was delicious!). It was a sampling of 5 meat dishes and 3 vegetarian sides and plenty injera. Great food, great atmosphere, and great service, all for reasonable prices. I highly recommend Mesob!

Love Love Love Love LOVE MESOB! As a lover of food and especially exotic food, this one is on the top of my list. Friendly staff, quality ingredients and ordering coffee here is quite the experience. They will bring out the coffee beans as they are roasting so that you can see how fresh and authentic they are and take in the aroma.

came in early for lunch and were the only ones there, we ordered the vegetable sampler and the meat sampler as well as their classic shai (tea). all the staff were very pleasant and the atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. the food was very filling and yet wasn't expensive. the only problem for me was that the spongy cake that they give was a bit too acidic/too much vinegar for me, but that's just my personal taste. other than that, i would recommend to others

Having never tried Ethiopian food I had no idea what I was in for. I am an open minded person and always give strange new food a shot. But upon actually trying it, the food didn't seem so strange at all! The flavors blend very nicely! Every dish is seasoned to it's utmost refinement and served upon their soft bread. Some people may be put off by eating with your hands but I didn't care whatsoever and thought it added on to the experience. Plus they will give you utensils if you ask. You are not at Medieval Times for crying out loud!!! Now onto the food! The first dish I sampled was an appetizer known as Timatim Fitfit. This was a combo of diced tomatoes, Jalapenos, garlic, onions, lemon juice, and olive oil. I found this combo to be unique, simple, and very tasteful. After the small appetizer I decided to go with the meat platter to get a nice overview of their meat dishes as well as sample more veggies on the side. The meat platter consisted of a combination of Tibs Wat (beef), Minchet Abish Kay Wat (beef), Minchet Abish Aletcha (beef), Ye'Beg Aletcha (lamb), and Doro Tibs (chicken). Doro tibs chicken and the Ye'Beg Aletcha lamb I liked the best. The others were good as well. And for my sides I got Dinich Wat (spicy potatoes), Misir Wat (split lentils simmered in spicy hot sauce), and Gomen ( simmered collard greens with herbs, spices and mild sauce). I have to say I liked the Dinich Wat the best and will surely be one of my go to sides next time I go here. As said in another review, nothing was super spicy but I liked it that way. I don't always have to eat something so spicy. All other sides were up to par as well. I would recommenced this place to vegetarians/vegans because I would say they take just as much care into cooking their vegetables as well as there meat. I undoubtedly will try there veggie sampler in the future to get a wider spectrum of delicious veggie possibilities. I should also note that the place has fine service who checked up on us quite frequently. They even helped wrap up my leftovers after I fumbled around with them for a bit. That being said, I see no reason for me not to give this place 5 stars!

The delights of Ethiopia can be found at Mesob. Mesob offers a large selection of flavorful starters and appetizers that cause your taste buds to jump for joy. We started off with the Ayib Bemitmita, a cheese and chili pepper concoction that hits your mouth with waves of smooth creaminess and heat. For entree, we ordered the Meat sampler. I highly recommend the sampler, especially if it is your first time eating Ethiopian food. The sampler platter offers two beef dishes, a lamb dish, a chicken dish and a choice of any three vegetarian dishes (we choose the chickpeas, the lentils and the pureed peas). By far the best plate was the lamb; the meat was soft, savory and it's marinade complimented it. Our vegetarian selections were delicious too, however the pureed peas were almost too spicy to be palatable. Overall, we were pleased with the sampler. Mesob offers a dining experience that is unique. Their servers are very kind and will answer any question about the menu. My only gripe with Mesob is that the service is slow.

Mesob is an awesome place! Make sure you are hungry when you get there because it is a lot of food! I'm a vegan so I got the veggie sampler and it was great! The wait staff was wonderful, so was the greater at the door. Wonderful atmosphere, great food, & central location makes this place a win-win. You won't be dissapointed!

I had a great experience here. I've never eaten in an Ethopian restaurant and I loved the fact that I could eat with my hands. I used the bread, or injera, to eat. They bring it along with your meal underneath your entree, but also bring a few extra to get you started. It's so light that I didn't really feel like I was eating bread at all (so, no guilt to all those avoiding carbs). We ordered Ye'siga Sambussa and Timatim FitFit as starters. We ordered off the Vegetarian Entrees and each one gets 2 sides along with it. I ordered the spicy Ingadai Tibs and my friend got Atkilt Aletcha. It's all presented on one huge platter, so it's ideal for sharing. Oh heavens, it was so tasty. It's a BYOB, so my friend told me the bill was far less than $50.00, not including the tip. I would definitely go again.

