Our friends brought us in last night for cocktails and we felt like we were at home. Sandy and Stephen - the owners were wonderful. Unfortunately we had already had dinner so I can't rate the food. If the service from the owners and friendliness of the waitstaff is any indication, I'd bet the food is top notch.

Great service and drinks, a more formal place. Excellent starters and fish dishes. Nice looking place good for special occasions and dates.

Lovely meal here. Staying at Kandahar Lodge, where the cafe was too chi chi for my 11 and 12 year old. Stopped at mcgarrys roadhouse because we liked the exterior. Service friendly, thoughtful, and fast. Had anniversary dinner here with kids and hubby, delicious tender mini filet, sinful potatoes, ranch salad, husband had house salad, salmon, moist with really great carrots. 11 year old Daughter happy with plain buttered pasta, son and the rest of us not wowed by bison meatloaf, but that was the only dish we didn't love. And the prices were very reasonable for the high quality of the food. Very fresh produce.

We had the phyllo pastries which came with a curry yogurt sauce which was not good. The kids butter noodles had burnt butter in the bottom if their bowls. The Pad Thai was too salty with little flavour and mushy noodles. The porterhouse pork was a OK, the sides of rice and slaw were not good.

So let's talk about McGarry's. I'll call this review 4.5 stars (and round it to a five), as there are just a few minor issues, overall. It would be helpful to note that I've eaten excellent places, of all sorts, nationwide. New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, Raleigh/Durham, St. Louis, Orlando and Internationally. So when you read this review, take it into account. I generally only rate places I like, unless I feel a restaurant is massively overrated. We arrived for dinner after making reservations. The bar was full, and so were tables. It took a second for us to be welcomed, and I realized later, it was because the lady who was to seat us was also busily making drinks. I'm a bit on the high strung side, so waiting anywhere, for anything generally makes me a bit anxious. That didn't happen on this occasion. We were graciously told that our table was occupied, and to have a seat at the bar. I had looked up the menu online, and was slightly confused by the Asian offerings on the menu. If well executed, I knew we'd would be in for a treat. It was. The chef/owner here obviously refuses to dumb down the menu, which I am thankful for. Just a note: If you're one of those brilliant people who feels the need to ask the kitchen to "Please leave off x or y." And then complain that your dish isn't up to snuff, I don't think this is the place for you. This is good food, made with above average ingredients. It ain't Taco John's. I got the Bison Meatloaf, because if you're mixing Bison with Chorizo, it's either going to be a complete disaster, or fantastic. Turns out, it was the latter. Paired with the mashed potatoes, it is some of the best comfort food I've had. I hate to use words like "elevated", but they sure managed to take the meatloaf to another level. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the chef wanted to call the meatloaf a "terrine", because it's closer to that consistency than most meatloaves you might otherwise order. Moist, flavorful, smoky, spicy...and good. I'll avoid using profanity to express myself. My wife ordered the ribeye. It was expertly seasoned, it was cooked to perfection, and more tender than a "USDA Prime" advertised ribeye I received at a vaunted Minneapolis steakhouse the other night. Such a good steak. Really, among the top five I've ever had. The server suggested the Huckleberry Martini over a Cosmo. My wife had two. Two, really, really good Martinis, excellently blended by a person I understand is a co-owner. The waitstaff was attentive, if overextended. If the owners read this (and I half hope they aren't reading Yelp, and are just focused on execution), then that is one area I'd say improve a bit on. They need a runner/general duty person on front-of-house for busier nights. Maybe they usually have one. I don't know. But that would have definitely greased the wheels. Overall, a fantastic meal and a really good evening out. Highly recommended.

Excellent service, Excellent food! We were just finishing up a trip eating at many fine dining establishments throughout Alberta Canada and this was our last stop, but the BEST FOOD we had on our trip, even compared to the Fairmont Hotels in Lake Louise and Banff and the Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Our server Mitch, made several recommendations, which were all fantastic! The Ribeye was excellently prepared and seasoned, the trout one of the best trout dishes ever and the Poached Salmon special was delicious! Mitch addressed us by name and provided excellent service. Sandy and Stephen have come up with a friendly establishment, with great food for every budget. We will be coming back every time we visit Whitefish!

