Black Cat Burrito Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I checked this place out after reading some great reviews on Yelp. My friend and I were just passing through Boone and we were starving. So, we had lunch at Black Cat Burrito. I had a tofu and black bean burrito and my friend had steak enchiladas. For the price, you can't beat it! My burrito was huge and good, but not the best burrito I've ever had. The tofu was really good. The beans seemed a little undercooked. They put the salsa on top of the burrito, which made for a pretty presentation, but made the tortilla a little soggy and extra messy for eating. Despite these minor complaints, I scarfed down the whole thing. My friend really enjoyed his enchiladas and cleaned his plate. I don't get to Boone very often, but would consider returning to Black Cat Burrito on my next trip.

Great local staple of Boone. The spicier selections will make your next trip to the lou a memorable one. The burritos are huge and filling so, don't stuff yourself with chips and salsa. Get a tall boy peeber with your food and revel in your elitist white trash status.

Was recommended to come in by a local for the "best burrito in town," and I have to say I'm impressed. Just my kinda place, hole in the wall type atmosphere, plain wood top tables each one different unfinished concrete floor, odds-n-ends lighting, and classic rock playing on the radio, but quick service, huge portions, and very reasonable prices (a specialty burrito and a locally brewed beer cost $12). Flavors may be a touch "unauthentic mexican" but for a burrito joint in the mountains of NC... A+ Try the Ragin Cajun burrito(it's a lil spicy), and a Foothills Porter beer(if you like darker beers).

Fresh, made-to-order burritos, nachos, etc. Great vibe. Fast, friendly service and super yummy eats. Beer is cold and the salsa is hot!

YUUUUM! Not only does the Black Cat make a mean burrito but the atmosphere is fun. Loved the plastic toys instead of table numbers. I've only tried the "Don't be a jerk" chicken burrito and was a little wary of the pineapples but it turned out to be great when combined with spicy jerk chicken.

Black Cat Burrito is a fair attempt at Mexican food. Beware the quesadillas have rice inside and very little cheese. The salsas are mild. Their "hot" salsa was lacking some serious zip. They do have a wide selection of menu items. The concept is to build the burrito of your choice by allowing you several choices of ingredients. They also vegetarian options. Great idea! The choice of beers were excellent as well as the service. If you are looking for a decent meal at a great price this is the place for you. Do not come here is you are looking for authentic Mexican food. Ignore the décor of you are not into the Beatnik ambiance. One more thing, ask for your chips medium rare. Our chips were very well done. Overall, this place is a great value.

One of the most unique restaurants you're likely to try. Simple, cheap, and delicious. Although the kitchen crew can at times be verbally abusive to glossy-eyed Floridians and other brain dead tourists, you won't even notice because you've managed to get drunk for very little money on PBR. Order the Don't Be A Jerk and take to heart it's message and you should be fine.

I liked it, but didn't love it. I came here one night because I am new to town, its near my home, and it was 8:45 that night. I had looked at the Coyote Kitchen menu online earlier and thought this would be more convenient and possibly good as well. I'd say its convenient, cheap; eclectic and good. But, I wasn't astounded by it as others seem to be. I liked it--it just didn't knock my socks off or anything, and it is kind of a hole in the wall.

Black Cat is our go-to restaurant when we want a quick, non-fast food, healthy meal. Their burritos are very unique (think Philly cheesesteak, Greek, and Thai options) but they are so delicious. I always do a build-your-own, so that is always an option if you don't like their fixed menu items. Service is very quick. There is not much to this restaurant, but that is my favorite kind of restaurant--simple, but solid.

I'm a fan of southwestern/California-style mexican food; this place has it! Make sure to order the queso, it's divine.

Very popular spot in boone. It has a nice college vibe and the food is ordered at the counter and then brought out to your table and you get and refill your own drinks. They have a really good chips and salsa appetizer with three different and delicious salsas. I'm a big fan of the Philly cheese steak burrito and the cole slaw that comes with the burritos is one of the favorite.

I had don't be a jerk burrito. It came with a huge burrito coleslaw and chips. The burrito was great and spicy the slaw was fresh. The chips... Well the plate didn't come with salsa like every other Mexican restaurant I've ever gone too. $.75 cents if you want to enjoy your chips. Kind of a pricy menu to not include that. All together a good spot, a little pricy on the drinks and yes no salsa. Definitely an American spin on the burrito "tex-mex" still good but not authentic.

