Have gone for dinner 3 times and it's now our favorite pizza place. In fact it's our favorite pizza anywhere outside of Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. The crust is always the hardest part of the pizza to get right and they manage to get it crispy and chewy at the same time. We've had 6 different pizzas so far and all were excellent. The apps were also good but we now just get the hummus plate to munch on while we wait for the pizza because we don't want to fill up before it's served. So far we've had the sausage and apple, blue wave, mushroom with white sauce, a regular cheese and pepperoni and 2 others I can't remember. All great. There's only about a half dozen beers but they're all quality brews and honestly, do you really need to try to pick from 50 + beers on a menu ? The sangria is pretty good too. The pizzas aren't huge but 2 of them fill up the 3 of us especially if you go with an appetizer or two. And we much prefer the quality over quantity. If you want mass quantity of pizza go to a chain. Otherwise enjoy some of the good stuff. The service staff is attentive, the atmosphere relaxed and the decor in the men's restroom is awesome. The last time there I stood guard outside while my wife checked it out. The whole place has a good feel about it.

Nice people, great portions and a really nice venue. If you're traveling into fargo I highly recommend it. The Mediterranean chopped salad was quite good

My sister, mom and my 3 kids stopped in this downtown woodfire pizza restaurant on Broadway after doing some shopping this summer. Blackbird tries to use many local ingredients like ND flour and oil and vinegars from a neighboring store pinch and pour. Isn't that cool! We ordered the BLT pizza, a kids friendly pizza and a hummus appetizer. Everything was amazing. We loved the mixed greens on the BLT pizza... We we happy we didn't order salads as the greens were perfect! Note: we fit comfortably in a booth due to the small nature of the 3 kids and use of a high chair. I would say a group of 6 adults may have to split up, unless they have seating that I am not aware of.

Visited this place twice already and have had excellent pizza each time. For appetizers, the cheese plate and bison meatballs are not to be missed. The appetizers are served with their great wood-fired bread/pizza crust. The pizzas are like nothing else in town. Great fresh ingredients, unique flavor combinations and the pizza crust is amazing from the wood-fired oven. The pizza with brussel sprout leaves and their amazing bacon was delicious! Great service and interior design. A perfect addition to downtown Fargo. Can't wait to continue to try the creative concoctions that come out of that wood-fired oven!

Another really nice place for pizza in downtown Fargo! The difference in this restaurant is the quality and originality in their choices. Like any pizza place, you can make your own combination of toppings, but Blackbird's specialty ones are quite unique. You'll have to try the sausage and apple pizza! Sounds strange at first, but then apples go well with pork chops or roast, and they go great with the homemade sausage for this pizza! The dough is handmade each day too--something you won't get at the big chain restaurants--and it is very tasty. A light, doughy, and chewy crust that adds much to the flavor of the pie. Fresh cheeses and veggies are the capstone to the pizzas. Put them all into the wood fire oven they have, and what you're left with is a delicious pizza experience. The only thing that keeps it from getting the fifth star is the size of pizza. They're kind of small, so you may need to order two if you have 2 or 3 people in your party. Totally worth it though!

This place is kinda cool with a hipster vibe and unique menu items. For an appetizer, we ordered the bison meatballs which came with bread. The sauce on the meatballs was pretty good, but the meatballs had some weird textures with the ingredients it contained. I enjoyed the bread. We asked our waitress for butter, and she brought us honey butter and herb butter, both of which were great. For pizza, we asked if we could get half and half, but we were told that with the ingredient combos and with cooking it in the woodfire oven, they couldn't do that for us. Understandable. We ordered the sausage and apple pizza which was good. It's such a unique combo I would never think of. The acidity of the apples was nice against the fats of the cheese and sausage. I also really liked the greens on top. Overall, the place was pretty good, but not enough for me to come back. By the way, the bathrooms are worth checking out!

