Honestly, the best sushi you'll find in this town. The chef, while a little difficult to understand (much like the rest of the staff), consistantly goes above and beyond by asking you what you like to eat and suggesting new options for you based on what you tell him. You owe it to yourself to sit at the sushi bar at least once to have this conversation with him. The staff is also extremely friendly and they are very attentive but not checking up on you at an obnoxious frequency. I will be coming back here for a very long time. This week alone I've eaten here three times. Pros: Excellent food, staff and a nice casual atmosphere Cons: Tables can get a little small if two people order more than on roll.

Came here again and was happy with the generous portions for the chicken katsu and the chicken pad thai. Both tasted good and were big enough to share between two people, with some leftovers. We also ordered the Chicken Tom Yum soup, which I thought tasted off. It came with some fresh veggies and some slices of chicken, but the broth tasted strange and so we only had one or two sips before leaving the rest.

Best spicy tuna roll I've ever had! The staff is so friendly and helpful. Clean place as well.

We tried the Burning man, Philadelphia roll, sake the sake was my first time and it was pretty darn good long with our food. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

Incredible. General Tso was delicious. Cream Cheese Wonton were the best ever. We had a Love Boat and it was pretty good. Overall it was very a very nice experience because Huhot was packed.

Sushi in Fargo, North Dakota? Sounds risky, but at this point I'm a full blown sushi addict so I'm willing to chance it. And I'm glad I did! The sashimi was solid and the Nigiri tasty enough for me to happily get my fix. I was also impressed with the presentation. Service was good and able to answer several questions we had about the menu. Definitely worth the visit.

Samurai recently hired a new sushi chef a couple of months ago now. He is simply the best! Do yourself a favor and sit at the sushi bar, talk to him and tell him to make you something off the menu. We have done that the last several times we have been in and it has been, by FAR, the best sushi experience in Fargo. Plus he is super friendly and fun to talk to. Just tell him what you know you like or don't like. Just be a little open minded (usually a tough thing to do in this city). Of course he told us the names of all the things he has made but I can't remember. I never liked salmon sushi before he made us this salmon appetizer with orange and this garlicky, gingery sauce. It was unbelievable! For rolls he has made us a fairly simple salmon or tuna roll with a little something extra, but they have been so much better than I could have imagined I could get in Fargo. If you have never sat at the sushi bar, take a chance and do it! Or at least go and just ask that he make something unique for you. No way you will regret it! The restaurant itself isn't the best or classiest place, but the chef and the way he treats us will keep us coming back as long as he works there!!!

First, the squid salad is always amazing. I don't think I ever go to Samurai without getting it...and it never fails to disappoint. The rolls are usually equally amazing. My only issue is that they are different every time I get them! My recent obsession is the Rainbow Sashimi Roll. This time they put sweet Eel sauce on it. Maybe it was always supposed to be on there? I don't know. I'll definitely go back and get it again. Next time I'll just make sure to ask for no sauce.

I'm a self admitted sushi snob also...I'm very picky on my sushi. The first test is always the Philadelphia roll...it was quite good. The Sake was really good. And then I got the burning man roll which is a bunch of raw stuff I love....it was outstanding, see my picture. This is now on my super short list of good sushi places.

I'm a regular here and the food has been great. I usually go with the Magic Roll, Fargo Roll, or New York Sashimi. You can't go wrong with any of them.

So-so sushi - I stopped here about a half hour before closing time on a Friday night; ordered the Fargo roll and a glass of wine. The wine tasted stale. The sushi was ok - I love my wasabi and ginger - but the wasabi was a grey-green which seemed a little odd to me. Service was quite good - attentive and friendly staff - even though they were mopping the floor next to me and others while we were there. I was fed and I was satisfied but I can't give this restaurant any more than three stars.

