Our favorite sushi spot in town. The service is rad and the food is yummy :) Often, you don't even have to order because your waiter will over hear what you want from across the room and have it in front of you before you even remember to order.

Love it! Have been several times now & have not had a bad experience. The staff is super friendly.

Ok-- so I HAVE to review this. It has 3 stars-- and most of the 3-star reviews are saying 'it's good'. ...To me, 3 stars is a place to avoid. If you like something-- you rate it well. That being said--- I went with a small group (6 total) to dollar sushi night. It wasn't too busy, and we delayed while waiting for someone stuck on the other side of town. Despite the long wait-- we got our platter VERY quickly, and it looked very well presented. I had never had sushi before, and was quite hesitant. A friend walked me through which ones didn't have any fish, and I was able to eat my selection (dipped in soy and wasabi, with a little bit of ginger) and it was a wonderful experience. The atmosphere is very nice-- busy and cheerful. All the waitresses and waiters were very nice, the service was quick with each round, and we will be going back.

Sushi Hana is borderline offensive. The sushi is unimpressive unless you like beard hair in your rolls. Last Saturday the service was really bad. Like, a server no-showed for their shift bad. At 8pm on Saturday night there should be more than one server working. I felt bad for her, but no one else in the restaurant jumped in to help out. There were no managers or bussers, unless those were the people making the food. Our roles took over 50 minutes to come out, and they didn't even ask us what we wanted to drink. There was a dark beard hair in one of my roles from the bearded sushi chef. I don't mind hairy dudes, but beard hair is one step up from a pub in my book. Its just gross. On top of that, the roles were bland. Except for one of the specialty rolls that was spicy - that on was excellent. The other roles just offended me: too much money for such a blah product that I waited almost an hour for. For what you pay, the value is not reciprocated. Unless you like beard hair.

We came here after having to leave Plonk across the street because they couldn't make a simple substitution. The server was great about knowing the menu and what had my spouse's allergens and what didn't. I was expecting the prices to be a bit lower than they were. Overall, the sushi was pretty average, with standout performances from the Lady Killer (marinated tuna with avo) and the Rock and Roll. I could eat four rolls of the Lady Killer to myself, it was so delicious!

Okay. Lets get the baseline set before the rest of the review. We are in the middle of the USA and the only way Sushi could be fresh is if it is flown in. Period. If you really think you are going to get the best sushi in a land locked location, thousands of miles from the ocean, you are high. So. We are in town for the week and decided that moving here was going to be awesome. Therefore it is our duty to scope out the best that Missoula has to offer. Last three things on our list are Japanese, Chinese and whatever else we really stumble upon. Boom. Sushi Hana. The other reviews are correct, took no time to get seated, but forever for anything to be brought to the table. The staff was super friendly and I did notice that there were some fellow Japanese people on deck besides myself. Once the warm water hit our table, we were ready to rock and roll. Our server was very informative and to our surprise, we stumbled in on "Dollar Sushi Night" - big mistake. You never go on a special night and expect the best the restaurant has to offer, and is the only reason I am considering going back. We ordered at least three of everything (Three in the group) and kicked back and waited. Nearly an hour later, we got three of everything. Everything to this point would have kept Sushi Hana at three stars... But. The ONE thing that NO self respecting Asian restaurant should ever have is stale or frozen rice. Every single bit of sushi or sashimi was served on stale or previously frozen rice. How do I know this? Because it is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Make too much rice? Bag it up, freeze it and it stays relatively fresh and is ready to rock and roll after a few seconds in the microwave. . Which is fine for home... but in a restaurant that you are paying MONEY for? (- 1 star) GTFO. Now when I started to notice this... I looked down at the California Rolls that my white company were aptly sucking down. There wasn't any fake crab in them.. Do I look like a horse? Am I paying for cucumber rolls? I patiently waited for our server to come over and asked him where the meat was. He pointed at it, so I grabbed the roll he was pointing to and promptly unrolled it. There was a piece of fake crab in it about the size of what I would find stuck in my teeth. (- 1 star) I was done at this point. I got over the fact that the Tuna we ordered was a shade of brown, or the yellow tail was turning greyer than a morgue all star, but once you start stiffing customers on FAKE crab and using undercooked or stale or leftover or frozen rice, or all of the above, I am done. I paid my check. Any moron reading this through would have realized that three minus two would have found you at one star, but at the last possible moment, the server came back and apologized for the California Rolls and took them off my tab. Plus one star. Guys. Get your self respect back and throw the rice away at the end of the night, we know you are reusing it. Your ginger tastes like it freeze dried and dehydrated. Ginger should not be dark brown. Ditch the dollar sushi bullsh*t. When you get an order of fish, chop it up into portions and flash freeze it, you can pick up a food packaging device at Costco for cheap, and use it when it is needed. Last but not least, don't skimp on the cheapest aspect of the business, imitation crab. You can get bags of it online, delivered frozen to you for pennies on the dollar.

