I had the Thursday special, lamb stew, and my wife had a chicken salad. The lamb came out and smelled absolutely amazing! I would never have tried cooking any meat with cinnamon, but they rocked it! My wife's salad had a giant grilled and seasoned chicken breast on it, and yet again, it was amazing! I will be adding the Greek Islands to my restaurant rotation!!! The real reason this place gets the 5th star is because of the fantastic staff.

Like many of my reviews, I was on a business trip. I grabbed a tourist brochure from the airport and scanned the dining recommendations. This place caught my eye, and I had a taste for authentic Greek food. So I took a little drive from the airport to check it out. Yelp reviews were kinda average.. Some good, some bad... That is about what I expected, and that is about what I got. It's definitely not a fine dining restaurant or a real special atmosphere... More like a very slightly upscale diner. Not very pretty outside, and not much better inside. Everything was painted bright blue and white Greek flag colors. I asked the server for some olive oil and bread and she said they didn't have olive oil but she could bring me some Greek dressing with olive oil in it. Kind of unconventional for an authentic Greek restaurant. The Greek dressing was actually pretty good though. The salad was bagged iceberg mix...not great. Plus I had to pay extra for kalamata olives and crumbled feta.. So I guess the normal salad is just iceberg lettuce and dressing. I ordered spanakopita as an appetizer, and it was not bad either. I honestly could not tell if it was frozen or if it was made in house, but it was actually pretty good...had a very slight hint of mint flavor that I haven't had in spanakopita before. The server was friendly, but not at all Greek..pronounced the menu items about the way an 8 year old would. I ordered the Pikilia (assortment) entree. This is kind of like a sampling of a couple menu items. Comes with 1/4 of a Greek chicken, pork souvlaki, your choice of either moussaka or pastitsio, dolmades, and quartered potato. Food was all very hot very fresh, but the flavors were somewhat average. Then I realized there were no dolmades on my plate. I asked the server if it was supposed to come with dolmades..."Hold on. I will see what 'Guest' says....*walks to the kitchen* GUEST! HE SAID HE WANTS THE DOLMADES." * walks back out with one on a plate* "Sorry that's a misprint on the menu, but you asked for it so we have to give it to you." Oh, ok. Haha All in all, food was about average. Maybe I am just spoiled going to Greektown in Chicago my whole life? Every little family owned Greek roadside diner where I live has food that is about the same as this, so I can't see it being anything very special. Definitely seems like prices were a little higher than they probably should have been. If I lived close by... I may come occasionally, but being from out of town I probably would not return on my next business trip. I will try somewhere else.

When the plate came it smelled like a farm.... I thought. Maybe it's the seasoning... This meat was ROTTEN they cooked and served it anyways. Even the color was off..... first experience and definitely the last. Beware. Check your food before you eat it. My friend ate the chicken that came with the moussaka dish and kebab and now she has the runs.....

I had Greek Islands for the first time with a group of work friends. I've really only had Gyros and Greek Salads in the past. I was impressed with the many options they had on their menu and decided to venture out and try something new with the Vegetarian Pastichio. YUM!!!! We all got something different and everyone loved what they had. We also ordered the flaming cheese appetizer, and it was REALLY good, after they light it on fire they yell OPA! I loved this place, My only reason for giving it 4 stars was the service was pretty slow over lunch hour, they also forgot the drink order. But overall the food, menu and atmosphere were impressive. I plan on bringing my husband soon to try it. OPA!

Another great experience at Greek Islands.... Molly our server was by far the most talented server I've ran into in awhile... very professional and fun. Thanks for not giving me anything to complain about and making my family's dinner so enjoyable

Well that was disappointing! Geeez me and my boyfriend were in the mood for Greek tonight and he suggested we try the Greek Islands. Well he got the gyro platter and I had the chicken kabob. First off the meat was dry and everything was oily as hell! Seriously If I wanted to eat oil I have some in my pantry! My broccoli looked old and it was cold! What the hell people are you even trying? If you cant cook stay out of the kitchen! Word of advice don't even bother or waste your time and money here! Also, every little thing you add on costs you extra!