We stopped by for dinner recently on a Saturday evening. It was my daughters birthday so we were celebrating. Surprisingly they weren't busy. We tried a myriad of things and it was all very good. I ordered a New York strip and it was delicious. My daughter and I split the dinner and they charged $7.00 to do this which was a rip considering we ordered a ton of appetizers. This place is good with excellent service but not a cheap place to eat at all.

What an unexpected menu! When I saw Roadhouse in the name, I was expecting steak, rolls, and peanuts on the floor, not a fine dining experience. First, the service was fantastic. We were greeted and seated right away by the owner. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and answered all of our questions, obviously very knowledgeable about the menu options. The menu is diverse, and the list of specials was probably just as long as the regular menu. Our table had the halibut (amazing, with a delicious peanut sauce), steak, pork chop, mountain noodles, smoked chicken alfredo, and a kids quesadilla with mac & cheese. All our dishes were perfectly prepared, with amazing accompaniments. My husband, who usually isn't a fan of fried food, ate every last french fry that came with his steak--they were amazing. (Lol, I just told him that I was writing a review, and he said his mouth is watering;) Our only regret about our visit is that we were too full to try the apple pie that sounded incredible. Planning to go back for some of that!

I have to admit, our family came here for a nice meal, and I was extremely impressed. The steak I had was amazing. I have literally been craving it since going, and that has never happened to me before. It was cooked perfectly and the juices coming of the steak were so good. We are planning to go again here soon.

The steak was pretty good, nothing to write home about though. The reason for the low rating is because the service was terrible. Our waiter didn't check on us (maybe for a drink refill?) even once, and had quite the attitude to boot. For the price, you can get much better service and food.

A sad Whitefish discovery. I had the halibut special, dry and over cooked. She had the calf liver, smothered in a heavy sauce. One kid had the fish-n-chips, it was perfect. The fish was moist & flaky, fries crisp and tatery. The other kid had mac-n-cheese, it wasn't from a box, not was it spectacular. It was OK. Service was disappointing. We had to wait for the initial service. The appetizer came with the entrees. We had to ask for the dessert menu, and then were given the check prior to asking if we wanted anything. To offset the $28 dry halibut, we were "given" $8 worth of kids ice cream. If you go, stick with the fish-n-chip and beer, pass on everything else. A sad expression for a $100 bill...

Disappointing! This restaurant was recommended by a local and we were craving a really good meal after spending a week in the park eating dehydrated food. Service over all was good and wine list decent but the food left a lot to be desired. The phyllo appetizer with curry sauce tasted like something out of a frozen food section from the grocery store and the crab cakes were mushy. Both fish dishes were bland but the biggest disappointment was an issue we had with the ribeye steak. My friend and I both ordered it medium rare. His was well done and tried to pick out the good parts (no one likes to complain) until finally we made him raise the issue after he tried mine (which was actually seasoned/cooked to perfection - best dish out all all). The waiter said the owner put him in charge to take care of it and we naturally thought the rest of the inedible dish would be comped since the waiter offered to re-fire (we decided to just share my dish). He made mention the dessert was awesome- 4 of us shared the brownie and requested an extra scoop of ice cream (which was really great). Got the bill. No comped steak, not even a comped dessert drink- was comped the $9 dessert (didn't even comp the $3 extra ice cream scoop). We are a pretty easy going group but were pretty furious that we paid for that steak ($38!!). If you only have one night in town, I don't recommend this place.

My boyfriend and I sat by the bar by the kitchen and struck up a conversation with the owner/chef. He was not the most talkative guy, but boy did he really take good care of us!! We ordered elk chili and bison meatloaf & mashed potatoes because we don't see many elk or bison dishes in Seattle. I thought elk chili had a wonderful flavour and bison meatloaf was HUGE! The chef threw some samples (Israeli couscous and some chicken and dumpling soup) at us. We had a fantastic time trying out all kinds of different flavours and textures. What I really loved most was their bread pudding. The creme anglaise had such a strong taste of alcohol (rum) in it, and I LOVED it!! The bread pudding was super moist and had plump raisins in it. My boyfriend and I devoured it even though we were completely stuffed. I'd like to try different items on the menu when I go back!