I had been meaning to try Mesob for years, so when my friend suggested it for one of my rare dinners in Montclair, I jumped at the opportunity. We showed up with our bottle of white wine and were greeted with the warning of a 30 minute wait time. I was dedicated to having an Ethiopian dining experience, so I vowed to wait it out. Shockingly, our table wound up being ready within half of the time. We were given menus and water almost immediately, but the service was terrible for the rest of the evening - brining us a dish for another table, not providing an ice bucket for our wine, etc. The service was worth the loss of one star from the 5-star rating that I would give the restaurant otherwise. The food was simply delicious and better than my previous Ethiopian dinner in the city. Each table received a large round plate of Injera, the spongy bread used to grasp clumps of saucy food by hand. We each picked out own entree and 2 sides, which were all then piled onto the injera. In addition, we received an endless side plate of pre-torn bread to start grabbing up our first few bites, before breaking apart the large pizza dough-style version. I ordered the Doro Tibs as my main dish. The chicken breast had been scalloped, marinated, and sautéed with red onions, garlic, jalapeno pepper, fresh tomato, herbs, and spices. The chicken was a tad dry, but the well-seasoned sauce made up for it. The rich tomato marinade was herbaceous and hearty. My friend had ordered a similar dish but with Cubed Lamb, which was also great, though I felt the chicken was a better fit for the sauce. For sides, I chose the Collard Greens potatoes. The greens were perfectly cooked, and the sauce on the potatoes was a delight. In fact, I was saddened that there were only 3 small pieces of potato in the side dish. The prices were right; the portions were tiny; and the service was spotty, but the flavorful and well-prepared food made this a delightful dinner overall.

I'm a long time patron of this place and have spent many late nights after hours with the owner and staff. I have to say I never tire of the food here! I'm a huge fan of their veggie platter. However, I grew up enjoying the delicacies of Doro Wat and Lega Tibs. Any chance I get I bring everyone I can to this fabulous restaurant.

REVIEW #600! It's your best and only Ethopian restaurant in MILES, and it definitely worth all the hype! My friends were in town visiting that night and we were looking to eat out for dinner; none of us had a real particular cuisine set in mind. Mesob was always on my list of restaurants to try in Montclair, so we figured, why not just call them and see if they have any availability. Luckily for us, they said if we came within the next 15 minutes, they would be able to accommodate us. Ethopian food was new to everyone around the table, so we had a lot of questions for the multiple staff members tending to us. Despite the packed restaurant, everyone was really patient with us. When it came time to order, we individually got our own dishes, my friend and I got the same SHRIMP TIBS with different vegetable sides, her boyfriend the MINCHET ABISH KAY WAT, and my boyfriend the LAMB TIBS. Since I had checked in via Yelp App, we got a free appetizer sample! So we got the INGUDAI TIBS (Portabello Mushrooms). Everything was delicious! The portabello mushrooms were AWESOME! Whatever they were marinated in, was nothing that I had before. Although many have mentioned to me in the past that Ethopian food was similar to Indian food, it was still very much different in structure, but similar in use of ingredients. Everything was just tasty. I loved my GOMEN (Collard Greens) vegetable side. The spiciness to my shrimp was just right. Not too strong and not too week either. And for dessert, us gals got the ALMOND CAKE. It was just lovely. It wasn't too sweet, and nothing close to artificial. The berry sauce was just the right amount of sweetness. The top of the cake had a layer of almond slices which I loved in contrast with the cake. My tip for all first timers: the steamed crepe that's served with just about everything will make you full faster than what you expect! If you can grab a few items before actually consume the piece of crepe, it will definitely help!

Delicious, flavorful & great service! I'm lucky I live nearby & I understand why people will drive an hour to eat here. I always trust the waiter to help chose menu items and I'm never disappointed. Come here hungry & BYOB- leftovers are tough to wrap if anything happens to not be devoured. Deserves all the accolades it receives!

Mesob is my #1 Favorite Ethiopian spot. There isn't a bad thing on the menu. The vegetarian options are amazing, but if you're a carnivore, you're in for a treat! (ORDER THE LAMB!) From the delicious food to the accommodating staff to the amazing location- you cannot go wrong with Mesob. My siblings and I have been going there for years and we can't get enough of it. Food- Amazing. If you have a low spice tolerance, be careful. There are some good options but make sure your waiter walks you through the menu. Ambiance- Classy but not stuffy. It's very welcoming. Service- The best!

