It was a really laid back atmosphere , the lights were not dimmed, and it was only one guy working the entire building... the experience could of been better but it was ok for a night out

Best falafel I've had in a really long time; must try!!!! Lebanese tea is delicious too! Service is great! They also have a grocery store and hookah lounge.

First time customer. Pleasant atmosphere with good music. The server was friendly and attentive. I ordered fried eggplant and the chicken shwarma salad. The eggplant was very thinly sliced and perfectly fried. The chicken shwarma was well marinated and was a generous serving. Made for quite a tasty salad. I will definitely try this location again.

This place is cool for the novelty and late-night hours, but there's no other reason I would go there. The alternately dry, bland, or greasy food, lackluster service, and super strict hookah rules (and prices) are enough to keep me away. I really miss Aladdin, the hookah place not far from Petra that has a bigger selection of delicious menu items. This place also had a much better quality hookah AND a grocery store for the Mediterranean food fans that wanted to try making the stuff at home. You could even buy tobacco and coals for your own hookah there. Unfortunately, that place caved while the popularity of Petra grew, built by college crowds who, in my opinion, don't really know quality service, or care. Sad because Petra was actually a cool place to start. Maybe it's changed management since it first opened.

This place was great. They stay open late and the customer service is awesome. I was passing through Hattiesburg on my way to Dallas (I know pretty round-about) and I stopped over to hang out with a friend. He took me here raving about how good the food was. I was definitely skeptical. The food was GOOD! They have huge serving sizes and the food is well marinated. I got the lamb shewarma platter and my friend got the chicken shewarma platter. We split both so I could get a variety and I did not regret it. I was definitely partial to the lamb but the chicken held its own. If you're passing through or living in Hattiesburg and going to school then definitely stop by. You won't regret it.

Not impressed at all. The wait staff was the only thing going for them. Hummus was grainy and lacked any flavor at all. Who wants to eat chickpeas without seasoning? The salad was covered with so much Greek seasoning that it was choking my wife. She had the falafel which was dry and extremely crunchy. I had the chicken kabobs...but there was no kabob. I don't recommend this place at all. We wanted to try something different and failed.

This place always had a great staff! Small and family owned but always a great experience. The food is wonderful and they have a plethora of hookah flavors to choose from. Best hookah bar I've ever been to!

Excellent veggie plate, the lamb chops were delicious and a Gyro Wrap to die for! I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone! Bartender Zach was great and took care of our every need! Come on down and enjoy excellent Greek food at Petra Cafe.

I can't say I was very impressed. Although our server was friendly, the feta was bland, the vegetables were seemingly previously frozen, and the grape leaves tasted right out of a can.

Very friendly service and nice atmosphere--the food was good too--I liked the homemade stuffed grape leaves and hummus the best--we also had lamb and spinach pies that were good.

This place great. Growing up in Chicago, Greek cuisine became a comfort food to me because it's so readily available. Petra cafe gave me flashbacks of all my favorite dishes as a kid. I love this place and I will be going back frequently.

The food is quite authentic except their hummus. I only taste tahini and oil in their hummus which was a disappointment. The food is a little on the expensive side. The owner said everything is halal for Muslims. They have belly dancing there for dinner around 8pm, but the loud music is a bit obnoxious.

A Middle Eastern restaurant...how are you going to mess up lamb? If anything, with Middle Eastern cuisine you can count on the best lamb ever! But no, the lamb kebob felt like it was cooked once, didn't sell, so it was cooked again. SO tough, my jaw still aches from trying to chew it. The lamb shank was flavorless, bland and chewy. Hummus was decent. I'd only return for hookah.

Gyros are delicious and cheap with large portions! Quality is very good. Split a chicken lamb plate. Ask for the spice sauce!!

Quite possibly the best food in Hattiesburg. Very generous portions, very fair prices, I will be coming back as often as I possibly can. What I have had so far: chicken and lamb platter, delicious, had to get extra rice though, but fed both my wife and I. The spicy sauce (ASK FOR IT) was probably the best condiment I have tried. I highly recommend this place as it should be the highest rated restaurant in town!

My boyfriend and I visit Petra at least monthly. We've gotten a hookah before and it was made perfectly. We love all of the workers. Best service we've ever gotten at a restaurant. The food is always phenomenal. The authenticity is astounding and I am sorry that Hattiesburg lacks so many people that can appreciate said authenticity. I have nothing but good things to say about Petra. I'd recommend the vegetarian falafel plate; a huge portion of food with grape leaves, falafel, rice and more with a lebanese iced tea to drink.

