This review is for the actual building on s 24th street, although I've had food from the taco truck and it's pretty much the same. I've been pushing off coming here for awhile, I'm really loyal to the place across the street. However, we decided to do our own taco tour and this was the first stop. I'm very let down. We ordered 4 tacos; 1 al pastor, 1 carnitas, 1 lengua (beef tongue), and 1 chorizo. None of them tasted good. The place was PACKED when we got there around noon today and a lot of the people weren't eating all their food according to my husband. Well if theirs tasted like mine I understand why. The WORST taco is a tie between the lengua and the carnitas. The lengua was so over cooked and cut into little cubes it tasted like I was chewing on rubber bands. I could not chew them up well enough and it was just gross. The carnitas were just bland and way too greasy. Yes I understand that carnitas are typically fried in their own fat, but these were gross. The chorizo was WAY over cooked even by my standards (and I like it crispy), It was burnt and greasy which pooled in the basket on the side. Finally the al pastor, which to say it was the best isn't that much of a compliment, was still rubbery and if I could compliment it at all I liked the onions. It was served with roasted peppers, radishes, limes, a red salsa, and salsa verde. None of which really helped it. Oh and we got chips when we sat down with some bean dip. It didn't have much flavor so we tried to add hot sauce and it didn't help. The chips were rather burnt on some part and they all tasted kinda... weird. If I had to guess they need to change the oil in their fryer. The best part was probably watching 3 of the staff members in the kitchen almost come to blows because they were arguing over something. The rest of the staff were okay, I wouldn't really say friendly either. So no I probably wouldn't come back here. Go across the street to Taqueria Tijuana and get good food. Heck Taco Bell would be better than this crap. -_-

So most of the good Mexican food places are in south Omaha; this is one of them. Stopped in the other day and had some Cheek Tacos that were delicious. The place is small and has a drive thru.

Totally love this place...I'm a fiend for carnitas street tacos, and El Rey have some of the best, only one better is Maria Bonita...Both times I've come here the ladies working were fast and friendly, always smiling...Excellent menu, had the huevos mexicana this last visit, and it was very good...Prices are very reasonable and they take credit/debit which is a must in my book...El Rey is a place I would actually take the bus to go to, it's that damn good...

This is actually a review about their food truck next to Avanza - I had no idea this was a stand-alone establishment. Their menu selection is fairly limited, but it's definitely authentic. You can instantly tell it's authentic Mexican because "beef tongue" is on the menu. Their burrito costs $4.50, which seemed reasonable. I was expecting something similar to a Chipotle burrito, but I was surprised with what I received. The burrito must have weighed an entire kilo (2.2 lbs) and consisted entirely of steak, rice, lettuce, and tortilla. Nothing spectacular, but worth the money and wait. My only complaint is the sanitation. The employees wear gloves, but the same employees who make the food also handle cash, which defeats the whole point of wearing gloves. If not for the cross-contamination, this would probably get four stars.

I've never been to the actual restaurant, only the burrito truck. Decent CHEAP food! I love the carnitas. However I have found that if you go in the evening the pork is very fatty and the burritos are less stuffed as the day progresses. Good, cheap "fast" food in my neighborhood, and I visit more frequently than I should!!

Not very vegetarian friendly. It doesn't seem like a big deal to throw some beans and cheese in or tortilla, but they acted like I was the first person to ever order a meatless burrito. I had to pull out of the drive thru and wait in the parking lot while they prepared my "specialty burrito".

One of my favorite places to get Mexican in the city. I have not been to the restaurant, but frequent the taco truck that is regularly parked in the Avanza Grocery Store lot at 29th & Leavenworth. While the choice of items is limited, with tacos, burritos, tortas, and quesadillas, the variety of meat options is not. I have tried them all including the beef tongue and beef cheek. Do not be afraid, they are delicioso!! My favorites...the chorizo in the torta, and the pastor (seasoned pork) in the taco. This is some of the best you can get with a reasonable price to boot - ranging from $1.50 to $4.50.