Pleasant restaurant and good service, but both I and my dining companion found our salmon and halibut unflavorful and poorly seasoned. We both said that we would never Idententify what we were eating if we were blindfolded.

Great service and delicious food with generous servings. We had a party of 10 and across the board everyone raved about the food. The Bison Meatloaf I had was great as were the Sinful Mashed Potatoes that were the side. We will definitely be dining here again the next time we come to town.

If you want fish prepared to perfection this is the place to go. I ordered the salmon and my wife the halibut. The fish was so good we shared each other's meal. This is a place for diners not fast fooder's'

We were visiting and this restaurant was recommended. The setting is fabulous with a nice menu. Terrible service. Also one of our dinner was pork and was not cooked thoroughly. Waitress told mgr yet no one addressed it with us. They were not concerned with our satisfaction at all

While off the beaten path of downtown, McGarry's is a great restaurant with one of the best of the very best bartenders in town, Sandy. Her husband Stephen runs the kitchen and produces some great food with an often Asian twist (though McGarry's is not an Asian restaurant, per se). Their large booths makes the restaurant one of the intimate places in Whitefish, but go sit at the bar, have Sandy make you an amazing martini and enjoy a great dinner.

We went to this restaurant because it was across the street from the Good Medicine Lodge where we stayed. This was probably the worst meal of our two week journey. We were two couples and had problems with three of the four dinners. When the meals were delivered we were told that the Fish & Chip dinner had fallen on the floor and was being replaced. The Shrimp Pad Thai came with no sauce at all. After this was questioned the waiter came back with hot sauce. The Smoked Chicken Penne had chicken pieces so small that they were hard to find. Will say that the Big Mountain Noodles & Vegetables were good. The thing that really got me was this. The Ketchup bottled would not pour so the waiter said let me show you how to do this. He picked up a spoon on the table and proceeded to stick the handle up into the bottle. That worked, but I am not sure the handle of a spoon is the most sanitary device to use. All in all for a Fine Dining Restaurant we were very disappointed.

Highly recommend! We had the Caesar salad, shrimp pad Thai, and a ribeye steak (special of the day). All was delicious! And the house Cabernet was very nice. Last, but not least was a chocolate brownie with salted caramel drizzled over home made vanilla ice cream. Did not leave one morsel of that dessert behind! Excellent service too.

As good as it gets in Whitefish - for culinary sophistication, quality/value, service and decor/atmosphere. Lots of seating choices...we loved the open kitchen area. The owner was cooking the evening we were there and engaged us - asked if we enjoyed our meal. He was classy and professional and didn't push himself on us. The menu highlighted the mashed potatoes as "sinful" and they were!! The server was knowledgeable on the food and wine menus. We asked for suggestions and she gave them - and they were all good to fantastic. We ordered the steak, crab cakes, ranch salad, and coleslaw.

Went in there late in the evening with a friend. They didn't have a full menu because it was late but we got served eventually. I say eventually because how long does it take to cook a steak and prepare a side-salad with the restaurant nearly empty. You would think they would be faster. When the food arrived it was only so-so. The cut of beef wasn't much better than average and the vegetables were rather bland and over cooked. The waitress was chatty and somehow unprofessional and annoying. My friend and I agreed it was a pretty nice ambiance but the food didn't match in quality nor did the service. What really amazed me was how expensive this was for montana. I have eaten at a lot of places around the state and this one was the highest. I think it came to over 40 bucks for just myself and no wine. We did have a dessert but still it seemed out of line more like big city prices. Probably very few locals eat there. In conclusion - don't judge a book by it's cover. In this case the cover looks great but once you get to the "meat" of the issue (the meal itself) you might be disappointed and doubly so when that bill comes. Shame on you McGarry's for overcharging for mediocrity. The only reason you get one star is because there is no option for none.