It's just a fun place to go for lunch. I'm not really a sushi fan, but they have other things on the menu. The entire staff is friendly. I go because it's conveniently located next door and they are quick.

Best sushi in town. Consistently the worst service though. I go on average 2x a month on dollar night (wed nights), it is way to expensive any other time. The servers take your order and forget about you, the food takes no less than 30 minutes to get out, and forget about drink refills or seconds, that will take another 30-45 minutes to get. Despite all this you cant beat the variety they offer and the flavor beets out Nara on reserve any day. And they even have a kid friendly platter for the finicky ones :)

This is not authentic sushi or even remotely close. You don't have to live close to the ocean to have great sushi...but this place gives land locked sushi joints a bad name. Our service was the only good thing about our experience here. The rolls were small and badly made. The fish did not seem at all fresh or perhaps it was the quality. Best to go somewhere else for sushi. Their miso was good and the service was as well-that's all I've got for a positive experience.

Best sushi in missoula. Can be busy most week nights so be patient... Well worth the wait. Bodega bay is my personal favorite. Wednesday is dollar sushi night starting at 5:00.

Ambience is eh, all tables no booths. Over priced with small portions. Our server was nice but the food was slow and there were only four tables being served at the time. Seaweed salad was average but not large enough for two people. Sushi was good but I wouldn't come here again.

I have been eating at Sushi Hana for many years, as well as worked there in the past for numerous years, and love their rolls; they are innovative, fresh and delicious! Not only are the rolls good, their tempura is tasty and delightfully crispy. Sushi Hana also has many appetizers worthy of trying as well; my favorites include the ahi crisps (crispy wontons topped with ahi, soy, tobiko, green onion), crispy tuna (ahi wrapped in seaweed, katsu fried, served with katsu sauce on the side), sesame chicken, hamachi-kama (cheek of the yellowtail, grilled, served with delicious sauce on the side) and ika-batayaki. Their sunamono is to-die-for...I have never had one anywhere else quite like it... Now onto the sushi....my favorite rolls are: Killer, Red Sun, Rock & Roll, Cali Girl, NY Maki, Dragon's Fire, Sushi Tempura, Bodega Sunset with Fresh Sake instead of Smoked, Gilroy, Bodega Bay, Hot Moon, Crazy Horse...and the list goes on and on...like I said, everything is good if you love sushi. My only dislikes: the nigiri pieces are cut too small and the prices are a bit steep... Avoid Monday and Wednesday nights if you don't like busy crowds because they are dollar nights...Monday offering more than just sushi for a buck... Tip: Ask for a side of sunset sauce...it's delicious and wonderful with any roll!!! For a delightful ending, try the Banana Tempura for dessert.

By FAR the worst sushi I've ever had! Sushi was old and mushy. Ordered a sashimi assortment and 50% was and edible garnish. Besides the imitation crab... Salmon tasted like bologna. No wonder the place was empty.

  • Jose R.

It's an ordinary sushi joint nothing really spectacular at all. Well except the waitress she was very attractive. The specialty rolls were very small for its price. The Chirashi bowl was very good though and full of plenty of sashimi. I would only go there if I was in a mood for sushi and it's the only thing close by.

  • Caleb H.

    1) The good: nice atmosphere and service was excellent. I went for $1 sushi night and it was affordable. 2) The bad: the food. The nigiri was TINY and the fish was in very small pieces and not fresh. Dare I even say a little mushy :-( the salmon was good as was the spiced baby octopus but those were the only exceptions. The tuna was marginal and the rest was just bad. 3) Bottom line: I might return and try some specialty rolls to see if they are any better but I won't be going out of my way. And I won't be back for $1 sushi.

  • Tristan N.

Overpriced and tiny portion. Not sure what the fuss is all about this place!

  • J D.

