OHDEARLORDTHEMAJESTYOFTHEPERFECTLYMADEDONUT! Okay, now that that's out of my system ... maybe I can review this place with a bit more lucidity. I was out doing a little southeastern-usa-ride thing on my bike - kinda going out from Atlanta and riding in a big circle through the big heated area south of the Mason Dixon. A L_O_N_G day of riding found me in Natchez, MS ... still a couple of hours south of my goal for the day and with an extremely sore butt. I started looking for places to take a break when, stopping at a light, I saw this place over to the right. A light bulb went off in my head and I remembered that Alton Brown featured this place on season 2 of "Feasting on Asphalt". As those seasons were a large inspiration for the rides I try to do -- I had to try it. I'm just SO glad I did. This -- this is road food. Just a tiny shop on the side of a busy intersection selling perfectly cooked food. I waddled up to the window and ordered two donuts; a chocolate glaze and bavarian cream filled. I asked the guy at the window if I could leave the bike where it was and if there was a place to sit -- he gave me a broad smile, invited me to just hang out and pointed me to two old picnic benches on the side of the building. I gathered my donuts (and two sodas to wash them down) and sat down. The chocolate was just perfect. Melted into the top of the donut so it didn't flake off when I bit into it -- and quickly melting over my fingers. The bavarian brought something new to the table. Unlike "normal" donuts where it's just a large pastry with cream injected into the middle - this was a normal O shaped donut with the cream fried into the center hole. Of course, it was also utterly divine. The picnic benches were a nice place to relax and people watch. The place seemed primarily to be a "drive up and go" -- I was the only one sitting to eat - but I was impressed by the diversity of clientele. The businessman with dry cleaning hanging in the back of the Lexus on his way home grabbed a couple of boxes of donuts followed by a minivan mom with half a dozen kids piling in and out of the car. Overall great food, great atmosphere.

So delicious. I always get the original glazed donut. It is melt in your mouth good. The signs up say they also have tamales and hamburgers on homemade buns, but I have not been able to break myself away from the donut bag long enough to try one. Also- unlike some fancy gourmet bakeries, the prices are normal. We had 3 donuts for around $2.

Addictive like a drug... You cannot stop at one or two; gotta have an apple fritter, too. Take 'em home, close the curtains, & get the milk 'cause it's gonna be thirsty work! Confession on Sunday...

This place has the best donuts I have ever tasted. Rustic on the side of the road place with a few picnic tables for seating. I drove from atlanta to Natchez just to get one of these donuts.

I grew up in Natchez and have always known that The Donut Shop had great donuts and hot tamales. Unfortunately, I have moved away and have discovered that their donuts aren't just great, they are THE BEST and it's impossible to find anything close to them anywhere I've tried. The last time I visited home I tried their hamburgers and... WOW. I also brought home 2 dozen tamales and 3 dozen donuts for my husband and kids (3 hours away) and the food was devoured by the next day. Not even a trace left. Even day old their donuts are better than ANY others. One request to The Donut Shop: PLEASE BRING A SHOP TO MY NEW TOWN!!! We are deprived!

Very good doughnuts, but they were rather low on more popular items. I would go back though.

Forget the chains and grocery store bakeries. The Donut Shop gives dives a whole new reputation. We stopped here at the end of a July 4th road trip through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. It turned out to be one of the culinary highlights of the vacation -- if not the year. When you see this faded blue metal structure sitting at an odd angle on Natchez' busiest road, you'll be tempted to keep driving. Don't! When you pull in to the cracked asphalt parking lot, you might have second thoughts. Just put them out of your head and run -- don't walk -- to the ordering counter. Atmosphere/Service Yep. The place is officially a dive. It has only outdoor seating (covered tables). But the tables are spotless and the seating is plentiful. ~ We were 'foreigners' (Texans) and the line was building behind us on a Sunday morning, but the ladies behind the window answered every question with a smile. Couldn't ask for more. The Food My wife ordered the 'Pinecone.' It's similar to a 'Bear Claw' but bigger and more sinful. It was the perfect way to wrap up a week of off-the-diet eating. Our 6-year-old had the chocolate-iced (I didn't try one, but he devoured them). I ordered a dozen plain-glazed and a half-dozen hot tamales. ~ The plain-glazed were fresh from the cooker. Lightly crisp on the outside with a fluffy interior. All donuts should be this good. I ate six of them and conveniently neglected to check my blood glucose levels afterward. (Why bother?) ~ The tamales are Mississippi-style -- spicy, heavy on the meat/light on the masa and seasoned heavily with cumin. They are served similarly to the way hot links are presented in Texas: with saltines and Louisiana-style hot sauce. While they aren't as toothsome as Texas-style tamales, they are well-flavored. I even added some hot sauce and scooped some up with crackers and ... I think I get it. Bottom Line If you don't bother to stop here, you deserve nothing more than a mediocre fried piece of dough. If you do heed my advice, you'll be glad you did. ~ By the way, we hear that the burgers (presented on house-made buns) are the bomb. I'd have waited another hour to try one, but the six-year-old was on a sugar high and we had another 6 hours ahead of us and ... you traveling parents know where I'm coming from.