Grabbed a quick "to go" dinner at this cool place on the way through town. Neat & clean atmosphere inside. I ordered a "chicken wing" and my friend got a "build your own". Both were very fresh and a good size for the price. We each had a cold draft beer (about 4-5 on tap and a few bottles) while we waited for our order which came up quicker than we could finish our beers. We also had to check out there queso and chips. We both agreed that it was a good consistency and seasoned flavor. The slaw was fine, a nice accompaniment. Overall, worth the stop and we will go again.

I chose the "satay it to me softly" burrito. Bad decision. It was a combination of old, soggy rice, mushy frozen vegetables, 5 small bits of chicken, and some watered down peanut butter sauce. Not worth a dollar, none the less eight. Service was poor and staff went from taking money, to sweeping, to mopping, then to take chips out of the tortilla chip container, all without gloves or washing hands in between. Saw the kitchen staff wipe sweat off their foreheads, with their bare hands, while preparing food. 0 out of 10, would not go again

Awesome food, awesome service, awesome place. Absolutely love the location and is very similar to Wilmington famous flaming amys. Great environment with delicious food for an unbelievable price. Very satisfied.

I used to eat at Black Cat a lot as a student and coming back 10 years later they still hit the funky burrito mark. Service is at the counter and since students were on vacation we did not have to wait. My husband order the jerk burrito and and I got the Thai me up with shrimp. Both came with slaw and chips. I added a side of mango salsa which was a large amount for just 75 cents. Their mango salsa is fresh without being too sweet. My burrito was excellent. The sunflower seeds add a nice crunch. The raw spinach gave the burrito a freshness and they put plent of shrimp in it. My husband liked his burrito as well. The chips and slaw are good sides for the burritos. Prices are reasonable as well. We ate for under 20 bucks.

The Don't be a jerk burrito is not for the faint of heart, nor palate. It's big, full of rice and black beans and a ton of jerk seasoning. I chose chicken over the shrimp or tofu selections. Based on the flavor I think the shrimp would be really tasty also. Comes with slaw and tortillas, $11 with a tea (unsweetened). Order at the counter and pay when you come in. Menu, taped to the countertop, had an intimidating number of selections. 5 beers on tap ranging from Pabst (Boone is a college town) to Foothills Porter and Green Man Hopium. Only about 10 tables, a 6-seat bar, and lots of character. Can't wait to come back.

I did not have a good experience at Black Cat this time. The cleanliness of this place is not what I expect from a restaurant. The food is always pretty tasty, but on my last visit, I took a look through the kitchen. With a 90.0 health score proudly displayed in a duct tape frame, the place has gotten pretty disgusting since my first visit. This time when I came, there was garbage all over the floor, the menu I picked up was sticky, and the whole place had a steamy, humid, environment. Not only do they not wear gloves, but the cooks use rusty prep bowls, and don't wear hairnets or anything. The tofu in my burrito was also too soggy and was barely fried. Perhaps the most cringeworthy thing I saw is that they keep the chips in a rusted metal drawer in the bar area. When I watched the employee put chips on the plate with his bare hands (after touching one of the grubby toys they give out while you wait for your meal and not washing his hands) some of the chips fell onto the counter where the cooks serve the food. He shoved them back into the drawer to be served to guests. That just plain disgusted me. These kids just don't know how to safely prepare food and that concerns me. I don't hate black cat, but I won't be back for a while. Something weird is up with the drink machine too, as my gingerale tasted like straight up B.O. Not to mention, the service was mediocre at best. A place I once really liked is now becoming a place I will probably avoid.

Food is great. The selection of local craft beer is top notch. The reason for 3 stars: fruit fly hang out at the bar....they loved sitting on my pint of Hoppyum, I can't blame them for liking good beer. However, it was annoying. My kids got free kids meal so I ordered a side of chips. I assumed chips came with salsa and I was told that salsa was an additional charge. The staff was annoyed of my assumption, maybe informing the consumer of this at check-out would have been nice. Overall good food.

Three stars for the long wait. Burrito was Thai and tasty but took way too long. Did enjoy the big portion and couldn't finish one myself, that's for sure!