I give it 4 stars for the atmosphere, but 2 stars for the food. I've been here a few times for dollar sushi night. I think the tempura vegetables are probably the best thing on the dollar night menu. The sushi itself is mediocre. The rolls themselves are TINY. The sushi rice actually leaves a lot to be desired. Gummy is definitely not a good quality. The fish isn't terrible or anything, but not great. The unagi wasn't bad though The atmosphere is pretty ice, and the service is alright. Every time I've ben the music has been loud, though. Not a great place for conversation for people who have trouble hearing in crowds. I'd probably go back on dollar night, though.

Great dollar sushi menu on Mondays and Wednesdays. I spend less than 10 dollars and have a variety of sushi items. Totally satisfied every Monday when I leave.

  • S G.

Ahi avocado salad is good, miso soup delicious, spicy albacore is okay.. Will not order again. And rock n roll eel is just disgusting.. Just nasty after taste and more.. Service is quick and good.. But food....

  • Brian F.

I would not recommend this place. While I was in the Marines I had better Sushi from the commissary that was frozen than the supposedly "fresh" sushi served tonight. The tuna was brown, the rice was undercooked and the presentation as to cuts were just short of a 1st grader with a knife. I was extremely disappointed and will not return. Save money and avoid this place.

I've been eating at Sushi Hana since the '70s. That was the '70s, right? I mean, I remember there were hippies all over the place, tie-die shirts, hemp jeans, and everything smelled like Patchouli. Anyhow, they used to be out on Reserve. Now that they're downtown, they're still the best Sushi in Montana, bar none. A bit pricey, but seeing as how wages are super-depressed in this part of the country, it all balances out. Right? Er ... Just bring your Trustafarian magic account access card. You'll be just fine.

First off, YES I know this is Missoula, Montana however, this is the worse sushi place in town. I have given it a chance a couple of times because I want it to be good. Nara is better and that is not by much. I hope the new Chinese/Japanese sushi place stays around for a bit so I can give it a chance. So far so good. Don't fall into the trap of dollar sushi either! Every time I have ended up spending more.

  • Paul B.

I love sushi and this is Missoula's best. It's nothing to write home about, but I keep going back when I'm in town if that means anything. Monday night is $1.00 sushi night which makes it worthwhile.

I just ate at Sushi Hana and it was really bad. You need to understand that I have never said that in a review. EVER. Until now. Sushi is one of my favorite foods, and I've had some pretty bad sushi before--even once when my wife got food poisoning from some sushi that was not fresh. I love great sushi and have had it at some of the best restaurants, but I also can tolerate crappy grocery store sushi and enjoy it for what it is. With that in mind, please understand the gravity of my next statement. Sushi Hana is the worst sushi I have ever had in my life. I arrived, unbeknownst to me, on dollar night. A buck per piece of nigiri or three pieces of a roll. I was pretty excited as the list of item available for the dollar special was not unsubstantial. I ordered two unagi, tuna, and tamago; one salmon, scallop, albacore, octopus, squid, inari, flying fish roe, and cooked shrimp; and three pieces of California roll and "Rock and Roll" roll (which was unagi and avacado). I ate the scallop first and as I brought it to my mouth, I began to smell it. I had a very fishy smell and taste, not fresh at all. That was the worst one, though. The rest were just stale-tasting, bland, and fishy. All of the fish was cut thinner than I've ever seen before. Not sure if this is just for the dollar sushi or their standard practice. Additionally, all of the rice pieces for the nigiri were premade and sitting in a bin on the sushi bar. All of the fish was also already precut--superthin and skillessly (jagged edges, sloppy cuts, irregular shapes, inconsistent sizes). Again, I don't know if this is regular fair or just the dollar night rush. Either way, the rice was awful. This was end-of-the-day-grocery-store-sushi-quality rice. It was old, stale, and tasted off. With on exception, not a single piece of sushi tasted like it should. The eel tasted more like barbecue than unagi, and the Rock and Roll roll tasted overwhelmingly of the toasted sasame seeds it was rolled in. I like the flavr or toasted sesame, but when it's drowning out something as flavorful as broiled eel, there's a problem. The only thing that surprised me was the salmon. I'm from Seattle, so I had anticipated the salmon not being as good as I'm used to in Washington. I was ready for that. But while the rice was still gross, the salmon was actually very fresh tasting and delicious. Not amazing, but far better than anything I expected to put in my mouth from that plate. I don't know if the locals just don't have access to higher quality fish, but the high rating and positive reviews on this restaurant are not warranted. I'm finding that as I travel from state to state for work, most of the restaurant reviews are by locals that don't have a wide view of food quality. This is troublesome for people who are from out-of-town like me who expect a four-star rating to be amazing. But it's not like people from Missoula are going to compare everything to world-class food--the best restaurant in Peducah, Kentucky probably has the same rating as the best restaurant in New York City because it's only the people who can go there that are rating it. Maybe for those for whom Missoula is the bell curve, this is good sushi, but I legitimately haven't had sushi this bad from a Costco party platter. I would have left and eaten somewhere else, but I only had a 30 minutes to eat and had to get back to work. I'm honestly hoping I don't get food poisoning. Already starting to get a bit of the bubbleguts. :/

