Service was awesome! Wings were fantastic! The server really knew his stuff and was great to our party. Highly recommend them!

We decided to give the Toasted Frog a try based on yelp reviews. Many Yelpers recommended the fried pickles- and they are legit! Even my colleague who doesn't like pickles enjoyed them and has a few! I also ordered the elk burger. I figured when on the Great Plains, why not? It was delicious and a solid choice. Solid visit and choice when visiting Bismarck.

This is a trendy little booze and eats joint with a definite hipster vibe. The seating area is spacious and vaguely urban industrial with a mild - yet lingering - smell of mildew that never quite fades into the background. Seating was prompt and service was slower than my Chicago girlfriend would've preferred, though it seems standard for this city. Apparently the servers access the outside patio through the front entrance, so that may be influencing the speed somewhat. They have a well balanced menu - great selection of martinis, good beer list and a good variety of foods. I had been craving a BLT and girlfriend chose their Mediterranean lamb burger. The balsamic soaked tomatoes in the BLT were a bit overwhelming and the bacon was very tough, but girlfriend's burger was nicely spiced and the portions were generous. The sweet potato fries were awesome, as well. Not sure if I'd come back, but it was okay for a quick dinner.

I enjoy this place. They have the best chicken wings I have ever had. Spicy but not crazy, just perfect for flavor. Their menu is small & they have some very strange things on the menu but you won't find it anywhere else in Bismarck. They make very good speciality drinks. A good place to come if you just want to have drinks with friends.

What raised The Toasted Frog from a three to a four is the art on the wall. All of it is for sale and it's all quite interesting. Before all is said and done I may leave Bismarck (I travel here regularly) with some art from The Toasted Frog. The menu here is interesting. Everything from high end steaks and other 'fancy' dishes to burgers and pizza. The setting is comfortable. I love the high ceilings and the brick wall. The centerpiece of the restaurant is the bar and to the casual viewer, this is a bar. One would expect bar food, but as I said the menu offers so much more. That said, I found it difficult to order one of the main entrees because... the place seems like a bar. It doesn't seem like a place that would serve haute cuisine. I ordered pizza to be safe, but the table across from me ordered the scallop appetizer and they seemed to enjoy it. One of them followed that with a filet and I have to say it looked delicious. Based on these observations, I'd say give those main entrees a try. I had the Bianco, which was topped with mozzarella, prosciutto and garlic. It was good. It didn't stand up over time. By the time I was heading past the half way point, the pizza started to taste like a flavored cracker. It was good, but I don't know that I'd try it again. Maybe if they had a smaller pizza for those who might dine alone - then I could finish it before it cools and loses it's umph. The house wine is a great deal and the waitresses was very attentive and accommodating. I will be back. I might try a burger next time. I'll be looking at the art on the walls more closely, too. Oh, and if you find yourself in Bismarck, give this place a try. The food is A-OK. The ambience is nice and the staff is friendly. I will be back.

We're visiting Bismark, today, and I wanted something we don't have in my city, and this sounds like our type of restaurant. The server we had was really nice to us. The Erath Pinot Noir, (an Oregon Vineyard). Yay! I ordered the Walleye Picatta, everything about it I liked, it came with Sweet Potato Fries. Husband ordered Wood-Fired Prime Rib Sandwich. He also was satisfied with his. Honestly, we didn't even bother to check what the YELPERS said about this place, we just went, and we weren't disappointed!

As quite a few other reviewers have noted, the first thing you'll notice is this horrid smell of mold and must that greets you when you walk in; it truly is terrible. It lingers the entire time you're there, too, which makes you really just want to leave. Because of this alone, I really can't recommend it. Who wants to eat in a place that reeks of decay? The fried pickles were ok, but the smell just makes you question if the place is as dirty as it smells.

So I have been to the location in East Grand Forks and have had great food and drinks there however at this location the steak I ordered was not that tasty and the service soso. It's hard to match up to big brother sometimes.......

