Service was great! Food was really good. The $1 drafts were a great deal and the wings were REALLY good! We will go back!

I am a part-time resident of the OBX but have never been here before. On a cold Wednesday night in February I couldn't get a parking space. The little place was packed with, I assume, lots of locals. Probably because it is not an ultra-fancy place. Offers lots of choices like burgers. However the specials were more, well, special. I had smoked salmon and corn chowder with arugula ($3.50) and shrimp risotto creole with Andouille ($18.50). Soup was pretty good. Lots of salmon. Risotto could have been warmer. It was also a little wetter than I am used to. But there were 7 good sized, firm shrimp. Bottles of wine were 1/2 price so I bought one and brought the rest home. Also brought home the key lime pie, which was a very hefty piece and quite yummy - and I am a key lime pie snob. It was a good consistency. But maybe not as tart as I like it. But among the best I have had in the OBX. Maybe not willing to say THE best. Service was very good. They told me I could have parked across the street at the hotel.

Ate here based upon the reviews. The restaurant is not very large but we found the experience enjoyable. Had to wait for a table so we went to the bar and enjoyed a few drinks. The taps were quite a choice of craft and national brands. I ended up with the special, $2.00 miller life draft, I haven't paid that for quite a while so here was a plus. Got a table and the waitress was a fountain of knowledge ( wish I had her name ). By the time she was done I was ready to order and not even look at the menu. She not only told us about the specials but how they were prepared. Wife ended up with blackened grouper over grits which was very good ( she shared with me) and I ordered the chicken and ribs special. I was told by the waitress prior to ordering that the chef was experimenting with the rubs and sauces along with a new smoker. That got me right there as I knew he was looking for perfection. I wasn't disappointed on the chicken. The flavor of the ribs was spot on, you could taste the smoke and the rubs but it wasn't falling off the bone. That being said I would order them again as I shared that with them as they wanted feedback. Ok, when was the last time you went to a restaurant and they were actively looking for the customers comments! I would characterize the $$ as mid priced but affordable for a family. We will go back again if ever in the area. One last comment, the key lime pie was great and the portion size was enough for two persons easily.

Solid stuff at the Kill Devil Grill, very satisfying. We'll return here for grub the next time we're in town.

Absolutely positively the best wings I have ever eaten. My friends and I have been there five times in one month just for the wings. The ranch is also great. Crab cakes great. Can never go wrong with their specials. Service is always wonderful.

KD Grill exceeded our expectations. My husband delighted in the chicken wings twice in one trip. I have not had one thing there that wasn't 4 stars or more.

Great food. Nice people. They close at 10 and let us sit down to eat at 9:58! Atmosphere is simple. I got Grilled Chicken which was over penne with vegetables - excellent. GF got Mahi

We arrived early in OBX and needed somewhere to have lunch before our house was ready. Luck must have been in our corner on that day because I feel soooooooooooooooo lucky that we stumbled upon Kill Devil Grill. First of all...we had a pretty large party (8 adults and 5 kids). They were happily able to accommodate us and welcomed our crazy party with a smile. Our waiter was awesome. Usually a table with a ton of kids isn't the best table to wait on...but he was ALWAYS smiling, always friendly and super quick to serve us. So...the food. ohhhh the food. Awesome. I ordered up the crab cake sandwich. It was spectacular. Super fresh, filled with crab, just enough seasoning. Perfect. The fries that were served along side were pretty damn good as well. We had a lot of happy faces at our table. Everyone raved about their food (other standouts: fish sandwich (with the local catch of the day - with a house made CAPER tarter sauce - YUMMM) & crab cake caesar). We were all pretty full from our meal but we had caught a glimpse of the dessert and knew we needed to get them. OH EM GEE. If you eat here make sure to leave room for dessert. We had a large party so OF COURSE we needed to order one of everything. Key lime pie (with nila wafer crust and fresh whipped cream), apple crisp and strawberry shortcake. All fresh. All AMAZING. If you do not order a dessert you are seriously seriously missing out. Kill Devil Grill was a great way to start our vacation. If you are vacationing in the area (or even if you are not) I strongly suggest a trip here!

Back in town for our Spring visit and we have been three times this trip, twice for dinner, once for lunch. This place is a MUST stop if you visit the Outer Banks. Everything made form scratch. I have had the Ribs, the Ribeye, Caesar salad (the absolute best on the beach) the white pizza, the fried shrimp... Well, you get the idea. By far our favorite place to eat when we are here.

Great food, great service. Wait was too long and no place to wait or park but above all else food was great.

We had an excellent experience here. The service was very good and our server (Fran) was very friendly and accommodating. We sat in the old diner part which was very cool. The food was excellent, we had the grilled shrimp on pasta (which was cooked perfectly - so many places over cook it) and the chicken parmesan special - also very good. They were large servings to the point we could not finish everything. Next time we are back in OBX we will be returning.

A regular stop for us on our annual trip to the Outer Banks. Worth the wait - great food for adults and kids alike. We have never been disappointed by our meals. And leave room for the key lime pie! Just wish they were open on Sunday and Monday...

Hmmmm...their website said they do take out but when I called they said they didn't have time for my order, with no "I'm sorry" or the like.

Great busy atmosphere to take thw kids. Loud enough to drown them out! Excellent service. Wings were tummy, fresh, and tangy! Shrimp and grits were perfectly seasoned. Kids menu available, but portions were a little small. Had key lime for dessert and was good...wished I had tried the strawberry shortcake.

Excellent food, friendly service - get there early since the place fills up quickly.

Great attentive wait staff. Good burger and fries. However, the fries got cold rather quickly after being served. The menu is quite limited so I would take a look at it online before going to be sure you find something that you will like. Chocolate pecan pie was amazing!

Scallops on grits, who knew such a combination could taste so good. It even got me to eat some lima beans. My wife had the crab cakes which were full of jumbo lump and almost no filler, just like they should be done. Desert was in fact amazing. We could see why they have so many good reviews, excellent food and service. The only down side? It's not a huge place (although it's bigger than it looks on the outside), and it's so good and popular that you'll probably wait. It's worth it!

Went to eat on the famous Friday fried chicken day. There was a line at the door at 11am for the 1130 opening. The chicken was sold out in 37 minutes. Our waiter mentioned one day they sold out in 7 minutes. Chicken was absolutely amazing. Won't be able to eat at KFC the same way anymore. The side of potato salad was the best we ever had. Went back for dinner and had crabcakes and cheesestake egg rolls. Also one of the best ever. The desserts were also pretty darn good. However, the best part of our visit was the excellent service. Outstanding.

Wow, what a find! Thanks to some good Yelpers, we found this gem of a restaurant amid a bunch of tourist-trap eateries on North Carolina's Outer Banks. To get to the point quickly, because there are already a handful of good reviews here: The Grill has a casual laid-back setting for the very friendly service of some excellent food. We had a terrific experience and recommend it highly if you're near Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills. Specifically, the crab cakes are to die for. Moist, meaty, real crab meat, of course, and delightfully and lightly seasoned to a pleasant spicy taste. Yum. The tuna steak was no less delicious, cooked very lightly as we prefer. And we'd endorse the blackened mahi with a perky salsa as well. The sides were good but don't stand out in memory. So save room for the desserts. We had the key lime pie (split one slice because it's big enough for two), recommended by our waitress, and it was a wonderful combination of sweet and tart, with a vanilla wafer crust, a dense filling and a strawberry puree on the side (smashing!). Wish we could have eaten two. The service was quite welcoming, the atmosphere casually appropriate to the beach. The specials change often and run out early , so what is recommended one day might not be available when you arrive. prices are reasonable, in the range of $50 for two with a drink and dessert. The place can get crowded, and they don't take reservations, so get there ahead of others if you can. You won't regret it. Note: our comments are based on just one dining experience.

Best place we had dinner in OBX. I had a ribeye with onion rings and mashed potatoes and it was one of the best steaks I've ever tasted...wood grilled...aged...cooked to perfections, perfect seasonings. My wife had the stuffed pork chops and they were great. We tried the steak eggrolls like others suggested and they were pretty good but we liked the spinach and artichoke dip better...it comes with homemade chips. I didn't have room for dessert so I took the strawberry shortcake home and it was fantastic the next day. The service was great and the restaurant has some class...I love the train car interior and the retro stylings. They could fit more tables inside but they don't, so it's not crowded. The only thing I could complain about is that this place is not good for bigger groups...we had 8 and had to split up into two tables since they only have room for six or more on one table (this place isn't very big at all). And we went later in the night at 9pm so we could be there after the crowds and we still had to wait...very busy and popular place. We tried a lot of places in OBX and this by far had the best food.

My friend and I were looking for a good lunch spot after visiting the Wright Brothers Museum on vacation. We found this place via Yelp and were more than happy with our find. We got the wings as an app...a must! They're spicy but not overwhelmingly so. I got the Big Kahuna Burger...it was delicious and juicy. The fries were meh. My friend got the fish special (drum over cheese grits) and really enjoyed them. Based on the rave reviews she opted for the key lime pie to finish it off. I had a bite...SO good! Staff was friendly and attentive, my glass was never empty. Wait was decent at about 15 minutes. Parking is not fun. But the food was more than worth it. I'd def go back again!

Best meal we've had in OBX this summer, no doubt. Things to keep in mind...there is tight parking in the primary lot, so you need to park across the street most nights. And there is often a wait during the season, at least 40 minutes or more unless you go right when they open up. If you are waiting, just get a drink or two from the bar and hang outside until the buzzer goes off. Get the wings. You don't like wings at most places, you say? Wings are too often just greasy, fried up chicken bones that are too hot and lack real flavor? Not these. Juicy, meaty, and not like your standard fare at all. Also, their wood grilled chicken is some of the best chicken I've ever had. The dessert was nice too, but not as surprisingly good as the rest of what we had.

My friends and I were in town for the 1/2 marathon and decided to stop in for dinner Friday night. It was busy but only waited 20 minutes for a table, in the mean time we had a drink, chatted with the super nice bartender. We all had sometime different and everything was fantastic! The ranch was the BEST EVER!! We named it "crack ranch" and we all wish we could go back for more!!! The Fried Shrimp, burger, shellfish bouillabaisse, and tomato basil soup were all AMAZING!!!! Highly recommend, sad news they're closed on Sunday and Monday....during off season :-(

I can't give it a full review because I've only had the "SLAB" of Key Lime Pie...i kid you not it is some serious pie. My best friend and I read reviews about how amazing the Key Lime Pie is here in NC and the best place to get it is at Kill Devil Grill. So we decided that we wouldn't eat dinner so that we could finish the pie. The Waitress was nice enough to tell us all of the specials but we were there for one purpose PIE. I decide out of curiosity that I would ask her how large this "slice" of pie was and she said "Honey this is a SLAB" lol so now when we reference this pie it is the SLAB of pie. It was really good...the graham cracker crust still had a nice crunch to it not too moist and soggy like most pie crust. The tartness of the key lime had a really good tartness and it had that natural lime color not neon green like impersonators. The Key lime filling held its own it had the texture of a thick custard but tasted so light. The strawberry sauce at first scared me when I read it on the menu but its served on the side and it really complements the pie it adds a nice contrast between the tartness of the pie and the sweetness of the sauce. Overall really great experience the waitress was really nice even though we were just ordering pie but i will definitely be back to try their food especially since their specials go so fast. My best friend did end up coming back with her family to try the food and said it was just as good as it looks when we had our slice of pie.

We arrived right when they opened at 11:30 and there was already a line. You know you're in the right place when you see locals lining up as well on their lunch break. We had 6 people total; 5 adults and a 3 year old. We were seated right away and our waitress was on the ball. Every worker that walked by skimmed the table to see if we needed refills or plates removed. We ordered the backyard wings and they were great. Not your average wing sauce; a little spicy a little tangy. Also ordered; red neck cuban, fried shrimp plate; grilled tuna sandwich; kids chicken fingers. We were in and out in 1 hour. Everything was great and would recommend if looking for a fun retro diner twist.

The most important thing you need to know about Kill Devil Grill in Kill Devil HIlls is that the food is excellent, but the next thing you need to know is nearly as important: it's OK to park at the John Yancey hotel across the street. I spent quite a while waiting for someone to leave an open spot. There is no other parking nearby. When we were seated, I asked if there is anywhere else to park. The hostess told me that they have an arrangement with the hotel. There is plenty of parking there. My wife and I both ordered halibut grilled and served on cheese grits. It was outstanding. We had a beer at the bar while waiting for our table. The front of the restaurant is a converted silver diner with stools. We highly recommend the restaurant. If the small lot is full, just park at the hotel across the street. We visited in August, high season, and there were lines. No reservations. But the bar is a pleasant place to wait.

One of the juiciest burgers I have ever had period. The meat was so tender and juicy yet the bun held up fine. The only thing that stopped this from being the best burger I've ever had, was the soft room temperature bun. A slightly toasted bun would have made it perfect. For dessert the apple crisp was delicious and huge. All in all, big portions, great food, and best great prices.

  • Chris D.

Excellent restaurant and wonderful atmosphere. Make sure you have the specials list to you before picking from the standard menu. The special selections is well worth consideration. They don't take reservations, so make sure you get there early unless your willing to wait. The parking lot is very tiny and is murder when busy for dinner. High recommend the Big Kahuna Burger. If your looking for dessert then get the Key Lime Pie!

My first time here and my first review! I felt the food was so good that I needed to post. The wings are amazing!!! Apparently it takes two days to make them...that should tell you something. I had the scallop special which was great. They had sold out of the apple crisp but we had the strawberry shortcake which was good. The wait staff was very nice and did a good job with the fact it was very busy. I WILL BE BACK.

Absolutely love this place. I crave the cheesesteak egg rolls!! They always have great lunch specials, the service is always good, and it's just so dang cute in there. I only wish I still lived here so I could enjoy it more often.

This place gets crazy crowded during prime time so consider going at an off hour if you have kids with you. The food is truly special and the atmosphere is lively. The wait staff have mad skills. If I lived here this would be a weekly visit. I had the most fresh swordfish I have ever had and the most perfect cheese grits. Wife had a wonderful salad and my daughter enjoyed the kids menu. Bruschetta app was amazing and the strawberry shortcake is to-die-for. Will return to OBX soon and KDG is our first stop eatery.

Went back for the second year in a row and pleased to see they have kept up their standards and their obvious place as one of the best restaurant on the outer banks. We have been twice this week again. Love the specials! Hats off to the manager- your attention to detail, quality and great hiring and training remains clear.

The first time I was there, it was in December. Ordered from the special blue board a shrimp pasta dish and it was just so fresh and delicious. My boyfriend got their pork chop and he said that it was really good as well. We ended our meal with a strawberry short cake and that was also to die for. So this time we were about an hour away from kill devil and we just had to make the drive to go there. Again the food was delicious but was disappointed that they were out of their spinach dip. I had a craving for it so bad. They only had a very limited selection on their blue board special so I ordered the pork chop this time to taste for myself. Sure enough it is grilled to perfection. Crunchy on the outside and medium well on the inside. I usually get all my meat well done but decided to brave the medium well and am glad I did. This place can truly do no wrong. So I'm sure you can get anything from the menu and be very satisfied. The service is also great. The server always made sure that your drink is always full. Go here the next time you r in the outer banks to complete your food experience!!

Another great restaurant find while on vacation thanks to Yelp! This place was packed for lunch but worth the wait. It has a vintage feel with an old diner in the front and an addition on the back. The older diner part was turned into a bar area with tables. We sat in the restaurant section which was extremely busy, but the service was outstanding! The menu was a great fusion of typical diner fare and seafood with lots of specials written up on the blackboard. I had a crab patty which was really good - lots of crab and no filler. Other members of my party had bison burgers, beef burgers and chicken - all were excellent. The restaurant was clean. My only complaint is that they did not accept my Discover Card which I have never had happen at a restaurant before. Otherwise, all was excellent!

Went for a kid-free evening date with my wife, found out there was a 45 min wait for the dining room which was fine as I'd already yelped it and the reviews were good. Made our way to the bar and 'wow'! Love the old fashioned Airstream Diner converted bar. We managed to find seats at the end of the bar and ordered from the menu there. Great mixture of locals and tourists & good bar tending that give a friendly, neighborhood feel. Ordered cheesesteak spring rolls (good), beer can shrimp (very good) Sirloin Steak (very good) and Rock fish chowder (very good). If you want a great night out with great food for a good price, you won't be disappointed.

We came here one night at 8 pm, and there was an hour wait and the place closed soon after that. So we came the next night and only waited a half an hour. The menu isn't every extensive, but I chalk that to them wanting to have fresh things so I dig it.. Our server really knew the menu well and explained all of the specials with great detail. The food was divine. We had the cheesesteak eggrolls and the wood roasted chicken. The eggrolls, UGH. SO GOOD. The wood roasted chicken came with mashed potatoes and the juices that they cooked the chicken in were still on the plate, making everything stay so tender and juicy. All the other food we saw coming out looked really good as well. If we come back, we'd definitely come here again. But the only major "tiff" we had was the egg rolls. Appetizers are usually shared (or are we just weird?) and we got 3 eggrolls for nearly 10 bucks. At least give four to make them share able!

Best food in the outer banks! Try the Cheesesteak Eggrolls and the Back Yard Chicken Wings, they're FABULOUS!

Very solid place. Food was good, great little lunch spot that seemed very popular based on the crowd. 20 minute wait which was worth it. Very helpful staff who made experience even better. Would definitely return the next time we are in the OBX

  • Scott M.

Great experience. Food, service and atmosphere were all impressive. I had a monkfish special that was fresh and tasty. My wife opted for just a Caesar salad and it was also good. Attentive service and a solid craft beer menu topped it off. We took a piece of key lime pie home and it was fantastic! Highly recommended.

Great service here and our waitress had a nice smile. Great food too!! Had bruschetta as an appetizer. It was light and buttery with a perfect mix of tomato and olive oil. For dinner we split the blackened wahu with polenta. It was amazing. Others in party had a burger and a grilled cheese. All was delicious. For dessert we split key lime pie. This was the best key lime I've ever had. If you're in the Outer Banks, you should definitely try this place.

First Trip to the OBX, so I was looking for something that would have good food at reasonable prices but casual enough for shorts and flip-flops. We found it in Kill Devil Grill! We were seated and the waitstaff was right to the table (my pet peeve). The wait staff was attentive but not to the point where they were interfering with a relaxing meal. The menu offers a variety of seafood and meat dishes as well as a pasta dish. The food was served hot, was very fresh as was perfectly prepared! I will definitely return.

This is another one of our must have's when we visit OBX. They always have delicious specials and daily fish plates. The atmosphere is inviting and fun! Staff are wonderful, we mostly sit at the bar and eat due to there almost always being a wait on the weekends for dinner. Backyard wings are a must if you're in the mood for an appetizer!!

We went in August 2010 There are so many choices for meals in OBX this one had great reviews so we tried it. What a great surprise! The local seafood was so fresh and delicious! The seared scallops with local corn sucotash and grits was amazing and so was the crab cakes! Staff was great and our waitress Suzanne really knew her food. It was enjoyable for us to watch the cooks who worked hard but still had fun. All in all including ice cold beer and key lime pie it was great! The restaurant is set up like a diner and had no wait when we got there at 430 but by 6 there was a line.