Went on July 3rd, I had a good experience before... So I wanted to go back. Went in around 3PM, when we ordered our food the server told us it "would be awhile" because they were backed up. This was ok, in a place designed like this (order up front, make burritos etc, get food delivered) I thought it would be like 20-30 min, it was an hour and ten minute wait to get a quesedilla and some nachos. I just think if they see people waiting and the food would be over an hour a nice thing to do is 1. Check in on them after 30 min 2. Offer some free chips/salsa 3. Get some sort of free food. It was ridiculous and it wasn't even packed (about 2-3 tables were empty)

My boyfriend and I recently visited Boone, NC for a short vacation. We spent the day walking around downtown and popped in to a bar for a drink and to check the game scores where we met the owner of this place. She recommended we check it out for dinner. She was super nice and fun to talk to and as a small business owner myself I like supporting other small business owners. I can't rate the food because we didn't eat here. The menu looked great and I was excited to try it out. I waited in line with my boyfriend for a while to place our order but I have an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue and extreme joint pain and often can't handle walking/standing for super long periods of time. He was next in line so I asked him if he minded ordering for me and I sat down at a table. (There were plenty of open tables and seats). A couple minutes later an employee came by, said he was the manager, and said that it was against their policy for me to sit down without having food. I explained the situation and that my boyfriend was next in their very slow moving line and he said he didn't care, that's their policy so that things "flow properly". The family in front of us in line were already at a table and the family behind us in line already had a table. Nobody else was looking for a table except people in the back of the line. He told me I had to get up and wait until I had food to sit down. I walked over to my boyfriend, a family who just walked in the door went over and took the table I'd be sitting at and other people behind us took every other table meaning that once we had received food we wouldn't have had anywhere to sit so we left. Horrid customer service from this employee. Horrid.

A great local, healthy dive. Good burritos, salads, tacos, and drinks. We built our own steak burritos and got the fish tacos and everything was great! The food was fresh and light. The slaw and chips that comes with the burritos was delicious. Good prices and way better than fast good Mexican. The eating area was nice and clean and so was the restroom. We will definitely be coming back!

Well, when you first walk-in it looks like a whole in a wall. Well, it actually is. Anyhow, the food is great & the prices are decent. They have really good burritos & you could also customize your own burrito. If you are feeling Mexican & want to grab a quick bite, this is the place. The ingredients inside the burritos are "gourmet" & it knocks Chipotle out of the water in comparison to ingredients. Black Cat Burrito is a little more pricier than Chipotle, but its worth the few extra bucks. The chips are okay & every burrito comes with slaw on the side.

Burritos were meh. Flavor were good but the steak was chewy. Chicken tasted like a dirty stove and the queso is really nacho cheddar. I tried their philly burrito and chicken burrito. They also won't make you tacos if you ask, so don't ask.

I've been visiting Boone my entire life and I've always wanted to eat at the Black Cat. I finally got the chance to stop by there for lunch today. They offer interesting and delicious burritos and an awesome selection of local craft beer. Their guac is delicious and the warm tortilla chips are on point. Super friendly service to top it off. Cool hole in the wall vibes and local flair make the Black Cat a Boone staple that everyone should try!

Upon reading reviews and checking out the menu online we opted to pop in here for lunch. Stepping inside it is a little dark but adds to the vibe of the place. They have a chalkboard with their select beers painted on the wall at the ordering station. You place your order and you get a random toy as your table marker...I thought it was kinda cool. They have a pop machine to serve yourself if that's what you got. Pick your drink, pick your table. There are various sizes of tables depending on your party size. Lots of vibrant art on the walls. Our group of 4....3 of us got fish tacos. The tortillas were grilled which gave a nice flavor to the taco. And the fish was blackened perfectly on the grill. Tender and flavorful. There was a ranch type sauce but the mango salsa made these fish tacos hit the spot. Also got the queso, guac, hot salsa and chips sampler.....queso was spot on. Had a little zip to it. The hot salsa could have been a little hotter but was super fresh and flavorful. You could see every ingredient present in the salsa. I don't do guac but was told it was awesome. For sure beats out a traditional Mexican place. Staff was also super friendly though they were moving fast on a busy Saturday afternoon. For sure would visit again!

Apparently a local staple. A buddy brought me here. Very casual spot. The food was good but NO PORK (my favorite) I got a beef burrito instead and woofed it down. So good I ordered another. Reasonably priced comfort food. Decent beer selection. Friendly staff. Recommended.

Food was ok. People were nice. Too much salt on chips and queso didn't have much flavor. Fish tacos were pretty tasty.