This was a really great place. An upscale pizza joint that is well staffed with great pizza and bread plates. A must if your staying downtown. There are numerous options. I tried the mushroom which appeared simple and a bit plain. But tuned out to be delicious and appropriately sized for a late lunch. The brick walls have a neat structure and resulting appearance. I like how it added a bit of charm to the establishment. Considering so much of Fargo looks the same to... Me anyway. Will be going back to try a few more items on the menu. Over the rest of my stay in this northern US city. Update: It turns out that female wait staff will rotate to work by the pizza oven. But the full time guys, either find it hard hard or worse yet, intentionally exclude them. This becomes clear if you are a guest paying the least bit of attention. So if you share a progressive view of the world, playfully flick a little metaphorical flour towards those young men. Let's see if they come around and appreciate the meaning of TEAM.

To cut to the chase, I really enjoyed their pizza. My wife and I shared the apple and sausage pizza. The size and price were good for two people, especially considering that we started off with the Bison Meatballs appetizer. Add in two tasty beers and dessert was not an option for me. There were six in our group (3 couples) and each pair of us did a pizza, an appetizer and beers. Two of us ordered the meatballs and one couple did a bread plate. The meatballs come with three large meatballs and five slices of pita bread and four slices of bread. The bread plate comes with a big variety of pieces. Check out my pic to see the appetizers. I would definitely go again. One note is that this restaurant is primarily set up for parties of 2-4. There was one group larger than 4 when we arrived so they took the table in the back. There is a narrow high top table with six chairs that we were able to squeeze into, but it took some maneuvering to fit all of our food on the table. The speed of our service was not too quick but it was busy, plus I took into account that this is a woodfired restaurant so some things can take time. A great addition to downtown Fargo.

Happy to see Fargo getting some foodie places! If you are the Pizza Hut/Papa Johns type of pizza person this is not your place. If you enjoy freshly made pizzas with unique combinations then Blackbird is where to go! Started off with hummus and the Mediterranean Bison Meatballs. Both were incredible. Definitely recommending getting the meatballs. Red sauce was fresh and had just a little kick to it. As for pizza this is my kind of pizza. Ordered the Brussels Sprout pizza which was fabulous! Fiancé order the sausage pizza and added jalapeños. Definitely coming back to this place next time I'm in town!

Heard some great things about the food so we wanted to check it out. We got seated right away and our waitress took a break from moving around the restaurant at high speed. Pretty impressive. When she was taking our order she was engaged but definitely likes to keep moving. We just had the chicken Thai pizza. The crust was cooked to perfection. The veggies were fresh and crisp. The only thing missing? Taste! There was a meagre drizzling of the thin sate (peanut butter sauce). We asked for a bit more and that helped. Overall though there was no depth of flavour. With more peanut sauce mixed with a little red pepper flakes, it helped, but, I don't go out to do the cooking Fun place but really neutral on the food

The pickled plate is great! Its a unique healthier appetizer option and if you come during happy hour its only $3. The pizzas are also very good. One pizza is kinda small for two people but if you aren't terribly starving it does the job!

Enjoyed dinner with friends. Busy place so had to wait for seating which required standing for 40 minutes. Good pizzas and salads. Good variety of beers and wines. Everyone had a different pizza which made for an interesting sampling. BLT pizza was spicier than expected but it was great. Great variety of pizza that others don't have. Will be back.

I've been eagerly anticipating trying this place out for months and months now. Headed here for lunch today and right away, it's a very "downtown" atmosphere, with a modern "hip" interior and being exceptionally clean. The specials on the front looked good, today including cheese bread with fresh herbs that needed to be tried. This appetizer was very tasty, loaded with the herbs and a good amount of cheese. Would certainly recommend. The pizzas were VERY VERY good as well. The right amount of char, the right amount of crust and just packed with flavor. Wish the "large" was a bit bigger though, another inch or two would go a long way in terms of value/filling me up. A couple slight negatives. I'm not sure if it's a "downtown" thing, but the service, due to the only cooking area being the one oven, was a little slow. It took close to a half hour for the appetizer and another 15 for the pizzas, which wasn't awful, but 15 + 15 is usually ideal :). The prices...are VERY downtown. It's a very big contrast from the place half a block away to the north, where you can get twice the pie for five bucks cheaper. Overall, this place is a VERY VERY nice "special occasion" kind of spot. You've gotta be a high roller if you are looking to make it a routine.