Have heard about this place but have never been able to make it during my OBX vacations. Well that all changed this vaca and I will not miss going again. The 35 minute wait was well worth every minute of waiting. Wait staff worked so well together it was like a well oiled machine. Specials were described in detail, all the waiters/waitresses were smiling and once a plate was empty the wait staff asked if we were done but not in a rush you out the door kind of way. Now food review. The seafood tasted so fresh it was amazing. I had blackened swordfish and my friends both had the wahoo. Both were absolutely delicious. There were also 2 kids meals order and I must say, mother kids cheeseburger was outstanding. Not anything I expected for a kids hamburger. This place will be visited any and every time I vacation to North Carolina. Go and try it out. You will not be disappointed

Please, do not reward bad service. If you like your children to be screaming and service people who do not care about how long you are waiting, then this might be the place. And, if the owner just makes apologies and never fixes the problem do not be shocked. In my opinion, stay away. I arrived with my wife, a friend and her two young children at 6:15 for dinner. I was told that there would be a 35 minute wait. So, to keep the kids happy, I ordered some appetizers and waited outside. The kids were playing and all was well. One hour later, our buzzer rings with a voice saying that our table was ready. So, we gathered up everyone and moved them inside. But, our table was not ready. The people were still sitting there and they had not even gotten the check. As we stand at the entryway, with the children now frustrated since we disrupted them, people came in and out. Another 15 minutes went by and a different table opened up. But, we could not sit there because that was for the next in line after us - our table was still occupied, but it was our table. I asked for the owner, who seemed more ready to make excuses than to solve our problem. He said that the staff was young and that they were tired, and so on. But, we remain upset. After 1 hour 25 minutes, we still did not have a table or a solution. But, we did have tired and screaming kids. We also left hungry. I do not know if the food is good. But, I do not care. This kind of treatment should never be rewarded.

Decent, better-than-a-diner food. I don't really understand the 4.5 stars at all. It wasn't great but the food was okay. I had the crab cake sandwich and my bf had the swordfish. The steak egg rolls appetizer was the best thing out of everything we ordered. The waitress was nice. If I wanted a decent quick lunch in the OBX I might stop here, but it's really nothing special.

Don't let the front fool you. This place is top notch. Had the grilled mahi on grits. Fantastic presentation and I could taste the smoke in the fish from the grill. Love it!

This place is awesome! Great service and the food was fantastic. My wife had fried shrimp and I had the swordfish over cheese grits. Both dishes were served hot and had excellent flavor. The atmosphere was good and our server was pleasant and quick. I have dined at many OBX locations and would put this one at or near the top. Highly recommended.

We ate here last week while on vacation. I had grilled chicken w/ angel hair pasta, my husband had the tuna special of the day, and our friend had baked chicken. There was more than enough food and it was great. Remember to save room for dessert. The three of us shared the Key Lime Pie which was superb. Large desserts, so you might want to share rather than order a whole piece for yourself. The service was excellent. You might want to get there early because they fill up fast and many items are "while it lasts."

My wife and I were in the area for a wedding weekend and were looking for a place for lunch during the week. We let yelp point the way and could not have been happier with the results. It just so happened that we were ~2 blocks away from KDG when we were looking, so it was an easy choice. I had the Big Kahuna Burger. Pulp Fiction references aside, it was a tasty burger. Thick, smoky, peppery bacon. A burger that was PERFECTLY cooked. Just the tiniest HINT of pink, which I'd normally call over cooked, but as juicy and moist as one cooked medium rare. Dont't forget the fries, crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. No matchsticks here. My wife had steamed shrimp and a KDG salad. The vinaigrette used is amazing, mustard based I think. Just enough acidity to keep it bright and fresh, light and balanced flavor. It was so good my wife actually bought some to take home with us. It was so amazing we came back a second time the following day, this time ordering crab cakes, a local seafood they had on special, and shared appetizers with friends. The white pizza and wing appetizers were both amazing, as expected. Service was incredible, and clearly a team effort. It wasn't just one server contributing, if another walked by and had a free hand, she didn't hesitate to clear a drained glass or take a finished plate, and it was all done in such an unobtrusive way you didn't notice until it was gone. Everyone was extremely friendly, happy to have you there, and seemed to really enjoy what they were doing, which lent to a really enjoyable general atmosphere. Can't wait to come back if I'm in town again.

Great experience here at Kill Devil Grill. Our waiter, Michael was super helpful and had a great personality. The mahi-mahi fish sandwich was great! A fresh whole filet of fish hand breaded with a custom tartar sauce. Go if you get the chance!

Service and food were awesome! Swordfish, fish tile sandwich, beer shrimp, kids chicken tender and big kahuna burger were cooked perfectly! Never had an empty cup and the place was packed. Great for kids, people who love seafood and people who don't! Left with smiles on our face and happy bellies:)

Delicious! We are staying at one of the condos behind the restaurant, so we mostly went here for the convenience but were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. We started with the cheesesteak egg rolls, pure heaven in your mouth! We also split their "kitchen sick" seazar salad, which I'm sure was intended as a meal but we just had to try it. We were not disappointed. As my meal I had the tuna special, grilled tuna over stone ground cheese grits with an avocado tomatillo salsa.... delicious! My friend had the softshell crab special which she thoroughly enjoyed. The only sad part about the meal.... we didn't have enough room for dessert. Do yourself a favor and try this place if you're in the area!

5 stars for the amazing vintage logo. A graphic designer's wet dream. (unless you're one of those douchey graphic designers that can find fault with anything. Oh why, because your work is so perfect? Will you ever be happy? I hate you!) Oh yeah, the food. Sorry about that. The meals were outstanding. Unlike Kyle M, I had the option to leave our horrible, misbehaving children at home and my wife wasn't being a pill, so I actually enjoyed my dinner. (Is Kyle's review for real????? Either way, best synopsis ever! LOL, "slightly overweight white people") The place is funky, looks like an old diner or something. Lots of records and rock n' roll memorabilia on the walls. Kudos for those Back Yard wings as an appetizer. Entrees were great. I had a couple of soft shell crabs over grits. I always try and go to the OBX off season, but I'm sure the wait during high season is a b*tch. When I return I will try the egg rolls that everyone is talking about. Desert: Key lime pie!!!!!!!!! The wife bought a very cool coffee mug, but unfortunately I dropped it while washing the dishes. KDG staff, send me a new one, I just gave you 5 stars for your logo and 5 stars for your food. What's up????

Delicious meal here again during our vacation in Nags Head. The big salad and fish sandwiches were great, just wish they'd use better bread instead of soft hamburger rolls. We had 3 desserts; all were great.

Went to this highly recommended local spot last night while on vacation. Had the spinach dip, crab cakes, and key lime pie. As other reviewers have mentioned, the crab cakes are great. Real crab, no fillers, lightly breaded and fried. Served with slaw and fries. While the cakes were great, the sides were just average. But, fries and slaw, so not really expecting much. $23 for the entree. My son loves wings and after reading the great reviews on theirs, got them as an entree. Very disappointing. These are not breaded or sauced - not at all typical hot wings. That's ok, as we've had dry rubbed and grilled wings that are great. Not these. The rub is not flavorful, and the wings were charred. Tasted like they were thrown on the grill and forgotten until they turned black. Yuck. $8 for the wings (12 I think), $5 for the fries (a big appetizer basket). At least they were cheap. The desserts were delicious. The slice of key lime pie was huge and tasted great - like a can of Eagle milk in each slice. Definitely sharable. Strawberry shortcake yummy, too. Not sure on prices for these - forgot to check. Had two kids with us that got $6 kids meal cheeseburgers. They were good. Atmosphere is pretty blah - there is no wait area except the bar, which is too small and hot and crowded. But the wait was short so no big deal. Service was good and fast. Wait staff friendly, but not hovering. Total bill for three adults and two kids - $110 with tip. No alcohol. So about what I would expect for good fresh seafood and upscale homemade desserts.

We've been to KDG every time we vacation in OBX, even if we're staying quite a distance away. Great service, fresh seafood, cute old diner atmosphere. During our last visit, in the off season, on a Friday night, at 5:00pm, there was already a 15 minute wait, so plan accordingly.

Fresh, fast and fabulous! We ordered the wings as an appetizer - the best wings we have ever had! Husband order the tuna burger special and I had the crispy fried flounder sandwich. Both were fresh and delicious. The staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgable about the menu. A great lunch experience!

This place is overrated. Very noisy inside and menu is limited with very little flexibility. Wait staff is friendly and food is average. We won't be going back.

We came here twice on our most recent visit to OBX and the food was outstanding both times. I had the burger and the pulled pork "Cuban" sandwich, the Cuban sandwich was the star for me. My husband had a pork tenderloin sandwich with homemade pickles and a tilefish salad that were delicious as well. We also tried the excellent key lime pie with strawberry sauce but our favorite dessert was the apple crumble a la mode which was amazing and could easily feed 2-3 people. They also have a nice wine/beer selection. The best part was that 2 lunch entrees, 4 wine/beer drinks and 2 huge desserts cost about $60, which we thought was a great deal for the quality. We will be back again! Also, both our servers were super friendly and gave great service.

I chose to bring my family to this place, and when everyone had an awful experience, the whole shenanigan-laden experience was pinned on me. Typical. We got here and were told that there would be a 45-minute to an hour-and-a-half wait to get seated. Why we didn't leave then and there was beyond me. I was on crutches at the time, having just had an ACL reconstruction in my right knee, and was waiting outside in the parking lot for over an hour with my wife and one-year-old daughter. Both of them were freaking out like petulant children within 15 minutes. There was only one table set up outside for people waiting -- and it was already occupied by some stupid, wholesome-looking family of slightly overweight white people (which accurately describes most Outer Banks vacationers). When we finally got seated my daughter and wife were already cranky, complaining about everything and crying at the drop of a hat. For starters, I ordered the Back Yard Wings. Honestly, I thought they were great -- they were rubbed with seasoning, smoked, and grilled -- but it was hard to enjoy them when my daughter was crying and making a scene, grabbing things off of the table and throwing them to the ground. Everybody looked really embarrassed, but this place was so loud that I wonder if anyone was bothered by her shrieking . I was trying to tune everything out and focus on eating. After having to wait for so long to get seated while my leg was in a cast and I was sitting on the dusty ground of the parking lot, I wasn't sure if I cared about etiquette any longer. I ordered the BBQ Ribs as my entree. The BBQ sauce wasn't the greatest on these, and the fries weren't that great either. My wife was in such a bad mood that she insisted that she didn't like her Wood Roasted Chicken and didn't want to eat it, despite the fact that it was pretty good. I don't know. None of us were finished with our respective meals, but we were all in such bad moods that we wanted to leave -- so we left. The ride back to the beach house was awkward. Everyone blamed me for suggesting to go to Kill Devil Grill. We all felt weary and beaten down by the experience despite the good food. I don't know -- I just liked the name of the place. Sounded cool. Turns out this place really was a little like Hell -- I always imagined that the food in Hell would be pretty decent, but yeah, the atmosphere makes you question if it's really worth going.

The service was great and very accommodating. The food was delicious and tasted fresh and of high quality. I had a bacon burger, or the Big Kohuna. The bacon was thick sliced and you could actually taste the smoke and pepper that was used to cook it. My wife had the salmon sandwich and she said it was phenomenal. The chicken tenders my daughter had we're even homemade and served with a BBQ sauce that rivaled all others I had tasted. Dessert was awesome too. I had the apple crispy and it was the best I've had! Price was reasonable. We will surely be back!

Great restaurant - a pleasant surprise in an area of tourist trap style restaurants. The food was great, the service was great. We drove down from Duck and were quite happy with what we got. Best bets were the beer can shrimp, the blackened chicken, and the apple crisp. I hate to be so glowing but my family enjoyed it. Try it.

Funny thing about the Outer Banks... there isn't a whole lot open during the off season. I guess that is normal but when you come and are literally two days shy of opening season and have the hunger only a 5 hour drive can give you, then it isn't so funny. Enter my handy little Yelp app and we were lucky enough to stumble upon this little gem. Crowded even at 1 in the afternoon on a Tuesday, we were finally able to score parking and get our lunch on. I had the crab cake sandwich which was delicious and my mom had the burger which she really enjoyed. To top off, I just had to try the Key Lime pie and it was awesome. Not a fake ingredient to be found and just the right amount of tart to make me not care that it was doing no good for my waistline.

We just got home from a great vacation in the Outer Banks and Kill Devil Grill was by far our favorite restaurant. Yelp never lets me down! Myself, my husband, my brother and his girlfriend ordered the wings as an appetizer and voted that they were the best wings any of us had ever had. They came with a delicious sauce which our waitress told us was buttermilk ranch, but we all agreed that there are some other secret ingredients in the sauce. For our meals three of us had the chicken sandwich special which was grilled chicken on ciabatta bread. It also came with a perfectly simple side salad. The sandwich was delicious! My husband has the reuben and it was SO GOOD! My parents and in-laws also ate at Kill Devil Grill and they raved over the wings as well as the grilled chicken salad. My Mom said it was the best chicken she has ever eaten. The service was fast and efficient and we will definitely be back next time we are at the Outer Banks!

The Kill Devil Grill is a small place right off of beach road. The parking lot was small and full. The front door leads to the bar and the side door leads to the restaurant. There was about a 30 minute wait at 8pm on a Wednesday night. The staff seemed friendly. They were out of a few menu items, as they said they only prep so much per day and sometimes they run out. We were fine with that, prefer fresh and unavailable to frozen and available :) We ordered the Steamed Shrimp appetizer special ($10), Crab Cake dinner($21) & the Seared Scallops with grits special ($20) with a slice of Keylime pie ($6) for dessert. The shrimp were very large, but a bit pricey at $20/lb. The crabcakes were crispy and delicious and included cole slaw (eh), fries and homemade tartar sauce (which I didn't care for..thinking maybe I don't like capers?). The scallops were perfectly seared and delicious. And the keylime pie was A-MAZINGLY good! Don't let the 'diner' atmosphere fool you.. the food is pretty gourmet! IMHO, I'd go out of my way just for the pie! And the fresh, local seafood is an added bonus!

There is good food to be had on the Outer Banks but none better then Kill Devil Grill. It is not fine dining but it is damn good dining. The service is just as good as the food. Last night we had dinner of the special board and the wahoo was perfectly cooked. One thing I am not generally fond of is chicken wings, but the wing appetizer even met my taste. These folks have it figured out, go there and be happy

Excellent tortillas and dip. The crab cake had too much crab in it. Too much noise. Too much of a wait.

For a simple grill on the beach you get very high quality food, in a quaint atmosphere, served by a enthusiastic team of professionals. Combine this with a great bar area and reasonable prices, and you have a recipe for success.

Awesome experience! Came here with our family of five around 5 o clock and we had to wait about twenty minutes, I guess the place never slows down! Here's some advice for your best stay! 1. Arrive early, the place is small inside and had limited seating. We arrived before we typically ate dinner and had to wait a while for a table to open up. 2. The earlier you arrive, the more likely you'll have access to their special plates. We arrived before the typical dinner rush and there were no calamari appetizers, my dad got the last order of mahi mahi, and there was already an item 86'd! 3. Everything on the menu is great, order what your heart desires. Ordered wings and the grilled chicken which was tasty. 4. We've heard rave reviews about the dessert so our table ordered one of each. Lets just say I thought I didn't like key like pie and by the end of the night I did. The apple crisp rivals it!

This is my go to on the OBX. I normally go 2-3x during a one week stay. Have not had a bad dish. Go early or you will wait in the peak vacation season. I will be back this summer. The desserts are fantastic. Thursday nights are $1.00 beer which is great! Wings and steak and cheese eggrolls are a must try.

We were recommended to Kill Devil Grill by an employee of the resort where we stayed. We went on a Monday but found out by an empty parking lot they are closed on Mondays so we returned on Tuesday. The food was great! So good, we went back on Thursday. We had the wings for an appetizer on both days. Their homemade sauce is amazing. Their shrimp and cheese grits are some of the best I have had. The Rockfish and the Key Lime pie were good as well. On the second night, we had the NY Strip and the crab cakes, both of which were very good. We highly recommend Kill Devil Grill.

Was recommended by a friend to check them out. Walked in around 730pm on a Friday night. The place was very busy and had already had a wait of 35mins. That didn't bother me, I went straight to the bar. The two bartenders were very nice and quick to serve you. Being the only "brother" in the place I felt a little uncomfortable and chose to get my food to go. Before placing my order I had gotten a spiced rum and coke. Not as stiff as I would have liked but it wasn't weak. I ordered the cheesesteak egg rolls and the khuna burger. While waiting one of the bartenders ( Michael) and I sparked up a convo. Turned out we were both from the DC area. Michael was super nice and probably the only reason I would go back. Now for the pre mentioned food. The egg rolls were not what I was expecting. Hell I honestly didn't know what to expect. The steak was good but the cheese and grease were not. Probably try the wings next time. The burger was very good, huge patty with a hand full of shredded lettuce. They didn't ask how I wanted the burger cooked but luckily it was well done. I freak out if I see red in any of my meats. All in all if your looking for a sit down meal with the family I would suggest this place or if your just stopping by to grab a beer. Ask for Michael, he was super cool. Also the red hair waitress was a cutie with a booty. Would visit again just to see her. Keep doing what you guys are doing.

Wow. This place wins. I had the crab cake atop Caesar salad and it was SUPERB. I don't even like Caesar salad!! Heck, I'm not even a big fan of crab cakes! But I was confident I would not be disappointed, and it was incredible! My meal was $13, which is pretty good when you consider crappy chains charge $10 for a mediocre salad with dry chicken. I then shared a massive slice of key lime pie with hubs and mother-in-law. We all loved it. I really appreciate that they did NOT add green food coloring, like 99% of places do just to make it look "limey." Our waitress was fabulous. What really stood out was that we were sat in the front "diner" area because they have a policy of seating no fewer than 4 people at a booth in the main dining area. We were perfectly fine with that and didn't complain. They ended up seating some smaller parties at those tables, then decided to comp our dessert! Customer service at its best!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!

KDG was recommended by someone in Edenton NC(2 hrs away) This place has a reputation and it is well deserved. Sat and ate at the bar. Staff-Michael and Bridgette, not intrusive, not upsellers, but on the money for professional, efficient, friendly service. Great menu, great dishes, good drinks.

For an appetizer we had the Artichoke Spinach dip with homemade flour tortilla chips. Exceptionally good. I had the Lump Crab Cakes with slaw and and fries. The Crab Cakes were cooked to perfection with a pan seared crust. Definitely sweet fresh crab meat in these!!! My Wife had the flat iron Steak cooked medium with Mashers and grilled Zucchini. Again cooked to perfection. Kill Devil Grill does not have a big menu but with what they have they do extremely well. If there were six stars I would give them.

Went to Kill Devil Grill, which came highly recommended by a local, under pressure - Yep - my Mother in Law joined us for our vacation - Yippee!! Not only was the cottage choice under scrutiny, but so was the first dinner pic of the week.... Some choose to judge by the dinner and wine choices - must be tuff living in a box that small. First choice for dinner was a shut out with a 1 hour wait (Tortugas Lie - also fab!) so ended up at KDG... They say stuff happens for a reason - This one was a home run! They've got an old English bar game in the parking lot/waiting area - and some rustic bar seating to sip your fab cocktail or beer while waiting and chuckle at the bar game attempt-ees. The hubby had the pound of steamed spiced shrimp and a salad, which was a total winner. MIL and I had the chicken medallions with angel hair pasta - FANTASTIC! To top it all off, MIL and I had the Blueberry Vodka Lemonade.... Why didn't we see this before?? Wow..... Open Tues-Sat - and worth any wait they say! You won't be disappointed....