Every time we go to Boone, we consider eating at Black Cat Burrito but always decide to skip it for some reason. Well, we decided to finally take the plunge today and I must admit - for all the hype, I was pretty disappointed. My first observation was the sanitation score of a 90. Eeep. That's insanely disturbing, but I TRIED to overlook it and blame the building's age. The cooks definitely didn't look like the most sanitation savvy cooks -- no hair nets? Really? You obviously have longer hair...ick. The floor was sticky, everything had a grungy feel...not necessarily a good thing when your getting eating at the place. I get it -- it's a college, cool hangout....that's great. But it's also a restaurant where people eat --- it should be cleaned a little better. After waiting in line (which people seem to just jump ahead of you if you're at all polite and standing off to the side patiently), I ordered our food. I ordered the BLT because I'm a wimp and don't enjoy tasting really adventurous stuff...unless someone else is paying. I ordered one drink and a bean and cheese burrito...in addition to a Ragin' Cajun. The woman took my order and didn't seem very friendly, after swiping my card she shoved a sticky, grungy car in front of me. I obviously have never been to this dive restaurant before, so I had no idea it was a table flag for them to bring our food. Maybe had they been a little more friendly and tell people who aren't regulars, they wouldn't be inconvenienced with my stupid little questions. Just a thought.. My food was a waste of money. It was the BLT - go figure. Not really sure why it's called a "burrito" instead of a chewy tortilla wrap. The spicy mayo was blah - tasted more sour that spicy. The bean and cheese burrito I ordered was actually bean and rice. No cheese. No real flavor, until some of the salsa we ordered was spooned on top. The Ragin Cajun was flavorful and tasted great, despite the smallest shrimp we'd ever seen outside of a Ramen pack. We partially ate our food and sat there confused as to what we were supposed to do. Do we just leave our trays/plates? Is there a station to drop your dishes off? Who knows, and they definitely aren't gonna let you know.

I'm a senior at App and I have served as an ambassador since my freshman year, giving tours and also giving tips to parents and students for favorite local places to eat....Black Cat was always my top suggestion. However, recently the service, atmosphere, and food has been nothing short of disappointing. The last time I ate there I was served a soggy, tasteless burrito and to top it all off the salsa I ordered had gone bad. Seriously disappointing for me since this has always been my favorite place to eat in Boone. I hope they get it together soon.

I guess for young college students this pace is Ok but for the 50+ year olds like us, this place was a mistake. My husband had the nachos with cheese dip (looked more like a milky substance) and he also had the chicken burrito with black beans. Terrible, no flavor and hardly any chicken. It was more like a bean burrito. After eating this he had a colon cleansing like no other. I had the taco salad which was so, so. Needless to say that we'll never be back.

Love this place! I always get the don't be a jerk chicken burrito. It's very hot and spicy but so delicious!! It's in downtown boone so the decor and overall feel of the place is very chill I would highly recommend this place to anyone!

Good local american burrito place, good food, good price, anything can be made as vegetarian. Burritos, tacos, nachos, beer, and awesome. You pay up front and drinks are self serve so there's no waiting on a server. I love the Jumping Juan rice and beans plate. Add potatoes and corn and you've got two meals for sure. Good beer selection. Thai me up, Lessons of the Sage are also exuberantly delicious decisions for your tummy thing.

I had an conference to attend in Boone one evening. When it was over some friends and I were really hungry, so we asked a local where we could get a good bite for omnivores and vegans alike. We were directed here. I must say there is not a lot on the menu for vegans. Their rice has butter and their guacamole has cream in it. I did manage to get a pretty tasty black bean salad. My friends plates all looked well made and the food seemed very fresh. The beer selection was my favorite thing about the place. Quite a lot of beer at good prices. All and all a good place to stop for a bite and a beer.

Not a great experience for my crew. The food was waay to hot. Service was a bit rude once we identified our dissatisfaction with the food...(we were polite with our request for replacement food). Be warned the crew operating this establishment is young and have no PR skills. Burrito nazis? The sanitation is questionable. On a positive note,,they do host good music late night.

  • Heather B.

Meh...is all I thought. The burritos is nothing spectacular, and definitely isn't authentic Mexican. I think that this place gets a lot of good reviews just based of word of mouth & a lot of college students that may not appreciate real Mexican food. This was definitely Americanized burritos. Another thing, this place seems to be quiet grungy, and dirty looking back there in the kitchen. They also play very loud headbanger music in the kitchen & the ppl cooking the food looks questionably clean. I would rather go to a place that is more relaxing to eat, and have a real dining experience.

