There are moments in my quest for the perfect diner & dive when I get sort of bummed out by places that want to seem like a dive but you just know is veneer for hipsters who want to seem to create the ambience of a dive while pleasing the foodies and yuppies who want to tell their friends that they like dives, but really just want the safe experience of Olive Garden (mmmm.....bread sticks). Well, I don't. And, if you are looking for authenticity in a great bar outside of a metropolitan area and off the beaten path (unless your beaten path is NE-6), then please give Merle's a try. Friendly service, great food and the perfect feel of a dive for any of us that are just looking for something that feels as if it served by family for family, or by neighbors for neighbors. People around us had walleye that looked great, but I stuck to the Emerald City Burger and "world famous" curly fries. Curly fries came in a funny, big size "loaf", weren't world famous, but by every measure, were good and greasy and everything you'd want. The burger was very very good. Cooked exactly as I ordered it and, in the true test, went down easy with a cold Miller High Life. I will be back, I don't know when but rest assured I will !

I have eaten here only a few times, but every time the staff was wonderful and the food was to die for! Today i drove an additional 20 miles from where i was (I'm already from out of town as is..) just to have another go at it! As for beverages, they have this great local tap selection called zip line and they also have negra modelo on tap! Not too often you come across good beer, food and prices with a very enjoyable atmosphere. The cook has personally came out to speak with me and make sure everything is to my taste when its slow enough. I highly recommend this hidden gem!!!

Stopped by here as an out of town traveler on business. The ribeye was bland and lacked any real substance. The "world famous" curly fries were just undercooked greasy crap from a freezer. Altogether a not so great place. I wish I would've driven 20 more minutes to McDonald's.

Burgers alright, but the curly fries were fantastic. They tasted fresh and handcut!

Good meal at Merle's, great service. Grilled walleye was excellent. Coffee was good. Service was excellent. Kind of a rustic place but that doesn't bother me. Good food, clean restaurant and good service are what matters. Came here after trying to dine at rustic Phat Jacks at 5:30 on a Saturday. They locked their door because they ran out of food! Not a problem at Merle's!

Its 9:45PM on a Friday night. You've been driving since Rifle, Colorado and are heading into Omaha to rest your weary head for the night, still lots of miles away. You're starving and could stand a good meal in a really enjoyable local establishment. You pull out your blackberry, hoping and praying there is a signal. You search Google Maps for "steaks" and see dozens of icons show up. You dismiss the corporate or cheezy sounding. You peruse a few that seem promising then wait, whats this, just off the highway and damn close to my present position? Merle's. Phoning to see what time the kitchen shuts down induces a mild panic. 15 mins from now, food will be no more. Its foggy. Both head and weather. Evasive maneuvers are undertaken and less than ten mins later we're sitting down at the bar at Merle's ready to be fed whatever it is they recommend we eat. Prime Rib, you say? Certainly. Walley, you say? Hell yes. Famous curly fries? Who says no to that? All in all, excellent - home cooked, food. Great staff and very reasonably priced. A great experience. Highly recommended. And additional thumbs up for a victory for the intrepid travelers to share. Oh yeah, there might be jello shots. Maybe. You didn't hear it from me.

Awesome food, and good prices. Try the fried chicken, ask for it spicy, you will be amazed!

Good place. Ive heard others say hit and miss on prime rib, but last two times ive been was a huge thumbs up for me. Now that you cant smoke there its definately a place to go. when it was only place to go to smoke around it was hard to take kids in, even smokers would agreewith that I think. Now everyone can enjoy atmosphere. waite staff was very friendly and fun last time i was there and they have karaoke on fridays after nine. definately worth the 6-7 minute drive west on O street from downtown lincoln for food and atmosphere.

Get the burger! Delicious. My wife had the special, chicken fried steak which was melt in your mouth good with brown gravy that reminded her of her childhood. Surprisingly good beer list, I had a Goose IPA, she had a Boulevard Wheat, both on tap. Service was fast and friendly. Local patrons were chatty and entertaining. Not far off the interstate and easy to get back on.

Our motorcycle group loves to come here. The seating is good for a larger group, and we usually call before we arrive to let them know how many of us there are. I had the hamburger steak which was pretty good sized, but was rather bland. It came with a soup and fries. The curly fries were very greasy and ok, but not world famous as they claim. The soup was really good. My friend had a burger and fries and it was very good. The next time we go I will stick to the burger and regular fries.