I've visited this place twice since it's opened. The first time was shortly after opening and it was a quick stop for appetizers and a couple drinks. Yesterday my wife and I went for dinner. It was happy hour and their prices were fair for the portions. The server was very polite and checked on us often. Prior to dinner I used the restroom and couldn't believe what I saw. I felt like I was in a rest stop or truck stop bathroom. The smell was bad and the walls were carved up like you wouldn't believe. It is far from what I expected for the type of restaurant they advertise. I expect this at a fast food restaurant but not at a place where we spent $100+. Not sure if we will go back but if we do we will definitely avoid the restrooms. Management, please invest in some paint and fix the bathrooms.

Great meal after a great trip to ND!!! The pork belly blueberry app was spot on! I had the pork tenderloin and it was cooked to perfection! The sides; green bean and sweet potato fries were fabulous. Our waitress was sweet and had my vodka soda always full! Would for sure come back if I ever find myself in ND again!

Great pork belly apps! 3 martinis and still walking. Nice experience in ND! I really like this place! We tried two other apps and they were good as well.

Great local cuisine. Caramelized onion mashed potatoes , martinis, and filet mignon were delicious. Pepperoni pizza was full of large chucks of pepperoni. Lemon vinaigrette was fabulous.

What can I say but I love The Toasted Frog.....I'm biased however for working at the Grand Forks one when it opened. I love being able to visit the Bismarck one when I visit family and it feels like home. The atmosphere is great, modern and hip decor with interesting local art, friendly staff, and amazing food! I recommend the fried cheesy pickles, caprese salad, and any specials they have that night. They create unique and delicious seafood dishes that are out of this world and get fresh fish which is hard to do in the center of the continent. The Climax martini is awesome if you want something yummy and sweet. My friend Dave is a bartender there and he has many years of experience, very professional, friendly, and his very essence completes The Toasted Frog experience. I am proud of this restaurant and the whole franchise. It is a great place to work and experience as a customer! Check out the Grand Forks one and now there is even a Fargo one if you are in those cities. Great for casual or get all fancy, either way you will feel like royalty. Cheers! Great work guys! Keep the dream alive:) hmmm I'm gonna go there tonight!

Was in Bismarck for a night and the bf and I found this place on Yelp. First thing we noticed when we walked in: the horrid smell traveling through the restaurant. It smelt like straight up sewer and piss. The place was busy so we figured the food would be worth it. The menus were disgustingly sticky and it smelt like dirty rag that they wiped cafeteria tables with. Anyways... we started off with fried pickles which was the best part of our meal! It came with six(?) generous pieces. I ate three and I was already getting full. I ordered the portobello sandwich with fries and the bf ordered the asian ribs with garlic roasted potatoes. My sandwich was sloppy and soggy, I couldn't even eat half of it. My bf's ribs were drowned in sauce but were not bad. I would only come back for their fried pickles. To-go. Never dining in this stank place again.

The Yelpers are on the money about the fried pickles. This place has become my only stop while in town and twice a year is not enough. The bartender is very knowledgable and professional, which made for Outstanding Service and an enjoyable experience. Great quality and wonderful ingredients. I can't wait to return, well maybe until it gets warmer. Great Job!

Interesting menu for Bismarck. Yes, you can have fried frog legs for an appetizer...but decided instead to try the grilled buffalo wings. Different but good. They usually have a few seafood dishes, steak and a pasta dish for a daily special. Full bar and a good selection of martinis.

50-50 on this one. Went there one night and had the best Salmon dish I've had in my life. It was the special. The guy behind the bar, I think is either the owner or the manager, was super friendly and recommended the special. He also knew his beer. That salmon dish drew us back 2 nights later. We had a new server that she didn't know much about the menu nor did she have a trainer with her. She told us she had just started working there. No big deal. We ask what the special was. It was the Sriracha Waleye. I was like sweet I eat sriracha all the time and that sounds great. At no point did she warn us how RIDICILOUSLY HOT it was. I eat spicy food but this was uneatable and taste-less. She was noticeably put off when I asked to exchange my dish but they allowed me to choice something else on the menu without being billed the other meal. I was so put off by Waleye that I don't recall what my second dish was.