  • Trey M.

Great value. Although the burritos are big enough for two meals somehow I always end up with a clean plate. The fish tacos and the Don't be A Jerk are my favorites. BEWARE of the queso...it is liquid crack! Once you try it you will be hooked forever.

What a cool little spot in Boone. Stopped in last week while visiting my daughter. It was a late lunch so it wasn't crowded. Had heard good things about the "Don't Be A Jerk" burrito. I was not disappointed. Good flavors and I really liked the grilled pineapple. I asked for the spicy salsa and sour cream on the side. That was a good move. The burrito is rather large and it made it easier to just pick up and eat. I also tried the chips and queso. Very tasty! They also offer plenty of vegetarian options too.

Black cat holds a special place in my heart. I was 18 years old when I first experienced Black Cat in Boone. As a young freshman at App State I would save my money and go out once a month with friends to eat here! This place is exactly the same as it was 12 years ago (man, I'm getting old). The menus are the same, the food is the same, and the employees all seem like they are the same! The food is YUMMY! You can build your own burrito or order one of their specialty burritos. I've tried them all, but my favorite is the white trash bbq burrito. Spicy and delicious! All of the burritos come with a side of tortilla chips and cole slaw. The slaw isn't mayonnaise (y) at all. I'm not sure if it's vinegar based. It's delicious, though! This place is on the divey side, so if you're wanting an upscale experience, move on. They wouldn't want you anyways! Just kidding. But seriously, if you're visiting Boone or even if you go to App State and have never tried this place, eat here. It's local Boone at its best!

The best way to describe this location would be underwhelming. After hearing so much about how wonderful and amazing Black is, i was not impressed at all by the food. It was slightly better than your general fast food burrito but nothing great. The service was good and the food arrived quickly. The prices were reasonable but i would not eat out often considering i could buy the same level of food at better price around town. The place did look a bit grungy though and i do not see what the hype is about at all. Not bad not good just average.

Black Cat Burrito seemed like a good idea at the time... We stopped in at nearly 3pm on a Sunday thinking we'd hit that period where lunch wasn't too crazy. There were 3 people ahead of us in line, but at a burrito place, that wasn't too bad, right? Wrong. We waited for 50 minutes to get our lunch. Obviously something went awry in the kitchen and they were shortstaffed or something, but I was shocked that no one around was complaining, etc. (perhaps easy going Booners don't care?) We were almost in a blood sugar low coma when our thoroughly inefficient serverwho was texting part time and waitressing part time finally brought us our food, she THREW the plates on the table. In fact, she didn't just get our attention by throwing our food at us, but several tables around us asked what was going on and "Did she just throw that at you" and several laughs around. Seems like a 1 star experience right? Why so generous Jules? Well I had the Satay it to me Softly Burrito and it was delicious. It was truly a shame that it took so long. Their menu really is good. Perhaps I should give them another chance, which I would think about if the food just took a long time but it wasn't good enough to eat it with a side of attitude.

Super quick burrito joint that's very casual, fun and delicious. You will be given a toy to mark your table and your server will bring you the food. Other than that, it's all up to you. Stock up on napkins. The burritos are delicious and messy. I like the medium salsa the most on a ragin' cajun burrito. Very divey, great punk and rock shows after hours. I'm talking to YOU, freshman who's trying to figure out where the cool shit happens at night for 18+. Double check the flyer in the left window, bring $5 and enjoy some local music. No, you can't get food after 10 p.m., but the shows are worth knowing about.

Excellent food. I take people here every time I have a visitor coming into town. It's a regular choice for me - i.e., my go-to food joint for something affordable and delicious. You MUST try their fish tacos, but if those aren't for you and neither are their other options, keep in mind you can build your own burrito, nacho platter, or quesadilla. I always get the nachos and load them up. They run out of fish tacos on Fridays all the time so go early. I took my cousin who was visiting and they ran out although we were looking forward to fish tacos. She tried the nachos and was more than satisfied despite the fish taco issue. You won't be disappointed.

After reading about this place i was expecting it to meet or surpass any expectation however the food was a disappointment. My quesadilla was burnt and had rice in it (which made it taste super gross). My boyfriend sad that qdoba's burritos were better than the one he got there. The guacamole is really good but their queso tastes like its store bought and not fresh. Overall this place was disappointing with its guacamole being the only reason i would consider coming back, though i doubt that i will. The service is fantastic but the food was less so.