The inn keepers where we are staying recommended Kill Devil Grill. We went for lunch on a Saturday. We were seated immediately. We started off with the grilled white pizza. It was a thin crust, with goat cheese, roasted tomatoes and basil. I could have had that little thing for my lunch! Divine. I ordered the Savannah Chicken sandwich. It was one of their daily specials. The list of specials was quite extensive. It was served with a small side of cole slaw and fries. The cole slaw was of course to be put on the pulled chicken sandwich. It was messy to eat, but totally worth it -really flavorful! My husband ordered the crab cake sandwich, also served with fries. This comes with their housemade tartar sauce. He said it was one of the best crab cakes he's had. It wasn't full of filler, all crab. We loved our experience so much, that we went back for dinner. They are only open Tuesday - Saturday and we wouldn't still be here on Tuesday. The restaurant isn't large and was packed as we expected. We arrived around 7:45 and waited 40 minutes. Once we were seated, the services was quick and attentive. For dinner, I ordered the southern fried chicken salad. I miss good fried chicken now that I live in Upstate NY and this passed with flying colors. The batter was light, crispy and had a little peppery kick. The salad had cucumbers, tomatoes, freshly cooked bacon pieces, and fresh corn right off the cob. The dressing was housemade buttermilk garlic. I would order this salad again in a heartbeat. My husband ordered the big kahuna burger. It was topped with cheddar, bacon, grilled onions and the usual burger accompaniments. It was very juicy and worth at least double the $8.50 we paid for it. We had been tipped off that their key lime pie was to die for and were not misled at all. We took a piece to go and ate every last bite! The crust was out of this world buttery and the pie filling was beyond creamy. I would get it again without thinking twice. Aside from the food being on par, the staff is incredible. They worked as a team more than any wait staff I have seen in a long time. I tend to be a stickler for good customer service, but definitely don't mind tipping well when I receive something special. This was the case with both our experiences at Kill Devil Grill. We hope to make it back to the Outer Banks again and without hesitation, Kill Devil Grill will be on our list.

Had one of the specials. Soft shell crabs over cheese grits with a fresh black bean/ corn/tomato salsa. Yum!! So good. Not too much to eat, it was just right. Prompt and friendly service. Dont let "diner" fool you. This is a nice dinner and comes with a price tag. About 20-25 per entree for the specials. But worth it. It gets busy in the evening, so plan ahead. You can also get a beer (they have PBR in cans!) at the counter while you wait.

Blackened wahoo with polenta was amazing and so was the dark chocolate pecan pie. Really enjoyed the BBQ shrimp as well. Great service too. Only minor complaint, the polenta could have been warmer. Definitely would go back.

First, I must say that I use a different set of expectations for tourist trap eateries. For Kill Devil Grill, I have to set that aside. This place nearly made our vacation to the Outer Banks. For the first time in many years, I was close to returning to a restaurant while on vacation. Looking back, I wish I had. For starters, the wings. Oh my, the wings. It takes quite a bit to make wings this memorable. In fact, they were SO amazing that I nearly had them for dinner as well as a starter. Par-cooked, grilled to order and then tossed in a not-your-average hot sauce, they were crunchy, tender and very flavorful. Next, we shared the crab cake (very little filler) and the soft-shell blue crab, both specials. I am not usually a huge crab fan (maybe because I'm from a land-locked state and only have them frozen), but these were both delicious. I also must compliment that, though the regular menu had some items that appealed, the list of specials was almost as long. This tells me that the chef is utilizing seasonal, local offerings which is usually more eco-friendly as well as more fresh and tells a little more about the place you're visiting (and, duh, more delicious). They even had a half-price special on ALL bottles of wine. A crisp sauvignon blanc with fresh crab? Yes, please. Finally, the key lime pie. Again, not usually a fan, but I vow to figure out how to replicate. "Good luck" the server told me. She has the actual recipe and still can't make it as creamy, tart and silken. As wonderful as the rest of the meal was, this was the center for me. It was, I dare say, phenomenal. Definitely worth the five stars.

My whole trip has been amazing so far here in Outer Banks and ive been handing out 5 star reviews like candy. To be quite honest though the other restaurants are pretty lucky I went to them first. This place blows them all out of the water. The restaurant is very clean the staff is very nice and the food was out of this universe amazing. I had a simple fried shrimp meal with fries and slaw. The shrimp was lightly battered and tasted amazing. Other amazing meals I sampled were crab cake salad and Amberjack which was the catch of the day. All entrees I tried were 5/5. If I had went to this venue before others I would be inclined to hand out 3 and 4 star reviews.

We arrived at 4:30 (14 of us). The hostess seemed a little overwhelmed at first but was able to seat us immediately. The food was very good. I ordered the tuna steak special for $21.99. It was very good but the portion was smaller than I was expecting for the price. The food came out at a reasonable time considering the size of our party. All in all, a very good place to eat.

We stopped here on our first night ever in the OBX... Food was absolutely fantastic. You must try their smoked buffalo wings and the key lime pie was the best either of us had ever had. Bottom line, unreal food- we'll be going back here for years to come!

This restaurant is totally ridiculous! It should be illegal for food to taste this good!!! I started my meal with an order of Cheesesteak Eggrolls. These are quite easily the most delectable appetizer to ever cross my lips! They are simply what one would imagine...tender steak and cheese wrapped in an eggroll wrapper and fried to perfection! I could eat a gallon of the accompanying marinara sauce alone!!! For my main course I ordered the grilled salmon salad. The salmon was fresh and grilled perfectly. The salads here are unbelievably delicious, with crisp, bite-size ingredients and dressed just right. The flavors of the combined ingredients work so well with one another! My perfectly grilled salmon sat atop mixed greens, cut corn, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, goat cheese, with basil citrus vinaigrette. I honestly could not get enough! And we're talking salad here!!!!! We were way too full for dessert, but feel quite certain we might venture back to try the amazing-looking apple crisp and/or strawberry shortcake. This restaurant very well might be the best restaurant I ever visited, especially for the cost. While not cheap, the food they serve could/should be found in high-end restaurants for 2x the price! It truly is a gourmet meal in a "dive" atmosphere! If I had my wish, this would be the only place we eat our entire week at the OBX.

My boyfriend and I like to try new places so I followed other Yelp recommendations to try Kill Devil Grill as we were in the mood for burgers/steak. Pros: The food was very, very good. All the reviews are spot on about the quality of the food. I had the sirloin and it was perfectly rare and my boyfriend had the Big Kahuna Burger, which he enjoyed. We both had strawberry shortcake and it was great. Cons: Noisy and crowded. I know this is not an issue for some, but I like to be able to hear my guy from across the table. I realize that this is the style of the place, so it's more of a personal issue for me. Overall, the food made up for the noise and the prices were very fair. I will definitely recommend Kill Devil Hills to others.

Very busy little place, but worth it. A diner type atmosphere with an up to date menu offering a list of today's specials which run out if you don't get there earlier enough. It will include fresh fish of the day too. Ordered grilled chicken sandwich, ceaser salad, bbq & pb&j. All very good! Kids get a free ice cream with their meal. Went about 1:00 pm on a Wednesday and waited about 15 minutes. Wait staff very friendly and attentive.

We came here the last night while we were in the Outer Banks. At first we thought we couldn't get in because the parking lot was packed and it was only 5:30PM on a Wednesday night! It was also pouring, but we decided to park by a nearby public lot for the beach. We got drenched getting to the restaurant but it was so worth it! There was about a 25 minute wait, but when we told the hostess that we'd like to get take out, we were seated right away. The service was fantastic. We had the bartender and waitress checking in on us. We tried the soft shell crab and kobiyah (a local fish) which were superb. I don't normally like grits, but now I know what they are supposed to taste like! We also tried the key lime pie which has a Nilla wafer crust. Can you say "yummmmeee?" Would definitely recommend this place. It's a little pricey, but totally worth it!

Our party of 6 stopped here on a Friday night. Arriving about 5:45 - we waited about 20-25 minutes for a booth. Ultimately, everything was extremely well cooked and flavorful. I would recommend this restaurant heartily. We had three appetizers. My favorite was the chicken wings, second choice was the spinach dip, and third was the philly cheesesteak eggrolls. All three were excellent. All our entrees were hot and flavorful as well. I had the scallops, but others had the ribs, fried chicken salad, steak, and shrimp with angel hair pasta. All were fantastic as well - but I would probably choose the shrimp the next time out. No complaints at all. We had each of the desserts around the table. The strawberry shortcake was probably the best if you don't want too much sugar. The Key Lime is legendary for good reason. The Apple crisp was superb - probably my favorite. The staff was attentive and friendly, constantly refilling drinks and clearing the table. I wish I were local so I could frequent this restaurant more often. You won't be disappointed.

I'll keep this short: this place is a real diamond in the rough. It is small and tucked away, and from the outside looks like a typical burger joint. But, man, is it good! The cheesesteak eggrolls are a great idea for an appetizer, and they taste even better than they sound. One member of my party said that the shrimp and angel hair pasta was among the best pasta dishes she's ever had. And the homemade key lime pie is terrific. No trip to the Outer Banks is complete without a meal at the Kill Devil Grill!

Super cute, fast and friendly seating and service, and great food and beer. This was our first time, and we had a party of 8 on a Saturday night, and only waited about 10 minutes for a table. While we waited, the kids played a game out front where some kind customer standing outside paid them $5 cash for each time they successfully, so they won $10 before we got our table! The white pizza with basil and cherry tomatoes was delish, and the Fat Tire ... Well, you can't go wrong with that! The key lime pie is huge and superb--definitely save room!

It's difficult to add a lot to the previous reviews. This is probably my family's favorite restaurant, in any place, at any price point. We've been here about 6 times in the past few years, during Spring Break week when it's not too busy. We've never been disappointed with a dish. The fried chicken (and the fried chicken salad) are lucious, the meatloaf is like nothing _my_ mother ever made, the pork chops prove that pork chops don't have to be tasteless, dry hunks of generic "white meat", and their grilled fish (we've had waho and mahi-mahi) is uniformly excellent. Portions are large, but not crazy huge. Because the food is so good, we end up eating everything and don't leave room for dessert, but we have taken them home. The key lime pie is tart, rich, and gut-busting. Service is uniformly excellent, and the ambiance is just right. This is an example of how everything can just come together so well for a restaurant that has a vision and is well-managed.

Pros: yummy southern fried ckn salad, all fresh ingredients, hubs had a tasty fish o day sandwich. Key lime pie is everything the other reviews say, smooth, tart, satisfying! Kitchen was visible and added to the aesthetic. Cons: loud, crowded, small booths, no leg room (we r tall people), overstimulating environment. It's hard to rate because if noise and chaos don't bother u it's totally worth going to!

My favorite spot for wings. The seafood is excellent as well...nice place.

  • Dan L.

This place is the best food in the Outer Banks - bar none. I don't even know where to start.... The wings (cold smoked, marinated in butter milk, char grilled, and sauced) are a bold twist on an old throwback. The KDG salad has an amazing dressing - and don't fret over the cost - it's good for 2. Always check the specials board for great seafood. Recently, the Mahi, Wahoo, and Cobia have all been excellent - along with the Soft Shell Crabs. To tell you the truth - one of the best meals I've ever had at KDG was the pork chops with basil mashers and homemade applesauce. And for dessert... my goodness. Try the strawberry shortcake, apple crumb, or key lime pie. All are to die for. This place is an institution in the making. Do not miss it. And get there early - or you'll be waiting a LONG WHILE for a seat. Enjoy!

I was honestly surprised by this one. No more than a milepost away from our house lies this little gem of a restaurant. Recommended to us by several of our wedding vendors, we were skeptical of how good this place really is. From a self-proclaimed lover of food: this place is fabulous. Great food and great service - they really care about what they're doing. I can't wait to go back, and then back again, and back again... Thanks KDG, you rock!

Last year we drove by KDG and wondered what that place was like. Looked it up on yelp and found it highly rated. So we planned on what day to visit the OBX based on when KDG was open. Went today and they were packed, a good sign. I got the chicken piccata on angel hair pasta, definitely one of the best pasta dishes i have had in a long time..just about licked my plate clean. My Wife has the rotisserie chicken and said it was very tasty and moist. My Son had a half rack of ribs. so tender that when he went to pick it up the bones came out clean. He was very satisfied. My Dad had the BBQ shrimp on grits and said they were the best he had in a very long time. I must fo dinner in the OBX!

Good service, good food....but a little noisy. I had their Wood Roasted Chicken, which is "while it lasts" - so get there early if you're ready for the best, mouth-watering chicken you've ever had in your life. Full of smoky flavor and served on a bed of their smashed potatoes, I was glad I didn't miss out! Also, they don't over-buy when it comes to their specials either...several went off of the special board while we were there. I'd definitely say they're adventurous with their menu...and they did it really well!

While vacationing in the Outer Banks, NC, my fiance and I wanted to go out to dinner towards the end of our trip to celebrate. We decided to try Kill Devil Grill based on the numerous positive reviews on Yelp. What a good decision it was! The place looks like a diner from the outside and on the inside it has that retro diner feel too. Their menu is simple comfort food that is very well made. We started out with the Cheese Steak Egg-rolls, which were great. Crispy outside and gooey cheesy steak inside! I had the Wood Roasted Chicken which was delicious. The mashed potatoes were fantastic as well. My fiance had the Big Kahuna Burger, which I tasted and was really good. The fries were awesome too. For dessert I had the strawberry shortcake which was great. It was nice and light. Overall this place is great and the prices are right on. We will be back next time!!!

Another great night out at KDG. As always, the food( I had the grilled chicken & pasta, Dr. J had the pork chop), the service and the fabulous Key Lime Pie were outstanding. Had a New Belgium Somersault that was very refreshing and on special. Speaking of which, check their big board out for daily food and drink specials. Thumbs up for locals, weekly's and tourists alike.

Great place and food friendly staff. Ordered the special wahoo fish sandwich. They were out of it and ended up with flounder. Still great food. Will go back before we leave.

Coming from two OBX locals, this is our favorite place to eat on the Outer Banks. Appearing to be a diner from the outside, the casual atmosphere of the restaurant doesn't match up to the elegant and well executed food they serve. My boyfriend states, "They have the best wings ever made by man and they never touch a frier." The wings are grilled and are AMAZING. But I have a hard time comparing them with the Philly cheese steak egg rolls that simply rock our world every time we visit. Seriously. Get the egg rolls. Between the two of us we've tried close to everything on the menu, including many of the specials listed on the Blue Board which change on a daily basis depending on the fresh/local seafood available in our area. KDG is part of the OBX Catch- an organization the promotes serving local seafood in restaurants in the Outer Banks. Some of our favorite entrees excluding the wings and eggrolls are: The crab cakes- oh so good! Pork chop Wood roasted chicken Crab stuffed flounder- only when it's in season. Any of the salads are amazing- and huge so you can share them and eat two appetizers too. If you're the type of tourists that asks where all the locals are eating, this is the place to go. Busy even in the winter- get there early or expect to wait for a table... but if you do wait, rest assured that it will be one of the best meals you will have while you're in town.

We just came back from our OBX vacation and had lunch here twice. I had their southern fired chicken salad which was amazing! I cannot remember the last time I had a fried chicken salad this good. It had corn, mixed greens, tomatoes, and bacon all mixed up with buttermilk dressing topped with fried chicken meat that was still warm. What was great about the salad was that the chicken was white meat but was exceptionally tender and not dry, a hard thing to master for many places. My 14 year old son had a cheeseburger with excellent and fresh ingredients and great fries. Kids Meal: My daughter had a kids meal of fried shrimp and fries. There were 3 large shrimp that were fresh and tasty, it took her 3 bites to eat one so a decent size. The kids meals are $6.99 and include a drink and ice cream if they eat everything off their plate. The nice option for kids was that they also had fried fish (most places just have regular mac and cheese, hot dog or cheeseburger). The service was great and the entire experience was fun. Some of their blue plate specials included wahoo and mahi mahi. They also have a great brunch on Sunday morning. Definitely a great restaurant option with a small and cozy dining room . They do sometimes have a problem with parking for dinner so call ahead and ask. Go check them out while you are on vacation, you won't be dissapointed.

This was a wonderful experience. We had lunch here today and will absolutely be going back. First of all, the waitstaff was great. The waiter we had went above and beyond just doing his job. The food was great. My DH ordered the Royal cheeseburger and it was very good. Cooked perfectly and a very thick hamburger patty. I ordered one of the specials today which was the lobster roll with a small salad. $13 for lunch is a little pricy but it was fresh lobster and you can absolutely taste it. To me that was a very good price for getting anything lobster. It was kind of like a lobster salad on a roll but to me it was great because the lobster was the prominent flavor. Most salads that you get like that taste more like the other ingredients than the main one. The side salad was fresh mixed green lettuce with cucumbers and tomatoes. All their dressings are homemade and the mustard vinaigrette was a great non-over powering flavor. It is a small place with not a lot of seating. It was around 1:30pm or so when we were there and it was fairly full but we did not have to wait. I did see that some reviews complained about not getting seated but I can assure you that those are the places that you want to eat. Sometimes you have to wait for good food and good service.

Kill Devil Grill is consistently the best food on the OBX. Most places at the beach settle for frozen/boxed/canned food for most of their dishes. Clearly not KDG. I would stack their cuisine up against big city restaurants. One little clue their food is fresh: they run out of many of their popular dishes. As the night goes one, items on their chalkboard menu get crossed off as they run out. I was able to get one of the last servings of blackened swordfish recently enjoyed it. And dessert? Unlike most other places on the OBX their key lime pie is the real deal, made from scratch (even the crust). It's excellent. Go to KDG - best on the OBX bar none!

Don't let the outside of this restaurant fool you. My wife ran in to check the inside out before we parked. The parking lot is small and can be difficult to find a parking spot. We had a large party (8 adults & 2 toddlers). At 2pm on a Friday afternoon this place was busy. The food was absolutely worth the 30 min wait. The menu and the specials (5-6 specials) included lot's of seafood. The specials go quick and they mark what's sold out on the large chalk board. We started with the beer can shrimp with old bay seasoning. It was delicious! A bit pricey @ $10 for half pound. We also ordered the Crab Cake Sandwich, Bison Burger (one of the specials) and pulled pork sandwich. The Crab Cake was the best I have ever had. All crab meat, couldn't find any filler and the fries were superb. My wife loved her Pulled Pork Sandwich. We also ordered the Key Lime Pie and the Apple Cobbler. The Key Lime Pie was good but not the best I have had. I didn't try the Apple Cobbler but my brother-in-law said it was good. Overall, this place is great and I would highly recommend it. The prices are on point for the quality of food you get. The service was good but could have easily been great! Not too many smiling faces!

Parking lot is small so you might have to walk and you will have to wait. That's not that big a deal though. I don't mind waiting for a table. What I do mind is waiting 15 minutes to get a drink order, 30 minutes on food (hamburger), 20 minutes on dessert, 20 minutes to get check. It took us over 2 hours AFTER we were seated. Hamburger and key lime pie were good but not THAT good. By the way we never got refills or anything (waiter was shooting the breeze with the bartender). Skip this one and go somewhere else.

Kill Devil Grill is one of the best on the beach. Their brunch on Sunday is AMAZING! For lunch the BBQ salad is awesome and the philly cheesesteak egg rolls are a MUST. We highly recommend!

You MUST eat here if visiting the area. Get the fish of the day. The peal and eat shrimp are steamed in PBR beer and they give you the rest of the beer not used as a condiment. Their food is made from scratch. Friendly people. Simple, fresh menu with lots of personality.

By far the best restaurant we ate at in the Outer Banks. It was so good, we came back a second night to eat there again. Overall I was able to order or sample the cheesesteak egg rolls (as good as advertised) the wahoo (fantastically fresh and so very delicious) the fried chicken salad (incredible, and somehow had dressing on every bite), the filet mignon (one of the top 5 steaks I've ever tasted, and the fried shrimp (fresh and delicious). To end the meal, the key lime pie was just as good as advertised. The service was fantastic, and we got our food very quickly. If you eat at one place in the Outer Banks, make it this one.

