Some weird wild stuff bakin' up in here! And they wouldn't give so much as a clue as to how they make them funky bread canisters. If I was a local I'd likely have a friend break into the kitchen some overnight to get spy photos. Anyhoo, massive menu. The items we tried were all tasty, especially with dribbles of sauce added with each bite. I'm prolly the only person in the world that would give a crap, but I also really dug the local cherry soda in the dispenser machine. C'mon girls, fess it up...how you make them breads!?!

Favorite sandwich shop in Billings. The sandwiches are so creative and the sauces are divine. Potato of the sea is the ish! Great place for a quick bite, cool vibe, good service, and local brews on tap!

Huge menu (can be a bit overwhelming) fresh ingredients and bread baked on site. The cashier could have been more friendly, I informed her I was from out of town and new to eating here. Would come back again.

Clean, love the layout and taking a yelper recommendation tried the Beastie with the horse radish sauce man great taste and cleared sinus. Prices are fair for the product served. Really enjoyed the flavors, and the creative bread rolls. Man did I mentioned right out of the boxed hooked on the beastie, next time the Sadam, thats how good I thought it was already planning next visit

This is a great place to go if you have people from out of town visiting. Chances are they have never seen a sandwich like these! Their quesadillas are huge and awesome. Lots of good things to be had here.

I work near by and always come here for lunch. Super affordable and VERY good. Fast service, great quality of sandwiches. Would highly recommend to anything else in that area.

Clean restaurant, friendly and quick service, epic sandwiches. This location is up to franchise standards and is a breath of fresh air amongst less desirable alternatives. My Beastie with blue horsey was outstanding!

I was really excited about trying this place, for some reason. I think they have an interesting marketing plan because it drew me in. I think it was some song I heard on the radio that was initially catchy. Anyways - I forgot my lunch one day and used the opportunity to try this place out. I ordered a warm pulled pork that was a special. It was decent, I guess. It wasn't nearly as good as I had imagined it would be in my head. The cheese was coagulated and hard and the bread got all smooshy. I would go back again, but I think I'd have something else. Its a good lunch spot, but nothing overwhelmingly special, I suppose.

First time at Staggering Ox. Was recommended by my daughter inlaw and grandson. Kind of unusual sandwiches but very tasty. I'd definitely try them again. Prices were also very reasonable.

My husband LOVES this place. He loves the cold sandwiches. I on the other hand just like it, and I prefer the hot sandwiches. Don't care too much for the sauces they have. But I like the people there! Always helpful and happy!

I have to admit that this was probably one of the most creative sandwich shops I have been to. The Clubfoot sandwiches here are basically served in what looks like a torpedo or tube of bread. I went with a pulled pork sandwich, which had a pretty good taste and thanks to the creative bread wrap/bowl I didn't have to worry about my sandwich being a huge mess. Another plus was the soda selection, they had a Kiwi lime soda, which was amazing. The staff was friendly and provided quick service all in a clean and fun atmosphere, I recommend the Staggering Ox if you are looking for a quick lunch.

This was the worst "pulled pork" sandwich I've ever had. The cut of meat was full of fat nuggets. It appeared they had taken some ham lunchmeat, diced it, and squirted some BBQ sauce on it. By the time it arrived at our table, the bread on the bottom of the sandwich was already completely soggy. There was so little coleslaw in the sandwich that I can't really say if it was or wasn't any good. The only reason they're getting 2 stars rather than 1 is because my buddy had the chicken teriyaki and thought it was good. The restaurant was clean and decorated nicely, for what that's worth.

It's so sad because I love Staggering Ox Missoula and have never had anything but the most amazing sandwiches there. The sandwiches at this location in Billings were mostly lettuce and bread hardly any of the yummy topping you would expect. Very dry and boring, and not worth the money.