Spent a weekend in the mountains with some friends and made it around Boone and checked out some of the local spots. One thing I love about Boone is that it doesn't really seem like your standard college town. Has the appeal for tons of out-of-towners, locals, and collegiate types to enjoy most of the town. Heard great things about Black Cat, read some great reviews, tips, and with a hankering for a burrito, I had to oblige. It's a small, dark interior off of Depot, local art on the walls, some split level tables and booths, canned/bottled beer and tons of carb-loaded menu choices. I had heard whispers of the "multicultural" burrito concoctions, so I ended up choosing the "Don't Be A Jerk" burrito. Jerk chicken, rice, black beans, grilled pineapple, topped with salsa and sour cream. Wow. Talk about a flavorful combination. Subtly spicy, great char flavor, and the salsas were a fine complement. My only critique is that this it's a little difficult for a fork and knifer. The tortilla is pretty chewy, so get your sharp knife out if you can find one. I think next time I'd ask for the salsa and sour cream on the side so I could pick the bad boy up! The chips and queso are also a solid choice. Definitely worth the $4. If I'm ever in Boone again, I'm definitely headed here again for an early dinner or late lunch. So much food for a super affordable price. Love you, Black Cat.

For the price, this place is tops. Fresh food, creative selections, and quick service. The Thai burrito was amazing. I wish this was close to where we live-- we'd be regulars. **update- after we wrote this review, and ate our dinner, we decided to get another burrito, the Jerk, even though we wern't hungry. It was just as delicious cold the next morning before our bike ride. :)

Cute place. Got the fish tacos and was surprised how lacking in flavor they were. Maybe the burritos are where it's at... I'd try again if I was back in the area.

I really liked this place. Really cool art, and instead of giving you a number for your order they give you a large plastic toy. I had a fantastic chicken Satay it to Me Softly burrito. The ingredients were fresh right down to the delicious broccoli--which most restaurants murderously overcook, and topped with a Thai peanut sauce as good as most Thai restaurants. My date had the Philly cheesesteak burrito and it was out of this world. I'm not even a particular fan of the Philly cheesesteak sandwich in general, but this concoction was the best. There was a good beer selection, but a pint was served in a 10 oz plastic cup. A glass would be an improvement. As would table side service. But you can't beat the speed of service after you order.

Happened in while avoiding a passing rain shower. Fish tacos es bueno. Mama had the taco salad. Kid friendly and good beer selection.

I had to check this place out after reading the Yelp reviews. I have to say, lunch started out fairly sketchy, the place was pretty empty when we walked in, not a server in sight, and the restaurant was a bit on the college grunge side - not exactly "clean as a whistle" . She encouraged patience, not my strong suit, and after knocking on the bar, a server appeared from the kitchen. She had the Thai Me Up, I had the Don't Be A Jerk - absolutely one of the best damn burritos I have had at any price. FANTASTIC!!!!! Tasty, huge - she could not finish but half of her's!! If somebody would find a mop and spruce the joint up a bit it would be 5 star for sure. You have to try this place!!!!

If you decide to stay even if there is a wait it should be worth it! The burritos are fresh, delicious, and savory. The salsa is also fantastic and I love the mango the best. They also have a nice selection of drinks, too!

I don't know if they're any good or not, thanks to their terrible customer service! We're vegan, and did not order cheese on our "build your own" burritos. When everything came with cheese on it, they declared it our fault (even though the menu did not indicate cheese was automatic). They refused to correct the mistake, were loudly rude and we had to fight to get a refund.

Admittedly, the name drew me in. I have two black cats and one tuxedo cat as pets. I sat at the bar, where I discovered that there is no wine list. But, a white and a red Chilean wine are available for the affordable price of $6.00! I am not a wine snob, and the red was alright by me. I ordered the taco salad and was offered the choice of several different salsas. I requested "hot" because it makes me even happier than I appear. The romaine lettuce was fresh and topped with other vegetables, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, tortilla chips and the salsa. I ate it all! Great salad and good service. The only thing that I couldn't figure out is why the bartender did not give me the water I requested, just an empty cup. When I asked, he directed me to soda fountain attached to the side of the bar. The funny thing that I saw at the Black Cat was a little sign that said, "oh, Rexy, you're so sexy!" One of our black cats is named Rexy, and this made me think of his schmoozing way of getting food from our neighbors. Fat, cuddly cat who needs a treadmill more than he needs extra treats!