Our first visit was 4 years ago. The food was great, service too. Its a small place but with an 18 month old I am fussy about what we eat and I could not complain about the ingredients. This visit we never made it :(, they ar not open sundays, of course I assumed they were open for breakfast never made it for a third try because we were all the way out on duck and hated to leave a 2 mile radius due to the traffic on duck! Actually want to stay in Kill Devil Hills next time just to be close to KDG!

Wow! That's what I have to say about the food here. I live in Atlanta and don't have high expectations about food when I'm on vacation, but this place was outstanding. The dishes seemed like something in a high-end modern American restaurant. I had an 8oz sirloin with these spicy mashed potatoes and a vegetable mix. The steak was cooked perfect, the potatoes were full of flavor, and I found myself eating vegetables that I usually don't (squash, zuchinni). My wife had a chicken dinner dish that had her picking the very last pieces off the bone. To top it off, the dinner dishes were only $12 and $15. This place isn't a secret either, there was a slight wait on a Tuesday night. This place is not without its quirks though: 1) This jerk pulled in behind me while I was waiting for a spot, his wife ran in to get on the list in front of us, then he proceeded to block my truck in. While the dude was drinking a martini inside, I had to navigate my truck out of this difficult parking area. 2) The inside is just odd, its half a converted diner, but with three booths that I'd call "nice". 3) They handed me the bill in one of these black AMERICAN EXPRESS card holders. I put my AMERICAN EXPRESS card in there, and they proceed to tell me they don't take it. WTF is that all about? Its 1% more than Visa people, pay the thirty cents and move on. Overall, this place is a great find and a great value as long as they keep that chef.

Great food, great service at a restaurant by the sea! Well, close to it at least. It was our last night at OBX so I wanted to ensure this meal would be a good one (this was our first visit to OBX). I scoured all of the different sites and Kill Devil Grill received ALOT of good reviews so I figured why not!? So glad we were not let down and the hype was spot on. We arrived around 6pm and already they were packed, but it took us only about 15 minutes to be seated. The service was excellent - they were great with the kids and had a kids menu. We had the spinach dip to start with in the interest of getting something everyone would eat. It was creamy goodness. My husband ordered the special fish - which was was a grilled cobia with a house made salsa and I had the crabcakes with fries and slaw. Let's just say we were moaning audibly with each bite! So tasty! The crabcakes were the prefect crisp on the outside and outrageous soft and yummy on the inside. The salsa on the cobia had blackened shrimp which complemented the cobia so very well. We didn't have room for dessert and ended up walking across the street to walk along to beach to burn some of it off. The sun was setting, the kids were laughing, our bellies were happy - perfect last night at OBX.

They advertise carry-out service on their website. I called for carry-out and was told "uhhh we can't do that right now". It would be fine if they didn't have 'dine in/carry-out' right on their website. Very disappointed.

The Kill Devil Grill is a gem in the central beach area. During our wait for a table we played a simple, yet addictive, game that consisted of throwing a ring onto a hook. It made the 20 minutes pass in no time. The decor is clean and simple. The staff was super friendly and provided top notch service. We started with a half pound of the steamed shrimp - several large shrimp served hot, wonderfully spiced and cooked to perfection. The remaining PBR not used for steaming was served cold in the can along side the shrimp, much to my husband's delight and amusement. I tried a blackened rockfish special served with avocado salsa and cheesy grits - very tasty. My husband and son both had the ribs and ate every bit, happily. The kids meal options were typical but yummy. We couldn't resist the key lime pie for dessert and were not disappointed! It was deliciously creamy, sweet and tart, and there was plenty to share. This was our second visit to the Kill Devil Grill and it's now on our list of can't miss places to eat when we visit the Outer Banks.

We went here for dinner last night. After a short wait we were seated. The decor is great the front part of the restaurant is a Pullman coach and the back part of the restaurant is somewhat retro. I ordered the wood grilled chicken my wife ordered the Philly cheese rolls. My oldest daughter ordered the fried shrimp and each of my other two daughters ordered the wings and bruschetta. The only dish that was almost inedible were the wings. My daughter had ordered them naked with the sauce on the side and 6 out of the 8 wings came out with the skin burnt to a blackened crisp. When I asked the waitress who delivered the wings about this she said that they grilled their wings and that is how they came out. Believe me I have grilled chicken and wings many times and I would have defined them as burnt and would have refused to serve them. My daughter scraped them and ate what was left. I asked our main waitress the same question and her answer was similar but she did offer to have the burnt ones replaced. This was a nice gesture. Since we were half way through our dinner my daughter opted to just finish her meal. Dessert was spectacular my daughters had the apple crisp which they could not stop raving about. My wife had the Key lime pie which she said was good and I had the strawberry shortcake which also was spectacular. I would recommend this restaurant but I would warn everyone to stay away from the burnt wings. I observed other wings going to other tables and they too were burnt.

This is an amazing place. There are a lot of places to eat in the Outer Banks but this place has it all. Awesome food and service. I had the Bison burger and my wife had the Red Cuban and both were amazing. Our servers were also amazing. Very attentive. Thank you Kill Devil Grill for the great experience.

  • Kristin C.

To be honest, I was expecting some pretty fantasic food here based on the other reviews. As a vegetarian though, this place is LACKING in variety. The only items on the whole menu that I could eat were three appetizers. No one wants to be limited to eating only appetizers at dinner time while everyone else is enjoying an entree. The quality of the white pizza was good, but it should be great if that is one of three items I can eat.

  • Daniel K.

Great Food at a great price, small place so be prepared for parking / wait issues if you go during prime time but man is it worth it, and those deserts are just killer, SAVE ROOM, wow. 100% worth it. GREAT Place.

  • Lori O.

Excellent food and service. I had the special, a jumbo crabcake over arugula, with a parmesan dressing. Others in my party had the PBR shrimp and grilled salmon salad. Jenny was a spectacular server. The key lime pie is as beautiful as it is tasty. Prices are reasonable. Why did I take off a star? Because they were out of the first two menu choices of one of my companions... Right before noon, I might add. Otherwise, it's a great spot!

Went for dinner food was great. Ordered the specials. Salmon and BBQ chicken and ribs. We ordered dessert, key lime pie and apple crisp. Both were awesome, could have ordered one to split. Great place to get a good meal. Prices seem average for location.

  • Julian S.

If you don't eat here, you're stupid. Seriously. I had the salmon salad, but with a soft-shelled crab instead. It was amazing. The service was fantastic and the server actually recommended some other places that were amazing.

  • Christina M.

This place was amazing. I ordered a tuna medium rare, cooked to perfection. My boyfriend ordered soft shell crab also perfected to a T. Both specials over cheese grits, one with a black bean salsa and the other w/ a avocado salsa, respectively. The drinks were served promptly during our brief wait (shorter than expected!) and the key lime pie was a MUST. If we come back, this will be a definite destination.

Simply put, GREAT. First, stopped in for lunch. I had a fish sandwich - turned out to be FRESH albacore tuna. Normally, I dislike tuna - but this was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We returned for dinner the next night - wife and I split a Cowboy Steak - lovely sear - and cooked just as we ordered. With all the tourist traps, do yourself a favor - eat here!

Best dining on the Outer Banks. We locals are a little sorry that we let everyone know since it is crowded now! You cannot go wrong. Every meal is a delight and their desserts are amazing, especially the apple crisp. Looks like a diner and tastes like a 4 star restaurant!

Seriously, BEST food in the area! We went to the beach for a vacation and was so disappointed with the food everywhere we went. EXCEPT at this place! I had the cuban sandwich at the recommendation of the waitress and it did not disappoint. We're talking fresh pulled pork and the most amazing sauce to go with it! Hubs had a crab cake sandwich that he said was really good, but not quite amazing. Bro had a cheeseburger with the same result. We then ordered Key Lime Pie and was astonished by the hugeness of 1 slice! But, it was excellent so it wasn't hard to finish! Overall, great food. This is a really laid back and relaxed kind of joint. If you are looking for over priced food in a fancy restaurant, go somewhere else. But if you want to talk to some locals and get some great authentic flavors, come here. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is for the lack of wow factor in the cheeseburger and crabcake sandwich. BUT, it was still better than everywhere else in the area!

Great appetizers! Chicken wings were grilled and had great flavor! The grilled tuna was wonderful but the crab cakes could have been a little better. The waitress said to try the crab cakes only if you weren't from Maryland because they were prepared differently however they were still jumbo lump with little filler. We wanted to try the desserts but they were sold out! They are made fresh every day and I guess were gone. Don't let the diner motif fool you! This grill is far better and would definitely dine there again:)

I am pretty surprised about how highly rated this place is. Yes, the fried chicken is outstanding, but much of the rest is just regular. Service is OK at times. Restaurant is kind of small and specials run out really fast. I'd recommend checking this place out atleast once.

  • Greg C.

Just had one of the best meals ever. The grilled Wahoo over redskin mashed was awesome. My wife's NY strip was tender and grilled to perfection. Make sure you save room for the Key Lime pie and a cup of coffee. I thought $70 including tip for 2 dinners, a spinach dip appetizer, 3 beers, and a piece of pie was very reasonable. I've paid more for much worse, even in Columbus.

  • Mary K.

One of our favorite restaurants ever! The food is superb. Casual setting. Superior wait staff. Worth the long wait for a table, but be prepared to wait. Try the bruschetta for an appetizer. Great entree salads: Salmon Salad, or ask for the Seazar Salad with a Crab Cake on top. Chicken and Steaks are great. Everything is cooked perfectly. They have a great kid's menu. If you don't want your child to have fries on the side, ask for the home made applesauce instead. You must have the Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. Call after 4:00 to ask about the specials - but beware - they sell out.

This is the kind of place that makes Southern coastal cooking such a great experience. I had soft-shell crab over cheese grits and andouille gumbo. Incredible. We paired it with a good bottle of Chardonnay for $18 (Wed is half price bottle day). My wife had sea bass with smoked avacado / shrimp. It was great. Even us picky New Yorkers were impressed and can't wait to return.

Ate here over the summer (5 months ago) but I can still remember how wonderful this place was! The menu is seasonal and is written on chalkboards that are seen all around the dining room. I ordered the salmon salad and it was the best salmon salad that I've ever had. The salmon was grilled and warm, and the salad had corn and had a dressing that was loaded with garlic. Simply delicious!

  • Carmen C.

Okay, YUM! It doesn't look like much, with the sliver trailer and miniature parking lot, but once inside, you'll find out why it's packed full. The food specials vary, but feature fresh local seafood (the DH enjoyed his tuna sandwich) and other great entrees (the grilled chicken over angel hair was my favorite dish of the trip.) Crowded, but good service, and worth the wait.

After a 20 minute wait at the bar for dinner we sat in the small seating area. There was a limited menu, but we got a burger and chicken sandwich, so not a big issue for us. The food was great and friendly staff. Open kitchen style added to the noise of the place. Has potential to be a hot spot if it could get a better X factor.

WOW. Kill Devil Grill is the best place I have eaten in a loooooong time. The food was to die for - fresh ingredients with tons of flavor, and the service was impeccable. We had the philly cheese steak egg rolls (heavenly), the soft shell crabs over cheese grits and black bean salsa, and the fried shrimp - best I have ever had. Even the cole slaw was amazing, and I don't even like cole slaw! But this stuff was Good. I can't say enough - you must check it out!

Wonderful!!!! Great lunch specials, My wife's tuna was tasty, the noodle cake it was served on was a savory delight, My crab cake w/ arugula was scrumptious with tomato concasse and a lemony vinaigrette. It redeemed the trip and made me forget about the other horrible cuisine I had in Nags Head.

Went on a week night and had the Blue Plate special - mama's meatloaf and mashies with a big side salad and fresh dijon vinegrette dressing for $11.99. Food was excellent - our only complaint was that the meatloaf and gravy were unbelievably salty. Had to split a key lime pie for dessert - since it is world renowned - it was sweet and fresh. When my relatives heard we had meatloaf while vacationing on the Outer Banks they thought we were crazy... but I guess we went here for the diner experience!

BBQ chicken salad was one of the most flavorful salads I've ever had. Strawberry shortcake was perfect. The kitchen was very accommodating to our party. The waitress was super friendly and helpful. Reasonably priced and absolutely worth the wait.

We did our research and found the highly rated Kill Devil Grill. We stopped for lunch and the place was full, but it only took a ten minute wait to get a table. They have several craft beers on draft, including Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA and Sierra Nevada Summerfest. The Kids menu had some great items, we chose a Cheeseburger for our little one, it came with milk and ice cream for only $6! They have several specials on the big chalkboard everyday and they line them out when the item sells out. I tried the Swordfish sandwich and my wife had the pulled pork sandwich. They both came with delicious, crispy fries! The desserts are all made in house. We tried the much raved about Key Lime Pie, it was wonderful! I would definitely stop at this place on your Outer Banks vacation!

Fantastic! The Bison burger is delicious, the grilled fish was cooked to perfection and served over awesome cheddar grits and a sweet corn relish. We also had a soft shell crab sandwich that was wonderful and some not to be missed apps too - smoked hot wings and Philly cheese steak egg rolls! Plus a hot dog fries and Sunday for my 3 year old nephew. All top notch !!!!

We went here because of all the great reviews and were not disappointed. Had lunch, had to wait a bit even though a little off season. Started with the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls, crabcake sandwich and finished with key lime pie. All five stars nad will make this a regular stop on future trips to outer banks.

We debated 4 vs 5 stars. It was close but you can't give 4.5 stars. Anyway we have a friend who has lived here for 25+ years. they recomended it. So a reference from a local should tell you something positive about this place. Food - very good - four stars. Service and friendly staff five stars.

This place was fantastic. Especially after having such an awful experience at The Sunset Grill. The food was amazing and the service was top-flight. My pulled pork sandwich was great. The chicken wings were amazing. The crab cake sandwich my wife had was great. My in-laws live in the area and the KDG is their favorite. Next time I'm in the OBX, I'm headed to the Kill Devil Grill.

A great little burger joint in the Outer Banks. The front is like an old fashioned diner. I had the turkey burger with avacado salsa and Monterrey jack cheese and it was amazing. The only downside is that the menu is a little limited, but they have several specials up on the chalk board. Definitely worth visiting this cozy little place!

What a nice find. Friendly service, and woderful food. I had the soft shell crabs, being from the DC area have to give credit to the great chef at kill devils. They had three of the most plump and succulent crabs I'd ever eaten. Severved over grits with a tasso gravy which was perfectly seasoned and complemented nicely the slightly spicey bread coating that encrusted these crusteacen. Too bad it's short a short season but lucky are those who can get them before they're gone. Also had a key lime pie for dessert which was large enough to have shared with three people till suddenly no ones talking and you find this large slice of pie had suddenly been eaten then you look at each other and politely turn to your server and say " more pie plead"which I did, and orders another piece was also top rate and very tart, tangy, and wonderful. Prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the food as well as the generous portions served. Giving it four stars since I had only been their once but it will rise to five if my future visits are as well received.

We ate here over the 4th of july holidays. This restaurant is listed as one of the best in Our State Magazine, and I agree!!!!The wait was a little long(go early) but the wait was worth it. Our food was wonderful. Our service was perfect. I just wish I had visited this place earlier in the week, so I could return for more!!!

Excellent, prompt service. Inspired specials clearly cooked by a chef rather than a short-order cook. Phenomenal homemade desserts served in very share-able portions. Highly recommended.

It was our first time in the Outer Banks and we asked several people where to go. Everyone said The Kill Devil Grill! Well they were right!! When we first got there I thought to myself (looks like a dive, but dives could be great) Turns out its a classic diner with an added on dining room and kitchen. The original diner part is now the full service bar. While waiting for our table,(approx 40 mins for a Sat night on a holiday weekend) the aroma from the kitchen was amazing! We talked to a few people waiting who stated it was there favorite place in OBX. As for what we finally had.. The cocktails were fine nothing out of the norm. We had the mussels for an appetizer. We were told that we got the last order. They were in a tasty tomato broth, my only complaint, not enough bread for dipping! For Dinner I had the crab cakes (on regular menu) "All lump crab no filler" as they say! My friend got the Shrimp over angel hair pasta and loved it. We are sorry to say that we were too full to enjoy the desserts. But they looked delish! I guess next time I'll save some room for dessert!

We have been eating at the KDG for the past three years and have never been disappointed. They have a great, casual atmosphere, friendly service and of course the food is great. The fish is always fresh and cooked perfectly. The grilled salmon salad is excellent, and there is a nice diversity of fresh catch each day. The mashed potatoes and fries are great as well. But be sure to save room for desert - the key lime pie, strawberry shortcake and chocolate cake are all some of the best you will have. There are also some nice beers on tap, including Starr Hill from C-Ville, VA.

I went there with a party of two for lunch and when we walked in there were three booths open right beside us. We were told that we couldn't sit there because they were reserving them for larger parties (I'm assuming 3 or 4 people). And then we were told that there were no other tables available, so we'd have to put our names on the list and wait. So, we did... and we waited for 15 minutes, while another 2 top came in and wasn't seated either. No larger parties arrived, and they just expected us to stand there when we could have been halfway (or at least partially) through our meal, and stare at three open tables. I could understand if there was only one 4-person table left. But three? No thanks. I should also mention that the hostess was incredibly rude to us - even more-so when we asked to have our names removed from her list when we decided to leave and try another restaurant. Ridiculous.

Anytime I'm in the obx, I try to come here. It's always been very good. Went here on my vacation last week for an early lunch, and I was little disappointed. They seated my party by a dripping AC with a caution-do not slip sign. Granted...this place is small so they cannot afford to lose seating space. I was however a bit shocked they at least didn't note it or explain the why behind it. Service was pretty good. I ordered the fried chicken salad with garlic based dressing. The chicken was a little dry. One of my friends ordered the salmon salad and loved it...the portion size for the salad was very filling. My other friend indulged in the pork bbq sandwich and liked it. The sauce they serve with it is a sweet vinegar based one, i know b/c i put it on my dry chicken. :) I frequent the obx only once or twice a year that it won't be in my rotation again for awhile, but I'll go back eventually.

Arrived and there was a wait. We left in search of somewhere we could be sat right away. Ended up returning, and so glad we did. There is only one word to describe our experience, AMAZING. the food and the service were top notch. The crab cakes were all crab and no cake. The ribeye was cooked to perfection with a great charbroiled flavor. The other reviewers are all correct, the apple crisp was fantastic. A dinner at Kill Devil Grill will be added to every future trip to the Outer Banks.

I don't care where on the obx you are staying, come here for a meal and you will not be disappointed! The line gets long for the dining room but the service at the bar is very good and attentive. Love the salads...eveything is so fresh!

Outstanding! The crab cakes are the best I've had. Full of crab and no filler. We also had fried fish sandwich which was made with a fresh tuna steak fabulous. Get the wings for an appetizer they are smoky and have a good kick to them. You will fave a wait because the locals frequent this place but once seated the service is FAST and friendly. Don't skip this place it's worth the wait. Best meal in OBX. Oh and the ket lime pie is to die for!

My fiance, her family and I were in town recently to check out some of our wedding plans for the following summer. We have been coming down to the OBX for the past few summers and love it there. Her parents recommended this place and I was so glad they did. There aren't that many good diner type food places on the OBX but this place would be amazing in any town including mine. The service and atmosphere is great and friendly. The menu is just right and offers alot of choices but not overwhelming. They have a great beer & wine selection that had us tasting all different wines. And lastly the prices were great. One of the stand outs for me was this tuna melt special. They took a grilled tuna steak, flaked it with some dressing, celery and onions and placed it on a baguette slice that was then covered with 3 cheeses and a tomato. Tell me where in NYC you get a tuna melt like that? nowhere. If you are down there for even a day you have to check this place out. I will be back there next summer most likely every day.

