You have to go to sketchy looking places to get good Thai food. This place fits that description perfectly. ;) My wife and I like extremely spicy food, and usually we cannot get anything spicy when we eat out. When we asked the cooks here to make it as spicy as they could, they really tried their hardest. (Normally, cooks will hold back, or just not even know what to do.) They really did a great job of bringing up the heat level. We were also happy that they did not just sprinkle chili powder or hot sauce on top. They made us fresh food, and they cooked the spice into it. My wife had chicken panang curry, and it was wonderful. However, the portion was quite small considering the price. I ordered the chicken pad thai, and it was definitely not as great as I hoped. But the serving size was generous. I wouldn't give them high points for authentic Thai taste (maybe 3 stars), but I would give them 5 stars for trying to make us happy! We might go back for lunch tomorrow. :)

My wife and I had dinner at Toi's and weren't impressed. The portions were small, especially given the $13/dish price tag, and most of it was rice. The green beans were clearly canned, not fresh, and when the dish is beef, green beans, rice, and curry, that makes a huge difference. What led me to write a 1-star review, however, is an incident following our visit. My wife accidentally left her water bottle at the restaurant - a $25 Hydro Flask - and when we called later to see if it was found, we were told that it had been found and we could pick it up whenever. When we got to the store, however, we were told the server who found it put it somewhere the other employees didn't know of. Fast forward to now, and I'm told an employee may have taken it home but the store won't reimburse us because "we're not responsible for lost items." I would totally understand that if the bottle hadn't ever been found, but since the store did find it and keep it, it became their responsibility. Other small business owners I talked to said they'd definitely replace the bottle. Toi's, if you read this and want it taken down, you owe me a Hydro Flask.

Good service. A friend and I came in about ten minutes after they opened so it wasn't busy and we got our food pretty fast. I ordered the chicken panang and didn't like it very much, but I am a pretty picky eater. My friend ordered the pad Thai and it was great! Wasn't too spicy. We got the sweet rice dessert with mangoes on top and it was delicious! We will definitely be back.

Toi recognized us for the buffoons we are. That automatically puts this restaurant in a category of its own. Delicious Panang Curry, I would recommend to all passing through travelers. The noodle dishes are pretty good (Pad Ki Mow and Lard Nar) but it seems as if the curries are where it's at. Wontons were crispy and served with a tasty plum sauce. HUGE benefit to this restaurant is that you can bring your own wine/beer and there is NO corking fee! Love it! Service is A+, the people who work there are charming especially the owner Toi. A helpful recommendation: if you think you will be eating here on Friday or Saturday call in ahead to get reservations. It can get very crowded and is a small establishment so having that as a safeguard is really helpful.

So here it goes: Pros: Food deserves 5 stars, GREAT, perhaps the best in our limited Helena restaurant market. Cons: Terrible service and extremely confusing operationally speaking. Odd hours, mediocre space, and no clear idea what's going on when you enter the place. I rather do take out and avoid ruining some fantastic food with a disappointing ambiance. Make sure you call before hand, they give you the stink eye if you are brave enough to walk in without a reservation.

Took a group of 9 for 5 days of auditing all the way from Moses Lake, WA to Bozeman, MT and this was the meal everyone talked about! The food is so fresh and good. There is not one item that I can talk about because our group ordered nearly every thing on the menu and everyone was blown away. MAKE A RESERVATION or you'll be eating somewhere else!

I had been looking forward to experiencing Toi's Thai for months, and due to their irregular hours was finally able to try it last night. I'm sorry to report that Helena is still without good Thai food. Menu items tried: Thai Spring Rolls that were soggy and filled with imitation crab and chicken, no vegetables at all (which is where the name "Spring" roll comes from). We also had Panang Curry with chicken and the Shrimp & Pineapple Curry. The Panang had 3 very thin pieces of chicken as big as my thumb and an entire can (yes can) of green beans. Nothing else but the rice and curry. What? The protein portion of the Shrimp curry was the same story. All pineapple with about five pieces of shrimp smaller than cat treats. I LOVED the curry sauce however, which is why Toi gets two instead of one star from me.

Excellent!! I have had Thai food all over the country, and this is some of the best! I love the Thai green salad, green curry, and sticky rice (definitely the best I've ever had). It is such a fantastic, authentic little restaurant in Helena! Make reservations!

