This is my first time at the China Star. The food was very good. I came right at noon so things were fresh and stocked. The traditional Chinese buffet items were in the line as well as some other items that are a rarity at some places. The staff was friendly and courteous. The building was clean. The only problem I encountered was when I walked into the bathroom to wash up, I almost lost my lunch. The smell was terrible and I had to keep my nose plugged and leave ASAP. It was clean but smelled terrible.

Place is horrible! Had food delivered and none of the food was correct. And then the delivery guy ripped me off by saying my meal was $10.00 more so he would get a huge rip and was very very rude!

Do yourself a favor and do not stop here regardless of how hungry you are. we came at peak hour and parking lot was full food was cold and greasy

I visit Minot often because my boyfriend is in the Air Force. This is our favorite restaurant by far. The buffet has so much variety and the Mongolian grill is a must. You can pick your own ingredients and taste, then they cook it fresh for you

Got a hunkering for Chinese food in a buffet style? Then do NOT go to China Star. If you have ever watched Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey, this place would be one of the restaurants you would see. There are multiple facets to a restaurant and this place fails at all of them except maybe one... the food (and its OK but nothing to brag about. They say you can guess a lot about the food you are going to eat from the cleanliness of the restaurant and kitchen. If this is true, then do NOT eat here. During my last visit (within 2 weeks of this post), I noticed as I walked in the landscaping was dying, weeds were everywhere, and the building needed some TLC. Walking inside, the air feels hot and humid while a quick glance reveals chiping paint, holes in the wall, water stains, carpets that look like they haven't been cleaned in a while. Cleanliness is a huge issue here because it makes you wonder if they don't care how the building looks then how is the cooking completed. The food is OK as they have some good recipes but could use some significant improvement. The food has no soul and seems to be put together with no appreciation at all... even for a buffet. My friends remind me that it's not supposed to be a GREAT restaurant, but still there are some basics the establishment should have and they are far from that. Don't listen to the "awards" on the walls.... This place needs some significant improvements.

When it first opened up they were top notch, hence the award they won, the place went to crap, they even use cheaper ingredients in their food to save money , which also effects taste , I always use to order the perfect match now they use the tiniest shrimp they can instead of the higher quality bigger ones, now it tastes like crud. I tried to complain and they do not listen.

We arrived a half hour before closing and most of the food on the buffet was horrible, overcooked, old, dried out

A lot of folks hate on Chinese food here in the states, particularly in the midwest. The words "unauthentic", "molten grease" and "sugar breading with meat inside" are thrown around to disparage and hate against the food. Well, I'm here to say that while that all may be true - it doesn't mean it's bad! The China Star is quite the Chinese restaurant. They offer several dishes in a buffet style, as well as the option of Szechwan grill and sushi. I enjoy them all, but in my opinion the real stand out here is the General Tso chicken. Now at most places in the state, it is served with a gloppy, sugar-laden sauce with a pinch of heat thrown in. But here, the sauce is not nearly as gloppy and there are genuine red pepper flakes in there. Quite the kick to the mouth. The other buffet offerings are your standard fare. They've also got "American" classics for those of you who prefer to pay buffet prices for something you can make at home (seriously, who eats Pizza and Mac 'n Cheese at a Chinese joint? Even if is a little kid, man up and try the other stuff). The sushi here is also well done and tasty. And that's a rarity in these parts. I'm not saying it's the best, but it sure will get the job done when you have a sushi-shaped hole in your stomach. Overall, this is my favorite Chinese joint in Minot. No, I've never had Chinese on the West Coast and no, I've never had the pleasure of dining at the foot of the Great Wall of China, so I have no idea what "authentic" tastes like. But I do know what Authentic-Midwestern Chinese tastes like, and it's fine by me.

Dinner was alright.. only because the chinese ladies werewere rude and rushy! The only good thing there is the mongolian BBQ. If you want a buffet its best to go down the street to the Hibachi grill..

Seriously people you can do better than this even in Minot. Should be called the Type II Diabetes Star. All the usual suspects of the Asian buffet cooked in molten grease and then left to sit under heat lamps. The least offensive thing was the "Mongolian stir fry" where you give them stuff and they cook it in front of you on a really big round griddle. It's slightly more palatable than the rest. All buffets are the suck. Buffets in Minot are the suck of the suck. So being "Minot's best buffet deal" is like being the emperor of suck.

The Mongolian Stir Fry kept me going there. Everything else was meh.

There was one reviewer that pegged the best description head on with amazing accuracy... "Emperor of Suck" First thing to ready myself for was the entire concept of "all-you-can-eat." Then there was comprehending the enormous selection of all manner of food -- and this buffet selection seemed to forget all about continental cuisine boundaries * mac and cheese, stroganoff, tortilla chips, boston creme pie... weird!) I recall standing there, eyes wide, plate in hand and incapable of moving. Eventually I began to roam up and down the aisle looking at all the options - everything glared at me in neon warning MSG MSG MSG! I glanced at the sushi in horror as my mind began to calculate the distance and time it would take to get the right selection of fish to make sushi -- I suppose california rolls would be fairly safe... maybe I settled on a bit of rice, a bit of the mongolian stir fry (really quite an ingenious addition to the less than mediocre buffet, and a few of the crab rangoon. Bleh, Bleh, and Bleh -- though I have to add that the peanutbutter chicken is rather curious - not awful - but sort of a trainwreck on the tongue - not sure if you should enjoy it or spit it out... hrmmm Redeeming qualities: Service, quick, polite - if somewhat a little impersonal. They deliver! Not only that BUT... they Deliver Faster than a Paper Dragon with a Firecracker Tail! ALSO, delivery options are far better than buffet options (ask for no MSG - it confuses them, but hopefully it will someday sink in!) I will never dine inside, ever again -- but maybe, upon a blue moon, when I am running low on little dishes to use as food storage, I will get delivery. CAUTION: Those of you from the West, East, Gulf Coasts, Alaska, prepare yourself -- repeat quietly in your mind that if you choose to embark on this particular dining experience... there is no comparison to what you know... lower your exceptions... and repeat *this is not chinese food - it only resembles it*

It wasn't awful, there were a few dishes like the general tso's chicken and the crab rangoon that were good. However, most of the dishes were pretty below average and the desserts seemed store bought. It's worth a stop if you're really craving Chinese I just wouldn't get your hopes up for something too good.

I'm not sure why we didn't walk out. This place was disgusting. The food was OK, but it was absolutely filthy everywhere inside and out.

The restaurant was not very clean and the staff were less than professional. The foods were not at the expected temperatures. Overall a fail, which is sad because we love chinese food. We didn't finish our meals and left without even a thanks, last visit for sure!

The Mongolian BBQ is really the only reason to go. If you attempt to eat the food they let sit out on the rails for eight hours then you might end up like me and getting incredibly sick.

  • Dennis L.

The last time I ate here was in 2005 but I bet the food still sucks. But the Mongolian stir fry is definitely worth it. And I ate the hell out of the crab rangoons. I would stop by here if I was in Minot again but where else would I go for Chinese food?

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
