Quick and decent lunch spot. I believe Jean's is open from about 7-3 everyday. It's located in historic downtown Meridian, and has significant seating areas. We were greeted sweetly and told to grab a seat anywhere - we did such and were then greeted by our server. This menu includes a lot of southern sandwiches and vegetables. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich, which was really fantastic and brought me straight back to my Southern roots. I felt at home biting into the mayo-covered chicken concoction. To top it off, I ordered a side of mac 'n cheese. I love mac 'n cheese, but I think this was a bit on the salty side. I was unable to finish the dish, which is unfortunate given that mac 'n cheese makes my top 10 favs. Jean's gets 3 stars because it's a little dingy, and we waited about 10 minutes just to pay our check. This wasn't because of a lack of service necessarily, just a long line of people trying to get out.

Cheap and filling traditional southern fare. They offer a variety of daily lunch specials.

This is an old fashioned type of establishment found in many small downtown areas across the south. It has a lunch counter and booths as well as tables for seating/dining. It is open for breakfast and closes after lunch. My ill fortune is that my lunch breaks usually fall between 1-3pm, so I arrived at the end of the lunch service. This was my 2nd time to visit this restaurant and this time was as lack luster as the last. Both times my food came out bland and cold. At least this time I had the waitress nuke it in the microwave to heat it back up. I ordered the Chicken Pan Pie off the Thursday lunch menu because they were already out of my first 2 choices for entree. Lunch comes with 2 sides and they were out of my first 3 choices, so I settled with cabbage and turnip greens. The Cabbage was lukewarm and had turnip greens in them, so I really got double dosed on turnip greens. The Chicken Pan Pie was a mix of potpie and dumplings, all made in a large pan. I think the dumplings would have been better. The mixture just didn't work for me. The deserts, however, are really good here. I had the Coconut Meringue Pie shown in the pictures attached to this site. My waitress was nice and her attentiveness rates an average rating. Since I was at the end of the shift before closing I wish they had just told me they were closed. My food was over cooked and cold. Half way through my meal the cleaning crew began mopping the floors with an astringent bleach which stunk up the dining room with unappetizing fumes. The wait staff spent their time closing out the register and counting their tips for the day. All together this was a very unprofessional way to run a restaurant in front of a customer. I have been to numerous "down home" style places and most have been much better. Perhaps my meal would have been better if I had arrived before noon and cleared out before 2. I certainly would have had more choices to select from their menu.

A nice little place to stop, friendly service, wonderful generous portions of Southern food at a good price. Chicken and dumplings is a must, and perfect fried okra. Most dishes are around $7.

Honest good food. This is what you would expect from any southern kitchen. Nothing glamorous or pretentious, just simple food served in a simple manner. I have had the chicken and dumplings and fried chicken. Both were very good. Just like mom would make if my mom ever made either dish. You can tell that the food is homemade and not from a commercial factory. The cornbread is very good. Crusty and buttery. The sweet tea is delicious too! I hope to have more time in town to try more dishes.

Me - "Are the vegetables fresh?" Flo - "No, but they taste fresh." Unapologetic and old school. The waitress was all business and was slightly irritated when i asked "What do you recomend?" However, there was a charn to the whole thing. I guess. Looks like it was remodled in the 60's and never looked back. It was full on a Friday at 12:30. But there aren't many options in this tired town. I had Red Beans & Rice - 70% rice. Actually was flavorful. The beans weren't mush but perfecly al dente. Creamed corn was above average and the "from frozen" turnip greens were actually good. The cornbread muffins were a bit undercooked and bland. Accompanied by "whipped spread" instead of butter. Blegh. I've tasted much much better soul food. The atmosphere sounds charming but the atmosphere was musty and depressing - much like the town. All this with decent ice tea for $7.