No utensils? NO PROBLEM. (Don't plan on using forks or knives here!) Mesob was a fantastic dining experience from the moment my wife and I walked in and smelled that delightful aroma of spices, beef, and bread. The ambiance is great: dimly lit and somewhat formal attire. We were seated at a nice table near the center island, and greeted by a smiling waitress who cracked open our Californian red for us immediately (which ended up being a GREAT pairing with Ethiopian, by the way). +Apps: -Yelp check-in got us a free app -The Ethiopian bread was UNREAL. Soft. Moist. Used in place of utensils: you tear a piece off and pinch your food in-between your bread-covered fingers. It's something we'd never done before, but something I absolutely loved. 5/5 -Portobello mushrooms for my wife -Spiced beef inside hard shells: delicious, like tiny tacos almost. Hot and a little spicy. The beef is minced with onions, scallops, and a spicy sauce. +Entree: -Spiced beef in Ethipian sauce with sides of green beans/carrots and spiced potatoes: outta this world. Again, no forks or knives, just your fingers and soft, Ethiopian bread to pinch you meal. It was done beautifully. -The beef was spicy and cooked well -Carrots/greens: nice butter covering, soft with a bit of give; delicious -Spiced potatoes: GREAT. Chunks of savory potato covered in a spicy, reddish broth. Paired beautifully with the bread. +Price: -Affordable for sure. With a Yelp check-in, you get a free appetizer, which is always nice. We didn't do dessert due to the content feeling from our meal, but I couldn't have been more pleased with the service, quality of food, and dining experience at Mesob. An absolute MUST try if you've been contemplating this place.

Yes yes and some more yes! I was very hesitant to try this place. My mother raves about this place and has been begging me to try it with her. I finally decided it was time for me to go. Boy was I happy I tried it. The service was amazing. I very one was beyond friendly and seemed genuinely excited to share their food with you. They are passionate about their restaurant and it shows. We ordered the Ye'siga Sambussa as one of our appetizers. It was so flavorful and delicious. My favorite appetizer was the Timatim Fitfit. It was so refreshing and full of all these different flavors. The flavors blended really well together. I will order this every time I come here! For dinner I had the Minchet Abish Kay Wat. It was delicious. The portions are big and you can choose two sides. I had a lot leftover to bring home and it heated up very well. I cannot wait to come back here and try everything!

GREAT PLACE. I have to admit, the first time I came here...I was nervous. I had never had Ethiopian food but my friends assured me that it was great. Boy were they right. I usually get the vegetarian sampler and it has been yummy every single time. I've even been able to convince some friends to give it a try and have had nothing but great feedback. Service has always been good. Very attentive staff and happy to answer any questions for first time diners. Can't wait to introduce more people to this wonderful restaurant.

The sweetest, happiest, & most patient servers only add to the delightful meal we had at Mesob. Ethiopian food has strong similarities to more familiar Indian food; but the differences are unique and welcome. Injera is the Indian equivalent of dosa, except sweetened due to barley. The "curries" are strongly similar; but I couldn't define the spice used. Either way- wonderful experience, great food & awesome service

Day: Thursday Meal: Lunch Beverage: Ethiopian coffee ($3.50) - Nothing special, and the cup was the size of an espresso cup - Most likely would not order again because it was too pricey for basic coffee Food: Appetizer - Ingudai Tibs (portobello mushrooms) - check-in on Yelp and you can pick a free appetizer - I enjoyed the mushrooms. Mushrooms are not my favorite food, but I was able to eat this because of the great flavor. Very tasty. & it went well with the injera Meat Sampler for 2 ($25.95) - it's supposed to come with 5 different meats and 3 vegetarian sides - However, we were missing a meat dish. :( I didn't bother notifying the waitress because I checked-in via Yelp to get a free appetizer, so I didn't want to ask for too much. [My picture shows 8 items on our plate, but one of the items was our appetizer that we weren't finished with.] Overall, the meal was pretty good. I enjoyed the meat dishes and the split peas (Misia Wat) vegetarian side that we picked. The Gomen (collard greens) were a bit bland and my least favorite. Injera (spongy, sourdough bread) - delicious! I love injera and I love that they refill your basket of injera! The staff was friendly and accommodating. I enjoyed my meal here. However, I think next time I will just order one entree, instead of a sampler. I definitely want to come try their brunch!