We have been to OBX several times and this was the first time at KDG. Wow! This place is awesome, food was great and service beyond any we've ever had. Never had an empty glass and dishes cleared away fast. Definitely will go again next year.

Great food! the place is a little small so the servers are jonnie on the spot when you take your last bite, felt a little rushed. Food however was delicious, Chicken and Pasta with vegetable! Wings are very HOT, steak and cheese eggrolls are good!

This place is awesome. Great atmosphere, excellent food, and reasonably priced. It looks like a diner, but they don't have classic diner food and the people that cook your food are chefs (or at least dress the part in white chef outfits and hats). We went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and had the fish sandwich and big kahuna burger - I would recommend either of these. It was quite busy, but the service was still good and we didnt have to wait. Unfortunately we didn't have dessert or a milkshake, but they looked/sounded delicious. Only complaints (minor): the juke boxes on the table are not functional and we didn't get to sit in the train car section of the restaurant. This is one of the best places you will find in this section of the outer banks and you should def go during your next trip. Also, seems very family friendly.

Completely not what we expected. We thought it was going to be a little dive diner with OK food. It was a little dive diner with great food! The wings were fantastic, a definite must try, and the ribs were fantastic. All of the meals our group had were amazing, I will definitely stop by here again if I am in the area.

One can only eat so much seafood. Well, maybe that's not true, but midway through our vacation, I desperately needed some red meat. We had wanted to try Kill Devil Grill for dinner the night before, but it was slammed (in October!) so we passed it by. The crowd for lunch was much more reasonably sized, so in we went. The restaurant itself has a really cool, retro setup: the first thing you see when you enter is an old-fashioned diner-style bar. There's (non-functional) juke boxes on the tables as well. Our waitress was really friendly and listed the multiple specials off the top of her head in great detail. If there's a contest for servers that tests their memory for the menu, she'd win it hands-down. Everything, from shrimp and grits to a grilled swordfish sandwich, sounded excellent, but I sheepishly ordered a burger, feeling pretty boorish in the process. Who orders a burger at the beach? Well, apparently a lot of people do, because it was a damned good burger. Juicy, cooked just right, flavorful... this was the best burger I'd eaten in a while, folks. It's a good thing that KDG isn't in Charlotte, or I'd weigh 500 pounds due to eating a burger for every meal. I don't say this lightly: Kill Devil Grill is a must-visit spot. Get a burger!

We stopped in for a quick dinner at the Kill Devil Grill on our last night in oBX and were not disappointed. We were looking for something casual but good and this fit the bill perfectly. it was crowded, but we were seated right away and the service was prompt and efficient. They had a surprisingly nice selection of wines which were reasonably priced. The had a number of fresh seafood specials but we were tired of seafood by this point and were looking for something else. My DH had the Big Kahuna burger which looked absolutely delicious. It wasn't too big and was served on a nice sesame seed bun and piled with bacon and cheese. I didn't get to sample the burger, but he enjoyed every bite of it. i did get to try a couple of the fries that came with it and they were crisp and tasty I had the fried chicken salad and it was very good. I subbed their vinegrette dressing for the buttermilk dressing that it comes with and was happy with my choice. I requested the dressing on the side as I always do to avoid overly dressed salads, but it came out already dressed. Luckily it had the right amount of dressing so I didn't complain about the error. The chicken on the salad was perfectly cooked. Tender and juicy while still nice and crispy. The portion sizes were about right, not ridiculously large but enough to fill you up. Dinner for 2 including a beer and a glass of wine was $25, so no complaints here at all!

Was told to check this place out because it's where all the locals go. I wish we didn't drive past it all these years! We were told to try the fish specials and boy they did not disappoint!!! The crab cakes were better than my mom's (shh... Don't tell her!) and don't leave without ordering the key lime pie! Service is exceptional!

I've been here three times now spread over two separate trips to the Outer Banks many months apart and the food has consistently been nothing short of amazing! The service has been hit or miss.....mostly good but the last time we went it was apparently close to closing so it felt like they were trying to rush us out (although we still took our time eating lol...). However, we were so absorbed in our food we didn't even have time to notice! Anything with fish or crab in it and you can't go wrong. If you don't like seafood or don't eat meat then the menu choices are very limited, but come on now you're at the beach! Of course most places are seafood places! That's a no brainer... Aside from the entrees, the desserts were in a class all by themselves. I had the strawberry shortcake and shared it with friends and not a crumb was left =). You will definitely not be disappointed at all with the food if you go here...although try to come early on in the evening because some of their specials had run out when we got there a little later on in the evening.

Fantastic little restaurant in the OBX! I hope to visit here again the next visit we have to the OBX. Service was friendly. Food was delicious. They were nice to our kids! I can't complain! My husband ordered steak and cheese eggroll things that both him and they kids loved. I ordered the filet special and my husband ordered the fish special. Lots of good options for the little ones on the kids menu as well! The chocolate peacan pie is just heavenly!!

We love this place! We go each time we visit OBX and each time we are so glad we did! The staff are so nice and right at home....they make you feel at home too! I'd highly recommend the crab cakes but all their selections are outstanding. Even down to the spaghetti! Try the specials too...they are always unique and fresh. Love it!!!

My extended family and I recently ate at KDG a couple of weeks ago during our trip to Nags Head. I consider myself a foodie and maybe a little bit of a food snob, so I did a lot of research before our trip. I saw a number of promising restaurants and KDG was one of them. They had a really fun swinging ring game out front that the kids loved playing with and kept everyone entertained who had to wait for a table. The restaurant looks a little unassuming outside, so I didn't know what the expect inside. The food was outstanding from the cheesesteak eggrolls to the fried chicken salad to the pork chop. Highly recommended and you won't regret your decision.

I ate here with my wife and daughters and was definitely not impressed. I will not be back. They didn't even have crackers! Not that I count crackers as the benchmark of quality, but they certainly help keep hungry little kids calm while they wait on their food. This place is a barrel of confusion, it can't decide if it's a diner or a nice restaurant. So, it gives you a diner atmosphere with expensive prices.

Serious diamond in the rough! Doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside is cozy & retro, just like a diner should be. Food-wise, I was expecting average at best casual fare but was pleasantly surprised by a gourmet take on beach dining. We sampled: White pizza Cheesesteak egg rolls Wings Caesar salad Bacon cheeseburger Crabcakes Snapper sandwich All of it was great, but the apps stood out the most for me. Wings came with a spicy dry rub and fancy ranch-esque sauce. Cheesesteak eggrolls were fat kid fantasy level and made this philly gal wanna lick the plate. One warning- if ya get the Caesar you'll smell like an anchovy for the next 24 hours. Worth it.

Bottom Line: At this road side diner gourmet cuisine is served by exceptional staff. From the "beach road," Kill Devil Grill might just look like a little diner serving meatloaf and greasy burgers, but the plates here are gourmet and the staff here is top notch. Given the awesome reviews on Yelp I knew I had to check out Kill Devil Grill so my "up for anything" mother and I headed over for a casual lunch. Kill Devil Grill opens their doors at 11:30am (Tuesday through Saturday only, closed Sunday and Monday) and when we arrived about that time there was already a line forming. We were able to get seated soon after the door opened and we were immediately greeted by our friendly waitress. The regular menu is fairly short but I appreciate that because I know Kill Devil Grill is focusing on doing a few things very well. In addition to the regular menu, they also have some "blue plate" specials but these blue plates aren't the blue plates of the 1950s. Rather they are fresh and refined dishes like Grilled Blackened Corvina (fish) over Grits, Fresh Caught Tuna Salad and Quinoa and Tabouli salads. Equally appealing as the dishes' descriptions are their presentation. I ordered the corvina over grits but much to my surprise and my waitress's surprise it was actually served over mashed potatoes. I let the waitress know just so she could keep an eye out as others ordered the dish. She offered to get me a side of grits and I said I was fine with the potatoes as they were tasty. Come to find out, the kitchen was out of grits anyway so a very cute, sincere and apologetic Nicole insisted that the restaurant provide me with a complimentary dessert. So I said I would love a piece of the award winning Key Lime Pie to go and I enjoyed every piece of that (lucky for my father I split it with him and he too said it was delish). Sweeter than the pie was Nicole's dedication to providing excellent customer service. I applaud the management of Kill Devil Hills for hiring and training a refined staff that could wait tables in the fanciest of restaurants.

Went here for lunch one day while I was in the outer banks. I got the cheesesteak egg rolls and the cuban sandwich. The egg rolls were very good, although I probably would serve a garlic aioli or something to dip and not marinara sauce. The cuban sandwich was mediocre, with bits of bone in the pork. My fault for getting that instead of a soft shell crab sandwich, which looked amazing. Debatable whether I would go back.

Kill Devil Grill is an awesome lunch spot if you are in the Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills area. It is located right on Virginia Dare so if you are at one of the public beach accesses, you can easily walk straight off the beach and into the restaurant for lunch. We came on a Saturday right at about noon and the parking lot was completely full. We expected a long wait, but we were pleasantly surprised to only wait about 10-15 minutes. Two pieces of advice: there is a public beach access lot right up the street if the grill's parking lot is full and when you enter the restaurant go down the stairs to the hostess stand to get your name on the list. Hopefully this will save people some time and hassle. Also, as we waited to be seated we played the "hook and ring" game. I don't know exactly what it's called, but the basic premise is you get a ring on a string to get stuck on a hook. Sounds odd, but it's a lot of fun. Once we were seated, we were promptly greeted by our waitress as she immediately took our drink orders. We got two beers and some waters. The beer selection here is not great, but they did have a couple of craft brew selections. The only IPA they had was "Sisters of the Moon" by Mother Earth Brewing, so we went with that. The menu is fairly basic for a grill and everything is reasonably priced. You're looking at right around the $10-$15 range. We were both pretty sure of what we were gonna get. That was until the waitress came back and listed off the specials for the day. Make sure to ask about their specials because there were about 5 and they all sounded amazing. Brief overview: blackened Mahi Mahi with a pineapple salsa, stuffed chicken, and a bison burger with green chills and a queso spread. We decided that we both wanted burgers and to make sure with both got a taste of everything that the Grill had to offer, we each took half of each burger. The two burgers that we decided to order were the Big Kahuna Burger and the Special Bison Burger. The Big Kahuna Burger is always on the lunch menu and it comes with the toppings you would expect and bacon. The Special Bison burger came with a queso spread, pickled onions, green chills, and tortilla strips. After trying both burgers, the bison burger is the one to go with. If they ever have this as the special when you are there, go with it! The Big Kahuna was also very good. The bacon that they put on here is what makes it. Normally I like my bacon crispy, but they did such an awesome job with this thick cut bacon that I wasn't even worried about the lack of crunch. Both of these burgers came with some thick cut steak fries. They were nice and golden crispy with a good seasoning on them. The service here was awesome! Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and seemed really excited about the food. Everyone that works here seems to buy into the restaurant, which is great to see. We even had the bartender come over and ask us about that bison burger. He said he had his fingers crossed that they wouldn't sell out so that he could get his hands on one. The restaurant itself has a really cool, beachy vibe to it as well. The top portion seems like it is a remodeled airstream trailer. This portion has a bar that is about 15 feet long and a couple of tables. There are steps leading down to a larger dining area that has a handful of booths. There is an open kitchen down below. The Kill Devil Grill has awesome beach diner style food. It is a great place to get a good burger and fries. The people that work here are all friendly and seem to enjoy what they do. You can't go wrong with stopping here during your time in OBX.

This is deserving of every five star review it has. And we aren't even done. We started with the peel and eat shrimp which were the best either of us have ever had. I got the half rack of ribs. Heavenly. Hubby had the wahoo with an awesome avocado salsa. They being hot wet towels after the shrimp and ribs to clean your fingers which was a really nice touch. Can't wait to try the key lime pie!!!

Don't let the outside appearance fool you, this place is a culinary delight. The food is prepared and served like a five star high priced restaurant without the pretentiousness. Everything is fresh and prepared like a piece of artwork where only the taste that surpasses the appearance. I've ordered at Kill Devil Grill near closing expecting less of an experience, but I was so wrong. The last meal arrives at the table just like the first one of the day. Don't bother dressing up, the place is casual and friendly like a place on the Outer Banks should be. You'll get your money's worth and then some at Kill Devil Grill and you will definitely not be disappointed.

Exceptional service - I mean better than any restaurant I've ever experienced. Food was wonderful. We took our 4 and 2 year old for lunch. Kids menu was substantial. Mom and Dad enjoyed the soft shell crab sandwich and snapper over grits plate. Soooo good!

My favorite place on the strip. Went there for lunch and had the flash fried crab sandwich special. Excellent. Still thinking about it. Food porn at its finest. My boys raved about the big kahuna burger and claimed the fries put five guys to shame. Looking forward to next year. Cheers.

Found this by way of searching reviews and it did not disappoint! Excellent food and service. I had the flat iron steak and it was tender and so flavorful throughout. My husband had the crab cakes and loved them. Be prepared to wait for a table as they are small and very busy. Worth the wait!

And...the bathrooms are immaculate! BTW, returned for dinner and not disappointed...expect you won't be either. Ordered the Swordfish special and Beer Can Shrimp, and loved it all. Note: Review based upon expectations of a diner. An exceptional cut above your average diner...but still, meals are not dressed to the level of a cafe or restaurant. I don't expect you'll be disappointed...just let them know and they'll fix it. Service is exceptional!

Great food and service. We were accidentally charged double for our meal and the manager took care of it the following week once we noticed it. We were very pleased with how they handled this mistake. They followed up with us multiple times the week after until the charge was corrected. Excellent customer service!!

Came here around 5:00 on a Tuesday evening and there was a 35 min-1 hour wait for our party of 7. They also could not seat the entire party together. I sat at the bar while I waited and ordered a beer. About five minutes later I got the beer. Off to a slightly disorganized start, but the experience definitely improved when we sat and ordered our food. The menu was not very large, but they did have about five specials that change depending on their inventory. I ordered the grilled shrimp with angel hair pasta and red sauce. Holy cannoli. It was amazing. 8 large juicy shrimp on top of angel hair pasta and generously drizzled with red sauce and fresh tomatoes. Incredible. The shrimp was awesome. My sister ordered the goat cheese pizza and it was awesome. My boyfriend ordered the chicken sandwich and loved it as well. For dessert, key lime pie with fresh whipped cream and a fresh strawberry sauce. This was literally the best key lime pie that I have ever had. Tart- like key lime pie should be. The strawberry sauce complimented it so well. The graham cracker crust was awesome too. The food is awesome and so is the service. I plan on coming back before I head back home to the burgh!

Stopped here for Valentine's Day yesterday and they were slammed packed. It was so worth the wait! Our food was delicious. Seriously, this is our new favorite place to eat on the outer banks. We decided to be simple and get two burgers and they were some of the best burgers we've ever had. We also got the apple crisp for dessert and that was hands down the best dessert I've ever had. We will definitely be returning ASAP!

Worth wading through the water from on monsoon night. Our large party handled with finesse on a busy busy night. Waiter was fantastic gave enough detail to know he loved the good as well. Everyone tried something different. I had a fresh Caesar followed by chicken and dumplings. And still couldn't pass up a bite of two different desserts. Truth be told I would go just for the key lime pie. WOw! Don't miss this spot.

We had: 1- chicken wings (order this) 2- PBR steamed shrimp (really good) 3- hanger steak with chimchuri, asparagus and macaroni and cheese (order this-outstanding!!!!) 4-cobia on polenta/grits and avocado salsa (really good) 5- cup of Caribbean bean soup (really good) 6- key lime pie (order this) Everything is fresh, can watch them prep and cook at the front. Prices are good, service is exceptional. They really know how to get the job done and obviously take pride in what they do. Eat here, thank me later.

If you like fried chicken The Kill Devil Grill is where it is at. The fried chicken is only available for consumption on Friday's. Get there early because this joint fills up with the quickness. The servers are very attentive catering to your every culinary need. the dessert menu there is top notch. Prices are very reasonable. This reviewer gives it an A+.

Great service, amazingly fresh & tasty food, and consistent...hands down the best place to eat in the OBX! I have driven from Salvo and Duck to eat here because it is...Just.That.Good! Follow the fellow yelper instructions and arrive just a few minutes before they open, unless you don't mind waiting a while for a table. The menu is small, but has something for everyone, plus amazing daily features that sell out quickly, so get here early! My personal favorites are the BBQ Chicken Salad with an actual BBQ chicken breast that tastes like it was just pulled off the grill, fresh sweet corn cut off the cob, black beans, cheese, tomatoes, ranch dressing, and tortilla strips. It's seriously the best tasting, most flavorful salad I've ever had. I ordered it twice this past week for lunch. Delicious!! The Southwest Minestrone Soup was warm and fabulous and just perfectly spicy. Exactly what I was looking for to warm up on a chilly April afternoon at the beach. My husband cannot wait each time we come to get the Back Yard Wings. He eats a lot of wings and these are without doubt his favorite. He ordered them twice this past week as an appetizer. He has also had the Chipotle Turkey Joe, a Quesadilla Bison Burger, and a few of the different fresh catches on the feature board. All outstanding. It is hard for my family to agree on places to eat dinner in the OBX because they all love seafood and I do not, but there is never a debate when we want to dine out for lunch. We have never been disappointed at the KDG. You must also find a way to save room for dessert because this is the absolute best part! The Apple Crisp and Strawberry Shortcake will leave you begging for more. My kids (15 and 9) are still talking about their desserts from over a year ago. You CANNOT go wrong here!

First trip to the Outer Banks and we stayed right across the street from this awesome little bar/restaurant that could be mistaken for an airstream camper. I had the salmon salad (twice) which featured a generous portion of grilled salmon on a vegetable medley. My beautiful bride had the pan seared scallops on stone ground cheese grits. She had the catch of the day fish sandwich on our other visit. All were delicious. Although we didn't have dessert, they looked incredible, especially the strawberry shortcake which included fresh local strawberries AND blueberries. The bartenders were Mike and Daniel. We sat at the bar both times and these two work in harmony. They kept up with a full bar, busy restaurant, and those drinking around the bar and outside while waiting for a table. Highly recommended.

This place is unbelievable, the seafood is fresh and cooked perfectly! I had shrimp and soft shell crab, can't go wrong. Everything is local except the frys and they rock... Service is strong, prices are reasonable and the selection is designed to satisfy! Stop reading and go eat.... 1.89 beer, come on!

We were there as a family of four...I ordered the soft shell crab sandwich.. It was OUTSTANDING! My partner got the special which was a goat head fish sandwich, which was equally as good. Service was good although a bit on the pricey side.

KDG is another of those places that we have driven by and walked by for years and never stopped. We went for lunch on a Thursday, off-season and found the place absolutely packed. We were willing to take a couple of the last seats at the bar and avoided the wait. I was in the mood for a fresh fish sandwich and was in luck. Flounder was one of the daily specials. It was beautiful, exactly what I wanted. The fish was fresh and mild and melted in your mouth. It had a very light coating with some black pepper. Ms T's shrimp platter had six good sized shrimp with a coating that was probably Panko. It looked like coconut shrimp, but apparently was not. It was that kind of coarse textured coating, but was not heavy. The shrimp were fresh and well flavored. This was an excellent lunch. Their slaw was also very good, creamy somewhat sweet with enough vinegar to balance it out. I would order their slaw with any dish. I am sure that Kill Devil Grille has made it onto our A-list while at the outer banks. We do need to try them for dinner if we can get in! This place is very popular.