OMG OMG OMG Toi's is the best. I've had thai food all over (not in real Thailand, but maybe someday, amiright?!), and Toi's is my fave. I remember back when I was a little kid Toi was a checker at Buttrey's, and telling us about her dream of opening a Thai restaurant in town. We were hopeful for her, though who ever knows if someone else's dreams will come true. Then, she quit Buttrey's and opened her restaurant! It was so exciting, we were all so happy for her. I had dinner before my senior prom here, dinner for many a birthday, many an anniversary, and so on. It's a special place. The food is great, Toi comes out and says Hi, and the atmosphere feels very authentic (though, please do see above ^ I've not been to Thailand. But I'm still cool enough you would think maybe I had!!! Hahahaha, kidding. Kinda) My favorite is the Number 1 meal, or the red curry with pork, or shrimp and pineapple curry. I love the salad, and the spicy shrimp soup. And, like with all things in life: ALWAYS GET DESSERT. It's really good! I think the portions are great, I always leave with a box of leftovers. A few things to note: Yes, it is small (get over it--and I say that with love). Yes you need reservations (Sign of a good place, I think). And yes, it's hot as hades in the summer (IT IS LIKE YOU ARE IN THAILAND! OMG!). The highlight isn't the service, but it doesn't matter because the food is so good. Bring your own wine or beer. Go eat there! Enjoy! :)

One star because our waiter was REALLY nice, but everything else was pretty awful. First of all, it was uncomfortably hot inside the restaurant. We were seated right away, but sat at our table for about 15 minutes before the waiter brought us menus and water. He was the only waiter and he was basically acting as a waiter, host, and bus boy. Once we finally got menus and placed our orders, we waited about 45 minutes before we asked where our food was because we had tickets to a show and needed to leave. He said the cook was about to start making our food! Why was she just starting on our order 45 minutes after he put it in? When the food arrived, it was horribly mediocre. I got veggie pad thai which kind of just tasted like plain noodles soaked in oil. I wasn't really expecting anything mind blowing, but pad thai is pretty hard to mess up. Really disappointing. I really wanted to like this place! Again, our waiter was super nice and apologetic, but that wasn't enough to save the experience.

This place is very bland and food is very greasy. Lemon chicken was rich and spicy but no lemon flavor. Green curry tasted like spicy coconut milk. The best thing was the kids noodles with chicken. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

Gross and slow. I used to like Toi's. I try to support local, downtown businesses. We called in a to go order at 7 pm, and were told it would be 30 minutes. 40 minutes later we arrived to find people stacked like cordwood waiting for a table and to go orders. Our food was ready at 8:20, 50 minutes after we were told to be there. We were told they were out of rice and we could substitute noodles or wait. The beef salad had been in the container for at least half an hour, so the lettuce was soggy and well past done. This used to be a solid order, but the spicing was weird and off. The spring rolls were in the middle of autumn, approaching winter. The shrimp green curry was ok, heavy on the bamboo and light on the shrimp, but ok. Toi's used to be a thing, but it is over.

The only reason this place gets two stars instead of one is because the people that work here are so nice. I almost feel bad leaving a negative review but I feel an obligation to warn out-of-towers craving good Thai food. The food here is AWFUL. I'm visiting from California and my boyfriend and I wanted some good Thai and this was the only restaurant in town. We dropped by for lunch only to discover they aren't even open at lunch time, they only serve dinner. So we came back later in the evening and ordered Tom Kha Gai and Pad Thai. The Tom Kha was so overwhelmed by lemongrass it tasted sour. And instead of the perfectly seasoned broth I'm used to at virtually every other Thai restaurant I've been to, it was creamy and thick and a little grainy. I couldn't even force myself to finish it. The Pad Thai was slightly better, but that's not saying much. It was so bland it might as well have been ramen. I'm sure this is the best they could make with the ingredients available in Montana so kudos to them for trying. And the staff is so incredibly nice. If you've never had real Thai food anywhere else I could see how maybe you might give the food a good review, since you don't know any better. But if you have ever had good Thai food before, don't come here. You will be sorely disappointed. I was bummed I wasted $30.

Toi's is exceptional. I brought visitors from Chicago who are Thai enthusiasts and they raved about this restaurant. This is a small place with one primary chef and when it is crowded, you may have to wait. It is worth the wait!

I really wanted to like this place. I was dying for some Thai food and I saw this had good reviews. It was a busy Saturday evening (6pm) and the place was full and service really slow. To be fair, once server admitted that this was his first time working and it was an emergency situation where they needed help. A lot of tables had to get up to ask for service/menus/checks and clearly were very frustrated. Onto the food: - beef salad - Spice combination was right but just too much of it/sauce. Beef was a little chewy but the veggies were good - yellow curry chicken - almost entirely bamboo shoots. The chicken content was less than your 4 fingers and it was chewy and overcooked. I wouldn't go back.

This year I wasn't super impressed with Toi's. Tom Yum Goong was extremely thick in consistency and overly seasoned with salt. The pineapple curry had a nice spicy sauce but the shrimp were cut up in pieces and the pineapple didn't seem fresh. Again, not a good idea. The fish was good and tasty. The garden salad had a very, very, vinegary dressing that made it almost inedible.