I thought I reviewed this place ages ago. This is my go-to Ethiopian place in Jersey. Overall, their service is friendly and very helpful, the food is good, it's just a little pricey. We got 2 meat entrees and 1 vegetable one and then each entree came with 2 vegetable side dishes. Between 3 people, all of the food was gone with some injera to spare. They also came around and refilled the injera twice without us having to ask. Definitely go if you've never tried Ethiopian. The servers are all very welcoming and will explain everything if you have questions. And if you love Ethiopian, well this is the place to go within miles of the area. :)

I found that Ethiopian food has a wide arc of styles, flavors and presentations. Mesob falls somewhere in the middle for me, but that's for me, others my feel it suites their tastes perfectly. The service was not stellar, having to flag down our server several times. In short, meh, I would go again, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.

Above average food, lackluster service left Me sob'ing. See what I did there? Let's start with the service. While it wasn't the worst, it can certainly be better. There were 4 tables and 6 servers. You'd think they'd take less than 15 minutes to figure out who's going to serve our table. It might have taken longer had I not waved over a server. After conferring with his coworkers, he seemed unhappy with having to take our table of 6. While he did everything he was supposed to, I never felt that he was anything less than annoyed with having to serve us. I wasn't too impressed with presentation. You get a huge (roughly 16") crepe-like vessel for eating your selected meats and veggies. *Going off on a tangent, most of the veggies available for selection are legumes or potatoes. There is a collard green selection, and one of the potato selections comes with cabbage (and one cube of potato in my case).* The server mumbles what the food is as he's placing it on the injera. I had no idea what he was saying. He might as well have brought out the food on the injera right from the kitchen. The last part of service was the coffee I heard a bit about. Apparently they roast the beans right before brewing. They bring out a cast iron pan with sizzling coffee beans. It smelled pretty good except for the fact that some of them smelled burned. Luckily, I did not taste that in my coffee. The food itself is pretty tasty. It has depth, and there is a decent variety if you're careful to choose different preparations of food. However, I was hoping to discover new, exotic flavor combinations as I've never had Ethiopian food before, but was ultimately disappointed. It didn't help that the stew-like consistency of all the food started to break down the injera, making it difficult and messy to eat towards the end. And this is coming from someone who is no stranger to eating with his hands. Overall, I wouldn't exactly plan to go here again. The food isn't bad, but it's not worth the price nor the trouble of service. If they have a lunch special, I'd consider take out. PS The server didn't offer to give us back the 3 bottles of beer we had put in the fridge.

My 2nd visit here was better than the first. Sans child this time was a better choice as he wasn't quite ready for an ethnic food experience. The staff was warm, welcoming and helpful throughout service. Also accommodating... I didn't realize I had to call and request GF injera in advance but they got it ready for me anyway. The food was even more delicious than I remembered. The huge selection of healthy food made me very happy. Looking forward to my next visit when I can try even more food from Mesob.

Good food. My favorite Ethiopian food was Makeda in New Brunswick but it was also my first Ethiopian food so my judgement could be skewed. I have been to 2 other places since and I would say this one is next in line on my list. I always get shrimp tibs, hot, which is very spicy but good. Also, the little fried triangles with lentils or beef inside are delicious. Sorry I don't remember the name! My favorite side is the yellow split peas. They are so addicting and flavorful that I always get an entree size to go! Service is also much better than Makeda. Oh and use the injera to pick up your food and eat it and don't be afraid to use your hands. It was weird for me at first but now I love it because it does taste better. I've never been a fan of the taste of metal silverware but I think using your hands just gives the food a more organic, earthy feel and taste. Give it time. ; )

To put it simply; I love Mesob. If you seek fine dining with a plethora of Vegan/vegetarian and any other selections, along with great service and a relaxing atmosphere, then look no more. But be sure to leave your fork and knife at home because they don't use utensils! Fun, right?!! Oh, and bring a bottle since they don't serve alcohol. As a Montclair resident, I've eaten at Mesob many times and always enjoy myself. The food is presented beautifully, the atmosphere embodies the Ethiopian vibe, and the service is wonderful. Everything tastes fresh and each time I go, I learn more about Ethiopian cuisine and how much I love it. I love that you can customize your dishes and share with your friends via a sampler. I always opt for the Vegan dishes and I'm never disappointed. Any of the lentil dishes are fantastic along with the chickpea and potato dish and the chickpea biscuits are delightful! Eating this delicious food with my hands hasn't been this fun since childhood. I feel the sharing and the picking of food with friends really enhances the "dining together" experience. The waiters are also very helpful when you have questions about anything but they're never overbearing. The teas are wonderful and there is a wide selection of them as well as coffee, which they dedicate half of the dessert menu page to telling its history (very cool). I highly recommend the ginger and mint tea blends. They also have Vegan chocolates and cookies!! At Mesob, food is an art. If you haven't experienced it, definitely give it a try. You will be very pleased.Thw weekends can be very busy, so it's best to make a reservation. However, their usually very laid-back and happy to accomodate walk-ins with a minor wait time.