It was hard to find open restaurants on Thanksgiving day when my partner and I were traveling to visit family, but easier on our way home over the holiday weekend. We patronized this spot on our way through Mississippi. Middle Eastern food by a mom-and-pop establishment? Yes, please! It's located in a strip center across from the University of Mississippi main entrance. There aren't more than 10 tables inside the joint plus a patio in the front, but the place was steadily busy the whole time we ate. They have put forth an effort with their decor with a glaze on the walls to simulate dimension and art work and ethnic tchotchkes on the walls and shelves. Arabic pop music videos play on the single flat panel tv. My partner wasn't super hungry so he tried a falafel gyro. My mouth was watering while checking out the menu so I got the lamb shawarma plate. Several entrees come with a lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion, and feta salad, hummus, and warm pita bread, mine included. The lamb shawarma was excellent, perfectly grilled and was served with a fragrant white basmati rice with a few sprinklings of peas and carrots. So. Good. I had to relinquish most of the hummus and pita to my partner so I could finish my entree. I couldn't take it home and couldn't bear to have leftovers thrown away so I finished it all before we got back on the road. No regrets, I'll just eat a light dinner. It was delicious. I'd do it again. My partner finished his gyro and my hummus and pita bread. His only critique was the falafel was quite fried, but we're in Mississippi, right? They do take out and accept credit cards. Great value - inexpensive to moderate prices and the entrees are a ton of food.

Only went once while we lived there, but we really enjoyed it! The manager/owner served us and he was so nice. Would go back if in the area again!

The food here is very good. The service is very hit-or-miss. I've eaten there at least 6 or 7 times over the past few years and have always had good food. If you go in with a party of 4 or less you have a good chance of getting decent service. More than that and they likely will not be able to bring you food out at the same time and some will be finished and others still waiting on their dinner. We went with a group of 11 last Friday night. When we arrived, there was only 1 other table there. By the time we got to order, the place had mostly filled up so we knew they would struggle with that amount of orders all at once. Our group ordered before any of the new groups. It took about 45 minutes before anyone got their entree and 1:15 for some to get their meal. I was completely finished before the guy across from me got his plate. We had ordered tea beforehand and it came out after the meal. One of the guys waiting on us (I suppose the owner) was very nice. The other guy seemed to stand around a lot and not know what to do when the place was busy. Again, the food here is good. They could be one of the better places in town if they did a little better managing the service.

LOVE Petra. Delicious hummus, delicious chicken shawarma. And right across from the main gate of USM. And lovely staff!

We've eaten at Petra 5 or 6 times now, and each time it has been perfect. I can't say anything bad about it except the location is rather small, but in Hattiesburg - a new restaurant is a real gamble. The owner (Ayman) is wonderfully helpful, and the wait staff is well trained and knowledgeable. The food is consistently great, particularly the lamb and haloomi cheese appetizer (try it - omg.) Go there!

Ate here a week or so ago, and the quality of the food continues to be high, even is somewhat slow. I am, however, willing to sit and relax in their intimate and cozy space because the food is sooooooo good! I do agree that the hummus doesn't have enough bean flavor for me but it's still very good. Try the lamb shanks if they're serving them because they are among the best I've ever had ANYWHERE!

This place is without a doubt the worst restaurant in Hattiesburg! BEWARE this place WILL RIP YOU OFF and the worst ever customer service you will ever experience. The food is terrible and the hookah is even worse! My friends and I went here recently and was told that the hookah would be $10.99. It took us literally 45 mins to get our hookah and once we got it, it wasn't working! There was a air leak somewhere and I tried fixing it but with no luck. So I explained to the waitress that it wasn't working and she proceeded to take the hookah back and said she was going to "give us another one". In the time she took to get us the hookah back, I noticed 3 new customers that came in were given newer looking hookah pipes! It took the waitress another 20 mins to get us "another one" but yet it was the same old busted hookah but was just re-packed!! At this point I was very upset and spoke with the manager about the situation because it had already been close to an hour since we had sat down while the other customers that came in 45 mins later than us were being served first. All he said to me was to "be patient". I explained to him that there is a limit of being patient and 1 hour of just sitting there was all the patience I had. So he took the same busted hookah back and we had to wait another 20 mins for him to pack and prepare another hookah! He finally came back with a hookah which we could at least take a pull from but tasted like plastic! Which then I demanded he give me some sort of discount for my less than unsatisfactory experience. He proceed to call the owner, Aman, about it and the owner spoke with one of my friends on the phone about the situation. Aman, the owner, REFUSED to give us any discount for our lousy experience!! I then checked the receipt to see what all he charged us for and to my surprise he had charged us $7.99 x 3 per hose for the hookah!! HE TRIED RIPPING US OFF!! When I asked him in the beginning he said it would cost $10.99 per hookah but then he charged us $25.00 for the hookah at the checkout!! BAIT AND SWITCH! What a rip off!!!!! First, they gave us a very very terrible experience and to put the icing on the cake, they tried ripping us off!! If you just want to smoke hookah, you're better off just buying a hookah and doing it yourself or going somewhere else. Bad ownership along with incompetent management sums up this establishment. I would never in a million years recommend this place to my family, friends, or anyone else!! STAY AWAY!!
