This is a must eat at place when in Missoula. If I had one complaint, they ran out of soup before 1pm on a Sunday. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy?! I should elaborate. My husband grew up in Missoula and loved going to Staggering Ox as a child/teen. The popular meal for poor teenagers was a bag of bread guts with ranch dressing. (which is really delicious. Their ranch dressing is amazing!) This visit my husband got to take both of our children to eat here for the first time. Anyone could see how much it meant to him to do so, while he related his stories to them. Every time we visit Missoula, Staggering ox will have our business.

Love love love everything about Staggering Ox. The clubfoot is amazing. Actually, everything on the menu is. The French onion soup is without a doubt the best I've ever had. If you go make sure to ask for a punch card. 11 sammies and the 12th is free!

Over the last few months that my wife and I have been coming here, each and every time becomes a little more unappealing to us. The first time was great, but it just got worse over time as far as quality is concerned. However, today we were running around trying to get errands done, and just wanted to make dinner simple, but just not cooking anything at home. My wife wanted to hit Staggering Ox as it is right on the way home. We drove up to find "open" signs still lit-up. So, we drug our sleeping 9-month old daughter from the car, and prepared to go in. We got to the door, and they were actually closed. Don't get me wrong, they were closed due to Memorial Day, but I would assume someone could have turned the signs off. And, unfortunately, as of even more recently, I have just plain not liked what I ordered. I keep trying new things every time just to find something I like, but I have yet to be impressed as I was from the first time we were there. I also think I lost my appetite when I looked into the kitchen from the front, and saw that the person who was making all the food back there, was not wearing any gloves, nor washing in between duties. The clubfoot breads are great and everything, but I think I'll stick with Subway and Quiznos for sandwiches.

The sandwiches are unique and good. But I've had poor/rude service the last few times there. So, I'm done with the place.

Pretty hip little joint. The sandwiches are actually made from a can! That's right the dough is baked inside of a can and you can see the ribs from the can very distinctly. The sandwiches are very creative with gyro meat pastrami ham turkey all the basics. Very funky names too. Check out my photo I had this sedam slammer. The only thing I really didn't like was you had to empty your own sandwich tray and there wasn't really a place to signify where to put it. But like I said, more on the hipster side of things.

Initially, I had a bit of a long wait because they had forgotten my order in the midst of the lunch rush. After a bit, one of the employees realized they had forgotten my sandwich and she came out and asked me what I had ordered and said they would comp it. After a bit, my food came out with an extra cookie to boot, and then a coupon (filled out stamp card) for a free sandwich on my next visit. This had been my first time to Staggering Ox in about four years as I had stopped going after a few sub par visits with mediocre food a few years back; but after hearing that the quality of the food has gone back up, I decided to give it a try again on a whim. The food has improved...immensely--my sandwich was delicious. And while they may not be "on the ball", when they do make a misstep, they make an effort to make it right. Both of those have won me back as a future customer. I will be back.

I seriously can't get enough of this place. The sandwiches are so good--they stuff them full with the meat and sauces. The menu is extensive so you can order more than just a sandwich if you want. The staff is quick and answers all your questions if you're confused by some of the menu items.

Called the store, they said to email you, don't have time for that, but thanks for your response I guess..

Is it possible to lose all quality overnight? This place answers that with a resounding, yes. Was one of my favorite places to eat. Now I puke in my mouth when anyone even says the name. Not a single employee was wearing gloves or washing there hands between orders. Hello cross contamination. Not to mention it's effin gross. My friend had a nut allergy, which we made perfectly clear during the ordering process, but still ended up with sunflower seeds in her sandwich, one by the way that should not have seeds according to your menu. Do any of your employees even know the menu? The front of the restaurant was dirty, so I can only imagine what the kitchen looked like. The employees working back there must have had tourettes, cause the profanity was flying out of there, faster then the food I might add. I've been in Missoula my whole life and know quite a few folks that have worked there over the years. All the stories are the same, the owner doesn't care. You pay people minimum wage, and you get a minimum wage experience. I will NEVER be coming back to this, once the greatest, restaurant. I suggest you pass this one up on your way through Missoula.

Definitely a much better service and sandwich quality today. I finally returned after a year away and am glad I gave you another chance. I appreciate the response to my previous comment. We ordered 3 sandwiches and were on our way with our order within 5 minutes. i hope to see the Staggering Ox burgeoning with customers again soon.

The Ox is a Missoula icon! Great sandwiches that are on the short list for lunch out when out of town guests come to visit, they never disappoint!! Portions are enough to split a sandwich between two adults and leave feeling more than satisfied! Have been a staggering Ox faithful since 1979!!

Staggering Ox had always been one of my favorite local restaurants. The bread is fantastic and the selection of sandwiches is awesome. The only problem I've ever had with them is how slow service is, even when it is dead. Great place, great food. My absolute go to sandwich is the Clubhouse.