Obsessed with this restaurant! Each time I came here, the food order would disappear in minutes! Friendly staff, and ambient atmosphere. You will have dreams about that sourdough bread.

The food is amazing: fresh, nutritious, and delicious. Well spiced and balanced. They clearly care about their food and it as a representation of their culture. Very child friendly. Wait staff are lovely and helpful.

I will start off by saying that the food was good. We also ordered a $2.75 cup of tea that tasted like Lipton. The service was sub-par, there was one waiter/busboy who seemed to be wandering around in a daze most of the time and we were trying to get his attention because our waiter forgot about bringing us water. They bring you a large plate with the enjara (sorry if I butchered that spelling) followed by little dishes of what you ordered. Then the waiter pours the dishes out in front of you which adds nothing to the experience in my opinion. Let me emphasize: the dishes were VERY little. If they need to raise the price that's fine, but people shouldn't want to order dessert because they're still kind of hungry. We would've ordered dessert (almond cake with berry sauce sounded good), but the wait staff continued ignoring us and we gave up. We then paid and stopped at Dairy Queen on the way home. I was so disappointed, we made a special trip to come here after Makeda in New Brunswick shut down.

I Ä‘ecided to come here with my boyfriend and it was a different experience. It could be just me, but I loved how what seemed to be a formal restaurant, required you to eat with your hands. That's right, no utensils. The decor was stunning, the staff was friendly and attentive. The food was different. The flavors were unique, but it worked. I can't put my hands on any distinct flavors, it's just something that you have to try at least once in your life. I am all about trying new things for the first time and this was one of those good experiences. My only disappointed was the chocolate sample. The images made them look much bigger, however they were 4 teeny tiny chocolates (don't get me wrong, they were extremely good). Since I am a chocolate lover, I was a bit disappointed by the size. Especially since the price was close to 8 dollars. Other than that, I would come back in the future. P. S. My boyfriend and I shared the Meat Sampler for two.

Mesob is a beautiful restaurant in Montclair. It's slightly nicer than casual but they won't kick you out for wearing shorts or anything. Make a reservation if you plan on going thurs-sat and possibly other times just to be safe. Being vegetarian, we always stick to the veg platter where you can pick 6 sides. For 2 people it is $33 for dinner and plenty of food. My favorite dish is the Tikel Gomen which is cabbage, carrots and potatoes. We always get two sides of that since I an selfish and want a whole one to myself :) The Indugai Tibs (mushrooms) is $3.50 more per platter but worth every penny. Just a note- If you go for lunch and get the same platter for 2 its only $19.95 (plus the $3.50 for the tibs if you so choose). I'm sure the portions are less but probably just as filling. The staff is very sweet. We went in on a Friday night at prime eating time and didn't have a reservation. We had my boyfriends daughter with us and she was starving (as were we). They set up a table for us and said as long as we thought we would be done in an hour, we can stay. They went out of their way for us and were super pleasant about it. Now I know to always make a reservation. I wouldn't really recommend bringing kids for the dinner crowd as its kind of upscale and loud.

I stopped by this place to have lunch and was so thrilled with the service and yummy food. It's quiet, open and will get another visit from me. I enjoyed the honey water and green veggies. Can't wait to get back to this place.

Great food, great location, good service, interesting desserts, great coffee, sampler main was great, allowed the server to choose vegetables. The restaurant itself is nice and feels like a busy cafe, very pleasant. Will come again. BYOB