I found myself in South O with limited cash (which I was saving for my post meal trip to Jacobo's), so opted to give lunch a go here rather than my normal fav joint. My dining companion was new to the beauty of authentic Mexican food, so got a bit crazy with the following: 1 guacamole, 1 cheek taco, 1 carne azada taco, 1 pollo gordita, 1 burrito with carne azada and chorizo, 1 flan and 1 churro (don't judge). Our waitress had that "totally over it" look on her face, but we were not going to be deterred as we tore into our comp basket of chips with a side of beans and salsa. Both tacos were flavorful, the guacamole was chunky and fresh, and the burrito was tasty and large enough to serve both without all of the other accompaniments we ordered. The chicken was packed with flavor, but the gordita itself was not my most favorite. I do appreciate the side of crema and shredded lettuce that came with it to help freshen the intense seasoning on the meat. The flan was a miss, as were the churros. I'm glad I gave it a go, but probs isn't on my frequent visitor list with so many options available (although I am curious to try their chilaquiles). I'll continue to pop by their truck on occasion, due to convenience of grabbing a meal on my way home from downtown. Our could-be $5 lunch turned into a $30 smorgasboard that resulted in a couple of food babies and plenty of leftovers for dinner. I appreciate the drive-thru, which apparently others do as well, judging by the steady stream of cars at the window.

Well, we make it in here at least once every 1-2 weeks and I cant find fault with the menu yet. Still a huge fan of the tacos, service and the cost (cheap!) We are obsessed with the fresh squeezed orange juice machine.

For three years, every time I am in Omaha, this is the only place I will eat dinner. The food is amazing. The tacos are the best. Have tried tacos all over the USA and Mexico and they don't compare. Their soups are phenomenal. The place is filled with locals and can get very busy, very quickly. Their drive thru is nonstop busy. It is too bad that that I have to drive 1,500 mile from Washington DC to get a good taco. Fresh, friendly, and always on top of their game. This place is a winner!

I have only had their tacos. They are so fresh and yummy, I don't dare try anything else! The beef is not over fatty like some places; onions, cilantro and tortillas are fresh and tasty. I almost forgot to mention the super fresh and scrumptious sauces!! I drench my tacos with them! This place is my point of reference for tacos, and so far no other tacos measures up to theirs.

We enjoyed lunch at this restaurant during the week. Free chips and warm bean dip come out at the beginning of the meal. You have two salsas for dipping (green and red) . Both are spicy. Red is spicy with a little sweetness to it. All very acceptable. We tried the cheese quesadilla with rice and beans as well as the asada (grilled steak), chorizo (spicy pork sausage), and al pastor marinated pork) tacos. All meals were good. Service was decent, but it does take a little time to prepare the meal. Definitely a place to add to our list when we desire Mexican food. Overall price for the meal with drinks was around $17.00.

If I'm making the trip to south 24th Street, there are a couple other places I'd choose to stop before ending up at El Rey, but having the food truck parked in the Avanza, now Supermercado, parking lot (2900 Leavenworth St, Omaha, NE 68105) tips the scales in El Rey's favor. As such, I've never eaten at the restaurant itself, so this review is dedicated to that delicious mobile food wagon. We've eaten from the truck several times now and it's been good each time. Happy to report that tacos and tortas are very tasty and well worth the price. There's something about the bread on that torta... Next up, burritos!

Mind you, this is coming from a gringo, but this place is legit! Great food at great prices. It's become something of a Sunday tradition to eat too many tacos, here.

Chicken nachos are out of this world good. Huge slices of avocado, yummy cheese, and the waitress spoke English and accepted credit cards. I'm a fan!

You know you're in a real Mexican restaurant when there is a guy selling bootleg DVDs out of a cardboard box to the customers inside! Well except for us of course. Anyways, this place is awesome. I have been here many times since first trying it. I have never tried their trucks, but I bet they are the same. We've ordered the lengua, al pastor, tripa, and cabeza here. Everything was cooked excellent and their sauces were good. I've gone through the drive-thru as well and never been disappointed. Surprisingly, this is the only place we'e ever been stared at or given strange looks. No matter, we will still continue to come here, although maybe not late at night.