Have you ever wished you could hide under a table to escape someone? Well, I have!! I travel a lot for work and whenever I am in the Helena area, stop at the Staggering Ox to eat. The food and service in Helena is outstanding! Imagine my surprise when I ordered my favorite meal of the Teriyaki Chicken bowl and was brought a portion roughly half the size of the one I receive at the Helena location! I decided that maybe, it was just a bad day for them and decided to give them another try. The next time I stopped by the Billings location and ordered the Teriyaki Chicken bowl, I told my sever about the difference in the serving size. The server was polite and thanked me for the information. While waiting for my food to be prepared, a woman who I can only assume was the manager since she did not identify herself, approached my table and began yelling at me. She proceeded to tell me that if the portions were not the same, it was an error on the part of the Helena location. That they are responsible for the training all Staggering Ox employees receive and if it was different from location to location, they must not be following their own training and not using scales to measure food. All the while this woman was yelling at me, she was poking the air in front of my face with her finger. People in surrounding tables were looking at me and quite frankly, it was very embarrassing! The woman left but before my food was delivered, came back to yell some more telling me she had gone online and that the prices in the Helena location were higher than theirs. As I think back on this incident, I am still shocked at the horrible customer service I received at the Billings location. If the manager had a problem with the way another location was performing, she should have taken it up with the manager of that location, not attacked a customer. With that said, I will NEVER return to the Billings location and will tell everyone I know about the abuse I suffered from the manager of this location. Billings has a large number of restaurants with great food and excellent service, why would anyone go somewhere they are not appreciated as a customer?

The employees were pretty engaged in the menu and offered some great recommendations. That was good to see, because I asked quite a few questions. One thing that I learned quickly is, I was overthinking! At the end of the day it is a sandwich. I enjoyed my meal, however; I wasn't impressed with the portions. I ate my sandwich in about six bites, as a matter of fact, I was still hungry when I left and I went to the hawaiian bbq place right up the street and got something else to eat! HAHA! Would I go back, yes. Would I call home about this place, no. A suggestion, offer different sized sandwiches if possible, those with appetites would appreciate it!

The place has a great atmosphere and I was excited to try after hearing all the great ads. The menu was a bit intimidating and workers seemed impatient even though I said they could come back because it was my first time and I'd be awhile looking at menu. I ordered a French dip and it had soggy bread and not very flavorful. I thought the food was over priced ordering for my husband, me, and my small child. I think I could have spent same amount at a nicer restaurant and got better service and food. The only thing I loved was the brownie.

  • Julianna C.

I love this place. Usually when I travel out of town I try to go to eat at places I don't have in the town I live, but it was on my way to my hotel so I stopped in an very happy I did so! The sandwich of course was delicious as expected but the service was quick and everyone that worked there was super friendly and nice. I definitely recommend anyone to try it out especially if you've never had one of these unique sandwiches.

Interesting concept for sandwiches. I got the veggie with ham. It was warm, which was unexpected but not bad. The wasabi ranch was really delicious. It looked like they had a good happy hour. I would definitely come back for that.

Have eaten here twice -- first time had a cold sandwich that was just okay. Dry, but you have your choice of sauces which helped but had bad flavor. Second time had hot turkey sandwich that just came with turkey and cheese. VERY SMALL! I asked them to add lettuce, tomato and onions and they charged me 75 cents EACH to add them (of course no difference if I said "hold" the mustard). We had our sandwiches and then drove over to McDonalds for a snack wrap as neither one of us were any place close to full. Will not be going back a third time.

Weird shaped sandwiches. Like the bread was made in a soup can. Average at best.

  • Brandon B.

LOVE this place! The sandwiches are fantastic, my new favorite The Cheese Ox, can't rave enough about how good this is, be careful when it firsts comes out though, its super HOT! I normally have to let it set about 5 mins. or so before it's cool enough to eat. Really friendly great staff at this location also, always a pleasure to eat here.