Stopped by during a work trip for a beer. Place wasn't too busy considering it's Wednesday so service was quick. Fried pickles were to die for! Followed it up with some pear pie which was decent. Beers were half off during happy hour which made the visit totally worth it. Would have given it 5 stars but didn't try their entrées.

We just finished a client dinner and almost every dish we ordered was sub-par. The service was disappointing and the server seemed irritated with us. Not a great welcome to Bismarck. I would advise anyone to go to Los Lunas instead.

Thought about this and I am comfortable with a 5 star rating. Great service, steak cooked to perfection and reasonable prices. Excellent selection of beers on tap. The filet as I mentioned was cooked to perfection, very very tender and a nice Gorgonzola butter on top. The sweet potato fries were also well cooked and the veggies were fresh and crispy. No awards for presentation but the flavours we there

I love the fried pickles here, they are a must try! I have not ever had consistently good food or service here, they do have good drinks though. I ordered the "climax" -a martini- one of the last times I was here and it was fantastic though!

This place is excellent. The pickles are great. We had them and the walleye fingers for appetizers. I then had the NY strip with veggies and garlic potatoes. Outstanding. Not only that, the chef came out and visited our table for a good while and made sure we were happy. Our waiter was also over the top excellent. Bar staff... yup. Great. Grrwt place overall.

Extremely disappointed... My boyfriend and I have been wanting to go here, but the last time we stopped in it was an hour wait time. So when we realized we both had a night off from work we jumped at the chance to eat here. The hostess was probably the only good thing about this place. She was very friendly. Took our name down and quoted us ten minute wait, which was about right on. We were a little confused why they sat us at a table made for six, when it was clearly just the two of us.( plus they had bigger parties on wait list, which could have used the table size better than us). Our server stops by, seemed friendly at first but that changed quickly. We both ordered a pint of beer, after which he snagged the drink menu away from us. I don't know about everyone else, but when they have a drink menu as extensive as theirs, one would think it would be smart to leave it at the table. Our server seemed like he was either mad about something, he really didn't check on us a lot. We actually had to flag down the host to get another drink menu( as we were both thirsty, had empty glasses and wanted to try a specialty drink item). The menu is a clipboard with sticky, nasty pages stapled together. I peeled the pages apart to search for my next drink. Now for the food, I had ordered the pheasant melt. It was served open faced with a side of mashed potatoes. The potatoes were far from dry, so moist that it was actually taken on some funky shapes. My meal was alright. The pheasant was good. The cheese was melted over the top, but it looked almost as it was microwaved to melt it. My boyfriend decided on the Moroccan(sp?) lamb burger. I would not even feed that to my worst enemy. That thing was complete...I don't know...blah, just gross. He was very unhappy with his selection, and I don't blame him. I ended up sharing part of mine with him. Our server finally returned and we just asked for the check and we left. I was a little bummed because I was looking forward to this visit and I wanted to try a martini ( I've heard good things about the martins here) but we felt so uncomfortable that we said screw it. We most likely will not be back.

Given the lack of late dinner options in the neighborhood, this place is your best bet. Food was good enough altho had some minor bones and overfried-ness in fish and chips. But a fun casual place and it probably has better dishes on the menu that u can choose.

The name is Toasted Frog so you guessed it, we had Frog legs. I hadn't had them since I ate them on a childhood dare in Beecher, Illinois. They were chewier than I remembered. To continue the daring food sensation night I had a lamb burger with middle eastern spices for my entree. Whoa, really spicy! I needed some comforting for dessert so we split their incredible pear pie with cinnamon ice cream. Such a swirl of hot and cold, sweet and spice and everything nice! I highly recommend it. The ambiance is kind of dark and funky except for our table which was up front in a former display window. Finally, my mannequin fantasies came true!