My husband and I have instituted Monday night burrito night in our household, and 9 times out of 10, we come to Taqueria El Rey. We don't eat a lot of fast food in our house, but we love this weekly indulgence and supporting a local chain. We're not big meat eaters, so we typically order burritos with just bean, rice, and cheese. When we actually get what we ask for, this combination, coupled with their fresh flour tortillas, is spot-on. However, I gave 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 not for taste, but for consistency. First of all, there have been several times where we've gotten home to discover that our burritos have meat and/or extra vegetables in them. Not the end of the world, but because we love the BRC version so much, it's always a disappointment. The other issue is price. It seems like every time we go, we pay a different price for 2 burritos - anywhere between $7-11. Again, not the end of the world, but would be nice to count on a consistent price. We have visited a couple of their satellite truck locations, where price and quality has (surprisingly) tended to be a little bit more consistent. However, it seems like the trucks have variable schedules, which is fine, but would be awesome if there were a way to find what those are.

Mexican food is what I know best! When I moved from the West Coast to the Mid West I did not think I would find a restaurant that would satisfy my taste buds. I was wrong! El Rey, hands down has some of the best burritos around!

Always gets my orders wrong! It's America, and they answer the phone in Spanish. Then when you try and tell your order, the gal always says "uh mi no speak English" what kind of business is this??

Meh average Mexican fare. Gave an extra star cause of service. Tacos for $2 didn't impress. Not even close to Taqueria Tijuana right next door on the corner of 24th. Your better of there.

Delicious. Meat is juicy which is key to making this yummy. Not super greasy as others have been. Cilantro, onions and their salsa-- verde and red salsa is quite yummy.

I wish I could half stars because I really feel like its 3 1/2, but since I finally ate across the street at the "other place" I have to take El Rey down a notch. El Rey is still solid and I will always be enamored by the spicy green salsa, but the selection is not as interesting as it is across the way, nor is it quite as sabroso.

Being from southern California I was spoiled with Mexican food places (drive five minutes and you will hit one) so when I moved out here I looked for the closest one I could find. I ordered the milanesa torta and was not dissapointed. It immediately reminded me of all the taco shops back home. I've had the enchiladas, sopes, and tacos and all of it was great. I've taken many friends from work and all were pleased at the end of their meal. If you're looking for agreat Mexican restaurant look no further!

To the point: very disappointing experience. Wait staff didn't help out with food selection at all even though it was my first visit; later the waitress was too busy on the phone to expedite check payment. Food didn't look anything like their tv adds and tasted even more subpar. I don't recommend their "steak" sandwich and chicken burrito. Meet didn't taste fresh and the whole mixture was sticky and not appetizing. Microwaved?! Possibly I will return to try something else in hope I caught them on a bad day. You should go across the street for your Mexican fill!

After a crazy haunted hay rack ride, we stopped at their taco truck which was parked right off the interstate and leavenworth. I had the chorizo torta (basically a chorizo sausage sandwich). It was delicious! Needless to say adding a crisp bun and mayo to sausage is just great. The best part is that it cost $4.50 and is a huge sandwich. They also had two hot sauces that you could try. I have a high tolerance for spicy, so I didn't think either was too hot, but the green one was very refreshing with the abundance of cilantro. It lightened up the richness of the sandwich. Will definitely try again, I will have to do the tongue or beef cheeks!

I have been bike commuting by there for years and would debate nearly on a daily basis if I should stop and pick up a burrito. I finally did and I crave them all the time. I have tried most of the meat options which were good, but I think the carnitas is best. My wife even loves this place, and she is kind of picky. She always asks for a bite, but usually finishes off half.

Great food. I've eaten from both of the trucks as well as the sit down restaurant. Food is amazing. If you go here I recommend any thing Al Pastor. It is a seasoned pork that is unlike anything I've ever had. The best part is that its dirt cheap and delicious. If you go get the pastor and smother it with the green salsa

Between this and Taqueria Tijuana, I would say Tijuana hands down. I only go to this place because it has a drive through and I'm a lazy bastard. The tacos have 2 pieces of wrap rather than 1 like Tijuana and these tacos are not bad at all. Tijuana simply has the BOMB tacos you can't replicate and I also like the salsa sauces at Tijuana better than El Rey. Since these two establishments are right across the street from each other, choose Tijuana!