Fun place. Very crowded, small restaurant. Cheese Steak egg rolls were very good and not greasy. Crab cakes were pretty good. Best part of the meal was the Apple Crisp dessert. Service was very attentive.

Order the Beer Can Shrimp!! So fresh and spiced just right. Root Beer float was a hit with my little guy. The smells of the kitchen are so yummy. Great place!

OMG !!! The best meal of my whole vaca so far. Two yummy black and blue lemonades to start with and steak and cheese egg rolls. We also tried their grilled wings that were excellent even though they were a bit on the salty side. We're off to a really good start. The Mrs had the NY Strip which was a bit under and I had the duck breast special which was a bit over but both were very good. Even though we didn't have room for it we ordered the key lime pie for desert. Absolutely done perfect. Maybe I was just glad to have a good meal after eating so much crappy food in OBX or the excellent service just made that much more enjoyable but either way I'm glad I don't live here because I'd be as big as a house. Kudos to KDG.

Very good, upscale diner food. Everything was delicious. The deserts are wonderful. My only complaint: the wine pours are skimpy. If I'm paying 7 to 9 dollars a glass, getting about 3 ounces isn't right.

Truly wonderful experience. So glad my friend (a local) recommended this restaurant. Food was top notch, it arrived quickly, fresh and hot. The service was the best I've received....ever. The staff is so friendly and work with each other (7 different people assisted our table) to provide amazing service. This is a place you must try out. The Strawberry Shortcake was out of this world.

This is, by far, our favorite spot to eat during our annual trip to the Outer Banks. I have loved everything I've ordered here. The crab cake sandwich is excellent, but I usually order one of the daily specials. Can't wait to go back.

The kill devil grill was great. It was an easy walk from our condo but it was good drinks and food. The wait staff is probably the best part of the experience. We honestly needed a day off the beach and we did it at the bar here. The bloody Mary's were excellent as well as the gin and tonics. They had a nice beer selection. But the food was the best part. The wings, steak egg rolls, bruschetta were great apps. We also had the burger and scallop special.

Absolutely everything our group ordered was fantastic! We started with the whole peel and eat shrimp and they were the best I've ever had, the cocktail sauce was excellent too. In our party we had the ribs, fish sandwich, prime rib special, and wahoo over cheese grits special. Each dish was perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. We were uncertain about the blackened prime rib because we had never had it prepared this way but it was superb. We ended the meal with key lime pie which I typically don't care for but the Kill Devil Grill key lime pie is absolutely heavenly!! On top of top notch food, the service was friendly and fast. This has gone to the top of our list of great OBX restaurants!

Where do I begin.....read other reviews and it sounded like the place to go. We're staying right behind the place and noticed the constant crowds. The hour wait was worth it! Grilled chicken wings as an appetizers were spicy and grilled just right. Cheese steak egg rolls, big bacon cheese burger, large fried chicken salad. The fish sandwich of the day was barracuda. Awesome! Then we split the apple crisp and chocolate pecan pie for desert. I would eat here everyday while on vacation. As an added treat, the service was excellent. The whole staff makes sure you are taken care of!

This place is GREAT! Everything you could want in a restaurant. We went three times while in the OBX for six days! We tried the crab cake sandwich, wahoo, kahuna burger, southern fried chicken salad, fried shrimp, & chicken and BBQ ribs. All were absolutely delicious!!! I also LOVED their chicken wings appetizer. Their homemade ranch dressing is to DIE for! I am a huge fan of condiments so homemade ranch is a must! They have a great selection of daily specials, always including fresh local fish. Good prices and wonderful staff. I cannot say enough good things! We also had the homemade apple crisp which was huge! So delicious! I will definitely go back when we head back to the OBX next year!

Was hoping to get a soft shell crab sandwich. Sat down reviewed the menu no soft shell crab :( Then my server listed the specials!! Soft shell crab sandwich score!! Awesome sandwich great fries the kids had pulled pork and the wife had crab cake. All top notch and the slaw served with the BBQ was the bomb. Very friendly staff and great food reasonably priced! My first time to OBX great start to the trip!!

Have been coming to OBX for 17+ years... First time we ate here. But was delish. I had the special... Fresh tuna sandwich. Tuna was seasoned lightly and grilled to perfection. It was served with fresh cut fries. Hubby got bison burger which was tender and full of flavor. It was cooked to medium and seasoned with salt and pepper. His meal came with a side salad. For dessert we got the award winning key lime pie. It was out of this world, creamy and tart topped with homemade whipped cream.

We followed our own advice and were not disappointed - if the locals like it, try it. The worst part of our meal was the coffee, and I'd still drive the six hours from home for a cup. Everything was right about this place - relaxed atmosphere, good location, ample parking, great service, amazing food and good prices. Our server was friendly, helpful and quick to meet - nay, anticipate - our needs. The entire staff is well trained to keep the diners happy and the kitchen rolling. Empty straw wrappers were scooped off the table by passing workers before they could come to a rest. Drinks were refilled within seconds and often as you were answering in the affirmative. Our first bites - appetizers of spinach, artichoke dip and fresh (oh so fresh) mussels - were a solid introduction to full meal. The dip, served with fresh Parmesan chips, was warm and gooey with just the right mix of flavors. This was no chain restaurant dip. The mussels were fresh, perfectly steamed and served in a broth. I typically shy away from broths, but after one taste of this one and I shucked all of the mussels (a generous serving, to be clear) and mixed them in to create a perfect mussel soup. The crusty, grill-fired bread served as a great crouton to add some crunch. The missus ordered off the standard menu, selecting a modest fried shrimp entree. She was not disappointed. The shrimp were perfectly fried - no gummy shrimp or greasy breading. The slaw, though basic in appearance, was firm and flavorful. The fries (an easy thing to get wrong and rarely done right on an entree like this) were a great complement to the shrimp. It's clear they were meant as part of the meal rather than a thrown-together side. Our son went for a daily special - the panko flounder with cheese grits and kale with Andouille. His introduction to grits (an omission I was chagrined to learn I had allowed to happen) was without fail. The kale and sausage added a depth of flavor to the grits that opened his eyes to a great dish. The flounder was expertly prepared with a crunchy, yet unobtrusive, crust. By meal's end, the fish, grits, kale and sausage married into the broth from the greens to form a soup of sorts. I'm not sure if this was the chef's intent - but it was the perfect finish. My rockfish entree was also a special this evening - and I can't thank the fates enough for putting us there when this dish was made available. Blackened fish can go so wrong so fast, but the chef clearly understands that blackening doesn't mean simply coating a fine cut of fish in whatever spices are hanging around the kitchen. The fish had both heat and flavor. The cheesy grits were firm and textured and the avocado Tomatilo salsa was a flavorful delight. This dish was put together by a chef that means to create a complete meal on each plate. We hadn't intended to order dessert, but watching plate after plate of sweet finishes parade past our table encouraged us to inquire. The wife opted for key lime pie - an atypical selection for her, but it presented much like a firm bit of cheesecake and she rarely passes those up. I'm sorry she ordered it; I breezed through my own choice too quickly for fear I'd miss out on a few bites of hers. The raspberry sauce painted across the edge of the plate was a great pair to the tangy key lime pie. The graham crust was moist and flavorful, a refreshing departure from many a dry, crumby mess of lesser quality pies. I went for the chocolate pecan pie. I'm a sucker for pecan pie and was anxious to see how this matched against other pies I've had. If the server had cut a smaller piece and then brought to me what remained in the dish, it still wouldn't have been enough to date my desire for more. The chocolate base was thick and dense like a strong fudge and the pecans held up well against the bold intensity of the base. I don't go in for whipped creams, but I took a few healthy spoonfuls of this fresh-made pairing. The whole plate disappeared within a blink. Our boy picked the apple crumb with fresh vanilla ice cream. This was the highlight of our desserts. The giant ramekin put up a great fight attempting to hold this towering monument to apples, spice and expertly crafted crumb topping together. This dish was so big, other diners were overheard canceling their entrees so they could save room for even a tenth of a serving. The apples were firm and fresh; the crumb topping cracked in perfect-sized bites, filling each generous spoon with a full complement of apples, crumb and fresh ice cream. Oh, the ice cream. Vanilla is ever so pedestrian a flavor. But this one had more flavor and bite than most other decadent ice creams. We could have all shared this dessert alone. We hope to make many a return to Nags Head in the future and this restaurant will likely be the centerpiece of our visit.

Delicious! Came in for lunch on the last day of vacation after getting recommendations from family members and reading other reviews. We actually tried to go by for dinner a couple times but they were packed out so we decided to wait. I got the shrimp and angel hair pasta. It was SO good. The sauce was simple and seemed to be homemade. The shrimp were good, just cooked a couple seconds longer than I'd have liked. No big deal. My husband had the burger and he said it was great. Their fries were good too (yes I stole a couple of his haha). My sister in law got the white pizza and she liked it too. I tried a slice and loved it and I normally don't like white pizza. The service was amazing too - everyone was friendly and attentive. The only wish I had is that the pasta came with bread or they offered side salads or something. Possibly because I was exceptionally hungry after swimming all morning. I would definitely eat there next year on vacation!

Another Nags Head gem. We stopped in for lunch. I ordered one of the specials, fresh grilled tuna served on top of grits with Arugula salad sprinkled over the dish. It was delicious. The grits were creamy and flavorful, the arugula added a peppery mix to the whole dish. The tuna was tender. The only thing I would have changed it is have the tuna cooked medium rare, but that's just my preference. My husband had the fresh fried flounder sandwich. The fish was flakey and white. My son decided on the big kahuna burgers with grilled onions and bacon. It was a hit! Service was excellent.

Really don't want to oversell this as the decor is a little funky and the service a little brusque -- so grandma looking for a white linen table cloth and a view of the ocean might not think it as good as it gets -- but trust me, this is some tremendous coastal food in a unique setting. The front-end really is an old diner, with the bar and counter. But the back opens into a woody dining room of modest size. The space could easily be double given the crowds, but I respect keeping it manageable for the kitchen and the staff and the quality high. I do think that the dinner crush incents the service to be more of the "waddya have" get em in and out variety than the leisurely, make an evening of it type -- but that is understandable both from a revenue maximizing point of view and a need to keep people OK with wait times for a table. Just be aware of that aspect. With all the seafood entrees, we went with the Back Yard Wings (rubbed, smoked, and grilled $8.50) as a contrasting starter and they knocked it out of the park. Big meaty, tender wings that had a depth of flavor you don't often find in wing joints. Picked clean. Next a couple simple salads a house (mixed greens, tomatoes, cukes and croutons tossed with house vinaigrette) and a caesar (house greens, shaved parmesan and homemade croutons with traditional dressing, both $6.50) that were just very fresh with a nice mix of stuff. Perfect intro to the main event. Entrees are in a way pointless to detail, as whatever is fresh and good from the sea is gonna be a great option at KDG. What is very telling is that they know how to prepare and serve seafood here. When I asked if I could get my fish with just a simple sear, the server knew what that was and the kitchen executed it. Cheese grits and local succotash are common sides with seafood options, reminding you that you are both in the South and not eating off the back of a truck. But if you are seafooded out -- the crown roast of pork (cider brined crown roast of pork with mashers and a fresh pineapple salsa $20.95) or St. Louis ribs ($20) make for tremendous options. Just save room for dessert. The Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie, the Key Lime Pie, and the Apple Crisp (served warm with vanilla ice cream) are all killer. I should also note that there are quite a few more wines available by the glass than many places, most at OK prices, especially for the beach.

The Kill Devil Grill is a small and VERY popular local restaurant in the Outer Banks. There's often a wait (unless you go during the middle of the day) for dinner. When we went, we had a 30 minute wait and it was just 5:00. Since it was my first time, I really hoped that the 30 minute wait was worth it. We were greeted upon being seated at our table. Our server came immediately and was friendly throughout our dining experience. The food is American, with some emphasis on Southern cooking. My mom was determined to order crab cakes to satisfy her craving. We decided to order the crab cake sandwich and salmon salad, then we shared both dishes. And of course, I ordered sweet tea! Crab cake- moist and full of crab! They did not skimp on crab which I appreciated. The salmon salad was tasty too. I liked the dressing, it was light but didn't overwhelm the salad. The portions are decently sized too.

I went here for lunch with my husband and our two daughters. It was busy, but we were seated in just a few minutes. The staff was attentive and the restaurant and restrooms were clean. The food was delicious! My husband ordered the grilled swordfish sandwich which was cooked perfectly and served with crispy fries and I ordered the red neck Cuban sandwich which was very flavorful with its smoky pulled pork and also served with yummy fries. Our daughters ordered the kids fish basket and kids shrimp basket. For $6 their meals also included a drink and a scoop of ice cream. The shrimp meal could have had a few more shrimp, but the ones it came with were large. A bigger kid would probably want a couple more. We had a slice of the key lime pie for dessert and were not disappointed. It was one of the best I have ever had. A generous slice topped with fresh whipped cream and served with a fresh strawberry purée which complimented the tart key lime perfectly. We will definitely go back.

We ordered take out since our toddler was very cranky and there was no possible way we could enjoy a meal out. My husband and I ordered the ribs. They were amazing. And what can I say about the Cole slaw. I do not enjoy eating cole but it was the best slaw ive ever had. Never tasted anything so good. I couldnt finish it all but I madr sure to pack it in the cooler to take home so I could enjoy it twice. Next time we are in the neighborhood I would love to try and eat in as it seems like a great atmosphere inside. A most try when on the outer banks!!

Waited an hour to get in, hostess and bar tender both incredibly nice. Great menu selections to choose from. The four of us all got something different. Food came out within 15-20 mins. We stopped by for dinner to have the fish sandwich but when we asked the waitress she said it was tuna - catch of the day ? Really - sorry call me weird but I would be ok with mahi or cod or flounder or catfish or tilapia but it was tuna - so we opted to have the mahi with mashed potatoes and mango salsa 22.95 per plate - we said we would split it and the waitress made a face and said it really wasn't to be split - so we both order a plate and when it came we saw why - small portion - should have been priced 15.95 - food was just ok - I will say the key lime pie was very good - positive ending! - 3 stars because of price $53 for a $40 meal and average tasting food.

So far this place is way too loud. It has a pretty limited menu. My wahoo was good and his salad with salmon was good but we probably won't be back due to the noise level and lack of choices.

Service was good food was good. Our server was very nice and constantly checked on our table and I highly recommend the shrimp it's truly amazing. If your going for a sandwich the pulled looks probably the best on the menu. Nice little place and it's really cool part of the inside (bar area) is made of an old train cart.

Been coming here for years.. I have a shellfish allergy and I split a fish special with my sister. When they brought it out everything was mixed up and the topping on the fish had shrimp on it. The lady bringing it out without a question insisted on giving me a fresh cut of fish with out a topping on the house. It feels good to know people will go the extra mile. Love this place

Really like the setting, of a 60's style diner. Parking is a premium, and expect to wait. I had the shiitake crusted halibut with Yukon gold mashers and hot and sour broth. Excellent. Great crust and season, perfect cook. Wife had the crab cakes, with local crab thanks to the timing. Amazing. Kids had shrimp / chicken, and both were outstanding. Will return.

This came recommended to us by the bike shop rental owner and he didn't let us down. The food was all great! But the cheesesteak egg rolls were the favorite for everyone. When we went back again, we ordered extra. I had ribs the first night and they were good but the southern fried chicken salad the next time was really good. My sister had the pork chop special and it was delicious and my husband claims the crab cakes (I don't eat crab) were incredible. But most importantly, do not skip dessert. The key lime pie may be the best I've ever had.

We came in for a late lunch and the place was still packed. After about a 15 minute wait we got our table and ordered food for our 2 year old son right away. After looking over the menu for a few minutes we placed our orders and our son's food was already being brought to the table. The food was excellent. Came out steaming hot and all of the dishes had excellent flavor; from the fish sandwich to the burgers. The fries were great too. As good as the food was, the service was better. Everyone was super friendly and our server went out of her way to make sure we were taken care of. I would highly recommend this place.

A must go place! Best meal we had in OBX. We came here for dinner and were seated right away. The wait staff is professional and very proficient. The food was great and reasonably priced. We had the philly cheese steak egg rolls for an appetizer. Great with that sticky, gooey cheese that every cheese steak should have. I had the swordfish special. Blackened swordfish over mashed potatoes with pineapple salsa. I gotta say I was in food heaven. I've never had swordfish that good. Melt in your mouth with the perfect amount of seasoning. My lady had the kahuna burger. She loved it. Wonderful flavor with a pillow-soft bun. Perfectly cooked fries were seasoned just right. She had apple crisp with ice cream on top and I had the key lime pie. They were equally delicious. Apple crisp had the good home-cooking feel and key lime pie had that zing that you want. So, add up great food, waitresses that do their job the right way, a very clean restaurant and reasonable prices. You get a restaurant that we will be coming to every year we come down. Good times. We liked this place so much, we brought 5 more people with us for lunch the next day. Not a single complaint and everyone raved about the food. Kill Devil Grill has set the benchmark for us in OBX.

A local recommended we go (practically insisted we had to try it) and we are so happy we did. It was busy when we got there, but we found a seat at the bar (the front of the diner) and the wait was only about 25 minutes. We got a booth and our server (Natalie) was great -- on top of it, without ever being overbearing, she also provided some great food recommendations. Well-priced, with good wines selection, this was a winner all around! We ate the following: steak and cheese egg rolls: they may sound weird but they tasted great! buffalo wings: they were grilled, the meat was high quality - the best I have ever had. crab cakes: they had no filling and tasted amazing. rib-eye steak: my husband had this and gave me a bite (and we are picky about steak!) --the best we have had in a restaurant in many years! key lime pie: leave room for this! the crust and pie were amazing!

The wings are ah-MAZING and service is awesome! Tried the salmon special & it was delicious. Very nice atmosphere, delicious specials, great music, friendly server, food was great and the parking lot was full during lunch in OCT which is the off season! We got into a booth in less than 5 min so there was hardly a wait.

Quite possibly the best restaurant on the OBX! Was there July 30, 2015. I had the Backyard Wings and my girlfriend had the soft shell crab which was a special. Both were awesome. The hostess was great and wait staff was smiling and on point! Only gripe was the bar staff while we waited were not the smiling type. Though they were nice. Bad bar day I suppose. Not bad enough to warrant a lower rating. I have been coming here for 7 years and have never had a bad experience. Highly recommend the wings!

Very busy at lunch and parking is difficult....but it's worth the trouble for the food and service. I had the special, grilled Rockfish on creamy polenta with avocado, black bean salsa, smoked shrimp and cream and a cilantro oil drizzle...Delish!!!

One of my favorite spots to eat in OBX. Can be a long wait for dinner as the restaurant is pretty small but definitely worth it! The spinach dip is packed with spinach and cheese and the burgers are always juicy.

Flew into First Flight Airport and grabbed a cab here. Really good sea food. I had the Fisherman's Stew and a Soft Shelled Crab sandwich for lunch... Excellent!!! Loved the fries too...

Not enough stars to give for both the service and food! After living in southeastern nc for 7 years then moving to Seattle for the past 3, it was so refreshing to visit this diner and experience true southern hospitality again! Sorry Seattle, but your hipster service can't compare. Everyone I talked to recommended this place for the soft shell crab and I was not disappointed....So I'll pay it forward and recommend that you definitely put this place on your list to visit when in OBX!

