Mexican food similar to TexMex in Texas. Great service and the price is good. It is located in an old Pizza Hut across the street from music store on Hardy Street going downtown..

For the food, this place is top 5 in Hattiesburg. My wife and I go at least once a week. Anything from tacos to enchiladas are exceptional. Try the tacos al pastor or barbacoa. Try the chicken enchiladas. Try their steak fajitas. Ask for the spice red chili sauce (delicious but boy is it spicy). Chips are better than any place in Hattiesburg. This is a real family place, not going to find any margaritas here, but you will get some of the best mexican food in Mississippi that I have been able to find.

Good news: food is above average and better than many Mexican restaurants around these parts. Prices are very reasonable. Bad news: bathroom needs some work...dirty as hell. If you are in town, you should definitely check this place out. If they clean up the bathroom, I would give Compadres 4 stars.

Traveling through on a road trip, we thought we would give it a try. Pulled up to a full parking lot. Good sign. Walked past a mop sink on the outside of the restaurant that was filthy. Bad sign. Walked in the front door and we were overwhelmed by the smell of dirty bathrooms. Yikes. Turned right around and left.

We come to Compadres at least once a week. The arroz con pollo is very delicious. My husband had the carnitas, and they were awful. I could easily make better at home, and I'm not Mexican.

In the birthplace of rock and roll, Mississippi that is, that gave us Elvis and still has at least to my knowledge a Piggly Wiggly's resides a place that exists as an anomaly. I say this, ONE, since I am from San Antonio and there seems to be a Mexican restaurant as readily as there are eager mouths to eat at one. And TWO, in the heart of Dixieland there are not many restaurants to choose from of this style of cuisine. So when my friend told me about this place called Compadres, my curiosity piqued. It was once a Pizza Hut, to my understanding, somehow converted into an eatery and I don't mind that at all. Heck, in San Antonio I've seen dilapidated Church's Fried Chicken's, insurance buildings no less turned into palaces for taco, burrito and fajita mass consumption. I'm sure it must represent some culture shock to the residents here but por favor(please), have patience. Inside there is nothing new or really anything extraordinary to fuss about. Nothing that I haven't already seen that I can get back home. There is ample room for all. There is a little area where you can buy Pan De Dulce.(sweet~bread) Waitresses come to take your order, with big hoop earrings, a chola where I am from. She gave us menus and I surveyed it, looking for the obligatory dish for me, carne guisada. But there was none. And I realized that most of the plates were made con pollo.( with chicken) Well what is a Texas dude supposed to do? I decided to order Enchiladas Verdes.(skip the English translation) The food came out hot and quick, just the way I like it. I was ready to pick up my fork and dig in when I noticed that well, these aren't like the enchiladas I get back in Texas. I was a bit perplexed. The tortilla wasn't dipped in oil nor was there cheese oozing all over like a volcano. And I made the realization that there truly is no definitive Mexican Cuisine. It is more complex than chips and salsa more vast than the Border Sauce you get at Taco Bell. It certainly differs from region to region, city to city. Oh yeah back to the food, it was okay. But then. I noticed my friends, who are all from Mississippi, begin to smile with every bite. It made me think that food isn't always about taste but how does it make us feel? We attach memories and good times to plates and share them with all our friends. Sometimes as cultures with different languages and history we use food to communicate to each other. So in a sense it is a good place to start. Seeing two college students watching Vicente Fernandez on an overhead TV while eating was not lost on me. To the residents in Hattiesburg I say go to this place. It's a unique experience, certainly one I won't soon forget. p.s. My friends who live here wrote a song called, "Compadres." Mi encanto! (English translation, "it's all good!)

I'm in love with this unassuming restaurant! The dishes I've had thus far have been so delicious and fresh, I melt into every bite. I think the very casual ambiance gives it charm - and frankly, a Friday night date here and speaking Spanlish, makes me happy and full! I usually get chicken tacos with fresh fresh corn tortillas, cilantro and onions, guacamole...plus a variety of other dishes to share. I'm partial to this food simply because it's fresh, and healthy. I highly recommend it if you're in the mood for authentic, smaller portion Mexican food. Great place for lunch too!

Great traditional tacos, fajitas, carne asada, and salsa. Service can be very slow at times, but always friendly. I especially recommend the pork tacos and fish tacos.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
