Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast

My wife and I spent two nights at Whispering Pines in the Victorian suite. We had a great time relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying the beautiful garden. The food was fantastic too. All around great B&B!
It was a awesome experience. We stayed in "the roast" (barn). It was very relaxing, peaceful and private. The bathroom is super cute. The door is a old barn door and decor was unique. The hot tub was wonderful. The owner was very helpful and accommodating. Breakfast was delicious. We started off with coffee cake and banana bread. Then a fruit and yogurt bowl with granola. Our main entrée was eggs benedict with a twist. It had homemade cinnamon raisin bread, egg and Canadian bacon with a special sauce on top. It was amazing. My fiancé is very picky and she made him a different sauce, he was very impressed. I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone who would like to enjoy a peaceful night away from the normal everyday hustle and bustle of the city.
My friends were married here 17 years ago and the setting could not have been more beautiful. The owners were very accommodating and helpful in the planning and preparation. Highly recommend. Would give 5 stars but this wasn't a 5 star place.

El Portal Mexican Restaurant

Reviews:
I don't get the positive reviews of this restaurant. The salsa was bland, as was the enchiladas. The rice was unremarkable yet the refried beans were runny and greatly lacked seasoning. We visit Nebraska City regularly yet this is one location we will not return to. There's Mexican food and then there's delicious Mexican food and this location is neither.
Good food. The servers kind of disappeared after we received our food. But the food is good
We used to eat here all the time when we lived nearby. The food was always great and the staff was always very friendly. We passed through Neb City last saturday night on the way home from KC and stopped by here late. Everything was just as we remembered. This is a very good - and consistent restaurant. Nebraska city is lucky to have it.

Excellent! The real deal! The salsa is excellent.
Great little family run joint! It is small but good! The good things: tacos and tortas!! The meat and flavor is good. The beans are great! They need horchata. The salsas weren't great. The chips weren't homemade. From what we could see it was a one woman show. Definitely worth a stop!
A hole in the wall GEM. Incredible, delicious Mexican food. Home made, inexpensive, delicious.. Try the rajas con creme... worth getting off the highway for!

Very fine barbecue pulled pork, ribs, and chicken with a variety of sauces! Corn muffins, mostly savory and steak fries are superb. Friendly service, atmosphere, good blues and nice outdoor are on the street side. Worth the stop!
Excellent as usual. I always get brisket or catfish. I love the sauces, cornbread muffins, steak fries. The wait staff is extensively trained for impeccable service, so tip well.
I are at Parker's during the week, and they weren't too busy. The service was friendly, even bringing us some fries to munch on while we were waiting for our food. I ordered the two meat combo, which was a nice sample. The rib tips were tasty. My own two criticisms were that the cole slaw was under seasoned and the corn bread got hard after it cooled down. I would go back on my next trip to Nebraska City.

This is a cool hang out. I like this place because they have a beach volleyball setup in the back. I guess they have leagues and tournaments. The place is nice and well maintained. They have some cold beers here. The food was decent. They have steaks and a fish fry Fridays. TVs everywhere and a juke box full of the latest songs. Parking is kind of tight on a busy night but well worth it for the fun. I guess they allow kids before 9 o'clock. Great for that after game party. They even have a shuffle board. Great place to unwind and have some fun.

Kimmel Orchard

5995 G Rd
Nebraska City, 68410
Reviews:
This old orchard is one of three orchards in the area. They have wagon tours where you can pick your own apples. The golden crisp is the best. There is a gift shop where locals shop for apple cider, jams and butters. Locals were buying gallons of cider. We got the apple and pumpkin butters. You must try the apple cider donuts. Go early because they will run out of them in the afternoon. Stop here on your way to Nebraska City.
Awesome little place. Plenty of jams, wines, pie, and cider. Prices are moderate but service was welcoming and warm. Great stop on a Sunday afternoon.
Here with the fam for the Applejack festival. A few changes from last year...not all ofthem good. I'll come back next year, i just won't spend all day here. I kinda feel bad for referring folks to check this place out.

The Avenue Grill

Nebraska City, 68410
Reviews:
Don't let the stupid font on the sign deter you, as it almost did me. The Avenue grill is the hometown diner you would expect in Nebraska city - along with Johnny's, is a great place for breakfast or lunch! I had my usual vice - chicken fried steak, and was not disappointed! Coffee was weak and kept on coming. The service was great and friendly, but not overattentive as some places can be. I'm not sure if i prefer this over Johnny's or not. Both are great small town cafes... How does one town get to be so lucky!? I would put my money on The Avenue as far as quality and service goes... but I prefer the atmosphere of Johnny's... It's a toss up, but I think you won't be disappointed if you stop here some morning for a bite. Hint - Order a cinnamon roll to split as an appetizer. They are great!
The food is good. My wife and I use it as a fun day trip out to Nebraska City. The service is not memorable but that is better than poor. If you get a chance its worth a stop for some old truck stop style food.
Stopped in after visiting the local orchards. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich. All and all the visit and meal were very good. The only disappointment was lack of a filling in my sandwich. I'm used to doctored menu photos but this was a bit extreme. I think they used a single slice of Canadian bacon and single slice of cheese for two Texas toast slices of bread. But the sauce was very good and made up for the lack of sandwich meat. A bit pricey for basically french toast but it was good.