We were recommended here by the owner of our B&B in Nags Head. All of us girls were impressed by the food here! SO good! The service was also excellent, very attentive and patient! They are also happy to give local recommendations if you're from out of town like we were! There are daily lunch specials that are first come first serve basis until they run out! I ordered the fish sandwich with the house tarter sauce and was blown away! The tarter sauce had just a little kick to it with capers in it, it was delicious! The fish was flaky and crispy on the outside. My other friend ordered the shrimp angel hair and it looked fabulous, she said the shrimp was super fresh and tasty and the tomato sauce was yummy! All portions were very fair and the salads I saw at other tables looked huge! Seating is comfortable for families and children. I do wish there was outdoor seating, though! Clean place, delicious food! Would definitely go back, this is a better place for lunch vs dinner in my opinion. It's a casual place for t shirt and shorts but maybe not your beach cover ups

Wow - this was a real find in the Outer Banks where there are so many touristy, over-priced restaurants. Based on the great Yelp reviews, we had dinner here tonight and it was a great experience from start to finish. We arrived about 8:30 and had to wait 20 minutes for a table. We were seated at a table in the bar and served the bartender. He was super-helpful and very friendly. Started with a huge Caesar salad with a great tangy dressing. Entrees: jumbo soft-shell crabs over polenta, crab cakes, & local swordfish with pickled vegetables. Everything was great. I've tried a lot of crab cakes and these were easily among the best I've had. They asked us to wait for the fries that accompany the crab cakes so they could bring us fresh ones (and they were and hot too!). Dessert was a fabulous apple crisp which easily served all three of us. I have been to many resort restaurants that really weren't worth the money. If this restaurant was near my home, I would be a regular. Thank you for restoring my faith in beach restaurants!

Our meal was very Jekyll and Hyde. I loved my meal. My girlfriend... not so much. Luckily for you KDG my girlfriend only carries 1 point. When you pull up outside it looks like a small trailer diner from way back. Even when you walk in it looks that way. Then you see the stairs, and when you go down them you are in a full sized restaurant. It was a big surprise. We arrived late in the evening so a lot of the food was out. I can respect that. It means it is made fresh, and when you're out you're out. No complaints there. Well... minor complaint because one thing didn't appear out, I ordered it, then server returned to tell me it was out so I had to pick something else. Mild annoyance. As I previously mentioned, it was late in the evening (about closing time) so not a lot of customers. With that said, service was marginal at best. I spent much of the meal with an empty water glass. That's a big no-no for me. I think the high walls on the booths are nice because it feels more private, but it is harder for servers to see a customer in need. Minus 1 star for service. The primary reason we came here was or the philly cheesesteak eggrolls. A place where we live used to have them, we loved them, and then they were taken off the menu. So when I was planning out OBX trip and saw them on the menu I knew we had to come. They were amazing. I recommend them to everyone. Just try to be patient and not burn your mouth. I couldn't wait and dealt with the consequences. I ordered the crab cake... because... well... I love crab cakes. One large crab cake came out that was amazing. It was all crab. No blah filler. It was delicious from beginning to end. I think my side was good, but whatever it was was overshadowed by my crab cake because I have since forgotten it. My girlfriend ordered the special of the day. Not sure what all was involved but it was fish, shrimp, some veggies, and grits. She pretty much hated it. I tasted it. Everything seemed okay except for the fish. It was pitched as "blackened", but it looked and tasted like it was dipped in liquid smoke. The smoke was completely overpowering and seeped into all the food. It made it almost unbearable. My one bite was okay, but I couldn't imagine eating the whole thing. I'm not sure if they had used the same pan all night and we just had the extra blackening from all the previous orders or what but it was just too much. I ordered key lime pie to go. It was delicious. Key lime pie is one of my favorites, and it always seems to be better near the coast. Minus 1 star for service, and minus 1 star because my girlfriend didn't like her food. She had a bad experience, and mine was great. That's how it goes.

Definitely a favorite. It can be hard to get a table in the summer, we are frequent diners in the off-season. Farm to table food, expertly prepared.

The fresh soft shells over top some grits was dank dank. But it did kinda suck when there wasn't any toilet paper for the after math. Yum. Salad.

Enjoyed every piece of this experience. It was our first time in the outerbanks and stopped to have lunch before checkin at our hotel. We felt welcomed as soon as we came in. Place was crowded but food was exceptional! Michael was phenomenal in describing the specials and giving wonderful service. I would recommend this for anyone visiting OBX. And to top it off we almost left our shrimp and the waitress's ran it out to us!

This place may look like a down home diner, but expect 5 star hotel service and food. The servers are friendly, smart, attentive(with full restaurant), and very helpful with menu choices for first timers. Our drinks were filled up before it was down to a quarter. The food, plating of the food was INCREDIBLE. Had an amazing Beer Steamed Shrimp and cocktail sauce that we tried to get them to sell it to us and they wouldn't lol swordfish burger, kahuna burger, key lime pie(not your ordinary key lime pie. It's crazy good) and chocolate pecan pie. Even the fries were so good we didn't leave one left over. Because of this, you'll have to wait a little but we only waited 30 mins during lunch hours. Must-go place if you are on vacation here.

4 1/2 stars. Quaint local joint with lots of local flair. Don't expect high end decor. Expect a beach diner with well above average food for a beach diner. It's popular for a reason, so expect a wait or choose waaaaay off hours to dine. Good food. Good service. Delicious apple crisp for dessert!

The KDG is by far the best place to eat on the OBX period. Period! Here's the best way for me to back up that statement: We were frequent visitors here when we lived in Raleigh and visited the OBX regularly. Now that we do not live on the East Coast, we made sure our recent East Coast trip put us in the OBX on a day when the KDG was open, and on that day we ate both lunch AND dinner there. And we took food to go for the next day. Man, we missed this place! First, the decor. It's an old diner car that's also been kind of expanded. So you walk into the diner car part of the restaurant and then the rest of the restaurant extends back from there. The hostess stand is located off to your left. And yes, there can be a wait at busy times. But it's totally worth it. Sit at the counter if you're comfortable... that will help you cut your wait and will be just as awesome. Things to know: -This is the type of place where they get super fresh seafood and what they get is what they get. So on any given day, there can be five or six specials on the board but some of them are in fairly limited supply. So early diners are generally rewarded with the broadest selection. If you come late in the day, the odds are high that some of the daily specials will already have been "eighty sixed" and taken off the board. -You can't get on the waiting list by calling ahead, so show up. Another reason to go early. -Good beer selection and super friendly bar staff. -Save room for dessert. See below. -Closed Sunday and Monday, plan accordingly. Food: -Philly cheese steak eggrolls are incredible. Full of oozing cheese, sliced rib eye and onions, plus a delightful light tomato sauce. These things are so good that we've tried to recreate them at home. -Wings are also awesome if you are looking for a second app. -Wood roasted chicken is AMAZING. -Go with the specials if you see some seafood you like on the board. They are always amazing. We had softshells this last time. SO GOOD. -Fried chicken burger is great, hand ground in house and so, so delicious. -Dessert: Best key lime pie EVER. EVER. I would send people from Florida here. Don't miss it. Also, the chocolate chip pecan pie is pretty bombastic, if you have some chocolate lovers at your table. Take a slice to go if you can't eat it there. That's it. Go here. Eat good food. Thanks for all the delicious meals, KDG! See you next time.

I came earlier this summer and HOLY COW. SO good, really friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. We ended up going on a night that was half off wine which was a fantastic compliment (especially with a 45 minute wait for a table). If you are close enough to walk, then do that as parking fills fast. Also, the wait CAN be long so go on a half off wine night, buy a couple of bottles before dinner and pregame. The food: GET THE WINGS. That was my groups favorite part of the meal. Definitely unique compared to your typical spot.

  • Stephen S.

If you only eat one thing while at the outer banks, get the backyard BBQ wings. Holy cow I am drooling just thinking about them. I thought it was very clever to have some Pulp Fiction and The Ladies Man references in the menu. I did order the Big Kahuna burger. I exclaimed, "that is a tasty burger!" But my wife didn't get it.... It really was pretty tasty but they should just call it the Kahuna burger because it wasn't that big at all... My wife was happy with her philly cheese spring rolls and her meal. I would def recommend to a friend however with the expectation that the portions are not huge and the menu didn't offer as many choices as we would have liked. Aside from that, great place to eat!

  • Sarah P.

Excellent menu with options for mixed groups of tastes. All the food was prepared perfectly, the staff was friendly and it was super quick. I would definitely go back and if I lived local try and make it a regular trip! Yum! I was not disappointed!

This was the first restaurant I loved in Outer Banks (Nags Head area) - everywhere else was ok. We got there early hoping to beat the crowd, b/c they too don't take reservations. But even by arriving by 5:30, there was still an hour wait. Everything down here is overpriced, so it was such a delight to find after ordering two sodas, 2 alcoholic beverages, 2 entrees, 1 appetizer, and 2 desserts, the bill was only $87 dollars! Best money I spent down here. We had a crappy dinner last night and it cost $100; I still don't know how that happened. I read the reviews about the key lime pie, and they were so right- it was delicious - that crust was the best I've ever had. We loved everything we ordered and I would definitely go back to this place. It was worth the wait.

  • Shawn C.

Arrived for a late-ish dinner on a Saturday night at the peak of the season. Had an hour wait but it was worth it. A cocktail at the bar and some perfectly steamed shrimp made the time pass quick. Main courses were perfect and the key lime pie some of the best I have had. We will go back before we leave.

tl;dr version: Get here earlier for access to all their daily specials, sit at the bar for quicker service, daily specials are worth the price (every one of them was 20-25 per), desserts were awesome and try the wings (they looked and smelled delicious, we wished we had tried them.) Has a great atmosphere at the bar, good music, fun people, great for a casual upscale dining experience. My wife and I went here on Valentines day, around 7:30PM and decided to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table. Beer/Liquor selection is good, bartenders were really friendly and knowledgeable of both the menu and drinks. They feature daily specials and were out of everything but two of them by time we got there, so get there early! We started off with the "Award Winning" Key Lime Pie, with Nilla Wafer crust. It was simply amazing, and we were glad we went for dessert first. I ordered a blackened mahi over cheese grits and a crab/corn cold mixture. The fish was tasty and fresh, grits were some of the best I've had. My wife got a spaghetti with grilled shrimp and cream sauce. She loved it, shrimp was very good and the main dish was awesome. Overall one of the best places we ate in OBX, was a bit expensive, but the craftsmanship of the meals was worth the price.

As a local......This is my favorite "Go To" restaurant on the OBX. Can be noisy and a bit of a wait, but well worth it. CLosed on Sunday and Monday. Very casual and moderately priced. Nice Bar as well and Excellent Service. Look at the Special Board first and order off of it if you see something you like, but if you arrive late, they will be out of some of the specials. All Salads are good as well as deserts. You may want to Share a desert as they are huge. Some of the best wings on the Beach.

  • Adi G.

The absolute only thing about this place that was annoying was the wait (at 515) and parking. The service and staff were fantastic, friendly and fast. They took the time to talk about the specials and answer questions. Karla was a great server. Every single bite was worth the wait. The wings were very delicious, meaty and a bit different from your average wing joint. My wife got the shrimp pasta with marinara and I got the bison burger. The apple crisp topped of the meal. Take the time and go to this place.

Earlier today I was saying that I didn't really trust Yelp because I've only reviewed places where I've had an absolutely horrible experience, so therefore I didn't think many people got on and had positive reviews because they weren't motivated by the rage at wasting time and money on a cruddy meal or service. I still don't know if I'm completely wrong in that regard but Kill Devil Grill is my exception. We just had an absolutely fantastic dinner here while on vacation, in fact, we'll be back tomorrow night! The service was great, and the food was the best we've had in North Carolina. Upon walking in (or driving up!) you don't expect the high quality food that comes out of the kitchen here. The Yelp category for this restaurant is "American" but a better description is "Down Home Gourmet."

  • Megan W.

Visiting from Portland Oregon and what a great experience. Tried the specials for dinner and they were excellent! Since our dinner was so good we ventured back for lunch and were not disappointed. The hamburger and the chicken burger rank top burger in all our travels. Would highly recommend even if there is a wait.

I reAd this was the place to try. Walked in and had no idea where to check in. A nice customer at the counter pointed us to the hostess station. 25 minute wait on an off season. Ok let's wait...ok very very noisy and we sit down only to find outlying special is gone. Great. It's only 6:30 and the special is gone. Not happy. Going with crab cakes lets see how this goes...good crab cakes. Salty fries. Still wish the special was available but happy with the meal Come early!!!

This place was excellent. They have twice-daily specials (different for lunch and dinner every day) that all sounded great. I had the pulled pork sandwich which was full of flavor and came with amazing fries.

Been coming to the OBX for three years...best reasonably priced food we have found. Get the specials...they are worth being adventurous. The service was outstanding, food came quickly and was delicious. Our glasses were never empty, and the kids meals were real food. We will definately be back!

Went for lunch and was pleased. It's small and large parties will have to separate. Either diner booth or sitting at the diner bar, no tables. The service was GREAT. The wait staff was very attentive. I had the fresh fried fish sandwich. You can taste the freshness at the first bite. Definitely wasn't frozen or processed. Fries were hot and tasty. Everyone in my party (9) was pleased with their choice. Desserts looked great and we had difficulty deciding. We had the apple crisp and strawberry shortcake. BOTH were delicious and huge, enough for at least 2. Our apple crisp was shared amongst 4. Only downfall, if you ask for extra sauce they don't tell you it's an extra charge.

We had their house made wings in delicious wing sauce and phillycheesesteak eggrolls...be careful they r hot, nice selection of beer. The server was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the area and attractions. It was a very cool little place to hang out and munch:)

Pros: - The food was excellent! My family and I wanted to try the fish and crab cakes that make KDG so popular, and they didn't disappoint. We got the fish sandwich that was local tailfish as well as the crab cake sandwich. Both were awesome! The fries were good, too, but maybe a tad too salty. Otherwise, no complaints. - The service was very friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and helpful. Our server knew everything about the specials and answered any questions we had about them. She definitely made our visit very comfortable. - Good price point. Our meals (2 adults and 1 child) came to a tad over $40 after gratuity. For quality food, it was very much worth the price. Cons: - The place was quite busy, and so the noise level was high. Don't come here if you want a quiet meal! Overall: Great seafood options and terrific service make for a great lunch/dinner experience.

  • Ryan W.

Great place to eat and even enjoyed the 1hr wait. Had a couple of drinks and enjoyed the cool ocean breeze. I had the hamburger. My only complaint if this is one was the bartenders were chatty between them selves when I kinda wanted my beer ASAP. Great spot and will return on every vacation.

  • Sara B.

Cannot say enough good things about Kill Devil Grill! We were hungry for a late lunch after playing tourist all morning. From the moment we stepped in we were impressed. The service is amazing! The food is just as good! I had a house salad topped with a crab cake. Wow. Great crab cake and fantastic salad. My husband had the tuna special - grilled tuna steak on top of mashed potatoes. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Our only regret is that we were not able to visit again before returning home. This is a must try in the OBX.

First time my wife and I vacationed in this area and we hit this place twice! Everything was excellent! Service was impeccable. My glass was never empty and I never had to contend with empty plates cluttering the table. Don't miss this place if you're in the area!

Full range of prices, you can eat for under ten, or walk out 100 lighter with wine an appetizers! excellent fish dishes that are as drag as can be eaten, service was great you can tell the restaurants quality.... it's always crowded, I would recommend it highly

Incredible food and service! We dined here with three kids and our waitress Marlena gave us great service! She didn't miss a beat with two demanding boys and one indecisive girl. We had the lump crab and cold roasted chicken, delicious! The cole slaw was the best I have ever tried, the strawberries and blueberries on strawberry shortcake dessert...amazing. Highly recommended!

GOOD GOD. I've never had such dank food in my life. The chef is a saint. Soft shell crab. Done. Done. Done.

Fast fast fast! Packed packed packed! Awesome place if you have a seat bc there is literally NO room to stand, but people are nice therefore the wait is tolerable. Two bartenders for the entire restaurant which means they worked their asses off all night! They had their own little 'diner' area to serve AND take care of the servers. Job well done. Best Crab Cakes I ever had...pure lump no fill. Best fried shrimp I ever had...butterflied and battered so lightly that you truly didn't feel like they were fried (you know w that heavy stuff :/)...they were outstanding! REAL Key Lime pie w homemade crust that made you want to start eating from the back or at least you couldn't wait to get there! Specials sold out quickly, but menu items were just as good. Reasonable prices and entertainment was provided by the open kitchen, bartenders and just plain ole people watching! Fun & boisterous place! Will definitely return!

So let me just say... The 45 minute wait IS worth it!!! Holy cow, we ate dinner out for the entire week of vacation, and this was the absolute best place we went! I got the chicken pasta dish...killer! My picky husband got the ribs and chicken, also amazing! Please, do yourself a favor and do NOT skip dessert, the best key lime pie I've ever had and I would kill for another apple cobbler. Great service and friendly people! Will visit here EVERY year from now on!

  • Dane G.

With seven of us looking for a place to eat out we decided on this place cause of yelp. The wait wasn't that long, but there is a bar and outside waiting area where you can enjoy drinks while waiting on your table. Once our table was ready they actually split us up. 4 at one table and 3 at the other. That's the only reason that this place lost a star because the food was great and the service was great too. I definitely recommend this place. I had the ribs and cheesesteak egg rolls both great. The burger is to die for and so is the fried shrimp and fish sandwich which was swordfish that day.

  • Amanda C.

We came here after reading all of the wonderful reviews. I must say this was by far the best meal we had in OBX. The wings were TO DIE FOR. I got the blackened mahi mahi over angel hair and ate every last bite! They also had some good local craft beers which my husband and I are always on the lookout for. We wanted to go back for a second meal but they were closed on Sunday.

This place is amazing!!! After a long drive to the Outer Banks our first stop was Kill Devil Grill for lunch. The places was packed so we had to wait for approximately 20 minutes but it was well worth it! I had an amazing local fish sandwich off their Specials of the Day board. Our server/s were great...very attentive, friendly, and great sense of humor. Meals were affordably priced and portions were large. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals and the laid-back atmosphere. I highly recommend checking this place out during your stay in the Outer Banks. Definitely my favorite lunch place by far!

  • Katie B.

After many years visiting OBX we talked to a local to get the scoop on the best places to eat and she told us Kill Devil Grill. This place is a hidden gem! The outside looks like a diner, but inside you will find a surprisingly gourmet menu. Spinach dip is excellent, the chips were amazing. Had the best crab cakes ever, they were loaded with crab. It's a small restaurant, so you may have to wait but it's worth it.

Great food, great service. Make their own tarter sauce....recipe is secret and they charge you for extras. Excellent crab cake sandwich and fries. Will return!

I called at 8pm on a Friday for a takout order and was told to call back later if the kitchen can accommodate take orders at that time. Wow, really? but ok, I'll call back. I was craving for some shrimp but they ran out. We got the wings, the kahuna burger and the key lime pie. My husband said the kahuna burger was pretty good. The wings... It's a good consolation prize since they ran out of the shrimp. I was just telling my husband that I miss home cooking. It definitely is what you would find at a Filipino barbeque (sans the side sauce). That with a side of jasmine rice and I can be sitting back at my moms backyard. Key lime pie is not usually offered in NJ/NY restaurants so I had to try it. This has a consistency of like a flan (think - creamier panna cotta) and definitely the tartness of the lime. I can see how people raved about it. Personally, it's not my favorite flavor but I will give props because it was made really well. If I ever vacation back to the OBX, this would be my first stop.