After spending the day in Billings, my kids and I decided to stop in to grab some sandwiches for the road. A friend of mine who lives in another town with a Staggering Ox can never stop raving about them and how amazing they are. Curiosity piqued I was expecting to be blown away, but the sandwiches were just good. The prices weren't horrible, but at the same time I would've expected more sandwich for those prices. The sandwich concept is interesting. (When I brought my husband a sandwich home his response was, "Is this a sandwich from a can?") The ingredients tasted fresh, and my bacon was cooked to my picky perfection. The bread had a nice, light texture, but the sandwich seemed to be lacking in flavor until I liberally slathered the side of ranch provided all over it. All said and done, it was good. We will likely give them another shot in the future.

One day a couple of weeks ago after a long day of running errands and shopping I decided to give the Staggering Ox a shot. After all, I was in that vicinity and the bread looked so intriguing and tempting. When I finally decided to give into temptation it was like 2 PM already so I ended up having a late lunch. I wasn't sure what to order and spent a great deal of time ogling the menu, which was just sorta overwhelming. I overheard two ladies order the Rubin Tubin and knew that I had to have just that. I'm totally into Reuben sandwiches and corned beef in general. Heck, one time I even had a Reuben for lunch and then a Reuben for dinner. The sandwich is definitely smaller than I imagined but it's a decent size for one person. Definitely not big enough to be shared though. Not that I had that problem since I was flying solo that day. The sandwich was just alright. The corned beef didn't really taste like corned beef to me. In fact, it tasted like some black pepper beef from some crepe place back home, which don't get me wrong I used to rather enjoy. But I was just expecting a Reuben that tasted like a Reuben. What was not alright was the 1,001 Island dressing. I really didn't like this dressing one bit since it tasted like they used horseradish as a base and I really hate horseradish and Wasabi and anything similar in taste. So all in all this place was just really average. It wasn't that great but it wasn't bad either so I think three stars serves it justice.

Great sandwiches...had the BBQ beef special. Try the Wasabi Ranch if you want some kick to your food. Great that you can get a beer too. The most unique style sandwich I've seen and loaded with the good stuff.

I order the nachos here with chicken and have never been disappointed. They come with spicy chili. I like the meatball sandwich too. Very clean restaurant. A favorite spot for me in Billings.

I stopped in to this place after a co-worker told me about the unique bread and sandwich style. It intrigued me so I decided to check it out. The menu is extensive, so take your time to look it over. I ordered the "Nuke", which they proudly told me was voted one of Maxim Magazine's top 20 sandwiches a few years ago. When you order your sandwich, you then get to pick a sauce that come on the side, and you add yourself. I got the Italian dressing and a cup of chili. The chili was tasty, although just a tad heavy on the rosemary. The sandwich was bland, although the ingredients were fresh. The bread, which is unique on it's own, was soft and chewy, which I enjoyed. The dressing, which should have been the real kicker, was bitter and had a taste similar to iodine. The entire sandwich needed a good deal of salt the bring out any flavor that was hiding inside. Now, I only ordered a few things off the menu, but it was supposed to be their best item, and it really didn't hit the mark.

I'm from the Bay Area where options of food and stores are abundant. We were cruising our new residence of Billings to find out what stores and food places we recognize. After seeing Bed Bath and Beyond was right next to Cost Plus I grew much more comfortable with my new surroundings. However I grew hungry. We really were not sure what the Stagering Ox was but felt inclined to check it out. As we walked though the dining area we noticed these GIANT and UNIQUE looking meals in front of the already eating patrons. We went to order and asked the staff for their favorites. I had the french dip (warm sandwich with a jus sauce to dip in) and my partner in crime had one of the stuffed cold sandwiches. Glass cups are provided by the fountain drink area (a nice change from plastic or paper fast food options) and the food was great. We've now been a few times and I've tried the greek inspired "camel toes" and some of the great large cold sandwiches. We've never been disappointed and the Staff is always willing to chat and give their favorites. There's daily bread specials and we do have our favorites but that hasn't kept us away on the days that there is a different bread option. The side dipping sauces are great (so far we've liked them all) and when we tried to explain these sandwiches to our friends and family back in the Bay Area they just looked puzzled...It's a whole unique place and I recommend it to anyone looking for a happy tummy.