Great atmosphere and service (Jodi). The bread plate is amazing and reasonably priced. The pizza is a bit expensive but plenty for two people (we had leftovers).

Love the food and the atmosphere. I have brought quite a few people here. Everyone loved it everytime! Last time we had the bison meatballs for an appetizer. I had the BLT pizza which was super yummy!! Will for sure be going back again! Love that the food is prepared where you can see it. That's always fascinating to me. And i absolutely love know that the prep area is super clean.

This place was cute but the food was not that great. As a group we had salad, olives, hummus, meatballs and pizza. The hummus was the only thing to write home about. For a pizza spot, that's not good. They have a wood fire oven yet the pizza crust was not crisp but rather chewy like a lunchables pizza crust. Their toppings were great but if the crust isn't there it's not worth it. The olives were horrible, I wouldn't even bother with those. The meatballs didn't taste seasoned. The salad was literally drowning in two dressings. They are not fans of serving utensils or knives. We were being served all of these share appetizers with it a knife or spoon to dish them out. All and all I would not dine here again until the pizza crust is fixed.

  • David S.

Had the BLT (dinner size) pizza and split it with my wife. It was delicious! Tomato slices were huge and very fresh. The "L" in the BLT was some deliciously fresh and crisp greens tossed in a really tasty balsamic dressing. It was a really delicous, fresh (almost healthy-tasting) pizza! The atmosphere is really nice. The kitchen is all open viewing area, so you get to watch them prepare your pizza and bake it in the big stone grill. For the price ($15+tax+tip) I wish the pizza was a little bit bigger. We would have needed either another pizza or an appetizer to be completely full.

Actual rating is 4.5 stars I have been waiting to give a review of Blackbird for a while now. When I first ate there during its first few weeks there were a lot of little issues that I felt were attributable to it being a new restaurant - confused staff and long wait times. After eating there a few days ago I can say with confidence that all of those earlier issues have been resolved and they are now producing consistently high-quality and creative food in a much more well-run environment. I always like to order a salad along with a pizza. The salads are always well-dressed and usually contain interesting components (e.g. oven-roasted grapes). The pizzas are hands down the best in town and are deserving of more recognition. The only issue I have is that I feel that the food is slightly overpriced. I think the prices could all be reduced by around 5-10% - just my opinion. All in all, I love the restaurant and will continue to come back to Blackbird every time I am in Fargo to see what new creations the chef has come up with.

I was there for the lunch and dinner soft opening so very lucky to have been able to try multiple items from the menu. From the tapas list I had the hummus, marinated olives, and the Mediterranean bison meatballs which were my absolute favorite! They tasted like kibbi and was really good when paired with pita bread so I hope they consider making a pita and or pizza option out of them. As for pizzas I had one with just pepperoni, the BLT, and the pistachio. The BLT one was so good I had it for lunch and dinner! It has a creamy tangy Harissa aioli and is topped with some mixed greens that has some sort of sweet dressing on it that works perfectly with the salty bacon. The place is also beautifully decorated, they have a good beer selection (I'm partial to IPAs and stouts though), and the house red wine is good. Dress warm though because the extreme winter weather causes the front seating area to be cold - I hear they are working on installing a velvet drape in the front door to combat the cold draft though. I'll definitely be back so looking forward to that!

Excellent meal...had the special Clam Pizza...don't turn your nose up! It was excellent! Perfect crust even with an olive oil base...just enough chewy and just enough crunch. Salads are good and the brownie dessert and rum cake are perfectly sinful and angelic at the same time!