The food here is very very good. Each of us had a gyro and the kids had the peanut butter and jelly (made with pita bread). The Greek potatoes are delicious and the salad with feta and olives is also very tasty. I took my parents, who are very picky about their gyro meat, and they absolutely loved the gyros--this is our family's favorite place for gyros. The food is quite reasonably priced. The atmosphere is casual and very comfortable. The decor is very nice and inviting with a large Greek island mural painted on the wall. The owner seems to be a very kind man from Crete and he has brought his culinary history to Omaha, which I am grateful for.

So here's the deal: This is a classic Greek restaurant similar to many of the Greek places I have eaten at in Chicago. They have all of the classics like lamb shanks, saganaki, galaktoboureko, dolmas, etc. and they do them up to par. However, you can tell that they make all of these in advance and they are warmed to order. This leads to some inconsistent temps and food quality. Saganaki was delicious-how could flaming cheese be bad? I ordered the Pikilia platter with moussaka. The chicken that came with it was cooked to hell and you couldn't even eat the leg because it was SO dry. The potatoes were scrumptious and swimming in olive oil. The dolma was good but rather dry and not as hot as I'd like. Pork souvlaki? Relatively dry as well but good flavor. The moussaka was the star of the show. Lots of the time it is a dry tasteless bottom with a creamy top. Not the case here. The eggplant and tomato flavors come through and are complemented beautifully by a creamy, golden brown topping. I also tried my brother's lamb shank which is what I should have ordered to begin with. It was a massive portion and had just the right balance of lean and fatty meat and was not at all gamey. Portions are big enough to have a full meal the next day. All in all, a solid choice and fairly priced. Just don't go expecting gourmet and you're good to go.

Food was seriously over cooked and when I said something their comment was, "the food is fine." That will be my first and last time at that restaurant!

If I want Greek food at a NICE sit down location this is where I come. It's so delicious, I always get a gyro platter. They have the best rice ever. (I get rice, no vegetables.) Also their flaming cheese(can't remember the name) tastes AMAZING with the bread they bring for you and any of the staff members who bring it to you really have fun saying OPA! and trying to get you involved in the fun and delicious Greek experience!

I love Greek food. While working close to the Greek Isles I stopped today for takeout. I ordered the shrimp. They are 6 lovely breaded and fried to perfection. They came with rice, a salad which I added the feta cheese and olives to, and bread and butter. After leaving the restaurant and parking for lunch, my search for a napkin or silverware came up zero. The shrimp was excellent, the salad looks good and so does the rice. Guess I have supper as well.

I have been here twice and had the same experience. The service is the slowest I've ever seen. The food seems to be dredged through an oily yellow sludge before it gets to your table. I assume it is olive oil. Everything seems to come with these hideously large potato quarters that have gotten not only the oil treatment, but also taste weirdly like Joy or lemon pledge. The salads are swimming in dressing and if you are lucky your meat won't be burned crispy. The plating is hilariously ugly and unappetizing (the pork loin is gray) and all the desserts look identical. They have a passable tzatziki sauce, I guess.

The creten winter is relatively mild & even though November is notoriously a month with the most rainfall the isle was fairly arid. I ordered the greek salad & quickly slid on my rubber gloves as not to get gypsie's dust onto my hands. Even with my slight of hand the gypsy was able to astral project some sort of retrocognition to a romani tribe possibly in western europe or even india. I maintain a 5/5 rating and was quite impressed with the staff's skills in allusion casting, and the ability to conjure & invoke curses.

My all time favorite spot in Omaha. The dressing is amazing. Spanokotita cannot be beat. Always wonderful. A must.

  • Karen T.

