All time favorite place to go for tacos! Every Thursday is $1.25 tacos. By far the best tacos for the price!!

American GI Forum is actually a non-profit veteran family organization. It has an operational restaurant that is open to all. The outside of the building is decorated with a number of military related murals. You enter from the back of the building and proceed down the stairs to enter the main dining room. If you have ever been to any of the fish frys at the local churches in Omaha, then that is what the dining room looks like. Simple tables and chairs along with a bar. There is military paraphernalia all around the walls with a number of historical items posted. Menu is what is best defined as Tex-Mex. We ordered the two taco dinner and the three taco combo with rice and beans. Taco shells are actually fried, which is a bit different for me, but they were good. Tried the beef and chicken tacos. Personal preference was the chicken. Prices are very reasonable....cheap even. Two meals with drinks came to a total of $12.34 cents not counting tip. Worthwhile for you to drop in, try the food, and check out the history on the walls of the facility. Oh and big screen TV in the main dining room with more TVs behind the bar for your viewing pleasure.

This is a real South Omaha restaurant with a real South Omaha feel to it. I go here a lot, the food is amazing. You could open the menu and randomly pick something and you won't be dissapointed. They use Grade A beef and its pretty good mix of people you see dining here. The prices are very fair and the staff are friendly. This is my favorite place to eat and I've been going here for years.

This is the best tex-mex in Omaha. Period. Food is great. Value is great. People are great. By the way...someone explain the review from Calvin in 2012 that says it is delicious, but then gives them two stars. Not sure Calvin understands what stars are. Perhaps he thought you gave a star for each menu item approval or times you have been at the restaurant. Either way...don't listen to Calvin...G.I. is solid.

The GI Forum is a great place to go have a meal and a cold drink and still leave with money in your pocket. It does have a bit of a "church basement/hall" feel to it, but it doesn't bother me. Depending what you order, most food items are more "American Mexican" rather than "Authentic Mexican" food. Their fried tacos seem to be the biggest draw. They do a good job with these. They are loaded with hamburger, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. They will do the trick for you. I'm not a big fried food fan, but will splurge to eat one of these tacos. While they are always crisp and the meat super tender, I wish they had a bit more flavor. Some type of seasoning on the hamburger would really take these to the next level. A little heat to their hot sauce would be nice too. Their chips are freshly fried and very good. A couple of good dips to pick from. Alma dip is always a favorite for the group I go here with. A blend of cheese, chili and hamburger makes this dip a winner. I've tried the cheese enchilada as well...not bad at all! Most meals come with a side of beans and rice which are pretty good! They have a fairly big menu, and the place always seems to be crowded. Thursday's are $1.25 taco night so be prepared for it to be packed! Regardless...I've never had bad service here. I go to meet a group to eat here every couple of months. Every night of the week they have different food and drink specials, but even if the food you order isn't on special, it is still cheap eats and drinks. The margaritas are great and the beer is cold!

I've been hearing about this place from my family in Omaha for quite a while, so it was the first place I made them take me when I was recently in town. The food was delicious, the service was prompt, our server was friendly and made us feel very welcome, and the prices were unbeatable. The total for our party of five was around fifty bucks, and we all got chips and cheese, entrees, and margaritas a-plenty. I got the flan dessert as well (which was so delicious, I was wishing I'd ordered two). Two thumbs up!

The GI forum has the best Mexican food in Omaha? That sounds strange, but it's true. Plus, I ordered Mexican food from trailers in the past, so maybe a GI Forum isn't that strange.

Very good "Americanized" Mexican food here. Guaranteed you will leave full and happy. Tried quite a few menu items over the years, but the tacos and rice is a solid combo. Chips and dips are also all great. Pop in on a Thursday for the taco special. Come early though, because it gets packed!! Service is usually good, but they can get busy and a touch slow. Has a school cafeteria kind of feeling to it and they have sat me with another table before.( Which I did not mind) - All in all a great place!

This place has good tacos but too bad the service is horrible. Does not matter if its busy or not still the same crappy service. Have been here a number of times and thought we would give them another chance. Went to lunch with the wife and sat there while several waitresses walked by us. Did not get served until we finally asked "Where is our waitress??" We got up and left and went Sam's Leon up the street. Better service and just as good food.