Timber Dining Room

Lied Lodge,2700 Sylvan Rd
Nebraska City, 68410
Reviews:
The Dining Room is actually in the Lied Lodge located about 60 miles south of Omaha. The area around the Lodge is beautiful with large old trees and rolling green fields. I recommend staying at the lodge if you are passing through or as a staycation. The dining room has a traditional rustic feel with magnificent views off the patio. They also have a good size bar. It's Nebraska so the majority of the dinner options has beef. The Brie is served with pickled strawberry salsa. The chicken satay was served with a cream peanut sauce and a mango salsa. These were my two favorite appetizers. The chicken roulade, pork tenderloin and pasta were delicious. They only have one pasta dish. The herbs and sauces made their dishes unique. The service was prompt and accurate. Service was ok. I got our waitress to smile. They have large tables for large groups. It's a group friendly place.
The building is impressive in its own right, but the dining was very disappointing on a recent visit. Now, I've eaten at the Timber Dining room several times before and it's always been decent (which is what's saving this review from being a one star). I was looking forward to this visit since it would be my first since Chef Thomas Mckinney-Stehr took over in July of this year. It was a difficult decision between the TD Niche Pulled Pork, but how could I not order the BLT? House-cured bacon, fried green tomatoes, kimchi, and bourbon-ginger mustard on a pretzel roll. Re-reading that now, I can see what maybe should have been clues to the explosion of conflicting flavors I was affronted with at first bite. Bourbon? Ginger? Mustard? AND Kimchi? What was I thinking? Upon dissection, the mustard seemed to be the main culprit, as anything it touched was rendered undesirable. The bacon was amazing, of course, but I would never order this sandwich again. I will, however, visit the Timber Dining room again on next opportunity, hopefully for a redemption meal. Our server was great, and apple cider was good, but the BLT... never again.
We stopped in the Lodge for lunch and discovered that the Timber Dining Room's version of a BLT is absolutely to die for. Mind you, this isn't a traditional BLT. It's the thickest, most delicious bacon you'll ever eat, a thickly and crisply breaded green tomato, and kimchi, all a soft, yummy pretzel roll. I requested the bourbon-ginger mustard on the side, and am I ever glad I did, because it would have completely dominated the sandwich and I wouldn't have been able to taste the deliciousness that is the Timber Room's BLT. My husband and I plan to come to the Lied Lodge for our anniversary and actually stay in the hotel (we just came for a day trip to Kimmel's Orchard). We look forward to eating both dinner and breakfast in the Timber Dining Room.

Johnny’s Place

600 Central Ave
Nebraska City, 68410
Reviews:
Non-descript, but efficient. Johnny's offers an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for $7.25. The scrambled eggs are fresh & light, biscuits are flaky & tender, sausage gravy is creamy & flavorful (with a pinch of salt added). In addition to that, there are 3 types of meat (sausage links, Canadian bacon, slab bacon), pancakes, French toast, hash browns, home fries, and homemade hash. The salad bar offers fruit (canned & fresh), 2 types of ambrosia, pudding, lettuce, etc. Service is good, if not terribly friendly, but with strong coffee and ice-cold water, who really cares?
Talk about a wonderful breakfast. It is a diner that we found when we were visiting Nebraska City. I had the eggs and hash and never had has before and the flavor was out of this world. Service was pretty good and they were not real busy, but they took time to make us feel at home. It really was one of the best meals we had on our trip.
We stay at the Arbor Lodge every year and thought we'd try new place for breakfast. We walked in and it was packed, you seat yourself. My husband and my 2 children started walking to the back and a waitress stopped us rudely and said there's no room in back you can sit at this table-where 3 men were already sitting. She asked the 2 guys to scoot down and they said they couldn't because the chair was saved. The waitress then said "Jesus fucking Christ" and walked off. And we proceeded to walk out. We will never go back, but I doubt they care. This place is a dump and obviously the waitress is too. Who talks like that in front of a family on a Sunday morning? My kids are 1 & 3. Stay classy.

Arbor Day Farm

2611 Arbor Ave
Nebraska City, 68410
Reviews:
I've only been to the farm during the Applejack Festival. i.e. it was busy as hell. Maybe next year we should take a different approach that doesn't include waiting in excessively long lines and the out of control crowd? Even with all of that, it's still a good time so imagine how fun it would be with 75% less people... many of the activities here seem to be tailored to family activities but there are still fun things for groups of adults (eating various apple products, apple wine tasting (try the fortified apple pie wine!) and apple-picking. Also there are apparently some nice walking trails and the lodge restaurant - two things we haven't partaken in yet but hopefully will get to enjoy as well. A nice diversion from Omaha for a weekend afternoon in the fall.
Terrible service. Went down to Nebraska City for a girls day. Called the day before to see what the deals were and said we were coming down on a Monday. We wanted to do the wine tasting its 4 wines for $6. Drove an hour down and got there, they said they weren't doing wine tasting, because of the apple workers. When we called no one said that they weren't holding wine tastings; this is why we called ahead because of the drive we had to take. They didn't accommodate us. Only asked if she could do anything for us. Not even give us a coupon or something for our inconvenience. She blamed it on one of the younger kid workers for telling us the wrong information, even though it was a older lady that we spoke to on the phone. Don't go here.
No Dog's allowed.