This place used to be the best in Omaha..five stars.. until today. In fairness I have not been here in years. But OMG how things change. The kalamari was hard and unedible, the spanakopita was ice cold. Never made it to the main course. The owner came over and got nasty cause we cancelled our main course. I felt like I was on an episode of KITCHEN NIGHTMARES!

We've been dining here since 1997. The best Greek food in town. The only thing I can complain about is parking. Thinking of the souvlaki makes my mouth water. The gyros are great, only spring for the platter if you're REALLY hungry. Get some baklava to take home. Great staff and service I have never had a bad experience here. Great memories though!

    (5)
  • Jennifer S.

Get the veggie pita served warm. I know it doesn't sound good at all, but it is frickin awesome! I don't know how they do it, but it's awesome. You should also have the baklava ice cream for dessert...amazing!! I've had the vegetarian pastichio, and it was good but a little blander than I expected. If I indulge in a giant plate of cheesy, creamy, hearty pasta casserole, I expect to have my mind-blown, and that didn't happen. :( The chicken souvlaki pita is also pretty good. The avgolemono soup tasted off, but I've never had it anywhere else so that could just be my taste. Honestly, nothing else I've ever had there is as good as the veggie pita. One of these days I'm going to try their ouzorita, which apparently is a Greek margarita. Pros: Veggie pita. Baklava ice cream. Out-of-this-world tzatziki sauce (and lots of it). Free bread & butter. Lots of vegetarian entrees. Greek coffee. Large servings. Bar. Cons: Hummus is meh. Bland pastichio. Weird soup.

Have eaten here for years. Athenien salad is wonderful with gyro meat. Gyro sandwich is great. Baklava is to die for. Service is friendly and prices are very reasonable. I'll definitely come back.

One of my favorite places to eat. Family run restaurant. It's clean and the family and servers are always friendly and provide good service. I live din Omaha for years then moved to Bellevue so I ended up going to other fast food Greek restaurants. While I like the fast food Greek restaurants once I went back I realized how much I enjoyed their food. The food is fresher and their meals are more complete. The quality is just better and the inside of their restaurant is just more authentic than most. I enjoy their Athenian salad but also enjoy their Gyro platter. I never leave the Greek Islands disappointed. Friday/Saturday nights you can usually expect to wait for a table which is always a good sign of quality. Personally I enjoy their food and always look forward to going back!

The ever-present owners always make you feel like the long lost cousin finally coming to dinner. I command you to order 2 saganaki (which is Greek for Flaming Brick of Heaven. Ok, I don't speak Greek, but I'm pretty sure that's an accurate translation) as you and your dinner guests will have a huge falling out over who ate more. It's amazing! In my 12 or so years of patronage, I've had the Moussaka, Spanakopita, Chicken Riganato, and the Athenian Chicken Salad. If you order olives or cheese on the side, be prepared to pay. My boyfriend always orders 2 large sides of gyro meat with 2 sides of feta and calls it a day. We love it here!

I've been craving an inordinate amount of Mediterranean food lately (especially gyros), and Greek Islands has done a good job of satisfying mah cravings. I've had a few gyros from this place (NOT in one sitting though......) and they've all been consistently yummy. It's a little pricy for a gyro (~$8 for just the wrap and $11.25 for a dinner salad and potatoes), but they really do load up on the meat. When I went there for dinner I couldn't even fold the pita because there was so much meat. Make sure to get the dressing on the side for the salad though because they also douse that heavily on the lettuce and it can get pretty salty. Solid experiences overall in terms of the gyros.

I'm trying very hard to support the restaurants in my neighborhood, but here's the problem; most of them suck at least half of the time. I went in to "Islands" tonight for a quick bite; just the Gyro platter, nothing fancy, but the fries were lukewarm as was the Gyro meat. My waiter was aware that the food wasn't hot before he brought my plate, as never came back to ask how things were before he dropped my check, and then he quickly scurried away and said "I'm glad you liked everything" (even though I said no such thing). Every other experience here has been disappointing, and one of those times I got food poisoning and didn't return for three years, but at least I got out quickly this time. I'm not sure if I'll be back.