$1 fried flour tacos on Thursdays in a VFW-esque basement. It's basic. It's crowded. It's popular. It's cheap. Expect to wait a minute...it can get uber-crowded. So bring your chill attitude, you $5 bill (if you're feeling REALLY spendy) and settle in for some bar tacos on Thursdays. Order at your table. Pay at the bar. Cash or credit. If you love the puffy flour taco, you'll love it.

TACO THURSDAY! Tacos are $1.25. I had 3 and a coke-out the door for $5.84 with tax. VERY BUSY! GO EARLY!

My rating applies to Dollar Taco Thursdays only! The tacos are fantastic, the deal is unbeatable, and the service is prompt. This is a favorite location to take my friends from work but can make for a bit of a lethargic afternoon if you overdo it (not that you would regret it). If you would like to try something besides the tacos, I recommend the bean dip with flour tortilla chips. The dip is bean-y, cheese-y, and delicious-y.

Taco Thursdays are awesome! $1 delicious tacos and $5 pitchers. You can't really go wrong. For $1 tacos, they are big and stuffed with ingredients. It's not similar to what other bars around Omaha offer for $1 tacos. I've been back twice, and it's always a delicious as the first time.

Well i have to say besides the basement look of this place its was a good spot to eat. I've never ate here, but plan on going back. The service is the only thing I would coplain about. Maybe it was a night they didnt plan on being busy and ended up having a big crowd??? Who knows. But to start on the negative... we came in and sat ourselves in a church basement setting and waited a good 15 minutes if not longer for a waitress to come over and greet us. Then on top of that we ordered a appatizer that we wanted before our food of course, and we got the darn appatizer when we got the food. hmmmm. I really hope it was just a busy night and there service isn't always like that because their foom was great. I ordered the combo platter (taco, enchilada, tostada, with beans and rice) Oh it was wonderful. I couldnt even eat it all. My kids got the hot wings with fries, and they loved them. Great value i might add too! It was my girlfriend and I, and my two girls. With our meals and beverages, and my 2 margaritas came to 47 dollars and some cents!! Woohooo! Cant beat that!! So yes after all is said and done i would recomment this place to eat at. Once you get over the basement feel and get settled in its a pretty nice place to eat at,while u listen to the music they play on the jukebox. :))

Greasy and delicious. I would definitely call this tex-mex, and not necessarily at its finest.

I would have to agree that it does have a church basement feel to the decor, but WOW what a meal! 4 adults & 2 kids 2 appetizers, Quesadilla & 4 main plates 8 Margs & 2 sodas Fantastic food & drink all for under $60

Wow. What a great place. My wife and I went here 2 weeks ago on a Friday night. It looks like it's been recently remodeled. I would say the restaurant reminds me of a church basement, simple tables and chairs. The exception would be the nice bar and flatscreens along the north wall. My wife had a ground beef taco, and a chicken enchilada. Both were very good, and very inexpensive. I had the carnitas tacos, which were utterly amazing. I haven't had better anywhere. The refried beans and rice were fabulous as well. My wife will get a meal next time so she can eat her own rice instead of 1/2 of mine! We also had margaritas, which were really very good, and I don't even really like margaritas. Everyone was very friendly, and the food was quickly prepared, very inexpensive and most importantly, delicious. It's highly recommended!!!

There is a restaurant and bar in the bottom of this place. Who knew? Well, my parents. I guess they go there a lot. So we decided on our last trip to Omaha to check it out. Not bad! it is set up like a corner bar with TVs and stuff. The service was a little slow but this is a super casual environment. The margaritas are pretty darn good and strong. Plus they are very very cheap. In fact all of the food was really cheap. The enchiladas were kind of weird, there was melted cheese all on the top of them instead of regular enchilada sauce. The taco I had was fantastic. They do the flour deep fried style that are all crimped at the top so none of your goodies fall out. So yeah, what this place makes up for in atmosphere it makes up for in tasty, cheap food.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