Jess and I ate here last night for dinner after hearing a lot of good reviews. It was just as we heard. It appears to be a old fashioned silver diner trailer but then you walk through to an expanded dinning section. The food is an inspired take on unique dishes, for instance I had 3 round crispy plantain tots. The wings came out first. The dryrub was spicey and came out charred. I found them more tastey than Jess. She ordered from the menu the grilled chicken and buttered angle hair pasta. She like it. The before mentioned plantains swayed me to order the pork plate with rice and beans and plaintains. The staff, almost entirely woman, are very attentive. Our pleasant waitress took the time to go over ever special on the board. After every bite someone stopped by the table to pick up some trash or offer a napkin or refill a drink. Conversation was intermittent but not impossible but after a long day in the sun I would have rather the waitstaff be there only when I needed them.

Just had the best meal here of the entire week. The backyard chicken wing appetizer was so good, I wanted to get three of them for my meal. The cider brined pork chop with mango salsa was outstanding. It was a special that needs to make the regular menu. Must eat here if in OBX.

I asked a server from another restaurant where they go to eat? where else would they recommend to eat besides the current restaurant ? They recommended Kill Devil Grill, omg what a great find. We ordered the chicken wing appetizer , they were Awesome ! Also had the crab cake sandwich , the bun was so soft and crab cakes were yummy. I can't wait to go back. The staff was friendly and treated us well ...great find ...

At this price pt this was a pretty good place. I followed the lead from Trip Advisor and decided to go here with my family. It's a family place and really good and considerable people come here during the peak hours. I had the BBQ ribs and had to come back two hours later and order ANOTHER order rack of ribs, it was that good. As a big fan of BBQ, I've been to Hill Country in Texas, it had a nice smoked flavor and was really good. Their french fries and cheesesteak eggrolls were also quite tasty. I was actually reluctant to order the cheesesteak eggrolls but hey she said they were pretty popular. I'd come back here in a heartbeat if I ever make my way down to OBX again!!! Did I say another plus was that they were VERY reasonably priced?

Food is food most of the time but Kill Devil Grill has set a new bar! The wings are the best I have eaten. Smoked flavor and juicy. Small restaurant and great food definitely a treasure of beach.

Stopped by here because of the great reviews we saw on Yelp. Definitely lived up to what we expected. Had the best crab cake I've ever tasted. Key lime pie was wonderful. Service was good, and atmosphere was relaxed. It's located inside an old diner, which surprised and pleased us. We'll definitely be back to try more of their food.

Our Bed & Breakfast host suggested we checked out this restaurant for lunch. We are glad we did. It was a cute, cozy diner. They have a very small menu but that left room for lots of specials. Our server was amazing and led us to some really great entrée choices. I got the Mahi and Grits special. The center of the fish was dark which was unpleasant but I cut it out and the rest was really great. Perfect portion size. My husband got a burger special that was delicious. The caesar salad dressing was so good. I do not usually like caesar but I ate a lot of this one from my husbands plate! The place is a little small, it did not look like it could accommodate more than 5 people at a table. I would recommend it as a great day date lunch!

I have a place at OBX and have eaten at the Grill many, many times. Never had a problem with any thing I have ordered. Food is fresh and well prepared. If you think the food is good during the summer season, try dining during the off season. The off season lunch specials are IMO the best on the beach. They also have some innovative meals like grilled swordfish over fried grits with various toppings. Don't say you don't like grits until you have tried them here.

Found this place based on yelp reviews and they were right. CLEAN restaurant, DELICIOUS food, and AWESOME wait staff. At our table we had the Big Kahuna Burger, Crab Cake Sandwich, Fish Sandwich and the Grilled Chicken with angel hair pasta - all of which were very well made. The table stayed clean and our drinks were continuously filled. All around fantastic place to go!! We also got a piece of key lime pie to go... it didn't make it home - delicious!!

The best wings I have ever had any ware. This restaurant is very good overall, and the service is friendly, but the wings are what you will come back for. My steak I ordered was not cheap, the meet was very high quality, it was overcooked, but very tasty. I would suggest to this restaurant management staff to not give a customer any grief if their steak is overcooked and they would like a new one. I ordered my steak MR and it came out almost well done (just a little pink). I know it is important to keep labor and food cost down, but great customer service is at the end what creates volume and volume keep the doors open long term.

Very friendly staff and the food is always on point! Their specials are so reasonable and it's difficult to pick just one! Love this place and it's our top pick for any meal when visiting the Banks. They have some really good chefs.

The service was the best I have had anywhere in years! They were amazing. The food was wonderful, tasty, and original. Everything came out hot and very quickly. The atmosphere is fun and different. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the area!

Kill Devil Grill looks like a fun old diner from the outside. They had hour-long waits the entire time we were in OBX, so we didn't have the opportunity to eat dinner there with the way our schedules lined up. We did swing by to pick up dessert after eating at Blue Moon Beach Grill. With that in mind, I will simply tell you that the apple crisp from KDG is among the best I have ever had by a wide margin. The crumble topping was enormous and yet not too sweet or overwhelming. The apple was perfectly cooked, and sliced small as to not end up with with the tough large chunks that you get in many similar desserts. We got it to go, and over the next two days (it was enormous) I ate the hell out of it. It would be worth a return visit for that alone, but I assume this was an indication of a great meal I will enjoy there one day.

Another one of my must eats anytime I'm in the OBX. The food is always well prepared, the service is always fantastic, and the atmosphere is always pleasant. I prefer the soft shell crab when it's in season, they always prepare it perfectly, and usually serve it with a side of delicious cheese grits. If the SS isn't in season go with the crab cakes, they aren't as good as Coastal Provisions, but they are still delicious. To finish the meal off you absolutely have to get a piece of Key Lime Pie, even if you hate Key Lime Pie, this will change you forever. Bottom line, don't worry about the lines or the wait..it is 100% worth it!!

We spend a week in the OBX every year. We come here at least once or twice that week. A local recommended the place to us years ago. Wait times are long however it's worth it and our kids enjoy playing the ring toss game in the front. THE BEST MEAL IN THE OBX. Their BBQ wings are highly recommended. They are big and juicy with just the right amount of seasoning in the sauce. We typically get their daily special. The fish is always fresh and are coupled with great sauces and vegetables. Don't pass this place up.

Serious contender for best eats in OBX. Always a must-visit when we're here. Great with kids, and the service is fantastic. Tonight we had the Sezar Salad, spiced and fried shrimp, and a BBQ ribs & chicken special. Finished with strawberry shortcake, and grabbed the $2 beer special with the meal. All was fresh, local, and served fast and hot.

I was one of seven who ate lunch here today and we loved it. We had to wait 30 min for a table, but we ordered a great cocktail from the bar and the time passed quickly. We ordered 3 appetizers...white pizza, spinach dip and wings. All were excellent and between us we finished all three. We ordered 2 shrimp burgers, crab cake sandwich, fried shrimp, fish sandwiches. Everyone was more than happy with their meal. Great food! I would definitely recommend this place. Food was great, service was great and prices were reasonable.

Decided to try something different for lunch yesterday. Stumbled upon this jewel that resembles an old trailer establishment. Both of us were pleased with the service and the food. The place was very busy but we opted for seats the bar. Our server was fantastic and engaged with everyone she was taking care of, giving tips and hints about local secrets. This is one of the best lower priced meals we've had! And the food is definitely worth the wait! Order the crab cake sandwich or the big kahuna burger you won't regret it!

This was the only resturant we ate at twice in the week we were in the Outer Banks and we tried one evening to order the Apple Crisp (which they were out of). We ordered 6 different meals the first time and no one in my group had a bad thing to say about the food (and if you knew my family, you know hell froze over with this statement). There wasn't a clean plate at the counter after our visit. And I can't recommend the Apple Crisp enough!

This is by far my favorite restaurant on this planet! I am never disappointed when I eat there, the Key lime pie alone is worth the trip. The backyard wings are on par with any wings you will find. Daily specials are always fresh and exciting. The big Kahuna burger has some of the tastiest beef I have ever had. So many choices and I never leave unhappy or hungry. The owner is a sweetheart and really cares about her customers input. Make sure you get in early as it does get busy in peak season (summer).

I am an KDG addict! The food is delicious, the service is attentive, the restaurant is clean and it's all set to the best soundtrack. I have tried many of the specials and have never been disappointed. My only suggestion would be to offer at least one healthy option on the kids menu.

This restaurant was recommended to us at the Hilton Garden Inn the night before the OBX Marathon. I really wanted a decent cheeseburger. I ordered the Big Kahuna Burger and it was amazing! It was cooked to a med/med-well temp and had fresh, delicious cheese and topped with some yummy bacon (I don't usually eat bacon, but I figured I needed all the protein I could get before the big race!). My husband really enjoyed his cup of chili and chicken salad. Besides the food, the service was EXCELLENT and the atmosphere had a great vibe. We will definitely go back the next time we visit the Outer Banks!

The wait was discouraging, but don't be scared it was half the time we were told. The wine was freezing, beer was cold, bartenders are friendly. I must admit I was skeptical, but everything was delish. Wings were perfecto, cheesesteak eggrolls are to die for. Crab cakes as an entry, barely any fillers. Wait staff attentive, friendly, and make you want to come back. GREAT FRIES!

  • Renee C.

OMG their wings and rémoulade sauce is to die for. I consider myself a wing connoisseur and these were the best wings I've ever had in my life. I asked if they bottled their rémoulade sauce because I would have bought a bottle on the spot, unfortunately no. The drinks are fairly priced. I would say eating here was one of the highlights of my trip.

First time visit to OBX and our bed and breakfast host recommended this place. wow, nothing short of delicious. the staff were great, the food choices were so tasty sounding that it made it hard to decide, and the quality was top notch. my wife and I shared a cup of chili, kickass wings, tuna sandwich and the pork plate. everything rocked. eventhough there was no room left we still had a slice of key lime pie (preordered at the suggestion of our host on the fact that they run out cuz it is so damn good) This pie was the best key lime I have had period. total bill was 40 bucks. just go there.

This place is soooo good! Great food, exceptional service and a wonderful atmosphere. Don't be surprised if you have to wait. Trust me, it is worth it. The restaurant is small and has a diner feel to it. The wait staff is always friendly and accommodating. They always have great specials and have a variety of options for picky eaters. So let me tell you a little story... I had the crab cakes at Kill Devil Grill and they were so good that I have been on a crab cakes kick (say that 10 times fast!) for a few months now. Unfortunately, I live in Indiana and fresh seafood is either pricey or just plain not good. If I had an extra 15 hours to drive to Kill Devil Grill I would, just to get the crab cakes. Delicious!

Came here for lunch on the fourth of July. The place really fills up. I would've given it four stars but the "Jumbo" crab cake was not so Jumbo. The chocolate pecan dessert was amazing! I was lucky enough to get the last slice. If you're looking for a place for a dessert and a coffee..you might want to try this place out. The place is VERY clean and the younger waitresses keep it a very chill environment. I say this because I visited Sam and Omie's for breakfast. ;)

Wow, what a different experience from last year! It's a small place that gets busy early, not a good combo. We only waited 20 minutes arriving at 5:15 PM. It's pretty much an old diner style set up. The food... My wife was happy with her salmon salad. The kids meals were simple. My daughter got a chicken breast on dirty mashed potatoes and my son got chicken fingers. I didn't try my daughters, but my son's chicken tenders and fries were a bit over cooked. Although he didn't seem to mind. My fish sandwich was the problem. Once I got it (we'll get to that later) I found it slightly overcooked and unbelievably bland. I almost didn't finish it. It was fried and flavorless unless you count the old oil. Mind you I wanted it grilled and blackened. Dessert was good, key lime pie and chocolate pecan pie. Although I was shocked that the pecan was just wide enough to be a wedge, I was shocked for $6. Service.... hmmmm. My experience began when the buzzer went off on the pager. We were told we were going one place and then were taken to another. No big deal. .. The waitress takes our drink order and comes back and asks for our meal order then walks off to get straws... gone at least a minute. Awkward. She takes everyones order and mine last, I Inquire if the fish of the day is the same as the catch of the day. Told "yes" and it can be grilled and blackened. Our meal shows up with another waitress. I first tried to send her away because the plate did not look right, so then I figured out everybody else had the right food except for me. She said okay we'll fix that and walked away. Then our original waitress shows up and says "you ordered the special," I said no I ordered the fish sandwich. Then she kept pressing until finally she agrees to bring the fish sandwich... like it was my fault or I changed my order. I get it, there was a misunderstanding but what happened to the customer is always right and bottom line is... it was not what I ordered. So the food finally comes out as my family is just about done eating, I start to eat and realized I want some tartar sauce because there is a not enough on the sandwich. No problem here comes more tartar... at the end I find an additional charge for extra tartar sauce after my meal was late and my order was wrong. Oh yes... and deadly sin of letting drinks run dry. Overall I just wasn't happy with the service or the quality of the food. It just wasn't as good as last year. The way the server handled the miscommunication left as bad a taste in my mouth as the fish sandwich. Two stars because my wife liked her food.

Fantastic service. Great food. So little else to say. The burger and fries my wife shared were delicious. Can't wait to come back and try the crab cake. I'll echo all others and add: get the key lime pie. Worth every calorie!

I'm not someone who likes to wait for a table. I usually move to somewhere else rather than wait but the food I was seeing served at nearby tables kept me there and it was worth the wait. The food was excellent and the service was as good as it gets. The place is pretty small and it can get loud but the people and the food make it worthwhile. I don't hesitate to recommend it. I wish I could go back to OBX and eat there tonight.

This place is always packed, and there is a reason for it. It is easily my favorite restaurant in the OBX. The wings are amazing! If you go here and don't get the wings you are missing out on a potentially life changing culinary experience. As far as entrees go you can't miss. From the soft shell crab special, to the pork chop, to the burger it is all flavorful and fresh. Truly a wonderful dining experience.

I am a true foodie. Hands down, don't waste your time going anywhere else! I came with my family of four and we all agree that we cannot remember being this totally satisfied with any restaurant in our memory. From the appetizer, to entrees, to key lime pie and apple crisp (get BOTH). We will be back for lunch tomorrow. There will be a wait, but you won't regret it, and you'll actually forget you had to wait. This is our new all time favorite! We are the toughest critics, so that's saying something.

This is an amazing little cafe. The parking is horrible. The lot is narrow and it's hard to turn around in if you have a large vehicle. However, WORTH the hassle because the food is amazing! I had a crab sandwich, and it was probably the best crab sandwich I've had in my life. This is a must eat in OBX.

After 6 days of trolling OBX - I think it's safe to say that this is place is littered with mediocre food. Most places seemed like they should be on Restaurant Impossible. Most places seemed to deep fry all their seafood. . . So. . .it was refreshing to find this place: Key lime pie, strawberry shortcake? Total winners. The desserts are tops here. Really, they are 5-star. My ribs were good, a tad over-salted. Maybe brined? Meatloaf? Best my wife has ever had, she says. Service? Tops. Super-friendly and helpful. Definitely one of the top 3 places we visited in OBX over the course of 7 days.

Kid meals were fantastic. We adults had 1lb of shrimp; awesome. The menu was extremely broad, something for everyone. My only regret is that our itinerary won't permit us to go back. It was offseason and the parking lot was full.

This place was a nice find at the beach. Very crowded. Luckily there was one spot open in the parking lot. It took about 25 minutes to sit us. Very nice interior. Darkish wood, nice decor. Food was excellent. I had the low country boil. It came out 5 minutes before the others, but was overflowing with food. I couldn't finish. My wife had the blackened tuna which was divine. Oldest son had a NY strip which was very tender. Kids had chicken tenders, bow tie pasta, and PB&J. I would definitely go back if in the area.

I ate here last week for the second time in 2 years. This time with a party of 5 (4 adults and 1 baby). They were very accommodating for our 1 year old. Service was excellent, just as it was two years ago. The food, excellent again, just as it was 2 years ago. We started off with the Spinach Dip to which my wife enjoyed the home made chips that came with it, and the backyard wings. Both were awesome. I love spicy food, to me the backyard wings aren't spicy, but for those who hate spice, there is a little kick, so watch out. For dinner, I had the Crab Cakes, they were awesome and just filled with lots of crab! My wife had the ribs, and the other adult members of our party had a chicken sandwich and also the crab cakes. They all loved it. For desert, a must have, and worth going there to just buy IMHO is the Key Lime Pie! The only bad thing about this pie is that any key lime pie you ever eat just wont even compare. I should mention that before having it two years ago I would prob. never order a key lime pie. We all loved it! Best place we ate during our whole trip to the OBX on both of our trips to OBX. Parking is tight and the wait is not short so be prepared, but its worth it. If the wait is that long, there's a Wings 3 blocks away, plan it out and go for a quick Wings run and buy some OBX gear. Killed our wait by 30 minutes.

ho-le-crap. where to begin...bit of a wait for a Thursday, but got in after a short wait at the bar. bartender was cool..said it wouldn't be too long and that they say longer than actually takes. got a table and started with wings, then gumbo. dinner we both had mahi with avocado salsa on cheese grits. dessert was key lime. wow on everything!! nothing fell short of expectations!

We ate here for my 40th birthday meal and I wasn't let down. Everything was delicious and the staff were kind, courteous and attentive. Even on the off season you may have a little wait but it is so worth it. Fabulous prices for the quality of food too.

We had a great meal and the service was amazing. Great staff who really cared. Our waitress and other staff were so attentive and kind. The sample of chili led us to share a serving, spicy for us but great with the generous side of sour cream. Lemonade was great, but the grilled mahi mahi sandwich was perfect. The fries were plentiful and the barbecue sauce was great on the fries. Hope to return again. Thanks.

I have been going to the Outer Banks for years now and never would have stopped in this place if it wasn't for someone trying to convince me they had the best wings I will ever taste. Spoiler alert: they have the best wings I have ever tasted. We stopped by for drinks and dinner one night while down there, the bartenders were amazing I can only remember Michael was one of them. He was great and recommended all the best things. I ended up getting the special that night which was orange glazed duck it was so so good and I got key lime pie for dessert which was also amazing and of course we got the wings as an appetizer. This place is definitely on my list of must eats while I am down there. And seriously, try the wings :)

A must-visit place. Went yesterday around 3:45 so it was in-between lunch and dinner. Several of their lunch specials were sold out. But, they had what we would have ordered anyway and THERE WAS NO WAIT! I had read that there wings were TO DIE FOR. Yes, they were. My friend had never really had wings and she thought they were delicious. For the main meal, I had their crab cake sandwich with fries. Very good. No filler. I think it was $12.95. My friend ordered the fried Tilefish sandwich. Instead of fries, she "up charged" and got a salad. I think that was $1.50 extra. The salad was nothing spectacular but her fish sandwich was very very good. Service was efficient. Bathrooms are clean. Go! But if you want to have your pick of all the specials, go early in the lunch time or early in the dinner time.

Its got the cool retro 50-60's diner feel. The grilled tuna sandwich I had was just awesome! Very tasty, and very good domestic beer deals during the day. The place was packed, so it can't be that bad!

I came here for dinner. Chicken wings were delicious. The best wings I've ever had. I split the fried shrimp and fish sandwich with my girlfriend, both were great. Finished the meal with a delicious slice of key lime pie. Would recommend to all. Very quick service and great food.

Popular for a reason. The food was 5 star worthy... The limited menu and the fact they were out of half the specials at 7pm on a Wednesday costs them a star. Seriously, there might be a half dozen entrees on the menu. That said, swordfish over cheese grits with avocado/tomatillo salsa AMAZING as was the soft shell crabs. Grits were stone ground cut....nice. Also had white pizza app, and for a Jersey guy with high standards for pizza dough, it was perfectly chewy with a touch of char