First time here and the wife loved the sushi, as for me I had the chicken teriyaki. The chicken was too tough and the sauce was too thinned out! Only 1 waitress and she had to manage all the customers during the lunch rush hour, but service was still ok.

  • Dolores G.

Anymore even a land locked state can get good fish. I enjoyed my visit to Sushi Hana, I stopped in on one of my evening walks downtown. Good quality, service and priced right. Would do it again!

If I still lived in Missoula, I would probably give three stars just because it's very hard to get Japanese food in the area. You can't even find Japanese soul food, natto (fermented soy beans) there, that's how tough things are. That sad selection of "oriental food" at Safeway is pretty much all (although the Good Food Store may have more, I'm not sure). That's why I'm no longer there. I gave up on sushi in the first place because I just didn't expect good fish available in MT (excepts trouts and stuff, of course) and it was very pricey...ordinary roll for $11. So I got pork katsu (deep fried pork) instead. It came with cucumber salad, miso soup, rice, katsu, shredded cabbage and carrots, and a few slices of fruits. Sounds good. But I almost fell down when I ate the cucumber salad - it was SWEET. There were strawberry and blackberry on the top. Dressing was...fruity. Challenging. So I moved onto miso-soup. Salty. I really wanted to add hot water. And it had only a few tofu cubes in it. Rice was a bit too soft but I didn't care because I was craving for it real bad. Katsu was decent - HUGE portion and tender. You can't screw up shredded cabbage and carrots, so no need to mention those. Service was friendly. Clean bathroom. Decor was kind of interesting (what's up with that huge white kimono hanging on the wall?) but not hideous. Granted that this is a Japanese restaurant in MT...but $15 for the dish was too much. I know I'm spoiled in Tacoma, WA where lots of Asian restaurants are available for cheap, but...well never mind.

Traveling in Montana has made me realize that I am very spoiled by the quality and selection of restaurants back home. Sushi here was very average, we were expecting more because of the reviews. We were glad we made a reservation, it was very crowded on a Saturday night. And it took a very long time to get our food and our waiter disappeared for long blocks of time.

    (3)
  • Monica P.

Now, If this was on the coast it may only get 4 stars but in Montana? 5 frickin stars! The Tempura, the Crispy Tuna Tartar appetizer, the Hot Moon, the Bodega Sunset, and the Fried Banana dessert are the best things on the menu. Enjoy :)

Well certainly not the best Sushi you will ever have but for a small town it is pretty darn good. Went on a Wednesday night and they had $1 Sushi night. About 15 or so different Sushi to choose from and 3 rolls on the dollar menu. No Sashimi (that was disappointing). Good seaweed salad, good tempura, decent local beer selection and average sushi. If you are around Missoula and craving Sushi, it is a good choice.

Passing through Missoula, I checked my GPS for a sushi bar. Sushi Hana was the only Japanese restaurant on the list. Feeling brave, I headed downtown and walked into a very cool, very "college town" sushi bar. The staff was very friendly and young. I'm sure they're all students. They have a few ladies there from Japan. I was happy to see, one made my sushi. I chatted with the waitress/hostess for a while, who was super nice. She served me some delicious "pink" tea. I became an instant fan of Sushi Hana. My rainbow roll and California Girl was fresh and perfect. Maybe I just came on a good night, but they did me right.

  • Sabrina H.

Compare with what I get in the SF bay area in terms of quality and price, I think Sushi Hana just an ok place and on the pricey side. I understand Missoula is not near ocean by any mean but with that kind of price I expect a little bit better quality, both fish and rice. The rice is kind of cold and the fish is thinner than what I use to. If this is the only one of two Sushi place, I guess I can't complain too much.

