Surprisingly good! I'm super picky about Mexican food, after growing up in the Arizona desert. Lots of choices, spiced just right. Lots of flavor without unnecessary heat (unless you add it). I had the tamales special. Barbacoa pork with a touch of sweetness, cornhusk wrapped as they should be. Lots of flavor in the beans and rice too. Fresh pico. Huge choices for drinks include horchata, fresh mint lime aid and hibiscus lime aid, sodas, flavor shots, teas and frescas.

I have a love-hate relationship with Cafe Rio. On one hand, they have some great tasting items, such as the Fire Grilled Chicken or Steak Burrito, and their Queso is amazing. On the other hand, they are continually running out of stuff whenever I go there. If they are not out of fire grilled chicken or steak, they are out of queso. One time, they were even out of tortillas. I tried doing take out a few times, but they never made my order until I showed up which defeated the purpose of take out. The crew has always seemed nice, but they need to figure out a more efficient, reactive and productive system to better run their store, especially now that Chipotle has opened down the street.

Inexplicably slow-moving prep line, excessive amounts of butter lubing up every tortilla, and usually out of steak and fire grilled chicken. Great strawberry lemonade though!

$16-20 easy. Quality food that's fast. Noisy. The business lunch crowd -and I do mean crowd - likes to come here. You will be moved quickly through the line. As a disclaimer, they tell you almost nothing is gluten-free, so don't bother asking. There's a difference between not using wheat products in foods, and having items certified by a third party as gluten-free (is there any such thing?). To avoid the liability, servers have been told to say pretty much everything has gluten in it. Although for authentic mexican cooking, the main difference is between a wheat or corn tortilla. Choose the latter. I can't guarantee certain items like adobe beef and refried beans don't have 'enhancers' and thickeners made from wheat, added to them to make up for shortcuts in flavor and preparation. So if they are prepared to make such broad claims and you are reading this to plan ahead, go elsewhere. It's pricey, for mexican food. However, due to the location and the way it's organized, the price fits. Not somewhere I would normally eat. You will get a good meal here if you don't mind that you already make 30$ / hr and up, and can afford the bill. Missoula and the States in general being overpriced for the quality of life; this is an example in that direction. For a better price and a less stressful atmosphere, El Cazador!

There's a reason this chain doesn't do well in Denver. It's terrible. The food is NEVER hot. It's over priced and tastes funky. Go to the Taco Bell in the parking lot instead.

I love taco Tuesday and go frequently. Their staff is pretty friendly and they are fast. Their prices are great especially for someone on a budget. The taste really depends on what you get and their cilantro ranch dressing is the best. I only rate them low because if you are a vegetarian, you have to really watch out for surprises in you meal!! Three times so far this year, I have found meat in my food. So vegetarians - be cautious...unless you like the surge of unexpected protein. ;)

Very yummy...all of it. Burrito, nachos, rice and beans. Excellent. The portions are pretty big so either bring an appetite or a friend to share with. The guacamole is home made (all their ingredients are) and super yummy, and this from someone who doesn't eat guacamole. We would definitely eat here again.

  • Lauren G.

Meh... very friendly service. Very mediocre food. A burrito's quality is not necessarily measured by it's size. This place seems to go for only quantity. Less on the quality.

Just a quick update to let any taco lovers know that they have "Taco Tuesday" specials! On my last visit I tried the chicken tacos, and greatly preferred them to the overly-sweet pork. It can be a little hard for them to hear you order - don't be afraid to speak up!

PROS: Yum!!! Food is fresh and tasty here, nothing tastes bad! They have different special everyday and I love taco Tuesday the best! CONS: I'm extremely thirsty after eating here from the seasoning. You won't think it's salty when you eat their food but my body craves for water after I eat there.

Great food at a decent price. It's always packed and service can be slow at times. The buffet style eating means you bus your own tables so it can be a challenge to find a clean space to eat at times. Despite this, it's still one of my favs!

  • Zula H.

Very dissapointed in this place, long lines, overpriced, very bland food. They need to clean cobwebs and dust hanging from hood and lights right above your food. Dont waste your time. I recommend taco bell across the street.

Food sucks, sauce is more like water, no flavor. Worst excuse of Mexican food I have ever had,". The employees were super nice and friendly and efficient but I blame the chain for having such shitty food!

The best in town at what it is. Extremely fresh Mexican food. Amazing fountain drink selection. Happy ambience. Friendly staff. I had a chicken quesadilla with all the trimmings. Tortillas were being made fresh in front of me. Hubby got a pork burrito, enchilada-style. Both were excellent. Drinks were strawberry lemonade and mint lemonade. Both superb. I will be back here many many times. Soooooo gooooood.