We have been here twice and had a breakfast meal, steak tacos, chicken sandwich and enchiladas. The first visit my egg breakfast meal was clean tasting and not over seasoned and my wife's chicken enchilada was filled with not dry chicken and finished with traditional toppings. The second visit I had a chicken sandwich which was very filling but not as good as I have had at other restaurants. My wife has steak tacos which was topped with lots of cilantro and onions. Food was not as good on the second trip, but still worth keeping on our eating out list. My wife's biggest complaint was that there was not enough cheese on any of the items. Her complaint not mine, I order things without cheese.

Review #100 - what better place to do than El Rey? This place is pretty standard on the South 24th Street corridor of authentic Mexican food joints. Right on the Southeast corner of 24th and Q, they have a drive-thru, so they get most of our business. We've had: Carne Azada tacos, Carnitas tacos, carnitas burritos, carne azada burritos, carne azada nachos, carne azada torta, adoboado burrito, tamales, rice & beans, and mexican cokes from here. Probably other things too, but I can't remember every time I've ever been. The burritos are awesome. They are loaded with meat, rice and beans, and absolutely huge. The torta is also divine, it's a mexican sandwich, with guac and sour cream on the bread that is also loaded with meat. The nachos are top-notch as well, loaded with the crumbled and melted queso blanco along with beans, tons of meat, homemade chips and loads of veggies/peppers. The tacos take the cake here though. Carnitas tacos are like a little slice of heaven every time I have them. Same with the steak, but I just prefer Carnitas in general. 2 corn tortillas, meat, white onion and cilantro. Pour a little of their dark green salsa on here and WOW. You should be able to get out of here for about $10-12 for 2 - it's worth every penny. If the person in the drive through greets you in espanol, just tell them you need a second and somoene who speaks english will come to the microphone. Try it out if you want some awesome tacos!

My opinion: a watered down version of their neighbor. I am a die hard fan of Taqueria Tijuana which is across the street from El Ray. I always see lots of people eating here though, so when I planned to have lunch with some out of town guests at Taqueria Tijuana and they were closed for repairs, we decided to try El Ray. El Ray is a little sleeker than Tijuana, if you can say that about a taco joint. They have full color menus with pictures of the food and the decor is newer, plus it has a drive up window as the building obviously used to house a national fast food restaurant. The place must have been coming off of a huge lunch rush when we arrived because most of the tables we covered in dirty dishes. No biggie, we were hungry and this is not a high end establishment. Unfortunately there appeared to be only one waitress working so it took over 5 minutes before we were acknowledged. When we did get her attention, we ordered our drinks and per my faves at Tijuana, I got the cachete (cheek) and lengua (tongue). The waitress brought out some complementary chips with three small dishes of sauce for dipping, A salsa, a green sauce that was reminiscent of Azteca's spicy slaw only this was pureed. and the third was a bean dip that also reminded me of Azteca but tasted literally like they had watered it down to stretch it. We had to ask for our drinks and I ordered the horchata which at Tijuana is rich, sweet, and full of cinnamon. After one sip this tasted like a diet version of the drink, or it too was watered down. Finally on to the tacos. What can I say? They also paled in comparison to their neighbor. The cachete was okay but the lengua was chopped bits and chewy, not the tender slow cooked roast beef I am used to. Kind of like what you are afraid tongue might be like if you are new to it. All in all I guess it was not a "bad" meal but they need to step up their game if they want to get my business again.

If 4.5 stars was possible I would have given that to El Rey. Being from Southern California and having lived in Mexico for 6 months I find myself an expert on cheap Mexican food. The flavor of El Rey is SUPER authentic! Solid flavor, cheap prices and real Mexican food. With that said, its not for everyone. Its down and dirty (it is a taqueria) so some people won't appreciate the decor or feel of the place and it looks beat up from the outside however it is damn good. Why only 4.5 stars and not 5? The al pastor was more like adobada which to me basically means it had almost a sauce to it. Al pastor off the spit is moist meet and super marinated but has no sauce feel. Normally, I doubt I'd knock a half star off but Omaha has some damn good al pastor so I hold them to a higher standard. Lastly, I thought the lengua was dry. I doubt this half star will deter anyone and it shouldn't, El Rey is way worth it. We had a al pastor torta (delicioso), a carnitas burrito (amazing) and a lengua taco (good size and lots of meat but dry).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