C'mon, Bismarck (and surrounding areas)! Stop dining at the mildly-pleasing chain restaurant and treat yourself to something tasty and unique. The Olive Garden doesn't offer deep-fried cheesy pickles. The Ground Round doesn't have a kick-ass list of micro and local brews. But do you know who does?...The Toasted Frog. The service was delightful and the food was tasty. You can tell the chef is experimenting with ingredients and dishes. It makes me want to come back a day later or a few weeks later to see what kind of new items are on the menu. True, Bismarck isn't known as being a trendy food hub but the Toasted Frog is working on bringing tasty, creative dishes to the town and providing you with a better-than-the-chain menu of beverages to help wash it all down. Check them out, it's worth the trip.

This restaurant will not seat anyone under 21. I bought a gift certificate over the phone as a gift for my 19 yr old daughter who was not allowed to eat there. What a disappointment. The folks who took my credit card over the phone should have advised me of that situation. Followup to review: Jonathan, an owner, immediately responded with an explanation of Bismarck City laws about admittance to bars and apologized for the situation. He was generous with the refund of the gift certificate and once my daughter turns 21, I am sure she will be dining at the Toasted Frog. I hope they put clearer notice of the age restriction on their website.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a passenger on the plane flight in. The food was good and enjoyed the atmosphere. We passed on the frog legs, but the fried cheesey pickles were excellent.

Service stinks at this place...the fried pickles are good but the rest of the menu is pricey and average. Waitsaff all seem grumpy and our waiter forgot about checking up on us before going on break. The other staff congregated at the end of the bar just sitting down while we waited a long time to order another round. It took forever to get our check. Their tap beer selection is pretty small and the atmosphere feels a bit dated. The fried pickles are a quartered or halved pickle spear in an egg roll wrapper with havarti cheese deep fried. Anyone could easily make this at home and pick up their favorite six pack microbrew and save themselves the long wait time time, expense, and lame atmosphere and service. I recommend this place to the less hip middle-aged diners who are wowed by frog legs and crappy overpriced local art for sale on the walls.

Stopped in for dinner about two weeks ago after flying into Bismarck to visit family in ND. Excluding the company of my parents, whom I don't often see, and my good-natured husband, it was pretty much one of the worst dining out experiences I've ever had. First of all, I agree with Erika C. - one is met with a particularly funky smell upon entry. It was a Wednesday and we were seated right away. While, admittedly, I am not a fried-food person, I am fully capable of finding deep-fried foods tasty, even delicious. We started with the fried cheesy pickles, since they're apparently the bees knees here, and the frog legs, because when in Rome. I know I'm in the minority here, but even the cheesy pickles were not good. I won't say disgusting, but not good at all. Not sure I get all the love, but to each their own. And the frog legs?? Disgusting. The breading was about and inch thick - the legs slid right out - which would have been okay, since I was after the meat anyway. However, the meat seemed colder than it should have been and was pretty much flavorless. Alright, so one piece of fried pickle and one bite of cold frog leg, and suddenly my appetite wasn't as ravenous as it had been after our travels. Which, in hindsight, was actually a good thing, because our meals took over 1.5 hours to arrive!!! I ordered a burger, my dad had the pork chipotle sandwhich, and my mom and husband each has a wood-fired pizza - Roma Dakota (with peppers and pheasant confit) and the Bianca, respectively. Despite being busy visiting, we all became aware that the food was taking an unusually long time. We asked the server about 45 minutes in, and he said there had been a run on wood-fired pizzas and there's only so much room in the oven. Fine - I guess everyone in the place ordered pizza? It wasn't that busy. Anyway... We continue visiting and the discussion inevitably turns to, "What in God's name is going on with this food...??" Finally, it arrives. 1.5 hours later! Burger is fine. I have a bite of my husband's pizza. Non-descript. Have a bite of my mom's pizza. I mutter confusedly to myself with pizza still in my mouth that they (the two very different pizzas) taste exactly the same. I finishing chewing and a minute later my mom says matter-of-factly, "It doesn't taste like anything, does it." Well, not technically nothing...salt is a flavor, I guess? But no, it certainly didn't taste like any of the premier ingredients. Overall, as my mom observed, one can assume that the food isn't that good when there is something left on every plate - it's a running joke that my dad is the garbage disposal that will finish what everyone else doesn't. Not the case here. The server apologized a number of times about the delayed food arrival and said dessert would be on the house. We all just wanted to get the h*ll out of there and so we declined. We still had a two-hour drive to my parent's place from Bis! The server did then remove the appetizers from the bill, but even if they had comped the whole meal, none of us would ever, ever go back.