Great food and the atmosphere is nice. Ordered the enchiladas and side order of chips and queso. The queso had a charred / burned taste to it. Since I ordered the queso before, I knew something was wrong. The owner gave us two coupons for a free lunch next time we were in. Overall very happy with the meal and the way they handled the issue with the queso. I'll definitely repeat...

I've only been here to eat once.. I ordered the enchiladas which were really tasty... I do go in there every few weeks on my way to work to get a large strawberry lemonade only 2.09!

I ordered takeout from this place on a regular basis for the whole family awesome chicken tacos call and place your order so you don't have to wait in line friendly staff good parking and fairly fast line

  • Laura S.

I love the food, hate how wasteful it is. This place should re think the waste factor because everything goes in the trash, drives me nuts. Love the enchiladas though. Update: these guys got back to me, they say that their waste service takes care of the recycling for them so this is good news.

They make fresh tortillas right in front of you. The portions are HUGE I always have leftovers to take home & enjoy later. I'm not a huge pork fan but I fell in love with the pork here. Try a pork burrito enchilada style! It's always busy around noon so to avoid the big lines I suggest getting here closer to 11:30 or 1. They always have a daily special. Saturdays special is coconut shrimp tacos & they're pretty spectacular

This place was pretty good to eat at, I enjoyed the flavor of the meat and the tortillas. It could have used a few extra options to put in the tacos and burritos but I thought it was delicious. The salsas were so-so, not enough flavor of peppers or spices more of garlic and tobasco. I would enjoy eat here again though!

  • Gerry M.

The service is bad. I waited for cheese ( you would think th at cheese would always be ready) while two guys stood around doing nothing for customer service. I left without. Also no guacamole ready. Really?

Good gluten free options, delicious, fresh prepared ingredients. Unique beverage choices. I first visited with coworkers for lunch, and enjoyed it so much I can back to pick up lunch to go.

Cafe Rio is in a league of their own for "convenient Mexican." Terrific tortillas and salads. This location does not stand up to the Idaho or Utah locations. Small tortillas were in a package and not rolled fresh. Large tortillas were fresh but didn't taste as good as the other locations. All that said, the only place you can get a better tortilla is at another cafe rio.

New restaurants are always are welcome sight in this small town of ours and I was looking forward to another Mexican option here in town. I've had their food before at the Salt Lake City airport so I knew what to expect in terms of food but I was going to experience their full blown restaurant experience for the first time. The chanting and singing like everyone mentioned is a little unsettling and is a little "in your face". The food itself is really good. Their meal options are quite vast and the ingredients looked and tasted fresh. An observation from a coworker was that the food here isn't served piping hot and I had to agree. It wasn't lukewarm by any means but it wasn't as piping hot as I'm used to for Mexican food. Other than that small complaint, I really enjoyed eating here. The prices seemed on par with the competition in town and the restaurant is nice enough is sit and enjoy a meal in.

Well to start off Saturday night... Should have the entire crew working??? All the tables are empty but a line wrapped around three times, ummm can you say slow ass workers. It takes so stinking long to get through that line. If that wasn't bad enough during the dinner rush the cook goes to the bathroom wearing his apron!!! Then comes out of the bathroom and back to work cooking food with the apron that was just in the bathroom. Are you serious??? You and I both know that apron was touched by some body part you don't want to associate with food. So gross come on cafe rio get your act together, have some sense of urgency, move faster, and for goodness sake take your apron off when you go to use the bathroom

Wow. This was my first introduction to apparently a fairly new franchise. I was very impressed and hope we get one in Chico, CA soon. Sadly, they were out of the pulled pork so my DH had to get a chicken burrito (which looked amazing), I stuck with my standard chicken tacos and was not disappointed. My only "complaint" is that they had run out of rice (they WERE quite busy when we arrived), so I made do with the black beans as a side. I did not, however, go away hungry! Great job... looking forward to trying this one again!

Best I have had in a long time... Will be back. I got the nachos.. They sing "nacho nacho man" lol

Pretty good. The grilled chicken burrito was good. I'd come again. Would like to try again, maybe the salad. Ps I know Mexican food also, this is tex-mex style, with Mexican accents.

Now I like their food and the employees are great and friendly. The only reason I am given them one star is because and this is no hit the police and the firefighters because I feel that they should get a discount everywhere they go. I feel the military should get a discount as well. So if you are in the military and you ask for a military discount at Cafe Rio they are going to tell you "sorry that they dont give military discounts." And there is nothing the manager is willing or able to do about it.