Luv this place. Place order and then it is delivered to your table. So many good burritos you cannot go wrong. My personal favorites are the Greek with tofu, thai me up and satay it to me. I want one right now!

Thai Me Up is my go to wrap here-- green spinach burrito, stuffed with spicy tofu, a peanut sauce, and spinach with a side of slaw and tortilla chips. It is really good and filling. They also offer free quesadillas for children, which is great. I cannot get past how sticky the floors are (this place opens up to music/bar in the evenings), they never appear to have been mopped. I also am kinda grossed out by the old toys that are given to you so that the server knows where to bring your food-- they are also sticky and dirty. I have never been brave enough to check out the restrooms. This is a good spot for a quick and inexpensive lunch in downtown Boone.

ohmygoodness After 6 hours in the car, my roadtrip partner and I were joking around saying we'd kill for some burritos, but were so hungry that we walked into the first open restaurant we could find. God was on my side, for we walked into Black Cat. Organic, fresh, local, healthy and YUMMY! Thai burrito isn't exactly mexican, but it IS delish. Next time I am in Boone, I am fueling up here!

The brotherly love burrito is just awesome. However don't show up too late on a weekend as they run out of food.

The chips and salsa are the best! Even though I could barely finish the huge burrito, I did not regret binging on the salsa.

Love love love! I'm not a huge fan of Mexican, but I will eat Black Cat any day if the week. Great and creative food choices, or you can build your own. Funky hole in the wall definitely worth going to! However, its a little pricey.

This place was loud and buzzing on a Tuesday evening with folks having fun at the bar and dining on burritos, quesadillas, chips and not-so-typical Mex fare. Students in my party were generally loving their made to order choices, but a long human hair spoiled my salad and the balsamic dressing tasted sour. But the thing that compels this writing is the nastiness of the place. There was standing water on the floor between the bar and kitchen area, where the walkway was slick with spilled food. No sanitation grade was posted, and the men's bathroom reeked, a stench one might encounter at a wayside gas station. Black Cat is a dive. -- Bob Williams

Amazing fish tacos, excellent and fresh ingredients in everything. Very pleased with this choice. Just enough chips to satisfy and a bit of fresh slaw to round out the plate. You might ask for extra salsa/pico to add a flavor boost to the main dish because it's that good. Finding parking can be a test of patience, but worth it if you are walking downtown. Convenient location and easy to find.

I came with a group of five from New Jersey and I am so glad we stopped by. The food tasted great and for an affordable price. I had the Jumping Juan. Filling and delicious, both for a low price. The environment is a little creaky. Some chairs and tables wobbled, but it's not such a big deal. We went to one of their shows that same night and had a great time. Super chill spot.

If you are ever in Boone, you MUST try Black Cat. I insist! The atmosphere is very chill but fun too. I'm not a huge fan of "mexican food," as it was described to me after I had already decided to go. So not being completely sure, I just had a bowl of beans, rice, and salsa. It was cheap, $3.75, so I wasn't breaking the bank for an iffy item. The service was faster than I expected and the table markers are absolutely hilarious. I was pleasantly surprised by my simple dish; it was spicy but I refused to stop eating until I was done. That's huge for me since I hate spicy food! The bottom line for this place is: just go at least once. The menu isn't too huge but varied enough that it might take a while to figure out what you really like. If you find that you're a fan, you can even get a sticker and put it somewhere for all to see. Now, one final note: I wasn't too keen on the spacing. I went for a surprise birthday party and we (a group of ten plus) were very uncomfortable trying to find a seating arrangement that would best suit the occasion. Therefore, four stars. When I go back I will probably be updating my review!

Not really "Mexican" even though they are burritos, but delicious anyway. It can be expensive if you build your own with any of the options because they charge per topping, but overall it isn't too pricey if you stick to the normal menu items. The burritos I often choose are the Greek or the Thai. This might have to do with the fact that my visits to Black Cat often happen after one of these two burritos has been haunting my dreams, but I have occasionally tried other things and haven't been disappointed. Eating in is very chill, it's self-service except for getting your food. I often pop in to order take out and they are always pretty quick with it....or maybe I just don't notice how long it takes because I have a tasty Foothills beer and a toy to play with? Music events are hit and miss here, it can be a little weird/empty or completely awesome. Definitely seen some strange things here, but I'll just leave the review to the restaurant side.