Heard great things about this place and so want to try the fried pickles :) Glad I walked in and decided to give this place a try. Not that there's so many options in Bismarck but I am glad this place existed here. Service was great and the food was good. OMG, the fried pickles! Drool....My suggestion, a must try if you happen to be traveling and in the neighborhood.

Small portions, high prices, average food. Had the special for $18, 1.5 cups of pasta and sauce, no sides. Will not be returning soon.

This place would be a treasure in any major metropolitan city; and the prices and quality blow away most anywhere in Las Vegas I visited. I couldn't quite muster the nerve to try frog legs, so I went with a fried pickle appetizer. Six spears of dill pickle with havarti cheese in a wonton wrapper. The wrapper was a little strange (and bulky compared to the pickle) but it was nice and chewy with a pleasant consistency and I'm a sucker for havarti. I tried an Old Fashioned cocktail- it was too sweet for my liking, but it was mixed well. Dinner was filet mignon with sauteed mushrooms and on some kind of asparagus pate with polenta on the side. I'll be perfectly honest: the pate was bland and the meat was off, somehow. Maybe slightly overdone? Maybe it was aged. Maybe I'm spoiled from Brazilian steakhouses in Vegas. It wound up being just okay. But the polenta? Oh my goodness! I usually think grits and polenta are boring and a waste of time, but this was amazing and probably my favorite part of the meal! It was so flavorful I'd never have guessed it was polenta on my own. (By in large I think corn sucks.) With dinner I tried a Negroni... sort of. The Toasted Frog has a pretty great bar, wonderful interior... This is a place you want to hang out. I wish I could live in a place with this cool mix of old rustic woodworking and more modern industrial design like unpainted concrete and exposed duct work. But the real highlight of my visit was the insanely knowledgeable staff that were thoughtful enough to tell me North Dakota had a bit of a sweet tooth compared to elsewhere in the country, and that they did a LOT of variations and they're own spin on cocktails and martinis. While I didn't care for the Negroni, I knew exactly what I was getting into because the wait staff knew their menu inside and out. It was a great experience. I wish I had more business in Bismarck, and liked the Toasted Frog so much that I just may drive out that way on long weekends to sample more of their menu.

I've had a few dinners here over the last 6 months and do enjoy the Toasted Frog. The beer selection on tap is typically good and the dinner specials are inventive and tasty. Bartenders and waitstaff are friendly and knowledgable of the menu. This is a nice restaurant.

In Bismarck, on business, and desperate to find a non-chain choice for dinner with my coworkers. All this talk of "cheesy pickles" and I knew we had to try Toasted Frog... Wow! What a delightful choice! Not sure which we enjoyed most -- our server's witty banter (and great suggestions) or those darned pickles, but it didn't matter. This place has delicious food and we've already told Katie (our waitress) to save us a table for tomorrow evening!

I recently moved to Bismarck, and I am used to substantially more food options, but I was still pretty impressed with this place. They had several vegetarian options which was nice. The fried pickles with havarti were very tasty! I have had fried pickles before and didn't like them at all, but I heard good things about these so we ordered them and loved them. They are wrapped in won ton wrappers, so not as hot and greasy as your average fried appetizer. I forget what the dipping sauce was, some kind of spicy ranch maybe, and it was also good. I had the pesto portobello sandwich and really enjoyed it... the bun was a little soggy but that tends to happen with mushrooms. My fiance enjoyed his sandwich as well. They have a pretty large list of beers and cocktails also. We will be dining here again soon! *UPDATE* I came here again with my parents who were visiting for the weekend. They were really impressed with the fried pickles too. For the night, the restaurant had some unique specials, like alligator and some kind of fish... I think it was marlin? My parents really enjoyed the fish tacos and the fish special. They were really impressed with the selection, and the unique dishes... it was obvious that they go out of their way to make unique menu items (usually you can only find alligator in the south?? I have seen it in New Orleans but never anyway else). I also had one of the their lavosh dishes--it is like a really thin cracker crust pizza. Mine had roasted veggies and cheese. Yum! Intended as an appetizer to share, but I ordered it for my meal. They also have one of my favorite wines, Cline Viogner. Viogner is a tough white to find at most restaurants but it made me happy to see it here! Decent beer selection, they even have some local microbrews. Definitely give the Toasted Frog a try over the chain restaurants in town. Seriously.