Great new restaurant in downtown Fargo! The food is amazing. Had the BLT and Pistachio pizza's, the bison meatballs, the cheese plate, the hummus, and the chop salad. Seriously love the BLT pizza!! And the bison meatballs have the best flavor in a meatball that I've ever tasted. The decor is perfect for that space. Exposed brick wall, giant wood oven and great artwork, very comfortable place to have lunch or dinner.

  • Marisa B.

The pizza here is very unique compared to the other options in the area. Everything is made in the wood oven so the crust is thinner and crispier but still soft and really good! We ordered the brussel sprout, Thai chicken and mushroom pizzas. The brussel sprout was my favorite in terms of flavor but there were too many toppings for the slice to support. The Thai chicken was good but lacking a bite and flavor. The fresh veggies were nice but minimal, especially considering how much was on the brussel sprout pizza. The mushroom pizza was also really good but really rich and had an overly strong butter and garlic flavor. This place is good but needs to work on finding the right balance between flavors and toppings.

First time here, I enjoyed the food. The service was friendly and thoughtful when helping us order. We started with the marinated olives and buffalo meatballs. The meatballs were excellent! I would be back just for those. The olives were.... Different. Lemony. We ordered the brussel sprout pizza it was great. Wish it had a little more spice but will be back to try more. Recommend for modern fusion foodies.

As everyone else says, you can't go wrong with the pizza here. We split a pie with bacon, jalapeño, and Parmesan - delicious. For an appetizer, we split the bison meatballs, definitely something you can only get done this well out here on the plains, and wonderfully executed!

The bread plate was excellent, as was the 'special' pizza. The BLT was ok, but not one of my favorites.

Blackbird has a nice clean atmosphere, everyone was friendly and helpful, has a modern hipster feel to the place. My wife and I shared four pies with another couple and the meat cheese platter. Ingredients were fresh but on some of the pizzas they were so spread out over the pizza and kind of sparse that you hardly were able to get a full spectrum of flavor in one bite. That being said, when you did get all the ingredients in one bite the flavors all worked really well and were good. Price seemed ok for the size with fresh ingredients and a wood fired crust. All in all a nice change of pace for pizza in Fargo but I have had way better wood fired pizza in California.

Great new place on Broadway in Downtown Fargo. I heard they opened an stopped in for a late lunch. The place is in the former space of a Pita Pit and I must say that they did a fine job in renovating it. It is a fairly narrow space with the wood-fire oven right in the center of the space and the pizza are made and cooked in plain sight. The lunch menu has a series of pizza option as well as a build your own option. I went with a "lunch-sized" pepperoni and green olive. The pizza itself was about the size of a football and was served quite quickly (5-10 minutes). The pizza was fantastic and left me wanting more... I would love to head back for dinner and get one of their large pizzas. I imagine that it will be similar to a Sammy's or Duane's where a large pizza could easily be devoured by a single person, but I may be wrong. Along with the pizzas they have a list of some salads and apps that looked quite good. Overall, this place is a welcomed addition to downtown Fargo and I hope it does very well!

Wonderful food, friendly service. Came in toward the end of the night and they made a mistake on the pizza, only discovering it after the ovens were turned off. They made good. Overall tasty and pleasant, will visit again.

The menu is smaller than I thought it would be, and they only have 5 rotating craft beers on tap to choose from, but the pizza was tasty. The bf & I shared the Mortedella pizza, which was a special of the day & not on the menu. The pizzas are around $15, but worth it for something unique.

If you are looking for fresh, original, delicious pizzas and tapas, this is the place. My husband was skeptical at first since there are already three pizza joints downtown Fargo, but he was proven wrong. Among other downtown gems, do not overlook the Blackbird. Their wedge salad was one of the best I've ever had (that's a big deal - salad is my favorite food :) with the Gorgonzola dressing and balsamic glaze....and the BLT pizza is so good! A fresh twist, and it basically had a salad on top of the pizza...love. When in doubt, ask for server recommendations! We have had the same server twice, and he has been excellent. Check it out!