On vacation from California, we stopped here per recommendation of a friend who moved to Whitefish, MT a few years back. We were blown away!! The food was excellent, staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, and on top of everything service-wise. We were seated outside- highly recommended, weather permitting. The menu was definitely unique- a blend of Asian fusion and classic dishes; but don't let that scare you- they were very, very good. I had french onion soup to start and the Pad-Thai as the entree. It was the best Pad-Thai I've ever had! Other's in the party had the petit filet and the crawfish special; both were very delicious and cooked as ordered. As for the price- it wasn't particularly pricey coming from Southern California, especially for the food and service-- and no sales tax to boot! Highly recommended from a man with a taste for fine cuisine.

Early August 2009. Great atmosphere, good wine list, and great food. Our server seemed a bit rushed (too many tables?), but was mostly attentive. Great mix of Asian, American, French, Italian and more. 5 in our party, we each had something different and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend McGarry's if you're in Whitefish.

Looking for somewhere to eat? DON'T. EAT. HERE. My family and I were visiting Whitefish for about a week. I yelped for some good restaurants in the area and came up with McGarry's. Although there were a good number of 1 stars... I chose to ignore it and read the 5 star reviews. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. We tried to go on Monday... it was closed. So, being the persistent family that we are, we went again on Tuesday. We have a family of 7 so we had to get a big table. Before our waitress sat us down she dropped all of the menu's on the floor. THEN SHE PUT IT ON OUR PLATES. I'm sorry but I don't like putting my food on a plate that might or might not have traces of dog feces on it. Needless to say, I was appalled. From previous reviews I read that their Wok dishes and Fish n' Chips were to die for. I ordered the Fish and Chips... but what? THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY. so okay whatever but then they didn't have any of the Wok dishes... now... are you kidding me... you should put that in the front of the restaurant and let people know before leading them on thinking they're gonna actually get good food. So I ordered the Curried Chicken... can't mess up on chicken... right... So it took around an hour and a half to get our food out. Because we had a table that was in a corner, it was a challenge to get the food to us. The waitresses had us pass our food to each other. I felt like I was in a cafeteria. Half of my chicken was burnt. My cousin's burger was so greasy, I could see the grease coagulating on his plate while he tried to finish it as soon as possible. My uncle's enchilada came out cold. And everyone else's food was, at most, mediocre. By now, I'm looking around thinking," Why would someone give this place a 5 star rating?!" but I wasn't going to complain because it was both of my uncle's birthdays. We told our waitress that it was their special day and she said ok :) Her smirk said it all. She came out with two EMPTY bowls that had a candle in it. Then she says OH HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! This is our calorie free dessert! *cue another smirk* We looked at the bowls and were like... what the heck... did they just give us a candle in a bowl for their birthdays? We all ordered entrees so it's not like we cheaped out on them. How much does it cost to even put a scoop of ice cream in there? like 20 cents? or even a BREATHMINT?! I would hate to think that it was racially motivated but I feel 99% sure that it was. Then, to top off the night, she included in the bill a 20% gratuity tip. I'm sorry but did I miss something. You gave us a candle for their birthdays. You didn't help all night. YOU MADE US PASS OUT THE FOOD, which, sucked btw and yeah, you don't deserve a tip at all. That was kind of a slap in the face to be honest. And even though we gave it to you, you didn't deserve it. AT. ALL. Basically this place is a blow. I would never recommend it to anyone. I was highly disappointed and I wanted to throw all of their breathmints in my bag and run out. Our service was horrible, she was stuck up and rude the whole dinner. Oh but there is 1 good thing about this restaurant: The toilets are clean.