We arrived here at about 6 pm on a recent Thursday night. We'd just arrived on a plane that was delayed and were famished, so we decided to grab a bite to eat in Bismarck before continuing on with our journey. We chose this place because of the good reviews on Yelp and are glad that we did. The first step was to find a parking place. There was no chance of finding anything on the street nearby, so we finally parked in the parking garage at 3rd and Main, which is only one block away, and at $1 an hour, it was not a bad choice. When we got to the Toasted Frog, there was one table available, so we didn't have to wait at all. Unfortunately, it was right next to the door, so we felt like we were in the midst of a lot of traffic. Also unfortunately, there was a group of people at the table right next to us loudly drinking and carousing, which ruined our mood a little bit. (All in all, we were surprised how much of a bar and how little of a restaurant this place was at that hour. One other table that we saw had ordered a pizza, and everyone else was just having happy hour drinks.) We bucked the trend by ordering an actual meal. I had the pheasant melt and my companion had the chipotle pork melt. I'd never had pheasant before, and guess what? I found out I don't like it very much, but that was in no way the fault of the sandwich, which was excellent. Besides the pheasant, it had lots of peppers and onions on it and was covered with melted Gruyere cheese. I was a little surprised that it was a true open face sandwich, but it was easy to pick up and eat like a piece of pizza. The chipotle pork melt was the same except it had a wonderful and spicy pulled pork as the meat, and my companion was well pleased. We decided not to order from the dessert menu, which had some truly original offerings but was also quite pricey. Instead, we thought we'd try the cupcake bakery next door, but it turns out that place closes at 5:30. All in all, we enjoyed the food but found it a bit expensive for Bismarck, and we were also surprised how much of a bar this place really is.

Long day of meetings and driving across South and North Dakota (everything is at LEAST a two hour drive in the Dakotas) and we finally arrived in Bismarck. Famished and looking for a place to eat, we turned to Yelp. Looked like either Toasted Frog or Pirogue Grill would be good and on opposite sides of the street from one another. We choose Toasted Frog and it worked out well. There was a 20 minute wait for a table on this random Wednesday night, but space had just opened up at the bar and so we grabbed those spots. Great casual atmosphere but very well done with exposed brick walls and wood and definitely busy. And first thing we noticed was that bar tender was incredibly well informed on the menu. We ordered beers (Sam Adams Octoberfest on tap) and the bartender launched into this extremely detailed description of the three specials. He sold me on the fish special (flown in fresh that day) and sold my colleague on the filet (probably killed and butchered recently right outside the restaurant... this is Western North Dakota after all....) Food was awesome and service and knowledge of our bartender/waiter was incredible. Way better than I would have guessed I would find in Bismarck. Definitely recommend it if you are in town!

I have probably been to every place in Bismarck that serves food. Quite honestly, the local food scene was pretty boring until I discovered the Toasted Frog during my last trip to ND. It's definitely has a bar vibe, but serves excellent food! My cousin and I shared the fried pickles (naturally) and each got a flat bread pizza. All of it was very delicious! I highly recommend if you're looking for someplace out of the ordinary!

Luckily we arrived when we did because this place got busy minutes after. While browsing Yelp, this place presented Fried Frog Legs. Who would pass up this dish...in North Dakota. Along with these legs, I ordered their Oven-Cooked Pepperoni Pizza. They don't use normal pepperoni which made me enjoy the pizza even more. The pepp were bigger, thicker cuts, plus they were super tender and juicy. I thought I would regret not getting something else, but I made the right choice. I mean, it was the pizza that made really want to go here, the frog legs were a plus. The pizza is thin crust, but I didn't finish the whole pizza still. I forgot my leftovers. :-\

I am not into the bar thing but I heard they had good scotch and thought I would try it out. I went there on a quiet night and the place was nicely furnished, quiet, and good service overall. Nothing really special, but I will be back.