This is what Krispy Kreme attempts to capture! Light, yet weighty, sweet and chewy - all you could ask for in a glazed donut! Oh, and the burger was tasty, too! Overlook the seedy roadside setting and let your tastebuds dictate your actions!

Delicious! We enjoyed the variety of these tender, fluffy donuts. We found the Donut Shop on Yelp and the plain glazed and lemon sticks were my favorite. Kids went for the fruity pebbles donut choice--a novelty they enjoyed!

After reading the good reviews for The Donut Shop in Natchez, we had to try them out. My wife had a cream cheese filled eclair - she said it was about the best donut she had ever had. I had a treat made of "twisted donut deliciousness". They melted in our mouths with great pleasure. If you like donuts - or even if you don't - treat yourself to a tasty treat at The Donut Shop. Don't cheat yourself - get enough to satisfy.

Every time we are in Natchez this is must stop - multiple times!! Only once out of all those times were they not the best donuts around! They were very pleasant about making sure we were pleased. We are happy to recommend this place to any donut lover! And I have read the other reviews about their food. Their tamales and hamburgers got raves. So the next time we will have to stop there for lunch. - Hope you Enjoy!

Holy moly! These are the real deal. We have a wonderful donut shop in our city, but these folks beat them by a small margin. Get the apple fritter, or the donuts, or the holes. Get some to take home with you if you live too far to make visiting a weekyl habit. I'd say daily habit, but if I lived in Natchez and had regualr access to these, I'd weigh 300 lbs in no itme at all.

Omg!! Seriously the best donuts I have ever ever had the pleasure of eating. The apple fritters are about 1 degree north of heaven. And you just cannot beat the price. Breakfast for 6 with drinks under $20.

We went there after seeing it on food network's feasting on Asphalt. It is worth the trip and calories. It is just donuts, so don't expect angels singing from heaven. But they are about as good as donuts get.

I like cake donuts & they don't sell them... but I still go here because their fluffy glazed donuts are devine. The softest sweetest melt in your mouthiest donut. They also have burgers & fries which are pretty good too.

This was one of the most spectacular eating experiences I've had. If you take a glance through my reviews of other restaurants, you will note that I do not give praise lightly. The Donut Shop is a little roadside stand. You will get a great burger, a bun that isn't an afterthought, crisp curlicue fries, well-made tamales, and donuts that approach their Platonic Form. The key to this place is to go with at least one other person. You order the burger plate that comes with fries and drink, another single burger, a side of half dozen tamales, and once you finish what you can, you each get a donut. Their filled donuts are FILLED TO ORDER. Consider that a for a moment. What I love is that this place is fairly impervious to foodie innovations in donuts and burgers. Honestly, they don't seem to give much of a f*ck about such affectations. These are not "re-invented" donuts with surprising fillings, nor are they pretending to be something gourmet. Those are all good things, mind you. But there is also something wonderful about a place that, without any pretension, sells you what you donuts were decades before everyone became so self-conscious about the fanciness of our comfort food. In the course of eating this ridiculous spread on the shady picnic tables outside the shop (there is, so far as I can tell, no indoor seating), we encountered a few locals. One old guy with no teeth sauntered up from heavens-knows-where and chatted with us about the shockingly high price of potato chips at gas stations. He was a character. It's a dilapidated little place that serves a quintessential American meal. This one place is reason enough to return to Mississippi.

This place is a must stop if you are visiting Natchez or just driving through it. Heck, if you're 100 away its good to make a detour just to eat at this place. They have the absolute best apply fritters i have ever tasted in my entire life. They were so incredible.....and the cinamman rolls which are about as big as your head are awesome too. I also got a dozen of doughnuts and they stayed fresh and wonderful for two days later. Also, they sell the most incredible hot tamales. They are small but they pack a big punch. Homemade hamburgers anc curly Q spicy french fires too!!! This place has everyting. Tamales, doughnuts, juicy hamburgers.....what a great mix and what a great roadside diner. This restaurant should be in some kind of raodside manual of places to eat in the United States. If you are on a deep south road trip you must eat here.