Great service with a comfortable atmosphere. They have greek beer on the menu and serving sizes are large--especially the greek potatoes.

Early dinner with my brother. Had the Tour of Greece for 4 (no fun without leftovers), the always great Gyro platter and the Thursday Special Lamb Stew which is simply fantastic! How such a simple dish can be so enticing amazes me. The food was all very good, with plenty for leftovers. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Still a favorite Omaha tradition.

Once again, a place deserving of an in-between Yelp score. I'd totally give this place 3.5 stars, if I could. My girlfriend was feeling gastronomically adventurous, and I love Greek food, so we stopped in here on the way back from the airport. The ambiance is about what you'd expect from any other Americanized Greek restaurant. The ubiquitous murals of Santorini and Crete, sirtaki music, etc. It took a bit longer than it should for the waitress to come by, but when she did, she was friendly and fast enough. I ordered a Greek Coffee ($3.25) and a Gyro Platter (like $11.25), and my ladyfriend ordered the Chicken Souvlaki ($?). The Greek coffee was delicious, but I was expecting more than a tiny cup for $3.25. Then come the salads, which are on these tiny bread plates, completely overflowing with shredded lettuce. That wouldn't be so bad if they didn't way overdo the vinaigrette. Finally come the entrees. Pretty sure she ordered the platter version, but they brought her the kabob version. She didn't mind, and thought it was pretty good. My gyro was delicious, came with yellow potatoes and was appropriately filling. I even got her to try some of the lamb. I was filled by the gyro, but you can't leave a Greek restaurant without trying their baklava. I thought $3.75 was steep fr baklava, but I wanted it, so I said what the hell. When the waitress came back out with the baklava, I could see why they charged so much for it: It was like a triple serving! Seriously, it was a piece of baklava the size of a large slice of cake. And it was *good.* Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting too much from this Americanized place, but I gotta hand it to them, they make a mean baklava. We both liked it; well, she liked it, I loved it. I ate most of it, and to my delight didn't keel over dead. Overall, not a perfect place, but perfectly decent. I wish I could give half-star ratings, because they really were more deserving of 3.5 stars.

Boo Greek island restaurant!!!! Jeff and I tired to go there for lunch and waited 15 minutes and noone even acknowledged us. The waitress helped the other 5 tables surrounding us and even stood around but never came to our table.....she looked at us 100 times and even made eye contact but just kept walking past so we left and she even said thanks as we left wtf!!!

  • Meg M.

I really like the food and have been here before but had absolutely the worst service on my last visit. If you're going to get food, get it to go. The waitress forgot my husbands appetizer and we never got the chance to tell her because she didn't come back after the food came for 45 min. We waited for at least 30 min for the check and watched her help all the surrounding tables, but not us. She kept saying she was sorry when she came by, but never paid much attention to the fact we kept asking for our check and boxes. Too bad, I'll probably go to Jim and Jennie's next time, where they actually care about their customers dining experience.

Big fan of the Greek Islands. Any meal that starts with a slice or two of Orsi's bread is a good meal. Fantastic house dressing and as good of a Gyro as I've had in town. Personal favorites are chicken souvlaki and chicken riganati, but I'm a sucker for the Gyro platter with Greek potatoes (best in town).

  • Sheri S.

The last two times dining in we received bad service. The waitress forgot to bring drinks and other items, and kept us waiting. Also, the meat was over cooked, and one of the cooks came out of the kitchen banging his tongs around, which made us want to leave right there. We used to really like to eat here. Not anymore.

  • Barry S.

This place is great. Started with the "Creta Feta" appetizer and it was delicious. I had the Chicken Souvlaki which had flavorful chicken nicely grilled and Greek Potatoes that were also excellent. My wife had the grilled Salmon which was also among the best she had ever had. Prices are reasonable and the wait staff was helpful and friendly. We will definitely return if we are ever in the area again

    (5)
  • Amy L.