We had heard pretty cool things about Staggering Ox Sandwiches. I was excited to try a sandwich that was shaped like a can. This was a first for me. My wife and I each ordered different meals, and I can say that they were both good. Not great, but good. The service was sub-par. The guy did not appear to be enjoying his job, and gave us minimal information about the food. He was not polite. If the staff had a bit of energy, this place would be much better. Until then, I have to stick with 3 stars :(

The combination of 10+ years away from Missoula and being emaciatingly hungry in no way influenced my review of a sandwich that satisfied my ninja loins and refueled my desire to assassinate again. Honest! Could the person taking my order have attempted to look like he cared? Perhaps. Could the service be a tad bit faster? Maybe. Could Syfy's next big hit be Sharkano, where ancient sharks that lived in magma are awakened by drone warfare between 'Murica and Russia, forcing both to join technological forces to build a robot named Vladirrack Puma to battle Lava Sharks? Yes! I didn't go to Staggering Ox for the decor (clean) or the service (ok). It's all about the food. Three Mile Island with Camel Spit is glorious! The sunflower seeds add a crunchy element to the slabs of meat and veggies tucked inside the chewy tube 'o bread. And surprisingly, the sauce did not pool on the bottom of the tube 'o bread. The sauce was instead evenly distributed between the ingredients. T-shirt Ninja says: I flew and drove a combined 26 hours just to eat this sandwich. You should do the same too.

Sandwich is great, but the staff is always grungy and unfriendly. Don't go for dinner because they run out of most items on the menu.

Staff was uninterested in helping, place was dirty and it took way too long to get a subpar sandwich.

The Staggering Ox can have great food. So good. The service is almost always terrible. They never include the right sauces. They won't remember to put in bread guts and such. If you have a custom sandwich they will likely make it wrong. But if it's right it is delicious. Step your game up. The one in Helena is 5 stars though.

I'm usually happy with the food when I come here, there's a nice selection & everything I've had is tastey. But the staff is not very consistent. A lot of times they seem irritable & not friendly at all. The last time I was here (maybe a month ago) on a Friday evening they hardly had any food left. They really only had a couple choices of sandwiches. I was not very impressed that they weren't prepared & had hardly any ingredients(I understand sometimes you may run out of an ingredient or two, but to be out of everything?!) The sandwich I ordered was really not that great either. I was pretty disappointed & will probably take my business elsewhere.

The Mount St. Helens is really good. Sometimes they put too much sauce into it and the sandwich falls apart. Other than that it's perfect.

The menu is great, wonderfully different sandwiches and generous portions for a reasonably low price. HOWEVER, when you combine college student workers with ineffective, or inattentive, or incompetent or non-existent management you get inattentive service and a dirty establishment. We were there for an early lunch and the floor still had scraps of paper and food. Certainly this had not been swept at closing the day before and certainly not upon opening. Tables were stained with food and sticky. And though there were only two other tables with customers, the kitchen staff had forgotten to microwave one of our orders: they put in into the oven, but forgot to press the buttons. But they sure have a good, collegial time here. My wife commented that given the unclean public areas just what did the kitchen and food preparation and storage areas look like? Our guess is that the high reviews are mostly from the hippie college crown that does not notice dirt. This location needs immediate management attention and a thorough scrub-down. We do not recommend this filthy location and will not return other than to see if anything has improved.

This place is fantastic! Don't expect any normal boring sandwiches. These are well thought out creations that will make you want to add this place to your must stop list. Ambiance is typical sandwich shop with plenty of seating and adequate bathrooms. $15 got us two substantial special sandwiches, 2 drinks, and 2 chips. Forget subway or Quiznos. Stop here for something fun.

I travel 1200 miles for lunch at the Ox! It's been a favorite since the early 90's...

Not too shabby at all. I went there based on some recommendations of friends when I was in town. I ended up going with the The Nuke, and it was a tasty sandwich. I like their variety, and the fact that they aren't just normal sammiches that you eat everywhere else. But. I've had better sammiches at other places, so I can't give it a five. I will, however, be back. I want to try all their specialty sammiches! Bonus: cute punk-ish girl there. Always appreciated in my book.

I don't know why the food doesn't seem to be quite as good as it was at their now-closed downtown location. Maybe it's the corporate, cookie-cutter look of the place. Anyway, the sandwiches are still very, very good and I plan for a visit EVERY time I visit Missoula.

    I love this place!

  • Kaylee M.

i went there seeing they have a consistent 5-star rating. I would rate it mediocre. the sandwich i ordered was served in a cylindrical bread, which is a neat concept, but the bread is thin and went soggy quick with all of the sauces. the sandwich was mostly lettuce with a thin core of bacon, turkey and cheese. i might as well have ordered a salad. the sauces weren't distributed evenly and ended up towards the bottom. taste was equivalent to any other sub shop. for $7 a sandwich i was hoping for more but was disappointed. on the bright side the staff was nice and service was quick.

great variety of sandwiches and a very friendly staff. always ready super fast and is always delicious.

  • Alex C.