I'm a huge fan of sushi and I like to give everything a try. By sampling many rolls I have come to realize that I don't like crab; especially crab salad. I noticed in their menu the majority of their rolls contain crab which is a turn off for me. Other than that the rolls without crab have great flavor and the appearance is very appetizing. One thing though, don't order the house salad unless you like a plate of only iceberg lettuce. Waste of money.

Awful experience my second time. I swear they were trying to give bad service. Our food came out different times, we were never given a water refill, never asked how our food was. There were two waitresses working (the restaurant is very small) and we were one of 3 tables. My roommates chicken teriyaki udon soup's onions came out literally raw and the soup was flavorless. Both of my rolls tasted like week old seaweed. To top it all off: we showed them the yelp 10% off the bill check in and THEY DIDN'T TAKE IT! Save your money on this below average over priced, rude service, knock off Japanese restaurant.

Samurai has quite a few common dishes you find at Thai or Japanese restaurants. Nothing wowed me but my friend was really impressed with Salmon.. She said it was not dry at all and cooked perfectly and moist inside. Softshell crab was surprisingly good but a bit sweet for my taste.. Chirashi sushi was far better than Sashimi Deluxe.. Tempura comes with 2 shrimp and about 4-5 kinds of vegetable. The best part is the portion size. All dishes are pretty big. I suggest you get a couple of dishes for 3 people and share. Price was a bit high for the area and Asian dishes but well... the portion size might compensate for that.. I would avoid Fried ice cream though.. PS: Often they are out of some ingredients so if you are in for a certain dish, call first to make sure they have ingredient to prepare.

So far worse Japanese restaurant I have ever eaten. May be because it's run by Chinese!! It's Expensive. Me and my Frn bought a sushi roll, chicken teriyaki and seafood udon. Sushi was 'ok'. Chicken teriyaki tasted like boiled chicken served with teriyaki sauce. And seafood udon was worse. It was more like vegi udon. It's a ripoff. Never going back there.

Just a warning to those with Celiac and Severe gluten intolerances - this is not an allergy-friendly place. I ate there tonight with my partner and we ordered the California Roll and the Yellowtail Roll. There were no descriptions written next to them so I assumed they were pretty straightforward options. I also told the female server that I was allergic to gluten to which she just nodded so I thought she understood. The food arrives and I look at the rolls and realize there's crab in one (imitation crab usually contains gluten) and after trying the yellowtail, I realize there's something crunchy in it which means deep friend. Angry and distraught, I talk to the server and ask her what the crunchy bit is and she says "deep fried flour."(!!!). "But I told you that I'm allergic to gluten," I say. She just looks at me and says, "That's what you ordered." I told her that no gluten means no flour. It means nothing deep friend and nothing crunchy. She looks at me without any compassion for the situation and says, "well, what do you want?" To which I say, "no flour!" I was pissed. Pissed that a) She was only pretending to listen when she took the order b) that the menu doesn't give anymore information about the dishes and (it's also largely inaccessible - since when do all sushi rolls have tempura in them?! I've travelled a lot and lived in a number of places and have never run into this before) and c) that she was so impeccably rude. It was the rudeness that really pissed me off. After she brought out the Yellowtail with no flour, she had the other waitress take care of us the rest of the time. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age, a server in a restaurant doesn't know what "allergic to gluten" means. I will never go back and will never recommend this restaurant. I'm even going to send the management an email telling them everything I wrote here. I'm really that pissed off and P.S. I didn't find the food to be that remarkable either.

I am such a huge fan of Samurai! They have some of the best sushi in town! The options that I had at my last visit was so good, I may just order the same thing every time! First, their miso soup is perfect and who doesn't like to start off the meal with miso! Next, I had the Sashimi Salad, this is awesome! If you like sashimi, you will love this. There is 5 different varieties of sashimi, like yellowtail, salmon, tuna, etc. Along with lettuce, avocado, tobiko and a chef's special sauce, which makes the taste amazing! Next up was two different rolls. My friend and I decided to go with rice-less rolls and both prefer soy paper to seaweed for the wrap on one of the rolls. The first of the two was the Fargo Sashimi Roll, so very tasty! It is spicy tune wrapped with shrimp tempura and cucumber & avocado. With spicy crab and salmon on the top. The other roll was called the Angel Roll and was a little more simple. A tune roll with spicy crab meat, avocado crunchy top. This was delicious as well. Too full for anything else, I recommend any of the above items that I enjoyed. I will be back there soon, enjoying some of the same and something new!