  • Audra L.

Considering we are in a land locked state, the fish here is pretty good. I hope they add real Japanese ramen to the menu soon, though.

My husband and I often go to Sushi Hana. It works out great; he eats the raw pieces and I eat the others. Today, my teenage niece and I went to see Footloose at the Missoula Community Theater. There is so much to do in this great town of Missoula. It's too bad more folks don't take the time to try out our wide array of international restaurants. We went to Sushi Hana for her first sushi experience! Tomorrow, she can tell her friends at school that she ate octopus. She's one brave girl! And, I couldn't let her be braver than me; so, I ate the raw fish this time! Each type of fish has its own texture and flavor. But, I won't be fighting my husband for the raw pieces - not much anyway. The servers were great in explaining the ingredients and cheering Ashley on! The sushi chef even gave her a tiny little octopus to take home. Remember your first time eating sushi? This may be a trip down memory lane! Ashley's Comments: Edamame: It was really good, they are bland, but the salt makes it taste better. Miso soup: It was bland, but I'm not a big fan of tofu. First piece: Lightly boiled octopus it was so weird, it was slimey and controlled my mouth, very hard to chew. I kinda wanted to puke but it was also my first time eating anything of the sort. Second piece: Grilled eel - It was amazing, it was sweet but not to sweet and the way it was cut made it look sorta like a sea horse....it was funny :). This was probably my favorite sea food of the evening. Third piece: Shrimp this tasted like shrimp on sticky rice.... mmmmmm shrimp Tempura green tea ice cream: At first i was really scared i mean fried ice cream? but it was delicious! The out side was crunchy and tasted like a crape then the actual ice cream tasted like ice cream you cant go wrong. It was covered with huckleberry and chocolate syrup and in the middle there were strawberries. Best desert I've had for a while.

My favorite place to dine in Missoula. I was pleasantly surprised to find a great sushi Japanese restaurant in Montana. Everything was excellent. If it is a special occasion, it's Sushi Hana.

A great all-around sushi place. Fresh fish, nice atmosphere and great service. The hamachi kama is delightful.

I've had better sushi. BUT, i do love their whole little squid/sushi and their california roll, those two were fantastic! everything else was so so. it is cool to sit at bar and watch the chefs prepare the sushi though. Twice i have gone there and had TERRIBLE service with a waiter. took forever to get us water, confused me, ignored me and took a long time to get check. that i will never forget. but the times i've gone in afterwards were better. but still not great. i would only go there dollar night just because its cheap. (but not fast)

Great sushi. especially for Montana, and the best in Missoula. My favorite dishes are the Alaska roll (comes with a sweet and very spicy sauce and great for those that love crab) and the Ahi Crisps (an appetizer). The kitchen staff does a great job : )

Very good and hot spot in town on Monday night. Dollar specials on Monday makes this the spot. Very fresh fish for this far inland. Definitely a must Missoula Montana.

Sushi Hana is a decent to good sushi restaurant for landlocked Missoula Montana. I've had food there that wasn't the best but I've also had quite a bit of food that was very delicious. There are new chefs now (perhaps new chef and owner?) and the last time I was in it was really quite good. A lot of people compare it to big city sushi, but I think for most people's taste it is definitely at least 3 1/2 stars if not higher. I'm always willing to up my stars if the service and food warranted. I've been there many times and I will continue to go.

Pretty good sushi and Japanese cuisine in a humble setting. I came here with a big group - about 30 or more. I don't think they were quite ready for us, because the food came out really slow and the waitresses seemed overwhelmed while getting our drink orders. However, they were always really nice and courteous, When the food came out, I really liked the selections of sushi and the vegetable/shrimp tempura was excellent. It was served with this dip that you really have to try... on anything. While waiting for our next plate, we rolled the dip in our rice and ate that right up. The building itself is pretty basic, and there's a long trippy hallway to the bathroom. I could see myself stopping in here again on a trip to Missoula!

  • Sean S.

Well, it's sushi in Montana. Pink ginger, cheap chopsticks and dollar sushi night... All signs of a mediocre joint. I give it three stars though because considering it's distance from the ocean, it could have been much worse. Also, there wasn't a single Japanese person working there. The fish was a bit fishy and the rolls looked like, well, they were made by a white undergraduate. All in all it was cheap and decent, but if you're looking for something spectacular go to California.