Hands down the best Mexican food in Missoula...probably the entire state. Other Missoula restaurants take note: this is how steak (carne asada), grilled chicken, and tortillas are supposed to taste. Sure, it's a chain. There are no margaritas, etc. But, if you're interested in decent tasting Mexican food, this is your only option Missoula. It's not worth loosing a star over, but I could do without the cheesy chants and songs from the employees every time someone orders nachos. Save your chants for your team meetings before the customers get to the store. When customers are around, just have fun and be genuinely friendly. Chants and songs mandated by management are an annoyingly transparent attempt at "customer service". But, keep the great food coming. Maybe some of the existing competition will step up their game.

Great tortilla soup! Get the soup with some fresh made tortillas, just awesome and yummy on a cooler night. :-)

Best mexican food in Missoula! This is my most frequented restaurant in MIssoula (since they've opened) and the food continues to impress! The freshly made tortillas and their selection of meats make for great tacos! Their specials have always been good! Their prices are probably below what they should be for the quantity and quality of food. Their selection of hot sauces and interesting drinks (e.g. mint lemonade and horchata) are great! Service is quick and the staff is very friendly! A great place to eat!

OK, they are the new guys in town and we should give them a warm Missoula welcome. We went on Taco Tuesday and got "real" shredded beef and chicken breast tacos with great pico de-gallo (or however it is spelled.....the big chunks of onions, tomatoes and cilantro) The meat wasn't steaming hot, which was a little bit of a bummer, but the smiles of the staff and the songs they were singing was well worth it. Their soft drinks are great and include strawberry limeade, horchata and the usual sodas. It is sort of fast food because you stand in line and then carry out the tin plate full of food or eat at the colorful tables and chairs. Best part................drum roll...................their little packaged mints are cinnamon. Yeah. We were more than satisfied. Judy Helm Wright aka "Auntie Artichoke" Author, Speaker and foodie

Probably picked the wrong day to visit this place... Black Friday. It was packed, and the line crawled for nearly 30 minutes before I finally got through it. Fortunately, the beef tacos I ordered were pretty good! For Montana, I really can't complain. Easy to recommend--on a less crowded day, anyway.

Very disappointing. Im originally from down south and i am use to good authentic Mexican food. The only thing i found at this restaurant to be authentic was their tortillas. I have never been to an authentic Mexican restaurant that did not have re fried beans or red spanish rice. From my experience people in Montana dont know what real Mexican food is and it shows by people thinking this is the best Mexican restaurant in Montana. My husband and i were so grossed out that we actually threw our food away. Trust me Missoula (considering i am Mexican) there are way better Mexican restaurants here. I have not found one in Missoula quite like the real deal but one or two come close.

Good atmosphere, nice staff, but food was just ok. It has a different flavor, not very fulfilling. Kind if expensive for a small portion.

What is with all the hype?! This place is BLAND with extremely slow service; it's also overpriced and overrrated! I got an enchilada style chicken burrito and was excited to try it, especially with the homemade tortillas and reading some of the other great reviews. The not-thoroughly-cooked, somewhat crunchy rice and watery beans had no flavor; the chicken tasted like it was simmered in salty, red-dyed water and the salsas were extremely disappointing. I got all 3 salsas to try on the side and had hoped that adding these and/or the hot pico de gallo to my burrito would help, but they did not - it was still bland and tasteless. I went in for my first time at 2:30PM on a Monday. There were 4 people in front of me and it took at least 10 minutes to get through the line. Also, for an $8.50 burrito ($7.50 base price + $1.00 enchilada style), I was expecting something better. It would have been even more if I wanted guacamole and sour cream, pushing my burrito price to $10!!! I'm not sure where the high-rated reviews came from unless I just went on an "off" day (meaning EVERYTHING was off).

The atmosphere was pretty obnoxious. Loud music, loud employees, and no booths to drown out nearby conversation. The food was mediocre at best. I was excited when I saw hand made tortillas, but much less excited when I tasted them. I can eat spoons full of flour at home. The sauces were WAY too salty. There weren't enough vegetables. (No olives?!) The rice was not done. The beans were soupy. The chicken was slimy. Worst of all, no reusable dishes. Styrofoam cups for water and you throw all your dishes into the trash. I won't be back.

We had a wonderful experience here! The staff was friendly and the food was superb! The sweet pork was excellent and the drink options were unique and great! Definitely my new favorite Mexican place in Missoula!

Quite possibly the worst dining experience I have had in Missoula. Long lines, cheesy chants, up-selling of extra cost options, and the food was bland and tasteless...even with the hot salsa! There are so many other options for Mexican food in Missoula...go to ANY place other than Cafe Rio!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