Look, I think the sushi is incredible... But the tops of the booths are busted up, the bathrooms are disgusting, and they have piles of empty boxes by the front door. Just sayin, buyer beware.

  • James M.

This is the best sushi I've had in Fargo! I love going to Samurai and have not had a single bad meal there. I would give 5 stars but the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. There are boxes piled in the receiving area that give it a very cluttered look.

I didn't understand one thing, Name says Japanese restaurant and when you saw Menu it says Thai restaurant or Asian fusion. ONE SUGGESTION EITGER CHANGE YOUR NAME OR CHANGE YOUR MENU AND focus on one thing... Anyplace we went to it's walking all over Asia and all the food taste just ok.

    (3)
  • Tim N.

Whoa. Really surprised that I wasn't a fan because I love Japanese food, but this is clearly not traditional. ...or very good for that matter. I mean I know they call it fusion, but it tasted like a Chinese Chef making Japanese food. Which doesn't sound so bad, except it's like getting French baguettes made by someone in Tijuana working off a picture he saw. The soup for the udon noodles was soy sauce water, the teriyaki chicken was overcooked and dry and the whole experience made me question my decision to eat raw sashimi there...

  • Jen V.

My experience was not the greatest. I gave 2 stars because the squid salad was great. The two rolls I ordered both had ingredients, cucumber and tempura, that were not on the description for the rolls. That led to me not really liking them much. The interior of the restaurant was a real turn off too. Boxes piled in a corner, all the seats were torn up.

Went there this past Saturday with my husband. Do not order the udon!!! It was so bland, even after adding soy sauce.my husband was so upset he almost sent it back. I ordered the fargo roll and for sushi it kept falling apart. The fish was watery and it was just way over priced for what was served. The booth had tears and it was not very clean. The waitstaff were very friendly so I gave it 2 stars but as far as food it was not something we liked.

Seriously the best sushi in the Fargo Moorhead area, the Fuji Yama Roll is to die for. Get on it folks.

In my opinion, this is one of the best sushi restaurants in Fargo. They have a nice variety of their special roles and their presentation is fabulous. The décor is nice and the place is decently new/remodeled. It is quite small, so prepare to wait or get there early enough to get a table if you are starving. :)

Being here for a tennis tournament, my first worry was where in the world was I going to find good food in fargo, or further yet, a good sushi joint. When reading reviews about samurai, i was skeptical however when i arrived, the place proved me wrong. My mom and i ordered the rainbow sandwich roll from specialty rolls, and then some more simpler rolls: alaskan, salmon skin, yellowtail. All of the rolls were really good; the yellowtail had loads of chives which i'm a fan of, salmon skin was good and crunchy with just the right amount of sauce, and the salmon in the alaskan was so fresh, although not a huge fan of too much cucumbers. However, the rainbow sandwich roll... mmmmm mmm mmm, it came in 4 pieces, shaped like 4 cute little triangle-like sandwich cuts and stacked like one too (spicy tuna, eel, avocado, crunchy rolled with soybean paper top with 4 colors of tobiko)! so cute and the most creative/delicious roll i've ever had! The staff was pretty attentive and did their job well, not overly friendly though. Only thing keeping me from giving a 5 star is that the lighting was really blue, quite like a sketchy bar/club feeling and the prices were mediocre, but on the other hand what do you expect? sushi is pricey. Otherwise the sushi was fab, considering it was in fargo as well. Definitely will be back whenever in town for a tournament. For those going, trust me, the rainbow sandwich roll is a MUST try!