Really good food and environment. Not what I would think from North Dakota but a great place. I had a white pizza and my friend had fish tacos. We shared a little of each others and both were delicious. Good beer on tap and a great variety. My only gripe was that they place was so full that they put us in a table right by the entrance which felt like it was not in the restaurant at all and we kept getting gusts of cold air when the door opened.

We thoroughly enjoyed outstanding atmosphere, service & food! Very unique menu. Wine, liquor & beer selection were extensive. A great meal is a good experience but with the attentive, very knowledgeable & personable wait staff, a great meal becomes memorable experience! We WILL be back.

Some unusual (but delicious) fare. I had the fried pickles with havarti cheese (which were scrumptious) and the hoi sin spare ribs (also delicious). The wasabi mashed potatoes were quite flavorful, and the veggie du jour was snow peas. My companion had the mahi mahi, which tasted fine, but the presentation on the big plate was kind of Spartan. Like the nearby Blarney Stone, Toasted Frog is more of a bar that serves food than a restaurant, but the food is quite exceptional.

I went back and forth between two and three stars, and finally settled on two simply because the three-star description (A-OK) is a bit too optimistic. I've been to the Toasted Frog several times now, and while the atmosphere is excellent, the wait staff helpful and friendly, and the wine and beer list acceptable, I can't get over the mediocrity of the food. One reviewer said it was obvious the chef was experimenting... Perhaps he should first learn preparation basics and THEN experiment. This past weekend we treated some friends to dinner. Here were the results. Entrees: 1. I had the lamb ragù special. The bowtie noodles (really?) were overdone as was the lamb. In fact the lamb was more like stringy roast beef. 2. One friend had the fish and chips. Ho hum. The fish was obviously not freshly battered as the breading was way too uniform, thick, and tasted processed. 3. My wife had the pheasant melt and the pheasant terribly overcooked. 4. Two of our friends had the Moroccan lamb burger. While the spices where very nice, the burgers were not cooked correctly. One had been cooked to death, perhaps to symbolize the Sahara Desert, and the other was very unevenly cooked - but only from medium well to burnt. Sides (fared somewhat better but three had fries and my ragù had none, so take this for what it's worth: 1. My wife and a friend both tried the risotto. Someone, PLEASE teach the chef how to make risotto! What they received was served in a mound (like dished out with an ice scream scooper). The rice was very sticky and it had almost a film covering it. Risotto is supposed to be silky and almost, but not quite, loose. This was just like what you get from overcooking Rice O-Roni. Another reviewer compared the Toasted Frog favorably to Olive Garden and Ground Round. Sadly I agree with his logic, even those are hardly high standards. In fact, chain restaurants strive for average so they can be uniform throughout their franchises. One thing Toasted Frog does have going for it is that only a couple of the Bismarck restaurants appear to want to be great. So as 'bleh' as the Toasted Frog is, so too are most of the other restaurants in town. Because of these reasons, when friends want to "try out the Frog" we bite our tongue and go along to be with them, NOT to eat the food.

I'm in town visiting a friend and he brought me here to eat, and it was FANTASTIC! The steaks were great, the fried pickles were delicious and the atmosphere and bartender were awesome. If I'm ever in Bismarck again I am eating here. Great experience!

I went here a few months ago not sure what to expect, but the waiter we had was very intelligent with what they served and had on their menu, I had the seafood burger which was great, and the fried pickles as well which were also very tasty! Highly recommended.

This is my first review ever, I just felt like it was important to let others know what a great restraunt this is. We ate at several restraunts during out trip to Bisbarck and this was by far the best. My boyfriend and I shared a bottle of wine, cheese and wine plate appetizer, oven toasted pizza and an amazing smore dessert for $57. We had a great time and our server was amazing. if we ever end up in Bismarck again, this will be the only place we eat!!