The sandwiches aren't bad, and there's good variety. It's always been clean, and service has been good the 5-6 times I've been in there. The ratio of lettuce and bread to meat is rather high, though. You need more of whatever the core ingredient in the sandwich is to make it very good.

Whenever I visit Missoula, there are two places I've got to eat at: Hoagieville and Staggering Ox! I love the sandwiches at Staggering Ox! I could eat them everyday if I had one closer to me. The creative names and meat/cheese/veggie combinations are awesome and fun to say. Note: Be sure to throw some Camel Spit on your sandwiches! ;-)

I moved to LA in '09 and boy do I miss the Ox. I've always been a sucker for a good gyro but the Slammed Saddam is just BEYOND. The atmosphere of the 39th street Ox is hip and casual - great for college students and families alike.

Woooo the OX! I have not been to their downtown location, this one is super! Their sandwiches are so unique and tasty. I usually find myself standing back and taking in the full menu for several minutes (thus I stand aside and let others pass while I decide what to have this visit). I have tried something different each time I go. The sauce selection is great, the meats fresh the bread signature! I will have to try one of their rice or potato bowls sometime but I can't move beyond the sandwiches there. One day, one day....

Having grown up near Helena and mainlining the original Ox fare, this place is a disappointment. I can handle the abbreviated menu, the uninspired decor and the apathetic wait staff, but what I can't tolerate is the ruination of the Club Foot. Granted it's been a while since I've partaken of the food at this place, but the reason I stopped going was because they didn't follow the procedures for making a good Club Foot. They stuffed the ingredients in the bread for an uneven distribution. And my personal beef is they added the sauce themselves, therefore depriving me of the ability to properly administer the Camel Spit in the proper proportions. Call me an Ox snob, but this place falls far short of the excellence put forth by the mother store.

I'm a newbie, so I opted for a safe Turkey "sandwich" with pepper jack cheese and ranch dressing. HOLY MOLY. What a delicious invention they have there! The service was quick and the girl who took my order was super nice. My friends encouraged me to get the cheesy "bread guts", which I dipped in Ranch: DELICIOUSNESS! I was SO FULL though... next time one or the other! Another plus: any establishment with a soda fountain that allows you to put your own flavoring into your soda holds a special place in my foodie heart! Absolutely going back!

I really do love the Ox. I'm sad the one by my house isn't open anymore, but it's always worth the short drive to the last on in town. The bread and filling always tastes so fresh, and their dressings are full of flavor. Still some of the best french onion soup I've ever had, though it was better years ago. For maybe a dollar more than most Subway sandwiches, it is always one of my top choices for a great lunch.

I really miss the downtown location. I don't eat here nearly as often, but I still enjoy the Mouse Trap sandwich and a half dozen Ox Guts with ranch dressing to dip. I also fondly remember a great chili bowl here.

The OX Rocks! I love the OX, so many killer sandwiches to choose from, I love their creativity that they come up with to put in the only thing better than sliced bread, bread in a tube. I really love the concept of the sandwiches, have you heard about the cool bread? This place is more than worth checking out, I believe they have a few stores even out of Missoula. I have tried to visit the OX whenever I am in town, most recently I had the Nuke, which is bread that looks like it was cooked in a tube then hollowed out, inside it is Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, Swiss, Provolone, Cheddar and Lettuce, Tomatoes along with a sauce of your choice, I had Ranch and boy was it good :) There are so many different combo's to choose from and the option to have them hot or cold. If your down for a sandwich then you should check this place out.

This was my first visit to the Staggering Ox. I was in town on business and I like to try local joints vs chain restaurants. I had the Saddam Slammed and I did like it. The Camel Spit was very tasty. I was somewhat disappointed in the amount of meat that was on the sandwich. That was the one thing that was lacking. There could have been at least twice as much lamb in the sandwich. I would definitely eat there again but would have to ask for EXTRA MEAT! The service and atmosphere were great however.

My first trip to Missoula was over ten years ago and I have been dreaming about the Staggering Ox sandwiches ever since. There have been many a times where I find myself telling the lore of the stuffed bread sandwiches to total strangers while they stare at me with blank and bewildered faces. Staggering Ox Sandwiches are magical feats of sandwich creating deliciousness. I don't care about "different locations" or any of that business...I just care that this is the best sandwich west of the Mississippi and I finally after nearly a decade got to have one again about a month ago. I can't even remember the name of the sandwich I got this last time because I was in total euphoria. And euphoric is exactly what my sandwich was. Here a little tip though, don't get one of the hot sandwiches. They cost the same as the stuffed sandwiches but they're considerably smaller. My friend had an unhappy face the whole time we were there as she jealously eyed my amazing stuffed sandwich. Hmmm...bring them to San Francisco!!

  • Dan H.

Same great food as the downtown location. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was as of late the service has been a bit lacking. My wife waited over half an hour for two sandwiches and didn't even get an apology from the staff. Parking is much easier at this location than downtown and the building itself is much more airy and open feeling.