We started off with the appetizer sampler, (queso, guac, and salsa). They were all great. The fish tacos are awesome, be sure to put some of the mango salsa on them. The don't be a jerk burrito was delicious, but very spicy. Service was good. You order up front and they bring it out. We will definitely be coming back.

Cool Art and way, way more than Burritos, By the name we were expecting a Burrito Bar so we left, deciding to look around a little more to see what else we might like! This is a cool hangout, so if you want to see some of the cool locals check this place out!

Black cat is a staple restaurant in Boone. The burritos are quite good, and the salsa is great. Black Cat is important to Boone not only because it is a popular eating place, but a music venue as well. My only criticisms for Black Cat are that salsa does not come with the meals, it's often noisy inside, and there aren't any good beer specials. Even still, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visting the Boone area.

For the record: BCB serves only locally grown, free range, organic black cats. :) If you're looking for a typical Mexican burrito joint, keep walking. If you like eclectic fare with a side of awesome, come on in. BCB recognizes that a burrito can be filled with just about anything. I had The Bloke, which was stuffed with apples, bacon, and much more. My companions also had atypical insides to theirs. The ingredients of mine blended together a little too well, with the bacon and apples not really jumping out much as I would like. Don't let that dissuade you- it was a very good burrito. The bowl of gazpacho I had was quite flavorful, with perhaps the only complaint being it wasn't quite cold enough for what I expected. :) BCB has a small selection of good beers- and I was surprised there were no NC beers on the menu. I definitely enjoyed my visit to Black Cat, and I will more than likely return the next time I get up to Boone.

Black Cat Burrito is the real enchilada (excuse my Mexican food pun). But seriously, this place is worth seeking out. Went there for the first time this past weekend with some friends on a trip up to the Boone-area. I was familiar with their menu because I had eaten at it's sister restaurant, the Lucky Otter, in Asheville and I was very excited to try it again. For the less adventurous it may require stepping outside of your comfort zone in order to sample their unique and flavorful burritos (they aren't really burritos in the traditional sense in either their ingredients or flavor), but you will be patting yourself on the back (and stomach) once you take the first bite. I had the Thai burrito, complete with chicken, broccoli, carrots, cheese, onions, rice, all wrapped up in a spinach tortilla and topped with a peanut sauce. An absolute pleasure with every mouthful. The slaw that comes on the side is also very fresh and bright, which just adds to the already pleasant dining experience. Also, the Black Cat gets big points for their beer selection. Good (and local) beers on draft which will always get you a favorable recommendation in my book. All in all, a really good and original place to eat. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area again, and would highly suggest others do the same.

Let's first just establish the fact that I dream about Black Cat's food...I crave it...and I hate that I moved away from Boone and haven't had any in forever! Don't walk in and expect traditional "Mexican" food, though...that's what Los Arcoiris is for down the road...this place has a unique, creative twist on everything...they even give you a child's toy instead of a number for delivering the food to the tables. Now, down to business...the portion sizes are generous, their plethora of ingredients always taste fresh, and it's a great local "dive" hangout...and oh the chips...they're appropriately salty and oh-so-delicious when they're warm and dipped in queso or mango salsa. Don't let the slightly darker and small interior of the restaurant turn you off from trying one of Boone's hidden treasures for food and live music...this very well may be my first stop next time I head up there for a visit!

I wish we could give 1/2 stars! Stopped in before an App State football game for some to go tailgate food. I ordered the brotherly love w/steak and she ordered fish tacos. Based on the brotherly love steak burrito, I would have rated this higher. It was flavorful, sloppy, spiced nicely and had lots of steak. The meat was tasty and not tough. The fish tacos... First the menu, the Yelp link and all say "Three grilled tilapia tacos with lettuce, tomato, & ranch dressing. served with chips, slaw & mango salsa." 1. No chips and salsa. 2. The "mango salsa" was basically chopped tomatoes with a little cilantro and maybe 6 or 8 small pieces of mango. No mango flavor, tasted like chopped tomatoes. 3. And this is the kicker. only got 2 tacos. As I said above, all indications were we would get 3. This was my 3rd or 4th time at BCB, food is always pretty good. The misleading info and lousy mango salsa sucked though. I'll go back, and I WILL say something.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