Samurai was good. The ingredients were very fresh. The decor kind of gives me a headache, though, very dark in there, and lots of blue. I had 2 different rolls, one of which was the angel roll. It was very different. Actually wrapped in fish. The texture was a bit unnerving, so I doubt I'll be getting that again. I found their descriptions a bit hard to follow. The prices were decent but not great. The nice part is that it's really close to the hotels and the mall, so it makes for an easy little evening after working all day. :) I'd like to go back and try some of the other dishes!

Tried this place again, and had a much better experience. Sushi rolls were good, pretty standard for available sushi options in Fargo. Server was a little unfriendly when he found out we were using a coupon. Little did he know that we usually over tip. I'd visit if I was with a group who wanted to visit here, but there are tastier sushi options within the same area of town with comparable prices.

This is my little brother's favorite sushi restaurant, haha! I love their decor and music they play. It feels very trendy and unique. It matches their sushi, which is unique as well. Their rolls are presented artistically and are fun to see. However, the taste isn't always amazing. Not bad at all, but not great compared to other sushi I've had. I've also been a bit confused on how exactly to eat some of their rolls. (For example, a cucumber roll - they peeled it and used the peels as decoration. At the time, I could not decide if I was supposed to eat it all or what... haha). I haven't tried their other dishes yet, but there are a lot of things on the menu that sound good!

This place was great -- do not let the plain outside deter you. We had the Fargo roll, a few sake bombs each and a bottle of the plum wine. Reasonably priced, very fresh and the servers were friendly and eager to please. I do think that the interior and exterior could better reflect how awesome this place actually is.

You have to try the pad thai, thats one of my friend reccomendation when she told me there is another japanese restaurant in town. Pad thai? Wait, thats Thai food right? YUP, they served thai food too. This place is fusion on everything. Usually when they says fusion restaurant most of the time, only some of the food are good, not all of them. But I can honestly say that from all 5 different foods that I ordered here, all of them are good. A little bit sweet but all good. If you are looking for a nice kick from daily restaurant in Fargo, Samurai might be the one for you!~

Samurai has great sushi, and even better sashimi. Of the sushi rolls that I've tasted, the best is the spicy crab. As for the Thai dishes, they are quite good; not the best in town, but there's nothing wrong with them at all. There are also some pan-Asian dishes as well; I haven't tried them. My recommendation: For the first time, go for lunch; it's more affordable. If you like it and want to explore the menu more in depth, go for dinner and try the more extensive menu.

This is one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to! I live in Bismarck and there isn't much of a sushi selection, but I have been all over the world and I like to think I know my sush. Samurai tops the list because they have a great variety of menu items, including good salads and soups, noodle dishes, in addition to amazing specialty rolls and even a few vegetarian dishes. As far as their rolls go, the "Burning Man" (spicy tuna, topped with avocado and pepper tuna) and the "Zen-zen" (vegetarian with tofu) were PHENOMENAL. Both were really great rolls and very unique, not your average combinations. GO HERE if you are in Fargo. It is kind of a small restaurant space but we didn't have any problem over the lunch hour.

I LOVE this place! I've only been able to go twice, one of which was on New Years and it was a wonderful experience! Their sushi is tasty, creative, and it will actually fill you up! Order the Godzilla roll, you won't regret it!

  • Vena P.

I like how they not only serve sushi but other types of dishes as well. I personally like the curries, tom yum soup, and yaki soba noodles. For dessert, I always get the fried ice cream. They're yummy! The service is good. It's a little pricey but the food is well worth it!

As someone who is new to Sushi, I have to say this place is great. Very non-intimidating, and helpful staff. I had the teriyaki (Chicken) and it was amazing. I also tasted the Godzilla roll someone else had, and there was some sushi on my lunch plate. All around tasty stuff here!

Sushi was fantastic. Person I was with got teriyaki chicken and it wasn't that great. Fairly bland, so dropping a star for that.