I'm not sure how I managed to live the first 24 years of my life without Ethiopian food, but I'm certainly thankful for that chapter coming to a close when Mesob entered the picture. I should note it's the only Ethiopian place I've been to, so I cannot exactly offer any comparisons, but can say it serves up some amazing eats! Things I love: 1. Their menu is VERY vegan friendly. Moreover, they offer gluten free injera! 2. Food is delicious with a side of delectable. I always get the vegetarian sampler for 2 (very affordable at $20--a lot of food) whether I'm alone or with a friend (I have a huge appetite). This option allows for 6 choices of different dishes, and I find it quite difficult to narrow it down most of the time! My favorites, however, that I order every time without fail, are the ingudai tibs (spicy mushroom dish), gomen (collard greens), azifa (awesome lentil salad), and my top choice, Ye'Shimbra Assa Wat (chick pea patties). Their dessert is great, too--a few of the options, to include the chocolate sampler and cookies, are vegan and gluten free. At one point, they had delicious almond butter cookies, but I think they were phased out. 3. Service is good--nothing mind-blowing, but satisfactory, no doubt. 4. I love the interior--from the smell of spices to the dimmed lighting and authentic Ethiopian decor--all good! 5. They offer take-out. Things I wish for: 1. Alcohol on the menu. It would be cool to have some authentic Ethiopian drink drinks! 2. A greater selection of V/GF desserts. Bottom line: Mesob is a staple for me here in Montclair. Each time I eat there, I leave with a very happy belly!

Mesob is Ethiopian food that's as good as you can expect to get this far north. I've lived in Philadelphia and eaten Ethiopian food in DC - two cities with excellent Ethiopian food on the east coast. Mesob stands up in terms of a lot of the coffee drinks and smaller dishes. Though the quality of some of the curries is a bit lacking, it's not due to flavor. Some of the hot dishes come out colder than they should, but still taste excellent. The injera is fresh as any other and very flavorful. Excellent friendly staff and great coffee round out the menu. The place walks the line between casual and fancy and has a great family atmosphere - you can see Ethiopian family gatherings in the back at quiet times, always a good sign. Lots of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options, good for group gatherings, bring your alcohol own establishment. If you're considering going, call ahead because you might need a reservation to be seated.

The food and staff here are simply amazing. It is hands down the best ethiopian food I have had (and I am including all of the NYC and DC restaurants in my assessment on this). My NYC friends don't believe me when I tell them they have to come to Montclair to get good ethiopian. I would give them 5 stars had it not been for 2 shortcomings: 1. The prices are kind of ridiculous. 2. They don't offer the traditional ethiopian honey wine. Other than that, I cannot say enough good things about this place. Oh, and the owner is a sweet lady that greets everyone with a smile. Very motherly and makes sure all of her customers are well cared for.

I didn't know what to expect when I came here. It was interesting. It was a group of six of us and a baby. They placed us in an awkward place where my friend's head was touching some ledge. No big deal, we moved the table. The food was good. I ordered the Doro Tibs (medium) which was pretty good. I also ordered it with potatoes and lentils. The potatoes were okay but didn't have much flavor. I ended up not touching the lentils. Since it was a large group of us they asked if we wanted it on one large plate. Of course, I said "suuuuuure," but I do not recommend this. First, if there's a food allergy you cross contaminate, which is what we had to get our waiter to understand for our friend with food allergies. Luckily, he was nice about having to scoop up the food he served on the large plate, despite us telling him a few times. Second, your food is placed totally far from you. It makes no sense. I couldn't reach one of my side, so I didn't have it. Fortunately, I have no problem tasting my friends' sides. Third, the starch they place the food on, which is also your utensil, gets really soggy and you can't use it. Fourth, there will be no leftovers with this kind of experience. The only thing I didn't like from all of the food we had (beef: mild and hot; lentils, carrots and peas; collard greens) was the collard greens. It's not fair to say they weren't prepared well, I just don't like them. My friend said they were good, so if you like collard greens, you may like them here. What I was really annoyed with at this establishment was their lack of informing us that there was a "cake cutting" fee for holding our cupcakes. I understand if you're actually providing cake cutting and plates, but we asked for neither, nor were we informed when he took our cupcakes from us. I never understand places with cake cutting fees on cupcakes. you're not doing anything at all. I can understand the fee for actually cutting the cake, but not in this situation. It was fine, it made us spend more time together since we decided to go our friends house to have her birthday cupcakes. I can't say I would go back to this place again, but if you're in the area and wanting to try something new, give this place a shot.

Finally a place I can eat delicious Ethiopian food. Their food was outstanding. My husband and I ordered A LOT of food. First time here, so might as well go big. Their beef was so tender and flavorful. The shrimp was best to me. The flavors and was perfect. It wasn't over bearing or over cooked. Everything was great. The food was paired perfectly and the way they plated the items was great. They even let us know what all the dishes were. Best beef and shrimp!! Completely worth it all. Stuff your face when you're here!!! DO IT