I went here for lunch when I visited Fargo for work last month. This last week I was in Fargo again for work and my company had them cater at the Fargo Brewing Company. It was a fun event and again the pizza was delicious!! Restaurant has an awesome atmosphere and the catering was outstanding. They brought all the fresh ingredients and a wood-fire stove with them. I highly recommend this place and the BLT pizza.

Fantastic pizza and hummus. The hummus is easily the best I've ever had. The texture is smooth, yet rich and full. The flavor is complex and pleasing, bursting with fresh-roasted garlic that's not at all overwhelming. The bread choices that come with the hummus are perfect. I had the pistachio pizza and the Brussels sprout pizza. Both were delicious, although the pistachio is the only native vegetarian pizza. They were willing to leave the bacon off the Brussels sprout one, so that opened up the options a bit more. Both were amazing. Full flavors that worked well together, even though they're not traditional recipes. The cheese wasn't so thick it clotted up in my throat and the crust! Oh, the crust. Thin and fresh, lightly dusted with flour and obviously homemade. Drizzled with olive oil, it was delightful. Try the sweet, green tea. Seriously. Try it. It sounds weird, I know, but it was easily the best sweet tea I've had to date. It was light, flavorful, and utterly refreshing. Green tea can be bitter sometimes, but this was perfectly brewed. It's served cold and has a fruity overtone that I couldn't quite place. Delicious! If you still have room, get the shortcake. The fruit is seasonal so it's a surprise every time. One order is just enough to share between two after a full meal. The shortcake is homemade and has an excellent mouth-feel. The hints of butter, vanilla, and brown sugar are easily detectable. The fruit seemed fresh and sweet. It was swimming in melting whipped cream and the juxtaposition of the warm shortcake and cold whipped cream was the perfect ending to a truly delicious meal. The atmosphere was vibrant and the Woodfire oven was clearly visible which added to the bustle. When the restaurant is full, the noise level can be slightly bothersome, but not enough to a reason to go elsewhere. Excellent food, interesting atmosphere!

I really wanted to love this place but ended up only liking it. Woodfire pizza is supposed to be crisp and thin crust. The pizza was too thick and almost doughy. The pizza had too many toppings and is over-sauced. I had the Margarita and BLT. Cheese was dripping off the Margarita-it's supposed to be light cheese. The BLT was okay but again dripping with aioli. I would rather drive to the Twin Cities and eat at Pizzeria Lola or Pig Ate My Pizza. On the bright side I enjoyed the bison meatballs and cheese plate. This will be my place or appetizers and a drink after work. If they figure out the pizza oven I would try again. The atmosphere is nice and I like that you can see the food preparation. The service was okay. She was friendly but forgot a glass of wine and seemed unsure of the menu.

First time at Blackbird Woodfire, came for dinner on a Friday night. The concept is good, but overpriced. The place felt a little pretentious to us. The server kind of talked down to us about the beer and the food. The pizza was good, but not great. Decor was nice. May visit again for lunch someday to give it another chance.

I have eaten dinner and lunch at Blackbird. Phenomenal pizza although did notice some inconsistency with size of pizzas coming out at lunch. This crust hands down is the best around. Ordered the cheese plate and Bison meatballs (excellent) and you get fresh out of the oven bread with it......amazing. Pizza was the mushroom pizza special of the week. Again delicious. Wait staff for lunch were in a lower gear then for supper and could clean not only our Table but others faster. Cool decor and great food and you can see it all made right in front of you if you're lucky enough to get the right table. Can't wait til they start delivering!! Great addition to downtown!

Anticipation was great for our first visit to Blackbird woodfire pizza and we were not disappointed. First impression of the building was excellent featuring the old bricks of an original downtown Fargo building. The decor is spare and tasteful. The hostess was great and we were seated immediately. I ordered the summer citris salad and it was excellent--light and refershing and beautifully presented. The pepper and sausage pizza was perfect--thin crust and the flavors outstanding. We will be back to try more pizzas as the price was easy to take. Highly recommemdef!
