Taco Town is a real Scottsbluff culinary experience. In fact, it arguably may be THE Scottsbluff culinary experience. I don't want to build it up too much, but if you're in Scottsbluff and looking for a place to grab lunch, this is probably one of your best bets... I'm not from the region (and as of writing this review, I've only been there once), but my fiancee and her family are from the region, and make it a point to stop by when they're in town. I can understand why. Taco Town is a defining quintessential example of Western Nebraska Mexican food. Again, there are many similar restaurants that are of this cuisine in the area with very similar food (but with slight differences), but Taco Town is certainly one of the best. This is the kind of place that the locals will go. As for food recommendations, I recommend the cheese enchiladas, which are delicious. They are made with flour tortillas that seem to be flash fried somehow for a good texture. Above all else, I'd really recommend the tacos--the tacos are very good, and go very well with the hot sauce that is provided at Taco Town. Being from Texas, the tacos reminded me a little of a puffy taco in San Antonio, with the fried shell. (It's more crispy than a puffy taco, though). If you like Taco Town, Taco De Oro (which is practically across the street) is also very similar. I'd check out both establishments and decide what you like better. As for this yelp reviewer, I'd give Taco Town a slight edge over Taco De Oro.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. We were in town very briefly after a stop at the nearby Scotts Bluff National Monument. Looked this place up on Yelp and the reviews were so good that we just had to stop. The deep fried tacos were sooooo good. Obviously, they'll hasten a cardiac event of some sort. But couldn't resist eating the whole plate. Service was just so-so. The guys didn't seem all that excited to be working there. But the food came out quick and really hit the spot after a long day of driving.

We stopped into this place based on the glowing Yelp reviews and were very disappointed. It isn't much of a "Taco Town," as they only serve one variety of taco -- ground beef smothered in lettuce and cheese. I make better Mexican food at home.

I give Taco Town 5 stars for food. Seriously. It's that good. Home-style Mexican food in a family-like ambiance. It's not "fine-dining" but it's certainly better. Have the tacos - deep fried flour tortillas with a succulent beef filling, and the tamales, as good as they get. The hot sauce is off-the-hook delicious. You won't find better Mexican food in Nebraska. My family grew up here, and this is as real as it gets.

It's not everyday when your hometown (pop 14,000) restaurant is featured in Gourmet Magazine, but this Western Nebraska favorite has those honors. The food at Taco Town is my benchmark for what Mexican food should be. I grew up eating at this restaurant sometimes 5 times a week. Well it was one of the better lunch deals in town for those of us that left the high school campus for lunch on a regular basis. After living away from Scottsbluff for almost 20 years now, I still find myself craving their food and making it one of my first stops when I pull into town. It wasn't uncommon for parents to overnight Taco Town food to their kids away at college--it's that good! Beware of the summer vacation that they take each August (TT closes for week!). I was in Scottsbluff last week and didn't realize Taco Town was closed at the same time. Had I known, I would have moved my vacation...it's that good!

Had to try this place while I was out due to other reviews. It must be a local thing, It was ok.. but nothing out of this world..

I'm with the previous reviewer, Polly K. Almost everyone I know from Scottsbluff makes a point to stop here whenever they're back in town. I'm from Kimball, 40 miles away, and even I try to get some TT when I'm back in the area. I'm sitting here drooling right now, just thinking about it.

Loved the tacos. The pork chili sauce was killer! Can't believe a tiny packet with less then 20cents they charge 54 cents.

This place has been drastically improved! The food quality is better and the atmosphere is way better! Looks a lot cleaner. They even put in a bar, I haven't been able to try the happy hour specials but I hear they're good! It is a little pricey for Tex-Mex but worth it.

I would not come here again! Food is not that good not sure why all of the people reviewing this place say it was good. Dry and no taste.

So my Nebraskan husband has been hyping this place up, as he and his family have been coming here throughout his childhood whenever visiting Western Nebraska. I didn't have high expectations but was ready to try it. Being from a bigger city, going to a place called 'Taco Town' just sounded way too kitschy for me. Not exactly a Chevys, there was definitely a 'hole in the wall' kind of feel as you entered and looked around. There was ample seating, booths and tall bar stool type of seating. You order your food at the front and wait for your number to be called. I let my husband order for me, seeing as he would know best. I ended up with a Combo Plate: beef taco, beef flauta, cheese quesadilla, beans, and pork chili sauce over rice. The taco was quite good: their shells are deep fried to a light, airy, fluffy, and crispy goodness. The meat was just mildly seasoned, so you do need to rely on additional hot sauce or the chili sauce to make it great. The beef flauta was good too, but fairly simple: it seemed like just a crunchy taco shell. The cheese quesadilla was delicious, definitely a cheesy guilty pleasure. Beans were good, rice I could have lived without (seemed overcooked and mushy). That pork chili sauce though, I probably could have enjoyed that by itself! Good pork and a light (more watery of a consistency) sauce base. I can see how this became a family mainstay, and I could definitely enjoy it again as a guilty pleasure treat!

I'd been hearing from various family members that this place had been in decline over the past few years. Rumor was, it had changed ownership a few times and may have lost the plot. My father, who used to eat here several times a week, had refused to return. Fortunately, an uncle swore the most recent owner was back to the original recipes and hope had been restored. I had to find out for myself. We ended up heading over near closing time on a Saturday night, which could have ended badly for any number of reasons. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the food was pretty much as yummy as I remembered it. A bit on the greasy side and definitely not low-sodium but we fed a dozen people for around $80 and had leftovers to take home. Even more interesting, the interior has had a complete make-over and they now serve alcohol. Gone is the high-school cafeteria vibe, although I can't quite characterize the new decor. I'll miss the Ms. Pac-Man machine but all in all, we were quite happy with our meals.

My husband and I went here becuase of the high reviews that they had. Once we ordered I glanced in the back and realized that everything was microwaved or in a crockpot. Nothing seemed to be fresh. This place is NOT close to Mexican food and it is disgusting. If you want a great mexican place, try the one in Torrington

Love this place. A must eat everytime we come to town and almost always take a dozen enchiladas and pork chili with us back to denver

If you are looking for a greasy, fried, disgusting pea filled plate of human feces - this is the place for you! Scottsbluff has much, much better Mexican food than this I hear it's under new management so I hope things have gotten better

Ask any Gering or Scottsbluff native what their favorite Mexican restaurant is. There are more than 20 to choose from. The vast majority will tell you, "Taco Town." The J&R band was in town for two shows (we have another show in three weeks as part of the Oregon Trail Days event) and three of the six band members are locals. We simply HAD to go try Taco Town. We all had the combo plate, which includes the famous deep-fried taco, cheese enchilada, tostada, and rice with pork chili. The taco is fantastic - great crunch, fabulous ground beef (tangy & delish). The rest of the plate was good but the taco was the big winner. Staff is great, friendly. Note that you order at the counter, go pick a table, and pick up your food at the counter when it's called up. BTW, check out the Jones & Raine band at jonesandraine.com

Order the combo! Gave only 3 stars because I am not a big fried food fan but must admit it was damn good and great service.

This is our family favorite for fast Mexican food. There is new ownership, but everything has stayed the same. Actually, I think the enchiladas might even have more cheese in them than before!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