Very out dated decor and over priced. I got the falafel and it was ok. the salad i got was nothing but a bunch of chopped lettuce on a plate with greek dressing. The tahini was also terrible. The wait staff was also rude when i asked some questions.

"The food is great! Don't be a wimp and get the gyro and salad. Be adventurous and order a real Greek dish...you won't be disappointed. I like Dolmathes, Souvlaki and Chicken Riganato!"

Like a parrot, I echo some of the sentiments of my fellow Yelpers. Haven't been to the Greek Islands in quite a few years due to slow service, inconsistent food and "we like to charge for any little extra thing you order" mentality. But alas, it was time for our monthly office bondy-bondy lunch, so our group of 10 decided to give them another go. What we ordered: 4 small athenian salads with gyro meat, 4 gyro sandwiches, 1 breaded fish, 1 chicken souvlaki, lunch portion. What we got: 4 decent size portions of pale lettuce with pale tomatoes and a light sprinkling of feta dust, 4 standard gyro sandwiches, 1 breaded chicken sandwich (instead of the fish) and 1 chicken souvlaki dinner with undercooked greek potatoes and side salad with feta cheese (90 cents extra) and olives (90 cents extra). Total tab: 77.26. The service was friendly, food was so-so, the order was a bit screwed up AND with a bagillion places to eat in Omaha, they still don't make the top 10. If you need a gyro fix, they'll do, but so would a few other places in town.

  • Frans S.

This place wouldn't last a day in Chicago! It's way over priced, the food sucks, the decor doesn't exist except for a couple of amateur murals of Greece on the back walls. In a few words, it's an American Greek, way back when, Greasy Spoon! The US Food Service dreg supplies that they use are what they are, BAD & Bad for your health! The prep is typical American restaurant, over salted, over sweet, & 10 w 30 weight motor oil for frying! Just what is it with wannabee restaurant owners in this Cow Town that 98% of them serve crap & charge through the nose for that Crap! Tip; you want some fair Greek food, take a drive to Lincoln & go to the Parthenon on the SE side of town. It's not great but it's a major class act compared to this hole in the wall spot! UGG!!

  • Julie B.

I was driving through town and found this near the Hanscom dog park. I ordered a veggie pita to go. The staff were super friendly and accommodated substitutions. It was kind of chilly so the guy offered to grill the veggies and warm it up. The tzatziki sauce was thicker than I'm used to, but had good flavor. I thought the sandwich was delicious with just the right amount of seasoning and would love to go for a sit down dinner sometime. While waiting, I noticed a beautiful mural of the Greek islands on the wall, so I let my imagination run a little wild until I had to come back to reality.

Great Greek Salad Ever! The dressing is awesome, very large salad!! Love the pita bread that comes with it!

If this review was based on food quality only it would honestly be much higher. But all the other problems outweigh the food. First off the waitress forgets to put our order in. After we see everyone else recieve not only their salads but their entrees also we finally bring this to her attention. Then my salad arrives but without the olives and feta that she specifically asked me if I wanted. But the worst part of this whole situation was that I asked the waitress about one of the nightly specials - after giving me the deer in the headlight stare I just asked the price - 11.95 I was told. Well, surprise surprise another screw up - it was actually 16.95 - I realize this is only five dollars difference but the worst part was that she remembered quoting me the wrong price but she would not correct it. THEN - to top it all off she points out the error to the owner and he refuses to correct it. I have never seen customer service this poor. My family has been going here for years - I will NEVER go back.

Had a good meal. My friend and I split two dishes, the Chicken Riganato and the Mousaka and both were good. The Saganaki, flaming cheese was overcooked and disappointing after I had told the people at my table that they had to try it. The Baklava Ala Mode almost made up for it.
