The dismal reviews on this place really disappoint me! I recently started frequenting San Luis again after a less than stellar experience in 2004, and I can't get enough. The menu is HUGE. You can find all of your traditional Mexican favorites, and then some surprising dishes such as pasta and salads. The atmoshphere is meh and always has been, but when visiting an "authentic" Mexican restaurant, I'm usually not there to enjoy the decor. You do get chips (usually warm and delicious!) and salsa upon sitting down (even if waiting for a to-go order), and the waitresses are all friendly even if busy. Portions are HUGE. There are many drink choices from the adjoined bar. If you've tried it in the past and weren't very impressed, give it another try!

I've gotta update this old thing. It's been a pretty good while since I've been here, mostly because I've been trying out all the other places in town. Dropped in again about three weeks ago, and things weren't good. All the same food, all the same recipes, but man, if I'm going to eat leftovers, I'd like to take 'em home and leave 'em in the fridge for a couple of days myself. Almost everything was old. The guac was fairly fresh, but flavorless. What in the world happened here? I'll probably try it again in the next couple of months to see if there's any improvement, but if this had been my first visit, it would also be my last. Real shame.

Still at a two here. The atmosphere is pretty great, and the service was marginally better (we had a large group this time so were seated prominently in the middle of the restaurant) but the food was still pretty Meh. I'm not really interested in returning a third time.

Apparently you can get Montezuma's revenge and you only have to travel to south 24th street. I ate here last Sunday and got food poisoning. Projectile vomiting and diarrhea, I passed out twice from throwing up. Besides the food poisoning the meal I ordered didn't even taste good, I got the Chile Rellenos; they were watery and soggy. I ended up only eating two bites of that and ate the beans and rice instead which I guess ended up being the food poisoning culprit. Im getting sick just thinking about it. I do not recommend this place at all. Dont be fooled by a some reviews saying that the ambiance is authentic just because its gross and dirty. I dont need to feel like Im in the worst part of Tijuana to feel like im getting good mexican food.

I think we will go back but I am not sure. We had dinner here on Saturday night. I was craving Mexican and CB's review made this place sound great. I like a Mexican place where I am the only white person. Then I know it is really authentic. I ordered the Poblano Mole, which turned out to be chicken in a very incredible Mole sauce. The meat was tender and swimming in the sauce. There were sides of rice and beans. We also had a side of guac, which was cheap (only $2) and seems very fresh. They give you a basket of chips with some good tasting salsa, but the salsa was a bit scary looking, it was brownish. Maybe they have to use canned tomatoes due to the tomato problem. They do have a kids menu, from which my children selected Chicken nuggets, The fries were a hit, the nuggets, according to my husband were mostly filler (and probably parts--ick!).

Was surprised, had what seemed a good review, but terrible food. The Carnita gordita was dry and the meat tasted old. Beef tongue tacos were rubbery and tough. Plenty more great spots on 24th street dont know if that's one of them.

Although I'm not an expert, or a transplant of any kind, I feel like I can tell the difference between authentic and not so authentic Mexican food. For my money, Restaurant San Luis is the best in Omaha. There are many other places I've yet to try, but as of this moment, it's the best I've had. I had a Pina Jarritos to drink, they have all kinds of Mexican sodas or juices to choose from. As well as a full bar serving Pina Coladas or Margaritas plus your standard Corona or Dos Equis among other Mexican beers. We started with nachos, which were very good. The steak was brilliant, along with the homemade chips, and just a sprinkling of cheese. They had a nice selection of appetizers besides nachos, and the complimentary chips and salsa were excellent. They had loads of dinner choices, I had the green chile, and my wife had the steak tacos. Both were out of this world. The green chile sauce was the best I've ever had, and the pork was just right. The steak on the tacos was just like on the nachos, so again, brilliant. Homemade corn tortillas and beans and rice also came along with the green chile pork. The restaurant is decent inside, not fancy but not dirty or dingy at all. Just nice. Overall, I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for what I'd consider an authentic Mexican dining experience.
