It was ok. The sandwiches aren't that big, it leaves you hungry. and the prices is a little much for that amount of food they give you.

Tops BBQ is a great place to start your Memphis BBQ tour, and this location in particular if you're driving up from the south. Although technically located at the last exit before crossing the Mississippi-Tennessee state line, this is a Memphis chain and area barbecue staple. Although the barbecue big guns in Memphis include folks like Jim Neely and Charlie Vergos, if you want a quick, easy, and dare I say it, a lighter version of the local BBQ, Tops is a great place to check out. The #1 - the regular pork shoulder sandwich - comes with slow-smoked chopped pork shoulder (obviously), and is topped with sauce and mustardy coleslaw. It might no be the most tender pork in town, but the sandwich is flavorful. Plus, at 7 bucks a pop for the sandwich, 2 sides, and a drink, this is not a bad deal for quality barbecue. If you want something a bit more filling, they have a larger version of the sandwich, and a menu that extends beyond shoulder. If you're on-the-go, or simply driving through Memphis, and can't pass up the opportunity to grab some barbecue, Tops BBQ is your spot, and you can find it in multiple locations across The Bluff City!

Quick, cheap, tasteless, unfilling. I came with coworkers who suggested I try the burgers. I dislike burgers so got the #1 bbq burger with fries and beans and ate every bit but was hungry afterwards. The fries were ok but the beans were the tastiest thing I ate. Won't be back. Liked: - Beans - Fries Disliked: - BBQ Burger

This was the worst food ever!!! We just wasted over 25.00!! I ordered the sampler plate and my Husband ordered the double cheeseburger combo! The brisket was tough and very bland. The ribs were so dried out, I couldn't eat them at all! The pork shoulder was horrible, bland and tasteless!! My husband's burger was totally dried out. The meat was chokingly dry!!! The person(s) responsible for packaging the plates, need to be fired! I wouldn't have given a dog those ribs. They appeared very old and totally dried out!! Had to wait 45 to order then took another 30 minutes to get the order. This was at the new location on Stateline. It was our first time and last time eating there!!! Shame on them!!!! We threw it all away! Couldn't eat it at all!!!

My husband and I tried Tops for the first time last night. The service was very slow, many people even left the restaurant because they were tired of waiting. The customer service was poor and the bbq was some of the worst we have tried in Memphis. I would not recommend this bbq to anyone looking for a good Memphis BBQ dinner!!

I currently live in Austin, Texas, which boasts about four places that smoke cow. The residents call it barbecue, and they honestly think they do it better than anyone in the world. In most respects, I prefer my current hometown to my original hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. But I dearly miss the 40 or so places that smoke pig there. Because that's REAL barbecue that the entire world brags on (not just the locals). Tops isn't one of the high-dollar downtown rib joints that get all the breathless coverage in the New York Times and on the Food Network. Those places are fantastic as well, of course, but the locals in and around Memphis eat BBQ for lunch and for dinner--oops sorry, I mean dinner and supper. And a classic Tops chopped shoulder sandwich with cole slaw may well be the official sandwich of the everyday Memphian. Now that there's a Tops in Southaven, I don't have to drive far from my parents' home in Hernando when I'm there to visit to get my Memphis BBQ fix. And THAT'S worth coming home for.

It was filling - that's about it. A friend picked it up, so I don't know anything about the interior or the service. This review is based completely on the food. I had a BBQ brisket sandwich, potato salad and baked beans. The sides were pretty good. Not exceptional, but tasty. The brisket sandwich was awful. It was almost completely fat and terribly greasy. Definitely NOT the best BBQ I've ever had.

Food: I was not very impressed by the food, or the courtesy of the service. The portions were fitting for the price, and I enjoyed the baked beans and the french fries. The barbeque sauce reminded me a lot of mustard, and when I took my first bite I almost felt as though I was eating a Maid Rite sandwich. I realize that some bbq sauces are mustard based, but it just did not hit me right. I ate with two of my coworkers/friends and they shared the same sentiment. I would not say to necessarily avoid the restaurant, because if you like mustard based BBQ sauce you will probably enjoy the place.

I stopped by Tops Bar-B-Q after visiting Graceland in hopes of finding good Memphis style BBQ. What I found was decent meat, but thats about it. Tops was recommended to me by a Memphis local as the best in the region. Arriving at the restaurant, I found a somewhat hole-in-the-wall joint, which had a pretty good crowd inside. The service here was disappointing, the woman who was running the register was busy arguing with one of the cooks before she stopped and decided to help us. So my hopes for the famous "Southern Hospitality" were dashed here. The restaurant was not clean either. Instead of looking for a clean table, I had to look for the table with the least amount of garbage and spills on it. After selecting the table, I had to clean it off. The BBQ itself was pretty good, and I do recommend the ribs. Overall this experience could've been much better, and I hope I just caught them on a bad night.