Betsy, the owner of Good Medicine Lodge across the street, hyped this restaurant to us and we decided to give it a try. They have a beautiful dining room, also an open grill kitchen area with booths. They seated us in the kitchen area. It was a warm night, and I could feel heat radiating off the ovens and grill. It was noisy, too, and very unpleasant. I did not enjoy my meal--skirt steak over Caesar salad. It was not very good. I don't know why they seated us in the kitchen area. If we had had kids with us, I would have been more understanding. There were empty tables in the nice dining room when we came in and also when we left. The tab came to almost $100.00 for two and I felt it was very, very over-priced. I felt very angry with the owner of the Good Medicine Lodge for advising us to eat at McGarry's. It was horrible.

Some of the reviews from the past are crazy and a little harsh! The owner and bartender, Sandy is awesome! The food is a little spendy but good. I have found good service in Whitefish is hard to come by, so many bartenders and wait staff are short (not in height) and rude because they assume you are tourists.. (?) you can count on great food and great service here. The brussel sprouts are amazing!

  • Rowdy B.

I hate to do this after the other reviews but I have to. We arrived and were given a table right away, I ordered a cocktail and my date stuck with water. I ordered the fish and chips and she ordered smoked chicken penna. Our food arrived promptly and taking our first bites I realized it wasnt going to be a good one. My fish was bland and the fries were cold, her dish had to many ingredients to be good and there was a slimmy piece of chicken skin in it. The wait staff were great and the atmosphere is awesome but the food is not recommended. They did comp our meal but I felt bad and left the waitress a nice tip.

So, I read some reviews for this place (by the way, being from "the bay" doesn't really mean anything up here...) and I was hesitant to try it. But, I was pleasantly surprised. I realize that it may not be the best place in Whitefish, but it is definitely not a bad place. Not worth 1 star or anything... We got appetizers only, since it was already pretty late and we just wanted to get home. But they were quite good! We ordered the stuffed philo dough triangles, which were admittedly a little weak, the "spiders" and the fresh morell mushrooms. Holy crap the mushrooms were amazing!!! Seriously, they were totally awesome and I'm tempted to go over there tonight to get them again since I'm thinking about it again. Anyway, the chef (Steve i think it was) ordered something like 26lbs of the stuff and he says they'll have them for most of the early summer, so look out! I'm going to get me some more! Like I said, we didn't have any entrees, but they looked pretty good as well. I'd say its worth checking out, not as good as Tupelo... but still good.

My husband and I had high hopes for this restaurant, and unfortunately, we were disappointed. The staff was too busy to chat with us, the food was good but not great, the owner was polite but not overly friendly or attentive. The ambiance is great- but it's a pricey restaurant so I need more than just ambiance.

On recommendation from the owners of Good Medicine, and it being within walking distance from the B&B, we decided to schlep across the street to this upscale restaurant. Perhaps we ordered the wrongs things, but the flavor of almost every single item was slightly off, and certainly didn't justify the price. I ordered a noodle dish with vegetables and tenderloin beef. The beef was fatty and flavorless, and the rest of the dish was something that I could've ordered at a neighborhood Chinese takeout joint for $7. I think McGarry's charged us $17 for it. Overall, I wasn't impressed by the Asian-inspired cuisine, although the restaurant had great decor and the I might give it a second chance if I could.

Whitefish, Montana: the menu was definitely an unique-blend of Asian fusion, classic dishes and wild game (Elk, Deer, Pheasant, Bison, etc). Everything we tried was truely delicious and cooked to perfection and exhibiting outstanding plating. The wine list was outstanding but expensive... We met the owner / chef and had a tour of the kitchen. We were very impressed! We will be back when we visit Whitefish again.

We went here last night and I ordered the cashew chicken dish. It was amazing! A little heavy on the sauce, but it was good. The dinner salads were good and my friend ordered the pasta dish and he was please. I thought it was a very new and nice restaurants. I am not too sure why there are so many bad review

Been there, done that! Don't feel the need to go back. We were there with friends from out of state and they wanted a great "Montana" steak. We waited for a while before they came and told us the chef was hand cutting the steaks and it would be a bit longer. After over an hour after we ordered, we got our food and although it had decent flavor, our steaks were tough, overcooked and much smaller than the description on the menu. Service was slow and non-attentive. Would have been nice to have our drinks refilled with the amount of time we sat there waiting.