I travel to helena once a month, the reviews on this place made me want to give it a try. I called in, and ordered my food to go- the server informed me it would be about 40 minutes, as They were understaffed. I was very understanding and actually didn't arrive to pick up my order until about an hour after I originally ordered it. To my dismay my food still wasn't ready. I politely waited another ten minutes- when my food was ready I requested Togo plasticware. The look I got asking for this was ridiculous; Even more ridiculous, was the fact it took 3-5 minutes for the chief to get the plastic ware. I noticed when I was ready to eat- it was Dirty! Ewww. Now if the food was fabulous, I would have let the rest of this go- but it was SO disappointing. The pad Thai had absolutely NO flavor- it was like eating plain rice noodles. The curry was extremely greasy, lacked flavor, as well as the vegetables that it says it includes on the menu. (No eggplant, carrots, or peas). Maybe it was an off night, but either way I will not go back to tois Thai.

The food was okay. But what I really did not like about this place was the lack of space. You are practically sharing a table with the people next to you. Not a place for a quiet, intimate dinner.

A perfectly average place that is highly overrated by the locals. Rather bland thai food that isn't bad, but not particularly good either. Maybe it's not fair to compare this restaurant to big-city thai places, but it doesn't even stand up to other places I've eaten in Montana. The epitome of a restaurant that has a portion of the market cornered and acts like it.

Decent Thai, especially for Montana, but not mind-blowing, either. I'm not going to fault them, though, as I suspect (know, actually) that things like green papaya, Thai basil, and fresh lemongrass are difficult to come by here, especially in restaurant quantities. I believe that these folks are doing a good job with what they've got, and that real larb would be a hard sell here in Helena, despite the popularity of rare steaks in the state. The three flavor fish dish is excellent. Definitely call ahead and make a reservation, and BYOB.

Toi's Thai is super super tasty & lovely Toi often peeks out to say hello (or "You Awesome!"). We always order "Family Style" and have never been disappointed. It is an incredible amount of very fresh, very authentic food for a bargain price. It is tiny & in high demand so call ahead. Take out is another great option, although then you don't get the wave-after-wave of amazing food appearing in front of you experience!

Yes there is pretty good Thai happening in Helena! I was very happy to discover Toi's in downtown Helena. I wanted to have a hot date with Mr. Hottie so I made a reservation for Toi's! I was so glad to be visiting Helena during the week when we had time to visit Toi's without interfering in our weekend adventures. We arrived at 7:30 and only had to wait a few moments before we were seated. It gave me time to take in the tiny spot. There are about 7 tables in the whole place. It is a very intimate setting. There are pictures everywhere and the ambiance is almost cozy and homelike. Once we were seated we wanted to do a bit of a tasting menu. Our friendly waitress told us that she can have Toi plan a menu for just two people. We told her we liked spicy food and to gives us whatever she liked. Toi was delighted to fill our request! We started with the Garden Green Salad which was simple and tasty. We were then given small bowls of Tom Yum Goong which is a hot and sour soup with shrimp and mushrooms. It was very good. It was tangy but savory with the mushrooms adding to the flavor. Next, we were given a platter of food. On the platter was Veggie Spinach with green onion and chicken in a peanut sauce, Green Curry Chicken, Pad Thai, and Goon Num Num Hoy, which is Shrimp with oyster sauce with green onions, bell pepper and mushrooms. Everything was very good. I enjoyed it all. The heat level was good. For dessert we had banana with sticky rice, yum! It was a nice finish to our spicy meal! Did I mention the place is BYOB? To be honest, I don't remember if they charge a corkage fee, but it was nice to have a nice bottle of wine with our meal. I hope to return to Toi's one day. The service was friendly, the setting was cozy and the food was very good!

This place has great food. All three curries are very nice, and not too spicy for my non-spice-loving daughter (I could actually use a little more heat, but I'd rather that she like the place, too). The noodle dishes aren't as great, but overall a very nice place to eat. As far as eating there, you have to have reservations. Although reservations are not technically required, practically they are, or you will not get a seat. It is a very small restaurant - perhaps seating 20-22 - and it is very popular. But they do to-go, as well, which we've done more often than eating in-house. They have a very interesting rice desert, as well. No booze to order, but you can byob. Friendly staff, friendly owner, good food.

I went here for my birthday dinner and we had an overall pleasant meal. The portions are fairly small and the prices are fairly high, but it's decent Thai food in Helena so I'm giving it four stars instead of three. I would avoid the noodle dishes and just stick with the curries. The noodles weren't bad but they didn't have a whole lot of flavor. The curry was very good. We tried the Panang curry but next time I'd like to try something a little spicier. We didn't try any of the other rice dishes but we had the spring rolls which were good. We also ordered one of the soups and, while it was only lukewarm, the flavor was very good. The service was good considering there is only one server and no host/busser. The dining area is very cramped. There is at least one table that should be removed completely. I probably won't dine in again but I'm looking forward to carry out in future. Oh and if you do dine in, don't forget to bring your own beer or wine! No corkage fee.

Thai that is almost unparalleled. In a town as small as Helena, you wouldn't expect to find Thai food of this quality. Toi cruises the restraurant herself ensuring that you are having an authentic experience, and is always there to make recommendations if you can't find your way through the unique menu.

I was so looking forward to eating at Toi's, especially after eating some GREAT Thai food at the Bozeman Co-Op. Toi's is only open a couple days a week and only for 4 hours during those days, so I waited with high hopes. Everyone had said the Toi's was great. Well, sadly I was extremely disappointed. I saw the waitress mix up several orders, there was only 1 vegetarian entree, and 1 vegetarian soup, no vegetarian appetizers. The food was highly overpriced ($22.00 for a vegetarian curry dinner). I gagged down the Tom Yum Guy soup which was basically coconut milk with some kind of chicken and mushrooms, just tasted like hot coconut milk to me. Then on to the peanut sauce over chicken and rice, which tasted like straight peanut butter and some hot chilis (nothing special about that). Then on to the "Green Curry" over rice with bamboo, which was actually palatable, but nothing to write home about. Interestingly enough, my fiance had the Green Curry vegetables, but the curry didn't look anything like my green curry, in fact, it looked and tasted like the same coconut milk that I had with my Tom Yum Guy soup. We suffered through a $48.00 dinner. Other people weren't so lucky, and about half of the people there had some kind of complaint about the food. Bottom Line: If you want good Thai, check the Bozeman Co-Op at bozo.coop for the menu at the deli.

One of my favorite places to eat in Helena. It is definitely a hole in the wall and only seats about 20 people. I wouldn't recommend it for large groups but it is perfect for dates or small groups. Make reservations - it is always packed and waits can be upwards of 30 minutes. My boyfriend and I are curry fanatics and are beaming every time we leave. I always try not to eat everything so I have leftovers but have yet to walk out with anything. Maybe I should get take out too. Although they don't serve alcohol, you can bring in your own which is awesome. Very reasonably priced and always friendly, fast service.

Toi's is by far the best food in Helena! Great place to take you significant other. Would not recommend planning to go as a large group because Toi's is more of a hole in the wall joint with limited reserve seating. Also, don't forget to byob.

This place is cozy and the food is fantastic. One of our favorite places to eat out. You typically need to call ahead for reservations, but if you want you can phone in an order for take-out. The curries, honey lemon chicken and Padd thai are all excellent. Definitely get the sweet rice dessert before you go.

I haven't been that impressed with Toi's in the two times I've eaten there. After living in Seattle, where great Thai food is ubiquitous, maybe I'm a little spoiled. But the pad thai and the pad see ew, which are the only two entrees I've tried, tasted EXACTLY the same, and if you've had them before, you know they're very different dishes. They were both pretty bland, without much spice or outstanding flavor. The peanut sauce for the chicken satay was good, however, and the cucumber salsa was yummy, too, if a bit unwieldy with the ginormous chunks. The tang and sweetness actually prompted me to mix it in with the pad thai, which mildly improved it. I have decided not to pass complete judgement on this place until I have tried the curries, so I might have to update my rating then!

as the only thai restaurant in helena that i could find on yelp, i decided to try it. and it's not bad! i had low expectations for this place, and when i went into the small restaurant, was pleasantly surprised. there were a few groups waiting which was awkward considering the small space, but no one wanted to be out in the cold. i asked about take out and was told that they did not do take out on valentine's, but they probably took pity on me and said it was ok anyway. i asked about a menu but was told that on v-day it was only a set menu. i went with the yellow curry instead of my regular noodle dish. i met toi and spoke with her for a little bit and she was very genuine and humble about her little restaurant. the food was pretty good with the portions looking a bit small but actually very filling!

I have eaten Thai food all over the United States and I have yet to eat at a place that is as good at Toi's. She lovingly cooks all of the dishes herself and they are happy to take special requests to modify food on the menu to meet your tastes or needs. If I had a complaint, it is the size of the seating area. Yes, it is part of the charm, but I have been sat at tables there that were so tightly shoved into the seating area that the wait staff couldn't get from table to table. Incredible!

Toi's has some of the best, authentic Thai food in the Northwest! The hard part is choosing from all the greats on the menu. If in doubt, just ask Toi. She never hesitates to tell you what she thinks! My favorite, though not particularly original is the Pad Thai. MMmmm. Reservations are handy, and bring your own wine.
